Oscar hair: How will the leading ladies wear their locks?

$
0
0
We asked Debi Dumas, Hollywood's master of hair color, how she would do these leading ladies' hair for the Oscars. Here’s what she said!
Naomi Watts

The blondes

Naomi Watts

Naomi is a great example of this season’s buttery blonde — her one process color totally screams 2013! She will look spectacular in a bright red or shimmery golden dress, and a loose, wavy chignon. Her blonde is golden and sunny and she will keep her look classic and simple to make her both memorable and stylish.

Amanda Seyfried

This Les Mis star will shine, even without a personal nomination. She's this year's perfect "ombre" girl. She really got it right, as her golden blonde starts deeper at the crown and gradually gets more platinum toward the tips. Amanda will look spectacular with her hair deeply parted, and some wide Veronica Lake-ish sort of waves stacked off to one side. Sexy, but sophisticated.

Helen Hunt

Helen shines as our "natural sun streaked blonde." Her hair has that beachy champagne hue, and hand-painted highlights make her color pop. All my clients request this look during summer. I think she will hit the carpet in a rich deep blue or a sparkly silver gown and a more defined, but soft, updo.

Anne Hathaway

The browns

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is rockin' the short do in style. While the majority of the actresses are going long, Anne has chosen that classic, shagged pixie in a rich chocolate brown. I would throw in a few caramel brown pieces to give her hair a bit more texture, but nonetheless, she will be a showstopper. I predict a strapless fitted gown, in black or emerald green to accentuate her flawless skin, and some soft finger waves in the hair, a la pinup girl.

Jennifer Garner

This year's awards are all about her husband, but Jennifer won't let him down on his big night. Her brunette locks will be Oscar worthy with warm chestnut and honey face-framing highlights.

I think Jennifer should wear her hair down with sexy, light waves that complement her without making an overly bold statement. Smoky natural makeup with chunky earrings. Hot, with a twist of class.

Jennifer Lawrence

My Oscar winner, both on the carpet and the podium. I'm in love with everything about this girl. Jennifer's hair is a perfect combination of golden brown, with a splattering of multidimensional highlights. She really emulates how beautiful brunette can be when it's spiced up with some thin textured golden pieces. I predict she will come to the carpet elegant but coiffed. I see her as the frontrunner of glam — think Audrey Hepburn meets Princess Kate.

Jessica Chastain

The redheads

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain has the chance to SHINE as our brightest coppery redhead this year. While she's gone soft and simple for the past awards, I think the Academy is where she's going to "bring it."

I would add in a few deeper vibrant red and strawberry pieces to make her hair color pop. I see her in a flowy nude gown with her hair whisked off to one side by a sparkly hair clip.

Adele

Adele holds a style all her own, and I'm sure she's claiming a golden statue for her performance in Skyfall. I love this reddish hue SO much more than her previous blonde. The golden bits help to break up her thick mane of hair, giving it some texture and contrast. I see Adele with a Brigitte Bardot updo and a heavily brocaded crimson dress. Think British royalty meets French sex kitten.

Amy Adams

Amy is our spectacular "strawberry" red. 2013 is all about warming up hair color, and Amy leads the pack. Her locks perfectly match her warm freckled skin, and this lighter red choice gives her an A+ on the red carpet. I think she should wow the crowd with an intricate wavy chignon and a fitted, vibrantly colored dress.

Helen Miren

The pinks

Helen Mirren

This is the wild card… will Helen show up with the same pink locks as she did at BAFTA?? I'm saying no. While it was fun and youthful, I think Helen will grace the Academy with her always sophisticated and stunning silver locks. Hitchcock was all about the element of surprise, but I'm not sure that pink hair on his lead actress would be what he had in mind. I would put Dame Helen back to her beautiful blondish color by the time the red carpet rolls out in Hollywood.

The nominated roles for 2013 Oscars had the actresses who play them standing in war zones, homeless, nearly drowned and fighting desperately for their lives. Their looks are raw and real.

Get Jessica Chastain's
Zero Dark Thirty look

While acting out their roles, the 2013 Oscar-nominated actresses found themselves in war zones, homeless, nearly drowned and fighting desperately for their lives. Their looks are raw and real.

And lately, we aren't seeing flawless skin, delicately placed blush or long, lush eyelashes. Yet, we still can't take our eyes off of them! These are characters passionately fighting for what they believe in and doing whatever it takes to save those they love. And that is beautiful!

This year's beauty trends from the most popular films are about paring down makeup and allowing your mood, your spirit and your natural features to come through — believable, realistic and authentic beauty. And it's all there, just as Mother Nature designed you.

Go without makeup for a week or two until you find your features attractive. It is hard at first, because you may judge what you see in the mirror as washed out, drab and flat. After a day or so, that viewpoint will change. I find that this practice helps retain a realistic point of view as to what attractiveness really is. After you've let your skin breathe, try the fresh look inspired by Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty.

Enhance your raw beauty

  1. Beauty products to get Jessica Chastain's look

    Forgo foundation, concealer and powder.
  2. Use a gentle cleanser. Your skin will relax and start to take on a natural, healthy glow. I am a fan of Gentle Daily Cleanser by USANA Sense or Honey Girl Organics Facial Cleanser.
  3. A healing and protective moisturizer is a must. Try my Boomsilk by Cindy Joseph, Face and Eye Cream by Honey Girl Organics or Daily Moisturizer by USANA.
  4. Use a bronzer toned blush to add believable color to cheeks and eyelids. The brownish tone of a bronzer will keep your color from looking made up. Sun Bunny by Too Faced, Bronzer by Armani and Boomstick Color by Cindy Joseph are all great options!
  5. Use no-fiber mascara in brown tones to keep the no makeup look. Try Benefit BADgal Brown, Maybelline Great Lash or Covergirl Exact Eyelights.
  6. Lips can be stained with a brownish berry tone and should be well blotted so the color stains rather than coats your lips.

As you make your beauty regimen decisions this year, look to the movies for inspiration to go raw and real to discover your own authentic beauty.

4 Steps to a radiant red carpet glow

When you see the actresses nominated for the 2013 Academy Awards walking the red carpet this year, most likely you will make note of the makeup, hairstyles, accessories and gowns that dazzle the onlookers. But what about that red carpet glow?
Woman with glowing skin

Magic makeup tips

When you see the actresses nominated for the 2013 Academy Awards walking the red carpet this year, most likely you will make note of the makeup, hairstyles, accessories and gowns that dazzle the onlookers. But what about that red carpet glow?

That radiant glow most likely comes from healthy skin and happiness. Healthy skin starts with a healthy lifestyle, good diet, exercise, fresh air, sleep and sunshine. And happiness comes from taking joy in one's life.

...But that's not to say you can't get a similar look with some magic makeup.

1

Foundation

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Wear a thin veil of foundation over very well moisturized skin. After applying the foundation, wait for it to dry and apply the tiniest bit of moisturizer with a blotting motion over your foundation to create a dewy "real skin" look.

Try:Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and Boomsilk moisturizer by Cindy Joseph.

Note: Do not use powder — it dulls the skin, creating dryness and texture. Skin is a live breathing organ. The more alive it looks, the more radiant you look.
2

Highlighter

Boomstick Glimmer by Cindy Joseph

Use a cream based pearlescent highlighter to add extra luster and radiance to your skin. Place that on your eyelids, upper cheek bones, brow bone, clavicle bones, shoulders and decollete. Make sure it's not frosted but pearlescent.

Try:Ramy Juicy CheeksBoomstick Glimmer by Cindy Joseph or High Beam by Benefit.

Quick tip: Don't have a pearl highlighter? Any pearly lipstick that blends with your skin tone can be used.
3

Blush

Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush

Add only a delicate touch of believable blush color... meaning it blends with your skin tone. Place it where you naturally blush when you're embarrassed — on your upper forehead, sides of your neck, the center of your chest and corner of brow bones.

Try:Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush.

4

Mascara

mascara

For that natural radiance, no makeup look, you should not detect any eye makeup. Use one coat of non-fiber mascara and do not use black unless your eyelashes are naturally black. One coat only!

Jessica Chastain wants to make one thing clear, Hollywood: She's here to stay!

Jessica Chastain at the 2013 Academy Awards

The actress definitely made that statement with the rose colored Georgio Armani Privé gown she wore to the 2013 Academy Awards.

Chastain — also adorned with Harry Winston jewels — told E!'s Ryan Seacrest that she picked the dress as a homage to Old Hollywood.

"It's a very 'Happy birthday Mr. President' kind of dress," she joked.

She deserves this gown.

Chastain — nominated for her second Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty— experienced her fair share of rejection in her career. She was so used to rejection that she told The Hollywood Reporter that she felt she was "cursed."

"That was something we joked about: The Chastain Curse," she told the magazine last fall. "I had worked for so long. I even played a dead body on TV. I did so many things. I finally got my big break."

You have definitely arrived, Jessica.

O-M-G! Amy Adams looked absolutely breathtaking in her fairy tale Oscar de la Renta ball gown on the red carpet this evening. A very appropriate designer choice for one of the biggest award shows of the year, right?
Amy Adams at the 2013 Oscars

Editor's choice

Amy's 2013 Oscars gown is one of our top picks of the night!

If we could have dreamed up the perfect Oscars gown for Amy Adams, it would have paled in comparison to the one the actress actually ended up wearing tonight. Her strapless, light blue Oscar de la Renta gown featured delicate beading at the bodice, a gorgeous tiered ruffle skirt and a long, stunning train. We couldn't take our eyes off of it!

Apparently Amy chose the princess-y dress only two weeks ago, as she confessed to Ryan Seacrest that they had to rush to get it finished in time. She styled it with Moet jewels, as well as an elegant updo and a neutral lip.

Django Unchained star Kerry Washington shines in Miu Miu at the 2013 Academy Awards!

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu at the 2013 OscarsKerry Washington turned heads on the 2013 Academy Awards red carpet in her bright-and-embellished Miu Miu gown. However, the Django Unchained star claims she doesn't know much about fashion.

"I think I’m really lucky. I’ve been able to learn about fashion from people in the industry, and they have all been really supportive," she told Philadelphia Style magazine last year.

"I work with a few different stylists for my look. I’m not a very fashionable dresser in everyday life. I view being on the red carpet and photo shoots as playing a character."

Well, you're playing that character really well, Kerry!

The actress paired her Miu Miu creation with Christian Louboutin heels, a Prada bag, a Fred Leighton ring and Chopard earrings.

And yes, you can bet she's totally loving her time on the Oscars red carpet.

"The red carpet thing is part of the job, like it’s the actor’s responsibility as part of post-production," she told Philadelphia Style. "I had no idea I would love it so much."

Zoe Saldana: Fabulous in Alexis Mabille Couture

Zoe Saldana goes asymmetrical in her black, gray and white Alexis Mabille Couture gown at the 2013 Academy Awards.

Zoe Saldana at the Oscars

We're totally digging the ruffled Alexis Mabille Couture gown actress Zoe Saldana wore on the 2013 Academy Awards red carpet. The Words star paired the gorgeous black, white and gray gown with Roger Vivier shoes, Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and, of course, Neil Lane jewels.

Saldana picked a lesser-known name to create her Oscars look, but she told People that she loves a variety of designers – the name doesn't matter, just the style.

"So if I see an outfit from a designer that I really feel will complement my personality and I know that I would wear it well, I will definitely fight for it," she said in 2011.

Her family might have something to do with that. The actress grew up in a family of talented seamstresses, so she was always around fashion.

"My grandmother and great-grandmother were seamstresses their whole lives, so when my grandmother moved to New York in the ’60s, she worked for design houses throughout the city," Saldana told Gotham magazine last year. "She really loved fabrics and textiles, so it was natural to my family. Fashion wasn’t like a religion to us, but it is in my ancestry. It was never about luxury; it was about art."

And that dress is certainly a work of art, Zoe.

Jennifer Lawrence goes bridal in the best way possible at the Oscars

No, Jennifer Lawrence isn’t getting hitched anytime soon, but we can certainly see why she said “I do” to this exquisite, pale pink Dior Haute Couture gown. It couldn’t be more fitting for the Oscars.
Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Academy Awards

Jennifer Lawrence had us hooked from the moment she floated across our television screens at the 2013 Academy Awards. The best actress nominee chose a beautiful, bridal-inspired, pale pink Dior gown for the Oscars. Her larger than life strapless dress featured a fabulously flared skirt, short train and an elegant floral design.

Can we talk about her stunning, backwards Chopard necklace for a second? It was such a simple touch but it pulled together her entire outfit gorgeously. We love that she's brining back the old trend.

It didn't sound like Jennifer had the easiest time prior to hitting the red carpet this evening. As she told Ryan Seacrest, “Today was stressful. I had no time to eat. I’m starving!”

Her whole family was getting ready at her house, too. "It was the craziest. I felt like Steve Martin in The Father of the Bride, watching all the furniture in my house be moved around.”

Yikes! The good news is, Jennifer, you look absolutely mesmerizing.

Naomi Watts dazzles in a futuristic Oscars gown

Australian actress Naomi Watts is always impeccably dressed, but the blonde bombshell really blew us away in Armani Prive at this year’s Academy Awards.

Naomi Watts at the 2013 OscarsNaomi Watts definitely made mouths drop when she showed up in this metallic silver Armani creation at the 2013 Oscars. And hey, for good reason! The gown was drop-dead gorgeous, out-of-this-world stunning. It not only fit her figure flawlessly, but the cutout asymmetrical neckline really amped up the wow-factor.

Naomi's boyfriend Liev Schreiber also seemed plenty pleased with her pick. “I’m not sure my input had anything to do with her choice,” he told Ryan Seacrest. Naomi begged to differ however, saying she always listens to him and that “he’s really honest.”

Well, Liev, it must be pretty easy to be so honest when your girlfriend is as beautiful as Naomi Watts is, right?

Naomi finished off her look with Jimmy Choo shoes, a Roger Vivier bag and Neil Lane Jewels. She kept her makeup fairly simple and opted for a textured updo.

Anne Hathaway's last minute Oscars dress switch

Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway was all set to wear Valentino to the 2013 Academy Awards, but she showed up in Prada! Was it a good choice?

Anne Hathaway in Prada at the Oscars

Anne Hathaway decided to go with the "business in the front, party in the back" Prada dress for the 2013 Academy Awards.

And the reviews are mixed.

The pale pink gown showed off Hathaway's incredible body, but the cut was strange at the neckline. Oh, and it also showcased Hathaway's "little Annes," if you catch our drift.

"I didn't know what I was wearing until about three hours a go," the actress said on the red carpet. "This was the one that spoke to me in the end."

Valentino is surely disappointed with the snub, especially since he designed her wedding dress and thinks of her as his "daughter."

We're sure he'll get over it.

The 30-year-old newlywed is having the best year of her life, thanks to her life-changing role in Les Miserables and her wedding to husband Adam Shulman.

"I found my soul mate and we committed ourselves to each other and that's just the best thing ever, and everything else since then, the success of the film and my personal success...this has just been the cherry on top of a wonderful, wonderful dish of vegan ice cream," she told E! News.

Jennifer Lawrence's stunning Dior Haute Couture gown and Oscar win wowed us all last night! Another thing that caught our attention? That gorgeous updo!

We turned to her mane man, Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend, for tips on recreating the look at home.

"Jennifer Lawrence is a dream to work with — she is so unbelievably fun and inspiring," Townsend says.

Steal the look

  1. Start by applying a few drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum to damp hair and comb through. The natural almond and coconut oils in the serum will give locks extra moisture and shine.
  2. Next, add a large dollop of Dove Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse to hair and blow dry with a large round brush.
  3. Add a nickel size amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in your hands and rake through the hair to create texture and shine.
  4. Taking random pieces from each side, loosely twist and pin together at the back of the head with eight bobby pins in crosses.
  5. Finally, take the remaining hair and gather it into a loose, playful bun. Finish with Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray.

The Oscars are on the most glamorous night of the year; where trends are set, hairstyles are copied, and looks become a part of fashion history. This year’s Oscar red carpet did not disappoint, with an overwhelming essence of light, nude and pale tones and whites that wowed!
Anya Sarre

Who wore what to
the Oscars?

The Oscars are on the most glamorous night of the year — where trends are set, hairstyles are copied and looks become a part of fashion history. This year’s Oscar red carpet did not disappoint, with an overwhelming essence of light, nude and pale tones and whites that wowed!

Trend: Nude, pale, blush

Jessica Chastain at the 2013 Oscars

It all started with Jessica Chastain who was the first of the nominees to arrive in a nude, sparkly Armani privé gown that complemented her skin. She set the neutral color trend for the night and was followed by Octavia Spencer, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Amy Adams.

What this means for you: Get used to these colors, as they are here to stay. We’re going to be seeing neutral colors through spring and summer, so be sure to integrate them into your wardrobe, whether it's in the form of a top, accessory or cocktail dress for your next event.

Trend: White wow

Charlize Theron at the 2013 Oscards

Stars like Charlize Theron, Queen Latifah, Zoe Saldana and Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence all wowed in white and did a great job of keeping their dresses red carpet glam and not too bridal. Sometimes the fear with wearing white is that it will give off a bridal look, but all of these stars managed to look like they were walking down the red carpet and not down the aisle.

What this means for you:Transition your winter white into spring white because this look is here to stay. Don’t be afraid to pair white pants with a white top for a chic look — just be sure to finish it off with a metallic pair of shoes to accent your outfit.

Trend: Metallic is a must

Sandra Bullock at the 2013 Oscars

Metallic was the new black at the Oscars last night. Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sandra Bullock, Stacy Keibler and Renee Zellweger dazzled in metallic shades of gunmetal, gold and silver. Metallics are always a way to stay neutral while exuding the perfect amount of pizzazz.

What this means for you: Every girl should have metallic in her wardrobe ready to go. Next time you’re thinking about wearing basic black, try metallic instead.

Shine on

Once upon a time, we'd never dream of mixing metallics — in home decor, jewelry, accessories — it was a major fashion faux pas. Rules are made to be broken, and when it comes to the runway, the edgier the better. Click here to read more!

Trend: Pop of color

Jane Fond at the 2013 Oscars

Color was few and far between on the carpet, but when it showed up, it was bright and made a statement. The colors varied from shades of blue to yellow, red and purple. Jane Fonda gets the award for flaunting the brightest color in her yellow Versace Couture gown and Jennifer Garner’s purple Gucci number was the color to beat. Jennifer Aniston and Sally Fields both chose red Valentino gowns.

Aniston’s full skirt silhouette was pretty yet predictable. Kerry Washington stood out in a coral Miu Miu gown, which perfectly complemented her skin tone. A standout moment on the carpet was when Helen Hunt revealed her Navy gown was from H&M, something everyone can relate to. Although color was scarcely seen on the carpet, the stars who did wear it wore it boldly.

What this means for you: Even if you have a neutral wardrobe, try incorporating a pop of color to offset your neutral look.

Amazing accessory

The accessories at this year’s Oscars were generally minimal. Not many over-the-top pieces were seen, as stars kept it simple and polished. Most everyone had a strapless gown this year, which is the perfect backdrop for a stunning necklace. Look out for the backwards necklace trend to pop up in a few weeks, a la Jennifer Lawrence and her backwards Chopard number.

What this means for you: Get ahead of the trend and start wearing your own backward necklace now! Take a long necklace and let it hang down your back to achieve this statement look.

An eventful awards season has officially come to an end. So keep the good trends, forget about the bad ones, and stay stylish until the next show!

Burt's Bees new Spring 2013 Natural Lip Glosses and Lip Shines
product review

Pearlescent shine that works

Burt's Bees has always put on a great show when it comes to natural products. Now the spotlight this season is on the new lip offerings. From lip gloss to natural lip shines, check out what we think about the new launches.

I've always been a huge fan of Burt's Bees. When I was pregnant, their Mama Bee line came to my rescue, and I felt so good about slathering essential oils and applying tinted lip balms until I was blue in the face. Their products are always so lip-smacking good that I was eager to test their new spring lip launches.

Lip Glosses

The brand partnered with celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno, a green junkie who uses only the greenest of beauty products to suit her lifestyle. She loved the new color payoff and formula.

New this spring are their natural lip glosses which have a pearlescent finish. Infused with botanical oils as well as beeswax, the lip glosses boast ingredients that are really safe enough to cook with, including jojoba esters and sunflower polyglycerides. The glosses also have a pleasing fragrance to them, a universally palatable light vanilla scent. They come in 12 shades including the Neutrals: Autumn Haze, Fall Foliage, Sweet Sunset, Sunny Day; Pinks: Ocean Sunrise, Rosy Dawn, Spring Splendor, Summer Twilight; Reds: Evening Glow, Ruby Moon, Nearly Dusk and Starry Night.

The glosses are highly emollient, thanks to the botanical oils, so you'll feel great about slathering them on day after day. Plus, the colors are not too pigmented , and so they'll pair very nicely with your spring wardrobe which is all about pastel shades and lighter colors.

The key ingredient in the gloss is sunflower oil, which readily absorbs into skin and won't leave it oily. It's also great for nourishing the lips with essential fatty acids. These moisturize like nothing we've seen — plus give your lips a pearlescent finish. For the price, this is tremendous value.

Lip Shines

The completely natural formula of the lip shines ensures that these are perfect for the woman committed to a green lifestyle. The result of using these lip shines is sheer, glassy color and hydration.

I was surprised at not only the color payoff but the hydration of the glosses. Typically, glosses do leave lips feeling sticky , but these don't ever do that. The hydration lasted two hours before I had to reapply. You're not going to get a long-lasting color , but if you do reapply, you're good to go for at least one to two hours.

The colors are subtle and range from Whisper, Blush and Wink, to darker shades like Flutter, Pucker and Smooch. The tubes are long, sleek and are made from recycled plastic.

Both of these new products hit shelves in March 2013.

Playdates can be fun, but they can also be a little messy with all those kids around, you know... playing! So, while you definitely want to dress comfortably, there are some key playdate pieces that are must-haves for your closet. Time to pull off comfy chic.

Most moms prefer to be comfortable in sweats and comfy tees, especially when spending the day around crazy active kids.

But, there are most definitely ways to feel comfortable yet look stylish at the same time all the while leaving the sweats in the closet where they belong. Try pairing some long gaucho pants with a cute comfy top, and finish it off with a fun pair of simple flats.

Summer's outfit

It's always been my dream to wear pants with elastic every day of my life. BUT, I just love fashion way too much to take that to any extreme. Instead, I've found that the long gaucho pants are the cutest alternative. That said, when it comes to getting the kids together with their friends, I know it'll be really busy and we'll be getting up and down, so I want to be comfortable. By choosing this outfit, I still feel like I'm in my sweats, but look like I put some effort into my look. Anyway, it's all about "looking" like you have it all together, right?

With close to a billion eyes glued to the screen, there is no greater fashion parade than the red carpet at the Oscars. At Sunday night’s 85th annual Academy Awards, a seemingly endless stream of stunning stars paraded, pouted, posed and plodded their way up the 300-foot red carpet. The stars were all clad in towering heels and gowns tailored within an inch of their lives — all while trying to mask their discomfort, nerves and utter joy under a veneer of graceful elegance and congenial reserve.

Every gown an actress wears during the award season is simply a prelude, a warm up act for this — the main event.

What she chooses to wear on the most important night of her professional career speaks volumes about not only her inner fantasies , but has enormous ramifications on how she will be perceived by the world. The right gown can open professional doors to everyone from directors to casting agents and event lucrative endorsement contracts, while the wrong dress can slam those same doors in their pretty little faces.

So let’s have a look at some of Oscar's most striking outfits to uncover what they really reveal about the wearer.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Oscars

This was always going to be Jennifer’s night and she dressed the part: nothing understated or “supporting role” about this Best Actress winner's look. The Dior Haute Couture dessert-like tiered ball gown confection took up physical space, perfectly symbolizing her position as the main act.

The delicate floral brocade fabric in virginal white with touches of pale pink has a classic, pretty allure. It perfectly juxtaposes the smoldering smoky eye makeup. This is classic JLaw — at once fresh-faced and light but with a deep, darker sexuality and complexity that she brings to all of her roles.

The single strand of Chopard diamonds worn down her back as a necklace added a youthful, rebellious I-do-things-a-little-differently vibe to the look, conveying her desire to move away from convention and her resistance to conform.

Charlize Theron

Showcasing her new pixie cut and clad in an icy white strapless gown, Charlize’s look was very fresh and said “This is who I am, I have nothing to hide.”

The flawless white pillar Dior gown featured a spiked, almost modernist neckline that was the very embodiment of contemporary dressing. She is her own woman, empowered, proud and fearless — her dress expressed her position. There is nothing this girl can’t do and she feels she doesn’t need a man to feel secure or complete.

Naomi Watts

The impossibly talented Aussie was one of the night’s best and most daring dressers in her sparkling pewter Armani gown, showcasing the night's most unique necklines — half sweetheart/half solid boat neck.

This distinctive neckline is at once hyper feminine and has a deep strength and fortitude to it, a sign of someone who knows themselves and isn’t trying to conform to anyone else’s ideals about what they should be. She is as comfortable with being lighthearted, silly and girl-next-door as she is expressing her more serious, deeply passionate inner self. Having walked the carpet many times before, this daring look speaks to her comfort level with being in the spotlight and her ability to “play the game” but also switch off and go home to a normal life. She isn’t trying to be the princess in tulle. She’s moved past that and is taking risks with her dressing and her acting.

Anne Hathaway

The Best Supporting Actress winner selected this unique Prada gown just three hours before she stepped onto the red carpet. The multitalented star admitted that her mother said the look was “all business at the front, party at the back,” yet this is not exactly what this dress conveys. Instead, it shows her desire to stand out from the crowd and push the limits creatively. She sees herself as an artist, not as a celebrity and this very artistic creation speaks to that need to express herself. Having recently gotten married, she has hidden her sexuality and cleavage, reserving it for her back and a flash of “side boob” as if to say “I will only give you a tiny glimpse of my sensuality… but it’s there.”

The short hair swept to the side is classic and brings the focus to her eyes which express her soul. She doesn’t want to distract you from her inner beauty.

Britney Spears: Brunette bombshell!

We're totally digging Britney Spears' new brown strands. But, wait: It took how long to go from blond to brunette?

Britney Spears

The single life certainly agrees with Britney Spears!

The "Scream and Shout" singer walked the red carpet at Elton John's AIDS Foundation Oscar-viewing party on Sunday night with a dramatically different look. Most notably, she's sporting much darker hair.

Spears, 31, paired her new brown strands with a gorgeous Michael Cinco Couture dress and Saint Laurent shoes. It wasn't a last-minute decision, either: Her colorist, Brittany Hunter, told E! News that they've been planning the switch for about a month.

"We wanted to make sure she was going to be committed to it before we made the change, as it can be a difficult process going from light blonde to brunette," the Mark Slicker Salon stylist said. "We started the process on Thursday and then finished it up on Sunday. We wanted to make sure the color was going to stick and it wasn't going to fade."

Why brown? Spears wanted a more mature look closer to her natural hair color.

"I wanted to keep her as close to her natural color as possible, so not too dark," Hunter added. "In the end we went with a very natural and rich light brown. We wanted the right tone that would complement her skin color."

The hair pro — who has worked with Spears since 2011 — said the singer is happy with it and will keep the hue for the foreseeable future.

"I do think she will stick with it. She seems very happy."

Kerry Washington let her Miu Miu dress — not her makeup — get the attention at the 2013 Academy Awards. Her makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez, gave us the inside scoop on which products she used to give the Django Unchained star such a fresh-faced look.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington's makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez, said she gained inspiration for the Django Unchained star's beauty from the embellishments on her stunning Miu Miu dress.

Face

  • Giorgio Armani Maestro #10
  • Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer #11
  • Lancôme Blush Subtil in Brilliant Berry

Eyes

  • Lancôme Color Design 5-Pan Shadow & Liner Palette in Sienna Sultry
  • Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara

Lips

  • Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro 202
  • Lancôme Rouge in Love in Rose Boudoir

So, she wasn't wearing a ton of product on the red carpet, but her skin looked absolutely flawless. How does she keep it that way? It's pretty simple.

"I mean like drinking water," she told StyleBistro in 2012. "I just think there are few things that are as important to beauty as being hydrated."

Fish oil supplements help, too.

"That's really helped in terms of my skin. I had eczema as a kid and sometimes if I get really stressed out or if I'm not watching what I'm eating it can flare up," she said. "The fish oil helps me to have enough healthy fatty acids."

All we need is fish oil and water to look as fab as Washington? Sign us up!

Why Anne Hathaway wore Prada to the Oscars

Anne Hathaway pulled the ole "last-minute switcharoo" at the Oscars. Now, we finally know why she ditched Valentino for Prada.

Anne Hathaway

It's all Amanda Seyfried's fault!

Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear a custom Valentino creation to the 2013 Academy Awards — and Valentino even sent out a media alert with the scoop — but then Hathaway showed up in that pink Prada gown.

Everyone wanted to know: What in the world happened?

She wasn't snubbing Valentino — it just turned out that the dress was too similar to the Alexander McQueen gown Seyfried was wearing to the ceremony, according to sources.

It apparently all went down a few hours before the Oscars. According to US Weekly, Hathaway texted her Les Misérables co-star to see her dress.

"What are you wearing? Can you send me a picture of it?'" Hathaway texted Seyfried, according to the source.

And the dresses were just too similar, so she switched.

Hathaway didn't get into the designer drama on the red carpet though, telling Ryan Seacrest that the dress was one "that spoke to me."

"My dress is Prada, and I didn't know what I was wearing until about three hours ago," she added to the E! News host.

"Procrastination?" Seacrest inquired.

"No, I think I was just working too hard," she answered back.

Whitney Port on Oscars makeup: "Fresh and glowing" >>

And now she's apologizing for it.

"It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans," she told People Tuesday afternoon.

"Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself," she continued. "I deeply regret any disappointment caused."

No apology necessary, Anne! It's your choice, after all.
