Mom talking to tween daughter

Having the talk with your daughter is never easy. No no, I'm not talking about "that" talk, ladies. I'm talking about the shaving talk! When it's time for your little lady to start shaving, turn to these tips from Venus' resident dermatologist.

When to start,
what to do

SheKnows: When should you first start talking to your daughter about shaving?

Dr. Jody Levine: It’s such a wonderful topic to discuss together, as it usually occurs at the beginning of the teenage years, when you want to really establish a great relationship with your daughter moving into her formidable years. It also helps your daughter see you as the person to turn to for this kind of advice.

When exactly to begin the conversation really depends on your daughter. In my experience, there are two types of children. There are those that are very open and talk to you about everything that is on their minds. In that case, as soon as your daughter takes the initiative and mentions it, it’s a great time to start talking about shaving. Then there are those children who may be embarrassed and don’t really say what’s on their mind. In this case, look for hints that they want to talk about it, like mentioning that a friend started shaving or saying that they’re noticing the hair on their legs — then address the topic.

SK: Any tips for how to start the conversation and what to say?

JL: I like to start the conversation in a positive light by making shaving exciting and treating it like a milestone in their life. If you’re excited to show them and talk to them, it really helps get the process going off on the right foot. When my oldest daughter began to shave, I actually pulled out the video camera and made the biggest deal out of it !

I find it’s easiest to relate things personally to children, like “I remember the first time I started shaving,” and then either “it was so hard because I didn’t have someone to show me how to do it and I had to learn the hard way” or “I appreciated having someone to show me, so that I could do it safely.” I think it’s important to explain how easy shaving can be and how once you start doing it, it’ll naturally become part of your routine.

SK: There are so many shaving products out there! What's a great option to start off for teens and tweens?

JL: The razor that you use is very important. You want to choose a sharp razor, with multiple blades to keep shaving safe. The Venus Embrace has five blades, placed closely together, that way the skin can’t pucker up in between the blades, so you’re less likely to cut yourself. When the blades are sharper, you actually get a closer, more long-lasting shave and you’re less likely to irritate your skin because you don’t have to go over the same areas multiple times. The Venus Embrace also has an ergonomic handle that makes the razor easy to grip, especially in a wet environment.

I also recommend using shave gel like the Passionista Fruit Satin Care Shave Gel, to help lubricate the skin so the razor glides smoothly. Another great benefit to using shave gel is that it makes the hair stand up a bit, making it easier to shave them. It also smells great, so your daughter will love it! You can show your daughter how much shave gel to use, so that she covers the whole area. Then, the shave gel can act as a guide to help her see where she’s gone.

SK: What about waxing? Is it safe/appropriate for teens?

JL: I am not a big fan of waxing for your legs or underarms. For a girl at this age, you want them to feel independence and have confidence that they can take care of their body. It’s hard to do that with waxing because they need appointments and someone to take them there. The hair needs to grow out to be waxed and that in between time can make your daughter feel self-conscious. When you provide them with a good razor to use in the shower, it’s just so easy for them to be in complete control of their body. It’s something your daughter can easily do on her own, once you’ve shown her how.

SK: What are some simple techniques you can teach your daughter so she doesn't injure herself but so that she still gets a close, nice shave?

JL: The right way to shave really involves using the right tools. The Venus Embrace razor for new shavers has a “Perfect Shave Tips” guide, which has answers to those frequently asked questions, like how often to change blades, how to minimize nicks and cuts and how to prevent razor bumps. Once you have that, there are a few simple tips:Satin Care and Venus Embrace

  • The best shaving environment is in a warm shower, when the skin is moistened and the hairs are softened.
  • You want to shave smoothly in small strokes, without pressing very hard. If you feel like you need to press hard to get a good shave, then it’s time to replace blades.
  • You don’t need to cover a whole area from your ankle to your knee in one stroke.
  • Also, don’t go over the same area multiple times, as this can lead to irritation and razor bumps. Using your shave gel as a guide can be helpful to avoid going over one area multiple times.

SK: Any other tips and tricks?

JL: I recommend learning to shave your legs first and then moving on to other areas. The skin on your legs is nice and tight, which makes it easy to learn to shave on. Plus, you can see exactly what you are doing. When you’re shaving your underarms, it can be helpful to pull the skin taut to get a closer shave. You can also shave in two directions in the underarms — downward as well as upward. The hair here grows in different directions in your underarm, so this helps you get them all.

Learning how to shave is really a great opportunity to bond with your daughter, so you shouldn’t miss it! As a mother, I can tell you that as time goes on, there are few things that they are going to consider important and personal and yet feel comfortable enough to ask for your help with.

Heading on a first date? While you're figuring out where to go and what to wear, don't forget to give your hair some attention! Justine Piecuch, hairstylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, shares her first date hair dos and don'ts.

First dates couldn't be more nerve-wracking. If all we had to do was put together the final details, it would probably be a piece of cake. Instead we spend countless hours trying on 20 different outfits and talking in the mirror, trying to figure out how to describe ourselves.

In the process, we tend to forget one minor thing: what men think about our hair at first sight. I have always been one to question my single male clients about their dating lives and am always shocked to see how much they actually DO notice the small things. Being a hairstylist, they always tell me what they thought about a woman's hair. Taking their thoughts, here are some of the dos and don'ts of first date hair!

Do maintain your hair color

If you have gray roots, get them done. Visible roots can reveal a lot about a woman's age, and men will quickly notice. Besides, obvious roots just look sloppy and unkempt! If it's the cost of coloring that you're concerned about, work out a plan with your stylist. Single gals should always look somewhat put together when looking for a mate.

Do trim unruly ends

If it's been a while and you need to really work to smooth out those ends, go get them trimmed. One thing men do notice is whether or not hair looks good. Guys like things that look shiny, healthy and natural! Dead hair looks frizzy and dry, and nothing says you don't take care of yourself more than that.

Don't get over done

Before you go out, think about the place you're going and try to create an appropriate 'do just like you would an outfit. If you're doing something active, a simply pony is perfect. Getting overly done says you're way too high maintenance, and although some men love this, it's a major turn off for most.

Do put some effort in

Getting over done is a definite no, but not doing anything at all simply says you don't care. Men love it when we spend a little time looking good just for them. Date night is definitely the time to take your daily look and turn it up a notch.

Do keep it natural

Women often ask whether men prefer curls or straight hair. The easiest answer is that every man is different, but as a hairstylist, I often lean more toward the straighter side. Doing a simple at-home blowout is an easy way to polish up locks, but if you're hair challenged, go get one done.

Don't play with your hair!

For many women, nerves lead them to play with their hair. If you want to show your date you're interested in him, a flirty flip or toss over the shoulder is all you need! Anything more is straight up annoying.

6 Ways to have more confident body language>>

Do show your face

Men often say they love it when their girl has her hair pulled back, no makeup on and is wearing sweatpants. I swear if this were really true, it would save us all millions of hours in our busy lives. But there is something to be said for the toned down look. If you're feeling ultra-confident, pulling hair back can be perfect and leaves some element of surprise. A loose chignon is great for almost any date and outfit. Talk about being fast too!

Real Moms Speak: How pregnancy changes beauty

$

We all know that pregnant women get a gorgeous glow — not only from the happiness that pregnancy can bring but from hormones working overtime! However, sometimes the outlook is not so pretty. Nausea, fatigue, over-zealous hormones combined with having to avoid most skin care products with harsh chemicals or treatments force moms-to-be to alter their regular beauty regimens. I spoke with real moms and mom bloggers to find out what the biggest change in their beauty routine was during pregnancy.

Woman putting lotion on stomach

When I first became pregnant, I know that my biggest change was not being able to get wrinkle-freezing treatments on my forehead! I came up with a quick fix by asking my hairdresser to cut bangs. Thanks to pregnancy hormones, my hair was long and thick and bangs added a chic and fun change to my look! The advice from real moms ranged from treating pregnancy-related issues, like stretch marks and melasma, to adding simple ways to perk up their look while pregnant.

Here's what they shared:

Clarisonic Aria Sonic Skin Cleansing System
Mom favorite: Clarisonic system

Kerrie Thompson, mom of four boys

I was not able to use any retinol, glycolic or vitamin C products during my pregnancy. I made sure to exfoliate my skin and I bought the Clarisonic system. I also had a few microdermabrasion treatments to keep the texture of my skin in good shape.

Romy Schorr, mom of one and blogger at RomyRaves

I had to lay off my go-to, more aggressive anti-aging products like retinol and hydroquinone because they could possibly have damaging side effects during pregnancy.

Jennifer Brandt, mommy and blogger at Perfectly Disheveled

Lotion! I used more lotion than I ever had in my life on EVERY. PART. OF. MY. BODY. Other than that, I wore as much makeup as I do now and still did my hair… In fact, I wouldn't leave to go to the hospital until I had fully blow dried my hair when in labor.

"I wouldn't leave to go to the hospital until I had fully blow dried my hair when in labor."

Molly Skyar, mom of two and parenting blogger at ConversationswithMyMother.com

I had never had a facial before I was pregnant, but during my first pregnancy, I developed terrible acne. Gigantic undergrounders that would come out of nowhere and were mostly concentrated on my face. It was awful. About half-way through, my girlfriend suggested I get a facial to change the PH balance of my skin. I couldn't imagine that would help, but at that point, I was desperate! I got a facial and she was right — it cleared up the acne and I had a lot less of it to deal with for the rest of my pregnancy.

Shelby Barry, mom of two

Well, it was actually nothing that I even tried to do, but I think my hair and skin were the best ever when I was pregnant. I slept a lot earlier so I got more than enough sleep. I didn't drink caffeine or alcohol so my skin looked better than ever and just naturally your hair is longer and shiny because of the vitamins. I felt better than ever when I was pregnant .

Charli Eaton, mom of one

Using all-natural based products. No chemicals, no animal testing.

Other ways moms can feel beautiful while pregnant

Beauty for pregnant women should include products or treatments that do not involve harsh chemicals. Good options include microdermabrasion instead of a glycolic peel, blowouts for your hair, manicures and pedicures.

Pregnant beauty products

In terms of skin care, try a skin care line targeted toward pregnancy, such as Belli Cosmetics. If acne is a problem, try Belli’s Anti-Blemish Facial Wash, which contains lactic acid and lemon peel oil .

For those who color their hair, this can be a big challenge as well. Most doctors will advise you to wait until after the first trimester to color your hair and to stick with semi-permanent hair colors, such as highlights . Any treatments should also be done in a well-ventilated area, to reduce inhaling any chemicals or fumes.

For manicures and pedicures, try a nail polish brand like Zoya , which has more than 240 colors and doesn't contain toxins like formaldehyde and toluene. If you find your skin looking blotchy from hyperpigmentation, apply a corrective concealer to problem areas with a concealer brush. One to try is Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer .

Bye bye wrinkles

When your weekday mommy wardrobe mainly consists of jeans and a T-shirt, it's easy to forget that you might actually need to release wrinkles from your dressier clothing. And oh no! Just minutes before you head out the door, you realize your favorite dressy top is filled with frumpy wrinkles. Not to worry. Anyone can manage these handy wrinkle tricks on the fly.

Steam it up

You're about to take your daily shower when you realize your work pants are creased and crinkled. Skip the iron — clip them on a pants hanger and let the steam do the work!

Take your typical warm-to-hot shower, making sure to close the door behind you so steam builds in the bathroom. As soon as you get out, dry off and head over to your pants.

Section by section, hold the fabric taut until the wrinkles release. This might not work for deep wrinkles, but for tiny creases, it easily does the trick.

Wrinkle release spray

There are many types of wrinkle release spray on the market, such as Downy Wrinkle Releaser. Or you can simply make you own with one teaspoon of white fabric softener and one cup of water. Mix them in a water bottle with a fine mist setting. Keep a travel-size bottle in your purse or car for emergency situations. When a wrinkle problem presents itself, simply mist the article of clothing and hold the section taut, exactly as described in the steam method. When you don't have steam at your disposal, this might be your best bet!

The car window

On those extra hot, blaringly sunny summer days, you can use the weather to release your wrinkles, all while making the drive to your destination. When you're ready to head out the door, place your garment on a hanger on the hook above the door in the back of your car. Make sure the garment is facing directly toward the sun. Just as an iron would apply heat to release wrinkles, the sun will do the same. When you're ready to wear the garment, simply pull it taut to make sure all the wrinkles are released.

Dryer method

So maybe that shirt has been on your floor a little longer than you're willing to admit. When it's ready for a wear, simply pop it in the dryer on high heat for five minutes.

The heat will release the wrinkles. Plus, the spinning drum will make sure the shirt doesn't develop any new wrinkles in the process.

Once five minutes are up, immediately pull out the garment and wear it.

The Beachwaver

The Beachwaver

This is by far my favorite go-to hairstyle for my everyday look. It takes just minutes to do, and it really does stay for days! With a little dry shampoo, I'm able to make this look last up to three days, which is perfect for a busy mom who still wants to look cute. It's definitely my favorite of the four for ease and lasting potential.

The topknot

The topknot

This one was a little confusing to me, possibly because I didn't have the hair wrap . Instead, I cut off the toe part of a sock and rolled it up to resemble a scrunchie. Then I looked up how to do a sock bun online, and in just two minutes I had this perfect-looking topknot. It was so easy and so secure that it stayed all day! I didn't even need hairspray or bobby pins. I would say this is my second favorite, since it was the easiest and most secure updo I've ever worn.

The pseudo bob

The psuedo bob

Okay, this one was super fun to do, and also only took maybe five minutes to perfect. It did take quite a few bobby pins to make it feel nice and secure, but once I had it together, I looked like a new me. This look does take a bit of hairspray to keep in place, and throughout the day I was messing with it to make sure it stayed in place. Yet, even with the little bit of fuss, I think it's a style I will definitely do again. While I loved this look almost the most, I have to put this one in third place, only because it took a little more effort to keep together.

The low, loose bun

Low, loose bun

This look was by far the toughest for me to figure out and keep in place. I thought I was following the tutorial perfectly, yet my end result looked nothing like the model's. Regardless, I thought how it ended up was still pretty cute, and I think maybe with more practice — and more bobby pins — I could eventually get it right. Because I didn't have a whole lot of luck, this look comes in last place for me, mostly because if I can't get it right quickly and easily the first time, it's not a look I can go to for a quick 'do.

You can be an awesome mom without sacrificing your style. With a little thought and effort, you can bust these mommy style myths.

Mommy myth: Moms look tired

Moms are tired, that's no myth. We don't have to look it, though! If you don't have time for a full face of makeup, apply mascara to brighten your eyes and lip gloss to brighten the rest of your face. Don't forget the under-eye concealer — it's a big must-have! You'll look wide awake and well-rested in seconds. Stash these items in your purse, car or diaper bag for quick applications when you need them.

JeansMommy myth: The mom jeans

It's a fashion term that every new mom dreads: mom jeans. While these jeans do, in fact, exist, the need for them does not. Moms have unlimited options when it comes to jeans. The number of brands, styles, fits and colors available is enough to make your head spin. You want skinny jeans? Go ahead, mom, they're out there! Even better is that you can usually find flats at fairly low prices, so you can amass a nice collection in a short amount of time. Woman applying skin cream

Plant-based antiaging

You carefully study the ingredient list when buying foods. Doesn't it make sense to do the same when choosing skin-care products? Find out more about the plant-based ingredient kinetin and how it works to improve the appearance of aging skin.

What is kinetin?

What is kinetin, anyway? This antiaging ingredient is a plant-derived hormone that promotes cell division. Kinetin works by stimulating skin at the cellular level, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and uneven pigmention. It also works as a powerful antioxidant, counteracting the aging effects of free radicals and helping to maintain younger-looking skin.

Dr. Marina I. Peredo, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, says kinetin is best for women showing signs of aging, as it helps to boost collagen and elastin production, "which will result in firmer skin and restore some of its elasticity."

How does it work?

Dr. Jessica Krant, board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City, says this plant-based antioxidant has shown a lot of promise in lab studies for being able to promote cell division. "What this means to humans in real life with real skin," says Krant, "is that if it's doing what we see in the lab, it can prevent cells from following more abnormal developmental paths and can support the more youthful robust type of cell division and old cell replacement that we would prefer to maintain longer."

Krant cautions that it's much harder to get clear evidence of what happens over time in real human skin, as opposed to observing cells in a lab petri dish. "If kinetin does what we want, it would be a great option for plant-based antioxidant antiaging, and it could be used by women of all ages because it is relatively nonirritating and gentle. It could be used for fine lines and fine wrinkles, slight discolorations like light brown spots and dulling of skin quality, or for thinning of skin, all of which are signs of chronic sun and environmental damage."

Is it right for me?

Unlike some other antiaging products, skin-care products with kinetin are ideal for sensitive skin, because kinetin is not an exfoliant. It works at the surface level of the skin without causing irritation.

Quick Tip:

Want to try kinetin? Dr. LeWinn by Kinerase is an affordable line of skin-care products containing clinical-strength kinetin.

"It's true that you are what you eat — and your diet can make its way to your skin," says leading dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad. "The work/life balance for 20-somethings can be erratic, and some turn to fast-food diets for a quick, inexpensive meal." Instead of loading up on unhealthy grease,  Murad suggests incorporating more natural fats like nuts, olive oils and seeds into your diet. These healthy fats promote glowing skin, strong hair and nails while naturally lowering triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels that can affect your health later in life.

"The skin is the body's largest organ.
Just as your brain and heart need sleep
to recharge and reboot, so does your skin."

Wear sunscreen daily

sunscreen

Protect your skin from the dangerous and damage-causing sun's rays by limiting sun exposure. Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Stuart H. Kaplan recommends wearing a full-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection with a minimum SPF 15 or 30 at all times, year round. Think you're safe to skip sunscreen on a cloudy day? Think again. "Even on cloudy days, 80 percent of the sun's UV rays come through," explains Kaplan.

Murad says sun protection is sometimes sacrificed by women because they want to avoid using too much product on the face. "Simply choose a moisturizer that already contains SPF, or mix a sun protector with liquid makeup for a two-in-one product," he suggests. "Sun damage is cumulative and shows up later as signs of aging, or in worst- case scenarios, as skin cancer."

Get some z's

It may seem like there just aren't enough hours in the day. The problem is, when you run a sleep deficit, your skin pays the price. "Get your beauty sleep," advises Kaplan. "The skin is the body's largest organ. Just as your brain and heart need sleep to recharge and reboot, so does your skin."

Take care of your eyes

One of the first areas to show aging is the eye area. "The skin around our eyes is thin, delicate and particularly vulnerable to environmental assaults," says Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine. "Late nights and a busy lifestyle can cause capillaries to become leaky," she explains. "The dark circles underneath the eyes are the result of the vascular pooling of deoxygenated blood peeking through the eye's super-thin skin." So what can you do? Alexiades-Armenakas recommends using a good eye cream containing caffeine, coffee seed extract, yerba mate tea extracts or chamomile to help constrict lymphatics and veins and to lighten dark circles.

lotionProtect your neck and chest

It's easy to forget to take care of the delicate skin on your neck and chest, says Dr. Jessica Krant, board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. Krant reminds women, "Put the same moisturizer on the sides of your neck and chest that you use on your face. You will thank yourself later, since the sun hits here hard, and the neck and chest skin doesn't protect itself as well as the face."

Expert Tip

Dr. Peggy Fuller of Esthetics Center for Dermatology in Charlotte, North Carolina, says, "Clean your phone handset and your cell phone periodically. Bacteria and germs can accumulate there and cause blemishes, because you hold these devices so close to your face."

Save your skin

Aging happens. That doesn't mean you have to look your age! We asked leading dermatologists to share their tips and tricks for saving your skin in your 30s.

Consistent skin-care routine

You may have skated through your 20s with an inconsistent approach to skin care, but now that you're in your 30s, it's time to get serious. Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine, explains that the first signs of aging usually appear in your 30s. "In addition to fine lines, skin is also drier and duller in color as the rate of cellular turnover decreases with age." Baby your skin by cleansing, moisturizing and protecting it on a daily basis. That's right — no more hitting the pillow without washing your face first!

Eye cream

Years of sun exposure, squinting, smiles and laughter may be starting to show in the eye area. If you haven't yet started using an eye cream, now is the time. Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad Inc., recommends using an eye cream with a broad-based SPF during the day to protect against both UVA and UVB radiation, and a hydrating/moisturizing eye cream in the evening.

sunscreenSunscreen

The eye area isn't the only place that needs sun protection. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to your face, ears, neck and chest every day. Choose a moisturizer that contains SPF so you're simplifying your morning routine with a product that does double duty.

Dr. LeWinn by Kinerase Lift & Resculpt Serum XK. Serums

Choose a serum with powerful antiaging ingredients like hyaluronic acid and kinetin, such as Dr. LeWinn by Kinerase Lift & Resculpt Serum XK. Apply the serum daily after cleansing to firm and smooth your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Peels

Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Stuart Kaplan recommends TCA or glycolic peels to help treat pigmentation and fine lines and to help maintain your skin's youthful appearance. Schedule chemical peels with your dermatologist or try an at-home kit.

Lasers

Talk to your dermatologist about laser therapy, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. "A deep resurfacing session with the Pearl Fractional laser can provide long-term reduction of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful appearance," says Alexiades-Armenakas.

generic ointmentRetinol

Skin-cell turnover slows down as you enter your 30s and 40s. Dr. Peggy Fuller of Esthetics Center for Dermatology in Charlotte, North Carolina, recommends counteracting the aging process with topical retanoids such as Retin-A to enhance skin turnover, prevent fine lines and improve wrinkles.

Microdermabrasion

Buff away that top layer of dull, dry skin with microdermabrasion. "Getting a monthly facial or a microdermabrasion can bring great benefits to the skin, such as tightening pores and evening out the skin tone," explains Dr. Marina Peredo, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Tip

Go to bed early! "So many American women don't sleep," says Dr. Peggy Fuller. "I recommend eight hours in bed every night. Even if you're not sleeping, at least you're resting. It will show in your face."

40 something woman skincare

40 and fabulous

You may feel like a kid on the inside, but when you hit 40, your skin might tell a different story. We asked leading dermatologists to share their favorite skin-saving secrets for women in their 40s.

Moisturizers

Hopefully, by the time you reach your 40s a daily moisturizer has become a no-brainer. Just make sure it's not the same moisturizer you were using in your 20s.

"Increase the thickness and richness of the moisturizers you use," says Dr. Jessica Krant, a board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. "As we get older, the skin does a poorer job of maintaining its own moisture level, so dryness can set in before we realize it, making fine lines look worse than they really are."

Krant says you shouldn't be afraid to use a thicker cream as long as it's made for the face. She explains that a facial moisturizer is highly unlikely to cause a breakout as long as it doesn't contain too many hidden irritating antiaging ingredients, such as vitamin C, retinol or glycolic acid. Make sure your moisturizer includes broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30. "Now's not the time to give up on it!"

Retinoids

Retinoids

"Now is the time to start a very sparing amount of bedtime retinoid cream," says Krant. She recommends you either start with over-the-counter retinol, which can be "plenty strong" and help with fine lines and dullness, or see a dermatologist for tretinoin, the prescription-only cream that is the only FDA-approved antiwrinkle cream in the world.

"All other cosmeceutical creams may work," says Krant, "but have not been vetted by the FDA, so we're always trying to guess whether they are doing anything and comparing it to their marketing claims."

In your excitement to banish wrinkles, don't overdo the retinoid! Krant warns that using too much at once can overstimulate the cell turnover, leading to redness, drying, peeling and increased acne breakouts.

Injectables and fillers

Tired of looking angry all the time from those "11" lines between your brows? Try smoothing them out with a shot of Botox. Bothered by those deep lines and wrinkles around your mouth? Schedule an appointment to plump them up with a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane. Not sure if you should splurge on injectables and fillers? Go ahead and treat yourself. You're 40. You deserve it.

Acne treatment

You're not supposed to get acne in your 40s, right? Some women actually get acne worse than ever at this age. This is due to normal hormonal changes, says Krant. "Don't underestimate it and try to dry up pimples with a spot treatment," she says. "See a dermatologist for a reasonable, safe regimen that will keep things in check."

Lasers

When we asked top dermatologists to share their tips on skin care for women in their 40s, one recommendation that came up numerous times was lasers. Beverly Hills-based dermatologist Dr. Stuart Kaplan recommends laser treatments to fix these specific issues:

  • Skin resurfacing — removes pigmentation on arms, chest, neck and face
  • Skin tightening — helps tighten up loose and crinkly skin on hands, neck and face
  • Skin elasticity — helps stimulate collagen production
  • Skin redness/ruddiness — helps reduce appearance of rosacea

Supplements

Vitamins and supplements

Skin care in your 40s isn't only about what you put on your body — it's also about what you put into it. Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad Inc., recommends a daily supplement regimen including a complex of amino acids, glucosamine, vitamin B6, antioxidants including grape seed extract, and vitamins A, C, D and E. "Internal skin care is just as important as topical skin-care products," he explains. "Topical products can only aid the 20 percent of your skin on the surface; internal will take care of the other 80 percent."

Expert tip:

Dr. Peggy Fuller of Esthetics Center for Dermatology in Charlotte, North Carolina, urges women in their 40s to invest in a dermatologist familiar with the latest antiaging strategies. "It's better to spend your budget on a reputable dermatologist than to waste enormous amounts of money on every lotion out there!"

Girl cleaning her face

Wondering if toner is a necessary step in your already complicated skin-care routine? We asked the experts what they think. Toners can help balance and brighten — the key is to choose the right toner for your skin type.

Top toners

Why use a toner?

Beverly Hills-based dermatologist to the stars Dr. Stuart Kaplan says he's often asked if toner is necessary if you are using a good-quality cleanser. His expert opinion? "A good-quality toner should remove any residual impurities on the skin while balancing the skin's natural pH," says Kaplan. "This allows your skin to better absorb the nutrients from your serums and moisturizers that you should be applying immediately after your cleansing and toning routine."

Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad Inc., says toner is the step that completes the cleansing process and is beneficial for the overall health of your complexion. "Given how busy we all are these days, people tend to rush through the cleansing process, and toners can remove any impurities that may not have been washed away during cleansing," says Murad.

Just take a look at the gunk on your cotton pad after using your toner, and you'll see what he means.

Toners for acne-prone skin

If you typically wear a lot of makeup or have acne-prone skin, Kaplan suggests using a nonalcoholic toner. "Nonalcoholic toners with ingredients like witch hazel and salicylic acid will pick up any residual makeup and slough off dead skin cells that tend to collect inside of pores."

Murad advises women with acne-prone skin to choose a toner with antioxidants like grape seed extract and vitamin E , chondrus crispus extract and witch hazel .

Toner picks for acne-prone skin:

Dickinsons witch hazel

Dr. Marina Peredo, a New York-based dermatologist and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, recommends Dickinson's witch hazel toner, which she says is great for acne and dark spots.

Clarifying toner

Dr. Murad suggests Murad clarifying toner to eliminate oil and control shine.

Toners for dry skin

What about women with dry skin? It turns out there are toners that can actually help with hydration. Kaplan recommends toners with ingredients such as rosewater and essential oils to rehydrate the skin while balancing pH.

Murad suggests women with dry skin or hormonal aging try a hydrating toner featuring lecithin to lock in moisture and restore suppleness. What other ingredients should you look for if hydration is the goal? Chamomile and cucumber extract soothe irritation, says Murad, while witch hazel is key for all skin types because it is gentle, tightens pores and helps restore natural pH balance.

Toner picks for dry skin:

Hydrating toner

Dr. Murad suggests Murad hydrating toner, which rehydrates skin and restores suppleness.

Kaplan md toner

Dr. Kaplan recommends KAPLAN MD hydrating toner, which quenches dry, dehydrated skin while softening and smoothing skin texture.

Toners for sun-damaged skin

So toner can clean out your pores, balance pH levels and hydrate dry skin, but did you know it can also help with sun damage? Murad recommends women with environmental damage, sun spots or age spots use a toner with ingredients such as bitter orange flower and coneflower extract to strengthen the skin's natural defense system while conditioning and hydrating.

Toner picks for sun-damaged skin:

essential c toner

Dr. Murad suggests Murad Essential-C toner to rejuvenate and protect damaged skin.

Expert Tip:"Most people use toner in the morning," says Dr. Peggy Fuller with Esthetics Center for Dermatology in Charlotte, North Carolina, "but I tell my patients to use it at the end of the day prior to washing the face to remove oil, dirt and debris." Fuller recommends Aqua Glycolic toner, "a very gentle, user-friendly toner for all skin types and ethnicities."

5 Ways to wear a blazer

A good blazer is the grown-up equivalent of the security blanket you had as a little girl. The moment you put one on you feel protected, polished and pulled together.
Woman wearing Zara blazer
One blazer, five ways

All buttoned up

A good blazer is the grown-up equivalent of the security blanket you had as a little girl. The moment you put one on you feel protected, polished and pulled together.

The best thing about blazers is that they work in almost any environment and have the ability to instantly change the tone of your outfit to perfectly suit the situation.

Heading to a job interview? A blazer will immediately make you feel more in control, with its strong, sharp shoulders. Stepping out for a hot date? That same blazer can add a tough, not-trying-too-hard edge to your pretty floral dress.

My wardrobe is filled with blazers, many from my days working as a reporter at NBC in New York, where they were my best friend behind the anchor's desk. These days I wear them with jeans and even cocktail gowns, and I feel just as comfortable in them on weekends as I do on the red carpet.

The secret when it comes to blazers is knowing how to get the most use out of what you have. So let's take a look at one blazer worn five different ways for five very different looks.

The blazer

Our blazer pick: the ZARA blazer with shoulder detailing. Its classic color and clean lines are balanced with just enough added style to jazz up any wardrobe.

1

Art opening: Over a sparkly or slinky dress

Want to make an impression at a cocktail party but don't want to look like a disco ball ? Simply add a sleek blazer to any sparkly or skintight dress to instantly tone down the flashy factor while camouflaging any lumps or bumps caused by that second glass of bubbly. Pair it with a killer pair of spiked stilettos and a sleek clutch and you've got a glamorous but sophisticated look worth toasting.

Art Opening: Over a sparkly or slinky dress

Styling tip: Make sure either your shoes or clutch has a touch of black to unite the look and balance the weight proportions.

Get the look

Forever 21 sequined metallic mini dress, $28; Victoria's Secret Collection cap-toe pump, $98; ASOS metal bar detail envelope clutch, $32

2

Sunday fun: With blue jeans

It's the ultimate in preppy chic: Add a well-cut blazer to your favorite denim jeans for a look that's relaxed, refined and suitable for anything from brunch with the girls to drinks with the boy. Team your black blazer with a crisp white tee and a chunky buckled belt, then add a long statement necklace, sunglasses and an oversized scarf for extra warmth.

Sunday Fun: With blue jeans

Styling tip: Wear your blazer unbuttoned with sleeves pushed up for a more relaxed feel.

Get the look

GAP favorite short-sleeve white V-Neck tee, $10; GAP 1969 real straight jeans, $70; GAP vintage leather belt, $30; Express floral and snake print infinity scarf, $35; Forever 21 owl stone necklace, $7

3

Friday night: As a top with evening shorts

Nothing adds class to a pair of short evening shorts faster than a black blazer. The masculine tailoring of a jacket and delicate flirty shorts create an alluring combination, while the modest silhouette of a blazer offers enough coverage and mystery to ensure even the shortest shorts stay on the right side of risqué. Instead of layering it over a blouse, wear the blazer as a top. Try cinching it in at the waist with a medium-width belt and add a black tank top underneath if you need extra coverage. Team it with a cross-body bag and a feminine pair of heels.

Friday Night: As a top with evening shorts

Styling tip: Roll sleeves a few inches below your elbow for a universally flattering look. And don't be afraid of wearing opaque stockings for a little extra warmth on cooler nights.

Get the look

So Low linen shorts, $62; BCBG Max Azria metallic waist belt, $48; Choies orange double arrow postman shoulder bag, $65; Charlotte Russe strappy platform pump, $36

4

Office chic: Teamed with a maxi skirt

For that special Kate Bosworth boho breed of chic, wear your favorite black blazer over a maxi skirt for a look that's classic and modern with just enough of a hint of hippie chic. The long flowing lines on the skirt perfectly play up the crisp cropped tailoring of the blazer. Style it with a simple fitted tank, chunky heels and a cuff.

Office Chic: Teamed with a Maxi skirt

Styling tip: Define your waist with a vintage inspired belt, drawing the eye to the narrowest part of your body.

Get the look

BCBG Max Azria toggle-waist belt, $58; Victoria's Secret knife-pleat maxi dress, $128; Forever 21 pinched cuff, $7

5

Anywhere chic: With black skinny pants

This look will see you through almost any occasion with class. Wear your black blazer with a pair of narrow black pants , and add a loose printed top. Finish the look off with a pair of black strappy heels — or even pick up a vibrant hue from the top — and you've nailed relaxed chic.

Anywhere chic: With black skinny pants

Styling tip: Wear the blazer unbuttoned and feel free to wear it with flats for daytime comfort.

Get the look

Eleven Paris tooth print tee in linen, $132; River Island eclectic wow bungee and crystal bracelet pack, $32; ASOS Hollywood heeled sandals, $74; Aqua Denim basic skinny, $68; ZARA ballerina with ankle strap, $90

Woman with finger on her lips

Ah, celebrities... They glow with makeup. They glow without makeup. Basically, they have the skin any girl would die to be in, including us! But how do they do it? Well, we made it our mission to find out.

Shh, don't tell!

1

Sunscreen

Poll: Would you shave your face?

Poll: Would you shave your face

Yep, we know. It sounds so simple, right? But think about it: How often do you remember to slather on sunscreen during the winter or when you're not planning on hitting up a body of water? Chances are, not nearly as often as you should. Celebs, on the other hand, are super strict with their SPF. C'mon, they're being stalked by the paparazzi, and their job is to basically look good all the time. So of course they don't forget to apply sunscreen daily .

2

Chemical peels

While we're convinced a lot of celebrities were just blessed with seriously great genetics , most have to work pretty darn hard to keep their skin in tip-top shape. According to licensed esthetician and nutritionist Elise May of The Skin Nutritionist, stars rely on regular chemical peels to maintain that gorgeous glow. "The right ones will leave you feeling refreshed and not red or irritated," she explains. "They stimulate collagen and elastin growth and encourage new cells to generate." The good news is, chemical peels are very accessible to the general public and can range in price from $80 to $130 per session, with visits as often as once per month.

3

Beauty sleep

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard A-listers state more than a few times that beauty sleep is the key to their flawless skin. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow swears by it, and Jennifer Lopez credits her glowing complexion to a good eight hours a night. So if you weren't already, get some sleep, girl!

4

Dermaplaning

Shelley Goodstein, a 48-year-old Ford model and the author of Face This, always books jobs at least 10 years younger than her age. Her secret to achieving younger looking skin? Sunscreen and shaving her face at least once or twice a month! "Celebrities do a very similar procedure called dermaplaning that costs hundreds of dollars," she says. "You can do it yourself with a 99-cent razor. The benefits are many. Your hair won't grow back thicker or darker, and not only will you exfoliate your skin and stimulate new collagen production, your foundation will glide on and fine hairs won't become trapped with powder."

5

Laser skin rejuvenation

A-list stars like Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston have long turned to laser skin rejuvenation to reverse years of sun damage and signs of aging. It can also help fade scars, reduce fine lines, improve your complexion and get rid of those pesky little liver spots.

6

Dedication

Simply stated, stars have it, and you don't. We kid, we kid! Seriously, though, your skin-care regimen is only as good as the time you take to put into it. Celebrities commit themselves to proper eating around the clock, exercising and slathering on the beauty products that will benefit their skin. They’re never not on their game, if you know what we mean...

Whip your skin into shape, stat

Whether you're all set to walk down the aisle next month or just want to look bomb at your upcoming 10-year reunion, commit yourself to this strict skincare regimen and we guarantee you'll be glowing like Gwyneth Paltrow in no time flat.

Week 1: Skin detox

Stop! Now, slowly but surely remove the beauty products scattered on your bathroom counter, and just let your skin be. "Oftentimes, with the intention of doing everything possible to turn back the hands of time or clear up our breakouts, we do so much that we actually exacerbate our problems," warns Dr. Jessica Krant, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Art of Dermatology.

Melissa Picoli, esthetician and founder of BijaBody health + beauty, agrees. She recommends rinsing your face with water and a warm washcloth for the first week. Then, tone with either witch hazel or sake, and moisturize with a simple face oil.

Week 2: Recovery mode

Since your skin has had the chance to balance its natural lipid barrier by now , wash your face with water only and wait 30 minutes, suggests Picoli. After a half hour is up, see how your skin feels. Is it oily? Is it dry? Is it a combination of both? Does it seem normal? Based on what you find, add a serum designed for your specific skin type to the simple regimen you began last week.

Krant says you can also reintroduce SPF into your daily moisturizer at this time. "Just be sure it's a minimum of SPF 30," she cautions.

Week 3: An antioxidant fix

There's no better time than this week to score your perfect moisturizer. "Look for ones that contain high concentrations of botanical oils and antioxidants," notes Picoli, "and steer clear of vitamin A or citrus oils in day-use products." Any antioxidant products that cause stinging or burning you should use very sparingly or not at all, informs Krant.

Also, find a cleanser you love, adds Picoli. "Because you know what balanced skin feels like now, it'll be easy to tell if it's too harsh or not."

Week 4: Retinoid time

Don't give up — you're almost there! "Now that you've got the mild cleansing and basic nonirritating antioxidants on board, incorporate a half-pea-sized amount of a topical retinoid to your face nightly," recommends Krant. "You should do this at least an hour after washing so your skin can tolerate it." Voila. You're back in business, lady!

Calling all girls who love to sleep in! Cut down on the time it takes you to get gorgeous each morning by following this simple, no fuss skin-care routine for a fabulous face that glows.

Low-maintenance beauty

Remember: BB creams are your BFF

BB cream

In case you've been hiding out under a rock recently, BB creams are the latest craze to make their way over from Asia, and we have to admit, we couldn't be more pumped. So what exactly do these BB creams do? Well, lazy ladies, they perform the task of your serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation and oftentimes even your SPF, all rolled into one product. Because each one is different, though, it's critical to find a BB cream that's just right for you. "Some are heavier, some have more sunscreen and some have more irritating antiaging ingredients," points out Dr. Jessica Krant, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Art of Dermatology. "They are meant to do many things at once, and we all know how hard it is to multitask." Ah, we couldn't agree more!

Wash your face with a gentle moisturizing cleanser

Now that you've got your go-to BB cream all picked out, don't forget to wash your face each morning with a gentle moisturizing cleanser before you put it on, advises Dr. Krant. This will rid your skin of all the dirt and debris that's accumulated on your face and in your pores overnight . "Pat your face dry next, and apply your BB cream." Dr. Krant suggests finding one with antiaging ingredients, sunscreen and a tint. Guess what? You're all finished up for the morning.

Take it all off

After a long day at the office slaving away per usual, the last thing you want to do as you walk in the front door is remove your makeup, but trust us, it's pretty necessary. "When you get home , take off your BB cream with a mild makeup remover and rinse with a gentle cleanser or a light glycolic wash. Then, apply a mild, fragrance-free moisturize," recommends Dr. Krant.

Apply a topical retinoid

Retinoids

Don't worry — this is the last step, we swear! About an hour later, but not right before bedtime, Krant says to apply a half-pea-sized amount of a topical retinoid . This will help keep your skin from freaking out, fade scars, stimulate cell turnover, exfoliate and even diminish sun spots. But most of all, it'll give you that gorgeous, rosy glow every girl are after.

J. Crew

This straight legged jean slims throughout the hip and thigh for a straight and elongating figure. The Matchstick is the perfect blend between the skinny-mini legging and a standard bootcut, but the second reason worth coughing up more cash for these is its comfort. No matter how many times its worn, the stretch still feels tight and snug. .
