New York Fashion Week day 7: Miley Cyrus and Willow Smith hit the shows with their moms

Jada Pinkett Smith accompanied Willow to the tents Wednesday, while Miley and her mom Tish supported a special friend prior to Miley's own NYC party tonight.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Willow Smith and Miley Cyrus and Trish Cyrus

Wednesday must have been mother daughter day at NYFW! Jada Pinkett Smith brought her daughter Willow with her to a few shows, including Narciso Rodriguez and Michael Kors, where they sat next to Zoe Saldana and Hilary Swank. Willow excitedly snapped photos of the fashions on her phone as the models strutted. You're never too young to learn about style, right?

Before heading to Marchesa, Miley Cyrus and her mom Tish attended Rachel Zoe's show alongside Cosmopolitan editor Joanna Coles. Miley is on the cover of this month's issue, which Rachel styled, and she's celebrating her Cosmo cover tonight with a party at Acme Restaurant. Perhaps Rachel will come, too? Then again, she may be on mommy duty tonight, as she brought her son Skyler to NYC with her for Fashion Week. He even made an appearance at Rachel's show, adorably dressed in a cream knit onesie with a matching beanie, natch.

Katherine Heigl also hit up the tents, sans her two daughters, for the second day in a row, sitting front row at the J. Mendel runway show and schmoozing with the designer backstage. Yesterday, she attended Jenny Packham and Reem Acra's shows.

We literally can't get enough of Rachel Zoe. And with the premiere of The Rachel Zoe Project just weeks away on March 6 on Bravo, we couldn't wait to see this fashion heavyweight in action showing her latest collection. Here are our favorite moments from her amazing collection.

What we saw

Boho-chic pieces! Zoe really stuck to her roots this season, sending models dressed in '70s-inspired long cardigans , wide-brim hats and oversize coats down the runway. Plus, like many collections we saw, most of the line consisted of black and camel pieces. But Zoe did the unexpected and sent all white looks down the runway in between an otherwise dark collection.

Rachel shows us spring's hottest shoes trends! >>

Our favorite piece

The fur! Duh! It wouldn’t be a Rachel Zoe collection without fur accents! Her most standout piece was a gray fur coat with leather accents. She even rocked it herself when she took her bow at the end of the show. A classic fur coat with a little edge is a total must-have for fall!

What to buy now

Obsessed with Zoe as much as we are? Well, since these fabulous fall items won’t be available for a while, check out this adorable ruffle dress that's available right now! Not only are ruffles a major spring trend, but this specific frock totally performs a double duty. Here's how we would style it for work and play.

For work

Add a white blazer to cover your arms for the office, and put on a pair of simple silver pumps to pull this cheerful, springtime look together.

Rachel Zoe look for work

Rachel Zoe Ginta Textured Dress $275, Topshop Ponte Jet Pocket Blazer $70, INC International Concepts Selva Pumps $80

For the weekend

Slip into your highest heels, add a sparkly clutch and you're ready for date night with your man.

Donna Karan talks fashion and philanthropy

After Haiti was devastated by an earthquake, DKNY designer Donna Karan wanted to help. She's partnered with American Express to sell handcrafted horn bracelets from the country exclusively on Twitter.

Donna Karan

Trends come and go in fashion, but Donna Karan knows giving back is always in style. The DKNY designer took a break in between her New York Fashion Week shows to chat about conscious consumerism on Wednesday at the American Express Skybox. She also shared why Haiti is so close to her heart.

"We can create jobs; we can create meaning; we can create consciousness; we can create the change."

"Haiti is a commitment that I've made and I hope every single designer makes to get involved... to work with the people there," she said. "This is not just an earthquake that happened. This is a country that needs to be redeveloped. We shot Adriana Lima down in Haiti. Last spring, I shot my entire fall campaign down in Haiti. It's all about bringing people down to see the endless possibilities."

Even if you can't make it down to Haiti, you can help the cause by buying the handcrafted horn bracelet, with proceeds benefiting the citizens there, by just using a hashtag  on Twitter.

"This is couture," she explained. "It's a couture bracelet made by hand in Haiti!"

But why did she decide to sell them strictly using social media? "No one person can do anything and I think that's the beauty of Twitter... creating a community of consciousness and change," she explained. "We can create jobs; we can create meaning; we can create consciousness; we can create the change. And the beauty of this Twitter opportunity is phenomenal."

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Rihanna and Beyonce

It's Friday's Fashion Obsessions' Grammys edition! Find out which celeb styles made me do a double take this week.

Rihanna at the 2013 Grammys Awards

Rihanna

I know many people will disagree, but Rihanna's style is often hit or miss for me. Obviously, the music superstar always looks undeniably sexy , but ironically, her barely there frocks often come off as more turn off than turn on. So I guess you could say I was pretty excited when Rihanna turned up the heat at this week's Grammy Awards in a sexy yet chic red ensemble.

The flowy red Azzedine Alaia dress showed off Rihanna's amazing figure in all the right places with sheer overlay, yet also left much to the imagination. A bit more coverage in the breast area would have been wise — we don't want a nip slip, do we Ri-Ri? — but all in all, the look was a nice change for the singer. The color looked amazing and I'm more than a tad obsessed with her soft, flowy waves and bold red lip.

The final verdict? I'm hoping this look teaches Ri-Ri that you can look sexy while staying a bit more undercover. This look showed off a softer side of Rihanna, and I'm hoping we see more of this gal!

Beyonce at the 2013 Grammy Awards

Beyonce

After rocking the Super Bowl stage in major leather and lace style, Beyonce took to the Grammys red carpet in one of spring's hottest trends: black and white. The singer made a major fashion statement in this stunning Osman Studio jumpsuit and it's making me rethink my standard uniform of dresses and tights.

On a red carpet where sexy cutouts and glam gowns reigned, Beyonce really stood out in pants. I love the stark black and white contrast, the sleeves and her sleek ponytail! With such a high fashion look, Beyonce was smart to keep her accessories to a minimum and sported some super cute geometric cuffs and simple black pumps.

The final verdict? Beyonce continued her reign as one of music's style queens and brought her fierce A game, as always. I can't wait to see what she wears next!

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Keri Russell

We have a total crush on Keri Russell's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!
Kerri Russell at the NYC premiere of The Americans

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Keri Russell's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

If the recent red carpets are any indication, side parts and sideswept locks are making a major comeback! There's something so effortlessly glam about the look, don't you think? It's done up on one side, yet not so fussy on the other. The perfect combo, if you ask me!

I recently fell for this sideswept look Keri Russell rocked at the NYC premiere of The Americans and went to her mane man, Brian Magallones, to get the scoop on how to steal the look for ourselves!

Get the look

"Keri was wearing an amazing pair of leather pants and suede top by Alexander McQueen. I wanted her hair to look glamorous and appropriate for the red carpet, yet still modern and edgy to complement what she was wearing. I decided to go with a modern take on a classic '50s look."

  1. To create this look, I started by taking 2-inch sections of hair and curling them with a curling iron and pinning them up in pin curls.
  2. As I was curling, I sprayed each section with Aveda Volumizing Tonic to add volume and hold.
  3. I used a 1-inch curling iron around the face for a more defined wave and a large 1-3/4-inch iron for the rest of the head.
  4. Once the pin curls had cooled and set, I removed each pin curl and flat ironed the ends. The straight ends are what give this look that modern edge.
  5. Next, I created a deep side part for drama and brushed the hair to relax the curl and shape the wave around the face.
  6. I finished it off by running some Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss through to add amazing shine, and held it in place all night long with Aveda Control Force hairspray.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Adele and Florence Welch

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Adele and Florence Welch's Grammy fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Adele

Adele

We just love Adele's amazing voice and her adorable accent to death and we totally respect her for trying something other than her usual go-to black dress at the Grammy Awards, but this Valentino couture number is hitting all of the wrong notes.

The ornate red floral pattern is extremely busy to begin with and the high waist and tea-length hem aren't doing Adele's figure any favors. When this dress was originally shown on the runway, it was floor length and we think that version would've suited the singer so much better.

Also, Adele's red and black patterned shoes are so matchy matchy! A simple black or red pump would have worked nicely. Her updo and makeup look nice, though.

The final verdict? Although this look isn't our favorite, Adele went home a winner when she scored Best Pop Solo performance. Congratulations and props for trying something new wardrobe-wise, even if it didn't quite work.

Florence Welch

Florence Welch

Here we have another case of when bad fashion happens to amazing singers with Florence Welch. The Florence + the Machine singer has powerful pipes but her fashion sense could use some fine tuning.

Her green Givenchy gown isn't inherently awful... the green sequined fabric is pretty and the gown is well-fitted, but it's those spiked accents everywhere that are painful for us. The dress featured spikes on the shoulder, arms and torso and reminded us of a dinosaur or a reptile.

A few strategically placed spikes on your shoes or perhaps just on the shoulders can add a fun edge to an outfit, but these are just overkill.

The final verdict? Flo's fashion don't could be turned into a do if she just ditched those allover spikes. Her emerald gown is tailored to a T and the color looks lovely next to her red hair and skin tone.

The best of New York Fashion Week!

Fashion Week has come and gone in a stylish blur, and we're giving our own props to the best and worst of the week.
Miley Cyrus at NYFW 2013
Matt Damon and wife at NYFW 2013
Willow Smith at NYFW 2013

We can't believe Fashion Week is almost over! Just last week, we were celebrating the kickoff to NYFW but today, it's time to say goodbye until September. Here at SheKnows, we're giving out some awards of our own.

Most Outfit Changes in One Day

Miley Cyrus

She really made the most of her day at NYFW, first turning heads in a cherry red jumpsuit with a plunging neckline at Rachel Zoe's show. Then she switched into a white ruffled peplum dress for the Marchesa presentation, where she may have been scoping out wedding dresses. Finally, Miley donned a white Maison Martin Margiela maxi dress and cropped leather jacket for her Cosmopolitan cover party that night. With three outfits in one day, we're guessing she didn't carry on her luggage for this trip!

Best Party

Prabal Gurung for Target!

With it's carnival theme, pop up store to shop the collection on site and a special performance by Ne-Yo, this was the best party we've been to in a long time. We also loved seeing Elizabeth Olsen, since she doesn't go out all that much. It's great to see a fresh face on the fashion scene!

Cutest Couple

Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso

We love how nice , normal and down to earth they were when we chatted with Matt at the Naeem Khan show, where he was on hand to support the designer. Matt and Luciana held hands throughout the show and looked totally in love. We just hope he found some Valentine's Day plans!

Youngest Fashionista

Willow Smith

She's only 12 years old but Willow snagged prime seating at not one, but two, shows: Michael Kors and Narciso Rodriguez. Her mom, Jada Pinkett Smith, joined her.

Best Dressed

Olivia Palermo

We lost count of how many shows we saw her at, but one thing's for sure: she always looked fab! We like the cute fur hat she rocked during winter storm Nemo last weekend, and how she looks chic without trying too hard.

Biggest Do

Babies!

Both Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoebrought their mini-me's along to their runway shows. Cute babies are always in style!

Biggest Don't

Deena Nicole Cortese

Jersey Shore's Deena Nicole Cortese walked the runway in a fashion show for charity. This is NYFW, babe, not the boardwalk in Seaside Heights. Sorry.

The half up fishtail braid

1

To give your hair some texture, spray it with Redken Wool Shake. Then brush it before styling.

Fishtail braid step 1

2

Section off your hair from ear to ear, and create a half braid
to use as a base for your fishtail.

Fishtail braid step 2

3

Stick your fingers into the top of the braid, making a hole, and loop the end of
your hair through that hole. Be sure to pull it tight.

Fishtail braid step 3

4

Now, begin fishtailing your hair all the way down, securing the end
of your braid with a clear elastic hair tie.

Fishtail braid step 4

5

On the rest of your hair , use a curling iron to create tousled waves. Run your fingers through the waves to break them up, and complete your look with hairspray.

The boho side braid with a twist

1

Create texture and volume in your hair using a curling iron and volumizing hairspray.

Side braid step 1

2

Take two small sections of hair on either side of your head. Starting behind your ear,
make a tiny braid on one side and secure with a clear hair band.

Side braid step 2

3

On the opposite side, loosely braid back what would be your “bangs” , stopping short so that the end of your hair will flow into your larger braid.
Leave a small section of hair out at the very front of your head like in the photo.

Side braid step 3

4

Create a larger braid next, and secure the end with a clear elastic hair band.
Pin back the front section of hair you left out earlier and spritz with hairspray.

Side braid step 4

5

Finally, flatten your big braid with a straightening iron. Then loosen it by lightly tugging at the sides.

Side braid step 5

6

Grab the small braid, and slowly weave it into the opening of the bigger braid. Continue loosening
the braids, and finish off your look with hairspray. You can wrap the end of the small braid
around the elastic on the bigger braid too to conceal it.

1

First, brush your hair to ensure a smooth palette for styling.

of your ponytail around the base. Secure with a bobby pin.

Ponytail braid step 2

3

Grab another small section of hair from the bottom of your ponytail, and leave it out
before you begin braiding. Create a very relaxed braid on the rest of your pony. Tie off the end
with an elastic band .

Ponytail braid step 3

4

Flatten your braid with a straightening iron, and then tug at the sides to expand/loosen the braid.

Ponytail braid step 4

5

Take that small section of hair you left out earlier, and slowly weave it
all the way down the center of your braid.

Ponytail braid step 5

Summer's mom on the go look

out and about fashion

As a mom, you spend half your life running around town with your kids, but that doesn't mean you can't look cute while doing it! To help you feel chic on the go, we've come up with some cute and easy options that will have you looking stylish and feeling comfortable all day long.

Being on the go feels so much better when your clothes are unrestrictive, comfy and cute. This is why we suggest opting for leggings and loose fitting tops or tunics layered with a long cardigan. When you're out running errands all day, these things make for pure outfit perfection!

Summer's outfit

When I'm out and about, I'm more about comfort and layers than anything... although, I still want to look like I somewhat tried as well. Cardigans are the best too, because they're easy to take on or off depending on how the weather changes throughout the day. This is one staple I highly suggest. Make sure to stock up on different styles and colors as well. And then of course, I skip the heels and fancy shoes, because who wants to deal with that getting in and out of the car?

Could snake venom skin care be the new "it" beauty item?

the bite

Skin care fads are constantly evolving in Hollywood and a new trend is fast approaching. Snake venom is said to fight the aging process and is predicted to be the start of a new beauty revolution.

If you’re sick of constantly having to inject your face with toxic chemicals and formulas to keep your skin looking young, then snake venom skin care products might be your new saving grace.

Why snake venom?

While you probably think of snake venom as harmful, it actually can produce anti-aging benefits when applied topically to the skin. Some have even said the results are better than Botox! Through years of research, it was found that snake venom temporarily inhibits muscle activity, which prevents and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Who would have thought to incorporate such a lethal substance into your skin care routine? Well, several years ago Israel and Nate Dakar, creators and co-founders of Sonya Dakar Skincare, discovered the benefits of temple viper venom. Yes, they studied the effects of real cobra viper venom, but have no fear — snakes were not harmed during the process.

Is it safe to use?

After years of research and development, Sonya Dakar Skincare produced a synthetic version, a.k.a. "syn-ake," a harmless synthetic tripeptide that mimics the effects of snake venom when applied on the skin.

We asked Sonya Dakar Skincare’s Beauty Director, Sarah Dakar, why people should choose to use products with snake venom in them over other anti-aging formulas.

“While everyone has different skin care needs, our exclusive MicroVenom formula is ideal for individuals looking to incorporate a preventive and/or restorative anti-aging component into their skin care regimen. Choosing skin care products with "syn-ake" may prove to be a viable alternative to invasive procedures like lasers, Botox or Juvederm. Our MicroVenom technology includes nine anti-aging ingredients, helping cells from all angles. ”

It is recommended to have a consultation with a skin care specialist before use, but the synthetic snake venom is engineered to be completely safe and harmless.

Is it really better than Botox?

With Botox, you have to get frequent injections to maintain results. Snake venom, on the other hand, is painless and relatively hassle-free, making it an easy step to add into your skin care regimen to achieve the same results. After about three weeks of consistent application, users should notice a dramatic difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

This new skin care miracle has even slithered its way onto the faces of Hollywood's hottest celebs such as India.Arie, Josh Duhamel and Fergie, who are already fans of this fake facelift frenzy.

Whether you're a young fresh-faced beauty or just looking for a new product to spice up your daily routine, snake venom skin care products might be the perfect beauty secret for you!

Boy Talk

It’s no secret that when it comes to beauty, boys just don’t get it. So it’s totally understandable that they’d be a little confused by our party nails, pixie cuts and the whole going to the bathroom in pairs things. Don’t worry, boys — we’re here to explain. We asked 10 guys to confess their biggest beauty questions, and then we had 10 lovely ladies answer them!

1

Why do women go to the
bathroom in pairs? — Kenny K.

"We go to the bathroom in pairs so we can gossip, reapply lipstick and floss each other’s teeth with our hair . It’s also a danger issue because there could be a polar bear waiting in there or a giant alligator, which could require two women to subdue. Safety first. The truth? We want to talk about you in a place where you won’t be able to creepily eavesdrop.” — Rachel C.

2

Why do girls cut their
hair short? — Drew H.

scissor and comb

“I think girls cut their hair short because they feel like it will be more versatile. Or they’re just tired of having to put their hair in a ponytail. When I cut mine, I was traveling to Spain and wanted something chic and easy. But I quickly found out it wasn’t easier than my long hair. My friend cut hers off because she thought it would be more professional for work.” — Kaitlin S.

3

Why do some women use lip
gloss instead of lipstick? — Dan C.

lip gloss

"Because lip gloss is more goof-proof. By that I mean if you accidentally color outside the lines, it’s less noticeable.” — Elise H.

4

I've used Q-tips only to clean my ears.
What else do girls use them for? — Daniel S.

“Makeup application, cleaning up our cuticles after nail polish, removing smudges, bleaching tiny spots of tomato sauce on white shirts and carefully dabbing pee on those elusive pink strip pregnancy tests.” — Bryce G.

5

Why do women wear a fake orange looking tan when it doesn't
even look good?
— Daniel O.

"I ask myself the same question! Hmm, because some girls think looking like Doritos slapped them in the face is cute?” — Amanda T.

6

When is it OK for yourman to see you
without makeup?
— Harold W.

foundation

"After you spend the night together for the first time . Always wash your face before bed, ladies!” — Jessee E.

7

Why do women always think they need to lose weight no matter how much we
tell them they don’t? — Adam T.

scale

"There are two main reasons girls insist they need to lose weight even when their dudes tell them they don’t. Number one is insecurity. Maybe homegirl is just fishing for compliments? Or perhaps she wants to gauge the sincerity of your, ‘Babe you’re crazy, you don’t need to lose weight' response. We know you’ll say it, but how you say it matters too. Number two is a thwarted self-image. Regardless of the reason though, most likely your girl wants to know that you love her even if she has put on a few pounds.” — Julia D.

8

Why do girls go through so much trouble
with their hair, and why can’t they wash it every time they shower? — Sebastian S.

"My hair is an absolute travesty if I do nothing to it. Frizz, random curls, straight pieces, no shape — you name the problem, I’ve got it. Smoothing out my hair to be straight or in loose curls definitely changes the shape of my face and my overall look. And after all of the time it takes to do it, I can’t commit to that regimen every day.” — Abby V.

No poo?

9

Why do girls think it's normal to cake
on a ton of makeup for literally
everything they do? Geoff G.

"I think some women cake on a lot of makeup because they were never taught the proper technique for applying foundation evenly and smoothly. Others just believe heavy makeup will make them look more sexually attractive to men.” — Mandy B.

10

Why do girls paint one nail
a different color? — Colin K.

“Simply put, it’s fun! Having a party nail draws attention to your hands and is like a fashion statement on your finger. What’s not to love?” — Eliza S.

Q&A with Courtney Allegra

The 15-year-old fashion phenom chats with us about her designs, fashion inspirations and hopes for the future.

In high school, most girls are worrying about academics, boys and hanging out with friends. But 15-year-old Courtney Allegra worries about building her fashion empire.

The young design star, first shown to the world at Hollywood’s Top Designer event in 2012, has put herself on the fast track to being a style powerhouse.

The San Diego native, budding actress, model and equestrian champion credits her serious passion and the support of her family for her overwhelming success. With her collection now up on her new website, Allegra details how her dream became a reality as well as what’s coming up next for her.

SheKnows: How did your passion for design come about?

Courtney Allegra: I’ve been designing since I was a little girl. I love it. I started sketching my ideas first but it was just for fun, just for me. My mom told me I should start manufacturing my own stuff. I entered my designs into a fashion show. After that I made my website and that was it. I decided it would be better if I could share my stuff with people!

SK: You first showcased your line at Hollywood’s Top Designer last spring. What was that experience like?

CA: I loved it! I was nervous at first, but once the clothes started going down the runway, it got easier and I got more excited. People really received it well and it got me some great coverage. I just felt better because everything turned out great.

SK: Your current collection boasts a lot of edge and individuality. What was the idea behind this line?

CA: Well, I actually wanted to do more of a goth line originally and then I blended more goth and urban styles for a more modern look. I love studs and leather, so that all fit in. I’m actually starting to incorporate more corsets into the line too.

SK: Who are some of your top designer inspirations?

CA: Armani, definitely. I love their leathers and funny story, but I went into their store once and saw that they use the same hot pink leather that I use, so that was hilarious! Dolce & Gabbana is also a favorite.

SK: You’ve said that your travels have influenced your designs. Is there any place or particular culture that you’ve pulled from for inspiration?

CA: Actually in France, I got to go to this mountainside village and see all of the variety and colors and interact with the people, so I was inspired by that. Also in Toulon, France, they had this lavender ice cream that was in this beautiful lilac kind of color and I loved that so I’ve incorporated the lilacs and lavender shades into some of my designs.

SK: Who are some of your favorite style icons today?

CA: Oh gosh, this is a hard one! I’d say Adam Lambert, Jennifer Lawrence and Selena Gomez. I love their looks.

SK: Can you share any info about the designs that you’re currently working on?

CA: I’m working on a lot of light colors and even Chinese-inspired corsets with Geisha colors and prints. It’s a big shift — it’s really different. I wanted to add a touch of variety and some new things for summer.

SK: What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?

CA: Stay focused. Especially if you’re a teen, it’s easy to get distracted with different things. Just keep that focus on everything you do.

The art of dressing cool: How to look the part

$
0
0
There are some people that just “have it” when it comes to how they dress. No matter where they are, they seem to exude an effortless brand of coolness that immediately makes you want to go home and change! From Olivia Palermo to Kate Moss, what's even more lust-worthy than their clothes is the fact that they look so at ease in them… as if they were born that way. And while “dressing cool” is an innate talent, like most talents, it can be learned. So this week I’m sharing the two pieces that will immediately help you look cool no matter your age or stage.

Oliva Palmero and Elle Macpherson

Leather leggings

No single piece of clothing has more cool appeal than a pair of leather leggings, whether they're of the plush leather or the high tech vegan variety. No longer reserved for rock stars and supermodels, these days almost anyone can benefit from the street cred injection that a well-cut pair of leather leggings brings to anyone who slips them on.

Yes, there’s the historical reference to many of the great musicians who wore them as a second skin. But deeper than that, why we love them is that they represent the best of the creative spirit — hard edged and determined and yet soft and fragile. Like the bad boys who have always worn them, they are a thick skin masking a secretly sensitive soul.

Wear it with: These days you can wear leather leggings with practically anything, from oversized rocker tees to a structured blazer to delicate silk chiffon shirts. I’ve even seen a painfully chic Parisian gal wear them with a satin slim line tuxedo blazer to a black tie event and make all the girls in big ball gowns want to go home and cry.

Celebrity examples: Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Kate Bosworth, Heidi Klum

Cut outs

There’s something innately naughty and fascinating about a strategically placed cut out. They hint that there's more to you than meets the eye and tempts the viewer to go in search of this illusive, mysterious other side. Showing everything you have is boring and that’s why they create a sense of mystery, of catching a glimpse of the unobtainable.

Wear it with: Anything from a red carpet gown at a black tie gala to an otherwise conservative silk blouse at work. The key is to show a piece of flesh that’s not hyper sexualized. For example, avoid the cleavage and go for the small of your back.

Celebrity examples: Kerry Washington, Elle Macpherson, Miranda Kerr, Kate Hudson

  • Chunky rose gold men’s watch

I think every mom can agree that once their bundle of joy enters this world, life as they know it changes completely — especially style. Yes, we see celebrities looking chic and stylish almost immediately after giving birth, but we do need to remember that they usually have a team making sure that they are as fabulous as ever! For the rest of us, our style naturally changes as our family and responsibilities grow. Here real moms and mommy bloggers tell us ways that their style transformed once they became a mother:

Mommy style

I think every mom can agree that once their bundle of joy enters this world, life as they know it changes completely — especially style. Yes, we see celebrities looking chic and stylish almost immediately after giving birth, but we do need to remember that they usually have a team making sure that they are as fabulous as ever! For the rest of us, our style naturally changes as our family and responsibilities grow.

We asked real moms and mommy bloggers to tell us how their styles transformed once they became mothers. The answers might surprise you!

Trend #1: Comfort and convenience!

The first trend I noticed when talking to “real moms” was that their wardrobes transformed from expensive and dressy to basic, comfortable and budget-friendly. Moms need wardrobes that can withstand anything from spit up and playing in the dirt at the park to cooking and cleaning. Obviously, nicer designer duds are saved for work or a night out on the town.

As a beauty and style expert and a mom of two young boys myself, I have noticed the evolution of my “mommy clothes” and my “dress up clothes.” I never used to care about “washability” but now it is a big deal. I can’t just wait to dry clean clothes or to sit and hand wash pieces. I need to be able to throw it in the washer and dryer and be good to go!

Here is what other moms had to say:

Molly Skyar

Conversations With My Mother

Molly SkyarAfter becoming a mother, I've found that I buy more work staples for my wardrobe such as black skinny pants and longer tops because I have less time to shop and need quick and easy dressing solutions. On the days I don't have to go in to an office, I'm all about Lululemon yoga pants. I wear them everywhere. They are technically workout pants, but they have a nicely tailored fit, so if you add a cute top and an accessory , you can pull it off as an easy, casual look and it's super quick to put together. I stick with black for the pants. I have no time to spend on myself in the morning between getting the kids up and going to school, making breakfast and lunches and getting out the door on time!

suzanne

I'd say now I dress for comfort. My clothes are definitely inexpensive and washable!

Dessa Meyer

The truth is, my style hasn't really evolved. It's actually gone somewhat downhill as I don't have time to maintain my clothes, beauty, etc. Yet, I try to keep things more simple and stick to nice, good quality basics when it comes to items like coats, boots and cashmere sweaters. My clothes for going out are nice and better quality than my stay at home mommy clothes. I now realize my day clothes don't need to be expensive as I am cooking and rushing around all day. I think this separation of almost two wardrobes helps me feel even more special when I go out since I'm excited to wear my nicer clothes.

Trend #2: Find your chic go-to outfits

Moms have become savvy at pulling together outfits that are stylish and easy to wear. Instead of just wearing sweats all day, we know that a great pair of jeans paired with a blazer and perfect accessories can take us from day to night:

Jennifer

Perfectly Disheveled:

Jennifer BrandtBelieve it or not, I started to care more about how I dressed after becoming a mom. Though I do spend a good portion of my days in workout clothes , when I go "out," I do think about style and want to look cute. I have worked with my dear friend and stylist, Robin Saperstein of High Heel in a Haystack, at coming up with adorable, layered and chic looks that can be taken from day to night, park to party. The key piece, I think, is a fabulous pair of skinny jeans and a cute, comfy blazer.

Lisa Haisha

Creator of Soul Blazing:

Lisa HaishaMy style went from getting up at 6 a.m., working out, showering, dressing up and putting on high heels and makeup to do coaching, business and marketing calls to rolling out of bed, then throwing on sweats, a cozy top, flat shoes and then putting my hair in a ponytail. Then attending to my daughter's needs. This was the first year. Now, four years later, I'm more balanced. I wear some makeup and dress casual nice .

romy schorr

Blogger at RomyRaves.com:

Romy SchorrIn all honesty, it really didn't change. I've always dressed to flatter my curves, to wear statement making accessories and lightly embraced trends. While it hasn't changed since I've become a mom, I've never let myself go either . I consider myself a hip, on trend mom, and I embrace that!

Deep silver

I definitely became more functional. Not in a boring way, just in a more applicable way to having kids in my life. Sassy sandals went from having a 3-inch heel to being flat. Nice pants were traded in for easy wash trendy jeans. Marc Jacobs handbag was traded in for a patent leather diaper bag. I welcome my new evolved style and I love my two little accessories that are always by my side — Bella, age 4 and Anya, age 1.

Trend #3: Conservative mommy

Another evolution seems to be be that moms have become more conservative after having kids. I know I became much more conscious of low-cut blouses and even my bathing suits became more conservative. Even at the local swimming club, I found myself wanting to wear a one-piece or a tankini even though it would have never crossed my mind in the past. Not so much for figure concealing, but for modesty and “playability” .

Other moms shared:

Penny earnhart

I realized that my daughters pay close attention now to what I wear, so I make smarter choices so that I am setting a good example for them from the very beginning. They even help me decide which shoes to wear now and I usually agree. The catch is that if I don’t agree, I shouldn’t have asked them because I always try to follow through with their decision!

Tracy Horan

I stopped wearing clothes that were too revealing — no more short shorts or teeny-bikinis. No more white clothes either!

Help out,
look good

Fashion can help you look good, but did you know it can also make you feel good and let you lend a helping hand to someone in need? We’ve got the scoop on five cool clothing and accessory companies that give back.

1

ESPEROS

This philanthropic company believes in the importance of education and making education accessible to kids everywhere. Why? Because the sad fact is that more than 125 million children in the developing world will never receive even primary education. But the good news is that you can help by buying a beautiful bag from ESPEROS. With every bag they sell, they help send a child in need to school for a year. It's a unique opportunity to make a big difference in the life of a child by choosing to buy a bag that can help make education possible. Plus their bags are pretty awesome.

2

KAYU

KAYU sunglases

Add some stylish and expertly handcrafted sunglasses and handbags to your wardrobe while also supporting kids in Cambodia. KAYU works with the nonprofit Awareness Cambodia to help purchase backpacks and school supplies for students in rural Cambodia. The kid-centric organization has been working in Cambodia for the last 20 years, not only providing school supplies to children but also running an orphanage and medical program in the area.

3

Out of Print

Out of Print shirt

What’s your favorite story or novel? From The Great Gatsby to Alice in Wonderland to Little Women, chances are you’ll find a product at Out of Print featuring a title you loved. Choose from ultra-soft tees for men, women and kids, tote bags, stationery, phone cases and more. For each product sold, one book is donated to a community in need through the company’s partner Books For Africa.

4

TOMS

Toms shoes

We love TOMS. Not only are the shoes comfy and stylish, but they make it easy to feel good about shopping for footwear. For every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS donates another pair to a child in need in countries such as Argentina, Cambodia and South Africa. The generous shoe company doesn’t just send old or worn out pairs — TOMS sends new shoes that have been specially designed to match the recipient children’s environment and location in the world.

5

FIGS

FIG tie

Need a gift for your guy for an anniversary or birthday ? We suggest getting him a handsome, handcrafted tie from FIGS in a wide variety of colors and styles. For every tie purchased, FIGS gives an entire school uniform to a child in need of an education through their Threads for Threads initiative. Why? Because in many countries in the developing world, a child can’t attend school without a proper uniform. FIGS partners globally with local weavers and tailors to make uniforms for their school communities.

We have a total crush on Adele's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Adele always seems to win big when she hits an award show, and at last week's Grammys, she took home a shiny trophy as per usual. But you know what I was really paying attention to? The singer's cute textured updo! I went straight to the source, celebrity hairstylist Michael Ashton, to get the scoop on how he created the look.

Get the look

Want to steal Adele's style? Ashton recommends following these steps and using all John Frieda products!

  1. Prep the look by applying Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray to wet hair before blow drying. The product helps build volume without stickiness!
  2. Using a medium sized round brush, blow dry hair and pay special attention to the ends to make sure they're bouncy.
  3. Next, set hair in hot rollers. Once locks are cool, carefully brush through with a natural bristle brush.
  4. Finish your look by twisting the back section into a chic French twist and pin away from the face. Set hair by misting with Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray to make sure your 'do stays in place all night long!

Colbie Caillat and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Colbie Caillat

Colbie Caillat

OK, OK, so Valentine's Day was last week, but I'm still in love with the color of love: red. In celebration of the most romantic of holidays, the stars, including Colbie Caillat, came out dressed in red to support heart health at the 10th annual Woman's Day Red Dress Awards in NYC last week.

In her typical style, the singer rocked a super feminine ensemble, sporting a one-shoulder red satin high-low dress. The silhouette, a huge trend the past few seasons, is growing on me the more and more I see of it. Instead of being business in the front, party in the back, the trend flips the switch! And don't we all love a fashion surprise?

The final verdict? I love Colbie's sideswept 'do, and think it goes oh so well with her over the shoulder dress. The singer looks easy, breezy and oh so pretty.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Va-va-voom! Geez, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, stop looking so amazing all the time already! The actress and model showed up to London Fashion Week working this red hot Burberry suit and I don't think anyone could've missed her for miles.

Nothing like a bright color to perk up your mood during the nasty cold months, eh? The hot hue of this suit isn't the only thing that I've fallen for, though. The slightly slouchy look to the pants and the neat silhouette of the blazer also rock.

The final verdict? I love the high and low aspects of this look. Fancy suit with a simple top, sexy shoes with casual waves. In fashion, contradiction works!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Brooklyn Decker and Jennifer Lopez

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Brooklyn Decker and Jennifer Lopez's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Brooklyn Decker at the Vanity Fair and Juicy Couture Celebration

Brooklyn Decker

Can someone please put a 5150 hold on Brooklyn Decker's dress? This schizophrenic look that Brooklyn wore to the Vanity Fair and Juicy Couture Celebration in Hollywood deserves to be committed. One dress should never try to combine four prints, particularly snakeskin, polka dots, stripes and neon.

The pattern binge on this Preen dress aside, it's also ill-fitting. The sleeves and hemline are an odd length, and a black belt would look better if worn on the smallest part of her waist. You'd think a supermodel would know better!

Finally, we know it's warmer in LA, but it is still February. Open-toed sandals and a white purse feel off season to us.

The final verdict? Brooklyn gets no points for her wardrobe, but her hair and makeup look very pretty, so at least there's that.

Jennifer Lopez at the TopShop opening in LA

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is another case of celebrities overdosing on prints. J. Lo usually has amazingly sexy style, but what was she thinking with this floral metallic patterned dress she wore to the Topshop grand opening party in LA? This look is far too frumpy for her!

The colorblocked collar and sleeves are too much on top of the floral print and checked accents on the dress. This 80s-esque frock does nothing for her famous killer curves and looks like something a housewife would wear, not a style icon!

Her leopard print, aqua trimmed platform shoes are the icing on this fugly cake. When wearing a super busy dress, stick to neutral shoes. And black tights should not be worn with open-toed shoes!

The final verdict? Please stick to your signature style, Jenny. If the 43-year-old mother of two is trying to show a more mature side, it probably doesn't help that her usual accessory is 25-year-old boyfriend Casper Smart, who accompanied her to this bash.
