Florence Welch's Grammy Awards makeup: All the details

Florence Welch looked like a dragon — in a good way — in her custom-made Givenchy gown at the 2013 Grammy Awards. Her makeup artist incorporated that aesthetic into her beauty look, too!

Florence Welch

Lisa Aharon had some help when coming up with Florence Welch's makeup look for the 2013 Grammy Awards. Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci already knew what he wanted on Welch's face to accentuate the gorgeous, jewel-toned gown.

"[He] had visions of a dark brown–toned lip with the dress. Florence wanted a sultry eye, so I tried to marry the two," Aharon said, adding that she used Laura Mercier makeup for the look.

Lips

The "rich brown lip" was Welch's favorite part of the look, according to Aharon. To create the look, she first added Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Merlot .

She then added Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Coffee Bean  "from the center of the lip outward, to avoid sharp lines and cool down the redness of the lip color."

Eyes

Welch really "wanted a sultry eye" for the Grammys, so Aharon added "a little golden metallic shadow to the inner corner of the eyes to mimic the shine" of the green gown. Aharon first added Laura Mercier Eye Canvas  to the "Shake It Out" singer's eyelids to create a smooth canvas and to "hold the shadow all night long."

Aharon then added Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Café au Lait around the eye and blended it outward.

She patted Laura Mercier Sateen Eye Colour in Cedar to the center of the lid below the crease to "create dimension." Then she added Laura Mercier Illuminating Eye Colour in Gilded Moonlight to the inner corners of both eyes to "open them up and make them pop."

Finally, she lined the singer's lash line with Laura Mercier Eye Pencil in Special Brown and added Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara in Black  to the singer's lashes.

The most surprising part? No falsies were used!

"Using this mascara is more than enough!" Aharon said.

Face

Welch has naturally glowing skin, so Aharon played that up by first cleansing the singer's skin with RéVive Tonique Préparatif .

Then she applied RéVive Intensité Crème Lustre  moisturizer to "combat dryness and provide radiance."Next, Aharon added RéVive Les Yeux Pressé under Welch's eyes to hydrate the delicate eye area because "it's not too creamy under makeup."

Immediately afterward, she highlighted the singer's face with Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Foundation in Porcelain Ivory , using a damp sponge. She added a few dabs of Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage  to hide any imperfections.

Finally, she contoured the red-headed beauty's cheekbones using the new Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Bronze-02 . She finished the look with Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight-01 to the top side of the cheekbones.

"I didn't use blush, so I wanted a little something extra on the face," Aharon said.

The result? A look as perfect as Welch's voice.

Tips for growing out your pixie cut

Growing out your hair can be frustrating, especially when it comes to pixie cuts. To make the process a bit less painful, we've got a few fun ideas for when you're between lengths.

Ginnifer Goodwin's sleek pixie

Don't forget the best resource of all

Say what? Learn how to communicate with your hairstylist.

Talk to your stylist! Your stylist can guide you through your growth, offering tips based on your unique hair type and texture. Because the ends of your hair will be framing your face, regular trims are important to keep any split ends in check.

Experiment with the right products

Count on products to help you keep your hair in check. Looking for a sleeker style like Ginnifer Goodwin’s? Smooth a straightening serum like Redken Glass through damp hair before blow drying. Flat iron the longest ends and use your fingertips to gently tease at the crown before finishing off with a volumizing hair spray. I love Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity Spray for just the right amount of va-va-voom.

Carey Mulligan's braided hair

Quick

tip

This easy trick
is ideal for those
trying to grow
out bangs
as well.

Neuma’s Style TexturizerAdd a braid or a twist

Braids and twists are easy ways to make your hair look fab on days when you’re short on time or energy . For a look like Carey Mulligan’s, towel dry hair and use a texturizing product like Neuma’s Style Texturizer throughout the damp hair. Beginning at your part, add a braid and pin behind your ear.

Experiment with makeup and jewelry

Though pixie gals are no stranger to using their haircut to play up their best features, be sure to take advantage of this as your hair grows. With your ears and neckline front and center, try a bold necklace or earrings. Also, experimenting with makeup is a great way to take attention away from your tresses on bad hair days — use it to boost your confidence!

Michelle William's headband

Accessorize

Best buys: Find the best accessories for bad hair days.

Headbands aren’t just for your daughter anymore — they're popping up on short-haired celebs like Emma Watson and Michelle Williams. A headband is an easy way to add polish and glam, making it the perfect accessory for feeling pretty.

Final words

Hair growth takes time and waiting can be so frustrating… especially when you’re over your cut and anxious for something new. Look on the bright side and remember that all of the waiting will be worth it! In the meantime, have fun experimenting with styling and accessorizing your growing hair.

Kristin Cavallari talks style

Kristin Cavallari talks about creating a new jewelry line, all while adjusting to being a new mom. We find out how this celebrity keeps up with the latest trends and even creates some of her own!

Kristin Cavallari necklace

Kristin Cavallari may be known for her infamous reality television career, but that's not all this starlet has to offer. The new mom has recently taken her talents to the fashion industry, partnering with Glamhouse founder Pascal Mouawad. Cavallari has created a collection exclusively for GlamBoutique.com that will launch this spring!

The collection represents Cavallari’s chic LA style and provides an affordable way for women to accessorize their everyday wardrobes. “I love the layered necklace that looks like three but is really one piece. You can wear it every day from day to night,” Cavallari says. This hip mom tells us that she also loves to stack and layer her jewelry to match her mood.

Even though she's on mommy duty for son Camden a lot of the time now, Cavallari still makes sure to keep up her trendy style and admires other celebrity mothers for their fab fashions, as well. Some of her celeb mommy style icons? Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss! At the end of the day, not much has changed for Cavallari in the fashion department since giving birth.

"I'm still me and I love the same stuff!"

“The only thing that has changed [about my style] is I’m wearing more flats. They are just easier carrying a baby and running around with him,” the new mom says.

Even Cavallari's beauty routine stayed pretty much the same when she was pregnant as it is now. One slight change? The star says she actually found her skin to be clearer than normal.

All in all, Cavallari is proof that you are able to still have great style all while being a mother. When we asked the hot mama if she's had to sacrifice her sense of style after having a baby, Cavallari said, "Not at all! I'm still me and love the same stuff!"

Q&A with BCBG designers

Designing duo Max and Lubov Azria are not only business partners in BCBG Max Azria and Herve Leger by Max Azria... they're also husband and wife!

We caught up with the power pair who brought us the famed bandage dress backstage during their New York Fashion Week shows to learn how they live, love and work together.

Every rule should be broken. That's how you create and innovate.

SheKnows: How is it working so closely with your significant other?

Lubov Azria: Max’s office is on the other side of the building, so we really just meet for lunch. In all seriousness, I think we have an immense level of respect for each other. Max is a visionary, and I’m detail-oriented. We’re each other’s support and love, and that’s why we make a great team.

SK: You and Max have six kids total! What's your favorite part of being a mom?

LA: Oh my gosh, getting all the love!

SK: What was your inspiration for the latest collection?

LA: The collection was inspired by my trip to Istanbul last September, and I love all the history and beauty inlaid in the walls in Istanbul. So I took a bunch of pictures, came back home and just started being inspired.

SK: You have two shows this week: BCBGMAXAZRIA and Herve Leger. How are you surviving Fashion Week?

LA: Drinking a lot of water, staying positive, meditating and keeping moisturized.

Herve Leger by Max Azria NYFW 2013

SK: Do you still get nervous before a show?

Max Azria: Always, like it's the first time. Definitely!

SK: What's been your proudest moment so far?

LA: So many, I can't just mention one! I think looking at my husband, when he used to walk out by himself and our team and the amazing work that they do. I think it's every time when I see all the looks lined up and all the 25 girls lined up, I just want to cry.

SK: How would you describe the style of your brand?

MA: Freedom, freedom, freedom! Freedom to wear what you want the way you want. The most important part for every piece of clothing is that they fit very well, and after that, it's about attitude and mixing the different textures, lines and style.

SK: When did you know you made it as a designer?

MA: When the customers buy my clothes. They're putting their money on the table so you have to be honest.

SK: What's one fashion rule that should be broken?

LA: Every rule should be broken. I think that's how you create and innovate.

SK: Why do you think so many places have copied the Herve Leger bandage dress?

MA: Because we are good!

Maybe she's born with it... or maybe even models have hair help! We were backstage at the Dannijo show to get glam tips and chat with Coco Rocha.

If seeing models looking flawless from head to toe makes you feel less than perfect, take note: It's not all natural. That's what we learned backstage at the Dannijo jewelry presentation for New York Fashion Week, where we spoke with mane man Johnny Stuntz, who confessed that all the girls in the show were sporting clip-in extensions in their chic chignons.

"Every one of the girls has extensions in their hair," he told SheKnows before the show as he put the finishing touches on the girls' tresses. "I put it in top knots and low buns to showcase the jewelry."

His weave of choice was LuxHair Wow for its versatility. "Even though this product is synthetic, you can use a straightening iron on it or curl it so it's super easy to use," Johnny explained. He finished off his looks with L'Oreal Elnett hairspray.

On the runway: BCBG>>

Dannijo's gems have been worn by Beyonce, Rihanna and Blake Lively, but their NYFW presentation was hosted by Rashida Jones. Supermodel guest Coco Rocha, who's also hosting Oxygen's The Face with Naomi Campbell and Karolina Kurkova, says Fashion Week is a chance to catch up with all her friends.

"I think sometimes it's like a high school reunion for me, especially with the models," she told SheKnows. "For example, Hilary Rhoda, I just saw. We don't get to see much of each other as models until it comes to Fashion Week, since most of our shoots consist of ourselves and not many other models so that's nice that we get to have a reunion every few months."

Coco says she loves Dannijo bling because it's beautiful yet affordable. "It's still accessible; you can still buy it," she told us. "It's not like 'Oh no, I could never afford that' and they're just so creative." You can shop the line yourself here!

Alice + Olivia

Designer Stacey Bendet premiered her beautiful fall collection for a who's who of young Hollywood Monday night.

Celebrities always come out for Alice + Olivia's NYFW presentations, and Monday night was no exception. Vanessa Hudgens, Victoria Justice, AnnaSophia Robb, Maggie Grace and many more all headed downtown to Highline Studios to see the eclectic fall collection, which had everything from motorcycle jackets to full length feathered and lacy gowns.

"The whole concept of the show is fantasy street style, so just kind of taking girls and having them dressed up and layered in really unexpected, sexy, romantic ways," designer Stacey Bendet explained to SheKnows.

Alice + Olivia's NYFW presentations

Vanessa, wearing a retro black and white poodle skirt from the line, praised the designer for her variety. "Her style is just so versatile," she told SheKnows of why she's such a fan. "You can dress up in an outfit and feel super chic and classy and dress up in another and feel like you're from the '50s. It's just so fun."

Vanessa made a beeline on the red carpet for AnnaSophia, who costars with her boyfriend Austin Butler in The Carrie Diaries, before heading inside to check out all the fashion and trends. The models all wore double braided hairstyles and some of them donned flowered headpieces as well. Their makeup was done by Stila Cosmetics and featured a gold eyeshadow and wine colored lipstick.

Alice + Olivia's NYFW presentations

If you love the look and want to recreate it yourself, here's how. "Take a gold shimmer eyeshadow and dampen your brush first and paint it on. That makes it stand out strong and sexy," explains Sarah Lucero, who did all of the makeup for the show, "My favorite tip to make a dark lip last is to use a lip brush to apply it and really embed the lip color."

Superstar design duo Mark Badgley and James Mischka sent glamorous and sparkly gowns down their FW13 runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Here are our favorite moments straight from the front row at Lincoln Center!

Badgley Mischka at NYFW 2013

What we saw

This season, Badgley Mischka did what they do best — sent stunning gown after stunning gown down the catwalk. Especially dramatic black floor-length stunners and gray dresses with pretty beaded accents. But the designers also showed wearable separates for the girl that isn't heading to a gala or a black tie event every night, including pretty floral skirts, metallic blouses and classic sweaters.

Our favorite piece

An absolutely gorgeous sparkly emerald gown. Not only is the dress beautiful, but when the light hits the glitter, it lights up the entire room! We have a feeling we'll be seeing this one on a super hot celeb at this year's Oscars!

What to buy this season

OK, so you can't actually purchase any of these pieces until fall, but if you're in the market for a Badgley Mischka wardrobe staple this spring, here are our favorite must-have pumps. The best part? They totally perform a double duty. Check out how we would style this for the office and the weekend.

For the office

Make a statement at work with these fabulous shoes, paired with a classic white blouse and black pants.

Badgley Mischka Humble IV Pump $245, A.L.C. Gillian Blouse $340, Ted Baker Timeless Tailored Trousers $90

Dressing the stars

Mark Badgley and James Mischka's gorgeous gowns have graced some of Hollywood's leading ladies including Taylor Swift, Helen Mirren and J. Lo. But they say they've got their sights set on Jennifer Lawrence!

We caught up with designing duo Badgley Mischka backstage before their New York Fashion Week fall runway presentation, where they said they still get nervous on show day.

"We do. We wake up and my stomach is always in knots," James told SheKnows Wednesday morning as models got dressed beside us. "When the girls are all lined up in their first looks and they're all here and their hair and makeup's done, then I can relax and enjoy. It's like putting on a wedding, we always say, twice a year. You work on it for six months and it's over in 10 minutes."

And there's no time to kick back and relax, since Oscars are this weekend. Badgley Mischka dresses some of the biggest names in Hollywood and many celebs request gowns straight from the runway last minute.

Badgley Mischka

"I think that the red one over there is going to get called in this afternoon," Mark explained, pointing to a beautiful burgundy beaded peplum gown. "I could see Kate Hudson in a lot of these dresses. We were fortunate enough to dress Jennifer Lopez for four years. She always calls in our gowns."

James said they'd love to see another Jennifer wear one of their gowns on the carpet. "Jennifer Lawrence, of course, would be good in anything. She's amazing," he shared. "That body type... she's like the modern day Charlize Theron. She just looks good in clothing," Mark added.

And while they love seeing Hollywood A-listers in their dresses, Badgley Mischka say their proudest moment is seeing everyday women wearing their designs. "Truly the most fun and gratifying [part] is when you see a woman you don't know who paid retail in one of our dresses and you can tell she's happy and you can tell she feels gorgeous, and that's kind of what it's all about," they tell SheKnows.

But their runway show certainly had no shortage of glamorous stars: Selita Ebanks, Petra Nemcova, Carmen Electra and Kelly Bensimon were all front row to see the the beautiful fall collection, which goes on pre-sale online this Friday.

Bling wallet

PortaPocket bling pocket

While not technically a wallet, this little device is strapped to your thigh, making it very practical and handy for a night on the town. It allows you to safely and discreetly store your belongings while dancing and dining, and no one will be the wiser.

7

smart wallet

SmartWallet

This clever little number helps users protect one of the most valuable items a modern working woman has on hand: a smartphone. Don't forego style for security! Grab one of these cute bags with locks to look great while keeping pickpockets at bay.

We love these totes and purses that work for travel, play and business. With their clever design and stylish appearance, a purse from this list will keep your items safe... and also keep you from looking like you're carrying a portable bunker.

Lock-a-Bye tote

No one will know you're carrying a secure tote bag when you throw the Lock-a-Bye over your shoulder. The bag's adorable patterns, pockets and details make it look like a purse for everyday use, but the Lock-a-Bye is theft-resistant in every way. It features slash-resistant material, a key-operated locking mechanism on the zipper and a cable sewn into the shoulder strap so you can attach it to a stationary object. In fact, you could leave the Lock-a-Bye secured to a stationary item and walk away from it with the key without worrying about the security of your possessions.

PacSafe citysafe bag

Pacsafe Citysafe 100 GII herringbone

Pacsafe is well known as a manufacturer of secure travel bags. The bag featured here is a nice update to more typical Pacsafe offerings because it looks like a purse rather than a travel bag fit for Bear Grylls. The Citysafe handbag features slash-resistant material, a locking hook on the strap, additional zipper security and RFID-blocking material to prevent hackers from obtaining your credit card or passport information through your bag.

Viewinbox Fashion Locks Clutch

Viewinbox Fashion Locks Clutch

This cute clutch from Viewinbox Fashion comes in at a lower price than the other bags mentioned here, in part because it does not have as many theft protections as the other picks. But if you're just in the market for a simple bag with a simple lock, this leather clutch is a striking finish to an ensemble. It comes in on-trend orange or mustard yellow.

Kyss bag rasberry pink

Kyss bag

The Kyss tote bag is similar to the items from Lock-a-Bye and Pacsafe in terms of security, but at a lower price point it may prove to be a slightly more accessible option for consumers. The bag itself locks and also has a strap that securely attaches to a stationary object. However, the Kyss bag definitely looks like a tote or travel bag rather than a purse. But as we all know, tote bags are perfectly appropriate for trips to the beach, so have fun knowing your items are secure.

Montecito small tote

Montecito small tote

We round out our list with this tote from Magellan's because it boasts a slash-proof design and clever locking options. If you just want to deter a thief without locking yourself out of your belongings, the bag's corners clip into a hook in the middle of the tote to prevent greedy hands from slipping in to pick your wallet. But if you want more security, a simple lock from Magellan's can hold the corners securely in place .

iB43 fashion headphones

The easiest way to block out the crying baby and Chatty Kathy seated next to you is to throw on a pair of headphones. Don't opt for the tiny, in-ear buds, though. Make it clear you want to tune in to personal entertainment with an oversized over-ear version, like the iB43 fashion headphones. With five different designer patterns to choose from, you'll look like you should be seated in first class, even if you could barely scrape together the fare for coach.

Clippa

Clipa handbag hanger

Whether you're heading to the airport or hitting the road for a road trip, chances are you're going to end up using a less-than-pristine bathroom. Don't let your purse or travel bag hit the floor! Hang it from practically anything with the Clipa handbag hanger — a hanger you can wear on your wrist as a bracelet or clip around your purse handle when not in use. The hanger carries up to 45 pounds and comes in a variety of colors and styles for prices ranging from $20 to $40.

Skip the hassle and speed through security like a pro by turning your iPad into a work-friendly "computer" with the Touchfire iPad keyboard. Simply secure the flexible keyboard directly to the front of your iPad for a tactile typing experience and when you're done, roll it up and pack it away.

Hudson+Bleecker Bombay Citrine travel accessories

The key to first class travel is a little bit of fashion, a little bit of confidence and a lot of double-duty products that cut down on the amount of luggage you have to carry. Hudson+Bleecker's line of travel accessories enable you to organize your cosmetics and jewelry with ease before heading out the door using one as a clutch or bag. There are lots of cute options to choose from, but we love the flashy style of the Bombay Citrine line. Each piece ranges in price from $46 to $86.

pan am passport covers

Unique Vintage Pan Am passport cover

Heading overseas? Ditch the boring passport cover and pick up an adorable vintage Pan Am cover for only $24. The exterior is a heavy-duty PVC that will stand up to years of high-flying use, while the interior will securely hold your ID, credit cards and, of course, your passport.

one love one heart blanket

Lyric Culture One Love double-sided blanket

Airplanes are frequently kept at chilly temperatures, but many airlines have stopped handing out small, scratchy blankets... unless you're willing to pay. Instead of forking out the cash on each trip, pack your own delightfully cozy, delightfully long blanket. We love the One Love micro mink blanket from Lyric Culture. At 60 inches long and 50 inches wide, it's large enough to share with a seatmate, and the graphic song lyrics give it a cool-girl vibe you won't get from the airline's generic coverlets.

T3 hair straightener

T3 SinglePass compact flat iron

If you're trying to smash all your full-sized beauty products into your carry-on bag, you're fighting a losing battle. Skip the big blow dryers and flat irons, opting instead for compact travel accessories. While the T3 SinglePass compact flat iron isn't the cheapest compact styling tool on the market, it wins major points for being affordable and smart. Heating to 410 degrees, it emits maximum levels of ions from its tourmaline plates, and, best of all, it has worldwide voltage, automatically adjusting to the power supply no matter where in the world you are!

anywhere comfort travel pillow

Anywhere Comfort travel neck pillow

Nothing says "amateur traveler" more than the inflatable neck pillows you snag from the airport gift shop before you board your red-eye flight. Think ahead and get your beauty sleep by purchasing an Anywhere Comfort travel neck pillow. Made from memory foam, this pillow conforms to your head, guaranteeing support and comfort; plus, it can be used in six different configurations. Just roll it up and hook it to your bag when you're done. What could be easier?

Scam alert!
Woman contemplating purchase online

Frugal fashionistas know the best place to shop for unique products at bargain-basement steals is online, but often those deals can seem too good to be true.

Outsmart phishers

Dig deep for a discount on that hot designer bag and odds are you'll find yourself on a sketchy website that sends off a major scam alert in your head. Get your deal and wear it too by shopping with financial safety in mind.

Certified secure checkout

We know you're an expert in adding things to your virtual cart, but when you finally go to check out, look in your URL bar. As you enter your credit card information, the beginning of the URL should say "https"— not simply "http." Hypertext transfer protocol, or http, is the language your web browser understands. Https adds a secure layer to the interaction between your browser and the website. For example, when you log into your online bank account, you'll see the same interaction in the URL bar because your computer is communicating strictly with the secure site. If the website you're shopping uses https, odds are it's legit, but not always.

reviewCheck the reviews

Reviews for online businesses are plastered all around the internet. If you're unsure of a site, simply type the name of the website into a search engine and add "reviews." For example, if you want to find reviews for Forever 21, type "Forever 21 reviews." Google, Yelp and more will pop up with user-submitted reviews, where you can read and gauge whether or not the deal is worth sacrificing your financial safety.

Unprofessional descriptions

If the description of your item looks like it was written by a texting 14-year-old boy, odds are your website isn't legit. For example, if you're looking to buy a pair of heels that's sold out elsewhere, the description might read something like, "Sold out evrywhere!! Get ur hands onit NOW!!" Legitimate professional websites work tirelessly to make sure their copy reads clean. Typos, excessive punctuation and shorthand might be indicators that the person behind the website wrote it hastily, hoping someone would overlook their errors in their determination to purchase a sought-after item.

Look out for SEO scams

Here's a scenario: You type the item you're looking for into Google. A website pops up claiming it has what you're looking for — and it's priced at a discount! You click the site and the same words you searched keep popping up. For example, if you searched "vintage Pucci dress," the site will read something like "Buy a vintage Pucci dress here! This 100 percent authentic vintage Pucci dress looks great. Get your vintage Pucci dress today!" These websites are SEO, or search engine optimization, scams. They get to the top of Google by repeating key phrases like "vintage Pucci dress" in their copy. They monetize their websites by adding ads to the side, hoping people searching for a unique item will click on their page and give those ads views. Odds are these sites never had a vintage Pucci dress. They might even know who or what Pucci is!

Woman shopping online

Online shopping safety

Buyer beware! Online shopping may be convenient, but it's not always the safest shopping choice. Are you doing everything you can to keep your private information safe when making internet purchases?

It's easy to just click away and make hasty decisions when you're shopping online, but it's important to be a little more aware of what you're doing.

You may be just sitting on your couch in your PJs, but you're sending very sensitive information into the world. Use these tips to make sure it doesn't get into the wrong hands.

1

Stick with what you know

There are a million choices when it comes to online shops, but it's best not to venture into the unknown on the web. Start your shopping at a site you know. Use online sites for major retail stores like Target, Kohl's, Home Depot and more. You can also safely shop at online-only sites we all know, like Amazon and Overstock.

2

Get other opinions

Before you make a purchase, search for reviews of the site from other shoppers. Find out if they felt safe once their transaction was complete, or if the process made them leery.

3

Look for certifications

Sites that have proven themselves to be trustworthy will be labeled with seals of approval from consumer protection groups. Look for logos from the Better Business Bureau and TRUSTe as a sign that you are shopping with a secure site.

4

Look for the lock

Never enter personal information on a website that isn't secure. Look for a lock symbol to appear on the status bar of your web browser and check that the URL of the site starts with https:// once you are on a checkout page.

5

Use online
payment services

Online payment services like PayPal and PaySimple store your information on their secure servers, so you never have to give your payment information to online retailers. They also watch your accounts closely for suspicious activity and cover the costs of fraudulent transactions.

6

There's an
app for that

If you're making a purchase from your mobile device, use the store's app instead of your device's browser. There aren't as many antiviral and antimalware protections in place on a phone, so using the app ensures you're dealing directly with the retailer.

7

Keep your computer safe

Never get online without making sure you have antivirus software installed and that it's up to date. Sometimes all it takes is one wrong click and a hacker or malware can have your computer in its clutches.

8

Secure your Wi-Fi

You may think keeping you're being a good neighbor by keeping your Wi-Fi wide open, but you're really leaving yourself wide open for a hack. Only make purchases on a secure server, and be wary of hot spots you're not accustomed to. Using the network at your local coffee shop is fine, but verify the name of the network to make sure you're not connecting to someone else's cleverly named look-alike.

9

Be smart
about passwords

You know the rules when it comes to passwords, but we bet you're not following them all. Use strong passwords that are a combination of numbers, letters and symbols. Don't use the same password on several sites — if you do, you're giving a hacker access to not one but many of your accounts.

10

Check your
accounts frequently

It's smart to give your bank statements a close look when they arrive once a month, but once a month alone won't cut it. Pull your accounts up at least once a week to check for suspicious charges. Check them more frequently if you've been doing a lot of online shopping.

Tip

Use credit over debit. Many credit cards offer fraud protection that some debit cards don't. Check with your bank to see what the best option is for you.

Fantastic plastic, secured

Who still needs cash, change and checks? We ladies like to keep it clean and sleek, so if those fantastic plastic credit cards are your payment of choice, you should have a wallet that reflects that.

The ID case

Hey, you know what else is sized like an ID? A certain little piece of plastic that's the key between you and that new pair of boots. The ID case is small enough to fit in a pocket and secure enough to ensure your cards don't fall out. Carry your ID, debit and credit cards with ease in this pretty striped Coach version . Your old wallet can keep the change.

Fossil tough wallet

The sturdy wallet

If you're a professional shopper, you need a wallet that can take a beating. Cheap wallets deteriorate over time, busting at the seams at inopportune moments. A sturdy leather or vegan leather wallet, like this timeless number can make its way out of a zippered purse time and time again completely unscathed. The price tag of these types of wallets might seem hefty up front, but if you purchase a classic style, it's bound to be your go-to credit keeper for years to come.

Kate spade ziptop wallet

The zip top

Open up this zip-top wallet by Kate Spade and you'll find dozens of places for credit cards, debit cards and IDs. While it still has a space for cash, the zip-top wallet stays streamlined and skinny, perfect for fitting in small and thin purses. Plus, this one is cute enough to carry on its own!

Michael korrs carry all wallet

The carryall clutch

Small enough to be demure but big enough to fit your lip gloss and mascara, the carryall clutch doesn't need to be shoved in a bag. It's a bag all on its own! Keep your plastic in the specialized slots, ensuring your credit cards are secure while you party the night away with this adorable quilted bag from Michael Kors.

Slide wallet

The slide wallet

You're not the kind of girl who needs her purse as a security blanket. You feel free enough to walk around empty handed. But hey, even freewheeling chicks need to carry money. The slide wallet is the perfect in-between option for girls who don't want to carry a purse, but don't want to carry a bulky men's wallet in their skinny jeans. This long, thin wallet can be worn on your wrist or placed in a pocket without adding extra padding to your pants. This turquoise version is the perfect compromise between fashion and function.

When you're working on the go, few things are more worrisome than the threat of having your laptop stolen or tampered with. Keep it safe and secure without sacrificing style.

Roll out

After a long day of traveling, the last thing you want to do is haul around a heavy laptop on your shoulder. This bright green rolling laptop bag lets you carry your laptop, work and other important traveling essentials with an option! Do you want to roll today? Or maybe it's more of a rock-it-on-your-shoulder kind of day. No matter which you decide, you'll always be prepared and secured with a subtle front lock.

Black laptop bag

The classic, on lockdown

Hey, jetsetter! This timeless black bag could match any outfit fabulously, but more importantly, it offers a padded laptop compartment to keep your computer damage free. Store files, media devices, pens and business cards in their own compartments, too. The lock on the outside is controlled by a separate key, so be sure to keep it on your key chain at all times.

red laptop bag

Big red

Carry your cell phone, laptop and other devices in this all-in-one laptop case that closely resembles a purse, and keep them all locked up. Heck, you could probably carry it on your off days, too! The stylish red oiled leather provides durability while that long handle allows you to attach the bag to other rolling luggage in a snap.

wayfair laptop bag

Back-top

Think back to your heavy backpacks in grade school. Although you were a mere 50 pounds back then, you managed to carry a ton of weight! "Packpacks" are back in style, and this ultra-chic leather version is a durable option for the traveler who needs to carry more than just a laptop. Turn locks offer extra protection while ultra-soft, perfectly worn leather provides a fashionable look for the bohemian babe at heart.

orange laptop bag

A punch of color

Hey, sunshine! Who says you can only have a laptop bag in black or brown to look professional? This orange structured bag skips the drab colors for borderline neon fun. Its box-style casing prevents the bag from tipping over and provides an extra side compartment for pens, paper, files and more.

No matter how good a purse looks, if it doesn't keep your belongings secure, you'll be back on the search for a new one.
Kisslock bag

5 Safe & stylish bags

No matter how good a purse looks, if it doesn't keep your belongings secure, you'll be back on the search for a new one.

The perfect secured bag needs to have a fastened closure and be designed to lie close to the body, but that doesn't mean it can't be fashionable as well. These five handbags have strong locks while adding a glamorous statement to your outfits. Who says a purse can't do it all?

The kisslock

It's cute, glossy and lady-like with an edgy twist. Anthropologie's Copper Age mini-satchel adds a serious coolness to any outfit, whether it's a flowing dress or a black leather jacket and jeans. The kisslock keeps your belongings safe and adds a refined detail to the shiny hue.

J crew edie

The twist lock

J.Crew's Edie purse is such an iconic style item that when paired with even the most laid-back clothes, it can transform any outfit into something a bit more sophisticated. Between the vintage-inspired twist lock and the front flap cover, it's a bag that will stay closed. The Edie also has an interior patch pocket and a zip pocket to keep things inside nice and organized. You can't go wrong with a handbag so polished and refined.

Vince caputo

Double duty

The Vince Camuto Julia is a must-have satchel. It's spacious, modern, comes in bright bold colors and can fit an iPad in the front pocket. When carrying around an iPad, security is a must. The Julia's zipper and magnetic closure will keep everything safe while you go on looking cool and effortless.

Michael Kors clutch

The clutch

There can't be anything much safer than the MICHAEL Michael Kors Berkley clutch. To ensure nothing will fall out, what's better than having your own hand keep guard? The clutch has two sets of snap closures on either side of the bag, but nothing is more reassuring than clutching it yourself.

Melie bianco tote

The shoulder bag

The Melie Bianco Iman tote is tough enough to carry a heavy load, have a secure closure and look sassy and stylish. Its zipper ensures safety because it closes way up at the top. If it comes loose, little is likely to fall out. To match its practicality, the two top flaps can extend outward or snap onto the front of the purse, allowing you to periodically change the bag’s style. Versatile, strong and spiked, this tote is a force to be reckoned with.

Big bag vs. small bag: Which is safer for your belongings?

Bigger isn't always better, especially where bags are concerned! Keep your stuff safe by finding a bag that's just the right size for you.
Woman shopping for a purse

Bigger isn't always better, especially where bags are concerned! Keep your stuff safe by finding a bag that's just the right size for you.

Size does matter!

Pack lighter

The bigger the bag, the more you're likely to cram in it. Not only is a big, heavy bag bad for your back, but it's bad for your belongings, too. If your bag is jam-packed full of stuff, there's a good chance all of that stuff will bang together during your travels, potentially damaging some of your items.

The weight from an overstuffed bag may also be damaging to some of the items on the bottom of your bag. Try going with a medium-sized bag, so you won't be tempted to overpack.

Digging deep

The bigger the bag, the deeper you dig when you're hunting for your keys, cell phone, iPod, whatever. When you do that, not only are you making a big mess in your bag, but you're knocking everything together. There's no way that's good for all the precious goods you're carrying.

Look for a smaller bag with divided sections to keep everything in its place.

Big bag, big target

If you carry a giant bag, you might as well walk around carrying a sign that says, "Look at me, I've got lots of stuff!" There's nothing wrong with catching attention, but sometimes it's better to be a little more discreet where your bag is concerned.

Snake-inspired accessories for the year of the snake>>

All your goods in one place

You've heard the saying about putting all of your eggs in one basket, right? It's never a good idea, and the same theory is true with your bag. If you've got your laptop, camera, phone, iPod, money, credit card, ID and every other expensive or precious item you own all in one place, then you risk losing it all at the same time, too. If that bag gets stolen or misplaced, you'll lose whatever is in it. Do you want that to be every precious item you've got? Get a smaller bag and carry only the things you really need.

5 Shortcuts to a gorgeous wardrobe>>

Exception to the rule

There are, of course, some occasions where a big bag is not only appropriate, but necessary. If you're going out and you really need to have several items with you , you may need to carry a larger bag on that trip. While there are some downsides to carrying a big bag, you're almost guaranteed to damage your belongings if you're cramming them into a bag that's too small.

Get a roomy bag with sturdy straps, and use it only when you really need it.

Your flight just landed, you grab your luggage from the baggage claim, you hit the airport restroom and... disaster. Yup, I’m talking to you and your weathered travel hair.
Woman in airport

Mobilize your mane

Your flight just landed, you grab your luggage from the baggage claim, you hit the airport restroom and... disaster. Yup, I’m talking to you and your weathered travel hair.

Listen up, ladies: Travel can wreak havoc on your beauty routine, but it doesn’t have to. With a little planning, patience and creativity, your tresses can be stress-free on vacay.

Getting past security

With TSA’s 3.4-ounce liquid rule, stashing your economy-sized shampoo in your carry-on is a big no-no. But unless your hotel offers top-of-the-line hair products tailored to your exact hair type and care routine, you probably want to stay away from the complimentary bottles in the bathroom.

If you’re against checking bags, ask your stylist for shampoo and conditioner samples of your favorite brands, or squeeze some out of your big bottles into miniature leak-proof plastic travel containers.

Frequent flier tip: The same can be said for equipment. If you don’t need a diffuser, the hotel blow dryer will get you by. Traveling in a pack? Designate who’s bringing a flat iron, a curling iron or whatever else you can share to save on packing space.

Pre-plan your ‘dos

You can’t bring your entire closet with you, and the same should be applied to your hair care supply. Before you go, plan out your hairstyles so you know which products and equipment to bring . You know you’d rather spend more time on the beach than in the hotel bathroom, so leave your set of hot rollers at home. They’ll miss you, but they’ll get by.

Frequent flier tip: Swap your bobbies for spin pins for better hold, especially in buns.

Perfect your ponytail skills

Sometimes bad hair days are just unavoidable, especially when you’re traveling to places with funky weather . Hit the tarmac with a few go-to updos, especially styles that work great in any situation.

Try a smooth pony on your work trip, pair a messy fishtail with your bikini and pin up a sexy top knot for your night out on the town.

Frequent flier tip: Throw an empty filtered water bottle into your suitcase and fill it up as soon as you land to start the rehydration process.

bottler of waterCancel out cocktail consumption

In addition to an increase in cocktail consumption, air travel has the tendency to dry you out, and this includes your hair. Increase your water intake to keep your locks hydrated and happy.

Chillax, you’re on vacay

Yes, you want your travel pics to turn out great , but you don’t want to spend the whole time stressed out about your hair. It’s also a great time to give your hair a break from the frequent heat treating you’re guilty of back home.

Let it air dry, try a braid — just have fun!

How to keep wild brows in check

$
0

We’ve all heard that your eyebrows frame your face. Polished and alluring, the perfect eyebrows can take any face from drab to fab. And really, is there anything worse than spotting stray brow hairs when you glance in your rearview mirror? We’ve all been there.

Woman having eyebrows waxed

Start with a professional shaping

To get your brows shaped initially, head to a professional. They know all the ins and outs of matching your brow shape to your hair type and face shape. There are two main types of professional shaping: waxing and threading. Both techniques are quick, precise and relatively inexpensive for a single visit.

But which is right for you?

1

Threading

This ancient Middle Eastern technique quickly gained popularity in the States and it's easy to see why. When brows are threaded, a cotton thread is tightly wrapped around the hair, and pulled to lift the follicle up from its root. Natural and target-specific, threading is often regarded as being less painful and irritating than waxing. The results of hair removal by threading also last slightly longer than waxing.

The downside: Finding a talented threading technician in your area can be a little tricky. Women with lighter brows sometimes find that threading doesn’t take care of their short, light hairs as well as waxing does.

2

Waxing

Widely available, this traditional hair removal technique can actually reduce hair growth over time. Waxing can be performed on any length of hair, removing even the shortest, lightest, hard-to-see hairs.

The downside: Pain and skin irritability are the two major downsides of waxing. If your skin is sensitive or acne-prone, check with your salon about using a sensitive skin wax — many salons offer a gentler option!

Maintaining at home

It is important to have a quality pair of tweezers, small brow scissors and a brow comb. When plucking at home in between professional shapings, proper lighting is your best tool. Late-morning, natural light is the brightest, allowing you to see stray hairs you may miss in your bathroom mirror. Avoid overtweezing by following the brow shape that was professionally outlined, sticking to tweezing stray hairs between and underneath the brows.

Does tweezing pain make you cringe? The best time to tweeze is after a hot shower or bath, when the steam has opened up your pores.

Super products

Keep a couple of brow-specific products in your makeup arsenal to help with brow grooming. Wax pencils, such as Givenchy’s Mister Eyebrow, are newer to the market and allow a more controlled, less goopy application.

Givenchy’s Mister Eyebrow

Overtweezed and without product? Try a matte eyeshadow similar to your hair color and a little bit of clear lip balm. Crisis averted!

Whether you maintain them yourself, have frequent professional shapings or a combination of the two, beautiful brows require serious attention. It takes just three to five weeks for a brow hair to fully regrow, meaning that, for some ladies, daily tweezing is a must!
