10 So-called winter beauty rules you don't have to follow

1. "Use heavy creams."

It's assumed heavier creams equal more protection in the winter, but may actually be counterproductive — especially if your skin is oily or combination. "The presence of sebum, oil and lipids that often accompany these skin types forms a protective barrier that's strong enough to resist environmental factors," says Dr. Roshini Raj, celebrity doctor and founder of TULA Skincare. The heavier the product, the more likely your pores will clog, leaving your skin susceptible to breakouts.

2. "Don't use cream, oil, or gel-based cleansers."

Alcohol-based are actually what you should avoid in the winter so your skin isn't stripped of its natural protective oils, says Raj, who recommends TULA's Purifying Cleanser instead: "It thoroughly removes makeup but it's not too harsh on the skin."

3. "You can go on a pedicure vacay."

Sure, your feet are going to be on lockdown until about April, but it's a good idea to continue your pedi routine to constantly exfoliate dead skin — and in the winter, prevent cracked heels. "That being said, it's always a good idea to give your nails a break from polish, so feel free to skip the lacquer," says Alexis Wolfer, beauty expert and author of The Recipe for Radiance.

4. "You don't need as much sunscreen in the winter."

I used to fall for this one back in the day, but wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 all year-round is a must. "The sun breaks down collagen and elastin in skin, leading to discoloration, lines and wrinkles," says Raj. "Even if you don't burn in the sun, your skin is still exposed to its damaging effects." What's worse, snow reflects UV rays, particularly the UVA rays responsible for aging skin. (Did I just hear "Psycho Strings?")

5. "Bronzer is only for the summer."

Au contraire! In the winter, bronzer is a great way to look like you still have a body temperature! The trick is to use a shimmery bronzer and to use it sparingly for a more natural look. Use a large, fluffy brush for the lightest application possible, and buff it across the areas that the sun naturally hits you: The bridge of your nose, cheekbones, decolletage — and don't forget the tops of your ears and the backs of your hands.

6. "Exfoliating will make your skin drier."

"During winter, your skin's natural protective barrier may be compromised as temperature extremes deprive the skin of moisture," says Raj. If your skin is flaky, dull and dry, amp up your hydration — but exfoliating is just as crucial. Raj recommends gently exfoliating once a week to speed up the shedding of dead skin cells and keep your skin glowing.

7. "Slather on lip balm."

Chapped lips are uber-annoying, and while it's important to keep your lips hydrated in the winter, using a Chapstick that contains menthol is counterproductive and will dry your lips again in a matter of minutes. Stick to lip butters and organic formulas that focus on sealing in moisture — and you know, not lighting your lips on fire.

8. "Ixnay the hot showers."

One of the best worst things about winter is taking a hot shower. They're the best because they feel sooo good when you're freezing your tuchus off, but they're the worst because they rob your skin of what little moisture it has left. Everything in moderation: Just make sure your shower's no longer than 10 minutes — any longer and you stand the chance of damaging your skin's protective layer. And always moisturize after the fact.

9. "Ditch waterproof makeup."

Waterproof formulas sound like they're a summer-only thing, but if you live in a particularly snow-globey part of the universe, waterproof makeup is the cheese to your macaroni. On super-windy days when your eyes well up, you'll be able to strut into work like you just came off a catwalk. Bam. Another super-handy trick: If you find your makeup's rubbing off on your coat collar or scarf, set it with a dash of translucent pressed powder.

10. "Go dark with your makeup."

Dark and stormy makeup colors aren't mandatory just because the temperature has dropped. Personally, I love wearing brighter shades to offset the dreary weather — it becomes a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. Choose lipstick shades in a sheer formula for that extra oomph.

7 Plus-size dresses that will wow at your holiday parties

Many of you are probably looking for something that's appropriate around the coworkers and works your curves at the same time, or maybe you're about finding a frock that gives you that touch of naughty and nice! Whatever style you fancy, there are lots of options. From brick-and-mortar stores to plenty to choose from online, it's just about taking the time to get that special look locked down. If you see something you like, act fast as many of the most amazing brands for plus-size clothing are online, so you'll have to get expedited shipping to get your styles stat! Some of the brands I mentioned below have storefronts or are available in department stores; there is no excuse, ladies; style has no size and no price.

I've done research for you and selected seven dresses perfect for your next soiree; here's hoping one of them strikes you and helps complete the look of your wondrous winter dreams.

First up is this polka-dotted piece from Fashion to Figure that is too cute to pass up! Add a cropped leather jacket or furry bolero to cover up and keep warm. Leather would also add a bit of edge to this girly look.

This is definitely the time of year to break out the sparkles. Lane Bryant has a party-ready dress that drapes in all the right places and offers just the right amount of bling. Shine on in this simple silhouette while looking classy and sophisticated at the same time. Keep it elegant with pearls and pumps for the office then add some sass with strappy sandals and a bright red lip. This dress is festive and charming while also supremely flattering. Who doesn't love a good A-line? I do!

If you're looking for something comfortable that looks like a million bucks, check out this flowy beauty from SWAK Designs. Perfect for the lady wanting to make an entrance in red or keep it low key in dramatic black, this dress is a staple you'll wear again.

Channel your inner '50s housewife and work that hourglass! Add a cardigan to this vintage-inspired plus-size dress from City Chic for a little modesty or dare to bare your arms and show a little skin. The lace detailing on this dress is lovely and just the right peekaboo for a holiday look.

Another personal fave this season is the Adelle Dress from IGIGI. IGIGI really specializes in plus-size fashion and cuts very consistently and true to plus-size standards. Opt for a more subdued look that is still cheerful with a printed chiffon overlay and add some colorful accessories for a bold pop of color!

ModCloth is definitely a brand you need to acquaint yourself with if you haven't already. With an inclusive range of sizes that runs the gamut and wonderfully whimsical style, there is always something adorable to bring home. I love this emerald color, and of course lace is all over the place this year, so it's perfect.

My last choice is from Adrianna Papell. I cannot get enough of this brand or recommend them more highly. If you're looking for something to invest in... this is it. Festive, fashion-forward and well made, these dresses are ones you'll turn to again and again. I love this cheerful print and flared skirt.

I hope my tips have helped and you've gotten a bit of holiday inspiration for the festivities ahead.

Happy Holidays!

DIY ultra-chic necklace made from common holiday decor

Supplies:

diy mini ornament necklace: Supplies

  • Clear mini ornaments
  • Tinsel garland
  • Scissors
  • Necklace chain, jump rings and clasp
  • Needle-nose pliers or other small pliers

Directions:

Step 1:

diy-mini-ornament-necklace-for-the-holidays: Step1 | Sheknows.com

Gently remove the top of the ornament, and cut a small piece of tinsel from your garland. If the fringes of your tinsel are very long, you can trim it down a bit (optional, depending on how "bunched up" you want the tinsel to look inside the ornament).

Step 2:

diy-mini-ornament-necklace-for-the-holidays: Step 2 | Sheknows.com

Pop the piece of tinsel into the ornament. It's helpful to use small pliers, or even a chopstick or pen, to push the tinsel all the way down and arrange it how you'd like.

Step 3:

diy-mini-ornament-necklace-for-the-holidays: Step 3 | Sheknows.com

Replace the top of the ornament, and thread a length of necklace chain through the hanger loop.

Step 4:

diy-mini-ornament-necklace-for-the-holidays: Step 4 | Sheknows.com

Attach the jump rings and clasp to the ends of the chain using the pliers. And that's it! Your mini ornament necklace is ready to shine.

If you don't have tinsel on hand, try filling your ornament with glitter, decorative snow or even a tiny model tree instead.

You can’t put black beauty in a box (PHOTOS)

Aside from the backhanded compliment, that statement was also loaded with racial prejudice and informed by a culture that promotes a very specific set of images of black women.

Abi Ishola, a multimedia journalist who also happens to have dark skin and natural hair, took this "less classically beautiful" tag as an opportunity to broaden conversations about perceptions of beauty about black women and within black culture. The result is a photo story featuring a diverse group of exceptionally beautiful black women who are all completely different and "beyond classically beautiful."

Ishola says she was inspired by the women who took to Twitter in defense of Viola Davis, all tweeting photos of themselves with the hashtag #LessClassicallyBeautiful as a show of solidarity. "I thought about how diversely beautiful black women are, I couldn't accept that label. From there, the idea for 'Beyond Classically Beautiful' was born."

Why we're obsessed

Why we're obsessed: Holland Rodden

There's a lot going on here — metallics, sheer fabric and luxe detailing — but the Teen Wolf star pulls it off beautifully without looking overdone. Her soft beauty look doesn't hurt either!

How to style the look

With such bold fabrics already ruling your outfit, now's not the time to take an accessory risk. Instead, stick with shoes and a bag that pull from your look's color palette to keep things looking elegant and effortless.

Adorable no-sew fashion DIY to make a cool poncho blouse

Supplies:

DIY adorable tie top: Supplies

  • 1 linear yard of non-fraying fabric at least 60 inches wide such as lightweight flannel or knit fabric. I used ponte knit.
  • Leather cording
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter
  • Chalk for marking
  • Ruler

Step 1

Cut fabric into a rectangle roughly 30 x 60 inches.

Step 2

DIY adorable tie top: Step 2 create neckline

Create the neckline by folding the fabric in half, "right" sides together, so that it forms a 30 x 30-inch square. Place the fold at the top of your work surface, and mark the midpoint of the folded edge.

Measure and mark 3.5 inches to the left and 3.5 inches to the right of that midpoint. Then measure and mark 7 inches down from the midpoint, and use your straight edge to connect all marks into a triangle, as shown above.

Step 3

DIY adorable tie top: Step 3 cut fabric

Unfold fabric and cut along the triangle chalk lines (through one layer of fabric only).

Step 4

DIY adorable tie top: Step 4 add ties

Add slits for the waist tie by folding fabric in half again as you did in Step 2 with the "right" sides together, and the folded edge positioned at the top of your work surface. Measure roughly 2 inches in from the left edge and 14.5 inches down from the top fold (see note below). Mark with chalk. Repeat on the other side.

Note: The location where the tie is threaded through will vary upon your height and should sit right at your natural waistline. The 14.5-inch measurement is based on a 5' 3" person.

Step 5

DIY adorable tie top: Step 5 cut slits

Create 1/2-inch slits with a rotary cutter through both layers of fabric. This is where the cording will thread through.

Step 6

DIY adorable tie top:

Thread cording through 1 slit from the back to the front (through both layers of fabric), and pull through slightly. Thread the other end of the cording through the other slit in the same manner. Tie at the front of the garment.

DIY adorable tie top: finished

And voilà — a quick, no-sew tie top from a yard of fabric!

Spakman, of Holland, creates looks that are both ethereal and mysterious. Some are terrifying; others are otherworldly. All are just amazing. See this terrifying carnival creation:

Carnival

Carnival

In keeping with the theme of the holidays and Christmas coming up, you could also try this beautiful gingerbread house look. I am not sure I'd wear it, but it's definitely quite striking. Too much?

Gingerbread

Gingerbread

This one is all about the birds and the bees (and the flowers and the trees). A bird house. In your hair. OMG! Would you ever? I love everything about this look. Who needs a necklace when you can have this:

Butterflies

Butterflies

There really are no words for this. The blood tears are scary, no doubt. But it's the mouth. The mouth will haunt my nightmares. How does someone even create something like this? I mean I can't even do my eyebrows! And she makes this true nightmare:

Scary Photo

Scary Photo

If you liked Alice in Wonderland, you will have mixed feelings on this take on the Queen of Hearts. She is a scary character, so it's kind of perfect. But this might be a little too much, right?

Alice Wonderland

Alice Wonderland

Love these looks or hate them, no one can deny the talent it takes to create them. Just walking down the makeup aisle is enough to give myself agita and most days I wear none at all. But these looks remind me that there is so much artistry involved in the application of makeup. Sure, it's a means to make us more "beautiful" on a day-to-day basis. But it can also transform us. It can create illusions and change everything about the way we look.

It's more powerful than we think.

You can find a mix of options here, from a chic blazer that can be worn with jeans or over an evening dress, a beautiful red wool cardigan that can dress up any look, to several options for dresses fit for any occasion! These looks are great for parties, or even work, and include key wardrobe staples that can be worn year round.

1. Rachel Roy gold lame body-con dress ($80 at Macys.com)

This dress has a festive look on it’s own, but it can be worn to the office with a pair of tights (there are so many great designs out there right now and I love that you can get festive and creative with tights too) and a blazer.

2. INC International Concepts plus size collar lace jacket ($90 at Macys.com)

The lace detailing on this plus-size blazer is gorgeous. It has the sophisticated look of a traditional blazer, but the lace adds that extra edge for the fashionista in all of us.

You can wear this blazer so many different ways; with jeans and a pair of cute heels, or over a dress!

3. Rachel Roy long-sleeve cutout marble-print dress ($100 at Macys.com)

I love making a bold statement with a patterned dress. The allover marble-inspired print of this dress is edgy, but still pretty. The long sleeves make it great for chilly days.

4. JM Collection three-quarter sleeve wool cardigan ($45 at Macys.com)

I seriously like everything about this cardigan! It comes in a bunch of different fun and bright colors (yellow, blue, and so many others) and has a beautiful beaded detail at the neck line. You can wear it with slacks to dress up your look or over a dress or skirt.

5. Rachel Roy metallic flecked tulip back sweater ($80 at Macys.com)

The best thing about this sweater is that you can wear it to dress up a pair of jeans. It's perfect for day to evening wear. You can't tell from the photo, but it’s also very sparkly and festive

6. Vince Camuto graphic print halter maxi dress ($125 at Macys.com)

Maxi dresses are so versatile. With the right accessories and hair style, you can wear this to a formal event like a wedding, but it can also be dressed down for casual events like a summer BBQ. Throw on a black or red blazer for those chilly nights!

7. Rachel Roy fitted sheath colorblocked dress ($30 at Macys.com)

This is another great piece that can be dressed up for nighttime or worn with sandals for a more casual look.

8. Ethnic print sequinned dress ($129 at Zara.com)

This is the perfect dress for date night or any festive occasion. You can wear it with stylish pumps or even with tights and booties!

9. Sequinned dress ($99 at Zara.com)

This is another gorgeous dress for holiday parties. I love the pattern and the long sleeves make it great for winter. Add some tights and a coat or blazer for nighttime.

10. Illusion Yoke crepe sheath dress ($148 at Nordstrom.com)

The sheath top of this dress is so classy, and the sweetheart top makes it fun!

11. Drape front metallic cami ($52 at Topshop.com)

This pretty pearl-colored cami is perfect for New Year's Eve celebrations. Add a blazer and skinny pant for a sophisticated, but fun look.

12. Satin tuxe blazer ($110 at Topshop.com)

Speaking of blazers! A great blazer is one of the most essential wardrobe staples and can be worn so many different ways. I loved this white option from Topshop because the satin detail adds a dressier touch for the evening, but can still be worn during the day over jeans or a casual dress.

13. Cold shoulder jersey dress ($136 at DKNY.com)

Who said coral is only for summer? I think it's one of those colors you can rock year round. The cutouts on this piece give it a cool, edgy feel.

14. Asymmetrical sleeveless dress ($97 at DKNY)

The asymmetrical cut of this dress makes it so trendy. Dress it up with a statement necklace and great pair of heels.

The best way to remove glitter nail polish

$

If you're anything like me this New Year's Eve (or really, any day that ends in "y"), you will take a trip to Glitter Town and admire your twinkly fingertips with each tick of the clock. Why? Because... You. Love. Glitter. That is, until it's time to remove your polish. Then... You. Hate. Glitter.

We've all been there. It practically takes a sandblaster, a bucket of acid and a chisel to get the glitter off. There must be a better way to bid adieu to a manicure that brings so much joy. So, I tried five different methods to remove glitter nail polish.

You're welcome.

Method 1: Plain old nail polish remover jar

Pictured: Cutex Regular Twist & Scrub Sponge Acetone Nail Polish Remover for Natural Nails, Nails Inc. Pop Art 2 in 1 in Sloane Street and Knightsbridge, Essie in On a Silver Platter and No More Film.

Cost: $3.99

Pro: You probably have regular nail polish remover at home

Con: It doesn't really work

The verdict: We all know how this story ends. You shred 17 cotton balls before getting your nails clean. And even then, you find a glitter barnacle that just won't let go.

Method 2: Popular Pinterest hack, remover-soaked cotton balls affixed with tin foil

Pictured: CVS Nourishing Nail Polish Remover with cotton balls and Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil, Wet & Wild Megalast in Sugar Coat and Wet & Wild Fergie in Walk of Fame, Milani Nail Lacquer in Gems and Pool Party.

Cost: $2.49 (remover), $1.99 (cotton balls), $2.99 (foil) = $7.47 total

Pro: Soaking your nails in polish works better than scrubbing

Cons: It's time-consuming and you look like a science experiment

The verdict: I don't want to work this hard. By the time you go to the kitchen, dig out the foil, cut it into 10 squares, soak 10 cotton balls in remover, wait 5 minutes for it to work, remove all the foil, and clean up the edges with more remover, you could have just used Method #1.

Method 3: Another popular Pinterest hack, using an Elmer's glue-like base coat

Pictured: OPI Glitter Off Natural Base Coat, Sally Hansen Gem Crush Nail Color in Cha-Ching!, Julep Nail Color in Barbara and Bette.

Cost: $9

Pro: Easy to apply

Con: Easy to peel off (this is a bad thing, trust me)

The verdict: Whether you use a home-made concoction of Elmer's Glue and water, or you pony up $9 for OPI's version, this method goes to the opposite extreme. You can't keep the polish on! Your nails will start to peel quickly, so only use this if you don't want your manicure to last the weekend -- or the night.

Method 4: A fancy upgrade from Julep on the Tin Foil Method

Pictured: Julep's Party's Over Glitter Nail Polish Removal Kit, Ciate Paint Pots in Serendipity, Butter London 3 Free Nail Lacquer in Scallywag.

Cost: $28

Pros: Terrific name, far easier, and less goofy-looking than the Tin Foil Method

Con: Expensive ($28!)

The verdict: I will definitely use all the packets that came with the kit (at this price, I'd be a fool not to), but it’s unlikely that I’ll reorder the little remover pads. And those little black finger booties are too snug to fit a cotton ball. So... that’s a no.

Method 5: A fancy upgrade from Sephora on the jar method

Pictured: Sephora Instant Nail Polish Remover for Glitter (and Nail Patches, Nail Tattoos, Pens... ), Sephora Formula X Effects Nail Color in Sparklebomb and OPI Liquid Sand Nail Lacquer in What Wizardry Is This?

Cost: $9.50

Pros: It smells great and it worked!

Con: I wish the jar was bigger so it would last longer

The verdict: Ladies, I think this is the one. Compared to the other methods, removal was pretty instant, and they included a scrubby brush inside for any stubborn sparkles. Did I mention it smelled good? Worth a trip to Sephora.

Ding-ding-ding, it looks like we have a winner! Whatever method you choose, just remember this: Life is short, wear the glitter.

Last week I had the pleasure of chatting with Jeannine Morris, SheKnows Beauty Expert and the creator of Beauty Sweet Spot. In addition to talking holiday looks and makeup tricks for the party season, one of the best things I learned was that how you take off your makeup at the end of the night is just as important as how you put it on!

But before we take it all off, I'm going to tell you exactly how to create Jeannine's fun and festive holiday look. Here are a few easy steps she shared with me.

It's all about the base

Starting with a good foundation is super important if you want your look to last throughout the night. Check out Smart Shade(TM) skin tone matching foundation from Almay. It has a shade-sensing bead technology that adjusts automatically to your skin tone for a perfect match. It's pretty awesome!

Super simple smoky eye

Especially for the holidays, a bold, smoky eye is the perfect touch to glam up your look. Choosing a color palette that brings out your natural eye color is key. Jeannine is wearing Almay's intense i-color smoky-i(TM) kit for hazel eyes. The kit makes it easy to create a smoky eye, even if you're not a makeup pro. Just sweep the top shade along brow bone. Then, apply the bottom shade from lash line to crease. Blend the middle shade into the crease. Finish the look with Almay's intense i-color(TM) liquid eyeliner and intense i-color(TM) volumizing mascara in midnight for hazel eyes. And don't worry about mistakes! Just grab one of Almay's Makeup Eraser Sticks to easily clean up around the eyes.

Think beyond the little black dress

A little black dress is a great staple piece to have in your wardrobe, but for the holidays Jeannine recommends mixing it up a bit. Go for less-expected colors and textures to set yourself apart from the crowd. This season, there are so many great lace options. Here's a great option to rent or one to own. Finish the look by adding a great statement necklace. You can find them everywhere this season, but we love these ones from BaubleBar.

So now that you know how to get the look, check out this great how-to video where Jeannine explains the best ways to take it all off!

Happy holidays!

How to make lipstick out of crayons (PHOTOS)

First, round up your crayons. If you're a mom, you might have crayons up the yin yang, but if you're like me, you might totally relish the opportunity to hit up the children's art supply aisle. I bought two sets called Neon Dreams and Pink Princess. I mean, with the names alone, how could I resist? The crayon colors looked like lip colors I'd like to wear, with names like Shocking Pink and Hot Magenta.

What you'll need:

DIY Crayon lipstick: Supplies | Sheknows.com

  • 1-3 crayons
  • Heat source (I used a candle but you can use a microwave or double boiler too!)
  • Large metal spoon or ladle
  • Empty container or lipstick tube
  • Coconut oil
  • Stirring stick (a toothpick or fork works well)

Directions:

1. We need to get our crayons in their birthday suits!

Unwrap the crayons you want to use. I chose crayons whose colors already looked like wearable lip colors on their own.

2. Next, break each crayon into about 3 pieces. This will help them to melt faster.

DIY Crayon lipstick: Step 2 | Sheknows.com

3. Place the pieces in a large metal spoon or ladle and hold about 1 inch above your lit candle.

DIY Crayon lipstick: Step 3 | Sheknows.com

Be patient and enjoy the strange pleasure in watching your crayons melt. Am I weird or is this kind of fun?

4. Add coconut oil

When your crayons are good and melty, transfer to a small bowl and immediately stir in 2 teaspoons of coconut oil. If you wait too long and the mixture begins to harden, don't be afraid to pop that baby into the microwave for 45 seconds.

DIY Crayon lipstick: Step 4 | Sheknows.com

5. Add lipstick mixture into your container of choice

Pour your mixture into a small container, like a clean contact case or sample jar from Sephora, or an empty Chapstick or lipstick tube. If using a lipstick tube, just remember to twist all the way down before filling.

DIY Crayon lipstick: Step 5 | Sheknows.com

6. Now let your lip color harden for an hour or so. You can place in the freezer to speed things up.

7. Your DIY lip color is now ready to apply!

Bonus tips to get creative!

Don't be afraid to melt some avant garde colors like periwinkle purple or fluorescent orange together. The beauty of crayons is that they come in amazing colors that you don't find in traditional lipsticks!

DIY Crayon lipstick: Bonus | Sheknows.com

A deep burgundy can deepen a pink shade or a peach can tone down a too-bright pink.

DIY Crayon lipstick: Bonus 2 | Sheknows.com

If you're worried this isn't safe, know that Crayola crayons are non-toxic. Children can, and do, eat crayons and aside from a bad stomachache and some digestive issues, no serious harm is done. You're good, girl.

Now have fun because that's what this project is all about.

8 Hairstyle hacks for a gorgeous New Year's Eve look

But who has the time or money to get a fancy new 'do at the salon? Here are eight super cool, super easy hairstyling hacks to make yours look fantastic for the festivities.

1. Shampoo, condition and dry only the front of your hair

A smart way to shorten your hairstyling routine but still freshen it up is to wash and condition only the front sections or bangs in the sink. Blow it dry and style as usual — it will look shiny and squeaky clean, and no one will ever know.

2. Baby powder and a toothbrush are your secret weapons

Another clever trick to make your hair look and smell amazing, especially if you don't have time to shampoo the whole thing, is to sprinkle some baby powder on your hands and run it through your locks at the roots, along your jawline and underneath. It will soak up the oil and give you a just-washed look. To tame static — which runs rampant at this time of year — just spritz some hairspray on a toothbrush and brush those fly-aways away. Magic!

3. Put your hair in a high, bouncy ponytail with a sleek clasp

A sturdy, round clip for your ponytail like this one gives it extra bounce and volume and keeps the whole thing in place while you're dancing the night away. (Nordstrom, $18)

4. Glam up your messy bun with a braided wrap

This messy bun with a braid holding it all together looks elegant but is easy to do. Check out the hair tutorial and try it on yourself this New Year's Eve.

5. Accessorize with a fun, glitzy headband

What better way to dress up your hairstyle than with a sparkly headband? It's a simple trick for a look that's flattering on just about everyone. (Nordstrom, $28)

6. Curl your hair with a flat iron

This is a great hairstyling hack and an effortless way to get two uses out of just one popular tool: your trusty flat iron. Follow the tutorial for sleek, beautiful waves and be happy that you can straighten and curl your hair in one shot.

7. Tease the crown of your hair for extra volume

Do this whether you're wearing it up or down. Pull a section of your hair straight up in the air, and tease it with a comb or brush, going in the opposite direction you normally would. Then place it back where you want it and smooth it out. Voilà! Your hair looks fuller instantly.

8. Try an easy half-updo for an elegant but natural look

Check out this tutorial for a beautiful half-updo style that looks a lot harder than it actually is to pull off. It could be the perfect way to wear your hair to ring in the New Year.

10 Things only Latina girls understand about beauty

1. You don't leave the house without a manicure.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 1

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 1

My mami taught me that I would have to be loca (aka crazy) to leave the house without properly painted nails. A weekly manicure is a requirement, not an option. Whether I do them myself or go to a salon, this is an important rule of beauty.

2. Frizzy hair products are a must.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 2

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 2

No matter what your hair type, frizzy hair doesn't look good on anyone. Did you know that a Latina actually invented anti-frizz products? Well, it's no wonder! I don't go anywhere without first putting a dab of John Frieda Frizz Ease in my hair.

3. A little (or a lot) of perfume goes a long way.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 3

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 3

I'm not the biggest fan of perfume and there are days I forget, but you wouldn't know it based on the multitude of bottles I have displayed on my vanity table. Whether it's to the office or out on a date, smelling good is essential.

4. If you don’t have time, add a red lip.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 4

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 4

This one comes straight from my abuelita: if you're running out of the door because you're late (for the seven thousandth time), simply grab a bright red lipstick and you're good to go. I keep one in my bag and at least two in the office at all times.

5. Get a weekly facial steam for cleaner pores.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 5

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 5

Want better pores? Once a week, bring water to a boil, pour it in a bowl and then place your face over it for a steam. I leave my face over the water for about five minutes, then wash it with a cleanser and go about my usual morning facial routine.

6. Bright colors any season? Yes, please!

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 6

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 6

Just like with our clothes, bright colors in our makeup are appropriate any season. Just because it's winter doesn't mean I can't rock a bright pink dress or a lavender eyeshadow. Oh that sparkly teal I have on in February? Just another day.

7. Cocoa butter works wonders after the beach.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 7

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 7

Soft, smooth skin goes a long way and there is never a better time to moisturize than after a full day in the sun. After showers is great, too, but there's never a better time to break out that cocoa butter (or your body moisturizer of choice) than after the beach.

8. Trim hair once a month at the full moon.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 8

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 8

This might be a bit of an old wives tale, but I believe that trimming my hair on the full moon will help it grow longer and faster. Plus, trimming once a month keeps it healthy, shiny and free of split ends. And don't we all deathly fear split ends?

9. When in doubt, do a cat eye.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 9

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 9

If it's time for a night out and you're lost as to what kind of makeup you should do, go with the cat eye. Always go with the cat eye. Cat eye forever! It might take a little longer in the morning, but you can't go wrong with this look. Ever.

10. Moisturize hands and soles of feet with mayo and sugar.

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 10

Things only Latina girls know about beauty 10

When my hands and feet get super dry (especially in the winter), I like to moisturize with a mixture of mayo and sugar. Why? The mayo provides some fat that easily absorbs and the sugar is great for exfoliating away dead skin. Trust me on this one!

Step 1

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 1

I'm going to use my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette for this look. I'm using the color "Tease" on a crease brush and sweeping this into the crease first.

Step 2

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 2

Now, dipping into "Verve" with a flat shader brush, press the color all over your lid.

Step 3

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 3

Using a smudge brush, place "Busted" at the outer corner only.

Step 4

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 4

Now grab a blending brush and soften that out, bringing it into the crease ever so slightly.

Step 5

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 5

Using that same smudge brush, dip into "Busted" a little bit and drag along the lower lash line.

Step 6

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 6

Place the color "Bootycall" on the top of the brow bone only to highlight.

Step 7

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 7

Line the inner rim of your lower lashes with a soft black kohl liner.

Step 8

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 8

Using a black gel liner, line the top lash line with an angled brush. Create a wing at the outer edge.

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 8

Step 9

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 9

Using that same angled brush and black gel liner, extend your line past the inner corner of your eye.

Step 10

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 10

Coat lower and upper lashes with mascara.

Step 11

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 11

Using a silver glitter eyeliner, place a line of silver glitter below your inner corner gel liner. You will want to let it dry and go over several times to achieve the level of glitter you want.

Step 12

A glitter eye makeup tutorial: Step 12

Draw a thin line of silver glitter liner under the wing you created. Let it dry and layer until you have a bright and sparkling line.

Optional: If you want to really up the ante, apply individual lashes or strip lashes.

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 1

Start by sketching an eye pencil like Sephora Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof in Black across the top lash line. Fill in about half of your lid.

Step 2

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 2

Next, take an espresso-colored pencil like NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Dark Brown, filling the rest of the lid up to the crease.

Step 3

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 3

Use your finger to blend the two colors together, creating a soft gradient.

Step 4

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 4

Line the waterline with the black pencil. This will add instant drama.

Step 5

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 5

Using the dark brown pencil, apply a small amount to the lower lash line.

Step 6

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 6

Smudge the liner with your finger to soften it out.

Step 7

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 7

Dip your ring finger into a loose, gold pigment like bareMinerals Eyecolor in Good Fortune. Press onto the center of your lid only. Build in layers. When your eye is open, this will highlight the iris.

Step 8

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 8

Now take more of the same gold pigment on your pinky finger and press onto the center of the lower lid. Take the excess and press onto the inner corners of your eyes.

Step 9

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 9

Apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

Step 10

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 10

Get those brows into shape by quickly running a tinted brow gel like Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel in Granite through them. Or, here's how to make your own brow pomade for cheaper.

Step 11

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 11

Red can be a little too expected so try a party pink instead! Givenchy’s Le Rouge Lipstick in Rose Dressing is one of my favorites because it’s a coral pink, without being coming across too neon.

Step 12

Fast and Festive Holiday Look: Step 12

Press a golden gloss onto the center of the lip only. I used Borghese Eclissare Color Eclipse ColorGlass Lip Gloss in Gilt.
