Color crash course: 5 Colors we're falling for this fall

$
0
0
With a new season comes a new color palette, and while summer saw pretty pastels and neon brights, fall is all about rich, sophisticated hues perfect for cooler weather.

Burnt orange skirt

Burnt orange

Tangerine may have owned the spotlight in spring and summer, but a darker, more elegant orange is moving in for fall. We spied rich orange hues on several fall runways, including Rodarte and Proenza Schouler. The fall-ready hue pairs well with black, but looks equally chic with white, blue and charcoal.

Wear it: We can’t get enough of this bold orange 3.1 Phillip Lim pencil skirt sure to give your office wardrobe a seasonal boost .

Royal blue jacket

Royal blue

We were pleased to see this classic hue make a comeback for fall . Royal blue is versatile, eye-catching and gives neutrals a boost when worn as an accent.

Wear it: Bring on the blue with this vibrant tailored jacket with playful polka dot cuffs .

Deep red twill pants

Deep red

While it never truly goes out of style, some seasons see more red than others. This fall, red is getting another turn in the style spotlight and we couldn’t be happier. It’s dramatic, elegant and definitely gets noticed. Whether you wear it on your lips, your nails or throughout your fall wardrobe, red is here to stay for the season.

Wear it: Paint the town red in a pair of expertly tailored stretch wool-twill pants . Add your favorite fitted T-shirt and a leather jacket to round out the look.

Yellow tank

Yellow

Move over neon! This season’s yellow is deeper and more sophisticated. We saw some gorgeous pieces in primrose yellow come down the runway at Oscar de la Renta and Chloe, and the hue has us pretty excited for the cooler temperatures to move in. This mustard-tinged or turmeric yellow pairs easily with most colors, in particular royal blue, cream and even some pastels.

Wear it: We suggest wearing this silk blend tank in a rich marigold yellow under a tailored jacket .

Purple

We noticed several collections that showed a penchant for purple. This season the hue is eggplant-inspired and an ideal match for softer neutrals, basic black, gray and yellow.

Wear it: Why not inject your footwear collection with a dose of deep purple? We love this pair of stylishly structured John Fluevog riding boots in one of this season’s hottest hues .

Summer to fall fashion

For a number of reasons, early September is my favorite time of year. The temperature is just right and the touch of crispness in the air is a reminder that the season is turning. With that comes the changing of the seasonal wardrobe – which can be cause for anticipation and excitement… or not!

For many of us, the idea of a wardrobe changeover is a rather daunting and dreaded task; however, it need not be. Labor Day does mark the end of summer whites and brightly hued fabrics. But beyond that, the wardrobe switch does not have to happen overnight. Just as the seasons transition over time, so can our wardrobe.

How, you ask? Well, between now and Oct. 1, gradually introduce more of those lovely autumnal earth tones and bold colors, while still dressing appropriately for the weather. Make Oct. 1 your goal date for completing the transition in your closet, and follow these simple tips to help you through the process!

Designate a time and a friend

Set up a time frame and give yourself a schedule. A day, an afternoon, a weekend. Whatever it is, make it realistic. Choose a friend who will give you honest feedback and can make the time commitment. In turn, you can help her with her wardrobe. It is more fun and productive when you have a friend who will keep you company and on track.

Divide and conquer

Keep it simple. Pull everything out of your closet and divide up your belongings by fabric, color and style.

Fabrics

Put away: All strictly summer weight materials

Weaves worth keeping: Cashmere, boucle, woolens, heavier knits, fleece, silk, cotton, denim and leather

Colors and prints

Put away: Shades that scream “summer” like pastels, neon, tropical or floral prints, bright whites, and any prints or colors that obviously have a summer shelf life

Classic colors and patterns stay current: Jewel tones, neutrals,  warm autumnal shades, mustard, oranges, red and burgundy, plum and eggplant purples, teal, navy, black, cream, brown, camel, tartan plaids, stripes, tweeds, etc.

Style

Put away: Summer dresses, rompers, shorts, cropped or capri pants, strapless or backless tops, sandals, espadrilles and open toe shoes, rattan fabric belts, shoes and handbags

Still in season and in style: Jeans, trousers, knit dresses, blazers, cardigans, long skirts and pretty tanks tops, tees, items you can layer, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, lace and feminine details, leather accessories

Damage control

Twice a year, I like to send things out for a final cleaning and repair. Do this right before you pack things up for storage.

Love the drycleaner

Defuzz your knits and clean your garments to avoid the setting of stains. Have your cleaners box your items and wrap them in tissue as opposed to hanging things on wire. Storing things flat means items will keep their shape and help prevent wrinkles. Place moth-repellent sachets to protect the stored items and just like that, your clothes will be ready for next season!

Document

If you really want to keep things organized, an easy trick is to take a quick photo of what is being boxed. Tape the snapshot to the outside of the box or suitcase. This helps you in locating things for that impromptu winter getaway to a warmer climate, not to mention making that switch back to a summer wardrobe an absolute breeze!

Shoes, shoes, shoes!

I think it's safe to say that every woman has somewhat of a weakness for shoes. So brace yourself, dolls, because I'm chatting everything shoes with David Giordano, Creative Director of Pour La Victoire, today. From the brand's latest collection to the top shoe essentials every woman needs, David's dishing his top tips. You can thank me later!

SheKnows: How would you describe the Pour La Victoire brand and its designs?

David Giordano: Pour La Victoire is a Parisian-inspired brand and our designs capture the confidence, passion and sensuality that French women are known and celebrated for.

SheKnows: Designers find inspiration in many areas of life. So tell us: What inspires you to design these gorgeous shoes?

Giordano: As the Creative Director, I am always looking to ensure the designs we create and the partnerships we embark on exemplify our overall vision. The people we collaborate with, such as Terry Richardson and Dennis Basso, share our appreciation and values of a poised, sexy woman empowered by her inner confidence expressed through signature accessories like a fantastic pair of shoes or a show stopping handbag. At Pour La Victoire, we believe these choices are extensions of her inner strength and power, and we are inspired by it every day.

Basso

SheKnows: So tell us about your new ad campaign. We hear Terry Richardson shot it, so we know it must be amazing!

Giordano: Our new ad campaign shot by Terry Richardson is absolutely stunning and you can see it all in a behind the scenes video directed by Terry himself. Like our spring 2013 collection, model Jessica Hart exudes sensuality and confidence and there was no one better than Terry to capture that for our first campaign.

SheKnows: We're coming off of a hectic Fashion Week and are so excited to check out your new collaboration with Basso. So tell us what inspired the collection and what happened at the show.

Giordano: Dennis Basso’s Ready-To-Wear Spring 2013 collection presentation was fashioned after a glamorous evening in Deauville, France during the 1960s. It was so natural for Pour La Victoire to work with him and match our perfect pumps in gorgeous colors for his exquisite gowns. Together, I think we captured some of that je ne sais quoi that French women are celebrated for.

SheKnows: Fall is almost here, so what are some of your favorite shoe trends for the season ahead?

Giordano: I think fall will bring a lot of vintage flirtatiousness. There will be interesting lines paired with unexpected colors, such as emerald and camel print. We’ll see unique textures complementing classic shapes.

SheKnows: Speaking of trends, a lot of women are often confused about how to accessorize the latest fashion trends. So what type of shoe would you pair with some of the hot fall trends?

Giordano: We have a shoe for every occasion but a few that are great for current trends would be the Ravel wedge bootie in emerald. It’s the perfect bootie for cuffed denim and adds an extra pop of flair with the very on-trend color. For a heel, I am loving the Aeesha that is both feminine and strong and can easily take you from the office to your night out.

Emmy

Sierra

Aeesha

SheKnows: Quality shoes are a well-spent investment, but most women can't afford to buy tons of them. So keeping budget in mind: What are the top three to four shoes a woman should own?

Giordano: Like the black dress, every woman must own a classic pair of black heels like our Turner heel. The point is perfection and the strap adds a bit of playfulness to the staple. It’s the heel that could go with anything, should she need it to.

She should also have an interesting neutral like the Sierra heel in cognac. It is a perfect complement piece that is still playful yet elegant.

Every woman needs a showstopper in her arsenal. A pair that truly brings out her inner, Parisian woman. It could be the gold metallic Emmy bootie or the eye catching Veronica in navy/lilac with a snakeskin heel. I don’t know exactly which specific style it is; it’s the one that makes her feel unstoppable.

Gloria's glorious style

Smoking hot television superstar, Sofia Vergara, spills all — her Emmy nomination, favorite red carpet moment and what’s next for her on Modern Family.

As we sit down in Sofia's closet, which is covered with racks of her clothing line, we can't help but stare at her perfect, well... everything — her body, luscious locks, red lips, sexy accent... we could go on.

Four weeks into filming the fourth season of Modern Family, this Emmy nominee can't help but gush about her hit show, style and her favorite Vera Wang dress.

SheKnows: How would you describe your personal style?

Vergara: I think I’ve changed throughout my life because with different ages, you have to adjust. Before, I used to be in the Latin market and was sexier. Now, if I show a little bit of leg, I try to not show too much cleavage, and vice versa. But I try to use lots of color — a woman shouldn’t be afraid of color. . But I feel my style is whatever makes me look good!

SheKnows: Who are your favorite designers?

Vergara: My favorite designers are those that have always made me feel sexy — for example, I love Dolce & Gabbana because their dresses fit me very easy [well]. I like Valentino because it’s all so classic. I love Diane von Furstenberg — she’s very wearable for all women. And whenever I want to go crazy, I like Cavalli!

SheKnows: What’s your favorite red carpet moment?

Vergara: I’m always very happy with my results because I have a very good stylist. I usually pick the dress I feel more comfortable in. The first time I was on a big red carpet, I wore a Carolina Herrera, and I loved last year’s Vera Wang — the coral dress.

SheKnows: We love Sofia by Sofia Vergara for Kmart! What are your favorite pieces from the line?

Vergara: Everything! I’m involved in the creative part of the designs. The jeans and the leggings are my favorite! My friends beg me to have them.

Sofia Vergara at Emmy Awards

"I usually pick the dress I feel more comfortable in."

SheKnows: Congratulations on your Emmy nomination for Modern Family! What’s your favorite part about playing your character, Gloria?

Vergara: I can put a lot of my Latin culture into the character to make it more real, so it’s a lot of fun to play.

SheKnows: What’s next for Gloria?

Vergara: She is going to be pregnant this whole season, so it’s been very interesting, but I think it’s going to be a fun season!

Don't forget to catch Sofia Vergara in the season premiere of Modern Family Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.

Hair trends we're falling for this fall

Bored with your current hair look? You’re in luck because we’ve sourced some of the hottest styles for a whole new season. Whether you want a subtle shift or a way to really change things up, this fall sees several stylish hair options.
Ponytail
Model: Herve Leger By Max Azria

Pretty ponytails

Jason Wu and Ralph Lauren showed that the humble ponytail deserves its place in the hairstyle spotlight. Not only is the ponytail versatile , but it can easily go from casual to elegant depending on how you style it. To capture the sleek, sophisticated look we spied on the runways, prep hair with styling serum to add shine and minimize frizz. Then flat iron hair as straight as you can get it, pull back into a sleek ponytail and secure with anything from simple elastics to more eye-catching options.

blunt bangs
Model: Juanjo Oliva

Blunt bangs

Straight-across bangs were a fixture on several fall 2012 runways, including Marni, Versace and Elie Saab . This look is dramatic and definitely a change if you don’t currently have bangs, or sport a longer, side swept fringe. The key to getting it right is to talk to your stylist about whether or not this look works with your face shape, and if so, how best to go about it so it suits you. Blunt bangs can work with many hair lengths, from chin to shoulder and offer a quick way to update your overall style.

natural looking hair
Model: Honor

Natural-looking hair

One look we were pleasantly surprised to see on more than a few fall runways was simple, natural-looking hair that showed off natural body and healthy sheen. What does this mean for you? You can unplug the flat iron, go easy on the hairspray and let your real tresses take the stage -- minus much enhancement. We’re not suggesting rolling out of bed and out the door without so much as a cursory comb through, but you can rest easy knowing that as long as your locks are clean, trimmed and healthy, you can get away with just about anything!

Statement accessories
Model: Dolce & Gabbana

Statement accessories

Statement hair accessories took the fall runways by storm and we saw some stand-out pieces adorning models' tresses at Tory Burch and Dolce & Gabbana. One of the easiest and fastest ways to switch up your look for any season, accessories add instant interest to your look with a just a few snaps of a barrette. For this fall look for feminine pieces , metallic pieces and anything with embellishments to really make a statement for the season.

Who doesn’t love heels? We’re huge fans and have a decidedly large collection, but that doesn’t stop us from shopping for more! That’s why this week on Pretty Little Things , we’re talking heels.

Oxford heels

Oxford heels

We couldn’t resist this cute pair of lace-up oxfords with a sky high heel . The menswear-inspired shoe has stuck around for a few seasons and is showing no signs of going anywhere. Wear this pair with a pencil skirt, pretty button up blouse and thick knit tights for a fall-ready office outfit.

Cap toe heels

Cap toe heels

Add a splash of color to your shoe collection with a pair of bold jade patent leather pumps featuring a navy heel and cap toe . We love the vibrant hue and the fact that these heels will instantly add interest to any fall outfit you put together.

Wedge booties

Wedge booties

If you feel like you need some height but don’t want to teeter around on regular heels all day, we suggest slipping on a pair of these Marc by Marc Jacobs platform wedge booties in soft gray suede . Pair these with anything from skinny jeans to dresses and tights.

Brown pumps

Brown pumps

Swap basic black for this pair of rich chocolaty brown Tory Burch pumps with an almond toe and stacked heel . Perfect for pairing with any one of fall’s go-toe hues , these heels are an ideal addition to your at-work wardrobe.

Zipper booties

Ankle booties remain a fall fixture this season and we don’t mind one bit. The easy-wearing heels go with just about anything and they make getting ready a snap. Take this black zip-up pair for example . The sleek look, subtly pointed toe and stacked heel and aforementioned zipper on the side make them a fall must-have.

We have a total hairstyle crush on Jessica Alba's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Jessica Alba has got to be one of the hottest moms in Hollywood these days! Would you agree? The star showed up to SELF Magazine's 5th Annual Women Doing Good Awards in NYC this week rocking an embellished sheer black blouse and a super cute updo.

OK, I know what you're thinking: It's just a simple updo, right? Sure, but it has a tad bit of an edge! The key? The wispy pieces in the front. They add a nice extra little detail to an otherwise disciplined look. And if you look closely at the back, you'll notice a slight bit of volume at the crown. Yep, that my friends is what takes this look from sleek and boring to sexy and voluminous.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Rebecca Minkoff and Dawn Olivieri

Rebecca Minkoff and Dawn Olivieri's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Rebecca Minkoff

Rebecca Minkoff

So it's no secret that we're a little bit obsessed with Rebecca Minkoff here at SheKnows! We love following her collection, but we also love checking out her own personal style. And this week, I'm in love with her bright yellow dress!

The stylish designer showed up to this week's New Yorkers for Children 2012 Fall Gala in a gorgeous bright yellow gown that makes me smile. Sure, fall officially starts this week, but this sunny yellow gives us all a little hope that we'll get a warm season.

The final verdict? I can't help but feel happy when I look at this dress! It's beautiful, flowy and elegant and Rebecca accessorized perfectly here. I love that she cinched her waist especially, since it helps accentuate her gorgeous figure.

Dawn Olivieri

Dawn Olivieri

Doesn't Dawn Olivieri look like a Grecian goddess? Seriously, the Showtime star showed up to this week's Audi and Derek Lam Pre-Emmy party this week looking amazing.

Let's break down the look, shall we? The color of Dawn's Jay Godfrey gown is so on trend for fall, to start off. Jewel tone trend, anyone? And I'm loving how it meshes so beautifully with her ombre hair! Dawn accessorized with Dannijo earrings, a Swarovski ring and what else? Louboutins!

The final verdict? A flowy dream. It's a sexy but subtle look that I totally am going to steal sometime!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Lady Gaga and Mindy Kaling

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Lady Gaga and Mindy Kaling's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga

Ohmygaga! What in the world is this furry mess that Lady Gaga wore in London? It's Fashion Week in London and this monstrosity is what Mother Monster donned to watch the Philip Treacy show.

Apparently Gaga thinks burqas, dead animals and dirty words are super trendy this season. The singer, who's come under fire from PETA for wearing fur in the past, upped the ante in this flesh-colored ensemble and accessorized with raccoon tails. No word on if they're real or fake, but one thing's for sure: They are really ugly.

Her clutch, which is embroidered with the infamous C word , is also pretty offensive. We'd like to suggest that Gaga look up another C word in the dictionary since she's clearly lacking in it: class.

The final verdict? We're certainly not the only ones finding fault with Gaga's fashion this week. Muslims were also insulted that she'd wear a burqa while carrying a purse bearing a bad word.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling

We loved Mindy Kaling on The Office, and we bet her new show, The Mindy Project, will be great, too. But perhaps Mindy can find time in her busy schedule for another project: finding a new stylist!

The comedienne headed to a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman in this wine-colored getup. Winter isn't here just yet, so there's no need to dress in layers. Mindy wore a polka dot print collared blouse underneath her high-waisted tank dress. The wide cut of the skirt adds bulk to her small frame. A pencil skirt would have been more slimming.

And what's with her leopard pumps? Animal accents are hot but they really don't match her outfit. There's just too much print going on here.

The final verdict? Hey, at least she didn't offend any religious groups with her fashion mistake! Mindy should stick to trying one trend at a time and go for cuts that flatter her figure. We love her lipstick, though.

Seasonal skin shift: Prepping your skin for colder weather

$
0
0
Not all skin care regimens are created equal. In fact, it’s important to switch things up with every season. Now that the weather is cooling down , it’s time to get your complexion prepped for fall and we’re here to show you how.

woman applying face lotion

Consider a cream cleanser

If you switched to a gel cleanser for summer like many of us did, it might be time to go back to something with a little more heft as the weather cools down. A creamier cleanser is less drying on the skin and won’t strip the skin of its natural moisture. Try Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution , a rich, creamy cleanser that works to lift impurities while helping to maintain skin’s moisture levels no matter how cold it gets.

Dial up hydration

As temperatures start to drop, so can the moisture level in our skin, which means it’s time to focus on hydration. If you were using a lighter lotion for spring and summer, you might want to add something creamier to your arsenal of moisture boosting products. Or, if you need a little something extra, we suggest adding a hydrating serum into the mix. Smooth a small amount on after cleansing but before your regular moisturizer to ensure skin stays supple.

Hit the spa

Regular spa treatments can get pricey, but it’s a good idea to invest in one as the seasons change so a skin care pro can analyze your complexion and guide you to the best routine for your skin type. Book a facial at your favorite spa and you should get a fairly detailed analysis of your skin and what it needs. Ask questions about anything you’re not sure about and take full advantage of having an expert there to impart their skin-perfecting wisdom.

Exfoliate if you don’t already

Say goodbye to clogged pores and dull, lackluster skin. Start the new season off right by making sure to regularly exfoliate your skin . Not only will you end up with a smoother, healthier, brighter complexion, but anything you put on your skin will be able to penetrate much easier when it doesn’t have to fight through a layer of dead skin cells. Ask a skin care professional what type of exfoliator is best for your skin type to avoid irritation.

sunscreenStay the sunscreen course

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can pack away your sunscreen. On the contrary, there’s never a time when adequate sun protection should be overlooked. Remember to apply before heading out of the house even on cloudy days and use a broad spectrum product that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Makeup habits your boyfriend hates

$
0

We’ve all heard the saying that women dress for other women, not for men. It’s a competitive jungle out there and we all want to be the envy of our peers when we walk in a room. We apply this same principle to makeup, forgetting that we are applying too much makeup for most men’s tastes. Read up on the makeup habits your man hates. Your boyfriend will thank you for it.

Man watching girlfriend apply makeup

Cake face

If you are applying your foundation with a masonry trowel, we need to talk. Layers upon layers of foundation make you look pasty and fake. Foundation is meant to even out your natural skin tone, not cover it up. Guys dislike this because you are ruining all their white shirts with all that tinted spackle.

Tony M. of Boston, MA explains it this way, “Its texture is obnoxious and the stuff smells like a cross between unrefined petroleum jelly and my grandma. I remember my younger years, sorta, and the damage this stuff did to my Levi's 501 jean jacket... please! I needed a strong upholstery cleaner to get it off my sacred denim! Chicks just don't get it... makeup may make you look different but it’s not always pretty.”

Raccoon eyes

Ladies, we know you love your lone ranger mask, but it’s gotta go. Sorry. Don’t kill the messenger. Boys want to look into your eyes, not be distracted by the glob of mascara in the corner of your eye that’s large enough to have its own solar system. Eyeliner should be used as close to the lash line as possible, to give your lashes definition. Unless you are a hair band from the '80s, eyeliner was never meant to be a stand-alone cosmetic.

False lashesElephant lashes

We’re not quite done with over-the top lash and brow styles. Affixing obviously artificial lashes to your eyes makes you look, what’s the word? Oh yes. Ridiculous. Eyelashes should look like they surround your eye, not the body of a caterpillar.

Lip glossLip gloss

While we could see why guys would get annoyed with the previously mentioned makeup habits, this is confusing. Don’t they want our lips to look like we just licked them? Evidently not. Although the consensus on this seems to be less about how it looks and more about how it feels and tastes. Men just don’t dig smooching someone who feels like they have Gorilla Glue on their lips.

Making them wait

Vince S. of Phoenix, AZ says, “I can’t stand habits that make me late.” And by that, he means your Gone With the Wind primp time. Vince isn’t alone. Guys can’t stand it when they pick you up for a date and you’re still busy with your facial “masterpiece.” In the first place, it’s rude and inconsiderate. It also makes you look high maintenance. But above all, you are forgetting what men are looking for in makeup over and over again -- a natural look. While you’re busy trying to duplicate the Kim Kardashian bruised-eye look, he’d be happy with just a freshened up version of you.

We're Obsessed!

We have a total hairstyle crush on Tina Fey's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

OK, OK, so the Emmys were totally over a week ago, but I still can't get over some of the fabulous looks we saw on the red carpet. Today, I'm going to pay homage to Miss Tina Fey's lovely 'do. I think we can all agree that Tina was looking hot on the red carpet in her body-hugging burgundy Vivienne Westwood gown! And that hair? Perfection.

Remington celebrity stylist Richard Marin created the glamorous, twisted updo, and I got the scoop from him on how to get the look for yourself at home. You can thank me later!

Get the look

"For Tina’s style this year, I went for a swept back look with an edge. I pulled the hair off the face with volume at the bangs and added twists pulled back into loose tendrils at the back of the head," Marin said.

  1. Since volume is a huge part of this look, start by blow drying hair upside down.
  2. Next, curl with a large barrel iron to get bend.
  3. Backcomb the bang area of hair to get some height.
  4. Starting above the ear, twist 2-inch sections, drag hair back and secure with a pin at the back center. Make sure to leave the ends out, though! Repeat this process until you have a pompadour on top of the head with tight sides and the ends loose.
  5. Finish off the look with pomade to reduce frizz, and you'll be ready for your own red carpet moment!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Rihanna and Tina Fey

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Rihanna and Tina Fey's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Rihanna

Rihanna

Looks like someone overslept! Rihanna must have rolled out of bed and gone straight to the grand opening of Jay-Z's 40/40 Club in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. Why else would she be wearing her pajamas on the red carpet?

This silk ensemble is from Acne's Resort 2013 collection. And while maybe we could understand wearing it on a safari vacation or something, it's so not right for a red carpet affair. RiRi must have been in a really big rush because she forgot to button up her top as well. Can't Beyonce give her some fashion tips or her stylist's name?

Then again, perhaps Ri's sartorial mistakes are the last thing we should be concerned about. We're far more upset at the fact that she's been making out with her abusive ex Chris Brown at a NYC club. On Thursday, the two were caught on camera sitting together at Jay-Z's concert. Will she ever learn?!

The final verdict? We can forgive your fashion faux pas, Rihanna, but going back to Chris Brown again is a deal breaker!

Tina Fey

Tina Fey

Oh Tina, you looked so good at the Emmys that we thought your days on the worst dressed list were over. From her Vivienne Westwood gown to her hair and makeup, Tina was picture perfect that night. But when she wore this getup to a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman, she clearly wasn't ready for her close up.

It's true that this is Tina before she hit wardrobe and got help from the glam squad, so the casual look is fine, but those hideous navy clogs have got to go! And just because you're a mom yourself does not mean you're required to wear mom jeans, Tina. Cuffed, baggy jeans are not cute. Something fitted would have gone nicely with the classic navy striped sweater.

The final verdict? We like the preppy sweater. By simply pairing it with skinny jeans and some cute boots , this outfit could have easily been turned into a do!

mark M. Power goes Greene

SheKnows was recently invited to hang out with Ashley behind the scenes of her photo shoot with Mark Cosmetics.

On the set of her photo shoot for Mark's most recent M.Powerment campaign, Ashley Greene gave us the low down on the beauty and the cause. Plus, she relives her best red carpet moment ever!

During our beauty chat with Ashley Greene, we found out what drives Ashley's style and how she and Mark Cosmetics are setting out to empower women and end relationship abuse.

In order to do so, Mark is promoting one of their classic lipsticks, M.Powerment Petal, a shade that Ashley concocted herself. One-hundred percent of the net proceeds will go toward ending partner violence.

"There's something about putting on a lip shade... it makes me feel more powerful."

"They came to me and I learned about M.Powerment and what Mark was about: being beautiful inside as well as out. It's been a really great partnership," Ashley told SheKnows on a break between shots.

"They brought a whole bunch of different shades and I chose two and mixed them together. I didn't want to make it too pinky or too dark. It came out great and I think the fact that it goes to such a great cause and you can take a lipstick and actually help women who are being abused and end the cycle of dating abuse and violence is a really wonderful thing."

Watch the interview

Though she was having fun as a model for the day, she says that acting is still definitely her home base. "Modeling is a whole different animal. I'm more comfortable whenever I'm on set definitely."

Beauty Beat: How Ashley Greene uses beauty to empower women

SheKnows goes behind the scenes of Ashley Greene\'s photo shoot with Mark to talk beauty survival tips and empowering women.

What makeup empowers Ashley?

"There is something about putting on a lip shade. Whenever my lips pop, it makes me feel a little bit more powerful and a little bit more present."

As for fall and the colors Ashley will be breaking in, "Definitely berries," she said. "I'm looking forward to that. A lot of burnt orange and brown."

Get cozy with these graphic sweaters for fall >>

As for her wardrobe, she is just as excited as we are to break out our cozy sweaters and scarves. And jewelry! No matter what the season, Ashley says that's not changing for her. "I always have jewelry." For a simple, classic girl like her, it's the easiest way to give your favorite styles the extra push toward fashion forward.

Who are Ashley's style icons?

So, we weren't surprised that she has a big style crush on Audrey Hepburn. "I think that she was so classic and so beautiful and never contrived and always hit the mark." Who could disagree? Not us.

"Audrey Hepburn is my go-to. [She was] never contrived and always hit the mark."
Style icon Sienna Miller

"[She] is always effortless, always very cool."
Style icon Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow

"[She] always has a way of being very sexy but very sophisticated."
Ashley Greene red carpet moment in Fuschia Donna Karen

& Ashley's moment

"It was a show stopping fuchsia-colored dress. It was so beautiful."

As Ashley puts it about her style icons Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller, they push boundaries without going overboard. "[These women] can do things and have their own sense of style in moderation without being too trendy because I feel like trends just don't work for everybody."

Well put, Ashley. Understated elegance with a subtle risk is the way to go.

And then there's her own red carpet moment she's coveting right now. "I just recently wore a Donna Karan dress to my The Apparition premiere and it was this bright fuchsia color. The wind happened to be blowing so it blew the dress back." The perfect photo op.

Friday's Fashion Obessions: Emma Watson and Malin Akerman

Emma Watson and Malin Akerman's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson

Is it just me or is this quite possibly one of the cutest evening looks in history? Emma Watson showed up to last week's London screening of her new film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, looking classic, classy and cute all at once. But would you expect any less from Dior Haute Couture?

Let's break down the look, shall we? I'm kind of in love with the cocktail mini/pants combo, aren't you? It's cold in London, so it's quite practical. But this look is so much more than practical -- it's breathtaking. The soft velvet material has a subtle pop of glimmery glamour and hugs Emma in all the right spots.

The final verdict? Don't be surprised if you see this trend popping up everywhere this winter. Wearing a cute cocktail mini over leggings or slim pants gives you the best of both worlds and prevents you from freezing your ass off. Enough said.

Malin Akerman

Malin Akerman

We hear congratulations are in order, Malin! The actress just announced her first pregnancy and she's already acting like one stylish mom to be. This weekend, Malin showed up to the 2012 Environmental Media Awards in California and was simply glowing in her Alexx Jae & Milk dress.

Malin's only in the early stages of pregnancy, but I have a feeling, based on this outfit, that she'll be sporting some serious fashions that flaunt her curves. I'm loving the on trend, deep color of this dress and those adorable sleeves, aren't you?

The final verdict? The key to this look is the accessories! Malin spiced up a somewhat normal silhouette with some edgy pieces -- look at those shoes! -- for a look that really stuck with me.

Age-appropriate clothing trends for teens

Teens love to be on top of the latest fashion trends -- parents want their teens to dress appropriately. How can you encourage your teen to be trendy but appropriate? We found ways she can rock the trends that won't rock the boat at home.

Keep her on-style, not on display

Teens love to be on top of the latest fashion trends — parents want their teens to dress appropriately. How can you encourage your teen to be trendy but appropriate? We found ways she can rock the trends that won't rock the boat at home.

Anything goes in the fashion world. The fall runway shows were filled with new trends and current twists on old favorites. While your teen may be ready to launch her own fall fashion show, you may have a few suggestions. Here are a few of the hottest new trends your teen may want to snag — and ways to keep you both happy.

Check out these teen trends that you might like to rock >>

faux-leather vestLeather or not

One of this season's hottest trends is leather. Everything from skinny jeans to dresses and skirts are now available in leather, making it practically mainstream. Leather clothing is not only expensive and difficult to care for, but it exudes a certain sexiness that may not be appropriate for teens. Tight leather skinny jeans may not be appropriate for math class, but how can she incorporate the look of leather and still follow the trend?

Bring the look of leather into her wardrobe with a faux-leather vest she can layer with her skinny jeans or favorite floral dress. Leather riding boots are a good choice, because they wear well and are easy to care for. A leather belt is an inexpensive and trendy addition to a favorite sweater dress.

sheer cardiganSheerly not appropriate

Sheer blouses are right on trend this year, paired with everything from floral skinny jeans to bright pink minis. What looks somewhat stunning on a runway model doesn't translate well to the teenager's wardrobe — ask any high school principal. A sheer scarf is an easy addition to any outfit and a great way to rock the trend. Or try a sheer cardigan over a simple tee or tank, bringing the look of the sheer fabric into her wardrobe without the peepshow. Another way to have fun with this trend is the hi-low skirt, with the longer layer made of sheer fabric. She gets the look she wants without the unwanted looks you don't.

Watch out for the teen fashion faux pas >>

Chambray work shirtsBustier busting out?

Like something out of the Old West, the bustier has left the bordello and hit the mall. These trendy tops are available in fabrics ranging from denim to leather, and every pattern imaginable. Is your teen busting to wear one, but you don't want her busting out? A perfect balance for fall is to pair a bustier top in a plaid or floral print with a cardigan, belted at the waist. Cardigans are hot right now, and by belting it at the waist she can create a completely different look with the bustier layered underneath. Chambray work shirts are on trend and make a great layer to add on top of a bustier top. Leave the front buttons open, or belt it for a different look.

Teens love to look trendy. Check out these trendy ideas and everyone will be happy with her choices.

Taking a style & making it her own

If there's one thing teenage girls have in common, it's a passion for expressing their individuality. What better way to show the world her style than with her clothes? We rounded up the best style trends — which one is your daughter rockin' this fall?

They may say that clothes make the man, but what about a teenage girl? Teen girls have a style all their own, and no two are exactly alike. When she dresses for school or social activities, what are her clothes saying about her?

Gossip Girl -- Preppy style

Preppy

If your daughter looks like she's headed for boarding school or the school library, you have a preppy girl in your house. The preppy look is here to stay, thanks in part to the popularity of the hit television series Gossip Girl. Think short pleated skirts in traditional plaid with a kick of color, paired with a crisp white shirt, loosely tied men's necktie and loafers. Brightly hued tights add a bit of punch and surprise to a preppy look. Vests are a popular addition this season, in fabrics ranging from denim to leather. School uniform style provides a starting point for this look, and the only limit is her imagination.

Rihanna -- Sporty style

Sporty

Does your daughter prefer a more casual, relaxed look? Athletic-inspired gear isn't just for the gym! Girls can rock a sporty look any day of the week. Pair a front-zip hoodie with a pair of ripped skinny jeans, Converse sneaks and a plain white tee for a cute sporty look at school. Stripes are trendy this season, showing up everywhere from tees and tanks to hoodies. Old-school letterman jackets are a colorful way to add a fun, sporty look to any outfit. Yoga pants look on-trend when paired with a fitted tee and hoodie. Who says you have to be an athlete to be sporty?

Olivia Palmero -- Girly style

Girly

Does your daughter love being a girly girl? Some girls are all about the frills, and this year's fall fashions won't disappoint. Floral-print skinny jeans are a great way for your daughter to add a girly touch. Paired with a sheer lace top layered over a cami and accented by long necklaces and ballet flats with a bow detail, this outfit will help her show that feminine side. Vests made of lace or sheer fabric are big this year, or maybe she prefers a fitted tuxedo-style jacket over a favorite floral dress. There is nothing stuffy about the girly look — think relaxed, romantic and comfortable.

What if she's making a teen fashion faux pas? >>

Solange -- Funky style

Funky

Do you wonder which girl will emerge from your daughter's bedroom each morning? If you aren't sure what her style is, she may be rocking the funky look. One day it may be animal-print skinny jeans with a bold yellow tunic and a fur vest — the next, who knows? Brightly colored pieces, mismatched prints and patterns, hats, stripes, chunky boots and unusual jewelry are mainstays of this look. Think modern-day Punky Brewster style. Anything goes, which should make getting ready for school go faster in the morning, right?

The fun thing about being a teenager is that your style can evolve as you try different looks and combinations. What does your teen's clothing say about her? She's one of a kind.

This season, take fashion direction from young starlets. Celeb fashions set the stage for trendy additions to your wardrobe. You'll be surprised at how well teen styles transition to mom-approved fashion.

Flouncy feminine skirts

At New York Fashion Week, English pop star Cher Lloyd performed her hit single "Want U Back" in a flirty satin skirt and pumps paired with an animal print top. This fall, embrace the flattering fitted waist and flouncy skirt trend in easy-to-wear neutrals with tights and bold pumps.

Form-fitting bustiers

Former Nickelodeon star turned singer-songwriter Keke Palmer rocked the red carpet in a bright bustier and a tight side ponytail. With the right touches, a bustier can work for teens and moms. Try this ultra-flirty, ultra-flattering cut in a fitted top or party dress.

Keke Palmer

strapless, bustier dress

Try it on your teen

Choose a strapless bustier dress in a casual or lacy fabric to try the trend without getting overly sexy. Pair it with bright-colored tights or leggings and dangly earrings. Remember, this style is more suited for a formal dance or party than school .

LC Lauren Conrad shirtdress

Make it work for mom

Pair a bustier neckline with a sheer top or dress that hints at the lingerie-inspired shape without showing too much skin. This LC Lauren Conrad shirtdress keeps it trendy with a beaded color and a vintage silhouette .
