The secret to getting illuminated skin

Sparkles, shimmer, glitter: the usual makeup suspects for a night out on the town. They can certainly add a lot of glamour to an evening look; however, these showy cosmetics are no shortcut to healthy and naturally illuminated skin. When makeup can be seen , it’s time to reevaluate your beauty routine and take a simpler approach.

Simple & beautiful skin

Sparkles, shimmer, glitter: the usual makeup suspects for a night out on the town. They can certainly add a lot of glamour to an evening look; however, these showy cosmetics are no shortcut to healthy and naturally illuminated skin. When makeup can be seen , it’s time to reevaluate your beauty routine and take a simpler approach.

Always exfoliate

A good place to start is by exfoliating your face two or three times a week to expose the freshest, newest layer of skin cells. This maximizes hydration absorption, instantly attracting surrounding light and making it bounce off your now-smoother complexion.

Veil Cosmetics Illuminating Complexion Fix Conceal like a celeb

As a celebrity makeup artist, I often get asked how to use concealer like starlets do, who, of course, always look flawless. Truthfully, evenness of skin tone is priority number one. Nothing makes someone look fresher and more uplifted than spot-free, blemish-free, even-toned skin. My favorite products are hybrids that combine both skin care and makeup benefits, especially since cutting down the number of layers helps to avoid makeup meltdowns. I love using a treatment concealer like Veil Cosmetics Illuminating Complexion Fix . Not only can you immediately target areas of concern, like dark circles, dark spots, blemishes and skin dullness, but you are also contributing to the prevention of these skin flaws in the long run.

Go oil-free

Look for time-saving, oil-free, illuminating or brightening treatment concealers that grant hydration and that are non-irritating, while offering weightless, buildable coverage for both face and eyes. Always avoid wax- or cream-based textures, and look for more refined self-setting concealers. This means that a beautiful satin finish can be obtained without having to resort to face powder, which ultimately ends up looking cakey and emphasizing fine lines.

Know your skin's undertones

My last tip addresses skin’s undertones and choosing a shade that will seamlessly blend with your complexion. Gone are the days when one had to apply foundation all over the face -- you can spot-treat imperfections, conceal only under the eyes, etc. Great-looking skin appears untouched. Once you’ve perfectly veiled areas of concern, watch the magic happen!

From now on, whenever you want to achieve beautiful, even and illuminated skin, say goodbye to glitzy tricks or heavy foundations, and step out in broad daylight as if your skin was light-infused. As I always say: Makeup is a mask, beauty -- a veil.

Whit's bringing back the ankle bracelet

Whitney Port’s 2013 spring line for Whitney Eve featured some interesting geometric prints, pretty pastels and the revival of an old school favorite: the ankle bracelet. We're backstage at her New York Fashion Week show talking trends.

Whitney Port showed off her funky style on the runway at the Whitney Eve 2013 spring/summer show at Lincoln Center during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

Aside from already popular trends like peplum, sheer fabric and maxi skirts, we saw the reincarnation of an old school favorite: the ankle bracelet.

But her accessories aren't like the delicate chains of the past. Whitney's anklets are chunky and bold, more heavy-metal than hippy.

Backstage after the show, we quizzed Whit on her new line and her tips for fellow fashionistas.

Q&A with Whitney Port

SheKnows: What was the inspiration behind this line?

Whitney: The inspiration was all about stones and natural elements and prisms. Obviously it was print heavy, and I mixed those feminine prints with more tomboy, oversized masculine silhouettes.

SheKnows: We are loving the ankle bracelet revival! Do you think these will make a full comeback?

Whitney: I hope so. I’m trying to make them!

SheKnows: What is your favorite thing in your own closet right now?

Whitney: This black blazer. I got it in Australia and I noticed that I wear it with everything.

Whitney Port's three fashion week must-haves

SheKnows: What three things do you always have on you during Fashion Week?

Whitney: Lip gloss, soda and some nuts.

Fergie takes over NYFW

Fergie hosts a runway show for Case-Mate’s trendy new line at New York Fashion Week and chats with SheKnows about her own personal style.

"The Dutchess" Fergie looked G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S as always Wednesday night as she hosted a runway show at New York Fashion Week for the cool new cell phone covers by Case-Mate.

"We’re having the first ever fashion show to showcase the cases," said Fergie. "It’s all about accessorizing. It’s like jewelry, a statement piece. It says a lot about who you are."

With her sparkling personality, Fergie’s gold glitter case was the perfect choice to complement her gold-accented Balmain jacket and Fergie Footwear.

Her favorite trends

Though she told us she didn’t have a chance to attend her favorite designers' shows because she just got in town, she did give us the scoop on what looks she’s loving right now.

"I love Marc Jacobs. I love the vertical stripes. I can’t wait to try that on. It would be good for curvy girls like me."

"I love Marc Jacobs," said Fergie. "I love the vertical stripes. I can’t wait to try that on. It would be good for curvy girls like me."

Beauty-wise, Fergie said she’s digging Wet N Wild’s affordable products. The singer sported a pretty lip tint called "Just Peachy" and told us she is releasing her own nail polish line for the company soon.

"This is velvet lounge from my nail collection which I’m launching," she told us of her moody dark red tips.

Fergie's fashion crush

As for stylish celebs she admires, Fergie told us fellow crooner Kelly Osbourne is a favorite.

"She’s looking hot right now," she told us of the Fashion Police host.

Personal style

Though Fergie always looks fabulous, she told us that at home, she likes to dress comfortably.

"I have this great dress that I bought and I wore once and it got photographed a ton," said Fergie. "Instead of just letting it sit in my closet, I wear it around the house. It’s comfortable and it’s silky and I figure why wear it just once? I want to feel great in my house."

And we’re sure her hot hubby Josh Duhamel doesn’t mind.

"Josh didn’t even recognize the dress, he just went ‘Oh, I love that,’" she told us. "He doesn’t care [what I wear]. He just loves me in a T-shirt."

Fergie’s advice to women is to not get caught up in trends and wear pieces that flatter your personal style.

"Be aware of the trends, but only utilize the ones that work for you," said Fergie.

"Be aware of the trends, but only utilize the ones that work for you."

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Julianne Hough

We have a total hairstyle crush on Julianne Hough's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Julianne Hough at NYFW 2012

Is this a haircut I'm spotting, Julianne? Whether it is or this is an illusion updo, I'm loving it either way! And where did we spot the star sporting this lovely, messy, beachy 'do? None other than New York Fashion Week, of course!

The style goes so well with the loose, airy fabric of this gorgeous maxi, don't you think? Now those shoes… I'm not the biggest fan of them, at least not with this dress. But hey, we're talking about hair here people! And as far as that look is concerned, this one earns an A in my book.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Jennifer Hudson and Lea Michele

0

Jennifer Hudson and Lea Michele's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson

Can I just say how fabulous Jennifer Hudson is looking these days? Seriously, the Weight Watchers spokesperson and talented triple threat -- singer, actress and now designer! -- is simply looking phenomenal. This week, she debuted her new line for QVC at New York Fashion Week and made quite the fashionable appearance at the Project Runway show.

I don't know about you, but I'm kind of dying over this gorgeous Michael Kors teal pantsuit and blazer. The color meshes beautifully with Jennifer's skin tone and fits her so well. Seriously, the tailoring here is impeccable. It's also quite a fun look even though it's professional looking. Jennifer made sure to spice things up with her cute side braid and flawless makeup.

The final verdict? You go, girl! Sexy, sweet and sophisticated wrapped up in an amazing colorful hue.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele

Geez Lea Michele, could you stop making us all look so bad? All kidding aside, the Glee star has been looking quite fashionable lately! And this week, she showed up to the show's premiere screening and reception in Hollywood looking quite fabulous.

How sexy is this dress? There's something to be said for leaving a little bit to the imagination, and this dress achieves sexy without erring on the slutty side. Cutouts are still going strong in the fashion world this season, and I love how Lea worked a lacy one into this body-hugging black gown. The best part? The sheer lacy back. To die for.

The final verdict? The deep cut neck on this gown has the potential to turn slutty, but with Lea being a bit small chested, it just seems to work. Loving it!

Mary Alice reports

Mary Alice Stephenson is a coveted queen in the fashion industry. Among styling the best of the best, she is also a mommy on-the-go who knows how to stay put together when you're feeling put down. She and other top Fashionistas like Nina Garcia posted live NYFW updates here and shared their style tips with SheKnows.

SheKnows: We hear you have a great closet. What fall trends are you keeping in there and what spring trends are you excited to add?

Mary Alice: A little bit of leather – a touch of lace, fun playful patterns and prints. Loads of sexy clothes done in a ladylike way. The perfect pump, a peplum skirt, colorful pants, shades of red and dresses with cutouts that embrace my curves.

Mary Alice's purse and shoe closet

SheKnows: What are your favorite places to shop in NYC and in Brooklyn?

Mary Alice: In Dumbo, Brooklyn I do most of my fashion week shopping at Zoe. They have so many of my faves: Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Céline. In the city I get ladylike at Bergdorf Goodman, and downtown cool at Kirna Zabete. All my glam comes from Lanvin and I get stiletto-ed to the max at Saks. When I’m in a pinch and there’s no time to shop, I love that Net-A-Porter will deliver same day!

Mary Alice jewelry

SheKnows: What are some easy ways to up the ante of your look when you’re feeling a little frumpy or sad?

Mary Alice: Jewelry adds soul to style, so brighten your day the fashionista way. Everything looks better with jewelry on top. Throw on some rings, wear a cuff or add a pendant necklace to pretty it up.

"Jewelry adds soul to style, so brighten your day the fashionista way. "

SheKnows: What are some beauty trends you’ve been noticing backstage lately?

Mary Alice: Strong brows. Nude lips. A pop of color on your lids or nail tips. Part your hair in the middle, pull it back behind your ears or try a ladylike updo.

SheKnows: What are three things you never leave the house without?

Mary Alice: My iPhone, iPad and lots of eye candy.

SheKnows: Who is one celebrity you’re just dying to style? And what would you dress her in?

Mary Alice: Kate Middleton always looks great, but I’d love to see her have more fun with fashion in a downtown cool kind of way – Narciso Rodriguez, Altuzarra, Rodarte or Cushnie + Ochs would do the trick.

Behind the Scenes with Mary: See all of her Fashion Week updates here where tons of fashionistas posted live from the shows to Facebook >>

SheKnows: Are there any red carpet looks you’ve styled that you’d redo?

Mary Alice: To quote the Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar, Glenda Bailey,  “Fashion is what’s right, right now.” I’m thankful for all the amazing red carpet moments I’ve created and try to always look forward, never back.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Kim Kardashian and Heather Thomson

0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Kim Kardashian and Heather Thomson's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian's style has definitely transformed since she started dating Kanye West, but we're not sure if it's an upgrade. The girl who once constantly wore colorful Herve Leger bandage dresses now seems to favor neutrals.

Kim K rocked this fringed white dress during New York Fashion Week to the Marchesa show, where she sat front row with her designing beau. Someone needs to tell Kim that white is not slimming, and when you're famous for your larger than life booty, wearing a super-tight white dress isn't so figure flattering.

The E! reality star also used to play up her cleavage, but her décolletage is all covered up in this fringed frock with lace sleeves. The top of the dress looks like a knitting project gone awry, with yarn hanging all over.

The final verdict? We hear Kanye has been giving Kim styling help lately, but does she really wanna take fashion pointers from a guy wearing denim on denim? Just asking.

Heather Thomson

Heather Thomson

What's black and white and ugly all over? Real Housewife Heather Thomson was named one of Us Weekly's Most Stylish New Yorkers, but you'd never know it by the disaster she wore for the mag's party last night at STK in NYC. What the fug?!

According to her Twitter, this dress is by a brand called Evil, and we can see why. The black and white gown reminds us of a skeleton. And for a woman who makes her living selling slimming shapewear, we can't imagine why she chose this getup.

The black and white contrasting gown creates the wrong kind of optical illusion, making her silhouette look wide. We thought if we stared at it long enough, it might morph into something different, but no such luck.

The final verdict? When wearing colorblocked dresses or contrasting hues, look for pieces that have the darkest color on the outside and lighter ones inside to flatter your figure.

New York Fashion Week: Our favorite trends

Check out our most coveted trends from New York Fashion Week — straight from the tents at Lincoln Center.
Fashion Week trend

Spring/
Summer 2013

Check out our most coveted trends from New York Fashion Week — straight from the tents at Lincoln Center.

We've sat front row, seen hundreds of models and spotted major celebrities, which means two things: Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is officially over, and we now have a list of our favorite trends for next season.

But instead of listing every trend from the runways — and believe us, there are many — we've picked the absolute best trends that will be the most wearable come spring.

Trend report

No matter your budget, if you keep these notes in mind, you will instantly look on-trend — just as if you stepped off the catwalk.

Lace

We've seen lace pop up for the last few seasons, but this spring, add lace accents to anything from blouses to the lining of your skirt. Feeling slightly bold? Take note of the BCBG Max Azria show and opt for an entire lace dress — totally chic.

Tip: If you're not quite ready for a full lace moment, definitely start small — a pretty lace tee in a neutral color paired with colored denim and a fun flat will go a long way.

Black and white

There's nothing more classic than black and white — and chances are, you probably already have an assortment of options in your closet. Nanette Lepore's collection consisted of flowy black and white dresses, mixed with sleek, '70s-inspired black jumpsuits.

Tip: Pick one color you want to focus on and mix the other color in slightly with your shoes, bag or tee. You don't want to look like a complete ying and yang symbol.

Marc Jacobs' striped jacket

Stripes

Marc Jacobs showed standout stripe ensembles this season — everything from tees and pants to sweaters and coats. We love the idea of adding some stripes to any look — just make sure you're not in head to toe horizontals.

Tip: The same rule applies as always. While horizontal stripes can be totally flattering at times, they're not always, so if you have the option, opt for vertical stripes.

Derek Lam Leather

Leather

While leather is usually considered a fall and winter staple, designers proved it can easily transition to spring — just use in moderation. Everyone from Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and DKNY showed a variety of leather options — everything from lightweight jackets to colorful shift dresses.

Tip: Invest. Leather can be very expensive, but if you find the right piece, it will last you a lifetime. A fitted leather jacket or slimming dress will never go out of style!

Rebecca Minkoff outfit

Florals

Florals for spring? We know, not that new or groundbreaking, but that just proves that florals will always be here to stay. This season, take note from Richard Chai Love or Rebecca Minkoff, by adding slight floral accents to your pants, tops and coats.

Tip: Go wild with florals! This is the one print that will always look chic — no matter if you have an entire bold floral dress or a more muted floral blouse.

We saw a lot of bright yellow and bright green while trudging around the city for Spring Fashion Week, and Natalie proves that yellow doesn't have to be categorized as the color that washes every woman out.

  • Occupation: Dental assistant
  • Most expensive clothing item: Her black heels -- a classic investment
  • Most affordable clothing item: Her yellow blouse from Forever 21
  • Just because: You can make a feather headband just like hers by heading to the craft store.

They seemed to have a little bit of edge that we couldn't resist. A jean jacket with leopard print leggings and combat boots: We love what they're bringing to the table.

  • Occupation: Fashion video bloggers

Nail art trends we can't wait to try

0
0
If you’re craving a change where your nails are concerned, nail art is a great way to spice things up. From glitter and embellishments to gradient color and funky shapes, there are a myriad of ways to take your mani to the next level. We have the scoop on what you should try this fall.

Jessica Biel with french manicure

Nail art: Expert input

To learn more, we turned to the talented nail team at Salon AKS: Doris Nunez, Yohana Monsalve Suarez and Rita Arutyunova, for their insight into the hottest nail art trends to try now. Their most requested look? The "non-conventional tone French manicure." And by this they mean a light and dark blue look instead of the traditional white and pink French, which we think is a great look for cooler weather.

Nail art: Top trends

Tricking out your nails with more than just one color has been steadily gaining populariy over the past few seasons, in part, thanks to the A-list. “Celebrity trends always trickle down to the general population. Rihanna, Fergie, Beyonce and others have displayed an array of designs that spruce up the basic manicure,” explains Nunez. Other than what the stars are doing, there are a few hues to watch for this season. “Our clients are really gravitating towards blue and grayish hues. Navy and jewel tones will be in this fall,” she adds.

And don’t forget about ombre, but this time the gradient look has nothing to do with your tresses. “With the continued interest in ombre, we foresee a glitter ombre being very popular,” says Nunez.

Nail art: Where to start

Decals and polish strips are a great first foray into nail art, especially if you don’t have the time or patience to try something more complicated at home. “They require no dry time and why not have your favorite manicurist apply it for you professionally?” says Nunez. “Companies like Sally Hansen have taken out the messiness of do it yourself designs and made them attainable by using decals and polish strips."

If you want to play with traditional polish rather than decals or strips, go for some bling. “Adding a little bit of glitter can also be a great start and you can mix and match your favorite colors,” Nunez notes. Try a base coat in one color and add a layer of glitter polish on top, or do one nail in glitter polish and the rest in a solid shade.

Mane Event Mondays: How to care for ethnic hair

0
0
We're partnering up with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your most pressing hair questions. Up today? Master stylist Nick Arrojo is sharing his top tips for caring for ethnic hair.

African American woman

Your question

What are the basics to caring for ethnic hair? Do you have any unique tips for women of color?

Nick's answer!

African American ethnic hair is different in form than its Caucasian counterpart. It grows naturally curly and naturally frizzy. It also tends to be very coarse. Like with any other hair type, there is a rich diversity in the amount of curl, frizz and coarseness. African American women can have hair that is kinky, cottony, spiral-shaped, wooly, wavy and even relatively straight. But the natural tendency is for tight curls, thick hair and heavy density. This means that ethnic hair requires a unique method for the haircut and the day to day styling.

There are two ways that I recommend women deal with the challenges this type of hair presents.

scissor and combWork with your texture

The first way is to work with your natural texture to create ultra-simple, classical shapes in the haircut. Simple short and rounded shapes that make the hair super-easy to manage and longer, more layered cuts that create enough space between the curls to free the hair from tangles and celebrate the unique shapeliness of the curls are my favorites. The big bonus of this approach is that you can keep your hair’s natural texture but still make the otherwise highly challenging day to day styling simple and easy.

Photo gallery: Short hairstyles >>

Relax your strands

The second way is to use advanced salon techniques to reset the formation of your hair. This reformation can be extreme or minimal. You can choose to “relax” your hair in a way that will make it permanently straight or you can choose to reset your curls from tightly wound and stern to a much softer, looser, freer curl formation that can be manipulated into various shapes and styles more easily. The biggest benefit of these kinds of services? Especially for those who want to go straight for good , this service gives you a much wider array of hairstyles to choose from. If you do straighten your hair, then the wide variety of styles normally more suited to Caucasian hair types will be completely open to you.

Hair care tips

For care and upkeep, ethnic hair needs shampoos and conditioners that are rich in oil and moisture. Even as far back as 3,000 years ago, Egyptian women used oils as part of their own hair care regimen, and today you should walk like an Egyptian to tame your own curly, frizzy hair. Oil and moisture based shampoos and conditioners will literally provide a sealed barrier that holds in the hair’s moisture. Even better, look for products specially formulated for ethnic hair types. One warning: Don’t fall into the trap of believing that just because the bottle says it is specially designed for your hair that it’s a quality product.

The best way to know for sure what you’re getting is to check the ingredient list. Look for oils like coconut or nut oil, both great natural ingredients in shampoos and conditioners for helping to maintain the integrity of your hair. Also, look to see if the product contains Panthenol , a great ingredient to add moisture and shine. If not, what other moisture-giving ingredients does it contain? Look at the label to see if it makes a moisture-giving promise. You want the packaging and/or the person selling you the product to make clear that the product contains the right oils and the right moisture for your hair.

See what Nina had to say from one editor to another about must-haves, easy styling tips and the designers she was most amped about.

SK: Based on this week's runways, what are the top five trends every girl should try come spring?

Want more? Read all the Celebs on Facebook fashion updates here.

Nina Garcia: As you saw on my Facebook, I definitely have some favorite trends for spring. One of them is the '60s mod look that we saw at Marc Jacobs. I especially love the '60s-inspired short mod skirts. White leather dresses and tops as seen at Alexander Wang and DKNY were huge. I posted a lot of pieces that are black and white optical illusions and black and white stripes from Instagram when I was at the Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs shows. Denim will play center stage for spring, as it did for DKNY and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Sandal-boots are a definite! They were everywhere at Altuzarra and Alexander Wang.

Nina Garcia: Jessica Chastain, Kate Bosworth, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Cate Blanchett.

"It’s all about those pieces that can move from day to evening. For spring, shorts and beaded pieces are a great for this. "

SK: How can the average girl take a high fashion runway look to everyday wear?

Nina Garcia: It’s all about those pieces that can move from day to evening. For spring, shorts and beaded pieces are great for this. You could take a pair of cute shorts or a pair of cool skinny optical pants and pair them with an Oscar de la Renta-inspired beaded shirt.

SK: Who is your favorite designer right now?

Nina Garcia: I really enjoyed seeing all of the up and coming designers in New York and I’m really excited about all of the changes with Ralph at Dior and Hedi at YSL. I am looking forward to seeing what they show in Paris.

SK: What designer were you most surprised by this week?

Nina Garcia: I was really inspired by the futuristic '60s trend that we saw at many of the shows.

SK: Have you ever considered designing a line yourself?

Nina Garcia: Yes, I’ve been approached to design many times, but right now my focus is on being an editor.

SK: Tell us about your recent work with JC Penney. We love that you partnered with such an affordable brand.

Nina Garcia: I love my partnership with JC Penney. They are making exciting and unprecedented changes that will really reinvent the brand. It is one of the most forward-thinking retailers in America and they really care about their customers from beginning to end. They are all about providing the customers with fair prices, services and convenience -- no matter the price point -- and I am really thrilled to be working with them.

Nina Garcia's must-haves

SK: What are three things you never leave the house without?

Nina Garcia: A pair of stilettos, my Tom Ford reading glasses and my favorite Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm in Whole Lotta Honey.

The line: The luxury brand known for their signature use of sequins, feathers and prints debuted their spring/summer 2013 line.

The lacquers: Logan created a simple, colorful manicure to complement the beaded and intricate designs in the brand's collection. Two coats of JulieG in Cabana Boy created a natural nail. “The pieces themselves contain such intricate patterns, so I wanted to keep the nails as simple as possible as to not compete with the clothing,” Logan said. “I love this blue shade that Julie created and felt that it would complement the colors of the collection beautifully.”

Fun fact

YouTube beauty guru Julie Gutierrez created the JulieG Nail Polish Collection and was backstage to give her input on all the manicures heading down the runway! “I designed the color for Cabana Boy with spring and summer in mind. This whole collection was based on futuristic looks, so I love combining that with the idea of looking ahead to next season and breaking out this shade of blue for your manicure and pedicure!” Gutierrez said.

Long hair love

Long hair can often be ultra-easy to deal with. You can wear it down, tie it back, put it up -- the options seem pretty endless. But at the same time, your usual routine can get boring. If you’re starting to tire of your longer locks but don’t want to lose any length, we have some tips for fun new ways to style your hair.

Side swept strands

Simple but sexy, we love the side swept look for longer locks. Give your hair some texture by adding a salt water spray and working through with your fingers. Scrunch your locks from root to tip and then flip hair over to one side so you end up with a deep side part. Shake your hair out slightly and then add a light mist of holding product. The result: a fresh take on beach waves that can easily go from day to night.

Blunt bangs

Bored with your longer locks? Update your look by added a fringe . The contrast between longer hair and blunt bangs across your forehead instantly adds drama and a touch of playfulness. Talk to your stylist about the best way to go about adding bangs to your look in a way that suits your face shape and type of hair.

Kim Kardashian's Sleek ponytail

Sleek ponytail

If you always wear your hair down, why not change things up slightly by opting for a sleek ponytail? They may have been your go-to look as a kid, but the ponytail isn’t just for the 10-and-under set. A low or mid-rise ponytail is the perfect way to keep longer locks looking polished. Not to mention it’s a timeless style that works whether you’re heading to the office or out to meet friends for Sunday brunch. Simply gather your hair at the nape of your neck or slightly higher, secure with an elastic, and pin up any errant strands.

Slicked back and sporty

Give your longer locks a fresh twist by slicking them back for a sportier take on your usual look. First, flat iron your hair so it's as straight as you can get it. Then, apply a dime-size amount of gel from your hairline to the crown, working it through the hair for maximum hold. This pushes your strands back away from your face while providing an ultra-slick look. For extra hold, spritz a holding product onto the front of your hair to keep it from falling forward.

Add accessories

Accessories are a great way to freshen up your hair look and longer locks especially can benefit from the addition of clips, barrettes and bands. Simply adding a metallic hair band or some vibrant beaded pins or barrettes to your hair can instantly add interest to your overall look.

An interview with the countess

LuAnn de Lesseps is known for her elegant style on The Real Housewives of New York. Now the mother of two is sharing her fashion sense with the world as she debuts her new dress line for SheKnows. Come inside her NYC apartment with us and check it out.

You never get to see LuAnn de Lesseps inside her NYC apartment on The Real Housewives of New York. But during Fashion Week, LuAnn opened her doors to SheKnows for an exclusive tour and mini fashion show.

LuAnn’s dress line

LuAnn de Lesseps

Though the line is still in the works, we got a sneak peek at LuAnn’s latest project: a stylish, sexy dress line for women. The Countess describes the line as "affordable, elegant and easy."

"I’m very excited," LuAnn told SheKnows. "Women ask me how I always look right for the occasion, so I want to share all that experience which has taken me years to learn. It doesn’t always come that easily and I think it takes practice."

LuAnn’s pieces are all versatile, great for taking from day to night and easy to travel with. She anticipates they will retail for about $100-$150, an accessible price for many women. And the cuts are meant to flatter all body types.

"I love clothes that are simple and that are complementary," said LuAnn. "I love the shape because I think it flatters every woman. I think it’s really important for women to feel comfortable and not feel like you have to pull down your skirt."

But just because the pieces are conservative doesn’t mean they’re not eye-catching.

"Even though you’re a mother, you can still look fabulous."

"Even though you’re a mother, you can still look fabulous," said LuAnn. "You want your hem to be at a certain length at a certain point in your life, and the neck has to be just right and not showing too much. But the notion of mystery, I think, is very sexy."

All about the accessories

She says she also plans to make cardigans and capes to go along with the dresses, as well as an accessories line.

"I want to have statement pieces that really take your dress from day to night," she told us. "I’ve decided to work on a collection of jewelry from all the pieces I’ve collected from all over the world."

LuAnn de Lesseps's living room

LuAnn’s dresses weren’t the only stylish things we saw on our visit though; her entire apartment exudes elegance. The 1920s art deco high-rise, that she shares with her boyfriend Jacques Azoulay, is decorated immaculately with chic accents of red and zebra-print.

LuAnn says she and Jacques are "great," still trying for baby >>

"I wanted to keep it simple, chic and elegant," said LuAnn. "I had a designer who helped me pick pieces and we decorated the apartment together."

RHONY style

As she showed us her home, the conversation turned to her co-stars and the Countess filled us in on what she thinks of the other New York Housewives’ styles.

"I think Aviva is very stylish," said LuAnn when asked who on the show is the best dressed .

"I think Aviva is very stylish."

As for co-stars Ramona Singer and Sonja Morgan, LuAnn told us "Ramona seems to like the very shiny materials and it’s a totally different taste [than my own]. Sonia loves the feathers and bustier style. They definitely have their own style."

Aviva Drescher and LuAnn

Family

In addition to turning heads in her glamorous outfits on Housewives, LuAnn is also a full time mom to daughter Victoria and son Noel.

Victoria recently started art school and sells her prints on her website, VDL Artwork. Noel is also quite the entrepreneur with his own skateboard line, Fancy Fool.

"I'm so proud of them," LuAnn told SheKnows. "We have a great relationship."

For more on LuAnn de Lesseps' fabulous life, be sure to catch her every Monday night on Bravo on The Real Housewives of New York. And look for her dress line, expected to hit the market in Spring.

As Ulta's Fashion Week ambassador, Kelly Bensimon sat front row at Fashion Week and also got to hang backstage to scope out some model behavior beauty tips. While waiting for Whitney Eve to start, SheKnows had a fashion chat with Kelly and she even sent us a special message before we caught up with her backstage.

SheKnows: What do you think are the top beauty trends for spring 2013?

Kelly brand picks: Urban Decay, Too Faced, Benefit. Watch all of Kelly and Ulta's backstage Fashion Week videos on their YouTube channel!

Kelly: Mascara, colored eyeliner, blush tones in makeup, soft green, pale mauve, soft gray for nails or nail graffiti. Some of my favorite makeup trends have been the bright blues like Song from Zoya. It's the new red. I am also obsessed with Maybelline Baby Lips which makes your lips kissable, and with the palettes of Too Faced. Lastly, your smoky eye becomes even more alluring with the naked 2palette by Urban Decay.

Carlos Miele -- NY Fashion Week -- 2012 -- Spring/SummerSheKnows: What trends and designers stood out to you last week?

Kelly: The biggest trend for S/S13 is the colorway. There are a lot of blush tones in the clothes for spring '13. Femininity is definitely a strong trend, as is the ultimate American old guard girl look.

SheKnows: What do you think of all the fun prints we’re seeing?

Kelly: We've seen a lot of prints. When I was at Carlos Miele , it was a jungle sensation which was so much fun. Whitney Port [also] has fun with prints and it's definitely exciting to see that playfulness for spring.

Go backstage with Whitney Port >>

SheKnows: What were your top three favorite shows?

Kelly: I call it the Kelly season because it's everything I love! I loved Jill Stuart and I wear a lot of her clothes. I loved the pale palette and longer skirts. I was honestly the most surprised by Dennis Basso's uber glamorous gowns, especially in cobalt blue.

Mascara pick: Benefit's They're Real. Kelly says, "It's my all-time favorite mascara. It makes your eyes look like Bambi and everyone is like 'who's that girl?'"

They're Real mascaraSheKnows: What trends are you most excited to try?

Kelly: I'm really excited to try the softer eye. As you can see from the pictures of me this week, there's been a lot of smoky eye, but I'm kind of excited to let the smoky eye have a little breather and hibernate for a while.

Seriously, what's the secret to the perfect blow out?

Nick Penna from the award-winning hair salon SalonCapri in Boston is going to help us bring on cool dos after the summer heat. Plus, we grilled him with the never-ending question: "How do you get a salon quality blow from home?"

Hairstyle tips
Nick Penna gives fall hairstyle tips

1 hair guru, 5 hairstyle queries

Nick Penna from SalonCapri in Boston answered five burning beauty questions to help us prep for fall hairstyles and hair care.

Most importantly, we grilled him with the never-ending question: "How do you get a salon quality blow out from home?" He answers with precision below!

SheKnows: Do you have any secret tricks to prepare hair for the cold temps of fall and winter?

Penna: Pick up a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner for the winter months, preferably one with vitamins and oils. I suggest L’Oreal Professionnel’s Serie Expert Liss Ultime shampoo and conditioner. Keeping hair moisturized is essential for battling the winter elements and keeping static at a minimum. It’s good to change up the product you use every few months so your hair doesn’t build up immunity to the ingredients.

"Argan oil contains fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants that restore natural luster."

I also recommend investing in a hair oil. One of the hottest new trends is incorporating argan oil into your beauty routine. Argan oil contains fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants that restore your hair’s natural luster without a greasy shine.

Use about a dime sized amount and comb it evenly through damp hair. Or, look for a conditioning treatment that contains argan oil like Shu Uemura’s Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment.

We also love Josie Maran's argan oil line >>

Another way to prepare hair is getting a trim at the beginning of the winter season. Ridding yourself of split ends will make your hair look and feel healthier and ensure that all the protective measures you’re taking are not in vain.

SheKnows: If someone wants a change without doing anything too drastic, what cuts would you recommend for fall?

Penna: Bangs are very adaptable -- blunt or side swept, you can always play around with them to fit your face shape and style. Not to mention, most salons give complimentary bang trims, so you’re getting a whole new look for free!

SheKnows: Seriously, what’s the trick to giving your hair the perfect blow out at home?

Penna: Don’t rush it. Quickly blow drying hair will create frizzy, shapeless hair. Always prep your hair with a moisturizing product to protect your hair -- for a smooth look, try Shu Uemura’s White Tea Polishing Milk. If you want a little more bounce and volume, use a light mousse.

Next, get your locks ready by blow drying and tousling your hair at the same time. When you begin styling, attach a concentrator nozzle to your hair dryer and start on the under most layers of your hair, using a round brush to dry 1-inch sections.

hot tip

Your hair dryer should be set to high heat -- drying your hair at a low heat means you will need to go over the same section repeatedly, resulting in more damage to your hair.

Once you have completely dried your whole head, smooth out the look with a dime sized amount of hair oil to tame any fly aways and also replenish your hair’s moisture and shine.

SheKnows: For the working girl/busy mom, what are some easy hairstyles that still turn heads?

Penna: When rushed with time, any type of side chignon is a stylish look that is easily accomplished while achieving an elegant appearance.

Shu Uemura Volume Maker hair product
TIP: Use this hair powder brush! See left.

The sock-bun is another head-turner style that creates the ultimate sophisticated working girl look and can be formed within a few minutes.

How to make a sock bun >>

SheKnows: Product recommendations for fall?

Penna: Shu Uemura Volume Maker is an amazing product that adds gorgeous volume to hair. You can use it like a dry shampoo or to add extra volume to targeted spots after a blow dry. A little goes a long way!
