hot or not

We all can relate — there are hideous outfits from our past that we wish to never see again. Let's help our teens out by teaching them to never make these mistakes.

How to redefine
the worst outfits

Demi Lovato: Risk taker

Demi Lovato: Risk Taker

While Demi is choosing to express herself in a different way than her peers, there is a time and a place to experiment with new fashion. Her high ponytail and dramatic dress would fit better at a fashion event instead of the Teen Choice Awards. Demi should take a cue from her bestie Selena Gomez and wear something simple, yet becoming. Having your teen express themselves through clothing is a great thing, but make sure they are appropriate for the event.

Miley Cyrus: Trendsetter

Miley Cyrus: Trendsetter

Here Miley gives her take on a high-low dress, but it seems to be a bit too high and too low. If your teen wants to be trendy, because being a fashionista requires that, have them try a trend that is modest and not too dramatic. Try finding a much more appropriate high-low skirt and pair it with a cute tank, and they are set for loads of compliments.

Danielle Doty: Edgy flare

Danielle Doty: Edgy Flare

Although Danielle Doty won the title of Miss Teen USA, she is trying a bit too hard to be a rocker queen. Being edgy and original is important to teens and makes them feel cool. Doty could afford to switch her skimpy skirt for red skinny jeans. To go with the rocker theme, switch out the high-knee boots for some sparkly Toms. Keep the classic leather jacket, but ditch the chunky jewelry to make the outfit more accessible for just about anywhere, including school.

Ashley Greene: Grown-up look

Ashley Greene: Grownup Look

If your teen wants to show off their sophisticated side, make sure they wear something figure flattering. Although Greene looks super chic, her white top drapes too far down and lands on the widest part of her hips. Learning what works for your body type is a key part of growing up, so when wearing an outfit such as Greene's, make sure they tuck in the top to flatter their legs. A high-wasted skirt of any kind flatters most body types, and adding a basic tank top with simply jewelry will make your teen look super chic and fancy.

Jennette McCurdy: Casual cool

Jennette McCurdy: Casual-cool

Teens will most likely want to dress causal, but wearing something frumpy and mismatched like Jennette McCurdy just isn’t cool. Basic white skinny jeans and a fitted T-shirt are as casual-cool as it can get. Pairing matching Converse sneakers or patterned flats with the outfit will complete the look. The best thing about this outfit is it can be dressed up by adding cute bangles and wedges. Giving your teen options with outfits will help them to learn what their own style truly is.

Collars are all the rage right now: whether they be a peter pan collar on your shirt, a standalone collar that you can layer or a necklace in the shape of a collar. There are so many ways to get in on this trend that you've undoubtedly spotted on everyone from your friends at school to your favorite Hollywood starlet. One way to translate the collar trend onto nails is by spicing up an old favorite: painting the moon of your nails. But this way, instead of a painting a half-circle moon, you're going to make it a collar for the top of your nail.

Denim trends for teens

Being a teen means embracing being young. Mixing colors and playing with shapes is all part of the game. But even young women have difficulty choosing the right pair of jeans. However, with so many fun and funky denim trends this season, there's no need to feel dowdy or down. Check out these adorable denim trends for your teen.
Fearne Cotton wearing pink jeans
Emma Roberts wearing high-waisted jeans
Kim Kardashian wearing trouser jeans

Skinnies

Don't expect this trend to go away anytime soon. The perfect pair of skinnies look great paired with flats or wedges, fit perfectly under boots and make slimmer figures look curvy and beautiful. Look for a pair with a good deal of stretch in them to hug the booty and make hips look slim. Get a dark wash to sophisticate your wardrobe, and then pair it with any of your favorite blouses for an instant dressed-up casual look. You can even slip them under your favorite summer dress during those cool fall months.

Bright colors

This is a recurring trend over the last few years that just won't die — and for good reason. Bright pops of color on the lower half of the body can be great ways to casually bring color into a wardrobe. Pair a mustard pair of skinnies with a navy-and-white striped cardigan for a smart fall look, or hit the town in a daring pair of cobalt blues. Cheer up a drab, neutral winter wardrobe and embrace your colorful side through each season.

High waisted

Jeans have a tendency to look relaxed and causal, but sometimes you just want to be comfortable while looking classy. High-waisted jeans are a retro look that emphasizes small waistlines while looking utterly timeless. Pair them with a flowy blouse and large ornate earrings for a throwback to the '70s without going full-blown hippie.

Curvy fits

Teens are slowly growing into their womanly bodies. If those hips are expanding, show off a womanly figure with curvy cut jeans like Levi's Curve ID, $58 at Kohl's. They sit just below the hips to flatter and form a modern silhouette and have enough stretch to hug the booty without looking vulgar. Plus, these fits come in both skinny and flared versions for updated and classic looks.

Trouser jeans

They're all of the timelessness of a trouser mixed with the casual sensibility of a jean. Trouser jeans are great for date night or a laid-back college interview and look great paired with everything from sandals to booties.

5 Ways to find teen style

We all have one — that dreaded yearbook photo featuring braces, fluffy bangs, a bad perm and a tie-dye T-shirt. The teen years can be an awkward stage, especially when it comes to fashion and style. So how can you help your teen better express themselves? Four fashion bloggers weigh in on how to help teens find their own fashion sense.

Let teens experiment with fashion

For stylist and fashion blogger Christine Bibbo Herr, the teen years were a time of fashion experimentation.

"For as long as I can remember, I always loved fashion and never really stuck to one style," Bibbo Herr says. "I spent a lot of time experimenting with new trends or playing around with the funky looks in the '80s, like tie-dye and studs."

Instead of conforming to a particular look, Bibbo Herr preferred to try different styles depending on the situation or her mood.

"At that age, you're still trying to define yourself, and for the most part I wasn't ready to be categorized into a specific personality," she says. "So there would be days when I felt strong and loved wearing my leather bomber jackets and distressed jeans and boots. Then there would be days I would go for a more feminine look and was just as happy mixing things up with high-tops and fun belts and accessories."

Poll: Which former teen fashion trend would you like to

Let them make mistakes

For many teens, the high school years are full of more fashion "don'ts" than "do's." Beauty and style writer Aly Walansky can attest to that.

"When I was a teen, I was very overweight. I tended to hide in my clothes, using the tight jeans and big top approach. The result? I probably looked bigger than I was!" Walansky says.

Walansky, who describes her typical high-school outfit as "almost all black," says she'd rather forget several of her teenage fashion phases, including teased bangs, her Blossom hat and the menswear fad.

Bibbo Herr recalls a few of her own trendy teenage moments.

"I think the whole Madonna look with the multiple bangles and tying your hair up with tights always brought a sense of fun," she says, "but I would probably love to forget ever having tried the MC Hammer-style parachute pants!"

According to blogger and fashion consultant Cara Chace, there are some trends that should never be repeated.

"Growing up in the '80s and '90s, I experienced the bad home perm, lots of neon, slap bracelets and those circle/knot/tie thingys you'd put the corner of your T-shirt through — all trends better left in the past."

Let them be an individual

As Walansky and Bibbo Herr point out, the teenage years are a time for fashion experimentation. Unfortunately for Chace, she didn't get that opportunity while growing up.

"I was the second girl of my siblings growing up, and as such was relegated to the curse of the hand-me-downs for most of my formative years," she explains. "The problem with that was my sister and I were like night and day with completely different styles."

While Chace's sister gravitated toward the "ballerina/flowers/lace look," Chace found herself attracted to more rock-and-roll styles and a Katharine Hepburn look.

Teen girl with gothic styleDon't freak out

If you're worried about your teen's new goth wardrobe or miniskirt obsession, take a deep breath. There's a good chance your teen is experimenting with fashion as they search for themselves.

"Teenagers are at that stage when they're trying to define themselves, so I wouldn't stress too much if they're trying out looks that you're not sure are right for them," Bibbo Herr says. "Chances are they will change their minds more times than you can count."

Before you forbid your teen from wearing something, think twice. As Bibbo Herr points out, "The more you forbid them things, the more likely they are to do it."

Instead, she suggests looking at fashion as a way to let them be creative and use their imagination.

"You can use it as a way of bonding closer with them by trying to understand how they want to express themselves and find fun ways you can share in the process without strictly imposing what you want — either through shopping or helping them with their wardrobes. That way they get to do what they want and you will have some way of setting boundaries if the look goes too wild or too far. It's great to be able to express yourself through fashion and have fun!"

Encourage fashion discovery

Helping your teen find their fashion sense can do wonders for their confidence, too. Host and fashion blogger Jessie Holeva recalls how finding her own style has made her more self-assured.

"I grew up without being able to afford all the 'cool clothes' and labels that everyone coveted. I'd wear fake designer bags, buy anything on sale if it was from a certain store, and my style wasn't mine," she says. "Since blogging, I've been able to play more with fashion and try out new things without worrying I stood out. Now, I own the fact that my favorite necklace is from Forever 21, and I'd rather shop my friend's closet than drop lots of cash to wear something only a few times."

"I now know how to dress for my body — and know what looks best on me  — and the importance of simply wearing clothes that fit."

Walansky learned a lot about style from her teen years, too. "I now know how to dress for my body — and know what looks best on me  — and the importance of simply wearing clothes that fit.”

Chace says her style has also evolved since her teen years, though she hasn't forgotten her past, either.

"[My style] evolved to blend my rock-and-roll look with classic shapes and tailoring ," she says. "While I occasionally enjoy the girly look, my style is still distinctly 'me' with roots in my teenage style rebellion."

By participating in your teens' fashion discovery, you'll play an integral role in building their sense of self and self-expression.

As Walansky points out, it's also important to let them have their growing pains.

"Just like we'll date the bad boys before the right one comes along, we'll 'date' a lot of really bad styles before we find the one we love!" she says.

Boots and dresses for fall

Boots and a dress can be a tricky look to get right. Which boots look best with which dresses? Should you opt for heels or flats? No matter what questions you might have about pairing fall’s best boots with your go-to dresses, we’re here to help you master the trend.

Boots and dresses: Tips to consider

If you’re stumped on how best to work the boots and dresses trend, we’ve listed some simple style rules to keep in mind.

  1. Ankle boots and long or midi-length dresses are a great option for fall.
  2. Leave some skin showing. You should be able to tell where the dress ends and the boots start.
  3. Don’t be afraid to add patterned tights to your look. Heavier fall boots lend themselves well to sassier legwear.
  4. Sweater dresses were made for boots, especially slouchy or motorcycle styles.
  5. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try out a few different styles of boots with various dresses to see what works best and what you love most.

4 Cool looks we love

This actress is hot, hot, hot!

We're sitting down with Teri Reeves, one of the stars of NBC's newest drama series Chicago Fire, to chat about her beauty must-haves, how she stays so fit and what it's like moving from LA to Chicago.

SheKnows: We're so excited about your new show! Tell me a little about your character on Chicago Fire.

Teri Reeves: I play Dr. Hallie Casey, a resident in the ER. My relationship with Matthew is the romantic drama of the show. Hallie's one of those women that you look at on paper and aren’t necessarily supposed to root for. She comes from wealth, but it comes out she's really down to earth and she fights for what she believes in and what she loves. She's warm and generous; she's like the woman I would like to be.

SheKnows: All of the women on the show play strong roles. You're in the ER and the other two women are paramedics. Was it important for you to be in a cast of strong women?

Teri Reeves in Chicago Fire

Reeves: That’s really the gift when that opportunity comes up. Being in a Dick Wolf show always is [like] that. It’s lovely to be surrounded by strong women on the set. The story [revolves around] an engine house in Chicago that has firefighters, squad rescue and an EMT crew. The women are just as involved in the action and they rescue people on the show every day while dealing with their real life at-home drama. My character focuses more on my relationship with Matthew at the moment. It’s more about how his home life is affected by his work and vice versa.

SheKnows: When on a drama of this nature, it seems like you'd have little time to fuss over hair and makeup. What are beauty essentials you have to have with you while on-set?

Reeves: I have very oily skin so I start with Proactiv moisturizer and my makeup artist has Colorescience powder and blotting papers which also help with oil control. Chicago air is sort of dry, so I always have Fresh Sugar lip balm with me. It’s got SPF and it's great!

Teri Reeves in Chicago FireSheKnows: Working in Chicago during the summer isn't only dry but also quite humid. Did you have to change your beauty routine at all?

Reeves: The humidity really affects my hair. I have wavy hair and the curls keep falling out! My go-to product is Goldwell Style Sign 3 Hot Form Heat Styling Lotion. It's the best!

SheKnows: Speaking of your hair, it's gorgeous! How do you keep it so shiny and healthy?

Reeves: I don't dye my hair and I get it cut every six to eight weeks. I use all Aveda hair products. Their damage remedy is great! I have wavy hair, but it doesn't have a lot of body at the roots, so I also use their Pure Abundance hair potion to give my roots some lift.

SheKnows: Let's talk style. How does your style compare to the style of your character Hallie?

Reeves: Most of the time she’s in scrubs, but when she’s in regular clothes, she’s in skinny jeans which I’m shy about in real life. I like flare jeans because I have hips and a butt! Flare jeans distract from my round middle. But Hallie wears skinny jeans paired with tall boots; she’s not shy. She’s also very classy. She wears adult clothes, and I like a little more edge and roughness.

Cast of Chicago FireSheKnows: We think you look great in skinny jeans! And you're so active. What are your favorite ways to stay in shape?

Reeves: I do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu five times a week, yoga three times a week and I jog along Lake Michigan in Chicago. That's my regimen! I do something every day; I don't like to get bored. I love working out and living in Chicago. There's so much to do, and it's a beautiful city with really nice people and great food.

SheKnows: Jesse Spencer, who plays your husband on Chicago Fire, is a hottie! We have to know, what’s it like working with all of these hunky fireman?

Reeves: They’ve become like brothers, but there are moments I forget that and become very distracted and have to look away. They’re the loveliest of guys. It’s not a rough day usually when I’m on set with them!

Thanks so much, Teri. We can't wait to see the first episode! Be sure to catch the series premiere of Chicago Fire Oct. 10 at 10 p.m. on NBC.

The well-dressed woman's guide to packing a suitcase

Behind every good looking, well-dressed woman is an amazing closet, and sometimes, more likely than not, a perfectly packed suitcase.
Woman with suitcase

Behind every good looking, well-dressed woman is an amazing closet, and sometimes, more likely than not, a perfectly packed suitcase.

Perfectly packed
and ready

The majority of the women I know, be it friends or clients, spend a ton of time on the road. Knowing how to pack a suitcase, from essentials to expendables, is as important as knowing the perfect mixture of brownies and ice cream for girls'-night-in!

Leggings from Hue

Here are a couple of travel tips I can offer you that might make your suitcase slightly more organized -- and absolutely more versatile!

Leggings

Always pack at least one pair of leggings! They're perfect for an amazing pair of heels for a fun evening out, while at the same time adorable with sandals or flip flops for a casual day with family or friends. Either way, leggings are an absolute essential! And they take up little to no room in your bag! The website www.hue.com has every pair of leggings you could ever imagine!

color block maxi dress from River IslandFun maxi day/night dress

It's so important, not only for your suitcase but for your entire wardrobe, that you have that versatile dress that can do afternoon and evening with just the change of your heels and some accessories. I always try to pack two dresses with this in mind. It saves space and it's also super fun making the transition from one look to the next! Try this color block maxi dress from River Island .

ream and tan leather pumpHeels

You ALWAYS have to have that one pair of amazing heels! Again it doesn’t matter if you're pairing them with those fun leggings or the maxi dress -- one pair of heels is just as important as the flip flops you will most likely be rocking all day! They always add fabulous to your ensemble, are super fun and give you a boost of self-confidence! I love these cream and tan leather pumps from Zeyzani!

Blue Garden classic candleAn amazing candle

I never leave home without one! I find candles to be super soothing! It is rare that I do not pack one for myself or for a client. They can give you that little extra bit of relaxation you need to end that hard day on the road! Nest Candles are my go-to! So many amazing scents and very fairly priced for what I would describe as the key to a calming evening! Try their Blue Garden classic candle, $32 at Nordstrom. Blue hydrangea, hyacinth and forget-me-nots are blended with fresh green notes and a dew drop accord to create the aroma of a lush floral garden. Housed in blue translucent glass, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this candle will be donated to Autism Speaks.

Banana Republic blouseThe perfect button down blouse

The perfect fitted button down blouse, like this one from Banana Republic , is always a key essential to smart packing! This is also an item that has a dual function! It can be worn during the day with a fun fall skirt for shopping and just hanging out. In the evening it can be paired with the perfect pencil skirt or dress pants for a more formal look.

More tips to ease the packing process

  • Always roll your clothing instead of folding. It saves space and keeps your clothing wrinkle free!
  • Pack your socks and underwear in your shoes. Always a great space saver!
  • Pack your accessories in plastic zip top bags. It protects them from any spilling that might happen during the trip. It also keeps them from getting tangled or caught on your clothing.

Hello SK Style Watchers! When you think of blouses, what comes to mind? Maybe that they've been around for eons, and that they're usually pretty typical and basic, right? Well this fall, blouses have been reinvented, and today I'm going to show you the new and improved options out there!

Beyond your basic blouse!

Hello SK Style Watchers! When you think of blouses, what comes to mind? Maybe that they've been around for eons, and that they're usually pretty typical and basic, right? Well this fall, blouses have been reinvented, and today I'm going to show you the new and improved options out there!

Trendspotting: New & improved: Blouses for fall 2012

What I love about this new crop of blouses is that they instantly add major style to your look. They're easily paired with another favorite of the season -- a pencil skirt -- or if you're more daring, how about a pair of leather leggings? No matter how you choose to wear them, the end result is always gorgeous! Today I'm going to talk about three of my new blouse favorites, because you guessed it, this is my pick as trend of the week!

All of the blouses I'm showing you today are by Aryn K, including the fabulous one that I'm wearing.

Trendspotting with Jill Laine: Fall blouses

This fall blouses have been reinvented, and today Jill is going to show you the new and improved options out there for you!

Our pick: DVF Joanne Blouse

Metallics

A favorite of vintage '80s style lovers, metallic patterns are a great choice when mixed with vibrant colors. Just a little touch of gold, bronze or silver really adds a big pop to an otherwise expected top. This shape is so flattering too, with the stylized peplum here at the bottom which will accentuate your shape yet loosely flow over any areas of extra goodness, as I like to call it, that you want to hide.

Our pick: DVF Joanne Blouse

Our pick: Faux Leather Collar Lace Top

Leather piping

Unless you've been living in a cave, you know that leather is huge for this season! Expect to see many blouses with leather piping or collars, just enough to add a bit of masculine flair to your look. This blouse is boxy and voluminous, so you'll want to pair it with a fitted bottom, like skinny jeans or leather shorts and tights.

Our pick: Faux Leather Collar Lace Top

Our pick: Cut Out Top

Cut outs

This is definitely one of the trends I'm looking most forward to with blouses this season. While the front of the blouse is straightforward, the cut-outs are flirty, sexy and unexpected. A quick tip for dressing sexy is to pick one area to show off, and you'll never look like you've tried too hard.

Now just because these have the cut outs, don't dismiss these for the office. They can be worn with a little jacket or cardigan from nine to five and then on their own for any after-hours fun.

Our pick: Cut Out Top

next week

So there you have it, SK Style Watchers! My three favorite blouses to get your hands on, ASAP. Leave me a comment below -- I'd love to hear which is your favorite. And next week, I'll be talking about the new fabulous prints that you can look forward to wearing this season! Thanks for watching, and for SheKnows Style, I'm Jill Laine.

5 Skin cleansing mistakes you could be making

Washing your face is easy right? Technically, yes. But there are a few dos and don’ts to consider as you sidle up to the sink. To really get your skin squeaky clean, avoid the following common cleansing mistakes.
Woman washing face

Washing your face is easy right? Technically, yes. But there are a few dos and don’ts to consider as you sidle up to the sink. To really get your skin squeaky clean, avoid the following common cleansing mistakes.

Skin care don'ts

Over-cleansing

You might not think it’s possible for your face to be too clean, but excessive cleansing can cause more harm than good. Cleansing your skin more than twice a day can strip your skin of its natural oils and actually cause your skin to produce more oil -- no thanks. Rather than risk drying out your complexion, stick to cleansing in the morning and before bed.

Make a note

If you have particularly dry skin, you can get away with simply rinsing your face or going over it lightly with a damp washcloth in the a.m., rather than using a cleansing product.

Picking the best-smelling product

We’re all guilty of wanting the products that smell the best. Fruity? Spicy? Minty? Bring it on! But the problem with many yummy-smelling cleansers is that they’re full of unnatural or synthetic fragrance, which can irritate your skin and cause a whole host of complexion problems. If your skin is sensitive or prone to irritation, choose unscented products or those that derive their scent from natural fragrance, versus chemicals.

Not leaving the cleanser on your skin long enough

If your cleanser claims to do something specific, like zap zits, calm skin or moisturize, the only way you’ll get the benefits is to allow the active ingredients to do their job. Rather than quickly wash and immediately rinse, work the cleanser around your face slowly using small circular motions, wait 30 to 45 seconds and then rinse.

Washing your face before your hair

Prone to breakouts along your hairline? Your shampoo and conditioner could be to blame. Keep skin clear by washing your face after you wash your hair. That way you’ll be sure no residue from your hair care products is left on your skin, which can clog pores and cause blemishes.

Using the wrong temperature water

Cold water might wake you up and hot water might feel good, but the key to a well-cleansed face is to find a balance. The water should never be hot, which can dry out your skin, or ice cold, which won’t allow your pores to open. Wash your face in warm water for optimum results.

It was time to take a look at the market for shapewear and what I discovered was that it's so much more than Spanx. In reality, women have been wearing shapewear garments for centuries, and since Spanx has paved the way for body shaping brands to double as trendy items and the ultimate fashion accessory, here are three other brands that will help you look fabulous in clothes you never thought you could flaunt. There's no shame in shaping here.

It was time to take a look at the market for shapewear and what I discovered was that it's so much more than Spanx!

ResultWear by dMondaine

The Marilyn Slip marks shapewear as more than some garment women wear to hide their muffin top. Better put, this slip is a styling tool used by celebrities with "perfect" bodies. They may be in great shape, but even they need help to make sure they look their best in the beautiful gowns and cocktail dresses that make up evening wear. As the ultimate celebrity styling tool, it can work for you too, whether you need to control your curves or give them a little boost.

Layla body shaperHouse of Layla

For all the new mommies out there who are feeling blessed with a new little one, but not so much about the newfound 10 pounds in the abdomen region, House of Layla can help give love and support to your new baby in style. In what seems like a perfect world, this piece will do more than just compress your body fat into your skinny jeans. The Neuro Bands are placed to promote natural, neuro-muscular responses and are designed to make your muscles work for a perfect posture while the fibers in the fabric produce just enough heat to invigorate your body to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Lysse Leggings Lysse Leggings

At the heart of this brand is the need to get rid of the muffin top. Just in time for fall, Lysse Leggings has come out with some on-trend leggings that feature pops of pleather and fit in perfectly with the equestrian look that has found a way into our wardrobes. Since leggings themselves have been welcomed as thee comfy go-to style, Lysse Leggings happily solves the issue of the ill-fitting style that often comes with this semi-new staple.

ResultWear Style Guide

ResultWear designer Kiana Anvaripour describes how to wear ResultWear and offers styling tips. ResultWear is beautiful shapewear that lifts, shapes, and creates a smooth silhouette, all without the need of a bra or underwire. The patent-pending collection features smoothing, contoured bands and breathable performance fabrics that smooth, firm and shape problem areas while enhancing a woman's best assets.

Bring on the fall bling: Seasonal jewelry picks

We admit it -- we’re a bit obsessed with this season’s crop of jewelery and we’re already coveting quite a few pieces. For the sake of space , we narrowed down our picks to five stylish items we can’t wait to wear.

Tory Burch statement necklace

Chain gang

Any plain shirt or sweater will get a style boost with this dramatic Tory Burch statement necklace made from graduated resin links . We’ll be wearing this versatile piece to the office over a simple shift or with a white blouse and pencil skirt to add some sophisticated edge to our at-work look.

fall-inspired brass cuff

Leafy love

We couldn’t resist this adorable, fall-inspired brass cuff made to look like a tangle of leaves . While it could have gone the direction of too-cute, the detailed bracelet actually makes a stylish addition to any outfit, whether you’re wearing jeans and a slouchy sweater or tailored trousers and a blazer.

intricate pink-tone bronze ring

Chic cut outs

Of all the jewelry out there, rings are our biggest weakness when it comes to bling. We have a collection that’s getting bigger by the season, but we’ll still be adding this intricate pink-tone bronze ring featuring geometric cut outs to our list of fall favorites . Inspired by Moroccan architecture, it’s chic, elegant and perfect for a night out.

drop earrings

Ode to art deco

The nod to art deco design in fashion started a few seasons ago, but it doesn’t seem to be letting up –- and we’re OK with that. We’re currently coveting this fun pair of drop earrings with an art deco twist. They boast a bright coral center, polished spikes and a unique door-knocker design .

Brooch beauty

Brooches are another easy way to add interest to neutral items, and if you haven’t embraced them yet, this is the season to do it. We love this vintage-inspired bronze pin with an eye-catching crystal center . The pretty piece would look great pinned to a pea coat, blazer or denim jacket.

BB Bandwagon: 5 BB creams to try

$

BB Cream, or “Beauty Balm” as it’s also known, is everywhere. The product du jour is basically a multitasking tinted moisturizer. They offer hydration with a tint but can also include SPF, primer, anti-aging or blemish-busting ingredients and other features that work to even skin tone and minimize pores. With so many BB creams on the market, it can be hard to choose, but we’ve rounded up some of our favorites.

Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector

Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector

Speed up your morning routine by smoothing on this lightweight BB cream . Garnier’s version of the must-have product offers SPF 15, goes on easily, hydrates and evens tone. The coverage is less than what you’d get with foundation, but more than your average tinted moisturizer.

Too Faced Beauty Balm Multi-Benefit Skin Care Makeup

Too Faced Beauty Balm Multi-Benefit Skin Care Makeup

We like this BB cream for its light-diffusing pigments that help give skin a subtle glow -- not to mention the oil-free hydration, anti-aging properties and skin-nourishing ingredients such as vitamins A and E and chamomile. It offers just enough color to even tone, but you can also use it as a primer to prep skin for foundation if you need more coverage.

Boscia BB Cream SPF 27

Boscia BB Cream SPF 27

If you’re looking for something that goes on easily with a smooth finish, Boscia’s BB cream is for you. We love the fact that it's long-wearing and even which keeps us looking fresh through to post-work drinks. Coverage is sheer, but it manages to even tone and minimize pores, which makes us happy. There’s only one shade, but it adjusts to your skin tone upon application.

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35

Are you ready for your close-up? You will be after using this ultra-hydrating and skin- perfecting cream . A little goes a long way with this one , but it evens tone, minimizes shine, moisturizes and protects against sun damage with SPF 35. Use this alone or as a primer depending on how much coverage you need.

Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm

While most BB creams are meant to provide enough coverage to forgo foundation, this one acts more as a primer, albeit a super-powered primer . When they say 10-in-1, they aren’t kidding around. This BB cream reduces pore size, controls shine, minimizes fine lines and skin imperfections and contains all kinds of skin-nourishing ingredients to fight the signs of aging and keep skin healthy.

6 Ways to wear the jewel tone trend

$

Sapphire, ruby, garnet and emerald aren’t just meant for pricey baubles. This season, rich, dramatic jewel tones are a must for more than rings and necklaces. Shop the trend with our tips for what to buy and how best to wear it.

faux leather handbag

Over your shoulder

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the jewel tone trend into your wardrobe is with an accessory like this retro-inspired faux leather handbag in a get-noticed garnet hue . We fell instantly in love with the rich color and go-anywhere style that’s perfect for everything from a day at the office to a night on the town.

Tory Burch pumps t

On your feet

Escape the mundane and give your feet something to look forward to by adding this pair of dark malachite green Tory Burch pumps to your fall footwear collection . The classic heel is done in chic snake-print leather that gives the ladylike shoe a decidedly edgy twist. Pair with sleek black trousers or a gray pencil skirt to give office wear a boost.

Purple tights

On your legs

Nothing adds interest to a basic or neutral dress like the right tights. We’re currently coveting this pair in a sumptuous shade of purple . The jewel-hued semi-sheer tights are covered in mini triangles and would look great with anything from a charcoal sweater dress to a midi-length pleated skirt.

statement earrings

In your ears

Trade studs or hoops for a pair of these sapphire-hued, hand painted statement earrings in the shape of long, elegant leaves . The stately shade gives these earrings an air of elegance and grace perfect for elevating anything from your favorite cocktail frock to a business meeting ensemble.

Essie’s Dive Bar

On your nails

What better place to show off your penchant for this season's must-try palette than with a fall-ready mani? We are in love with Essie’s Dive Bar, a rich blue-green hue with a hint of shimmer . As the weather cools down, nail colors get darker and this jewel-inspired hue is a great way to transition your look for a new season.

boho-chic wooden bangles

On your arms

Make a fun fall statement with a stylish stack of boho-chic wooden bangles on your arm in a deep yet pretty plum . The varying widths of the bangles make for an eye-catching accessory when worn all together, but one or two at a time looks equally chic.

Show your lips some seasonal love this fall with our picks for some of the best glosses, stains and lipsticks in our favorite fall-ready hues.

Get glossy

Glosses are great for those days when you just want to leave makeup to a minimum, but still brighten up your complexion and feel a little brighter overall. Whether you’re out on a date, at the office or meeting friends for lunch, touching up with a simple swipe is a great way to freshen up. Check out our top picks for fall:

Bobbi Brown Rich Color Gloss in Ruby Red

Bobbi Brown Rich Color Gloss in Ruby Red , a bright red perfect for the season. Not to mention, red never really goes out of style.

Lorac Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Sheer Luxe

Lorac Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Sheer Luxe , a rich, brandy-wine hue. We love this one for its long-lasting shine.

Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss in Black Hone

Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss in Black Honey , a fall-ready shade of blackberry.

Lipstick love

One of the best ways to freshen up your makeup look is to add a new lipstick to your beauty arsenal every season. Since fall is here, we suggest treating yourself to a brand new hue that reflects the cooler weather. We rounded up some of the colors we’re currently crushing on:

Joe Fresh Shine Lipstick in Wine

Joe Fresh Shine Lipstick in Wine , a shade that just seems to scream fall. Plus, the price point can’t be beat.

Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Amsterdam

Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Amsterdam , a pretty garnet red. We especially love how smooth this ultra-rich color goes on.

Sephora Collection Color Lip Last in All you need is red

Sephora Collection Color Lip Last in All You Need Is Red , a vibrant coral-red sure to brighten up any outfit this fall.

Super stains

Stains are one of our go-to makeup bag must-haves because they’re long-lasting and buildable in terms of coverage. They also provide color that never feels sticky or too heavy like some glosses and lipsticks can. This fall, go for shades with hints of wine, berry and rich reds. Just try not to swoon when you see which stains we’re swiping on this fall:

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Spirited

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Spirited , a seasonally stylish orange-red hue.

Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain in Flamenco

Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain in Flamenco , a luscious cherry red. Bonus: You can use this stuff on your cheeks, too.

Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Mocha

Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Mocha , a warm, chocolate-tinged pinky-brown.
