Exactly how to stack your rings like a pro

"The stacked ring trend is quite fabulous, especially when you're wanting to add more to your look but not necessarily a whole lot more," says celebrity wardrobe stylist Ali Levine. That being said, you don't want to go overboard and venture into Mr. T. territory (I pity the fool!). Like anything, ring stacking is a fine art. It will take some experimenting, so we got some pro tips to help you pull off the trend.

1. Keep it in the family

"If you're starting with a thin ring, keep in the same range," suggests Becca Aronson, co-founder of ADORNIA. "Three thin rings will look fantastic while still allowing for finger freedom." If you want to throw a thicker ring into the mix, make sure it's at the base of your finger — going the thin-to-thick route will make it look like your smaller rings are being squished (seriously, try it!).

2. Double (or triple) up

Try doubling (or even tripling!) up on the same piece, worn on adjacent fingers, for a multi-finger ring effect without the restriction.

3. Pay attention to how they fit together

"You can create some really interesting shapes mixing in a basic flat band with a curved or geometric-shaped ring," says Aronson.

4. Go bold, but not over the top

"Be sure to mix in visually lightweight rings along with your standout statement rings," says Gabrielle Hooks, founder of Lovely Hunt. If you pile on bold rings, you'll look like you're trying too hard. "Adding in thin, simple bands helps create the balanced look we're all aiming for."

5. Go for cohesive

Stick with one metal type instead of going with a haphazard mix of rose gold, sterling silver and copper. To keep the look from becoming too matchy-matchy, mix different finishes and textures.

6. Vary the ring placement

Start with heavier statement rings at the base of the finger and finish off with a petite midi ring.

7. Don't forget your nails

The whole point of the stackable ring look is to draw attention to your hands — in other words, nix the grubby nails. Make sure the nail color you choose balances out the look: "If your fingers are heavily adorned with jewelry and precious metals, it might be a good idea to balance this with a more neutral nail color," suggests Hooks.
