Celebrity mom Megan Fox: Steal her sexy style

$
0
0
Not many were surprised when Megan Fox was named the Sexiest Woman in the World back in 2008. And now five years later, Fox is still one of the hottest ladies in Hollywood. She's a little more grown up now, married to Brian Austin Green of 90210 fame and she's a mommy too. The couple had a son — Noah Shannon Green in September 2012.

Megan Fox

Though you might disagree that Megan Fox is one of the sexiest women in the world, you will have to agree that she has a unique sense of style. Fox is also well known for her collection of tattoos. Her many tattoos include a Shakespeare quote on her right shoulder, a poem on her ribs, a Marilyn Monroe portrait on her arm, her man's name at her bikini line and a star tattoo on her ankle.

Back in February 2008, Fox attended The Visual Effects Society Sixth Annual VES Awards in Hollywood wearing a black strapless top, polka dot skirt and gold pumps. Polka dots were in then, and they are still in now. Here's how you can steal her sexy look for a special night out.

Pretty in polka dots

Polka dot skirts

Snag the ivory and black polka dot pelmet skirt . If you are looking for something a little more mom-friendly , consider the longer polka dot chiffon pleated skirt instead.

Standout style

Black tops

Peplum styles are in right now and this Greylin sequin peplum strapless top is absolutely gorgeous. However if strapless isn't your style, look for something with a little more coverage. This batwing-sleeve metallic striped lace top may be the answer. It's sexy without being too revealing.

Gold and glamorous

Gold heels

Fox was wearing an incredible pair of gold Christian Louboutin pumps for the event. You can find an equally hot pair at a fraction of the price, such as these Paris Hilton gold croco pumps . If your tired mommy feet can't stand such high heels, you can still find a shimmery pair of shoes you'll love. Consider these Annie Sadie gold evening sandals . These elegant, jeweled shoes feature a heel that is under three inches and a padded footbed for extra comfort.

Celebrity mom Kelly Rutherford always looks fabulous -- on and off the screen. Next time you are going out on the town, ditch your little black dress and wear white -- like Kelly -- instead.

Kelly Rutherford

Kelly Rutherford, who you might know best as Lily van der Woodsen, the mother of Serena on Gossip Girl, always looks stylish and chic on the show and off. In real life, she's the mom of two young children and recently was one of our celeb mom video bloggers on Mommalogues.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get Kelly's look. Instead, choose your dress and accessories wisely.

White cocktail dress

Instead of a little black dress, how about a little white dress? A white cocktail dress is perfect for a spring or summer party. If you aren't going to wear the dress often, there's no need to spend a fortune. However, if it's going to be a staple in your wardrobe, go ahead and splurge.

Steal the look: Kelly Rutherford white dresses

Steal: Max and Cleo strapless front bow dress

Splurge: BCBGMAXAZRIA ruffled strapless dress

Glitzy jewelry

For a more affordable option to expensive diamond and white gold/platinum jewelry, choose pieces that use cubic zirconia set in sterling silver, brass or other affordable metal.

Steal the look: Kelly Rutherford earrings

Steal: Eliot Danori cubic zirconia earrings

Splurge: Small "Oprah" style tear drop earrings

Sexy shoes

Rutherford's shoes feature a jeweled embellishment over the toe. These kinds of details can really make your look. If your mommy feet are too tired to spend the evening in sky-high heels, choose kitten heels instead.

Steal the look: Kelly Rutherford jeweled sandals

Steal: Touch Ups by Benjamin Walk Tiffany sandals

Splurge: Miu Miu kitten-heel leather sandals

Metallic clutch

The perfect evening bag is a silver metallic clutch. The one Rutherford is carrying offers a simple shape and lots of style. You can get a similar bag at a fraction of the price.

2

Oribe dry

This texturizing spray from Oribe works similar to a dry shampoo to extend your style, but it also adds the benefit of volume and texture so your hair won't look flat and sad on day two post-shower . And to quote Penny from Happy Endings, it smells ah-maaaazing.

3

How to Be a
Redhead bobby pins

Redheads have it rough sometimes. Between enduring heckles for freckles and hurtful jabs like "carrot top" and "ginger," redheaded beauties often start to feel like the odd ones out. Up until now, even bobby pins were only available in gold and brown, which are readily apparent in an auburn updo. But times are a-changin'. How to Be a Redhead now offers three shades of redhead-friendly bobby pins, from strawberry blonde to crimson. Now you can pin back your bangs without little gold or brown pins ruining your look.

8

Fat Curls curl-
creating mousse

Ladies with curly hair know a thing or two about springtime frizz, but they may not know a thing or two about how to prevent it. Fat Curls products specialize in the anti-frizz and anti-humidity concerns of our curly-haired sisters. We especially like the curl-creating mousse because it helps form bouncy, frizz-free curls without drying out hair.

9

Aveda Brilliant emollient finishing gloss

I'm not sure what kind of magic happens when my hairdresser runs Aveda's finishing gloss through my blow out, but it truly is magic. Aveda's products are always bottled goodness, but this product in particular makes hair shine and look finished for days after an initial style.

5 Tips for braiding your own hair

$
0
0
For a lot of people, braiding your own hair can seem like a daunting task. But all it really takes is breaking it down into easy steps and then practice, practice, practice! And we have just the tips to give you that perfect look all on your own.

Fishtail braid

OK, it's time to end the fear of braiding your own hair. While it's definitely sometimes easier to get it looking right on someone else, there is a way to create adorable braids on your very own hair using your very own hands!

How to make a fish-tail braid

Supplies:

To begin, make sure you're working with well brushed-out hair to keep it from getting tangled in the braiding process. Grab two clear elastic bands, a clip-in flower or bow and a mirror, and then get ready to amaze yourself with some serious talent you didn't know you had.

Instructions:

1

Pull your hair to the side in a low ponytail and secure it with a clear elastic band. Pull out any little hairs you want to spill down in the front, and then split your hair in half above the ponytail holder, creating a little hole.

Fishtail braid

2

With one hand holding the split, use the other hand to take the bottom half of your ponytail up and through the hole, pulling it back down behind to create a fun little twist for the beginning of your braid.

Fishtail braid

3

Next, using both hands, split your ponytail into two equal halves, each hand holding a half.

Fishtail braid

4

Now it's time to get busy with the fish tail, which you will be surprised to find is actually pretty easy! Just be sure to keep a tight grip on the two strands, which will help keep things in place. To begin, take an outside piece of hair from the right side and take it across the front and over to the other side. Hold that piece of hair with its new section. Next, take an outside piece from the left side, and take it across and over to the right. Blend it into its new side, and keep repeating this process until you get to the very bottom. Finally, use another clear elastic band to secure the braid at the bottom.

Fishtail braid

5

With this particular braid, sometimes it's super cute to make it just a little bit messy. To get this look, use both hands to pull on either side of the braid. Start at the top, and work your way down. How much pulling and tugging you do completely depends on what style you're going for.

Fishtail braid

Bonus

To finish off the look, try adding a little flower or bow clip to the top of the twist. Ta da! You now have your final look, and you can proudly say you did it all by yourself!

The secret to wearing bold maroon lipstick

Maroon lipstick is a shade that can really outlast the colder months. It's simple to wear with many outfits, especially during the tricky transition from winter to spring.

Go dark and stay stylish

Maroon lipstick is a shade that can really outlast the colder months. It's simple to wear with many outfits, especially during the tricky transition from winter to spring.

Lipsticks are a touchy business. Some women have that one shade they swear by and stock up on tubes at a time, and others are often afraid to step outside of their comfort zone by trying something new.

If you're afraid your complexion isn't suitable for dark shades, just look at the fair-skinned Claire Danes. She pulled off dark maroon lipstick at this year's SAG awards, which goes to show that this trend could work for many different women.

Freshen winter apparel

While the last cold days of winter wither away, spice up dreary clothes with a bold lipstick.

Wearing sullen grays and blacks can really make spring seem far off. By bringing a new lipstick into the mix, it will liven up any well-worn outfit.

Bold maroon and dark gray

Pairing black with light gray makes a sophisticated look, but a bold maroon lip brings true overall richness.

Put an extra spring in your step

When it's about time to start putting away the snow boots and heavy coats, there's no need to swap the lipstick shade. There are some ways to incorporate a strong maroon lip throughout spring. The fashion blog Atlantic-Pacific pushes the envelope by mixing light colors with dark lipstick. What you think may clash proves to be complementary.

Don't be afraid of wearing maroon with a bright floral. Lipstick doesn't have to be matchy-matchy with colors in a shirt.

Step up eveningwear

Evening is when it's time to up the ante and pull out the most glamorous looks. Lately, more and more celebrities are rocking bold makeup on the red carpet.

Kate Bosworth wore a maroon lipstick with the same colored dress, bringing forth a dark and elegant mix. Camille Belle and Jennifer Lopez wore nude dresses with maroon lip shades, and Michelle Trachtenberg stood out with a prominent gold necklace and dress.

Even if your evenings don't require extravagant gowns, take a cue from these celebrities and achieve a paparazzi-worthy outfit. Recreate the looks by wearing maroon lipstick with a statement necklace and nude or maroon dress.

Eyelash envy: How you should be caring for your lashes

$

Getting the perfect lashes is about more than just finding the right mascara — it's also about creating the perfect canvas for your makeup products. Moisturizing and caring for your eyelashes makes the difference between brittle, dry spider lashes and lush, full peepers.
Woman with beautiful lashes

Bat
those Lashes!

Getting the perfect lashes is about more than just finding the right mascara — it's also about creating the perfect canvas for your makeup products. Moisturizing and caring for your eyelashes mean the difference between brittle, dry spider lashes and lush, full peepers.

1

Vaseline

The old beauty go-to, Vaseline can do more than just moisturize chapped skin — it can moisturize lashes, too! After cleansing before bed, apply a small amount of Vaseline to your lashes using your fingertip. Make sure not to rub the product into your eyes, as it can cause puffy eyes in the morning for some women.

2

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is the holy-grail product for moisturizing au naturel and on the cheap. This solid oil is liquefied by heat. Rub a tiny amount of coconut oil between your hands and apply to lashes before bed. As with Vaseline, make sure to apply the oil only to the tips of your lashes. Puffy eyes can occur in some.

3

Lanolin oil

Perfect for intense conditioning, lanolin oil comes from the oils of sheep. Sounds gross, right? You won't mind when you discover the benefits of using this all natural replacement for petroleum jelly. Add a touch of lanolin to your lashes before bed for a visibly moisturized, healthy look.

4

Eyelash conditioner

Want something a little more luxe? There are conditioners made specifically for eyelashes, like Marini Lash eyelash conditioner. The formula contains a combination of enhancing peptides to help you wake up with perfectly pretty eyes.

5

Latisse

Maybe your eyelashes aren't brittle. The problem is you don't have very many to begin with! This miracle prescription helps lengthen and thicken hard-to-see lashes. Once they're grown out, use any of the above methods to maintain thickness and luster.

6

Biotin

Biotin is necessary for cell growth, and guess what? Your eyelashes are dead skin cells. Care for them by taking a daily biotin supplement that helps with growing healthy skin, hair and nails.

7

Mascara primer

Stand up to that bully mascara! If you're a regular mascara wearer, you know the effect mascara can have on your natural lashes. Some formulas dry them out and make them look shorter and brittle once the mascara comes off. Don't worry. Mascara primers to the rescue! These specially formulated conditioners prep the lashes with conditioning ingredients. For example, Smashbox's Layer lash primer uses panthenol to strengthen and make lashes more durable.

10 Celebrity makeup artists share their secrets

To some, makeup might seem like a paint-by-number game, but those who know better understand it's nothing short of wizardry. We went to 10 celebrity makeup artists who offered up their favorite makeup tips and tricks about how to get your version of a flawless face.
1

The artist:
Meredith Hayman

www.meredithhayman.com

Meredith Hayman

Who she's worked with: Christie Brinkley, Channing Tatum and Perez Hilton.

The problem: Straight, downturned or lifeless lashes.

The tip: Learn to really curl those luscious lashes.

"Look straight ahead and try to place the lash curler as close to the root of your top eyelashes as possible," Hayman says. "Do a gentle test squeeze to make sure you don't have any skin caught in the curler. Once placed correctly, squeeze your thumb and pointer fingers together so they touch. While squeezing, gently lift your wrist up and then back down before loosening your grip. Do not apply mascara before curling."

2

The artist:
Nicole Bryl

www.nicolebrylmakeup.com

Nicole Bryl

Who she's worked with: Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, Brooke Shields, Molly Sims, Maria Menounos and Kathie Lee Gifford.

The problem: Your favorite tube of mascara has gone dry.

The tip: Just add a few drops of water!

"Simply add water to the mascara tube, then insert the mascara wand and pump, pump, pump the wand up and down over the sink," Bryl says. "The mascara that is dry and leftover in the tube will moisten up from the added water with each pump and leave you with a few more uses."

3

The artist:
Anastasia Soare

www.anastasia.net

Anastasia Soare

Who she's worked with: Mary Steenbergen, Leighton Meister, Oprah Winfrey, Laura Dern, Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum.

The problem: You want bright-colored eyes without looking tacky.

The tip: Skip the bright eyeshadow and opt for eyeliner instead.

"For most people, I would recommend to avoid bright neon pops of color on the eyes and favor the earthen tones because, quite frankly, very few people over the age of 21 look good with clown-colored eyelids. Add color burst with liner instead."

4

The artist:
Melanie Mills

www.melaniemillsmakeup.com

Melanie Mills

Who she's worked with: Brooke Burke, Brandy, Nicole Scherzinger, Audrina Patridge, Jennifer Hudson and Kim Kardashian.

The problem: Dry lips leading to poor lip-color application.

The tip: Brush them with a toothbrush once or twice a week, then follow up with lip color.

"It's also really nice to apply pure lanolin to lips after brushing teeth and before bed. Such a great conditioner."

5

The artist:
Susan Heydt

www.susanheydt.com

The artist: Susan Heydt

Who she's worked with: Allison Williams, Elizabeth Olsen, Emma Roberts, America Ferrera and Quvenzhane Willis.

The problem: Patchy foundation application is getting you down.

The tip: Always start with a primer.

"[I] love to start with clean skin and add a primer," Heydt says. "Your fine lines and imperfections are filled to provide a nice surface with or without adding makeup."

6

The artist:
Susan Giordano

www.giordanobeauty.com

Susan Giordano

Who she's worked with: Katie Holmes, Brittany Snow, Kristin Davis, Kelly Ripa, Alyssa Milano and more.

The problem: You're not sure which mascara to choose.

The tip: When in doubt, go black.

"Black mascara works on everyone," Giordano says. "For fair blondes, it might be the only eye makeup you'll need. The whole point of mascara is to enhance the shape of the eye and define your lashes, so it needs to be visible."

7

The artist:
Julianne Kaye

www.juliannekaye.com

Julianne Kaye

Who she's worked with: The cast of NBC's Fashion Star.

The problem: You're not sure how to use concealer.

The tip: Use it after applying foundation, not before.

"Concealers tend to have a heavy consistency, so it's important to apply it after you've applied your foundation, which many people do not do," Kaye says. "You'll find that your base makeup will generally take care of most of your concerns, so concealer is just that added insurance."

8

The artist:
Rose Hill

www.makeupcrew.com

The artist: Rose Hill

Who she's worked with: John Travolta, Carol Burnett, Geena Davis and more.

The problem: Cloudy, red eyes messing up your application.

The tip: Use eye drops before every makeup application.

"To keep a fresh look all day, start your makeup routine by using eye drops," Hill says. "You can [also] relieve redness or irritation on the skin by applying eye drops with a cotton ball on dry skin before your makeup routine."

5

The artist:
Virginia Linzee

www.virginialinzee.carbonmade.com

Virginia Linzee

Who she's worked with: Andie MacDowell, Cheryl Hines and Natalie Coughlin.

The problem: Clunky, chunky foundation application.

The tip: Use a clean powder puff to buff hard edges and lines.

"Always buff [foundation] with a soft, clean powder puff for a seamless finish that looks just like skin," Linzee says. "Take a clean, soft powder puff and buff out the foundation lightly. Don't press too hard so that you wipe off the foundation, but with quick light motions buff it in. I go upwards first and all around, but finish in a downward motion so all those tiny peach fuzz hairs are pressed down in the end. You'll see how this gives your skin a flawless look that doesn't look too made up. People will ask what skin-care products you've been using because your face looks perfect, but not like you have makeup on."

10

The artist:
Lisa Pelayo

www.lisapelayo.com

The artist: Lisa Pelayo

Who she's worked with: Various models for editorial shoots.

The problem: Uneven foundation application from sponges, fingers and foundation brushes.

The tip: Use a beauty blender, a reusable sponge ideal for light-to-buildable application.

"Pour a small amount of foundation on the back of your hand and press the smaller side of the beauty blender against your foundation," Pelayo says. "In small dabs, start applying your foundation on your forehead and work your way down to your nose, then towards the outside of your face. For fuller coverage, repeat this step until desired coverage is reached."

Pucker up: Our favorite pink shades

For those of you who were sad to see neon lipstick make an exit back in the 1980s, welcome to 2013! We've selected our favorite bright-pink lipsticks to help you sport this awesome makeup trend without looking like a clown.

NARS Funny Face

NARS Cosmetics in Funny Face

Lipstick wearers everywhere know that product descriptions like "long-wearing" and "matte finish" usually mean that the color will look and feel like a horrific hybrid of red chalk and baby powder within five minutes of application. We love NARS lipsticks because they provide a full-coverage look in a semi-matte finish that will not dry your lips into sad, shrunken raisins. If you're wild enough to try a fuchsia lip color, we suggest NARS Funny Face. You won't look funny... maybe just a little fashionable in fuchsia.

Beauty Addicts sinful

beautyADDICTS Beautyfull Lips in Sinful

Lipsticks from beautyADDICTS promise intense hydration and a lip-plumping formula. The products don't disappoint because lips feel healthy, moisturized and sensual upon application. We love the color Sinful because it's a nice blend of magenta and red, so it's not quite as pinky-pink as other brands. The color is also included in the brand's Seduce line of products, so the promise of sexy time upon lipstick purchase seems like a nice added benefit.

MAC viva glam nicky

M.A.C. in Viva Glam Nicki

Whether you love or hate Nicki Minaj, there's one thing we can all agree on: Girlfriend loves her hot-pink lipsticks. And why not? She totally pulls off the look, and hot-pink colors make her gorgeous lips pop. Nicki recently teamed up with M.A.C. Cosmetics to produce Viva Glam Nicki. The bold product lasts through eating and drinking, but we recommend you use a lip balm with it to prevent parched lips, because it can feel a little drying.

Yves saint laurent provocative pink

Yves Saint Laurent in Provocative Pink

If you're a little shy about bright-pink lipsticks, we understand. Bold colors sometimes seem risky, especially since so many drugstore brands just end up flaking off or morphing into a hideous color halfway through the day without so much as a peep of warning. Sometimes, though, a bold look is worth a little extra investment. YSL lipsticks are a bit pricey, but to many women, a bright, pouty, moisturized kisser is worth the expense. We like that YSL's Provocative Pink glides on like butter and brightens up the entire face.

Maybelline new york vivid rose

Maybelline New York in Vivid Rose

Granted, a bold color is sometimes worth an expensive purchase, but sometimes it's worth just playing around with a bit. Maybelline's Vivid line of lipsticks are all available for under $10, so you can try out lots of different eye-catching colors, including several shades of bright pink. We especially like Vivid Rose because it's a quintessential hot-pink, on-trend look for the spring and summer.

Manna Kadar Cosmetics in Saucy

Manna Kadar Cosmetics in Saucy

A woman with the confidence to wear bright-pink lipstick projects a certain image. Don't try hot pinks unless you want to be seen as trendy, fun and perhaps a little saucy. The formula for Manna Kadar Cosmetics' lipstick is long-lasting, and the color Saucy packs a terrific magenta punch. Pair it with a simple sweep of gold across your eyelids, and your saucy face will be ready for spring.

Hollywood Cosmetics in Pout

Hollywood Cosmetics in Pout

The owner of Hollywood Cosmetics sees makeup as an extension of skincare, so all products are infused with botanical ingredients and promise to improve the skin's health. And, incidentally, lips are made of skin, so it works out great for everyone. The color Pout looks as soft as a rose petal in the lipstick tube, and it glides on just as smoothly for an all-day, slightly demure pink lip color. It offers a pop of pink without screaming "Look at me!"

Body of Royalty in Goddess

Body of Royalty in Goddess

Body of Royalty is a makeup line that specializes in only lipsticks and lip glosses, so you know their products have to be good. If you enjoy feeling like a deity, the line's Goddess shade might be right for you. The color hits a sweet spot between hot pink and bubblegum pink, so you can wear it as part of your five-minute face or your nighttime look.

Beauty blenders: Why you'll never use anything else

When you're working with layman makeup skills, getting perfect natural-looking foundation coverage is more than a little frustrating. Do you use a sponge? Your fingers? One of those fancy foundation brushes?

The little sponge wonder

When you're working with layman makeup skills, getting perfect natural-looking foundation coverage is more than a little frustrating. Do you use a sponge? Your fingers? One of those fancy foundation brushes?

A new product has come on the market, dubbed the "beauty blender." This eco-friendly reusable sponge gives great coverage without the product waste and mess of your everyday wedge sponge. Plus, it's easy to use. We consulted with Houston-based bridal and editorial makeup artist Lisa Pelayo on how best to use the sponge wonder.

1

Cleanse

Scrub up! Prepare your skin as normal. Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and use a foundation primer, if desired. A fresh face is the perfect canvas for makeup application, so you want to make sure your skin is looking your best to get ideal coverage.

2

Wet your sponge

Wet your sponge

Run your beauty blender sponge under the tap, and then squeeze it to wring out excess water. If you need to clean your sponge, now would be a good time, before you use it on your face. Make sure the sponge has the perfect consistency before using it. "The blender will enlarge and will also feel fluffy to the touch,"Pelayo says.

3

Foundation

Foundation

Pour a small amount of foundation on the back of your hand, warming it to create a smooth consistency for application. Press the smaller tip of the sponge into the makeup. "In small dabs, start applying your foundation on your forehead and work your way down to your nose, then towards the outside of your face," Pelayo says. "For fuller coverage, repeat this step until desired coverage is reached."

4

Don't forget the small spots

Use the tip of the beauty blender to reach any spots you might have overlooked, like the inside corners of your eyes, the outer crease of your nose and your jawline.

Don’t forget the small spots

5

Conceal

Still have some imperfections uncovered? The beauty blender can handle that, too. Adding a small amount of concealer to the back of your hand, dab the moistened sponge in the product. "Start by pressing on your concealer using the pointy tip of the beauty blender, and be sure to dab underneath the eye, working your way from the inner corner to where the coverage is needed," Pelayo suggests.

Don’t forget the small spots

6

Little extras

The beauty blender is also a great way to apply other liquid makeup, like cream blush. "When applying blush, be sure to only get a quarter-size amount on the beauty blender to prevent applying too much color to the cheek," she says. "Smile and dab the blush along the apples of your cheeks or wherever you prefer to apply your blush, and then proceed to blend."

Don’t forget the small spots

7

Finish as desired

Now that your beauty blender application is finished, you can proceed with finishing powder, bronzer, blush and highlighter as desired.

Gloss treatments: What are they and why should you get one?

If your hair looks little down-and-out, it might be time to ask your stylist about options for revival. One quick, inexpensive route is the gloss treatment.
Woman with glossy hair

If your hair looks a little down-and-out, it might be time to ask your stylist about options for revival. One quick, inexpensive route is the gloss treatment.

Gorgeous gloss

What is it?

A gloss treatment, also referred to as a color glaze or a glaze treatment, gives your hair shine, boosts dull and lifeless hair and helps smooth flyaways.

Gloss treatments can be clear or tinted. Both types of treatments revitalize hair; tinted treatments can help enhance or maintain color, as well. Tinted options range from brighter blonde and gold to red or brown hues .

While gloss treatments aren't an alternative to color, they do help enhance and refresh your current color, bring out subtleties and can be a good introduction to hair color for someone with virgin hair.

Why should I get one?

Gloss treatments are great conditioning tools, so if your locks are dry and lifeless, ask your stylist about their gloss options to bring back your moisture and shine.

If you regularly color or highlight your hair, gloss treatments can give you an added boost between colors. Blondes are especially prone to flyaways and damage, so gloss treatments also help smooth and strengthen you lighter-haired ladies.

How long does it last? What’s it cost?

Gloss treatments are demi-permanent, which means they last about four to six weeks before washing/fading out. You could get them every six weeks or so with your regular trim and be just fine.

Gloss treatments usually run around $20-30 but, of course, every salon is different.

So whether you're on a much-needed journey from damaged to healthy hair or just need a little boost, talk to your stylist about the gloss treatment options.

Why we love it

This cute spring shirtdress is a season staple. The peachy color looks good against any skin tone, and the subtle polka dots add just the right amount of eye-catching drama.

How to style

Wearing a colorful or printed dress? Make that the standout piece. How do you achieve this? By pairing neutral accessories with the vibrant frock, like Lauren did with her black heels, bag and oversize sunnies.

What to remember

Defining the waist is key. If you're wearing something without a lot of natural shape, like this shirtdress, make sure you cinch in the fabric around your torso. That way, you won't appear boxy underneath the loose fabric. Take note from LC and wrap your simple black belt around your natural waistline to instantly appear slimmer, no matter your body type.

With spring in the air, we're thinking about shedding winter layers and showing a bit more skin. Get gorgeous from top to bottom with our expert tips for these beauty-boosting spa treatments.

Spring spa
treatments to try

We asked A-list beauty expert and founder of Skinsations Spa LeAine Dehmer to share her top picks for hot spa trends to try this spring.

Cellulite detox treatments

Dreading bikini season because of cellulite? Think about trying a cellulite detox to help get into beach-ready shape. "Cellulite is not fat, it's toxins trapped in the upper fat tissue of the body. You have to know what cellulite is to treat it properly," begins Dehmer. Compression wraps that claim to melt away fat aren't the way to go, however, since they don't actually target cellulite. "Detox wraps can literally remove inches of unsightly bulges and ripples from your body," she says. "They are dramatically effective and healthy for your body."

A cellulite detox treatment aims to boost circulation, helping flush the toxins out of the upper tissue of your body through the lymphatic system, explains Dehmer. "Spring is the perfect season to detox from the winter loading and bloating, and when you begin your cellulite treatments to be summer and bikini beach ready."

the winter loading
and bloating.

Facial skin peels

Transition your skin from winter to summer with the help of a skin peel. "Not only can we pack on extra pounds in the winter, but we also pack on an abundance of dead skin cell buildup from excessive forced heat and chilling winds, and physical layers of oils, waxes and silicones from those heavier winter creams," explains Dehmer. “A skin peel will help make your skin breath, glow and come alive.” Expect your peel to be done in a series of six , and note that professional peels need to be performed by a licensed skin-care therapist, nurse or doctor. "Each peel works deeper into the skin to remove the layers of dead skin cells," explains Dehmer.

Full body peels

Get ready to spring clean your whole body. After a long winter, you've likely noticed white flakes attached to your tights or nylons, or dry, itchy skin all over. If that's the case, you might want to indulge in a full body peel, says Dehmer. Your body will be soaked and pampered with natural fruit enzymes and acid and exotic plant oils from around the world. "This deep peel turns your body into silk with a velvety feel for weeks," she tells us.

Dehmer says the full body peel beats a traditional salt or sugar scrub when it comes to giving your skin a smooth and healthy glow. "They can only dust off the surface flakes," she explains. "A body peel completely removes the entire dead-skin buildup, which is why your results last for weeks." A body peel is also a great precursor to tanning treatments since it gets your skin so smooth.

Full body mud facial

Shake off the last of the winter blues — and get a mega beauty boost all over — by getting a little dirty. Dehmer suggests a detoxifying mud treatment to really revitalize from top to toe. "What women wouldn’t want a baby soft, silky hair and body? Detoxing every pore of your body, this enzyme mud therapy exfoliates and detoxes your body," she explains. These treatments work to unclog pores to increase oxygen to your body and boost your body's ability to absorb products, while at the same time nourishing and softening with minerals.

Find the best spa treatment for your skin type>>

The scalp facial

When it comes to spa treatments, we usually think of facials or body treatments. But this spring, don’t forget about your scalp. The scalp facial is poised for popularity — with good reason. "This treatment bounces out winter hair dullness, dryness and lack of volume," says Dehmer. Not to mention, think about how much you love your hair shampooed at the salon: "This treatment is scalp, hair and massage on overdrive," she affirms. You can expect an enzyme scalp exfoliant to cleanse hair follicles, adding volume. Then essential oils hydrate, nourish and add shine to your hair. A scalp, neck and shoulder massage relieves stress and tension for a soothing experience.

makeup trends Straight from the runway

The best place to learn new makeup trends is from watching the runway. Cosmetic lines are always ahead of the curve, bringing us next season's top beauty looks! Here is how to create a haute look from one of my favorite Spring 2013 runway collections.

Simple and beautiful pops of color have been all over the Spring 2013 runway, but nothing quite caught my eye like the Kenzo Spring 2013 makeup looks. The skin is moisturized and bright, while the lashes and brows are left bare for an effortless touch — plus a pop of color in an unfamiliar yet fun shape. I love the pop of orange you see in this image; it's perfect for spring, with a simple-yet-strategic shape.

Kenzo Spring 2013

To recreate this look, I chose my own favorite shade in a classic bright mint. I’ve been loving mint for spring and thought this was a perfect time to show it off. You can recreate any makeup look, but try to choose colors that best suit your skin tone and eye color.

Supplies:

  • Your favorite fluid foundation
  • Strobe Cream Moisturizer from MAC Cosmetics
  • A dual-fiber brush, like the MAC #187 you see featured in the photos
  • A highlighting powder or crème for your cheekbones, ridge of nose, brow bone and inner eyelid/tear duct
  • Something to contour the hollows of your cheeks and the crease of your eye
  • A bright colorful shadow or liner of your choice and an angled liner brush
  • A clear gloss for a high shine on the lips.

Lets get started!

Instructions:

1

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

On your hand, use your dual-fiber brush to mix a small amount of your foundation with MAC’s Strobe Cream moisturizer. This mixture will give you a coverage that is soft and provides a high shine to the skin. Start on your cheeks, forehead, nose and chin, then softly blend out to the outer area of the face.

2

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

Apply a powder or crème highlighter to the high planes of your face for an even higher shine in more strategic places. This will make your skin look dewy and bright. Next, with a soft blending brush like MAC’s #224 Tapered Blending Brush, apply your highlighter to the brow bone, tear duct and inner eyelid.

3

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

With an angled blush brush, contour the hollows of your cheekbones to start adding structure, depth and color to your face. At this point, your skin should look flawless, shiny and warm from the contour.

4

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

With your tapered blending brush, contour your crease with your bronzer for depth. Also, get your colorful shadow or liner ready along with your angled liner brush.

5

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

Using your colorful pop, start applying a good amount of color along the top lash line. Make the line as full or thin as you desire! You’ll be blending this product with a brush later on. Then, start applying the color to the bottom outer and inner corner of the eye, leaving the center void of color.

6

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

Using your angled liner brush, apply more of your colorful product to get a full coverage of color. On the inner corner of the eye, use the tip of the liner to help you create a fun and small yet drastic point. Just like you see with the orange in the Kenzo image!

7

Recreate Kenzo's Spring 2013

Pop your clear gloss on your lips, plus add mascara to your top and bottom lashes. Voilà! You’ve recreated the runway — with, perhaps, your own twist added into the look. I am displaying the look with one eye finished as well as with both eyes finished so you can better see the technique and design. This look is perfect for playing with color without going overboard.

Awaken your look this spring

Looking to transition your makeup essentials from winter to spring? We asked Target Beauty design partner Petra Strand about the best products, trends and tips for women so you can be in the know about what's hot this spring!

She Knows: What are your favorite makeup trends this spring?

Petra Strand: I love that the traditional black smoky eye look is seeing some color variations. Jewel tones look fresh and new. My Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in Copper Glow is new for spring and shows that color can be both natural and exciting, drawing attention to the eyes and making them brighter and more awake.

For lips, I love a pop of color to brighten the face this spring. The Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red is flying out of our London store this spring. It provides the perfect mix of rose-tinted lips with a hint of red undertone. It also looks great on cheeks!

SK: If you had to recommend a new popular product, what would it be?

PS: The BB Cream trend here in the U.S. is a bit confusing for customers as there is such a varied range of quality available out there. I recommend really studying the ingredients listings to get the best value and to see what will work best for your skin. Our Pixi Illuminating Tint & Conceal has been our most popular multitasker for many years and, in a way, was one of the original BB Creams, except we included the concealer!

SK: What products can women use to achieve a soft and effortless look?

PS: You can look polished and put together with six products, that’s all you need — especially if you use multitasking products!

  • Tinted moisturizer and concealer
  • Mascara
  • Cheek gel
  • Tinted lip gloss
  • Eye pencil
  • Eyelash curler

Pixi makeup -- Spring picks

SK: Are there any new products in your line that could spice up someone’s makeup collection?

PS: The EXTRA Eye Bright Liner is new for spring, and is my secret weapon to looking refreshed in an instant. Line inner bottom rim with this lavender-tinted pencil, which deflects the red in eyes and makes anyone look more awake immediately.

The Endless Silky Eye Pen in Copper Glow is also a great alternative to the normal black or brown eye liner that most women use. It’s the perfect "new neutral."

SK: What is your favorite shade of lipstick this spring?

PS: For a spring holiday, I take the Pixi Succulent Lip Twin in Pink Peony and use as my cheek and lip color. The shade looks fantastic with a tan! For evening, I like a lip stain as it is low maintenance and doesn’t require reapplication all evening. Pixi Lip Blush in Youth is my favorite!

SK: How do you still go bold with your spring makeup and not look like you’re stuck in the fall/winter trends?

PS: The best way to go bold for spring is to choose seasonally appropriate shades. Bright corals in all variations look fresh for spring — the Pixi Nail Colour Summer Sunset in my spring collection is a great option for women who want to ease into the trend. For a more natural look, seashell pinks and bronze are always great for spring. They add just a hint of color to awaken the face and bring out women’s natural beauty.

SK: Why has coconut water become a popular beauty product ingredient?

PS: Women in tropical climates have used coconut water in their skin care routine for centuries. It helps create lysine, which is an important ingredient in the formation of collagen, hence a great anti-aging ingredient.

Coconut water also hydrates inside and out. Drinking it every day enhances hydration and blood circulation, which puts the "glow" on your face. Using it on the skin does the same thing. I like the new Pacifica Purify Coconut Water Cleansing Wipes.

Hair today, gone tomorrow: How to prevent hair loss

We all want a gorgeous, thick mane of hair. The scary truth, though, is we lose plenty of hair every day — like 100 hairs! If you've discovered more hair than ever falling out in the shower or after brushing your hair, stop the cycle before it gets out of control.

Show your hair you care

We all want a gorgeous, thick mane of hair. The scary truth, though, is we lose plenty of hair every day — like 100 hairs! If you've discovered more strands than ever falling out in the shower or after brushing your hair, stop the cycle before it gets out of control.

What is normal, and when are things out of control?

"While shedding up to 100 hairs per day is normal, people who notice hair loss in large amounts after brushing or showering or whose hair becomes thinner overall should visit a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment," says Dr. Rebecca Tung, a Chicago-area dermatologist.

Dr. Tung stresses the importance of maintaining proper nutrition. Crash diets or avoiding important nutrients like protein or healthy fats can bring on or worsen hair loss. Also important: getting enough key vitamins which promote healthy hair growth. The B vitamins, especially Biotin, and vitamin D are essential for normal hair growth.

Nourishment for hair can be found in the most fascinating of places, too. "Molasses is a Chinese trick to growing hair. You can digest it or use it to rinse your hair. When ready to apply, add one spoon of molasses to a cup of warm water and massage it into your hair. Cover your roots, since that is where the hair follicle grows. Let this set for an hour, rinse off, then go on with your regular shower routine," shares Elline Surianello, founder/CEO of LeMetric Hair and Beauty Center, a midtown Manhattan-based, full-service salon that offers hair cutting, styling and custom hair systems and extensions.

"Also eat healthy fats and oils including omega-3 essential fatty acids from cold-water fish , nuts including walnuts, brazil nuts, and macadamias, and seeds such as hemp and chia, " says Paulina Nelega, registered clinical herbalist with Hair Essentials. Borage oil supplements provide GLA , a healthy omega-6 fatty acid that, along with omega-3 EFAs, help to decrease inflammation in the body, as well as promote healthy sebum .

"We all know that a healthy diet is the foundation of overall health and vibrant well-being, and hair that is thick and lustrous is a reflection of that. A balanced diet featuring fresh, whole foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables that cover the entire color spectrum, along with a daily supplement that provides a wide array of natural, hair-healthy ingredients, will ensure your body and hair receive the nutrients they need for radiant health," says Nelega.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

A simple blood test in your doctor's office can give you the answer. The thyroid is the master gland of metabolism. When it is not functioning properly, changes in your hair can result. "If you are low , hair can be brittle and dry, as well as shedding more than normal on the scalp. Also, you can find abnormal loss of the outer edge of the eyebrows in low-thyroid conditions, as well. Having too much thyroid hormone can also result in hair changes — thin fragile hair that also falls out excessively," says Dr. Tung.

Minerals

We've always known we should take our vitamins to stay healthy, but it can keep our hair strong, as well. Not only do minerals keep our hair hydrated and evenly textured, they can even help keep our hair from splitting, especially some of the most important minerals — calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. You can find lots of these in your favorite veggies — another reason to have a salad for lunch! You may want to consider taking a daily mineral supplement, as well.

Be kind to your hair

Hair brush

"Believe it or not, sleeping can tug on hair and lead to patch hair loss," says Scott-Vincent Borba, SVP of Marketing and Creative Director of Toppik, a leader in thinning hair solutions. To offset sleeping jitters which can lead to breakage, be sure to condition hair from root to tip.

"It's important to brush your hair correctly," says Borba. Hold up sections of the hair and brush down to eliminate tangles. Then gradually move all the way up until you can brush from root to tip without knots. Also, avoid teasing and back-combing as much as possible, as this leads to breakage.

To give the appearance of fuller hair, try a product like Toppik Hair Building Fibers. These keratin fibers are static charged and will cling to the tiniest, thinnest hairs, and they will not budge until you wash your hair.

"Low-level laser light therapy is a great modality offered in the clinic or as an at-home service for women who are starting to thin," says Dr. Ryan Welter, board-certified hair restoration surgeon in North Attleboro, MA. The laser therapy is a focused column of cool light which interacts with the hair follicles and causes them to start dividing. The result is a cessation of the progression of hair loss in more than 90 percent of women and up to 20 to 25 percent grow new hair. These therapeutic sessions should be done for at least six months before a maintenance program is considered.

I've been plus sized most of my life. Toward the end of elementary school, I could wear my mom's leggings — don't judge, this was 1994 and I wasn’t a "cool" kid. In junior high, I was squeezing into the largest size in Express, trying to wear trendy clothes like my friends. It was in sixth or seventh grade when I first walked into a Lane Bryant, and clothes fit me! A short time later, I discovered Fashion Bug had plus sizes. All of a sudden, I had options.

This was 15 years ago. Leaps and bounds have been made in the fashion world to cater to bigger girls since then. And while the options are out there and have improved tremendously, styles are still limited. For the hours of work a normal-sized girl needs to spend to find the right pair of jeans, it might take a plus-sized girl twice as long. And what options are out there? It is my belief that plus-sized girls can have style, too. We are stylish, cute and sexy. We have great friends, families and careers. Why should we be hidden in the far corners of department stores, next to the bathroom, and included as an afterthought in magazines — especially when the average American woman is a size 12 to 14? You can look great at any size, whether you're a 2, 12, 22 or 32.

Some of my favorite words of fashion wisdom come from fashion expert Tim Gunn. He tells designers in nearly every episode of Project Runway to pay attention to silhouette, proportion and fit. This is especially important for plus-sized girls. Just because something fits on your body, doesn’t mean you should wear it. One of my high-school English teachers once complained that "Omar the tentmaker" made her clothes. I’d never heard that phrase before, but 10 years later, I haven’t forgotten it. No woman wants to wear a tent, and quite frankly, it isn’t flattering. A garment that fits you looks so much better than one that’s too big or tent-like. You’re not hiding anything under all of that fabric.

Style advice

  • Shop around: It takes work. Try things on, even if a garment doesn't have hanger appeal. My favorite dress looks frumpy on the hanger.
  • Accessorize: Don't forget accessories. Headbands, hats, jewelry, shoes, bags, etc. They are usually one-size-fits-all and can make an outfit. I love a cute purse, some statement jewelry, like big earrings and an Art Deco ring, and because I live in "the Valley of the Sun," my sunglasses.
  • Be confident in yourself: People pick up first and foremost on the attitude you project.
  • Don’t settle: At the 2013 Academy Awards, Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer told E! reporters at the Governors Ball, "I'm not opposed to different designers [she wore a gown by Tadashi Shoji], but here’s the thing, they’re looking at twig bodies. It’s very easy to dress perfection, it’s very difficult to dress non-perfection... I want to look as good as everybody else." Don’t buy something just because it fits. Wait to find pieces that flatter your figure and your personal style. You don’t have to settle just because you’re plus-sized. You shouldn’t look good for your size, you should look good. Period.
  • How I would categorize my style: Classic with a rocker edge. I also love pieces with vintage details.
  • My favorite outfit: Dark-wash bootcut jeans , a comfy sweater and ballet flats.
  • My go-to stores and brands: Lane Bryant, I.N.C. at Macy's, Nordstrom.
  • Fashion faux pas: I hate going out for a nice dinner or a night on the town and seeing people in shorts and a T-shirt. Dress right for the occasion! A tracksuit, even a designer one, is probably not the right attire for Christmas dinner at a fancy restaurant.
  • Advice to live by from the professionals: "Dress the body you have now, not the body you wish you had, or might have, if you lose those extra pounds."— Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, What Not to Wear
