While following today's beauty trends can be exciting, it's always a good idea to look back to beautiful women in history for timeless makeup tips that never go out of style. In honor of Women's History Month, we take a look at the most beautiful women through the ages — and their fabulous secrets!

Cleopatra

We’ve heard she was the most beautiful woman of her time — maybe of any time before — but she worked at it. Cleopatra — ruler, beauty and temptress — had a few secrets to keeping dazzling.

“Almond oils , apple cider vinegar , sea salt scrubs and honey baths ,” were among her secrets says Dr. Coyle S. Connolly, a board certified dermatologist.

Mary Ellen Cassman, founder and president of Dorey Aromatherapy, furthers: “Cleopatra was not only a beautiful and beguiling woman but a brilliant strategist as well. When she learned that she was to be summoned to meet Mark Antony, then King of Egypt, she sent her servants two weeks ahead of her by boat to cruise the Nile River. Their boats were elaborately decorated and filled with fragrant flowers and essential oils that wafted along the warm air of the river.

When Cleopatra finally arrived in Egypt, via the Nile, her boat was the most elaborately decorated and fragranced. Prior to her emerging from the boat, her scent preceded her. Who would do such a thing? Who is this mysterious woman? By the time Mark Antony met her, he was already enchanted. And the rest is history…

Rose, frankincense, cypress, neroli and myrrh were some of the fragrant oils and blossoms that Cleopatra employed to announce her arrival. Each has well-known aphrodisiac, uplifting yet grounding effects on the cerebral cortex by the release of neuro-peptides. Cleopatra is credited for bathing in milk and rose petals to keep her skin soft and fragrant.

Interestingly, the first liquid perfume as well as the first known chemist, a woman, has been credited to Egypt 4,000 years ago.

Helen of Troy

Helen of Troy

Through the ages, royalty, clergy, aristocracy and the common alike have used essential oils for healing, ritual and perfumery, and the ancient Greeks believed that essential oils “healed evil humors."

Since all in ancient Greece favored light complexions, women often wore very little makeup. Honey and olive oil were the favored ingredients in all cosmetics — and it worked. Aphrodite was the goddess of love, and Helen of Troy was so gorgeous that she started a war! You don’t get much better than that.

Painting: Helen of Troy by Evelyn de Morgan

Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria

“This legendary British queen perfumed her gloves with the pure essential oil of roses to keep less pleasing smells at bay,” says Cassman. Perfumed gloves soon became a fad and not only kept one’s spirits elevated but kept the immune system strong and skin of the hands soft as well as fragrant.

From there, the lawyers of the Old Bailey began carrying a nose gay to ward off germs from defendants. The fad quickly caught on until everyone was donning the “tussie mussie.”

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth was more than the daughter of the most infamous couple in history — King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn — she also was something of a beauty icon. People didn't wear makeup yet at that time — they believed it contributed to blocking energy — but they were all about having a pale and porcelain complexion akin to their beloved queen.

Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel

"The best color is the one that looks good on you,” is attributed to this epic woman from history. No truer words were ever spoken. It doesn't matter what eyeshadow is "in" or what lip color is popular. “Find your palette — for clothing, makeup and accessories and just wear that color! It will keep your costs down and have you looking your spiffiest,” says Vicky Oliver, author of The Millionaire's Handbook: How to Look and Act Like a Millionaire Even If You're Not .

Sophia Loren

Sophia's signature sun-kissed skin and nude lip exuded sex appeal and confidence. Try this look with a self-tanner and a natural gloss, advises professional makeup artist Meredith Hayman.

Anna Held

Anna Held

Legendary showman Florenz Ziegfeld promoted his top star, Anna Held, as taking a daily milk bath to keep her skin healthy and moisturized, using gallons of milk per day. This bit of beauty PR contributed to a nationwide fad, recalls David Zyla, Emmy Award-winning stylist and author of Color Your Style: How to Wear Your True Colors.

Brooke Shields

Take a look at this season’s New York Fashion Week’s runways — to this day, Brooke's full, natural brows are her most celebrated feature, and ours. “A fuller brow draws attention to the eye and frames the face. If you are the victim of over plucking, try to grow them in. Use a brow pencil a shade lighter than your hair color and use short strokes to fill in your brows where sparse,” says Hayman.

5 Things your spring wardrobe needs today

$

If you live in a region that gets cold during the winter months , you can’t wait for spring. Spring brings with it the promise of pedicures, sun on our skin and new spring trends. Bring spring home with one of these style must-haves.
1

Polka dots

Polka dot shirt

If you feel like throwbacks from your grandma’s closet have hit the racks this spring, you’re right! We have Kate Middleton and Taylor Swift to thank for making granny styles a thing again. The exciting thing about these styles is that they look good on everyone, and when trendsetters like Kate wear classic designs, they become fresh and sexy again. Best of all, a purchase of a polka dot design like this dress is never a waste of your money. They are always appropriate for the office, a lunch date or for attending a spring wedding.

2

Metallic magic

Metallic tank

In 2013, we're putting the spring pedal to the metal. Metallic is holding spring fashion down and having its way with it. We see this trend in tops like this one , dresses, shoes and wrist cuffs.

The brilliant thing about metallics is they go with everything and can instantly make any look more edgy. Wear this look with confidence, but don’t overdo it. Remember when it comes to shine, there's a fine line between sparkly and burning someone’s retina.

3

The trifecta shoe

Black and white shoe

This shoe brings three of spring’s shoe trends to one place — black and white, wedges and straps. Black and white has been an important trend on spring runways, but if the monochromatic scheme doesn’t speak to you, this is a fun way to bring the trend to your wardrobe.

If a wedge isn’t for you, look for spring shoes with lots of straps — trust us, they won’t be hard to find.

4

India-inspired

Indian inspired dress

Now that Middle Eastern and India-inspired fashions are here, we have but one question. What took so long? These styles are long , luxurious and gorgeous.

They also take a bit of confidence to carry off, so if you don’t think a bold statement like this is for you, you can still indulge in this trend with a handkerchief dress or with a maxi dress with an India-inspired print, like this one . Look how this style showcases the girls, but still offers ample coverage without looking like a nightgown.

5

Short suits

Shorts

A pair of shorts turned into a suit had an omnipresence on spring fashion runways. We love this versatile look because it’s youthful, and it brings a little femininity to an otherwise masculine look.

Pair this look with a professional pair of flats or pumps, but toss a contrasting pair of edgy heels in your car to take this ensemble from the office to an evening out. The shorts suit is clever from a practicality standpoint as well. On a cool spring morning, a blazer or jacket is a layer that will keep you comfortable, but it can be removed later as the day warms up! Smart and cute — isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Spring shoe guide: The what, where and why answers to spring's shoe trends

A girl can never have too many shoes. But if you're looking for a few new trends to test out this season, here is a list of our absolute must-haves for spring.

shoes

... But if you're looking for a few new trends to test out this season, here is a list of our absolute must-haves for spring.

Floral pumps

shoes

Loft Petra Multicolored Floral Print Pumps $80

We saw a bounty of florals on the spring runways — everyone from Rebecca Taylor to Jason Wu showed these flirty and girly prints in their collections.

Where it's appropriate:

Everywhere! The good news is floral pumps are so hot that you can pretty much wear them everywhere: to the office, to dinner or even to weekend brunch with the girls.

How to wear:

Since a floral print is so fun and vibrant, you'll want to show them off. So don't cover up the heels with long pants.

Opt for a neutral, flowy skirt to the knee to make your shoes the standout piece in your ensemble.

Lucite heels

shoes

Kate Spade New York Illaria Heels $358

Looking to really make a statement? Give Lucite heels a spin! And yes, while you may think they're only for trashy girls, that's not the case! Nina Ricci and Fendi displayed them in their spring runway shows. Meaning: They're totally chic now! Some of New York City's top style bloggers can't get enough of the trend either! "Lucite heels are a great way to lengthen any frame without adding chunky distractions," said Justin Livingston of fashion blog scoutsixteen.com.

Where it's appropriate:

The see-through detailing may not be appropriate for the office, so save your Lucite looks for the weekends when you're ready to let your hair down and party.

How to wear:

Anything too short on the bottom will make Lucite heels look a bit tacky, so try a classic, tapered black pant for a super modern look. The tapered detailing will come in right at the ankle to really highlight the heels.

Cork wedges

shoes

DV by Dolce Vita Tremor Wedges $79

You've probably invested in wedges over the last few years because they've continued to be a major spring trend. But, this season, give the classic wedge a little something extra with cork detailing!

Where it's appropriate:

Cork screams casual, so it's best to rock cork wedges when you're off duty. The best part? Wedges are meant to be comfortable with the support on the bottom, so you'll look like you're wearing heels, even though you're not for those long strolls in the park with your man.

How to wear:

Since wedges have a heel-esque quality to them, they'll instantly make your legs look slim and toned by giving the illusion that your legs are elongated. So a skirt on the bottom is best.

Black and white stilettos

shoes

L.A.M.B. Ohio Heels $355

There's nothing more classic and sophisticated than a black and white ensemble, so try a splash of this chic combo in your footwear this spring — just like Derek Lam did in his spring show.

Where it's appropriate:

While you technically could wear this style anywhere, a fierce stiletto makes the biggest statement in a work setting.

Walk into your office with a killer pair of heels, and your colleagues will instantly know you mean business.

How to wear:

If you really want to create the illusion of a powerful businesswoman, try a sleek suit in white or black to complement the white and black stilettos.

Pointy-toe flats

shoes

VC Signature Chicago Flats $195

Not a heel girl? Don't despair — you can still look insanely adorable and fashionable with flats this season. Especially vibrant pointy flats!

Ericka Goodman, Fashion Editor at Ebony Magazine says, "Sighted in the collections of our generation’s greatest of shoe makers like Nicholas Kirkwood and Edmundo Castillo, these designers remixed this style with geometric prints and brocade finishes, making them an 'it' item for spring 2013."

Where it's appropriate:

Either at work or on the weekends! Have a job where you're running around? A pointy flat will look professional, while remaining comfortable. The same goes for more casual attire. Something pointy, paired with jeans, a tee and cardigan looks put together, yet laid-back.

How to wear:

It's best to wear pointy flats with pants, rather than skirts. A skirt will put full attention on the feet, which could result in your feet looking big and long because they're flat on the floor.

How to: Fishtail braided bun hairstyle tutorial

$

This easy fishtail braided bun is perfect for medium length to long hair. Fishtail braids often seem complicated, but once you know the trick, you can create all kinds of hairstyles. The fishtail braid adds a beautiful texture to a simple side bun. Add a jeweled accessory to dress this hairstyle up for night.
1. Put your hair in a ponytail to the side. I like to loosen the hair a little so that it’s not too tight to my head.
2. Split your ponytail in two.
Hold one ponytail in each hand.
3. Fishtail braid your ponytail. Cross a small section from the left to the right.

5. Repeat on the right.
Take a small piece of hair from the right side of the right ponytail and put it in the left ponytail.

6. Repeat this process all the way down the ponytails. Each time, cross a small piece of hair from one ponytail to the other side. As you move down the ponytail, they cross over, forming the fishtail braid.
next steps

7. Tie the end of the braid.
Use a clear elastic as it’s small and won’t show in the finished style.

8. Stretch out your braid. The most important step! Gently pulling at the sides of your braid is the best trick to make your hair look thicker and fuller.

9. Twist the braid into a bun. Wind your braid up and around to form the bun.

10. Pin in place and you’re done! Try to push your bobby pins through the hair elastics to make the hairstyle more secure.

3 Bold MAC lip shades demonstrated for spring

$

Since I have such fair skin, I used to think that every lip shade I tried accentuated my blemishes or made me look like Casper. I was petrified of lipstick yet simultaneously so infatuated with it.

lip color

I’ve always had fair skin and I constantly struggled with color whether it was on my eyes or lips. That was before I entered the world of cosmetics and learned as much as I have about skin, color and makeup artistry.

With that, my biggest recommendation for rocking a bold lip is to analyze your skin and make sure that you have the correct foundation shade, texture and coverage for your own skin tone. Because guess what, ladies? Once you master the basics of your own skin profile, you can rock ANY lipstick. That's not an exaggeration.

Add a little confidence to the mix and everyone will want to know your lipstick secrets. To prove it, I’ve featured myself wearing three different shades so you know just how easy it is to rock different colors, even if you thought you couldn't because of your fair skin.

No maternity wear
for Kim Kardashian

Mom-to-be Kim Kardashian has been criticized by some for her pregnancy fashion choices. But does every pregnant woman have to wear maternity clothes? We say no — and Kim K. is proving our point with her pregnancy outfits.

Kim Kardashian might be due in July, but her changing body hasn't changed enough to get her to stop wearing the form-fitting clothes she's used to wearing. The Kourtney & Kim Take Miami star said she's embracing her baby body, but it's a learning process.

Kim Kardashian's pregnancy a big part of E!'s shows in 2013 >>

"I've found that I've gained inches and I've gotten wider but my belly hasn't popped yet, so I struggle finding things that don't make me look heavy," Kardashian wrote on her blog March 1. "At this stage I guess I'm more focused on concealing the weight gain than I am about dressing the bump, just because it hasn't popped yet."

That's not to say Kardashian isn't embracing actual maternity gear. The 31-year-old reality star added that she's wearing clothes from her Kardashian Kollection at Sears, along with some maternity pieces.

"My new J Brand maternity jeans are a blessing because they make me feel slim and comfortable, and I'm excited to try other looks!" she continued. "I heard Jet makes some amazing maternity jeans too. Once I start showing more I'll be all about showing off my bump, and I can't wait!"

Jenny Craig says "no" to Kim Kardashian >>

We'll be excited to see how she embraces her growing belly — will she adopt long, flowy dresses like those sister Kourtney wore during her two pregnancies? Or will she still be all about the form-fitting gear as she nears her July due date?

One thing we do know: Her child — reportedly a girl — will be mega fashionable, too.

"If anyone knows Kanye, they just know how into fashion he is, and I think he's going to have things specially made," she told Jimmy Kimmel in February.

"So I don't think hand-me-downs are going to work."

Online “deals” for cosmetic treatments

Buying cosmetic treatments can often times be a scary venture for some women. In a world filled with treatments for this and for that, how do you choose the one that is best for you? Woman on iPad thinking

To buy or not to buy?

Buying cosmetic treatments can be a scary venture for some women. In a world filled with treatments for this and for that, how do you choose the one that is best for you? Dr. Doris Day, a board-certified dermatologist, is here to help. Day has provided us with a few tips to make sure you're getting what you need while at the same time minimizing risk to your body.

What should you know before buying a cosmetic treatment online?

Everyone wants to get the best deal possible, and with online deals clogging our inboxes, it’s often hard to ignore them, especially at times when our wallets may be a little thinner than normal. When it comes to “deals” promising a cosmetic treatment, you may want to think twice before you cash in on them. Keep the following in mind to ensure that you have a positive and safe treatment.

First of all, and I hope this does go without saying, if the deal looks too good to be true, then you can bet it is. I strongly advise my patients to never cut corners when it comes to your health and beauty routines. Treat a cosmetic treatment like you would any medical procedure, only more so because it is elective. You should only seek treatment from a qualified medical physician and don’t skimp on doing research on their credentials.

Have your friends visited the practitioner you are considering? If so, get their opinions on the experience. As a next step, confirm that the physician is listed on the manufacturer's website of the product you are considering. It is always a good indication that the physician is purchasing product direct from the manufacturer.

How can you make sure you're getting what you paid for?

"Ask to see the vial of the product to see if it is the real thing."

Don't be afraid to ask about the treatment and confirm what brand of product the physician is going to use. It’s very important to know that there are no generics. You should ask for the brand by name because not all products are the same and should not be used interchangeably.

For example, when it comes to treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic, you might see a deal for "Botox,” yet you may get something different when you redeem your treatment. BOTOX Cosmetic is the brand name and there are no substitutes or generics. It is the only product that has been on the market for 10 years in the U.S., and as a result, physicians have a great deal of experience with this product. Also, ask to see the vial of the product to see if it is the real thing. For example, BOTOX Cosmetic vials will have an Allergan hologram right on the bottle.

How can you maximize your time with a new physician?

Many cosmetic treatments are not a one-time quick fix. I encourage you to seek out a physician that you would be comfortable with using for the long-term. To really improve the overall appearance and health of your skin, you should consider partnering up with a reputable skin care physician who can map out a personalized plan for you to follow.

Never hesitate to ask the physician what products they use on themselves. While everyone’s skin is different, you’ll be able to take an up-close and personal look at the physician and find out what works and why they recommend them. I encourage my patients to be vocal with me about their skin care concerns, and I approach each of them with a customized, gentle and easy-to-follow plan. It’s never too early to plan for successful aging!

The latest designer collaboration is here! Derek Lam for Kohl's is set to hit a store near you on April 5.

Blake Lively and Emmy Rossum

Okay, it's true: We get a little — or a lot — excited about designer collaborations with budget retailers. After all, it's probably the easiest — and least expensive — way we can get our mitts on gear from designers like Prabal Gurung and Missoni.

This one takes the cake, though: Designer Derek Lam has partnered with Kohl's for a Brazil-inspired collection that'll hit stores on April 5. Lam traveled to the South American nation to get inspiration for the line, which includes plenty of beach-worthy dresses and bold prints.

Ivanka Trump accused of ripping off Derek Lam design >>

"In Rio, I went everywhere. I enjoyed incredible meals, visited local artists and museums and enjoyed the beach. I was inspired by the atmosphere and engulfed in the culture,"Lam said of the collection.

"Rio de Janeiro is a city that bridges the old with the new, where you can't separate what is natural from what is man-made," Lam continued. "This DesigNation collection with Kohl's serves as an ally to modern women, embracing the spirit of Rio and providing beautiful, inspired clothing at an affordable price."

The pieces will range from $36 to $88 and will be on sale until mid-May. Our favorites? We're loving the Fittest Boatneck Dress worn by Emmy Rossum and the Tab-Collared Tunic worn recently by Blake Lively .

Adele at the 2013 Oscars

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Adele's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Adele won big at last month's Oscars, taking home the trophy for Best Original Song for "Skyfall." I'm not that interested in her award, though — I fell in love with her super cute 'do! To recreate the Old Hollywood look, I turned to her hairstylist Michael Ashton to get a step-by-step tutorial for getting the voluminous half updo.

Get the look

Michael Ashton used all John Frieda products to create Adele's chic 'do!

  1. Start by towel drying wet hair to remove excess moisture.
  2. Next, rub Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray on mid-lengths and ends.
  3. Before blow drying, flip hair over your head between your knees. To create lift at the roots and overall thickness, blast hot air down the hair shaft.
  4. Once locks are about 80 percent dry, flip hair back to normal position. Taking large sections, smooth them out with a medium sized round brush. Make sure you pay close attention to your ends to give them extra bounce.
  5. Now it's time to curl! Section strands into quarters and use a medium-large curling iron on each section.
  6. Then set hair in hot rollers. Once locks are cool, brush through very cautiously with a natural bristle brush.
  7. Repeat the curling process for the remaining three sections. After curling each section, make sure to pin it in a barrel curl using a sectioning clip while hair cools and sets.
  8. Give it five to 10 minutes, and then remove the sectioning clips and gently tousle hair. Pull back half of the hair and tease the crown, making sure to secure pieces together in the back of the head.
  9. Take two small sections and leave them down to frame the face. Finish by misting Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray .

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Mila Kunis and Jessica Alba

Mila Kunis and Jessica Alba's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Mila Kunis at the OZ The Great And Powerful

Mila Kunis

Oz the Great and Powerful premieres in theaters nationwide today, and we here at SheKnows couldn't be more excited to see it! One of the film's leading ladies, Mila Kunis, looked lovely in lace at the recent LA premiere, and I'm definitely crushing on her look.

You know those outfits that just make you want to smile? This is one of them! I can't help but think of prim and proper tea hours and ballet recitals when I look at this gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana lace dress. It's a little bit modern , a little bit classic and a whole lot of fun.

The final verdict? Mila kept her hair sleek and chic in the front but totally surprised me with the intricate back detail . Her silver bow peep toe heels and vibrant jewel tone earrings are the perfect complement to the overall look and pop so well on that Yellow Brick Road... err, carpet.

Jessica Alba at Paris Fashion Week

Jessica Alba

We're focusing a lot on hot moms this March, and there are few celeb moms who have hotter style than Miss Jessica Alba. The actress and fashionista showed up to the Stella McCartney show at Paris Fashion Week in this super cool pantsuit and landed herself on our best dressed list this week.

First of all, how cool are Jessica's pants ? The beaded detail stretches down the entire leg, and the blazer is lined with the same awesome accent. The actress paired her matching suit with a crisp white button down blouse, an edgy clutch and dark nails. I love the contradictions going on here: Menswear suit meets prim and proper blouse, edgy accessories meet feminine peplum blazer.

The final verdict? The beachy, laid-back hair really makes this look. If Jessica had worn her hair all fancy in an updo, it might have looked a bit stuffy, but the casual "I don't care" strands make this already neat look even cooler.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Jessica Chastain and Rihanna

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Jessica Chastain and Rihanna's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Jessica Chastian at Paris fashion Week

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain was one of our best dressed at the Oscars and all throughout awards season, but we don't know what she was thinking with this ensemble she chose for the Givenchy show during Paris Fashion Week. The Zero Dark Thirty actress wore a menswear-inspired pair of pants and jacket from Givenchy's Pre-Fall 2013 collection.

The high-waisted trousers are super baggy on Jessica's svelte frame and could use some serious tailoring. They also feature sheer lace panel cutouts, which not only look odd but seem like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. She's made it this far without suffering any overexposures, so why chance it by wearing these cutout pants? You can see she wore shorts underneath, but having to wear both shorts and pants seems silly to us.

The final verdict? You can't win everything all the time and this certainly isn't one of our favorite looks for Jess. We like that she changed up her coif and wore it straight with a center part for a change, though!

Rihanna at the Rihanna for River Island Collection

Rihanna

Did you know that Rihanna is now a designer as well as a musician? Yep, the "Diamonds" singer has released the Rihanna for River Island Collection, a UK-based fashion line. She celebrated her designer debut during a party at DSTRKT nightclub in London wearing this getup, which gives a whole new meaning to "denim on denim."

She's wearing her own line, but why in the world would anyone rock two pairs of jeans at once?! She seems to be channeling Justin Bieber's saggy pants style with the darker pair of denim that she cuffed. Riri wore a lighter colored pair of jeans underneath and completed the look with high heeled sandals. These retail for $150, and apparently, not everyone agrees with us on these being awful, as they're sold out on the site.

The final verdict? There's really never a reason to wear two pairs of jeans, is there? We think not! Just pick one pair of pants next time, please and thanks! However, her hair and makeup are on point and the crop top shows off her killer abs.

lunch looks

Sometimes as moms, a lunch date/meeting is the only sort of social interaction we get to squeeze into the week! And because your short time away from home comes in between running kids around, you need to choose an outfit that can be versatile and functional!

Lunch dates are always a nice break during the hectic day. As moms, we get so busy between work and kids and errands that it can be tough to simply dress up just for our lunch dates.

That's why you should opt for something that is classic and stylish but will also work for your busy day. Maybe pick a pair of comfortable jeans and layer on a forgiving tunic , and then to really add some style flair, finish the look off with a fab biker jacket. And of course, don't forget the cute AND comfy heels!

Summer's outfit

I love getting together with my friends for lunch, especially in those rare moments when we happen to be child-free! Generally, we are all pretty casual, so it's not unusual to see me sporting jeans and a tunic with a fun jacket, and of course, a super small but comfy heel. I love cute shoes, but I save the uncomfortable ones for a sitting day only!

Outfit details:

  • Jeans: Seven for all Mankind
  • Tunic: Thrifted
  • Leather jacket: Apple Bottom Jeans from a consignment store
  • Wedges: Steve Madden
  • Purse:Fashion Junkee

Look younger without cosmetic surgery

From a wellness perspective, CLA , which is found in safflower oil, has shown to help with overall health, from reducing body fat, decreasing cancer risk and preventing heart disease. Now CLA has been shown to work in skin care products to prevent signs of aging. Learn more about how the latest retinol and CLA technologies are skin care powerhouses that will improve smoothness, clarity, wrinkles and hydration with limited skin irritation.

Retinol

 RoC Deep Wrinkle Serum

Retinol comes from the retinoid family, a derivative of vitamin A. This powerful vitamin increases skin cell turnover and improves collagen production to improve wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne. Retinol comes in different strengths — from prescription strength to professional skin care and over-the-counter, such as RoC Deep Wrinkle Serum .

In the early days of retinols, redness, flakiness and skin sensitivity were often concerns. And while it's best to check with your dermatologist to determine the best formula for your face, some of the non-prescription formulas have improved and you can get great results without a prescription. If you do use a non-prescription retinol product, try to make sure that it's either a pure retinol or has a higher level of active retinol. Some products might only contain 0.1 percent retinol, which may not produce the results you are hoping to see .

Nowadays, retinols are also combined with other skin care actives to work on multiple issues. For example, PCA Skin’s Intensive Clarity Treatment infuses antioxidants and botanicals together with 0.5 percent pure retinol to help with inflammation due to acne breakouts and reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation. In the over-the-counter world, formulas such as Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair include a retinol serum that boosts moisture at the same time with hyaluronic acid.

Some key points to remember when using a retinol are to start slowly. Use the smallest amount possible. You can even alternate evenings when you do use it and build up from there as you get used to it. Retinols can also replace other anti-aging serums. If you combine the ingredient with other exfoliators , you run the risk of irritating your skin and causing damage.

Next, remember to use your retinol product on a regular basis and choose the right formula for your skin. Celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Chiu of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery says that one of the biggest mistakes women make in terms of skin care is not to be consistent in using their products. Or, they use the wrong product because they believe the marketing hype. Finally, always use a sunscreen when using a retinol product — your skin will be much more sensitive.

CLA

Own Firming Silk Concentrate

Another new technology in the skin care arena is the use of conjugated linoleic acid in actual skin care creams . So how exactly does this new power agent work? First of all, CLA helps skin retain moisture by boosting ceramide synthesis in skin cells; this fortifies the skin barrier and helps to retain moisture in the skin.

CLA is a natural ingredient that allows for skin renewal without harsh chemicals or treatments. It allows you to treat all three layers of the skin to create healthy skin from deep down.

One company doing remarkable work with CLA is Own Skin Care. The CLA in Own Skin Care works naturally, with your own body's chemistry, to activate skin renewing processes and rebuild those structures. One product to try is the Own Firming Silk Concentrate . For women who want to focus on natural beauty technologies, CLA is an important compound to include in their anti-aging routines.

Lauren Conrad at the Cotton 24 Hour Runway Show

Reality star turned designer Lauren Conrad co-hosted the Cotton 24 Hour Runway Show last weekend in Miami. SheKnows caught up with LC to find out what her budget beauty secret is and what her spring wardrobe essentials are!

Snag her must-haves

From Laguna Beach to South Beach! MTV reality starlet Lauren Conrad hit Miami for Cotton's 24 Hour Runway Show, which featured 1,440 looks all made of cotton. Ever conscious of the cameras, LC changed out of her original yellow dress she planned to wear due to the windy weather in Miami Saturday. She instead chose a red Black Halo dress that was less prone to a wardrobe malfunction with the gusty winds, which is just another reason we love her style!

SheKnows: What do you love about cotton?

Lauren Conrad: I love the feel of cotton and the way it lets the skin breathe. I am also impressed by how versatile a fabric it is!

SK: What are some great staples women should add to their closets for spring and summer?

LC: A maxi dress, a colorful cardigan and one item with a spring print.

SK: What do you think of the mod look that seems to be coming back?

LC: I think the mod look really plays well with the black and white trend we are seeing now.

SK: Nail polish colors you can't wait to wear for spring?

LC: I love a light green, almost teal nail.

SK: Is there a beauty brand or product you can't live without?

LC: So many but my favorite is simple, Aquaphor.

SK: Currently, what's your favorite thing in your closet?

LC: My vintage Chanel bag.

SK: Who's your celebrity style icon?

LC: Sadly I don’t have one! I always get asked this, so I really need to find one. There are just so many people I admire.

Want to know the secret to the perfect top knot? There’s a little surprise inside the bun. Using a special donut-shaped padding creates the perfect top knot every time. These hair donuts are like a Wonderbra for your hair. They form the ideal shape every time. This is such a quick and easy hairstyle that it will have you out the door looking fab in only a few minutes. The top knot is great for second day hair too, as your hair will hold the shape even better.

Supplies:

  • A brush — I like a paddle brush or a bristle brush
  • A comb
  • An elastic
  • Bobby pins
  • Donut-shaped padding

Instructions:

1

Gather your hair into a high ponytail. I find this is easier if I flip my head over and brush my hair up, but whatever works for you! Make sure you have a strong elastic to hold your hair in the high ponytail.

How to: Top knot hairstyle tutorial

2

Pop your donut padding around your ponytail. Try to use padding that is close to your natural hair color.

How to: Top knot hairstyle tutorial

3

Tease your hair. Gently backcomb your ponytail to create more volume so you have enough hair to cover the donut.

How to: Top knot hairstyle tutorial

4

Hide the donut by wrapping your hair around it. Find the center of your ponytail and wrap your hair around evenly to cover the donut. Use bobby pins to secure the ends of your hair. You can also tuck your hair under the donut to keep it neat.

How to: Top knot hairstyle tutorial

5

Finish with a spritz of hairspray to smooth any fuzzy flyaways. I like to smooth around my hairline, but I still keep the bun a little messy so that it looks more natural.

How to: Top knot hairstyle tutorial

tip

Tease the ponytail and wrap the top knot so that your hair is a little messy. Pull at a few sections of hair to keep it a little uneven and more natural looking so you can’t see an exact outline of the donut padding.

Amanda Bynes looks way different

Amanda Bynes is showing off a dramatically different look. Like, really different.

Amanda Bynes

Is that Amanda Bynes or Nicki Minaj?

That's seriously the reaction we had when we saw the TwitPic Bynes posted over the weekend. In the shot, the She's All That star shows off an obvious curly blond wig, heavy fake lashes and nude lips — along with the cheek piercing she got earlier this year.

"Wink,"she wrote with the shot.

She looks good, but we definitely prefer the healthy and happy Bynes — like the one in the photo here.

The post is just another chapter in the weird, sad saga of the former Nickelodeon star. Most recently, she talked about her desire to drop 20 pounds off her already-thin frame.

"I gain weight quickly so I need to work out constantly,"she told US Weekly earlier this year. "I moved to New York City and I love it! I lost 4 lbs. since I moved. I'm 121 lbs — my goal is 100 lbs."

The problem? That would put the 5-foot-8-inch star at a seriously unhealthy BMI of 15. Let's hope someone can get through to her.

As for what else she's doing these days? Apparently she's getting into the fashion work.

"I am retired as an actor," she told People last fall. "I am moving to New York to launch my career. I am going to do a fashion line."

Maybe the Minaj look is a preview of what we can expect from her as a designer? C'mon girl, we're ready for your Britney Spears-esque comeback!
