The pros and cons of breast implants

$
0
0
No two women have the same body, and similarly, no two breasts are the same even when they belong to the same woman. Breast augmentation, therefore, is as much an art as it is a science. Determining what’s right for you – from the size and type of implant to its placement within the body – starts here.

Woman contemplating breast implant

How big should I go?

Breast augmentation is not one-size-fits-all. Your best friend may be rocking double D’s, but your figure may be better suited for a C cup. Take your existing body proportions into account, communicate your desired outcome to your surgeon and consider his or her feedback before making a decision about implant size.

Tip: Breast implant sizes are usually discussed in terms of milliliters, referring to the volume of silicone gel or saline within the implant shell. If you’re unsure, ask your surgeon to “translate” these numbers to an approximate cup size.

Silicone or saline?

Breast implants may be filled with either silicone gel or a sterile saline solution . While most patients prefer silicone gel, as it moves and feels very much akin to natural breast tissue, the choice is up to you. One way to find the best fit for you is to hold samples of each kind during your consultation.

Can implants pose health risks?

Tip: Some surgeons believe placing the implant below the pectoral muscle and using a textured implant shell can help minimize the incidence of capsular contracture. Discuss these options with your surgeon during your pre-operative consultation.

Breast augmentation with implants is a safe and widely performed procedure, with over 300,000 surgeries performed last year, according to the 2011 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report . That being said, all surgeries carry some risk.

The most common side effect of breast augmentation with implants is a condition known as “capsular contracture.” This refers to the growth of firm, internal scar tissue around the implant, which can cause hardening and physical distortion of the breast. The causes are unknown, and the condition requires surgery to replace the affected implant.

Are there alternatives to implants?

Although implants remain the most popular technique for breast augmentation, you may wish to consider fat transfer. Fat transfer breast augmentation is a surgical technique in which the patient’s own fat is removed via liposuction from donor areas on the body , purified and then injected into the breasts.

Fat transfer breast augmentation eliminates many of the risks posed by implants, including capsular contracture. However, it cannot provide the same range of sizes and results are usually far more subtle than those afforded by breast implants.

If you're interested in both liposuction and breast augmentation, fat transfer can be a cost-effective way to achieve both. Talk to your surgeon about the possibility of a combination procedure.

What if I change my mind?

Although breast implants should be considered a long-term investment, we understand that women’s minds and bodies change over time. Even if you’ve undergone breast augmentation, surgical options do exist – such as breast implant removal and breast revision – to address your needs down the line.

Finally, remember that breast augmentation – as with any plastic surgery – should be performed only for you. Your health and happiness are paramount. Everything else will follow.

From Greece to India to Southeast Asia, investigative reporter and celebrity journalist Lisa Ling has no doubt seen the world. Here, she tells SheKnows about some of the beauty secrets she’s picked up, the makeup and skin care products she absolutely can’t live without and what we can learn from all the gorgeous women across the globe.

SheKnows: You’re known to travel around the world quite a bit. How would you compare women of other cultures to those in America?

Ling: No matter where you are in the world, women have the desire to look beautiful and to be healthy. They just practice those things in different ways. I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot, and I try to live my life in the most natural way possible. I’ve found that in the world, you can find less processed stuff, as opposed to here in America.

SheKnows: In all your traveling, have you picked up any crazy beauty tips specific to other regions?

Ling: I first tasted Greek yogurt when I went to Santorini, Greece and fell in love with it right away . Using a plain Greek yogurt mask is super hydrating and moisturizing for your skin, particularly if it’s dry like mine. I love coconut oil as well, which women in Belize have long used to ease their fine lines and wrinkles and to soften dry skin. I apply it all over my body and even put in my hair as a conditioner.

SheKnows: As an ethnic woman yourself, how do you take care of your skin?

Ling: I use aloe vera wipes, which I first heard about in Paris, because I’m really prone to dry skin in general. To remove my makeup, I like moisturizing wipes, and I’m really into AmorePacific products because they use a lot of green tea extract. I never leave my house without sunblock either!

Mom knows best: "My mom always tells me when I apply my moisturizer to pat my skin and to apply it in an upward direction, not downwards, otherwise I’ll pull my skin down."

SheKnows: What is the best beauty advice you received from your mother or grandmother?

Ling: [laughs] Well, my mom is quite obsessive about her beauty regimen. I think Asian women tend to be. When they laugh, they laugh with a pouty mouth so they don’t get laugh lines. My mom always tells me when I apply my moisturizer to pat my skin and to apply it in an upward direction, not downwards, otherwise I’ll pull my skin down.

SheKnows: When it comes to makeup, you seem to take a less is more approach, so what are your go to products?

Kimiko Hydrating Tint SPF 20 MoisturizerLing: There’s this amazing product, it’s American but by a Japanese woman, Kimiko Hydrating Tint SPF 20 Moisturizer. I never wear foundation during the day, so it’s terrific because you get that tint, but it’s also a sunblock. I love Make Up Forever black liquid eyeliner as well. But if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only have a few products, I’d have an eyebrow pencil and an eyelash curler!

SheKnows: Do you recall any women from your travels who taught you anything specific about skin care that has stuck with you?

Ling: My Korean relatives are really into facial exercises; Asian women have strong, tight skin and take it very seriously! The most important thing anyone ever tells me though is to stay out of the sun and to wear sunscreen. I always tan my body during the summer, but when I’m laying out I make sure to cover my face with aloe.

SheKnows: How do the values that women of other cultures place on beauty differ from those in America?

Ling: I think that many Asian cultures in particular really try to stay out of the sun. Not only do they think it doesn’t look as good, but they realize it has a devastating impact on your skin. That’s why Asian women often look a lot younger; they don’t have a sun worshipping culture like we do. I’m an American so I love laying out. I’m just very cautious about the sun on my face.

"I love coconut oil as well, which women in Belize have long used to ease their fine lines and wrinkles and to soften dry skin."
Women in Korea

"My Korean relatives are really into facial exercises; Asian women have strong, tight skin and take it very seriously!"
Woman in India

India

"I’ve been really impressed by the women in India. It’s so congested there and there are so many toxins in the air, but they’re able to maintain such a natural beauty."

SheKnows: Out of everywhere you’ve been, which culture of women were you most intrigued by and why? How do you think we can all learn from each other?

Ling: It’s hard to give an example of just one culture. However, I’ve been really impressed by the women in India. It’s so congested there and there are so many toxins in the air, but they’re able to maintain such a natural beauty. From a health perspective, I’m a yoga practitioner, which has been practiced for centuries in India as a way to free the mind, body and spirit. What I love about it is that it’s a total body workout that also allows you to have a mental clarity. I think we’re predisposed to thinking that our culture is the best, and I’ve always benefited so much from really learning from other cultures and being open minded about different people’s approaches to living and beauty regimens.

SheKnows: America is very much a youth obsessed society. How would you say other cultures compare when it comes to anti-aging?

"I definitely think that America and Asia are pretty high up there in terms of paranoia about aging."

Ling: I definitely think that America and Asia are pretty high up there in terms of paranoia about aging. Plastic surgery is rampant in China because there’s so much pressure on women to look younger and to be beautiful. We all fall victim to it because pop stars and celebrities are young, but I think it can become detrimental. When I go to Italy and Greece, I see so many women who haven’t had work done and that’s really refreshing. They’re not as afraid of it as we are. Aging is actually appreciated in other parts of the world because with it comes wisdom.

SheKnows: Long hair is often considered a symbol of beauty. From your experience, is this true in other cultures?

Ling: I think there gets to be a point when long hair isn’t as flattering as you get older. I feel like I’m getting to that point. I always have the same hairstyle because it’s so easy! Like right now, my hair is soaking wet. I do appreciate in America though that people are willing to take more risks with their hair. My best friend switches up her hairstyle like, every few months! I wish I was more daring, but I do think long or short hair is beautiful. It all just depends on your face shape.

Girlfriend spa getaway: G Spa at Foxwoods in Connecticut

We check into beauty expert Gretta Monahan's luxe G Spa at Foxwoods in Connecticut and spa away. Join us as we recap our spa-mazing experience, and grab some inspiration for your next getaway!

Foxwood G Spa

Sometimes a gal just needs to get away, you know? So when television personality Gretta Monahan recently invited me and a friend to check out the luxurious G Spa, I packed my bags before you could say mani or pedi! So how did the spa measure up, and should you visit it yourself? Well, let's just say I'm feeling relaxed just thinking about it!

Where is it?

The luxurious 21,000 square foot G Spa is located on the third floor of MGM Grand at Foxwoods’ 30-story hotel tower in Mashantucket, Connecticut, which means you can check in for some serious pampering in a posh hotel to boot.

G Spa

The menu

G Spa boasts a pretty fab menu filled with hair, nail, massage, facial and body treatments. Some of the most popular ones? G Sweet Spa & Tempting Yogurt Mani, G Spa Signature Facial and Hot Rocks Therapy. And oh yeah, the spa's famous "quickie" mini-services for the girl on the go are also pretty awesome.

The highlights

The spa has a relaxing vibe with impeccable decor. In fact, my friend Kayla and I both remarked at the gorgeous Roman-like pool area at the same exact moment. Besides that and the obviously welcoming staff, I was quite impressed with the little touches the spa paid so much attention to, including the vast array of complimentary drinks and shower supplies and the adorable robes.

The atmosphere

Whenever I check into a spa, I always take a look at my surroundings to see just how well put together the space is and how many amenities it has. I was very impressed with G Spa!

Not only does it have an outside deck that overlooks an amazing view, it also has a huge restroom and changing area space -- filled with goodies like shower caps, razors and the like -- a full-service health and fitness club with an indoor lap pool and a state-of-the-art Life Fitness Cardio Loop. Overwhelmed yet? Yep, I was too! But in a totally good way.

How to create a DIY spa experience at home >>

G SpaMust-try treatment

One of my faves? The G Quench Pedicure! For $70, you'll enjoy 45 minutes of skin-softening, polishing and massaging. And oh yeah, a gorgeous new polish job. Word of advice? Try the amazing massaging pedicure chairs while you're being pampered away... you won't regret it.

Another one of my must-trys? The G Spa Original Splurge, a 50 or 80-minute full body massage.

Fun fact:  To pay respect to its Native American hosts, G Spa at MGM Grand developed a series of Native American-inspired services. Services like the Spa Red Clay Mani/Pedi and Spa Maize Body Scrub feature traditional cultural goodies such as clay, maize and various herbs.

What to do

The best part of G Spa? You never really have to leave! With such a huge menu and relaxation areas abounding, you hardly need to leave the spa at all, but when you do want to come up for air, you're in luck. Right downstairs from the spa, you can head into the nightlife of Foxwoods and check out the casino, the comedy shows and all those delicious restaurants. In other words: Can I move in?

The bottom line? Who knew that a casino could house such a relaxing and gorgeous spa? Now that I know, I will definitely be returning.

Woman and boyfriend in bathroom

how to groom your guy

So you’re wearing the boyfriend jeans, you’ve got on the boyfriend tee and possibly the blazer, too. You’re looking good, and your boyfriend could take some notes. Now what to do about your boyfriend’s hair products? Do you really have an influence?

The answer is yes! Guys will listen to their girl's recommendations when it comes to grooming and haircare. So if you want him to take a step up from his Axe gel, we’ve got a list of great products for you to choose from that will add texture and control to your man’s ‘do.

Hans de Fuku has a broad spectrum of waxes, creams and pomades that I guarantee he will love.

surf spray from Bumble and Bumble

My next fave would be Sumo tech by Bumble and Bumble, which is your best option for a non-greasy textured look.

For that long-haired look like the one I’ve done on Brad Pitt, use the surf spray from Bumble and Bumble. It’s great for when you stay over at his place and need something for your hair, but don’t want him to think you’ve moved in and need your own drawer.

For a really fresh-smelling paste, try the Number 4 hair care texture styling crème. You can’t go wrong with this one. It has a great light hold and is 100 percent vegan and sulphate-free for the eco-conscious man.

Fiber paste

One more final product your guy will love is the Phyto Fiber paste. This is an essential product!

If your man also needs some new skin care products, you can’t go wrong with Recipe for Men’s entire treatment line. It’s tailored for your man’s personal care but you can definitely benefit from it as well!

The bottom line?

All in all, you'll want to make sure your boyfriend has a bathroom stocked with products that will help create a great modern look but that have just enough flexibility to help you benefit from them, too! You can simply recommend these products to your guy or be a little creative and get him a little care package. He’ll really appreciate it -- trust me.

Hope you’ve been wearing your sunscreen, hats and sunnies. I’m off to the Hamptons for the gay wedding of the year! Get ready for my Labor Day breakout hair looks article, coming soon!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Rita Ora and Tara Reid

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Rita Ora and Tara Reid's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the celebrities' fashion mistakes!

Rita Ora

Rita Ora

In case you don't know, Rita Ora is a British singer. She's Jay-Z's newest protege and is supposed to be the next Rihanna of sorts. And considering she wore this flaming fashion disaster, we can certainly see the comparison between the two musicians beyond their vocals.

Midriff-baring outfits are trendy right now, but this PVC outfit is a fiery mess. The material looks cheap and tacky and matching flames are so not cool.

To add fuel to the fugly flame, Rita paired her ensemble with a pair of hightop sneakers and huge earrings. Someone turn the hose on her stylist!

The final verdict? This whole outfit can't be saved. Burn the whole thing and start over, babe!

Tara Reid

Tara Reid

Poor Tara Reid... the American Pie actress seems to be stuck in a time warp as she leaves Zuma restaurant in London. Listen, sweetie, it's not 1999 so we don't really understand why you're wearing ripped flared jeans and a babydoll tee.

And what about those messy blonde extensions? There are so many natural looking options these days that we really can't understand why she's rocking these blunt, bleached out hair pieces.

Also, Zuma is an upscale restaurant, Tara. You're not going to happy hour at TGI Friday's. Dress it up a bit!

The final verdict? We know there was an American Pie sequel, but it's time for Tara to update her style already. Then again, at least her ladyparts are all covered up this time, so we suppose that's progress of some sort.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Nicole Richie and Ashley Greene

Nicole Richie and Ashley Greene's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie

Is anyone else super excited to see Nicole Richie's new collection hit Macy's this September? I certainly am! This week, the Fashion Star judge launched her new fragrance, 'Nicole,' at Macy's in LA looking as lovely as ever.

Nicole showed off her petite frame in a cream colored smock dress with subtle ruffle detailing. She topped off the look with brown and gold trimmed booties and metallic jewelry. And oh yeah, what about those enviable bangs? They were her best accessory!

The final verdict? Really pretty, Nicole. Sometimes her fashions err on the over the top boho end, but here she looks soft and sweet.

Ashley Greene

Ashley Greene

Talk about pretty in pink! Ashley Greene dazzled in her bright pink strapless Donna Karan Atelier gown this week at the LA premiere of her new film, The Apparition.

You don't have to convince me to fall in love with a pink gown, but it's the gorgeous draping on this dress that really got me. And that side slit is so on trend right now. If you zoom on in, you'll see that Ash kept her accessories pretty simple here -- adorable spiked Jimmy Choos and a pretty jeweled ring -- so her dress could be the real statement maker.

The final verdict? This color works so well with Ashley's amazing skin tone and it fits her like a glove. I want one!

We're obsessed!

We have a total hairstyle crush on Bridgit Mendler's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Let me introduce you to the most popular look in Hollywood the past month: the side swept bombshell hair. And Disney's Bridgit Mendler was caught sporting the amazing look this week on Much Music's NEW.MUSIC.LIVE while promoting her upcoming album 'Hello My Name Is...'

Let's take a moment to marvel at its awesomeness, shall we? First off, I'm obsessed with waves, curls and texture. I'm a curly girlie and I'm not a big fan of stick straight styles with no volume or oomph. And what I also love about this look is its versatility: You can totally dress it up or down depending on your outfit choice and your mood. Here, Bridgit dressed hers down with a fun graphic T-shirt, but we've seen plenty of other starlets sport their glam waves with eveningwear this season.

We're loving Bridgit's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments! And check out other celebrity hairstyles!

Secrets of the red carpet

You've got questions, and we've got answers! SheKnows' contributing beauty and style expert, Luke Reichle, is taking your submissions and dishing out no-fuss answers! Today, Luke is sharing his insights on how to handle re-creating your image after surviving breast cancer. He's got some great tips!

Dear Luke,

I am a breast cancer survivor. As part of my treatment, I had a single mastectomy. Do you know anyone that might create clothing for women with only one breast? The problem for me is that the blouses, shirts and dresses shift to the side of the one breast.

Thanks in advance,

Linda

Luke responds

Dear Linda,

I don’t think I know anyone whose life has not been touched in some way by breast cancer. For those of you dealing directly with the disease, its treatment and recovery, re-creating your image in the aftermath can be challenging to say the least. Fortunately, there are several options to help you out. Here are a couple to explore.

Woman in 60s shopping for clothesWear clothing engineered for breast asymmetry

Although not readily available at retail stores, there are companies online that offer some pretty fabulous styling for post-surgery silhouettes.

Chikara is a collection of clothing, swimwear, lingerie and activewear that has a fabulous level of design. The pieces are modern with clean, simple lines.

The other company with some great styling is Bobbi Fuller. A cancer survivor herself, Ms. Fuller saw the need for interesting bust balancing options and designed her way to filling it.

Balance your figure with prosthetics

Many women either elect not to have, or are not candidates for, reconstructive surgery. But even for those who do choose to go that route, it’s common that the breasts will come out each a different size. There is a wide range of prosthetic solutions to help you achieve parity with your pair.

Curves

The silicone breast enhancers now in common use in the fitting rooms of Hollywood were originally developed for post-mastectomy prosthesis. The great thing about them is that as they warm to your body temperature, they behave like flesh in that they fall and move more as a unit with your true tissue. They have drawbacks in that women find that they make them sweat and can feel heavy with long-term wear. You may find it best to use them for special occasions, especially when your garments are more clinging or revealing. The brand I find most consistent in quality is Curves, though many more have appeared on the market in recent years. They come in a range of smaller shapes that are very useful in balancing out the results of a lumpectomy.

Comfort-Lite

Comfort-Lite, a brand found at tlcdirect.org, gets its name from being up to 50 percent lighter than Curves, with a fabric backing that cuts down on perspiration. The shape of this product is one of the most realistic.

Jodee Feather-Weight

In the realm of foam, the Jodee Feather-Weight breast form is ideal for travel, sleeping and exercise and is one of the products recommended for use right after surgery. These and other affordable basics can be found at jcpenney-jodee.com.

No matter the solution you land on, wearing a properly weighted breast form can help not only in your emotional recovery, but will also reduce spine curving and shoulder problems caused by weight asymmetry after a mastectomy.

I’ve only scratched the surface here. If you’ve read this article and have something helpful to add, please leave a comment. And share it with your friends. Our greatest resource in any recovery process is each other.

Celebrity body "flaws"

$

What is it about celebrities that makes us feel so self-conscious about our looks? Hmm... maybe their amazing bodies, stunning beauty and flawless skin? But doesn't all that perfection get a little boring? The next time you're obsessing over how you look in a bikini or considering a little facial sculpting, think of these celebrities who have embraced their “flaws.”
Anna Paquin
Jessica Pare
Kirsten Dunst

 “Bad” teeth

You'd think bad teeth would be the first thing celebrities would fix. No personal trainers or plastic surgeons required. A simple visit to the dentist, and voila -- perfect pearly whites. These smart ladies know beauty and character go hand in hand, and have no intention of messing with their God-given choppers.

  • Anna Paquin -- Following in the tradition of the great Lauren Bacall, actress Anna Paquin has a rather large gap between her two front teeth and no plans to fix it. In a sea of hot young actresses, she stands out because of her so-called “imperfection.” Photo credit: WENN
  • Jessica Pare -- You know her as Mrs. Megan Draper. And if you're a Mad Men fan, you've probably noticed her somewhat horsey teeth. Pare told New York Magazine, “I’m actually really self-conscious about them. But I never wanted to change my teeth because they’re mine, and I don’t know what I’d look like without them.”
  • Kirsten Dunst -- You'd think that an actress who began her acting career in a vampire movie would be self-conscious about her Dracula-like teeth. Nope. Dunst once told Elle UK “I love my snaggle fangs. They give me character and character is sexy."

Marilyn Monroe

Cindy Crawford

Celebrity moles

Call it a mole, a birthmark or a beauty spot. The fact remains -- it's a dark, raised lump and it's on your face. Sure you could have it removed, but these gorgeous women have done just fine with their bodacious beauty marks.

  • Marilyn Monroe -- Marilyn practically made moles synonymous with glamour. Her platinum curls, pouty red lips and prominent beauty mark were key elements of this icon's signature look.
  • Cindy Crawford -- Sexy supermodel Cindy Crawford is known for her dark mole located just above her lip. She once starred in a chocolate commercial where she licked it off! Photo credit: WENN
Kim Kardashian
Jennifer Lopez
Rihanna

Curvy figures

We love these women for dissing Hollywood's obsession with being thin. Here's to the curvy celebrities who celebrate their womanly figures.

  • Kim Kardashian -- Move over, skinny blondes. Buxom, dark-haired bombshell Kim Kardashian has sexy curves galore, and flaunts them with skin-tight clothing. She's even launching a plus-sized denim line at Sears with her sisters. It's called Kardashian Kurves.
  • Jennifer Lopez -- J. Lo is the original booty queen. Some say it's her big sexy butt that helped launch her successful singing, dancing and acting career. Of course talent had a little something to do with it, but she sure knew how to make an “asset” out of something most women might have tried to shrink on the Stairmaster.
  • Rihanna -- Not all celebrities have been celebrated for their curves. Rihanna has received plenty of criticism for her fluctuating weight and generous curves. Her response? "I realized that I actually like my body, even if it's not perfect according to the book. I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don't want to get rid of the curves. I just want to tone it up. My body is comfortable, and it's not unhealthy, so I'm going to rock with it," she said in an interview with Vogue magazine. You go, girl.

Low, loose updo

This low, loose updo is as effortless as it is chic. Lightly twist the front pieces before pinning last. Mist with hairspray to finish a look that is perfect for any occasion. .

Jessica’s messy ponytail is almost too easy. This style looks best the day after you’ve styled it wavy. Lightly tease your hair at the crown and pull back into a low ponytail. Pull two pieces out of the pony to frame your face. To make this style office and event appropriate, add statement earrings.

Minka Kelly's side braid

Side braid

This side braid is perfect for the day after you wore your hair straight and smooth. Use the natural oils in your hair to your advantage! The oils make second day hair easier to manage when trying an elaborate style. Moving your part to the side can also help distribute the oils instead of pooling them into a greasy mess.

Kate Hudson's wavy hairstyle

Simple waves

Simple waves are the absolute easiest style to re-wear the next day. Revive your second day waves by using your fingers to comb through, catching any tangles. If you are lucky enough to have a natural wave, just mist with hairspray, scrunch, and go. If not, you might need to use a large barrel curling iron to amp your style back up.

Accessorize your hair

Accessorize

Also consider accessorizing. This is the perfect time to wear a headband, bandana or chunky hair accessory. We are predicting hats as one of fall’s biggest trends. When all else fails, try a straw fedora or slouchy beanie to cover your tresses.

Want to go a third day?

Want to make that second day hair stretch to a third? Avoid a greasy head with dry shampoo. I use Kenra Platinum Dry Shampoo to avoid my normal cleansing routine for another day. Simply hold 1-inch from the greasy area, spray, and tousle.

We hope you enjoyed the scoop on stretching your style. Now you can use that time you saved shampooing for more important things... like researching some ways to keep your style fresh this fall.

An ombre gel manicure

We recently sat down with the blonde bombshell who is responsible for Nail Files on TV Guide Network. One of the hot trends she raved about was the ombre manicure. We, of course, couldn't resist, so here's her take on going ombre with gel polish at home.

The road to ombre

There have been several different takes on the ombre manicure trend to hit the web -- and we're adding to the pot. Katie's version is nude , sparkly and easy to do at home. We love that!

First and foremost, you're going to need an at-home gel kit. It's a bit of a splurge, but if you're into making your manicures last longer, it's worth it! Our advice? Scour the beauty market and sites like Amazon and eBay to find one in your price range. Plan B? Try it with traditional nail polish!

Beauty Beat: How to create an ombre nail design

Katie Cazorla demonstrates an at-home gel manicure, ombre style.

Base coats are always important, but even more so when it comes to doing a gel polish manicure. "It's how all the rest of your gel colors or art is going to adhere to your nail," said Katie.

Ombre nail instructions:

Step 1: Always apply a base gel.

Step 2: Remember, you're going to cure your nails between each coat using the LED light that comes with your gel kit.

Step 3: Apply a coat of the lightest color on the whole nail bed.

Step 4: Apply the darker shade on half of the nail bed. Don't worry about creating perfect lines! You want it to look organic.

Step 5: Apply another coat of the darker color slightly above the halfway point from step 4.

Step 6: Repeat the previous step until you've achieved the desired ombre effect.

Step 7: Add a coat of glitter for extra pizzazz and seal it all in with a top coat.

And when it comes to curing between each of your coats, the time can vary, but it's generally anywhere between 30 seconds to a minute.

Another great thing about gel manicures, per Katie, is that it's really easy to get creative and experimental with your nail designs.

"If you make a mistake, you can just wipe it off, as with [regular] polish you have to wipe everything off and start from the beginning. Once the color has been cured, you're in the clear."

We're partnering up with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your most pressing hair questions. Up today? Justine Piecuch, a stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, is showing us how to get effortless, flexible hair that moves.

Woman with healthy wavy hair

Your question

How can I give hair movement and flexibility and also make it look effortlessly wavy at the same time?

@Sushiii01 via Twitter

Justine's answer!

This is a common type of question that I hear all the time. After all, we all want hair that moves and flows and blows in the wind. Now achieving it: That may be a different story.

The first thing I would say to getting hair like this is start with a good foundation: a haircut. And not just any old haircut. A great haircut will be tailored at the end by removing weight lines that are causing the hair to stack on top of itself. By removing the weight lines, the hair becomes seamless.

This technique is NOT to be done with thinning sheers, which can cause the hair to be wispy, fly away and sometimes frizzy. Make sure you're getting this cut from someone who truly knows their skill. Finding this stylist can be very tough, but I recommend doing some online research or asking someone with the hair you want where they go.

The rest of the work is easy from here. Split the hair into two sections, separating the top and bottom. Using a curling iron or a clip less curling iron , take one to two inches in width vertical sections, place the barrel in the middle and wrap the hair around and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat this all over the head until everything is complete.

This is how you'll get your flowing wave. Make sure the hair is dry before doing this and that you've used a thermal protectant to avoid any damage. Styling like this is very simple and shouldn't be given much thought for the best end result.

Be patient with your search and styling technique. If you have some questions, a good stylist will always take you through the steps and show you the correct way. Always remember to simply have fun with hair. After all, it's just another accessory!

Top 5 fall beauty trends

Not sure what to add to your makeup repertoire this fall? We have you covered. From lids and brows to lips and cheeks, we have the scoop on the hottest beauty looks for a brand new season.

Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow trio in Filter

Chocolate smoky eye

Dramatic eyes are back this season but with a decidedly neutral twist. We spied rich smoky eyes in brown on several fall runways and the look is both evening-ready and office-friendly. Create the chocolate brown smoky eye by layering several shades of brown on your lids for a gorgeous fall beauty look.

Try it: Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow trio in Filter , which features two shades of brown and a soft ivory.

Try it: Lorac Breakthrough Performance Lipstick in Icon, a deep plum .

Bold lips, bare face

Bare faces with get-noticed lips were spied at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Narciso Rodriguez and we can’t get enough of this sophisticated fall makeup trend. Start by applying concealer only where you need it and follow up with a dusting of translucent powder for a look that’s polished yet natural. Add a bold lip color and you’re ready for your fall closeup.

Try it: Lorac Breakthrough Performance Lipstick in Icon, a deep plum .

Try it: ULTA Cheek Stain in Tickled , a lightweight, hydrating cheek stain that’s easy to apply.

Flirty flush

We loved the flirty, flushed cheeks spied at Michael Kors and plan to recreate the look a whole lot this season. To get the fresh-faced, outdoorsy glow, opt for an easy-wearing, buildable cheek stain or tint rather than a powder or cream blush.

Try it: ULTA Cheek Stain in Tickled , a lightweight, hydrating cheek stain that’s easy to apply.

Try it: Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Mediteranee, a muted gold shimmer and burnt orange .

Fall color eyes

Prada, Donna Karan and Dries Van Noten all gave us eyes in reds and oranges, the quintessential colors for fall. So this season, step outside your comfort zone and do something a little different with your eye makeup look. Neutrals and classic hues like lavender and green are great, but go bold with oranges and reds this fall.

Try it: Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Mediteranee, a muted gold shimmer and burnt orange .

Bold brows

Models at Proenza Schouler and Theyskens, just to name a few, walked the fall runways with brows that stood out. Last season’s prominent arches aren’t going anywhere, so drop the tweezers and skip the next brow waxing appointment. Simply keep the look neat yet natural with the right tools and products.

Try it: Bobbi Brown Natural Brown Shaper and Hair Touch Up .

The style queen

Reality-TV veteran Lauren Conrad has two clothing lines, a New York Times bestselling book series and a wildly popular website, but what style advice does she have specifically for you? The 26-year-old spills all of her secrets in our exclusive interview.

As we sit down with "LC," as we still like to call her, we can't help but want to steal her style — that perfect wavy hair, feminine floral dress and sky-high sandals — swoon.

Well, her look has certainly come a long way from her Laguna Beach and The Hills days, and she now officially reigns not only as our certified girl crush, but as a fashion icon in her own right.

Keep reading as the budding fashionista shares her beauty tips, who she is most excited to see during New York Fashion Week and why she decided to launch an eco-friendly line.

LC: Concealer, blotting paper, lip balm, mascara and a small hairbrush.

SheKnows: How do you constantly keep your hair looking natural with those perfect beachy-waves?

LC: Dry shampoo is always a great trick!

SheKnows: Now let's talk fashion. What are the five items every woman needs in her closet?

LC: A perfect little black dress, a great pair of pumps, skinny jeans, a black boyfriend blazer and a maxi dress you love.

SheKnows: Who are your favorite designers?

LC: There are so many I admire, like Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Rebecca Taylor and Rebecca Minkoff.

SheKnows: Any designers you are looking forward to seeing during New York Fashion Week?

LC: All of the above!

SheKnows: What is the one accessory you can’t live without?

LC: My Blackberry.

"As a designer, I hope my choices can raise visibility around the importance of environmental sustainability and start to drive change with my fans."

SheKnows: You have Paper Crown, LC Lauren Conrad and now XO with Amazon. What inspired this collection?

Back-to-school shopping for adults

Ahhh, the smell of fresh cider, the crunch of leaves under your feet, the bliss of fresh pencils and notebooks. That’s right, it’s back to school! OK, so, actually it’s about 90 degrees, humid as heck and I’m an adult with no need for back to school anything , but I am jealous of kids who get to go back to school shopping.

I’ve always equated fall with new beginnings and more importantly -- new clothes! That’s why I’ve decided to take myself back to school shopping this season. Why should kids have all the fun? Today, I’m pinpointing the essentials I’m loving for fall.

Vegan Leather Peplum To

Leather, leather, leather!

As Cher Horowitz would say, “I am majorly, totally butt crazy in love with Josh leather!” I can’t get away from it and I don’t want to. Leather can be found everywhere this season, from leggings and jackets to full on dresses. Kill two trends with one stone with this Vegan Leather Peplum Top, $98.

Studded cardigan from Zara

Studs

No, I don’t want to be a biker, but there is something that is just so cool about studs! They’re starting to pop up as details on things like shoes and jewelry, but I like the contrast of them on a ladylike blazer -- like this one from Zara, $90 -- to add a little toughness to a look.

Vince Camuto equestrian-inspired boots, $239.

Riding boots

Obviously it would not be fall without some boots! Shoes are my weakness, so it can be hard to narrow down my wants to just one pair, but if I were to pick just one style for fall, it would be riding boots. They are going to give you the most bang for your buck. A pair of light brown or cognac ones will assure you optimum versatility whether with jeans or dresses. I love these Vince Camuto equestrian-inspired boots, $239.

J. Crew gold bangle set, $30.

Chunky jewelry

Chunky when talking about your weight=bad. Chunky when talking about your jewelry=good! From jeweled necklaces to oversized watches and stacked bracelets, loading on the accessories this season is the quickest way to update your look. Try this J. Crew gold bangle set, $30.

Viva la Juicy La Fleur

Obsessed with Juicy Couture? Yep, we are too! So when we got the chance to dish on fragrance with LeAnn Nealz, Juicy's President & Chief Creative Officer, we obviously jumped on it! We got her to dish on the brand's newest scent, fall fashion trends and more.

SheKnows: So how would you describe Juicy Couture's latest scent, Viva la Juicy La Fleur?

LeAnn Nealz: Viva la Juicy La Fleur is a fresh, floral interpretation of our bestselling Viva la Juicy. While Viva is seductive and glamorous, La Fleur captures a softer, more romantic side of the ever-chic Viva girl. We were inspired by the first delicate blossoms of spring.

Viva La JuicySheKnows: Sounds tempting! So what was your inspiration in creating Viva la Juicy La Fleur?

Nealz: With the tremendous success of Viva la Juicy, we knew that we had more to offer the Viva girl. You can’t get much more seductive and alluring than Viva, so the natural direction was to go softer. We looked at [top model] Sasha Pivovarova, the inspiration behind Viva, and knew that La Fleur needed to represent a flirtier, more playful side of her.

SheKnows: Nice. So tell us about that gorgeous ad campaign.

Nealz: The Viva la Juicy ad features top model Sasha Pivovarova and was shot by renowned photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The campaign captures the feminine and chic spirit of Juicy Couture. Sasha depicts the mischievous, fun-loving side to our girl — someone modern, on-trend, educated and cultured, and who doesn’t take herself too seriously.

SheKnows: We love our fashion as much as we like our fragrance at SheKnows, so if you were to pair the scent with a Juicy Couture fashion staple, which one would it be?

Nealz: The romantic mood of Viva la Juicy La Fleur translates into airy fabrics. Our classic lace and fluid silk dresses are the perfect complements to this floral fragrance.

SheKnows: The Juicy girl loves to accessorize, so what are the Viva la Juicy La Fleur girl’s favorite accessories? What does she carry in her bag?

Nealz: The La Fleur girl loves to layer on her accessories. Whether it’s bangles, charms or chains, her jewelry is a mainstay of her everyday look. Her bag holds a little bit of everything — her favorite shade of lipstick, iPhone, gold sunglasses, car keys, Smartwater, mints, and of course, her signature scent, Viva la Juicy La Fleur. She’s always ready for anything!

SheKnows: Now we must ask you, what are some of fall's hottest fragrance trends that we should get in on?

Nealz: The top two fragrance notes for 2012 are both floral — the orchid and the orange flower. Viva La Juicy La Fleur follows suit by infusing our classic Viva with a splash of mandarin mixed with the scents of orchids, water lilies and gardenias. The result is an ethereal scent that is absolutely perfect for a crisp fall day.

SheKnows: What are some of the hottest fragrance notes a woman can wear to reel a guy in?

Nealz: Juicy girls know how to leave a lasting impression, and the perfect fragrance is sure to make a statement. Scents with romantic notes like gardenia and jasmine, and warmer notes like vanilla and caramel, are both feminine and addictive.

Get it now!

Viva la Juicy La Fleur is available in two sizes: 5.0 fluid ounces EDT and 2.5 fluid ounces EDT, for $90 and $70, respectively.

Botox and the like often get a bad rap in the media and celebrity tabloids. The well-documented “platypus lips” and “frozen face” stereotypes are all too familiar, especially in Tinseltown. So what’s the real story behind these brand name face fixers?

Woman getting injectable

Plastic surgery isn’t the only way to stay fresh-faced all the way through your 50s. Injectables – a class of prescription medicines administered by injection – are making waves for being fast , highly effective and affordable.

As a Senior Faculty for the Scientiae/P.A.L.E.T.T.E. Injectable Filler Neuromodulator Training Program, I’ve personally trained over 700 surgeons, physicians and other medical professionals on advanced injection techniques and the most effective use of these products. My conclusions: Not all injectors and injectables are created equal.

Here are my top four market picks:

syringeBotox Cosmetic

It is the industry leader in wrinkle management for a reason.

Scientific name: Onabotulinumtoxin A

Works by: Blocking nerve impulses to select groups of muscles in the face that cause wrinkles.

Is most commonly used: Between the brows, around the eyes and the forehead. The only FDA-approved indication is the glabella . In experienced hands, the product has far-spanning clinical uses.

Usually lasts for: Three to five months – this time frame will vary depending on several factors, including the patient’s metabolism. Athletes tend to require more frequent treatments. Age is also a factor – less is more in older patients.

Juvederm

A go-to dermal filler for nasolabial folds, lips and cheeks.

Scientific name: Hyaluronic acid

Works by: Replacing lost facial volume and filling in wrinkles and folds. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in your skin, providing it with structure and volume, but it depletes with age.

Is most commonly used for: Correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as prominent nasolabial folds. The product is also commonly used to augment cheeks, fill in hollowed eyes and plump up thinning lips.

My preferences: Juvederm is my go-to injectable for the lips, producing long-lasting, natural, predictable results.

Usually lasts for: Nine to 12 months. This number will vary depending on where the product is injected and by how often it's injected.

Radiesse

Scientific name: Calcium Hydroxylapatite microspheres in a sodium Carboxymethylcellulose gel

Works by: Establishing a synthetic “scaffold” under the skin. This provides an internal structure for the newly formed collagen, which means firmer, fuller looking skin.

Is most commonly used to: Diminish the appearance of moderate-to-severe wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth and the chin.

My preference: Although a little pricier than the hyaluronic acids, Radiesse, in my hands, has clear advantages in certain areas of the face: Augmentation of temporal hollowing and cheeks, jawline reshaping and hand rejuvenation. Because the product is white, it isn’t a great candidate for superficial wrinkles and etchings as the filler. When injected too superficially, it can be seen through the skin. A no-no.

Usually lasts for: Up to 12 months

Restylane

The first FDA-approved injectable filler for lip enhancement in patients over the age of 21.

Scientific name: Hyaluronic acid

Works by: Adding volume to the skin, filling in wrinkles and folds and plumping up lips. Although Juvederm has been used for years in off-label lip enhancement, Restylane is the first product on the market to receive FDA-approval for use in your kisser.

Is most commonly used to: Correct facial wrinkles and plump up your pout.

Usually lasts for: Six months

Boost your energy with exercise
Boxing woman

Exercise is a natural and effective way to boost energy, and the key to maintaining higher energy levels through exercise is to find fitness routines that you enjoy and will put into practice on a regular basis.

Exercises that will keep you moving all day

Here are a few of our favorite ways to blast fat and fight fatigue.

Burst training workouts

Short-burst interval training involves alternating high-intensity exercises with brief periods of lower-intensity workouts. Burst training workouts boost energy, build endurance and burn fat. Another bonus: they typically only take 25 minutes. And you can work bursting into many types of aerobic exercise that you already enjoy -- just make sure you are pushing yourself to the limit. Here are a few short-burst exercises to get you started.

  • Try sprinting for 60 seconds, walking for two minutes and repeating.
  • Jump rope as fast as you possibly can for 30 to 45 seconds, and then take one minute to recover before doing it all over again.
  • Need a quick bursting routine for the office? Try 45 seconds of mountain climbers followed by one minute of walking. Repeat that burst/rest set five times.

Low intensity and high energy

Low intensity fitness routines are ideal for boosting energy. Along with being lots of fun and refreshing, swimming is an excellent way to reap all of the benefits of aerobic exercise without being too hard on your joints. Get started by enrolling in a water aerobics class or swimming a few laps. Tai chi also consists of low impact exercise, as it focuses on gentle stretching and slow, controlled movements. The stretching involved in tai chi will help to increase energy levels, as well as focus on improving balance and reducing stress.

Boxing workouts

This is the absolute opposite of low intensity -- boxing will jumpstart your energy levels... and then some. Boxing workouts are typically centered on boxing rounds that rotate between heavy bag punches and cardio. The intensity of boxing workouts may cause you to feel tired at first, but the long-term effects are decreased tension and energy that will last.

Circuit training workouts

Circuit training is a versatile and fun way to exercise, regardless of your ability level. Workouts consist of a combination of cardio and strength training exercises and can be done with or without equipment. Try combining squats, push-ups, jumping jacks and lunges for a simple introduction into the circuit style. Just one round will rev your energy. Repeat your circuit several times for maximum calorie blasting benefits.

Remember that it’s important to check with your doctor before you begin any new exercise program.

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and the SK Team is in the city, catching all the shows to bring you the latest styling news. If you’re attending as well, here’s our list of the top five things you'll need to survive the nonstop action.

Don’t leave
home without…

If you’ve ever been to New York Fashion Week, then you know how chaotic it can be. From early morning shows to late night wrap parties, it’s all fashion all day/night. To make it through the crazy week with your sanity intact, here are the top five things we recommend you have on hand at all times.

Sanuk sandalsComfortable shoes

This season’s trendiest metallic-toe pumps may look fabulous, but after hours of running the streets of NYC, your toesies are going to need a break. Give them the rest they need in between events with a pair a flip flops, kept in your carry-all for those rare moments you get to rest.

We recommend these heavenly sandals from Sanuk. They are made from actual yoga mat material. It doesn’t get more peaceful than that.

Foot Petals insolesInsoles

You definitely can’t be sporting yoga flops all week, but for those times when you have to wear a pair of killer shoes, be sure to bring some of these with you to ease the pain.

We recommend Foot Petals. They have a variety of shapes and sizes for every intricate shoe design.

stella + dot necklaceA bold statement necklace

“Having nothing to wear” just isn’t going to fly here at Fashion Week. For those times you find yourself in a rut, spice up your outfit with a show stopping necklace. One of these babies will transform your simple ensemble in a flash.

We recommend one of stella + dot's eye catching pieces.

bareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation.Smudge-proof makeup

Summer is still going strong here in the Big Apple with temps in the low 80s. Make sure your makeup stays in place while you’re moving around all day with a great foundation/powder blend.

We recommend bareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation. This will keep you looking flawless all day while protecting your skin from the sun.

Marvelous Moxie in Party StarterA great lip gloss

With all the air kissing, you’re going to need a touch-up by lunchtime. Keep your pout looking perfect by having a gorgeous, goes-with-anything gloss on hand.

We recommend Marvelous Moxie in Party Starter, guaranteed to get the good times rolling.

Bonus

As an added bonus, keep this on your hotel nightstand: bareMinerals Well-Rested Face and Eye Brightener. Fake a wide-eyed, bushy-tailed look after late nights at the after-parties with this life-saving stick.

And stick with us all week at SheKnows Beauty & Style for more of our New York Fashion Week 2012 coverage!
