Sleek outfits for cold offices

Cold women in her office

In a lightweight spring knit, this little black peplum dress is the perfect building block for any summer work wardrobe. It's comfortable, figure flattering and most importantly, versatile. You can layer a cute, cropped cotton jacket on over top to help ward off the frigid office air or go without to beat the heat on your walk to work. Dealing with a consistent case of cold feet? Trade in your summer sandals for some chic closed-toed flats. To keep your legs warm when the temperatures drastically dip indoors, stash a stylish scarf in your tote. It's better to be safe than sorry, right?

Summer Work Outfit

Alice + Olivia Victoria Peplum Dress (Aliceandolivia.com, $264); Topshop Stripe Cropped Jacket (Topshop.com, $116); Nine West Histericks Pointy Toe Flats (Ninewest.com, $50); French Connection Anmlman Tote (6PM.com,$53); Kate Spade Gramercy Grand Mother-of-Pearl Watch (Macys.com, $250); Dreams In Colour Lace Layer Scarf (Theiconic.com.au, $39)

Sweltering hot temperatures definitely call for easy breezy work pieces that won't cling to your body, like these pretty pale yellow pleated pants (yep, those are pants). Not only are they professional, but you can really move in them and they're also in a lighter color, which tends to attract less heat. Pair yours with a dressy white tee and luxe linen blend blazer to strike the perfect balance between summer and winter weather-appropriate attire. In general, linen is a great fabric choice for cold offices; it keeps you warm inside and cools you down out.

Summer Work Outfit

Zara Pleated Palazzo Trousers (Zara.com, $80); A.P.C. Atelier de Production et de Création Cropped Striped T-shirt (Net-a-porter.com, $95); H&M Jacket in a Linen Mix (HM.com, $50); Aldo Welchpool Pumps (Aldoshoes.com, $49); Rebecca Minkoff Beau Satchel (Rebeccaminkoff.com, $230); Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick (Lordandtaylor.com, $25); Pink Stone Ring Stack (Wallisfashion.com, $9)

A cotton cardigan is a sure-fire summer staple, particularly if you work in an office where the air conditioner is always on full blast. We suggest stowing one in your desk drawer permanently. You know, just in case your shoulders start to really feel the chill or you want to use it as a blanket to cover up cold legs. Pick one in a basic color like black, gray or tan that will pair with practically anything you put on, including this fun floral skirt and peachy Peter Pan collar top.

Summer Work Outfit

Dorothy Perkins Pink Floral Crinkle Midi Skirt (Dorothyperkins.com, $44); Peachtree City Top (Modcloth.com, $40); Monsoon Betty Big Button Cardigan (Monsoon.co.uk, $60); Calypso Ivy Solid Cashmere Scarf (Calypsostbarth.com, $165); Express Classic Pointed Toe Runway Pump (Express.com, $70); Fossil Erin Satchel (Fossil.com, $218)

The socks with sandals trend is all the rage right now, so why not take full advantage and try it out on the job? After all, there's nothing worse than frozen feet. You can either throw a plain pair in your purse and put them on at work, or dare to wear a sheer pair to the office and commit to making a serious style statement. A little bit of confidence goes a long way in pulling a bold look like this one off. Plus, no one has to know the real reason you're rocking socks anyway, unless you want them to, of course.

Summer work outfit

Equipment Sleeveless Snakeskin Print Blouse (Scoopnyc, $228); Reiss Paris Slim Leg Trousers (Reiss.com, $230); NIC+ZOE Daybreak Cardigan (Nicandzoe.com, $76); ASOS Skinny Full Metal Waist Belt (Asos.com, $38); ASOS Sheer Floral Front Ankle Socks (Asos.com, $8); Miss Selfridge Margo Metallic Wedge (Missselfridge.com, $105); Trinny Strappy Colourblock Tote Bag (Oasis.andotherbrands.com, $63)

Nothing beats a bright, bold silky pant for summer, especially when said pants are cropped and come with an elastic waistband so it basically feels like you're lounging in the fanciest PJs ever while you work. Um, amazing. Unlike heavier fabrics, such as corduroy, velvet and leather, silk is lightweight and breathable, making it the perfect pick for a cold office on a hot summer day. Style yours with a thin jersey tee, wow-worthy statement necklace and loose draped-front blazer for an outfit that works in any weather.

Summer Work Outfit

J.Crew Collection Cropped Pant (Jcrew.com, $168); Helmet Lang Jersey T-Shirt (Mytheresa.com, $134); Mossimo Women's Draped Front Blazer (Target.com, $30); Mark Major Mix Necklace (Shop.avon.com, $38); Big Buddha Emmie (Zappos.com, $70); Kessie Heels (Aldoshoes.com, $55); Dior Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet (Bloomingdales.com, $75)

9 Beautiful ways to show summer who's the boss

1. Quench sun-damaged skin

Sunburns happen, but you don't have to suffer in silence. After a long day out in the sun, I love to reach for an aloe or gel-based product because they're cooling and calming for skin that's just about had enough exposure to the rays.

Our picks: Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Treatment (moroccanoil.com, $36); Burt’s Bees Aloe & Linden Flower After Sun Soother (drugstore.com, $10)

Our picks: Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Treatment (moroccanoil.com, $36); Burt’s Bees Aloe & Linden Flower After Sun Soother (drugstore.com, $10)

2. Lighten up your fragrance

Fall and winter are the perfect seasons to experiment with heavy, musky fragrance but summer demands a lighter approach to your fragrance routine. This season, I'll be ditching my signature eau de parfum in favor of a light, travel-friendly roller ball.

Our picks: Lavanilla The Healthy Fragrance Roller-Ball Vanilla Grapefruit (lavanila.com, $19); Taylor by Taylor Swift Rollerball, (macys.com, $20)

3. SPF, SPF, SPF

This one's a no brainer. Whether you're running to the grocery store or heading out for an afternoon at the beach, sunscreen is a must to shield your skin against those harmful UV rays. And it's no excuse to avoid it because of sticky, nasty-smelling formulas. We've done the searching for you and found a few brands whose formulas smell pretty darn great.

Our picks: COOLA Sport SPF 50 Unscented Sunscreen Spray (coolasuncare.com, $32); Vichy Laboratoires Capital Soleil SPF 50 Lightweight Foaming Lotion (vichyusa.com, $29)

Our picks: COOLA Sport SPF 50 Unscented Sunscreen Spray (coolasuncare.com, $32); Vichy Laboratoires Capital Soleil SPF 50 Lightweight Foaming Lotion (vichyusa.com, $29)

4. Protect your highlights

Whether you have highlights or not, hair protection is a beauty must in the sunny months. If you get sick of wearing a hat pretty easily like me, hair SPF is your next best defense against burned scalps, dry locks and dull highlights. Another idea? Go classic chic with a scarf worn over your hair. If it worked for the classic Hollywood beauties, it's good enough for us.

Our picks: Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray (Available at professional salons, $13); Mangrove Distressed Scarf (mangrove.us.com, $94)

5. Banish body acne

Between sweaty workouts and running around all week, I've always suffered from the inevitable occasional summer body acne breakout. This summer, I'm banishing body acne before it has a chance to pop up with a targeted product that mops up oil on the spot.

Our picks: Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel’s NEW On-The-Go Refreshingly Clean Towelettes (walgreens.com, $7) ; Neutrogena Body Clear Body Spray (neutrogena.com, $9)

Our picks: Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel’s NEW On-The-Go Refreshingly Clean Towelettes (Walgreens, $7) ; Neutrogena Body Clear Body Spray (neutrogena.com, $9)

6. Master travel hair removal

Hair removal while on vacation has always been one of my least favorite beauty chores. After all, who wants to lug around a cumbersome razor and a bottle of shaving cream? This season, I'll be taking turns toting a tiny yet effective travel razor that takes up little space in my beauty bag and a full razor I can use with or without shaving cream (thanks to a lubricating strip).

Our picks: Gillette Venus Snap Razor (walgreens.com, $10); 800razors.com 5 Blade Women's Razor (800razors.com, $26 for 12 cartridges)

Our picks: Gillette Venus Snap Razor (Walgreens, $10); 800razors.com 5 Blade Women's Razor (800razors.com, $26 for 12 cartridges)

7. Don't neglect your hands and eyes

A lot of us just coat our faces and bodies with sunscreen during the summer months, but the eyes and hands can get hit pretty hard by UV rays too. When you neglect the backs of your hands and the corners of your eyes, they can end up revealing your true age fast, and what woman wants that? This summer I'll be fighting back against unnecessary aging with some targeted sunscreens for these two tricky spots.

Our picks: AHAVA Age Perfecting Hand Cream SPF 15 (ahavaus.com, $32) ; Skinceuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50 (skinceuticals.com, $30)

Our picks: AHAVA Age Perfecting Hand Cream SPF 15 (ahavaus.com, $32); Skinceuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50 (skinceuticals.com, $30)

8. Simplify your beauty look

Heavy eyeshadows and foundations are better for the cooler months when melting makeup isn't a top concern. When the mercury rises and the sun starts shining, I always reach for a tinted moisturizer that will give me a bit of coverage without clogging my pores and a melt-proof mascara.

Our picks: gloProfessional Water Resistant Mascara (gloProfessional.com, $20) ; Sonia Kashuk Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 (target.com, $14)

Our picks: glo minerals Water Resistant Mascara (gloProfessional.com, $20) ; Sonia Kashuk Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 (Target, $14)

9. Rethink your lotion

Heavy body butters are great for the dry, cold months but the summer calls for a lighter moisturizer that won't leave your skin sweaty and your pores clogged. Is daily SPF coverage also a priority? Reach for a sunscreen that doubles as a light moisturizer.

Our picks: eos Nourish Revitalizing Care Hand & Body Lotion (drugstore.com, $8); Bioelements Sun Diffusing Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen (bioelements.com, $39)

Kendall Jenner at the 2014 Much Music Video Awards

Kim who?

Kim Kardashian may be famous for showing her body in a certain sex tape, but little sister Kendall Jenner is the one getting all of the attention these days. The 18-year-old Marc Jacobs muse showed up to her co-hosting gig at the 2014 Much Music Video Awards wearing a double-slitted Fausto Puglisi gown that showed off her enviable legs — and plenty of hip bone.

Jenner made mouths drop with the look that didn't allow for any sort of underwear beneath the dress.

"[W]hy do one slit when you can do TWO?" she captioned on an Instagram shot of the look.

The slits might've been a bit scandalous, but the design of the gown looked more couture than trashy with a high neckline, sleeves and intricate gold detailing down the bodice and skirt. The long slits also showed off the gorgeous purple inside lining of the dress.

2014 Much Music Video Awards

The teen model has certainly amped up her fashion profile in recent months with her nipple-baring runway stint for Jacobs during NYFW in February and a recent sideboob-baring appearance at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Tell us: Did Kendall Jenner go too far with her double-slit gown?

Why we're obsessed

Sure, Zendaya's quite a few years younger than us, but that just proves one thing: Great style is ageless and timeless. Her look got us thinking about fun ways to fuse super-girly and uber-casual styles (like an adorable top and denim shorts) for the summer, and that's exactly why we're so obsessed.

How to thrift: 5 Tips for buying used clothing

woman buying used clothes

With every new season, I love to add some new items to my wardrobe. I also do the same for my four sons, my daughter and my husband. I always think it's fun to add some brand new items to my closet at the start of new season because it's just fun to bring in some fresh new styles and trends. My husband lets me shop for him, and he's always gotten a kick out of the new items I'll "magically" place in his drawers and closets. My sons and daughter, the same thing.

With a growing family, I have to be smart about the way I shop and where I shop. Thrift stores in particular can be a great resource, and one I've personally come to rely on. So from having my favorite thrift store, to knowing how to shop once inside, I wanted to share some of my personal thrift store tips. Believe me, there's a method to my shopping madness.

How to thrift:

  1. Walk in without a plan. You can't go in looking for something in particular. You need to sort of let the shopping trip be about trying to find some treasures. It's fun shopping. You go in not knowing what you're going to leave with.
  2. Give yourself a solid 30-45 minutes. It's so much fun to go in and just walk around and go through the racks. You don't want to rush yourself. Give yourself time to see what they have and what will work for you.
  3. Think of others. Since you are able to get clothing, housewares, furniture, collectibles and vintage finds, keep in mind friends and family members. You might find something that would be perfect for your mom, your best friend or your cousin.
  4. Consider costumes. Halloween costumes are treasure finds. I not only have gotten costumes for Halloween, but great play costumes for the house. I'm telling you, total perfect finds there in this department.
  5. Discover designer brands. There are gems just waiting for you. My girlfriend found Tory Burch flats at our Savers last year. I was so jealous. You just never know what you'll find, and know that there are designer brands in there, too.

Where to go:

One place I love to pop into is Savers (I go there to stock up on new items for my family about once a month), and there are five huge reasons why it's the perfect place to shop.

  1. Affordability. The prices are phenomenal. With five kids, it's important to be able to find places where I can get stuff that all my children need, but at a cost that makes me happy and won't break the bank.
  2. Stylish clothing. I love that I can find the latest styles and trends for me and my family. I recently picked up some cargo shorts and plaid shorts for my sons and an adorable pink dress for my daughter (pink is the hot color this summer).
  3. Extraordinary company. Savers was founded in 1954 on principles such as giving back and providing opportunities. They partner with more than 140 nonprofit alliances that share this mission and are also inspired by it. When you shop at Savers, you help support many local community programs. Right here in my home state of Rhode Island, our Savers partners with the Little Sisters of Rhode Island program. I think it's just incredible.
  4. Shopping trips are easy. The staff is always friendly and willing to help out in any way that they possibly can. My husband bought a table there last year for our playroom and he had two people help him take it to our car without his even needing to ask. That generosity goes a long way.
  5. The store is constantly changing. Because Savers nonprofit alliances drop off thousands of items every day, no two shopping trips are ever the same. You will never walk into the same store twice and that's a fun fact to know.
Find a Savers store near you to check out all their unique items. While Savers did sponsor this post, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Breath of fresh air

Playdate outfits 1

Are you going to the beach or going to a play date? In this outfit, you don't have to choose. The breezy tunic top (dianesbeachwear.com, $38) is comfortable while simple black leggings (H&M, $10) make sure none of "the goods" show. Dress it up with studded white sandals (ModCloth.com, $45) , a bold statement necklace (Target, $30) and a huge practical white bag (Zappos.com, $89), perfect for carrying bottles and diapers.

The day shift

Playdate outfits 2

There's no hotter trend right now than the shift dress, and this zigzag number (Maurices.com, $35) is bound to impress. Sheer sleeves keep you cool and when paired with mint tights (TopShop.com, $12), it's just too cute for words. Finish off the outfit with a simple staple black bag (Mango.com, $90), mint stud earrings (Saksfifthavenue.com, $41) and multi-functional black flats (JCPenney.com, $20).

Retro momma

Playdate 3

It's not a poodle skirt, but doesn't this darling outfit scream retro '50s? Shapes like these adorable black capri pants (Lordandtaylor.com, $41) and a flared button-up (Prinkko.com, $26) are very Betty Draper. Modernize the look with easy mint earrings (Overstock.com, $14), flat sandals (ASOS.com, $38) and a business-meets-summer bag (ModCloth.com, $60).

A bright future

Playdate 4

You see a bright future for your little rugrat, but visualize their future in your present. This bold look is also super casual. Start with basic boyfriend cropped pants (Gap, $70)  and pair with a bold blue chiffon button-down (YesStyle.com, $18). It's a basic outfit, but the fun comes with the accessories. Comfy, low wedges (Payless, $35) are paired with a bright yellow statement necklace (Amazon.com, $12)  and a summer carry-all bag (AldoShoes.com, $50) to contrast.

Spring sailing

Playdate outfit 5

This sailor-inspired outfit has a few modern twists. The grass-green tone of this midi skirt (TopShop.com, $90)  is young and fun. (Don't worry, midis are perfect for playing around in. They're short enough not to get in the way and long enough to not flash anyone.) Tuck in a cobalt-blue shirt (Amazon.com, $5) and pair with these adorable anchor earrings (Betsey Johnson, $25), combination sandal-flats (MissSelfridge.com, $44) and a bright-meets-neutral bag (AldoShoes.com, $75) that will pair well with almost any outfit.

Mother and daughter in matching outfits

Choose similar colors

Coordinating colors is an easy way to tie your outfits together. Pick similar shades but make sure your outfits are very different so you don't look matchy-matchy. For example, pastels are always big for spring and if your child is having a ballet-pink moment you can easily replicate the look with a more adult vibe. Mimic your daughter's soft-pink tutu dress with a sweet sleeveless lace blouse and dark skinny jeans, but add edgy black sandals to spice things up.

Ballet

Yumi Pastel Top (HouseofFraser.com, $59); Mila High Skinny Jeans (Only.com, $48); Loeffler Randall Dixie Sandal (Revolveclothing.com, $358); Us Angels Tulle Ballerina Dress (Nordstrom.com, $146)

Match patterns

Patterns are another way to create matching outfits. Choose similar patterns in different colors to avoid going overboard. Your son's blue-and-green-striped polo is a perfect complement to your sporty blue-and-white-striped dress. Pair his with khakis and color-coordinated sneakers while you can rock glamorous oversized black sunglasses. You'll be a well-matched pair for Sunday brunch or a casual walk in the park on a warm day.

Stripes

Sateen Fit & Flare Dress (Gap, $52); Women's Large Oversized Fashion Wayfarer Sunglasses (Amazon.com, $9.99); Striped Pocket Henley Tee (Gymboree.com, $19)

Adult/kid romper

You'd be surprised how many clothing items translate well throughout the decades. For example, if your daughter is rocking a little floral romper, you can sport a black one that's reminiscent of an LBD (but comfortable enough for play time) with a universally flattering wrap-top effect. Strappy sandals are also age-appropriate for the both of you.

Romper

Black Wrap Jersey Playsuit (Topshop.com, $48); Sunset Sky Sandal, (ModCloth.com, $30); Floral Dotted Romper (Children's Place, $16); Bouquet Sandal (Children's Place, $20); Faux-Rhinestone Sunglasses (Children's Place, $6)

His and hers plaid shirts

If you have a son, coordinate your outfits by choosing androgynous styles. Your son looks great in a summery plaid button-down and you can pair it with a sleeveless version of your own. Differentiate the outfits with chino shorts for him, denim cutoffs for you.

Matching Plaid

Plaid Shirt (Children's Place, $12); Chino Shorts (Children's Place, $12); Plaid Button Shirt (Garage Clothing, $28)

Complementary elements

When matching outfits with your child, it's important to keep things tongue-in-cheek. You don't actually want to dress like a little kid, so keep key differences between adult and children's fashion in mind. As the grown-up, feel free to go bold with your own choices. Quirky prints are a fun tie-in between outfits. Steer clear of the exact same print, but complementary elements are OK, like the skulls on this little girl's T-shirt paired with mommy's little skull earrings.

Skulls

Mango Pleated Flowy Dress (JohnLewis.com, $68); Vampire Skull Stud Earrings (WolfandBadger.com, $175); Jennifer Ouellette Daisy Sun Hat (Barneys.com $275); Rosette Straw Fedora (Children's Place, $13); Floral Skull Graphic Tee (Children's Place, $6); Faux-Snake Ballet Flat (Children's Place, $15)

How to make your regular clothes into maternity clothes

Young pregnant woman

1. Add a top button to your sweaters

Have an old sweater you hardly wear? Instead of letting it clog your closet, upcycle it into a top-button sweater for your pregnancy. Cut down the middle of your sweater and sew a hem along each side. At the top, affix a large wooden button and make a buttonhole on the opposing side. The result? A cute sweater that you can layer over your growing bump.

2. Tie up your T-shirts

Layering is a pregnant woman's saving grace. Start with a basic fitted maternity tee underneath, and then put on one of your T-shirts that's getting too tight. Roll the tight T-shirt up over your belly, and secure in place by rolling the T-shirt under — just below your bra. All that layering and color blocking will give the illusion of a waistline. Consider styling it with this ruched maternity skirt pattern from Megan Nielsen that you can make at home. (Megan Nielsen, $12)

3. Hoist up your jersey pencil skirt

You know that pencil skirts are super flattering, so why ditch them when you're with child? If you own a stretchy, jersey pencil skirt, just pull that sucker up over your growing belly instead of letting it sit below your tummy. Make it fab by wearing a brooch with a fitted shirt to channel your inner classic style maven.

4. Use belly bands and hair ties

Jeans are often the first thing to go when your belly busts at the seams. Not so anymore, with these clever fixes. For a teensy baby bump, affix a rubber hair tie to the button on your jeans, and loop it through the buttonhole for a mini-extender. Once you're a little more cumbersome, use a Bellaband to keep your unbuttoned jeans in their proper place. (Ingrid & Isabel, $28)

5. Tunic shirts are your friends

Demure tunic dresses turn into pregnancy-friendly tunic shirts with the addition of stretchy leggings. Just pull on leggings under your tunic dress and pair with ballerina slippers for a sweet look. If your leggings won't stay up, secure them with your Bellaband.

6. Crop that top

Don't ditch your crop tops now that you're preggy — just learn to layer. You can wear that crop top over a basic black or white tank top for a sporty look. Better yet? Crop an old T-shirt for the same look.

7. Love the ruching

Love the ruching

Ruched shirts are simply fantastic for pregnancy bellies, and you can turn your normal shirts into ruched ones with just a few quick steps. Check out the steps for your own homemade ruched shirt by visiting MADE for instructions.

8. Fashion a simple maternity dress

If you have an elastic-band bohemian-style skirt, get creative and fashion a sweet maternity dress from your ensemble. Simply pull the skirt up over your strapless bra, and tie a cute belt just under your bra to give shape to your body. Your growing pregnancy boobs will keep the skirt in place around your chest, and the length of the bohemian skirt translates nicely into a knee-length dress for summer. Top with a blazer to make it work-ready.

Do blue jean baby the right way, and copy Jennifer's casual cool denim look for a day of running errands or taking the kids to the park. While you may not be able to afford her luxe blue Givenchy python tote, rest assured you can still snag the style for a fraction of the cost with this lookalike trendy snakeskin patterned bag. Pair your basic button-down top with a simple black circle skirt that hits just above the knee like Jen. Then slip into some chic black ballet flats (so you can easily keep up with the kids), and finish your look off with a pair of on-trend cat-eye shades. A real outfit for real moms who understand that schlepping around town in a hot dress and high heels isn't always practical with little ones.

When you're a mom sometimes it's really hard to strike the perfect balance between chic and casual. Of course, you want to look haute, but the likelihood that you'll wind up with some spitup on your shirt (or have to use your sleeve as a snot rag) is pretty darn good. That's why we're digging Jennifer Garner's sporty yet fashion forward getup. Instead of splurging on a $400-plus flannel shirt like her, though, save yourself the tears and cash by picking out a quality plaid top for $100 or less. Team it with some chic skinny jeans (the darker the color the slimmer your legs will look), and subtly dress up your entire outfit with some wear-anywhere beige sneaker wedges.

Jennifer Garner proves that less really is more in this warm weather work-friendly ensemble that'll take you straight from the office to a dinner date with your hubby. Show off your summer pedi in a pair of pretty, nude sling-back platform pumps in a sensible height, and keep things conservative up top with a simple sleeveless gray dress similar to Garner's. A dainty little circle necklace, oversized bag and sunnies will have you looking like the hautest working mom on the block. Because you are, duh.

Little blossom

Baby bod 1

Brighten your mood with this outfit that has positive, bright vibes. Right now, loose-fitting dresses are your best friend, and the shift dress is no exception. This body-skimming (but not bodycon) dress (6KS.com, $28) shows a sense of your general shape without showing off all the goods. Plus, it's a super-adorable print. If you feel like your legs aren't ready to see that summer sunlight yet, a simple pair of black leggings (BodyCentral.com, $7) will make this outfit extra modest. Accessorize with simple mint flats (SteveMadden.com, $40) and stud mint earrings (ShopBop.com, $48), then turn the outfit youthful with a cute combo handbag/backpack (ModCloth.com, $68).

Yacht to know

Baby bod 2

This outfit is so yacht-ready. The army-green midi skirt (TopShop.com, $90) will emphasize the smallest part of your waist while hanging loose over any problem areas. When paired with a loose striped chiffon blouse, the vibe is totally "on-the-water." Plus, this striped top is airy and comfortable (DorothyPerkins.com, $35). Finish off the look with sandal flats (ASOS.com, $48), a large straw bag (SperryTopSider.com, $90) and this uber-modern necklace channeling Cleopatra (TopShop.com, $28).

Mod you look

Baby bod 3

You're a modern momma, and this outfit is a throwback to the '60s mod era. This loose-fitting checkered shift dress (AllyFashion.com, $25) is sleek and sexy without being revealing. Paired with comfy black-and-white sandals (Swell.com, $75), vintage-inspired wayfarer glasses (Amazon.com, $10) and on-trend triangle earrings (American Apparel, $18), this outfit is a winner when you want to stand out. Don't forget the statement bag. We chose this one in yellow (CharlesKeith.com, $93) because of its playful personality.

Decked out

Baby bod 4

For a summery date night out with your guy, you'll want a refreshing look. This mint dress is all about being girly and cute (ModCloth.com, $63) without being too revealing. Sure it's short, but adding ultra-light pink tights would keep it fresh and comfortable. Pair the dress with these nude flats with a twist (ModCloth.com, $33), adorable ship's helm earrings (SperryTopSider.com, $24) and a mango purse for a burst of color (AldoShoes.com, $45).

Beach Betty

Baby bod 5

Just because you don't feel bikini-ready yet doesn't mean you can't look hot at the beach. And really, is there anything more comfortable than a maxi dress? This easy-to-wear floral number (ModCloth.com, $50) is flattering in all the right places. When you toss on a movie star-worthy straw hat (Gap, $40), simple and versatile summer sandals (JCPenney.com, $30), a cute crossbody bag (Zappos.com, $40) and print-popping turquoise earrings (ShopSosie.com, $12), you're bound to be turning heads.

Relaxed blazer

Layers are great for overly air-conditioned offices, but if you're running to a play date after leaving work you don't want to wear anything too constricting. A relaxed-fit blazer cuts a sharp silhouette without restricting your mobility. You can shed the jacket once you leave work if the temperature permits. Pair it with a ruffled blouse, patterned pants, blush-colored pumps, and little gold earrings for a look that's both playful and professional.

Blazer

Emerge Tiered Top (Ezibuy.com, $27); Tall Black Relaxed Boyfriend Blazer (Dorothy Perkins, $59); Rose-print Silk Trousers (MatchesFashion.com $727); Dolce & Gabbana Blush-Pink Patent Leather Pumps (Ssense, $640); Women's Gold Twisted Small Hoop Earrings (Brooks Brothers, $45)

Shirtdress

Working moms are often swamped, so simplicity is key when it comes to the details. Is there anything simpler than a chambray shirtdress? The short answer is "Nope." Shirtdresses manage to walk that fine line between casual and professional, plus they're super comfy. Accessorize simply with pointy-toed nude flats, a skinny brown belt and a gold lace cuff for a classic look that carries you effortlessly into an evening full of playtime.

Shirtdress

Joie Belted Chambray Shirtdress (IntermixOnline.com, $268); Lilly & Franc Nude Pointed Wedge Pumps (Dorothy Perkins, $39); Casted Lace Bangle (Boticca, $185)

Printed button-down

The button-down shirt is an obvious office staple. But what's even better is a button-down shirt in a print. Unexpected and refreshing, the printed button-down makes a statement. After work you can roll up the sleeves so it won't get in your way while you corral the kids. Pair this palm tree version with a flared black skirt and burgundy satchel for a bit of play-date-appropriate whimsy.

Palm Tree

Print Button-Down Shirt (MyTheresa.com, $296); Kaneo Black Laser-Cut Skirt (Reiss.com, $240); Clemence Satchel (Jigsaw, $165)

Statement coat

The best part about a statement coat is how deceptive it is. Your outfit below can be super simple (and comfy) but as long as you have that coat on, your look is flawless. Wear a black-and-gray color-blocked version with a pop of berry purple and a gold necklace peeking out from behind the collar. A stretch fabric pencil skirt is figure flattering but won't prevent you from moving around easily.

Coat

Violet Contrast Silk Shirt (ForeverNew.com, $90); Black Grey Boyfriend Contrast Coat (OwntheRunway.com, $76); Heidi Pencil Skirt (Whistles.com, $85); ARAFRANCA Necklace (Call it Spring, $15)

Peter Pan collar dress

Peter Pan collars add a sweet element to otherwise basic dresses and shirts. Wear this baby-blue version with a comfy-cute pair of oxfords and a chunky cardigan sweater for a chic office uniform that doubles as an adorable outfit for after school. The other parents will be so impressed by your ability to look so put together, especially when they notice that edgy nail bracelet on your wrist.

Schoogirl

Contrast Collar Shift Dress (Dorothy Perkins, $57); Beige Boyfriend Knit Cardigan (Dorothy Perkins, $29); Minimarket Cutout Oxford (AshburySkies.com, $129); Nail It Bracelet (Jewliq.com, $25)

How to find inexpensive maternity clothes

0
0

Pregnant woman picking an outfit

Photo credit: RUTH JENKINSON/Science Photo Library/360/Getty images

Instead of blowing your hard-earned cash on full-price maternity clothes, load up your closet with these inexpensive maternity clothing ideas.

1. Rent it, babe

Why buy when you can rent? MineforNine is an online store that rents out high-end maternity clothing for short periods of time. If you have to go to a wedding or graduation, or have a really important presentation at work, it makes a lot of sense to just rent the perfect maternity outfit instead of buying it.

2. Sew your own

You'd be surprised by how simple it is to sew maternity clothing staples — like a ruched T-shirt, tunic dress or stretchy pencil skirt. With the right materials, homemade maternity clothes can save you a bundle. Try your hand at sewing by checking out All Free Sewing for super cute maternity patterns.

3. Take a chance on Craigslist

Ah, Craigslist. The land of frightening propositions and (a few) amazingly good deals. Peruse Craigslist, and you'll likely find a new mom who is desperate to unload boxes of maternity clothes, sometimes for a flat rate. For instance, I bought an entire two boxes of maternity clothes on Craigslist for $75. They were in great shape, since they'd only been worn for a couple months — and I was pretty much set for pregnancy.

4. Keep your clothes on

Figure out how to transition your own pieces into your pregnancy wardrobe — either by using extenders like the Bellaband, or making slight tweaks to turn your items into maternity clothes. With this approach, you may not even have to buy maternity clothing until well into your second trimester.

5. Check out high-end resale

These aren't your mama's thrift shops. High-end resale shops, like the the Saver's family of thrift stores, carry really nice clothing at a great price. Items are gently used, so you can buy with confidence that you'll be looking good.

6. Trade and borrow

Hey, there's no shame in borrowing from a friend or trading back and forth. You don't even need to limit your requests to pregnant friends or new moms. Instead, scour your bestie's shelves for normal clothing that can double as maternity clothing, to give your wardrobe a fun boost of energy when you're sick of the same outfits.

7. Use your coupon savvy

Several popular retailers — like Kohl's, JC Penney and Target — carry maternity clothing. Unfortunately, these items can prove budget-breaking without a little coupon savvy. When you find out you're pregnant, sign up for promotions at each store to receive valuable coupons in the mail, and use them on maternity clothing discounts. You can also check out Target's coupon database, since the site often carries coupons for maternity clothes.

8. Scour online clearances

Old Navy is well-known for its online maternity clothing clearances. Sure, it's a little risky because you can't try the items on — but a $6 maternity T-shirt? It's worth taking a chance.

Budgeting tip: Don't go nuts buying cute stuff the second you find out you're pregnant — instead, wait to see how your belly grows, and buy as you go.

Daughter Whispering In Mother's Ear

Acessories that spice up an outfit

As moms, we are constantly on the go, so transformational fashion is a must. Having pieces that can get you through day and night and adapt to your needs will help you feel comfortable and stylish, says fashion designer Summer Kramer. Scarves, bracelets and statement necklaces, oh my.

"Always have your go-to accessories to easily spice up any outfit," she advises. "I look for pieces that can take the dress I wore to run errands into the dress I wear to dinner."

Have go-to classics

Kramer, who is founder and designer of SummerSkin, a line of stylish women's clothing with built-in sun protection, says remembering the classics is also a must.

"When I'm running around with my 3-year-old one minute, and need to be out the door the next, my favorite blazer gives me an instant outfit upgrade," she says. "Whether it's with my jeans and a T-shirt or over a maxi dress, I can go from mom to mogul in 30 seconds."

Stick to gorgeous flats

Investing in flats can do the impossible — help a mom feel stylish while running after her kids. "Heels have their place in a mom's wardrobe, but with so many beautiful flats, it's hard to say no to fabulous — and comfortable — feet on my daughter's never-ending tricycle rides," Kramer says.

Plan ahead

Meg Marra, a full-time working mom to a 2-year-old son, says her biggest style secret is to simply plan ahead.

"Always plan your outfit, shoes and accessories the night before — even and especially on the weekends — and lay it out so you can throw it on quickly in the morning without thinking," she says.

Even having a "uniform" can help with planning. For example, Marra's go-to outfit on the weekend includes chino shorts, a tank or printed button-front top, flat sandals and a cute baseball cap.

"All I need to do is make sure I have a clean cache of these items ready to go, and then pulling outfits from my closet becomes easy and formulaic," she says.

Add a punch of color

During the summer, opt for a punch of color, such as a skinny mint or petal-pink belt around the waist or a pastel point-toe flat, advises beauty expert Jenn Falik, mother of a 3-year-old and spokesperson for Slim Fast's new summer weight-loss program. A giant pair of sunglasses with color frames makes for a fun and practical look.

Easy hair styles

Don't forget one of your most noticeable accessories as well — your hair. Ponytails are always great solutions when on the go, and fabulous hair can be just five minutes away with these tips. Check out these other quick hairstyles for moms.

Get thrifty

Worried about spending too much? It's easy to feel strapped for cash when your children need new soccer gear or want dance lessons. Your closet doesn't have to suffer, though. Savers Family of thrift stores, for example, offer great options for mommies who need an outing but don't want to empty their purses.

Kelly Snyder, founder of KansasCityMamas.com and a Savings.com DealPro, says becoming part of rewards programs at drugstores can also help save money when buying beauty or personal care items.

"If you use department store beauty brands, make sure to find out when they have bonus buy events," she said. "Purchasing your items during those events usually nets you another $50 to $100 in free product."

Job interview

First impressions really are everything. Whether you're just trying to get your foot in the door or hoping to climb your way up the corporate ladder, how you present yourself at a job interview matters now more than ever. To score that big promotion you've been pining for or to finally land that dream job post-baby, remember: You can never go wrong with a little black dress. Glam yours up with a gorgeous pastel statement necklace and a cool cropped tuxedo blazer that screams smart, sophisticated, intelligent woman. Slip on a pair of high heels and grab a basic black structured tote. When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, your confidence will naturally shine through.

Presenting a project you've been pouring your heart into for months in front of your entire company is nerve wracking enough. But if the mere thought of figuring out what to wear makes you want to call in sick, put down the phone stat. For those moms who aren't a part of the corporate world, determining what's appropriate and what's not for a work presentation may be a little bit less clear. While you'll probably get some raised eyebrows if you show up in a full-on pantsuit, a pair of expertly tailored trousers styled with a beautiful blouse, elegant accessories and some killer high heels ought to knock your boss's socks right off. Pay close attention to your office's particular dress code, however, and tweak your ensemble accordingly (either go dressier or tone it down).

Work Outfit

Oasis Blue Summer Jacquard Trouser (Oasis.andotherbrands.com, $62); UNIQLO Women Silk 3/4 Sleeve T Blouse (Uniqlo.com, $50); Sparkling Sage Necklace (6PM.com, $35); Jessica Simpson Julip (Zappos.com, $79); ALDO Portoviro Clutch (Aldoshoes.com, $20)

Company picnic

Company picnics are the perfect time to let down your hair and show off your personal style. Just be careful not to push the boundaries too far. If you plan on partaking in any group activities that day, such as the softball game or relay race, it's important to sport an outfit you can actually move in, especially if you'll have the kids in tow too. Avoid anything super-short and revealing, like denim cutoffs and mini dresses (um, inappropriate). Instead, opt for classy, conservative casual pieces, like these easy breezy floral pants paired with a fitted white tee, in lighter fabrics so you don't sweat your butt off in the hot summer sun. Slip on some chic sandals and get ready to give your co-workers a run for their money, girl.

Business dinner

Prepping for a big dinner meeting with a client? Chances are, what you wore to the office that day will be perfectly acceptable for dinner as well. Here are a few basic rules of thumb to follow though. First and foremost, put on something that will seamlessly transition from day to night, like a fab faux wrap dress in a dark solid hue paired with power pumps in a neutral or metallic tone. Accessories are always your BFF; just be sure yours don't look too "daytimey" with your dress. Cover up with a cute but classy blazer and carry a tote that says you mean business.

5 Must-have hats for summer

Hats have always been a part of our wardrobe DNA. More recently, they have been accepted as a vital accessory to complete our outfit for day or night. We may remember the days when wearing a cap to cover up a bad hair day was one of the primary reasons for sporting one, or frowning upon throwing on a hat because it wasn't chic enough. Well, those feelings of hats being just a hair cover-up are long gone (actually it still serves as a purpose... ha) because they are entirely too fabulous to ignore or fail to incorporate into our closet. Another point I'd like to make is that hats are not just stored away and brought out for special occasions. Nope, move over church lady and royal queens and princesses, we are making this accessory work for our most precious everyday looks. Even for our simple ensembles. Yup.

I picked up this J.Crew authentic Panama hat the other day for my upcoming trip to Miami. It's a refreshing twist to the classic style that we usually see, with this neon strip added to the mix.

From flirty baseball hats to sassy floppy hats, here are five styles you should consider adding to your list. Take a look at my five most favorite hats for summer.

River Island cream straw boater hat $36

Grin and Bear It Bowler $30

J. Crew Eyelet Baseball Cap $40

Catarzi Exclusive to Asos Floppy Hat $40

Sensi Studio Classic Panama Hat $125

Most of these styles are wearable throughout summer and some can even go all year. I love what a hat can do for your outfit.

Hickies

It never fails. In the middle of a run — or your Zumba class — you feel a shoe loosen around your foot. So, you have to stop and re-tie your shoe, breaking your concentration and workout flow. Annoying.

Hickies

Technology to the rescue. Hickies just introduced a new patented lacing system that eliminates the need for traditional laces, and they can be used for fashion and fitness functions.

Hickies are a one-size-fits-all set of elastic straps that you insert in your shoes. Once connected, Hickies allows you to slip on your gym shoes, or any lace-up shoe, without the need for tying.

The straps are designed to fit snuggly on your feet — no chance of your shoes flying off mid-stride.

Hickies laces come in a variety of colors and styles, including styles that let you show off your patriotic side. Countries like the U.S., United Kingdom and Brazil are represented in Hickies National Packs.

The best part? The strap sets will only set you back $15. A small price to pay for a frustration-free workout, right?

How to turn a too-small dress into a chic new frock

This easy tutorial will teach you how to take any dress that's too small and make it into something new and fabulous that fits perfectly.

How to turn a too-small dress into a chic new frock

Materials:

  • Too-small dress
  • Contrasting fabric (preferably in a fabric similar to the fabric of your dress — mine were both cotton knits)
  • Matching thread

How to turn a too-small dress into a chic new frock

Instructions:

Step 1. Start with your too-small dress.

Step 2. Cut down the shoulder seams on either side of the seam, then down the sides of the dress (as shown in the dotted lines) and around the hem. (Beginner seamstress option: Cut straight down the sides of the dress, rather than cutting to a point at the waistline). Measure in from the original side seam to make the points at the waist on each side equal in size.

Step 3. Fold your contrasting fabric in half, then take all the pieces you just cut from the dress and place them on your contrasting fabric. Cut around them to create new side and shoulder panels as wide as you desire, and a new hem as long as you desire. Make sure you add an extra half an inch of seam allowance around all sides of each new piece.

Step 4. Take your new shoulder panels and with right sides together (the right side of fabric refers to the outer side), sew them into the shoulders, doing one side first and then flip it over and sew the other side with right sides together. Once the shoulder panels are in place, hem at the sleeve and the neckline so they match up with the original hems.

Step 5. Now let's put in the side panels. This can get a little bit tricky with the pointed waists, so if you're a beginner seamstress, stick with straight side panels. With right sides together, sew the top half of the new side panel to the dress from the end of the sleeve to the point at the waist. Once the top half is sewn, sew the bottom half.

Note: To avoid puckering at the waistline with the pointed tip, gradually angle your seam into the seam allowance as you reach the point. Finish your seam at the point with no seam allowance left — your seam should run right into the edge of the fabric as it hits the point. Then as you attach the bottom half of the panel, start at the edge of the fabric and gradually angle your seam away from the edge of the fabric until you return to your original 1/2-inch seam allowance. Then finish the rest of the seam, sewing at a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

Repeat to attach the second side of the first panel, then repeat to attach both sides of the second side panel.

Step 6. Your dress should now look like this (see illustration).

Step 7. Take your hem pieces and, with right sides together, sew them together on the short sides. You will now have a big loop.

Step 8. With right sides together, take your hem piece and sew it to the bottom of your dress with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Flip it down and press in place.

Step 9. Hem the bottom of your dress to your desired length. Then top stitch around all your seams so they lay flat and look professional (optional). Press all your seams flat and you're done.

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum can do no wrong when it comes to beauty and style. The Shameless actress constantly amazes me with her on-trend looks, and this hairstyle is no different. At a recent event, Emmy wore her beautiful brunette locks in super-shiny, perfect curls to go along with her glowing makeup and gorgeous LBD. Lucky for you, I got Jo Martin, Head of Global Education for ghd, to offer her tips for recreating Emmy's 'do.

Get the look

"One of the key spring/summer trends is nature girl, a look of beauty with soft, natural texture. This look is effortless and glamorous but not overdone," Jo says.

  1. Adding volume and hold to your style is key to this look. Apply a root lift spray to your hair, then blow dry using a ghd ceramic vented brush and ghd Air professional performance hairdryer to create lift at the root area. Editor's note: Always prep hair for heat styling. We love Matrix Heat Resist Blowout Tamer.
  2. Once dry, part hair on your desired side. For a look straight off the catwalk, do a deep side part.
  3. Working from the nape up, take your first section at the top of the ears and clip away remaining hair. Take small vertical subsections of hair, then place your ghd eclipse styler in at the root vertically with the tip of the styler pointing down. Rotate the styler 180 degrees toward the back of the head, then push downwards, gliding the hair through the styler to the ends to create a soft wave.
  4. Repeat this technique to complete your first section. Now take a second section from the temples and repeat the technique, working your way upwards to the parting.
  5. Once all the waves are complete, use a ghd detangling comb to gently run through the hair to loosen the waves. For added glamour, tuck the hair behind the ears.

Jennifer Morrison

Well hello, Jennifer Morrison, aren't you just a vision in mint? The Once Upon a Time actress got us feeling all summery and excited when we saw her stride down the red carpet in this absolutely stunning gown.

It takes a daring gal to rock a super sheer neckline, but we think Jennifer pulled it off beautifully. The soft hue, the embroidered detail and the modest silhouette help offset the risqué neckline a bit, and the sheer back is very tasteful, if you ask us. For her beauty look, Jennifer turned to a 'do she's been rocking a lot as of late — the crown braid — and gave her lips a pop of pretty color. The result? Ethereal beauty at its finest.

The final verdict? Jennifer doesn't get enough attention for her mad fashion skills, and we hope that changes because she's certainly been killing it on the red carpet this year.

And our love affair with Kiernan Shipka's style continues. The Mad Men star hit the red carpet again in a lust-worthy ensemble we're all totally gushing over.

Summer leather: to sweat or not to sweat? The hot trend has been a big topic lately in fashion circles everywhere, and it seems everyone has a different perspective on the debate. While it's true that leather can induce some unwanted sweating any time of year (never mind the hot months), we're all for wearing it as a bottom in the summer. As long as you keep your top airy and opt for a killer, edgy shoe (which Kiernan did here), a leather skirt can easily look sexy and trendy for summer. Finishing the look off with a colorful chain strap bag and bedhead hair like Kiernan did will only up your sexy factor.

The final verdict? Don't be afraid to wear unexpected textures in the summer. Lace and leather, while typically cool weather trends, couldn't be more on trend this season, so step out of your comfort zone; it could yield some pretty fashionable results.
