The secret to neon nail polish

The secret to neon nail polish

The trick to a really bright neon manicure is super simple: a white base coat. It's an often overlooked step that really makes a difference in the wow factor you want. This is how neon polish looks on a plain nail:

The secret to neon nail polish

And this is how it looks over a white base coat:

The secret to neon nail polish

See the difference? Both are still very bright, but the white takes it up a notch. Still can't see a difference? (It's harder to tell in photos.) Check out these nails which use a white polka dot base over plain nails. The neon polish over the dots is visibly brighter.

The secret to neon nail polish

And that is the simple secret to neon nails.

Funky and wearable flip-flops

 Funky and wearable flip flops

For the beach

Flip-flops are practically made for beachside, poolside lounging. Rubber flip-flops are key because you can get them wet without fear of causing damage, but rubber flip-flops are often boring. You aren't exactly offending anyone with your solid red slip-ons, and yet you also aren't doing your outfit any favors. There are plenty of awesome flip-flops that will take your bikini/cover-up ensemble to a new level of chic.

Wild print

Wild Print

Mara Hoffman is known for her vibrant prints, so it comes as no surprise that her flip-flops for Havaianas seriously deliver. They're pricier than your average flip-flop but truly worth the cost once you see how great they look with your teal pedicure. Plus, each pair is decorated with a tiny charm on the strap — perfect for the hippy-dippy part of you that's always channeling Stevie Nicks. (MaraHoffman.com, $44)

Whimsical

Whimsical

Yes, Marc Jacobs' little sister line Marc by Marc Jacobs makes flip-flops, and yes, they are as cute as can be. With a space-age pinwheel print on the rubber sole and a 1950s blue-and-pink color palette, these say "polished." That's all we can really ask for at the beach, isn't it? They're about as inexpensive as anything bearing Marc's name will ever be. (Zappos.com, $55)

Patent leather

Patent Leather

Too sophisticated for a rubber sole? We can't really blame you. For awesome flip-flops that won't be destroyed by water, try a patent leather pair by Yosi Samra Roee. Pick bright neon pink or bright neon yellow shades that are anything but dull. (Zappos.com, $48)

For the weekend

A summer social calendar is an active one, from long walks on the boardwalk to music festivals and flea markets. You want to treat your feet kindly. The weekend flip-flop doesn't need to be quite as utilitarian as the beach flip-flop, so feel free to experiment with materials and textures.

Woven

Woven

These woven thong sandals by Ecote make an artsy statement. Think of how perfect they'd be with denim cutoffs and a breezy tank for a day spent listening to live music outside. (Urban Outfitters, $30)

Studded

Studded

The studs on this leather flip flop from Yosi Samra are so subtle that you could actually miss them. They add interest to a basic biscotti-colored shoe for a barely-there look that would be totally dreamy with a nice (safe!) tan. (RevolveClothing.com, $57)

Beaded

Beaded

Intricate beading is so great for summer, especially on your feet. These flip-flops by Laidback London have multicolored beading and a cushy leather sole for maximum comfort, perfect for those warm days when you're having adventures. (Urban Outfitters, $77)

Formal occasions

Anyone who says you can't wear flip-flops to work or formal events is looking at the wrong flip-flops. There are incredibly elegant options out there if you know where to find them. Get creative with flip-flops meant to be flaunted, and look for metallics or other standout colors and designs.

Grecian

Grecian

You'd never guess from far away, but these are Havaianas made of the usual rubber and plastic materials classed up with a Grecian shape and a dull metallic sheen. How lovely would they be with a floor-length white dress? Pretty darn lovely. (Urban Outfitters, $30)

Heavy metal

Heavy Metal

These BCBG sandals are like liquid mercury. You'd be hard-pressed to find a floral print that wouldn't benefit from the edge these flip-flops would provide. They're so glam, no one will even register that they are the same shape as the typical "throw 'em on quick" summer shoe. (RevolveClothing.com, $59)

Bow-tied

Bow-tied

What's more elegant than black and white? Black and white adorned with a bow! The big white bow on these flip-flops gives them a classic look worthy of style icon Audrey Hepburn. (Bloomingdales, $50)

Why we're obsessed

Emmy has been one of our style idols for quite some time now, and this outfit proves why: She's always changing up her look to feature new trends and edgy styles, yet always seems to maintain a feminine vibe to her style.

How to style the look

Mixing light colors is such a fun way to try something different in your daily look. While prints are a bit more tricky to mix and match, light complementary colors are much more approachable as long as they live in the same family. To stabilize your outfit, make sure you include at least one neutral color that will match with your parade of pastels.

New plus-sized swimsuit calendar proves women are "sexy at every curve"

Swimsuits For All

Unfortunately, as soon as you can say "sexy at every curve" (the calendar's theme), people are jumping to decry the calendar and what it stands for. I blame that other ubiquity of summer: all the articles telling you how to "get a bikini body." Put down the Popsicle, they say, and start doing jumping lunges — right now — or you'll never be able to show your face at the pool without a caftan. Whole ad campaigns, plot lines on popular shows and more mommy group discussions than I care to count have hinged on this idea of how to be good enough to wear a bikini in public.

Swimsuits For All

But here's the thing: Every body is a bikini body. (That is, if you want to wear a bikini.) You don't have to get it or work for it or earn it. All you really need to do is wear a bikini. Boom, done.

Swimsuits For All

Every body is beautiful in its own way but we are often told otherwise. It's drilled into us from a young age that unless we look like a very specific, narrow standard of beauty, then we don't deserve to feel comfortable and cute on the beach. Model Robyn Lawley and noted fashion blogger GabiFresh decided to push back at this ideal by creating swimwear that makes you feel sexy no matter what your size. (Oh and it's not just bikinis. The swimwear line features a wide range of styles, prices and, yes, sizes.)

Swimsuits For All

The calendar shows lots of gorgeous shots of models lounging on towels and smiling while running through the surf. To show how serious they are about body acceptance and confidence, the girls even recreated the legendary topless photo from Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary swimsuit edition.

Swimsuits For All

"I think all bodies should be celebrated," GabiFresh told TODAY.com. "Beauty comes in all forms."

The idea was born when rumors started circling the fashion community that this year's Sports Illustrated cover would finally feature a plus-sized model. Instead the cover ended up featuring three skinny models. "When the issue came out and that didn’t happen, we were disappointed and decided to do our own calendar shoot around the idea that curvy women — and all women — are sexy in swimwear and sexy to men," said Moshe Laniado, president of Swimsuits for All.

Swimsuits For All

"I think there needs to be more publications and campaigns so that people can look at these things and think 'Wow, I look like these women and they feel confident and sexy and they’re portraying my body shape,'" said Jada Sezer, one of the other lovely ladies featured in the calendar.

Because, as GabiFresh summed it up, "having curves doesn’t mean you can’t look and feel sexy in a swimsuit."

Hear, hear!

The Rihanna outfit everyone is talking about and more CFDA best dressed

Rihanna at the 2014 CFDA

"As long as I can remember, fashion has been my defense mechanism," she said on the CFDA stage. If that's the case, this dress seems to be a symbol of letting her guard down. It's tempting to harp on RiRi and this red carpet gown, because did she really have to be naked? But let's face it: She completely nailed this look. In fact, her makeup was so stunning I almost didn't notice her exposed nipples at all. The gown was a custom design by Adam Selman complete with 216,000 Swarovski crystals, and not much else. It gives a new meaning to less is more.

But let's not get so caught up in RiRi's nakedness that we forget about all the other less scandalous but equally fabulous looks from fashion's big night. The latest female added to the Star Wars cast, Lupita Nyong'o, rocked culotte pants in a fresh print.

While Nyong'o strutted her stuff on the red carpet in the Suno pantsuit, Blake Lively arrived in a summery Michael Kors dress. The whole look was reminiscent of a go-go dancer, complete with a thick headband and hoop earrings. Sixties: Welcome to the future.

Coco Rocha was wearing Christian Siriano. The gown from his 2014 resort collection was traditional "I'm off to Ascot" meets white tie, with a touch of goth.

Marion Cotillard and Sophia Bush went for the "lovely in lace" look while Olivia Wilde and Olivia Palermo wore fringe details. Emmy Rossum and Heidi Klum demonstrated the angelic beauty of a flowing gown while Solange wore a metallic fitted gown that hit her in all the right places.

These outfits are work-to-gym with a few simple swaps

Woman at gym after work

Lugging around a heavy change of clothes in the city is not only annoying, but if done over a long period of time, it can actually lead to back problems. We say, why not lighten your load and make your work-to-gym transition that much smoother by rocking an outfit to the office that requires only a couple of swaps to get fitness-ready? Start by pairing a plain white T-shirt with a pencil skirt, high heels and a chic blazer. In place of your normal watch, try this baby blue fitness watch/timer on for size, and stash all your work and gym essentials in this basic black laptop bag that even has a side pocket for your sneakers. All you need now is a sports bra and some socks and you're ready to hit the ground running.

Work To Gym Outfit

UNIQLO Women Airism V Neck Short Sleeve T-Shirt (Uniqlo.com, $13); Timex "Ironman" Fitness Watch (Amazon.com, $59); The O.G. Overnight, Gym & Laptop Bag (LoAndSons.com, $295); Nine West Nixit Platform Heels (NineWest.com, $89); Dorothy Perkins Blue Crepe Blazer (DorothyPerkins.com, $59)

After Work Gym Outfit

UNIQLO Women Airism V Neck Short Sleeve T-Shirt (Uniqlo.com, $13); Timex "Ironman" Fitness Watch (Amazon.com, $59); The O.G. Overnight, Gym & Laptop Bag (LoAndSons.com, $295); Nike Flex Run 2014 Womens Running Shoes (JCPenney.com, $80); Women's Nike Modern Tempo Running Shorts (FinishLine.com, $40)

If the dress code at your office is business casual, chances are that you can get away with sporting your go-to black gym leggings on the job. Just remember to pair them with high heels and a feminine tunic that covers up your butt and any brand logos, and instead of an underwire bra, go ahead and save yourself the hassle by donning a chic bralette perfect for low-impact exercise. Grab a thermos to keep your coffee hot in the a.m. (and your water cool later on when you're at the gym). Then, once five o'clock rolls around, all you'll have to do is kick off your high heels and tunic and trade them in for some training shoes and a tank top.

Wearing your workout shoes to work isn't exactly practical for everyone, but if your boss is cool with it and/or you work in a creative field, we say go for it — that is, as long as you have the style chops to pull it off. We love how this pleated lookalike leather midi skirt looks paired with a metallic gold belt, pink ombre sneakers and a sophisticated floral kimono thrown on over a simple black tank. Shimmery hair ties double as bracelets, so after you leave the office, you can easily pull your hair back into a pony. Replace your skirt with some yoga pants and you'll be sweating it out at the gym in no time flat, sister.

BKE V-Neck Extra Long & Lean Tank Top (Buckle.com, $14); Pleated Midi Leather Look Skirt (FrontRowShop.com, $34); Tory Burch Classic Tory Logo Belt (Cusp.com, $130); Nike Roshe Run Sneakers (Mytheresa.com, $134); Free People Shimmer Bead Elastic Hair Trio (FreePeople.com, $12); H&M Patterned Kimono (HM.com, $50)

Sporty chic never looked so good. Run circles around your coworkers in this very versatile, fashion-forward outfit, complete with black metallic leggings, a chambray shirt, ankle booties, glossy black performance jacket and faux leather backpack to match. It's a great getup for casual office environments. And the best part is, a simple swap of shirt and shoes will have you looking like a haute gym rat in minutes.

"I will get my makeup done for appearances and events. For me, to show up to something like Live with Kelly and Michael with Converse on and no makeup would be disrespectful... I think there is something to be said about switching up old paradigms, but you have to turn the wheels slowly. You have to pick and choose where you are going to represent you and the things you keep sacred, and then there are the things you have to do for the public, for Kelly and Michael and for the Oscars." — The usually casual, makeup-free actress talks about the struggle between staying true to herself and respecting industry standards with Into the Gloss. Caring for your jeans: Not as easy as you thought

Woman putting on jeans

After hearing this news, I was all, "Whaaat?" However, this was also my reaction to the news that we're not supposed to use shampoo, and after giving it a shot my hair feels so fantastic I could (ironically) rock my own shampoo commercial.

Bergh went on to say he simply spot cleans his jeans and air dries them, and that "real denim aficionados" will always tell you not to wash your jeans. But while channeling my inner Bradshaw, I couldn't help but wonder:

What about germs? What if you spill something on them? (Mind you, if I didn't walk around with food on my clothes, I wouldn't be my mother's daughter.) What do you do when they start to smell? And what's this I hear about putting your jeans in the freezer? (I barely cook, so there'd be plenty of room.)

Let's get to the bottom of this whole jean-washing kerfuffle, shall we?

What about germs?

A 2011 study by the University of Alberta made a surprising discovery: They compared bacteria levels on a pair of jeans not washed for over a year with a pair washed after two weeks — and not only were the results practically identical, all they found was normal skin flora.

"This shows that, in this case at least, the bacteria growth is no higher than if the jeans aren't washed regularly," says Rachel McQueen, a professor of textile science in the Department of Human Ecology.

What if you spill something on them?

Spot clean with a cloth or a toothbrush and your fave detergent, then air dry.

What do you do when they start to smell?

According to Nudie Jeans, simply hang your jeans outside on a sunny and windy day: "Additionally, you can turn them inside out, shaking them well."

And what about the freezer thing?

Rumor has it that doing so kills the bacteria on your jeans and freshens them up — however, this was recently debunked by Vox. Overnight freezing may kill most of the bacteria, but once the jeans are warmed back up, what remains can recolonize (did you just picture little germs on horses with swords invading your denim just now, or have I had too much coffee?).

But even if freezing does kill all bacteria and odors, so what? "It doesn't solve the biggest concern for women, which is fit," says Marc Flashberg, owner of Marc Allison Jeans. "Since the predominance of women's jeans are 98 percent cotton and two percent Lycra, the jean will only recover a maximum of 92 percent. In order to have the jean fit the way it did when it was originally purchased, it needs to be washed."

What we know for sure

In order to preserve the look of your denim, you should wash your jeans as little as possible. "Indigo dye doesn't have the capability of penetrating cotton," says Flashberg. "Therefore, when cotton is dyed with indigo, it wraps around the cotton." This is why it's suggested we turn our jeans inside out before washing them.

Once it comes time to wash them, "Add one cup of white vinegar to your washing machine while the water is filling, add detergent, then add your jeans," says Lawrence Zarian, Fashion guru and author of Lawrence Zarian's 10 Commandments for a Perfect Wardrobe. "The vinegar will protect the dye of your jeans."

Here's a quick and painless play-by-play on how to wash your jeans properly, courtesy of Anh Vu, designer for DSTLD Premium Denim.

  • Always button and zip up your jeans before washing so the zipper doesn't catch on anything
  • Turn them inside out to prevent bleeding and reduce wear on metal trims
  • Always wash using cold water to reduce fading and prevent shrinkage
  • Hang them by the feet to dry
  • If you want to shrink them a bit, you can tumble dry them on low heat for 20 minutes

Long story short

If you start to feel like Pig-Pen, wash your jeans. No matter how often you decide to wash them, less laundry deserves the highest of fives.

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Vanessa Hudgens

0

Vanessa Hudgen's side-swept braid

If you haven't noticed Vanessa Hudgens' recent beauty transformation, it's time to pay her some attention. The actress has been pushing fashion and beauty boundaries in a major way the past few months and I've fallen for several of her recent hairstyles. This pretty sideswept twisted ponytail caught my attention for several reasons.

First, it kind of looks like a braid at first sight. The intricate twisting going on here offers such a nice twist (pardon the pun) on the usual ponytail. Oh and the glossy texture of her hair helps a lot too. I got celebrity hairstylist Chaz Dean to share his tips for recreating Vanessa's style at home. Have fun styling, loves!

Get the look

"It's a fun, fresh and flirty look that can be dressed up or dressed down. It looks good wearing anything from a gown to jeans, T-shirt and a leather jacket," Chaz says.

  1. Cleanse your hair with WEN Lavender Cleansing Conditioner for optimum volume and body. Rinse and repeat. With your hair still soaking wet, take 1 to 2 dime-size drops of the cleanser (depending on the thickness of your hair) and apply it as a leave-in, working it in from the mid shaft to the ends.
  2. Follow this with 1 pump of WEN Lavender Styling Crème, 2 pumps of WEN Smoothing Glossing Serum and 12 pumps of WEN Nourishing Mousse. Work the products into your hair thoroughly for better heat protection.
  3. Blow dry your hair until it’s about 80 percent dry. For the best volume results, flip your head upside down while drying. Make sure that you use a nozzle on the blow dryer and that you keep it moving while you dry — this helps to prevent burning or singeing your hair.
  4. Take 2-inch thick sections of your hair with a medium round brush and continue to blow dry your hair until it’s completely dry.
  5. Pin curl your hair into big curls using small double-prong clips. You can apply your makeup while you wait for your curls to set.
  6. Remove the clips, drop your curls and soften them by running your fingers through your hair.
  7. Pull your hair to 1 side, split it into 3 sections and braid it loosely for 4 strokes. At the fourth stroke, use regular bobby pins to secure the end of the braid in place.
  8. Of your remaining loose sectioned hair, take the longest section of the three and wrap it around the end of the braid. Secure it in place from underneath, using an additional bobby pin. Your final result should look like a soft twisted ponytail.

Busy Philipps

With Memorial Day behind us and sunny days finally here, summer is in the air, and Busy Philipps definitely got the style memo. We caught the actress and mom showing off her curves in a flirty bright yellow dress at a Banana Boat event this week.

Yellow is always an en vogue color for the summer months, and it's one that plays well with some other fun warm weather colors. Busy went with the classic yellow pink combo and added even more sass to her bright dress with some hot-pink pointy pumps. To tone down the colorful look a bit, she threw on a light denim jacket for an overall fun outfit. Bouncy, shiny waves and a sun-kissed glow were the perfect finishing touches to Busy's look.

The final verdict? Summer calls for bold color pairings and flirty silhouettes, so feel free to get sassy like Busy and pair two bright hues. The bolder, the better.

AnnaLynne McCord

Is it just us, or is AnnaLynne McCord positively glowing here? The actress recently hit the red carpet for a very important event aimed at ending slavery and trafficking, and selected a beautiful crop top and midi skirt combo.

Whether you're a fan or not, the crop top trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and we love to point out approachable ways to wear the intimidating look in this column from time to time. Here, AnnaLynne showed off just a sliver of her enviable midriff in a soft, pastel crop top and midi skirt that ended up looking summery and sophisticated. Some pretty major heels and a mini bag completed the look, adding some edge to the soft color.

The final verdict? AnnaLynne wore her hair straight and sleek and kept her makeup simple, opting for a pretty pout. Doing good and looking great? That's always in style.

Love it or hate it: Body chain jewelry

Celebrities wearing body chain jewelry

Remember back in the late '90s when Britney, Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera had everyone racing down to Claire's to get a gold belly chain? We definitely do... and we're again contemplating a return to the body bling this summer, thanks to influence from some of today's most stylish stars.

Yep, belly chains — and their close friend body chains — are back, but these chains are less rhinestone and cubic zirconia and more understated gold and silver chains that accentuate bikini- and crop top-clad bodies.

Rihanna is a big fan of body and belly chains. The CFDA winner wears chains with pretty much everything, including formal designer gowns and her barely-there bikinis. Her chains are likely pretty expensive, but we found this knock-off for a budget-friendly $15.

Kendall Jenner and younger sister Kylie Jenner showed off a sneak peek of their body chains on Instagram last year.

Two Peace Boutique has exact replicas of their looks in gold and silver for $15 each.

These sexy stars aren't afraid of flaunting their midsections, but we like Vanessa Hudgens' different take on the trend. The actress opted to show off her body chain on her thigh at Coachella with a Pocahontas leg chain.

The chain peeks out from under her shorts and adds that little something extra to our summer uniform of shorts and tees.

Why we're obsessed

Lupita has a flair for knowing just how far to take an outfit. Her looks are always classy and on trend, never gaudy. It's her style discipline that really makes this look so appealing. And as usual, she's also totally on point when it comes to her eye-catching beauty look.

How to style the look

A floral printed fit and flare dress automatically makes a statement, so follow Lupita's lead and go easy on the accessories. Metallics are hot this summer so throw on a pair of metallic pumps and grab a cute clutch. Easy peasy.

Miu Miu quilt-inspired designs

Photo credit: Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/WireImage/Getty Images

Quilts are back in fashion, baby. What we're referring to, actually, is quilted stitching. You know, that distinct crisscross pattern both Burberry and Chanel have become so famous for over the years? Yep, that one. It seems to have taken on a life of its own lately, showing up on everything from moto jackets to pencil skirts, little black dresses and so much more.

Brands like Isabel Marant, J.Crew, Miu Miu, Kenzo, Dior and Stella McCartney all paraded quilted garments down the fall 2014 runways. Some pieces were a tad bit puffy, while others were only slightly padded. The cool thing was, designers used a ton of different fabrics and textures to create the desired quilted effect. So if you're worried about looking like you've packed on some serious pounds as of late, fear not. With almost endless options and styles to choose from, you're bound to find something you love that's lightweight and flatters your figure for summer.

Here are the quilted pieces we've got our eye on right now. Because hey, when a trend's hot, why not hop on it early?

This designer squeezed 24 different pairs of sandals into one

Now you can wear a different pair of sandals for practically the entire month, thanks to the latest style innovation inspired by one designer's overstuffed suitcase during one trip to Greece.

“As a frequent traveler, shoes were always the first to fill and weigh down my suitcase," Diane Licht said. "I wanted to find a better way for women to quickly and affordably change their look without compromising their style."

This designer squeezed 24 different pairs of sandals into one

Cambiami — pronounced CAHM-BE-AH-ME, or Cambis for short — are essentially a base sandal that allows you to strap 24 different "uppers" made with a variety of colors, fabrics and patterns to create a new look. Switching them out is pretty simple, too: You line up the straps with the sole, insert through the toe loop and "snap" it into place. Finally, insert the straps through the side loops and buckle.

This designer squeezed 24 different pairs of sandals into one

The introductory "build your Cambi" package retails for $85 and comes with a base and two uppers of your choice. Extra uppers will run you $25 each. It's not a bad haul for $85, though adding the extra uppers can take a bite out of your budget. And when you wear out the base? It's an additional $40 to replace. The space saved in your closet for more stilettos and booties? Priceless.

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Jennifer Morrison

Jennifer Morrison's updo

There are always hairstyles that make you stop dead in your tracks and stare, and Jennifer Morrison's recent braided updo had me doing just that. The Once Upon A Time actress swept her blond locks into an intricate braided updo with pompadour detailing for an event, and I think we can all agree that it paired perfectly with her beautiful V-neck gown.

Justine Piecuch, stylist at Boston's Salon Capri, is sharing her tips for creating Jennifer's 'do on your own. Have fun styling, ladies!

Get the look

"The great part about a look like this is you can be as creative as you want by changing the direction of the braid or even adding more," Justine says. "It's meant to be fun and easy."

  1. Start by adding a volumizing mousse. Blow dry the hair using your fingers and twist dry. We're looking for the hair to have a beachy, fun look.
  2. Next, section a triangle from the outer corner of each eye to a few inches back (the center of the top of your head). Clip this section off.
  3. Below that clipped off section, grab a section about 2 inches deep (stick your fingers in the center of the temple and top of the ear and drag your fingers to the back until they meet). Braid this section loosely and secure it away.
  4. Divide the remaining hair into 2 sections, 1 on the left and 1 on the right. Loosely braid each.
  5. Next, braid those braids together again, keeping everything very loose. When you get to the nape (bottom of the neck), secure with an elastic. Back comb (combing the hair toward the head). Pin into a messy bun.
  6. Loosen up the look in the back by gently pulling on braided pieces. Again, this will help the lived-in feel.
  7. For the triangle top section, tease, smooth, twist and secure into place with a bobby pin.
  8. Hit everything with a little holding spray, making sure to slick back any flyaways on the sides.

If you're counting the days until Think Like a Man Too hits theaters next week like us, you'll be happy for this little slice of style inspiration courtesy of the lovely Gabrielle Union. The actress hit the movie's Los Angeles premiere in this black lacy piece of style perfection and we couldn't help but obsess.

When the temperature rises, we typically stow away our black clothes (summer calls for brights, after all) but Gabrielle has us rethinking black lace for the hot months. Worn in a loose, airy silhouette over a bralette, her crop top looks sassy and totally wearable over a matching high-waisted pencil skirt. Keeping with the monochromatic theme, Gabrielle stepped into some black peep toe ankle strap heels and added a touch of color with a classic red lip.

The final verdict? As if her outfit wasn't chic enough already, Gabrielle finished things off with a sleek, slicked back 'do and some classy bracelets. We might want to think like a man when it comes to dating, but we also want to think like Gabrielle when it comes to our style.

Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad

Photo credit: Noel Vasquez/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

When we think "summer style icons," Lauren Conrad is always one of the first ladies that comes to mind. The fashion and beauty expert and author stopped by Extra headquarters for a TV appearance this week looking adorable in a summery fit and flare dress.

Doesn't Lauren look flirty and summery in her colorful dress and white ankle strap sandals? So cute. She paired the frock with a bronzed glow, beachy waves, metallic nails and the most fresh-faced makeup we've seen in quite some time. Part of the reason we adore this look so much? Its versatility. Honestly, you could make this look work for any summer outing you have this season.

The final verdict? While gorgeous, the color of Lauren's dress doesn't always mesh well with all skin tones, so we've found a fun, flirty silhouette that mirrors Lauren's cool vibe but incorporates a bunch of colors so you'll be able to rock her look for your unique skin tone.

No need to forgo your sense of style when trying to stave off skin damage (although protection always comes first). Here are 10 giant hats to keep your skin in tip-top condition through the outside-all-day months of summer.

Classic straw

Start off your big sun hat collection with a classic straw version, no frills required. This Topshop version will pair nicely with your natural glow and goes with everything in your summer wardrobe. (Topshop, $50)

Surprise details

Surprise Details | Sheknows.com

This Laundry by Shelli Segal hat is business on top, party on the bottom. A plain old straw hat gets way more exciting when the underside is decorated with oversized black polka dots. But we promise you can still wear it 24/7. (Nordstrom, $48)

Cosmopolitan stripes

Leave it to Kate Spade to create a wide-brimmed hat worth of a city slicker. If you're more of a Holly Golightly than a beachside Brigitte Bardot, this striped number is for you — timeless Givenchy gown sold separately. (Neiman Marcus, $78)

'70s flair

'70s Flair | Sheknows.com

A truly floppy straw hat, like this black and yellow striped one from Topshop, was meant to be worn with an eyelet tank top and platform sandals. Perfect for Woodstock or, you know, a rooftop barbecue. This is 2014, after all. (Topshop, $50)

Lavender fedora

Lavender Fedora | Sheknows.com

You don't need to stick with neutral colors for hats. This lavender fedora adds some pastel charm to any outfit without making you look like an Easter egg. Charming, no? (ASOS.com, $29)

Embroidered

Jonathan Adler's embroidered straw hats add nautical appeal to the basic straw hat. My personal favorite is the anchor. Throw it on and you're all set for a totally glam sailing trip. (Nordstrom, $88)

Scarf trim

Scarf Trim | Sheknows.com

Inject a sense of whimsy onto an oversized straw hat with a colorful, patterned scarf band like the one on this Genie by Eugenia Kim Panama hat. Coachella may be over, but this hat certainly has a place at any other outdoor music festival you'd possibly want to attend. (Urban Outfitters, $88)

Sequined glamour

Sequined Glamour | Sheknows.com

Sequins for summer? Yes, please! This River Island hat may be headless like a glorified visor, but it packs a high-powered, fashionable punch. You could wear only a towel and still be the most put-together woman lounging poolside — but you should probably wear at least a swimsuit. (ASOS.com, $30)

Solid black

Solid Black | Sheknows.com

If you're not that enthused about patterns or the color of straw, why not choose a solid black hat like the Stevie Wool Hat from NastyGal? Instant edge added to any little floral frock. (NastyGal, $30)

Ethereal bow

Ethereal Bow | Sheknows.com

Let a big, wispy bow on your hat do the accessorizing for you. You won't need much else by way of outfit flair if you're wearing this floppy bow hat by Oasis (no, not the band). Just add some wing-tipped eyeliner and your favorite pair of Daisy Dukes. (ASOS.com, $38)
