Put a spring
in your step

If there's one season that inspires “happy dressing” in me, it's springtime. After months of somber black and browns and being bundled up from the cold, it's finally time to wax those legs, peel off those winter woes and look on the sunny side of life !

If you're like me and keen for a little sartorial cheer — but not quite ready to run through the meadows in a floral cotton dress or squeeze into a Lycra bikini — there are a few cutting edge trends and fashion tricks we can employ immediately to cheat our way to feeling fabulous. Here are my four tricks for optimistic dressing!

Splashes of yellow

Ever loved or loathed a particular color without fully understanding why? It might have something to do with the fact that colors have a meaningful impact on our mood. A recent study published in the journal BMC Medical Research Methodology found that people with depression or anxiety were more likely to associate their mood with the color gray, while happier people preferred the color yellow.

Of all the colors in the rainbow, yellow is the one most closely associated with optimism and joy .

Simply slipping on a little lemon has been proven to increase feelings of cheerfulness, optimism and overall happiness. So if you crave a dose of sunshine, start by working splashes of this happy shade into your wardrobe. It might be a bright yellow skinny belt or blouse at work, some neon yellow ballet flats on weekends or even a canary yellow woolen scarf if the temperatures haven't quite caught up to your mood.

Splashes of yellow

Kathryn's top picks:

Pastel denim

After months in dark, dreary denim, it's time to bring a little pastel punch to your often-neglected bottom half with pretty pastel denim pants. From aqua to peachy pink, yellow to tangerine, these sorbet-hued jeans are guaranteed to put a little spring in your step. Wear them with a relaxed fit top in a neutral shade by day or dress them up with metallic accessories at night. And don't worry about pastel pants being unflattering to your "winterfied" wobbly bits — the secret is finding the right cut for your body type.

Pastel denim

Kathryn's top picks:

Shocking pink pout

This spring, the hottest and happiest lipstick trend is pink lips. Not just any old pink, I'm talking shocking pink. From Alicia Keys to Blake Lively, Ashley Madekwe to Melissa George, just about any skin tone can benefit from a hint of this hot pink hue.

Shocking pink pout

Kathryn's top picks:

Neon and neutral nails

This spring, one of the hottest trends on the catwalk is milky white and nude nails with pops of color. If you're looking to wake yourself up from a slow, sleepy winter, put your fingers first. You'll nail it with the diagonal tip in a bright contrasting shade.

Start with a nude base coat, and once dry, place a piece of tape diagonally across the tip of your nail. Then, paint them in a bright-hued polish. Orange, mint, cherry or magenta are ideal shades.

What to wear to impress the teacher!

When it comes to meeting with our children's teachers, impressions can mean everything! This is one meeting you definitely want to put some time and effort into!

When meeting with my kids' teachers, generally I want to appear that I have it all together.   So, when it comes to conferences, I toss my yoga pants and old T-shirts in the closet and instead try to dress it up a bit. For this look, I took a printed maxi skirt , sandals and a cute little cropped jacket to complete the outfit. It's a super easy outfit to put together and it makes me feel a little less like a tired mom and more like one who knows what's up.

Size matters

When a gloss meets the look of a super-sized crayon, you know there's fun to be had. Covergirl's new LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm is as efficient as it is fun. Read our review below!

Covergirl's new LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm is pretty chunky, almost as chunky as Clinique's Chubby Stick. But unlike the latter, which retails for $16, the Gloss Balm just costs $7.

The Gloss Balm is a beautiful medley of shea and mango butters. It promises a smooth look with just a hint of color. The shea and mango butters give your lips a soft shine without a sticky feeling, and that's just a great idea, no matter what the product, what the season.

The Gloss Balm comes in 16 shades and definitely gives you the shine of a gloss, which is the biggest bridge to cross. We always knew that the balm component of this would do well but were a tad bit uncertain about the gloss aspect. Needless to say, our fears were irrational, and the Gloss Balm served us well.

The moisturizing aspect of the balm is important too: It held up nicely, especially in the drier months. It also has the color payoff of a rich lipstick but the color is sheer, so don't expect it to last through your salad for lunch. But of course, since it's so portable, you can slip it into your purse and use it for touchups all day long.

For me, my favorite aspect is the balm: I used to be a diehard Chapstick girl, but I must confess I'm addicted to the balms much more. It lasts a lot longer than most balms I've used , and it has a gorgeous shine to it.

Plus, the chunky look and feel is really nice and retro: It makes you feel as though you're taking Crayola to your lips, and that brings out the kid in you. The Gloss Balm comes in 16 different shades, and all of them sheer, from a lovely Ruby Twist to a more nude Mocha Twist. Don't expect the colors to be true to the cap shade though — they're a bit lighter than that, so choose carefully.

Two thumbs up!

Mornings just got better! Make this DIY moisturizing, energizing rosemary-lavender shower gel and you'll be clean, moisturized and ready to start the day!

Moisturizing, Energizing Rosemary-Lavender Shower Gel

Come clean

Castile soap is made with 100 percent pure plant oils, and it is gentle and biodegradable. It is multifunctional and makes a great way to simplify your personal care. Some things it can be used for include washing your hair, your hands, and some have even made their own baby wipes with it.

One brand of castile soap is Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile Classic Soaps. This soap comes in a variety of scents, as well as unscented, with the claim of 18 different uses ! For this recipe, we used Dr. Bronner's lavender-scented liquid soap. If you use the unscented type, simply add about five drops of lavender essential oil to the mix.

Note: If you are pregnant, you should not use essential oils. For facts and safety information of essential oils and aromatherapy, check out the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

Start the day right

Keep in mind that this shower gel isn't overly bubbly, and it is thinner than store-bought shower gels you may be used to using. The rosemary and lavender essential oils included in this recipe will make your shower gel wonderfully invigorating for a great start to your day! This recipe makes enough for about two weeks' worth of showering for one person.

Moisturizing, energizing rosemary-lavender shower gel

Supplies:

  • 1/2 cup Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile, Lavender Liquid
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
  • 1 large plastic bottle

Moisturizing, Energizing Rosemary-Lavender Shower Gel

Directions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl or glass measuring cup and mix them together.
  2. Pour the mixture into a plastic bottle to use in the shower.

naked skin beauty balm

There are beauty balms and then there are beauty balms. With so many choices in the market, how does Urban Decay's new offering measure up? Read our review below.

This wonder balm supposedly does it all: minimizes wrinkles, pores and redness instantly. It also has a bit of an anti-aging component to it, giving your skin a lift in eight weeks. That's a tall order for a balm to accomplish in such a little tube.

Urban Decay's Naked Skin line is a terrific line: We have loved the weightless liquid makeup and now the beauty balm is doing wonders for our skin.

How it measures up

The directions on the box are to wear alone for gorgeous skin or follow up with foundation. The beauty balm looks and feels like a beauty balm, but on application, it goes on much more sheer compared to other balms we've used. This is a good thing if you want to follow up with foundation or have a sheer look.

It has a translucent look to it upon application, and we advise you to not rub it into the skin too much because you don't want it to be powdery or chalky on your skin .

It does not tint the skin but diffuses lightly with high-tech pigments.

Not your average BB cream

We were definitely expecting the Naked Skin Beauty Balm to look and feel like a BB cream but it definitely isn't one . Naked Skin is a great option if you want something truly light, so for the more humid, sticky summer months, I would reach for this cream over the rest.

It also boasts that it reduces pore size, and we did notice a difference, but nothing that leaped out at us. The best thing that this cream does is improve skin radiance: Your skin will definitely glow, and the clarity is fantastic.

Right out of the tube, the cream looks nice and warm in tone, and it goes on warm on the skin too. The cream is nice and thick but not so thick that it feels like pudding, but just enough so it is easy to apply. To be honest, the texture feels like liquid foundation. It glides evenly on the skin but as we mentioned before, don't rub it in.

In short, we feel this is definitely a great anti-aging primer but not necessarily a BB cream as you've known it. But yes, we recommend that you stock up for the summer months because you'll be glad to have something that sheer.

How to wear a blinged up collar shirt

$

If you are a mom craving an easy yet conservative fashion-forward style to wear, the latest trend of embellished shirt collars is your answer. From rhinestones, sequins, studs or pearls, a collar treatment is the easiest way to glam up an outfit. Here are simple ways moms can wear this fun, fashionable embellished trend.
Ann Taylor Bejeweled Collar Perfect Button Down Shirt

Pair bling collars with jeans

The first choice for moms is to wear an embellished collar shirt with your favorite jeans. Make sure your jeans are plain — no rips or added details, the collar is the star here.

Try a button down style like the Ann Taylor Bejeweled Collar Perfect Button Down Shirt .

Arden B's Bejeweled Trim Shirt

Wear it to work with a black pencil skirt

A fancy collar shirt worn with a black pencil skirt makes a chic look for the office. If your office is more conservative, add a blazer to tone down the effect.

You can also look for dresses with jewels or designs around the collar like the Embellished Collar Brushed Ponte Shift Dress from Loft This look can go from day to night too, so plan happy hour or date night when you wear it!

Another option? Find a shirt with a bejeweled button placket like Arden B's Bejeweled Trim Shirt .

Forever 21's Studded Collar Sleeveless Shirt

Moms' night out with skinny pants

For a fun night out dancing with the girls, wear a bling collar top with skinny black pants or jeans. Choose a flowy, sheer style for added sexiness. Put on your favorite stiletto heels and hit the town! Again, it is a great look to feel stylish yet "mom-friendly" at the same time.

For an edgier look, try an embellished top that has studs on the collar like Forever 21's Studded Collar Sleeveless Shirt or the Studded Collar Shirt in Blue Jewel .

More tips

If your hair goes past your shoulders, try wearing it up if you wear an embellished collar top. This way, you can show off the look! Remember to keep jewelry to a minimum since the embellishments become your jewelry. Earrings should be studs — chandelier or hoop earrings will be too distracting. Finally, try wearing these styles buttoned up all the way to show off the line of jewels.

Our fave trends for fall

Have you ever dreamt of visiting New York, London, Milan and Paris all in one month? Not to worry, here is your chance to do it all and see it all as I am giving you the scoop on the hottest makeup trends seen on the fall 2013 runways during Fashion Week month.

The bare face

Let's get right to it by reviewing the landslide impact the minimal chic look had everywhere. It is by far the look of choice by many designers such as Akris, Isabel Marant, Valentino and Haider Ackermann. In this case, skin was the word du jour as it plays a pivotal role in providing an effortless comfort and laissez faire that heightens the overall image projection of these women's styles. It says, "I am confident; I don't need a mask and I am strong and beautiful as is."

Tinted moisturizers, liquid base concealers or spot application of foundation are the best tools to achieve this bare effect, while leaving good skin untouched. Lightweight mascara and groomed brows are also de rigueur to sharpen up features without overwhelming them. I personally love pairing this makeup style with statement-ready clothes as the perception is that one did not have to work hard at all to look this chic.

Dark lip and grunge makeup at Fall Fashion Week

The updated vamp

The past year or so has seen its fair share of bright red lips. Case in point: the latest star-studded Oscar red carpet. For fall 2013, the reds in question have taken a plunge in deeper, murkier territories to emerge as these dangerous hues of wine — Bordeaux and plums. Not for the faint of heart, this updated spin on the vamp look is very much drawing inspiration from the latest Bond femme fatale rather than the power suited business woman showing up for a hostile takeover meeting. Or, maybe it is that same businesswoman, but only after working hours at her local absinthe bar praying on her next victim...

To best achieve this look, make sure to have a matching deep lip pencil in hand to refine the outer contour of your lips. These kinds of raisin colors tend to easily display unevenness of line and feathering. That is also the reason why you would be best leaving the gloss out of the equation but rather softly blot with a tissue any excess of moisture. Look for the latest backstage pictures from Miu Miu, Lanvin, Fendi, Bottega Veneta and Zac Posen as a reference.

Grunge encore

What goes around comes around yet again! The grunge look is back already . I am sure you are all having visions of Courtney Love in her skimpy lingerie stage accoutrement, but rest assured, she was nowhere near the runways this time around, only her spirit. Leave it to Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent Paris, Prada, Cavalli and Genny to reference the high priestess of grunge to push forward their design aesthetics.

Black kohl-rimmed eyes areyour piece de resistance, but make sure not to spend too much time fussing and blending your eyeliner to keep it all edgy and slept in looking. Skin coverage is yet again minimal and the hair is slightly bed head looking or casually gelled back for a complete rendition.

Now that I just might have saved you thousands of dollars in flight tickets, you can safely head down to the cosmetic aisles to spend your very hard-earned money in exchange for a couple of beauty must-haves and a worldly look to boot!

Nude manicures: How to choose the perfect shade for your skin tone

$
0
0
This year, the nail trend at the Oscars seemed to be "less is more." We couldn't be happier that some of our favorite nominees like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain chose soft colored nail polishes. Below is how to pick the perfect nude polish that is sure to complement your skin!

Anne Hathawa and Heidi Klum with nude manicures

Owner of the trendy Los Angeles and Japan based MARS the Salon, Hiroko Fujikawa confirmed the new go-to look for nails this season by giving us a few tips and tricks on keeping our nude manicure red carpet ready. Pair Fujikawa's nail expertise with a SheKnows tweak, and your nails will be as stylish as ever!

Pick your perfect polish

Choosing your nail polish is going to be the make or break step for your manicure. Depending on your skin tone, personal style and daily schedule, you will want to pick a nail polish that suits you best. Fujikawa's top three favorite nail polishes for a nude manicure are Essie polish in Allure, Essie polish in Fed Up and OPI Samoan Sand. We couldn't agree more — these colors are too cute!

Because skin tone will play a key part in picking your go-to polish, we have put some of our favorite polishes into categories to make choosing a little bit easier.

Essie polish in Allure

Fair skin

Out of Fujikawa's top nude nail polishes, we are going to vote Essie polish in Allure as our number one color choice for fair skin. This polish has an elegant look that is definitely going to pop against a lighter skin tone. Essie Mademoiselle is another awesome color for fair skin nude manicures. The pink in the polish will keep your nails looking sleek!

OPI Samoan Sand

Medium skin

OPI Samoan Sand is another of Fujikawa's choices and would be absolutely perfect for medium skin tones! This color is soft and chic but has a slight pink undertone that will definitely stand out. OPI and Mariah Carey partnered to produce a nude polish with a hint of sparkle, OPI A Butterfly Moment, and it's our top choice for anyone with an olive or medium skin tone.

Essie polish in Fed Up

Darker skin

Another one of Fujikawa's favorites, Essie polish in Fed Up is the perfect color for those with darker skin complexions. The color is very soft and will give a chic look for a darker skin toned person's nude manicure. OPI Tickle my France-y is a nude polish with an awesome color effect. This color is sure to give a bare look and complete any nude manicure on dark skin tones.

Don't forget the basics

Now that we have our perfect nail polish picked, Fujikawa recommends a couple more ways to complement your nude manicure. Keep your nails short and sweet to add a more natural effect to your manicure. After giving your nails a trim, go over them with a decent amount of base coat polish. This will keep your manicure looking fresher longer. Take your time with your nude polish and be sure to cover every piece of your nail. Complete your new polished look with a glossy finish on top. Essie's No Chips Ahead will keep your nails shiny and long lasting. Voila! Mission accomplished — your nails now look Oscar carpet ready!

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Nicole Richie

We have a total crush on Nicole Richie's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Nicole Richie's braided updo

Nicole Richie always seems to exude a super casual bohemian vibe with her style. Her fashion choices always look quite effortless, but Nicole's hair is something I also love to watch. Recently, the designer and mom rocked this glam updo at an event, and I can't get it out of my head!

I turned to celeb stylist Brian Magallones to get the scoop on recreating this red carpet-ready look at home!

Get the look

"I love this boho goddess look on Nicole Richie. It's great because it's a look that can go directly from the classroom to the red carpet. It's great for any texture hair and easy and fun to do."

  1. One of the main things about this style is that it looks messy and undone. Less if definitely better than more in this case, and it's all about texture. If you have curly or wavy hair, you don't need to blow it straight first — your natural texture will work just fine.
  2. If starting with wet hair, simply rough dry the hair to get the moisture out. Before drying, apply a volumizer at the roots to get body. My favorite is Aveda Volumizing Tonic.
  3. Once the hair is completely dry, section the front of the head from the back of the head, from ear to ear. Secure the back section by twisting up random pieces and securing with bobby pins. Again, the goal is to look undone, so it doesn't have to be perfect. For a variation on the style, you can also put the back section in a ponytail or messy bun.
  4. For the front section, do a deep side part, and create a few braids. Depending on the thickness of your hair, on the heavy side of the part, make two or three braids, and on the other side of the part, do one or two braids. The braid only needs to be long enough to reach the back of your head, so braid about eight inches, and then secure with a clear elastic, leaving the ends out. If your hair is not long enough for this, you can simply clip in or glue in some longer extension pieces, and braid them in along with your own hair. This is also a fun way to add cool colors if you want to get creative.
  5. Once your hair is braided, working from the back to front, start incorporating sections into the back, using hairpins to secure. Leave the braided sections for last so that the braid is more exposed, and be sure to keep some pieces out around the hairline to frame your face.
  6. Finish with hairspray and lots of shine spray which helps to highlight the texture. My favorites are Aveda Control Force Hairspray and Aveda Brilliant Spray on Shine.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Selena Gomez and Nikki Reed

Selena Gomez and Nikki Reed's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Two weeks in a row, Selena Gomez has made our best dressed list! The look that won her the spot this week? This slinky red number she wore to the LA premiere of Spring Breakers.

Cutouts are having a major moment right now and there's something super sexy about a subtle pop of skin in a strategic spot. This red sparkly dress is flowy and elegant, but it has a lot of sass to it too. The cinched waist, for starters, shows off Selena's figure, and the strategically placed cutouts and v-neck make for a red hot look.

The final verdict? I'm digging Selena's bedhead hair and her fresh makeup! They're the perfect additions to this look. Oh and that mani? Super cute.

Nikki Reed

Nikki Reed

In direct contrast to Selena's glam look, we have Nikki Reed's casual ensemble. The Twilight star rocked this modern look to Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience album release party in LA this week, and I'm loving its effortless feel.

Beaded collar blouse? Check. Pop of color clutch? Double check. These are the ways that Nikki has turned a super simple look into an enviable ensemble. The casual waves add a nice relaxed feel to this look, too.

The final verdict? Nikki seems to have mastered the art of casual chic. Necessary basics plus a pop of detail or color equals an on-point outfit!

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Mindy Kaling and Britney Spears' fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling

Poor Mindy Kaling looks like a sequined mess while promoting her TV show The Mindy Project at the Paley Festival in LA. The actress chose an odd outfit for her turn on the black carpet: a sequined baggy sweater, short skirt and cutout shoes.

The sweater, featuring two giant tubes of lipstick, is by WildfoxCouture and is pretty cute but it doesn't look right with this skirt. We'd pair it with some skinny jeans or leather leggings and booties. The bagginess also adds bulk to Mindy's petite frame.

The red flouncy skirt looks like something an ice skater would wear. Again, the wide cut also isn't flattering Mindy's figure. And the whole ensemble overall just feels a bit casual to us.

The final verdict? Her cut out shoes are right on trend and super cute, but this getup just doesn't work well together. Ditch the skirt, save the sweater for a lunch or coffee date and pick something a bit dressier for a red carpet appearance.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Dear Britney Spears: This is 2013, not 2006! Why in the world are you wearing UGGs in public with a dress? This was not a good look back when it was popular and it's even worse now. Here's Brit Brit at an LA soccer game in a short white dress and those dreaded UGGs.

Britney has made such style progress lately that it pains us to see her regressing to her badly dressed habits. The newly single singer recently dyed her locks brunette and looked amazing at Elton John's Oscar party in a black beaded gown.

Her dress is a bit short with the breeze that's blowing, and all that's missing from this look is a bag of Cheetos and a Frappuccino to complete the bad Britney flashback, wardrobe malfunctions and all.

The final verdict? Please keep up the sophisticated look you've been sporting lately and save those Uggs for when you're home doing chores and watching your two sons, Brit!

Twiggy's mod makeup

It's a mod, mod world

Whether you're a hopelessly devoted fan of Mad Men or just can't get enough of the 1960s, there's no denying the fact that mod makeup is back baby, and it's right on trend for spring.

Celebrity makeup artist Julia Papworth explains how mod makeup first took off in London in the 1960s. "Model Twiggy really personified the look," she says. "Her lush black false lashes, black eyeliner and nude lips helped to make her name synonymous with the trend."

So what exactly is mod makeup? In a nutshell, think dramatic cat eyes, and the rest of the face should be kept very simple.

Papworth tells us how to master the mod look in several easy-to-follow steps.Mod makeup products

Step 1: Foundation

Start by priming your skin, and then move on to foundation. "This time period was all about dewy, glowing skin," notes Papworth, "so opt for a lighter coverage foundation, like Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint."

Step 2: Blush

As far as your blush goes, a light peach color dusted on your cheekbones is the perfect tone for this era, says Papworth.

Step 3: Eyeshadow

For the eyes, fill in any sparse spots in your brows first. Apply eyeshadow primer to your entire lid next. Use white matte shadow , spreading it up to the crease of your lid and slightly past your inner eye. Now, add a slightly pearlized version of the shade to highlight underneath your eyebrow. Make sure to blend in.

Step 4: Liner

Create a pronounced cat eye using gel liner and a thin angled brush. Begin at the inner corner of your eye, and drag the brush along your lash line to the outer corner of it. Then, while resting your elbow on something sturdy, slowly draw a line up towards the end of your brow , says Papworth. "The harder you push, the thicker the line will be. You can always go back and fix any mistakes with another brush dipped lightly in makeup remover."

Step 5: Eye crease

To nail that ultra-mod eye crease, use a black eye pencil to draw a curve that mimics the shape of your peeper, just above the white shadow you previously applied in Step 3. Extend this line from the inner corner of your eye to the outer edge, slightly over the crease line. With a small makeup brush, blend as necessary. Use the same kohl pencil next to line underneath your lower lashes, and then pick up a white pencil to line your inner water line.

Step 6: Lashes

Curl your eyelashes and apply a couple of coats of volumizing mascara .

Step 7: Lips

Finish off your mod makeup look by applying a matte neutral pink lip color, such as Jouer Hydrating Lipstick in Kate. Skip the gloss, recommends Papworth, and keep your pout simple so as to draw all the attention to your eyes.

What to wear to meet his parents

So you’ve finally been asked to meet the future in-laws . It’s only natural to want to make an extraordinary first impression, since their opinion could make or break the future of your relationship. The dos and don'ts of style

So you've finally been asked to meet the future in-laws . It's only natural to want to make an extraordinary first impression, since their opinion could make or break the future of your relationship. The initial excitement of being asked to meet Mom and Dad can often be followed with apprehension and sheer terror, as you ask the inevitable question, "What should I wear?"

Well, fear not. Having successfully navigated a few meet-the-parents encounters of my own , I've created a checklist that will ensure you always dress to convey just how wonderful you truly are. And while they will eventually get to know you and figure it out for themselves, it never hurts to dress the part to help them get there a little sooner…

Don't be trendy

His parents may not "get" that harem pants and 5-inch platforms are what all the girls are wearing in Paris. Instead, they're likely to think you escaped from a circus — or worse — are a giant who suffers from incontinence!

Instead of trying to be cutting edge, go for classic pieces like this timeless black and white dress by Zara that send a clear message that you will stand the test of time.

Don't:

  • Harem pants— I've escaped from the circus — wearing a diaper.

Do:

  • Classic dress— I'll last more than a season. Hint, hint!

It's all about context

What time of day and where you meet his mom and dad set the tone for how you should dress. For example, if you're meeting for dinner at a nice restaurant, showing up in baggy jeans and an old tee sends the message that you haven't made an effort and don't really care. Conversely, if you're meeting for a casual breakfast and you show up in a sequin mini, you may not convey the taste level they are looking for in a future daughter-in-law.

Be yourself

It's easy to get so caught up with trying to dress to impress that you forget that what your man really wants is to introduce his parents to YOU! There's no sense dressing like a Stepford Wife when they're bound to discover that you're actually a jeans and a T-shirt kind of girl. Not only is authenticity key, but it sends a message to your man that you're confident with who you are.

Instead of undergoing a complete fashion personality transplant, work with your existing style and just refine it a little. A good way of doing this is to find a celebrity that has a similar style to you. See how they dress up or down according to where they are. Then find your own way of doing the same so that his parents meet the real you .

Orange dress from J. CrewBe a lady

You might have cleavage that drives their son wild or thighs that would make a young Jane Fonda envious, but you don't have to share these assets with his parents. Whatever you end up wearing, make sure that you never show too much skin or you'll risk misrepresenting yourself and alienating everyone . Stick to the simple rule of dressing like a lady by asking yourself, "Would they allow this outfit on breakfast television?"

This means no super short skirts, nothing see-through, no breast-baring necklines and nothing two sizes too small. Remember, you want them to be focused on your natural charm and personality, not your cup size. Instead opt for a universally inoffensive look like this flattering dress by J. Crew . And make sure your outfit is clean. Showing up with old stains and cat hair sends the message that you're a slob and won't make for a good wife or mother.

Don't:

  • Too short — I'm wild, not the marrying kind.
  • Cheap fabric— I won't represent the family well.

Date night fashion for every relationship stage>>

Do:

  • Burst of color— I'm happy and well-adjusted.
  • Ladylike neckline — You can take me anywhere.
  • Modest hemline— I'll make a good mother.
  • Delicate shoes — I am a well-bred gal.

Calling all fashionistas! I'm sure you remember that scene in Sex and the City where Jennifer Hudson introduces Carrie to renting designer handbags? Can you imagine if that really existed?

Your closet in
the clouds

Well everybody, welcome to Shecky's Closet! It's basically the same concept but with your whole wardrobe. It's time to cut up your department store credit cards, and make the world your dressing room.

What it is

Shecky's Closet has successfully combined the convenience of a Netflix rental structure with the fun and excitement of online shopping. You are just one click away from a whole new world of outfit combinations that you probably would have never bought for yourself. If you're anything like me, you've probably seen a piece of clothing or jewelry that you thought would look good with an outfit, but didn't necessarily want to purchase it, or have the cash to spend on it. Now you can "borrow" fashionable clothing without the hassle of long return lines, overdraft fees or those rude customer service employees.

How it works

Like what you see? Another similar site to try is Shop Hers. With a marketplace at your fingertips, this makes buying and selling luxury designer label clothing much easier. With Shop Hers you can also browse the virtual closets of other women whose measurements match yours.

I know we all wish that looking good could be free, but unfortunately that's a dream that can't come true. However, for a flat fee of $39.95 a month, Shecky's will give you 175 credits to bank into your account . All you have to do is go to the site, pick out what you want and Shecky's will ship it to you for free. But what if there are multiple items on the site that I want? No problem because there are no limits to how many items you can borrow, as long as you don't exceed your 175 credits. If you see something you really want over 175 credits, no problem because you can upgrade your account to "platinum" for only $10 more a month.

You have up to 30 days to enjoy the items you borrowed, but can exchange them at any time. Simply put them back in the box they came in, ship it back free of charge and start all over again. If you grow attached to the item that you rent, or just realize how good you look in it, you can buy it from Shecky's for a discounted price. For additional details on how it works, check out the instructional video.

So you tried injections: How to cover bruising afterwards

The decision to get cosmetic injections, from wrinkle freezers like BOTOX to wrinkle fillers like Restylane, is a big one for women. Not only are you undergoing a cosmetic procedure that will alter the look of your face, but you are committing to the cost and upkeep of the treatments. The truth is, there is nothing wrong with undergoing these treatments, which can be considered a face lift without the surgery! If you finally tried facial injections, here are some more things to consider:
Woman getting injection into eye area

The decision to get cosmetic injections, from wrinkle freezers like BOTOX to wrinkle fillers like Restylane, is a big one for women.

How to hide
the evidence

Not only are you undergoing a cosmetic procedure that will alter the look of your face, but you are committing to the cost and upkeep of the treatments. The truth is, there is nothing wrong with undergoing these treatments, which can be considered a facelift without the surgery! If you finally tried facial injections, it's quite possible that you will bruise after. Here's how to deal!

What happens if you bruise?

VitaMedica's Arnica Anti-Bruise Ki

Bruising can be a common occurrence when you get facial injections. With sensitive skin areas and veins, no doctor can guarantee that you will not bruise. To prevent bruising, you need to be prepared, so stop taking omega-3, vitamin E or flaxseed supplements at least one week prior to your procedures. You should also avoid taking ibuprofen a few days before, and finally try not to consume alcohol the night before. All of these increase your chance of bleeding and bruising.

You can try taking two supplements that have been shown to prevent bruising, such as arnica and bromelain . You can take one dose of arnica the morning of your appointment, and then immediately after your injections. If you do bruise, you can take it each day until bruising has subsided. I also like to apply arnica cream to the injection areas to help reduce bruising or swelling. Bromelain is a pineapple-based enzyme that also helps to reduce inflammation and bruising. You can take bromelain two to three days prior to your injections and continue for one week after.

Cover it up

If you do bruise, there is help. First of all, continue icing the bruised areas once you get home as long as you can. Next, apply your arnica cream to the bruised areas. Now comes the tricky part because you don't want to tell the world that you just got facial injections but it looks like you were in a fight! I recently bruised badly because I forgot to stop my flaxseed oil supplements before my treatments. I completely forgot to listen to my own advice... and during the procedure my doctor mentioned that I was bleeding more than usual, had I taken an ibuprofen or omega-3 supplements in the last few days? Of course the answer was yes, so he told me to prepare for the bruising.

Foundation to cover bruises

Here is what you should have on hand if you do bruise: a high-level concealer and powder combination, like Laura Mercier Undercover Pot , a spray foundation, such as Aerominerale's Hydrating Mineral Foundation , and a portable pencil concealer like L'Oreal's True Match Crayon Concealer .

You also need a good concealer brush which will allow for the most accurate application. First, use your concealer brush and apply the heavy duty concealer gently. Next, use the setting powder to lightly dab the area. I also like a creamy pencil concealer because it glides over the bruise and you can take it with you for touchups . I also recommend a makeup setting spray such as Urban Decay's Chill Makeup Setting Spray to make sure nothing reveals the bruising!

Plan accordingly

Another important part of getting injections is timing. Try to make your appointments at least two weeks prior to a big event just in case you have swelling or bruising. You should also make sure they are within your budget when you do get the procedure. There are times you might need more areas treated and sometimes less, depending on how your body responds. For example, there are times when I can go longer without getting my forehead treated but definitely need to get the lines around my eyes touched up. Also, wrinkle fillers work differently on everyone, so you may not get the same results in terms of how long the fillers last as your friend.

Understand where you want the injections

Finally, now that you have taken the plunge on facial injections, be careful not to get carried away. Some people go overboard with wrinkle freezers and fillers and develop an artificial look to their face. A good doctor will actually tell you they will not do the treatment on you at a certain point. If you feel like your face looks "different," then you have done too much. You should look like a refreshed version of yourself!

A diet that works for
your hair!

The Mediterranean Diet's main ingredient, olive oil, is much more than just a way of eating fresh and healthy... it's also a hair care tactic!

The benefits of olive oil

The Mediterranean Diet is no new concept, but recent studies continue to support its incredible health benefits. The fresh diet includes plenty of olive oil, fish, fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt and nuts that can work together to help lower cholesterol, promote weight loss and prevent heart disease. For years, health experts have praised olive oil as a primary element of this uber-healthy Mediterranean cuisine because it can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Now, it is believed by many beauty and health experts that the benefits of olive oil aren't limited to just food.

Share it with your hair

New York hair salon owner Meri Stafa, an Albania native, says the Mediterranean Diet superstar, olive oil, can benefit your hair and your overall well-being.

Stafa grew up eating a diet that largely included olive oil, and says that her mom used to treat her hair with olive oil at least once a week. She now swears upon the restorative capabilities of olive oil treatments on hair and offers them to her clients at her salon. She encourages clients to use the oil on their hair and also encourages them to drink some too.

These simple treatments using the nutrient-infused olive oil can help restore even the most damaged hair and help it become glossy and strong.

If you don't get a chance to make it into her New York salon for an olive oil treatment, you can try it at home!

What to do:

  • Massage two or three tablespoons of olive oil through your hair, as you would with a normal conditioner.
  • Clip up your hair and let the oil soak into your scalp for about 30 minutes.
  • Run a comb through your hair to spread the rejuvenating oils, massage your hair for a minute or two.
  • Wash out the oil in the shower.
  • Repeat two times per week for maximum shine.

In this situation, it's OK to have oily hair — as long as you remember to wash the oil back out once your treatment is done. Follow these simple steps to reach your healthy hair potential!
