Long before the #KylieJennerChallenge, pretty, pouty, puffy lips have been in vogue. Full lips showcase gorgeous lip color, but they're also a sign of health and fertility — one men apparently lust after just as much as women. In this day and age of quick lunchtime surgical procedures, all women (well, all women who possess a generous beauty budget) can walk into a doctor's office and, thanks to a variety of lip fillers, walk out with Kylie Jenner-like lips.
But just because they can do it, doesn't mean all women want to plump their lips with collagen or hyaluronic acid. Some crave the good old days when you could weave a few magical makeup tricks and then erase all evidence of your temporary painted face with a bit of soap and water. Grab your favorite lip liner and photo of Angelina Jolie (for inspiration) and prepare to create the pillowy lips of your dreams.
1. Exfoliate lips
Use either a sugar scrub, washcloth or a toothbrush. If lips are very dry, apply a good balm for five minutes and then remove.
2. Apply either a concealer, lip plumper or primer
Try Benefit's Lip Plump (Benefit Cosmetics, $22). And after apply the lip color, "The trick is to put a dab of gloss in the same color as the lipstick on top of the lipstick," says JoJo Gutfarb from Bella Sante Spa in Boston.
3. Use a lip liner that is darker than your lipstick
"Draw a line above your natural lip line to increase the size of your lips," says Beauty Vlogger Ashley Chennel. "Bright, bold colors also give the illusion of larger lips as well."

4. Try contouring your lips
Similar to how you would contour your face — using your lip liner and lipstick. "Apply the darker color in the creases on your lips and blend it into the lipstick as well as over line your lips with the same color [as your lips]," Chennel says.
If lips are really thin, create the appearance of a fuller lip by putting a dot of a lighter color in the center of the bottom lip.
5. Highlight the Cupid's bow
Targeting the area above your lips where the lip line has a dip in it, use a highlighter pen of lighter concealer to accentuate your lips.

6. Try a colorless lip definer
If a darker lipliner gives you '90s flashbacks and you're not prepared to go there again, consider a colorless liner. "Since it is colorless you can slightly over draw your natural shape, which will give the appearance of a larger, more plump lip," says Makeup artist Liz Evenson from Pyara Aveda. One to try: Aveda's Nourish-Mint Lip Definer (Aveda, $20), which has natural ingredients like peptide technology, organic jojoba and spearmint to plump up lips and smooth fine lines, Evenson says.
9. Apply a lip-plumping gloss
Opt for a product that does double-duty by giving your lips a boost of color and hydrating and plumping them. Aveda's Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze comes in 15 bright and neutral shades and uses peptide technology to plump lips by an average of 13 percent, Evenson says (Aveda, $18). Another lip plumper that is all the rage among makeup artists? Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme (Too Faced, $28), a clear gloss and serum that can be used during the day or at night to boost collagen and moisturize lips.
