6 Ways to wear turquoise jewelry without looking dated

With its soothing blue-green hue and status in Native American Indian folklore as a spiritual "fallen sky stone," it isn't surprising that we equate turquoise with the hippie counterculture movement. But, if you need proof that turquoise can be as elegant as it is earthy, look no further than this year's Oscar Awards, where Cate Blanchett proved a vision in a simple black Margiela gown by John Galliano paired with a turquoise bib statement necklace by Tiffany & Co. Laura Dern's exquisite Bulgari turquoise ring was also a thoughtful accessory: one worn to support the American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE Initiative.

When worn well, turquoise is gorgeous and powerful.

The trick to taking turquoise out of Coachella and into the real world is to stay away from anything too "hokey," says Maria Divaris, fashion stylist and blogger for Red Soled Momma.

"No need to go totally Western with it," Divaris said. "The color is strong and can actually be really modern and slick. Turquoise jewelry can be stand-out statement pieces, but there are also some more delicate options that are equally beautiful."

Here are Divaris' top six ways we can rock turquoise jewelry:

1. Choose quiet pieces

If you want to wear turquoise to the office, or if your style is a whole lot more subdued than Cher's, let the color do all the talking and keep everything else about the piece understated. Divaris is a fan of the Jennifer Meyers Jewelry minimalist take on turquoise because the pieces can be worn every day. Exhibit A:

2. Black and white and blue all over

"Turquoise adds a great pop of color to your outfit so it works brilliantly with black, white and denim," Divaris said. Keep in mind: A little turquoise goes a long way. A lot of turquoise + denim = modern cowgirl.

3. Kick neutrals up a notch

If you're wondering how to bring a bit of excitement to your classic camel coat or beige slacks and white blouse, consider turquoise drop earrings, which Divaris says bring color to your face. A few understated turquoise bangle bracelets can also do the trick, as can a classic statement necklace. Just don't won't wear them all together.

4. Make it pop against a contrasting color

Looking to make a bold statement? Consult the color wheel and pair a turquoise necklace with a purple sweater, coral dress, or even a neon-yellow blouse.

5. Be boho glam without looking like you're going to a Halloween party

So, here's the thing. There's nothing wrong with wanting to perfect your boho glam style, but the key word here is "glam." In other words, know when to stop piling on the boho. Divaris explains: "Steer clear of anything too Western themed, but a bit of turquoise jewelry with skinny jeans and a suede fringed bootie is always a great look. Remember: Never go head to toe with a trend. If you're doing boho, stick with two pieces that give that look and feel and keep everything else more simple."

6. Work it with a gown

If you're a woman who always opts for the most minimal gown you can find, you're in good company — and may have just found your dream accessory in turquoise. Divaris cites Blanchett, Sofia Vergara and Eva Mendes as Hollywood celebs who have rocked turquoise statement necklaces on the red carpet in a glamorous, modern way. For inspiration, turn to the stars. Blanchett and Vergara's simple, well-cut black gowns served as the perfect backdrops to their turquoise jewelry, while Mendes looked as fresh as a daisy at the 2009 Golden Globes wearing a white Christian Dior with a turquoise and diamond necklace.
