11 Steps to hack a salon style blowout at home

Here's how to get the blowout of your dreams in the comfort of your own home:

1. Make sure your hair is really clean

When your hair is oily, it not only won't blow out well, but the blowout itself won't last. Shampoo and condition your hair, making sure you've thoroughly rinsed your tresses so they're not weighed down (I always find the area just under the crown the trickiest to keep suds-free).

2. Blot your hair

Use a cotton tee instead of a towel to dry your hair, which will help prevent unnecessary frizzies. Afterward, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle.

3. Choose styling products for your hair type

Make sure you have products on hand that are suitable for your hair type. For example, if you have fine hair, use a mousse for body and hold. If you have textured or curly hair, use a smoothing or hydrating cream. That being said, you don't want to weigh your hair down with product: Start sparingly. You can add more as you go, but you can't remove it once you go overboard.

4. Know that different brushes produce different types of blowouts

Use a small barrel brush if you're looking for curl and volume, and a large barrel brush for straight and smooth.

5. Use a powerful dryer

Alli Webb of Drybar recommends looking for a dryer that has Nano-ionic technology, which will make all the difference in your hair's shine and bounce.

6. Start your blowout in the front

Since — let's face it — by the end of your blowout your arms are going to hurt, start by perfecting the front of your hair and move your way to the back where you can be a tad less fussy.

7. Dry hair in sections

The key to a hot blowout is sectioning off your hair into 1- to 2-inch sections, and making sure each section is 100 percent dry before moving onto the next (if it's even slightly damp, get ready for frizz). With your dryer on high, press the nozzle directly against your hair shaft on the brush, and glide from root to tip.

8. Focus on your ends, less on your roots

Since your roots dry faster than your ends, leave your root area alone once it's dry and brush through your ends until you've soaked up all the moisture.

9. Blast hair from underneath

Once your sections are dry, blast your roots from underneath while fluffing them up with your fingers. This will add lift and bring out that bouncy look we all know and love.

10. Set with hairspray

To lock in the volume you've worked so hard to achieve, lightly mist your 'do with hairspray, keeping the can a minimum of six inches away from your head to prevent sticky spots.

11. Strut out of your bathroom

That's an order!
