Do some kinds of imperfections keep you from putting your bare tips on display? Been there, done that! While genetics play a part, the health and overall appearance of your nails starts from within.

Start 2015 off right by getting your nails manicured. Add a few lifestyle changes, throw in a couple topical treatments and you’ll be well on your way to a more beautiful, natural nail.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Water is essential to life and offers so many benefits including keeping your nail matrix hydrated. Don't like the taste of water? I keep a squeeze bottle of lime juice at the ready.

2. Increase your vitamin D intake

So many people suffer from a Vitamin D deficiency, especially in the winter when sunlight is at a minimum. And vitamin D is so crucial for nail health. Oily fish like trout and salmon, portabella mushrooms, whole grain cereal and tofu are just a few of the foods that can boost your vitamin D levels.

3. Say hello to biotin

Biotin is a factor in improving nail health, battling brittleness. Eggs (but not just the egg white), almonds and supplements like Nature's Bounty® Optimal Solutions® Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies are rich in biotin and help promote supple nails.

4. Get oiled up

The cuticle is not only a frame for your nail beds, it protects the nail as it grows out and hardens. Apply a cuticle treatment rich in jojoba and sweet almond oil daily.

5. Gloves on

Water can penetrate the nail through the free edge, causing splitting, so wear rubber gloves during household chores. And before you go to bed, slather on hand lotion before slipping on cotton gloves for an overnight treatment.

Are healthier nails part of your 2015 goals? Will you add any of these tips to your lifestyle? What are your biggest nail concerns?
