Now that Pantone has named sangria one of fall's hottest color trends, we'd like to know how to work it into our wardrobe without any fashion faux pas, so we consulted costume designer Soyon An.
Maroon and oxblood (sangria's brethren) have been trending on fall runways for years, so it's no big surprise that sangria is itching for its moment in the spotlight. Soyon says "olive skin tones with darker hair" are ideal matches for the color, but that bold hair colors in general (think pinks and other loud hues) will create a funky, cool pairing with the deep color.
We all know fashion rules were meant to be broken though, so regardless of your skin tone or hair color, the key to working the sangria trend is your styling. "If it's a dress, accessorize well. If it's a top, rock it with some black skinny jeans. If it's pants, pair it with a soft blouse, it'll be hot!" Soyon says.
Finding the right colors to pair your sangria style with is also key. Go-to neutrals like black, cream and charcoal gray play nicely with sangria, but so do unexpected hues like forest green and pink, Soyon notes.
"Don't be afraid! Sangria is the new black! Wear your sangria piece as if it were black and pair with anything you would wear with your black clothes."
Whether you're ready for it or not, we'll definitely be seeing a lot more sangria this season. And you know what? We'll raise a glass to that.
