Styles fit for a royal
Sorry, Lorde. As it turns out, you can be royal… or at least, you know, still look the part. Celebrity stylist Dawn Del Russo predicts a resurgence of majestic and regal styles for spring. Think rich textures, pops of jewel-tone colors, embroidered accents, embellished dresses and luxurious fabrics fit for a queen. "To pull off this trend with ease, try accessories first," she suggests. A handbag or shoes with an artisanal vibe is sure to be a huge hit. If flashy prints and patterns aren't exactly your thing, Del Russo recommends looking for silk dresses in blush tones that can work well with a simple sandal.
Bold, bright blues and greens
This in-your-face Spring/Summer 2015 trend is all about the artistic side of fashion and bold, bright colors that really catch the eye, says Del Russo. Color-wise, "electric blues and strong mints are definitely the way to go.” To avoid a head-to-toe cartoonish look, though, she advises rocking one intense color or print on top or bottom styled with neutrals everywhere else. "Keep it simple with a cool blue skirt, crisp white top and heels that pop in neon yellow, or experiment with a visually appealing dress that has done all the artsy thinking for you.”
High-fashion athletic wear
Who's ready to play ball? OK, not actually, but according to celebrity stylist for Hair Room Service Andre Austin, we can expect to spot lots of athletic-inspired wear in lush and feminine silhouettes at Fashion Week. Think super-soft, sheer and drapey fabrics you'd wear out, not to the gym. After all, "this is not your casual yoga pants look but a chic redux of the athletic trend that's beginning to take off now," Austin explains. "Try mixing a great pair of heels with a slightly fitted pair of designer sweatpants. Add an oversized T-shirt and a tailored blazer to complete the look." Remember to play around with proportions, too. For example, you’ll want to balance out baggy pieces with more fitted ones to really nail the look.
India-inspired embellishments
"India is going through a revamp politically with much talk of positive change, and the fashion world is certainly turning an eye in that direction," points out Melissa Martinez, owner of trend forecasting and design company PELT. With that said, she predicts that this spring, we'll be seeing tons of caftan cuts in tops and dresses and lots of metallic embellishments and beading along with traditional batik, henna tattoo and kalamkari prints (which are native to the country). "Flowy, caftan dresses are no-nonsense go-to's," she says. "Throw them on with some metallic accessories and you're out the door."
Unisex fashion
Blurred lines might just be the best way to describe this rising fashion trend. Many women are now looking to men's boutiques to get their fix, notes Martinez. "Tomboy styling is evolving into more unisex dress, and staples such as blazers are becoming softer in cut and bottoms more relaxed and roomy." Hey, nothing wrong with a little borrowing from the boys, right? Just be sure to rock those roomy pants with slim shirts, like a sheer menswear tank and a strappy bra top worn underneath. "It's a very Madonna 'Express yourself' era," says Martinez.
