Why I will not get on board with the new overalls trend

They're featured in Glamour and Marie Claire for their August denim issues this month and I've even seen them filling out tabloid spreads. I about spilled my trail mix when I noticed an overalls feature in the issue of Us Weekly.

The list of devotees who've hopped on board the overall bandwagon reads like attendees at a Hollywood style summit: Emma Stone, Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne, Kate Bosworth, Olivia Palermo, Miley Cyrus and Zoe Saldana, to name a few.

That's all well and good but here's why I'm not so excited about the deceiving headlines screaming, "Buy overalls now!"

I am all about trends to mix in with the classics to fill out your wardrobe but I hate when a trend is touted that just will not work for most female body types. Overalls are one of those.

I'd venture a guess that roughly 95 percent of the female population should not invest in overalls this season, no matter what the magazines and blogs say. While we've seen this item on thin celebs like Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth, I can't say I've seen any stars with even modest curves sport this trend. I don't think their stylists would allow it. Because the baggy silhouette of overalls widen women where they don't want to be wider.

I once tried these on at an H&M, just to say I had because overalls were also in style a few years ago.

I'm a woman of modest curves, like the majority of American women. I certainly don't have Beyoncé's figure, but I definitely don't have Kate or Zoe's either. I've got a butt and boobs, and let me tell you: Overalls eliminated all sense of curves. They gave me extra weight in the hips, thighs and midsection. They did not lengthen my legs. Did not define a waist. I could not get those suckers off fast enough.

Unless you have a very specific body type, you probably won't ever love a new pair of overalls. In fact, if you often get tempted into trendy buys like I do (guilty!), you'll probably buy overalls, put them on a half dozen mornings and try to make them work with various shoes and tops in front of your mirror, and then finally abandon ship when it's clear they're a lost cause. This trend is best reserved for our 6-year-old selves.

If you like overalls and the way they look on your body? Wear them; go for it. Who am I to tell you what to wear? I just know how easy it is to get lured into buying "the hot new item of the season." Been there, done that, made my style mistakes and have plenty of regrettable buys on my shelves. If you ask me, it's OK to abstain from overalls. You can sit on the sidelines with me and not feel bad. Let's invest in a great new bag or pair of heels instead. 'Kay?
