Spring/
Summer 2013
Check out our most coveted trends from New York Fashion Week — straight from the tents at Lincoln Center.
We've sat front row, seen hundreds of models and spotted major celebrities, which means two things: Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is officially over, and we now have a list of our favorite trends for next season.
But instead of listing every trend from the runways — and believe us, there are many — we've picked the absolute best trends that will be the most wearable come spring.
Trend report
No matter your budget, if you keep these notes in mind, you will instantly look on-trend — just as if you stepped off the catwalk.
Lace
We've seen lace pop up for the last few seasons, but this spring, add lace accents to anything from blouses to the lining of your skirt. Feeling slightly bold? Take note of the BCBG Max Azria show and opt for an entire lace dress — totally chic.
Tip: If you're not quite ready for a full lace moment, definitely start small — a pretty lace tee in a neutral color paired with colored denim and a fun flat will go a long way.
Black and white
There's nothing more classic than black and white — and chances are, you probably already have an assortment of options in your closet. Nanette Lepore's collection consisted of flowy black and white dresses, mixed with sleek, '70s-inspired black jumpsuits.
Tip: Pick one color you want to focus on and mix the other color in slightly with your shoes, bag or tee. You don't want to look like a complete ying and yang symbol.
Stripes
Marc Jacobs showed standout stripe ensembles this season — everything from tees and pants to sweaters and coats. We love the idea of adding some stripes to any look — just make sure you're not in head to toe horizontals.
Tip: The same rule applies as always. While horizontal stripes can be totally flattering at times, they're not always, so if you have the option, opt for vertical stripes.
Leather
While leather is usually considered a fall and winter staple, designers proved it can easily transition to spring — just use in moderation. Everyone from Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and DKNY showed a variety of leather options — everything from lightweight jackets to colorful shift dresses.
Tip: Invest. Leather can be very expensive, but if you find the right piece, it will last you a lifetime. A fitted leather jacket or slimming dress will never go out of style!
Florals
Florals for spring? We know, not that new or groundbreaking, but that just proves that florals will always be here to stay. This season, take note from Richard Chai Love or Rebecca Minkoff, by adding slight floral accents to your pants, tops and coats.
Tip: Go wild with florals! This is the one print that will always look chic — no matter if you have an entire bold floral dress or a more muted floral blouse.
