Unexpected ways to wear dark colors in spring

Sure, we can't get enough of vibrant colors all the time when the temps finally hit above freezing, but quite frankly, there's something so effortlessly cool about going against the grain come spring by rocking non-traditional dark colors. Meaning taking your tried-and-true cold-weather dark staples into your warm-weather routine. And what's the best part about this? You won't have to stock an entire spring wardrobe with new bright colors! You'll save so much time (and money!) by re-wearing those darker winter essentials you already have in your closet.

Wondering how to transition your winter clothes into spring? We show you how with the three easy tips below.

1

Go for dark shoes, but nothing else

It's easy to wear your go-to cold-weather black booties when it's warmer outside, you just need to ensure the rest of your outfit doesn't come across as too wintry. Pair with a flirty floral dress (no tights — just a short sock inside the boot will do), an easy denim jacket and a colorful bag.

Floral Lightweight Dress (Mango, $70), Dixie Denim Jacket (LuckyBrand, $90),
Groove Nylon Mini Bag (Juicy Couture, $98), Tassel Trim Western Ankle Boots (River Island, $90)

2

Lighten up a chunkier sweater

You can't get enough of your charcoal oversized knit sweater on those frigid days, but you'd probably never guess it could work on balmy days, right? Well, think again. It's easy to rock without sweating to death if you keep the rest of your outfit lighter. Try your slouch sweater with a colorful pencil skirt for a laid-back, yet polished work look. Although you'll be wearing a sweater, the bare legs (and lower arms if you roll up your sleeves!) will keep you cool on warm days — and you'll look cool, too.

3

De-bulk a black coat

Although spring technically means warmer temps, there will be some days when it's still just a bit cooler outside. So to beat those elements, your black winter pea coat may become incredibly useful. Just don't add as many layers as you would if it was below zero outside. A not-too-thick button-down shirt, skinnies and cute sneakers will keep your warm, but not too warm.
