& Glam every day

Are you ready to be a fabulista this summer? We had the chance to speak with celebrity stylist June Ambrose, whose client list includes heavy hitters such at Kelly Ripa, Alicia Keys and Zoe Saldana, on staying fresh, gorgeous and stylish all season long. June has partnered up with Caress Body Wash to share her amazing tips on being fab and glam every day.

The fashion guru revealed how she pairs silky skin – with sophisticated fragrances – along with the latest fabulous trends that everyone can rock this summer. Her best advice? The process starts from the morning in the shower and continues into a confidence that can last all day with the right fragrance, skin care and clothes. One of her favorite products -- the new Caress Endless Kiss Silkening Body Wash and Beauty Bar -- has the scent of creamy vanilla and sandalwood, and is perfect to start the day with.

Naturally, I also wanted to hear about June's work with celebrity clients, and she didn't disappoint. She said she always starts by talking to them about their brand image and what they want to portray to the world, and said this is a great tip for those of us without a fab stylist on hand – determine your own personal brand and then find fashion to reflect who you want to be. For inspiration, look at fashion and beauty websites and create either an online vision board on Pinterest or one at home on a poster board.

For more tips on how to be a gorgeous fabulista this summer, check out June's video:

Spice Girls' Olympics closing ceremony fashion: The glitter, glam and those cabs!

We'd like to thank the Olympics committee for making our childhood dreams come true. Seriously. Last night, every 20 something's style dreams came true -- the Spice Girls reunited for a fashionable and fabulous performance to celebrate the end of the 2012 Summer Olympics. And guess what? They rode in on glammed up cabs!!

Spice Girls at the London Games

Let me be honest -- I was a bit more than obsessed with the Spice Girls as a little girl. And with good reason, too! These chicks were the coolest, chicest gals around, and they could sing and dance like nobody's business. For the longest time, I seriously wished I was Baby Spice, but that's another story...

So as you could expect, I was beyond excited when I heard that the Spice Girls would be performing at the Olympics closing ceremony! And let me just say, the girls still have it. Last night, the original fab five reunited for a fashion-filled performance during the Olympics closing ceremony, and to the fashion world's joy, they rode in on blinged out cabs, lit up in colors to fit their personal fashion personality. So which spice was the most stylish last night? Let's break it down.

Emma Bunton

Emma Bunton

As my fave Spice Girl, Emma has always held a special fashion spot in my heart, and last night she didn't disappoint! The star was sweet yet sexy in her hot pink Maggie Cooke mini-dress. Emma was always the girly, sweet star, and this plunging neckline and the high fashion silhouette of this number helped her graduate into the feminine femme we always knew she was.

Melanie Chisholm

Mel C. was always the sporty gal's best friend, and I dare say it, she always made the athletic look seem fun, not sloppy. Well, Sporty Spice has grown up quite a bit, and her style has evolved even more over the years. Last night, Mel flaunted those toned arms in a white jumpsuit with glam detailing. The best part? Those metallic sneakers!

Melanie Brown

You don't need to tell Melanie B. that animal print is hot to give her reason to rock the trend. Girl was the original leopard lady, after all. The feisty Spice Girl didn't disappoint last night in her sexy Zuhair Murad bodysuit. The skinsuit wonder fit Mel's body like a glove and helped her show off her sexy shape in a more mature way than those sometimes cheesy looks from her past.

Victoria Beckham

As true Spice Girl fans will remember, Posh was always one of the most fashionable ladies in the band. Little Gucci dress, anyone? And last night the singer turned successful fashion designer showed us why black always was and still is her best color. Victoria looked beautiful in her high-low Giles Deacon dress.

Geri Halliwell

Even though Geri strayed from the group way back when, we forgive her, and we're so thrilled that she joined the gals looking as Ginger-iffic as ever. Last night, the sexy gal flaunted her curves and her signature British pride in a red strapless Suzanne Neville dress with gold details. To finish off the look, Geri adorned her feet in glittery gold booties and threw an amazing Halo & Co gold filigree tiara atop her perfect blonde locks.

A bloody good line

True Blood beauty fans have a reason to celebrate. HSN has just launched a juicy collection inspired by the HBO hit series called "Forsaken." Read our review below to see why we're screaming bloody murder.

HBO and HSN: a partnership that's as sexy as it is dark. All True Blood fans have an extra reason to get all glammed up in their own darkly sinister fashion, with the launch of the shopping network's own Forsaken collection.

This gorgeous and deeply dark collection includes the following precious hauls:

  • A beautifully embossed Forsaken Eau de Parfum that contains plump, dark top notes of dark blackberry, Anjou pear and blood orange; middle notes of night blooming jasmine, sheer violet and black plum; and base notes of ebony wood, amber crystals, patchouli and vanilla. The bottle itself is dramatic, gorgeous and totally haute couture with its black calligraphy-like swirls and writing. Deep red lines swirl like vampire blood, and there's a darkly cute charm that festoons the lid. It's a collector's item, if there ever was one.
  • A sumptuous D.L & Company Glass Candle and Diffuser Set that's perfect for spicing up your home
  • A large Glass Decanter Diffuser Set with a highly ornate clear bottle
  • A gorgeous Deborah Lippmann Forsaken Mini Nail Trio with killer shades: New Flesh , Strange Love , Bad Blood
  • A Forsaken Body Cream
Deborah Lippman's Let It Bleed
Let It Bleed Deborah Lippmann nail lacquer with Keep Me on my Mistletoes on index finger

Worth the splurge?

Absolutely. The Eau de Parfum alone is a gem, with succulent notes and a sumptuous look and feel to it. Everything about it will make you feel out of this world. The nail lacquers go on evenly , and the stylish square-shaped bottle with the True Blood logo is something of a collector's item. And the brush is a dream... it will not spill your nail lacquer but preserve each drop so you can coat your precious nails.

HBO has announced that True Blood will be renewed for a sixth season that will premiere in June 2013.

Massage your
troubles away

If you're anything like me, you appreciate a good massage. And let's face it ladies, summer seems to be the perfect season to get one! The heat, all those painfully cute shoes we wear... we deserve it.

The only problem with spas? Sometimes you want a girlfriend to give you her honest opinion on whether or not it's worth your money. And that's where I come in. Over the next few months, I'll be bringing you features on some of the hottest spas and treatments you need to know about. Up today? The Blissage 75 at Bliss Spas. So how did my experience at Bliss Boston measure up? Let's see!

The info

Who: Contributing Beauty Editor Chrissy Callahan

What: Blissage 75

Where: Bliss Spa, W Boston

Why: Why not? Every girl loves a massage, and this one just happens to be the spa's most popular!

How much/long: 75 minutes for $155.

Bliss

Bliss massage room

The verdict

The treatment: The concept behind the Blissage 75? Well that's simple. If the standard 60-minute massage is a tad too short for you, this one tacks on an extra 15 minutes. During those 75 minutes of bliss, your troubled muscles are targeted and you're loosened up. A bonus? The massage includes a warm wax foot-softening wrap.

Atmosphere: Bliss is definitely my kind of spa. It's modern, cute and youthful. Right away it drew me in. The lounge is posh and colorful and filled with goodies -- snacks, magazines, etc. And the locker room had everything I look for in a spa -- lockers with secure locks, loads of space and plenty of after-treatment products like hairspray and body lotion to help get you out the door looking as good as you feel.

The experience: Everyone at Bliss was very friendly and helpful, and my masseuse was amazing. The treatment relaxed me and I loved the added bonus of the foot wrap. Another highlight? The music mix. It was modern -- think Beyonce -- and melodic without being too "ummm."

Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes. This is a reasonable price for the amount of time you get, absolutely. Plus, you get the bonus warm wax foot-softening wrap and you're able to use the spa's steam shower.

Back to school time is here which also means the rush of the morning drop-off. If hectic morning schedules leave you with little time to feel presentable, check out these tips and you'll be dazzling at drop off in no time!

Mom dropping off kids at school

Prep the night before

Prep a small makeup organizer with your morning beauty essentials. Keep these ready in the bathroom or on your vanity table. One of the major issues with putting on makeup or doing your hair is having everything at your fingertips and ready to go, so there is no searching for what you need. Try a makeup organizer such as these acrylic cosmetic organizers from The Container Store .

After you prep for your beauty products, lay out your outfit for the next day. One easy way is to have a hanging valet that can keep your outfit for you, such as the Coaster Modern Valet Stand Chrome Rack . While these are usually reserved for men's suits, there is no reason Mom can't benefit as well!

Makeup picksMultitask your makeup

With limited time in the morning, your best bets are products that have more than one function. Some products to keep in your kit are a tinted moisturizer or one of the new multi-tasking BB creams, such as Dr. Jart Renewalist BB Beauty Balm . In addition to having an SPF of 40, this power cream has skin care ingredients and oils to brighten and moisturize your skin, so you are treating, protecting and covering your skin at the same time.

Follow with a light diffusing concealer . One to try is NYX Cosmetics High Definition Photo Concealer Wand . This lightweight concealer will mask tired eyes and is creamy enough to reapply throughout the day.

Eyebrows and lashes are your next priority, so your kit should include a dual ended eyebrow pencil, one end with a spooly brush and one end with the pencil, such as Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil . Follow with a mascara that curls your lashes as you apply it, such as NYC City Curl Curling Mascara . Finish your look with a tinted lip balm with SPF such as Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm SPF 20 , so lips are luscious, moist and protected.

Easy hair

Now that your makeup is done, quickly style your hair. Keep on hand any products you might need such as hairspray, dry shampoo, hair bands and shine serum. If your hair looks oily, be sure to spray or sprinkle a dry shampoo to perk it up and add volume.

Luckily for stylish moms, the hair trends on the fall 2012 runways include ideal get-out-the-door-fast looks such as sleek ponytails and low volume hair. For a sleek ponytail, start with a dab of shine serum, and comb through hair. Next, part hair to your favorite side and pull hair back at the bottom of your neck. Finish by securing the ponytail low with hair bands such as Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Mark Cluster and you are ready to go.

Another fall 2012 beauty trend that is great for moms on the go is a fab hair accessory such as an embellished hair pin, clip or ponytail holder. Try a style such as the Jane Tran Bobby Pin Butterfly Set in fuschia and you now look like you took two hours, not two minutes, to get ready!

Coach Reagan SunglassesGlam your sunglasses

This is one of the sure fire instant ways to feel pretty in the morning. While oversize, dark Jackie-O type glasses are perfect for moms, a pair of glamorous, embellished sunglasses will make you feel even more special. Try a pair such as Coach Reagan Sunglasses , which combine crystals with tortoise shell rims.

Makeup as soon as you wake up

As soon as you jump out of bed in the morning and head to the bathroom, make it a habit to do your hair and makeup right then and there -- because it might be your only chance. If you feel like you want more time to get ready, it might also mean waking up 15 minutes earlier each day. Also, before the school year starts, do a couple of trial makeup and hair days, to time yourself and understand what you can accomplish in two, five or 10 minutes.

Caboodles On-the-Go SwagKeep a kit in your car

One final tip is to have a case in your car that contains duplicates of your morning beauty products, so that you always have them with you. Find a travel case that is durable and contains a mirror, such as the Caboodles On-the-Go Swag . Along with the beauty products, keep on hand cotton swabs, makeup removing wipes, deodorant, sunscreen and breath mints so you can always be fresh and pretty.

$

We can’t help it -- pink is one of our favorite colors, but we understand it can be a little on the cutesy side. With that in mind, this week on Pretty Little Things , we’re looking into chic, sophisticated ways to wear our go-to hue.

Toms Eliana pink suede ballet flats

Pretty flats

Whether you’re walking to meet your BFFs for brunch, running to catch a bus or biking around town, flats are a must for comfort on the move. We’re currently coveting this simple but elegant pair of Toms Eliana pink suede ballet flats for easy, on-the-go summer style . Pair these fashionable flats with anything from linen trousers to sundresses.

get-noticed pink pair

Sexy shades

Trade your basic black or tortoiseshell shades for this get-noticed pink pair . The sexy, oversize sunglasses with vibrant pink frames are perfect for adding some flirty flair to your summer look. Not only will you be protecting your peepers , but you’ll look great no matter what you wear them with.

dip dye T-shirt

Dip dye T-shirt

You can never have too many T-shirts. Whether you’re hitting the beach or heading to the mall, the easy-wearing tee never goes out of style. We jumped at the chance to add this lightweight pale pink dip dye T-shirt to our summer wardrobe . We’ll be throwing it on with faded cut-offs and wearing with our favorite strappy sandals.

Sophisticated satchel

Sophisticated satchel

While we admittedly own more purses than we need, it’s still hard to pass up something cute to add to the collection. Our next purchase: this stylishly structured pink leather satchel that perfectly balances sophistication with a touch of whimsy . This bag wouldn’t look out of place at a business meeting or the office.

Denim jacket

Denim jacket

There’s no rule that states denim jackets need to be blue. In fact, we love the idea of denim in a rainbow of hues. That’s why we couldn’t help but fall for this cropped denim jacket in on-trend pastel pink . Pair with basic black, gray and even neon.

Bold bangle

Bold bangle

No matter where you go or what you’re wearing, adding a pop of color in the summer is never a bad idea. One of the easiest ways to do that is with a piece of statement jewelry like this vibrant hand poured enamel bangle in fuchsia and orange .

Haute for teacher: Fall's hottest back to school teacher fashions

$

When we think about back-to-school clothes, students of all ages usually come to mind, not the teachers. So for stylish teachers returning to school this year, try the latest fashion trends to feel chic and pretty, not frumpy and boring. Luckily for trend-setting teachers, fall 2012 has the perfect trends to be conservatively fabulous -- ideal for educating students during the day and enjoying friends at night.

Black and white suiting

Black and white suiting

Suits in either all black or all white are a must-have this fall. Teachers can feel sexy yet classy in a slim cut suit to show off their shape without revealing too much. Try a blazer like the Studio Stretch Ruched Sleeve Jacket , which adds some flair to a basic blazer. Pair these with a pair of Studio Stretch Wide Waistband Editor Pants which have a low rise waistband and flared leg to make your legs look long and lean. At work, add a pair of stacked heel or platform pumps, like the G by Guess Verna Pump which give you stability and flair at the same time  . You’ll feel like a fashionista from calculus to cocktails.

Bohemian Prints

Bohemian prints

Bohemian prints were seen all over the runways this season. If your class is studying Shakespeare, try a long sleeve maxi dress in a bohemian print, such as this Eliza J Long Sleeve Maxi . As you recite the pages of the famous scribe’s plays, you will inspire your students during class and inspire your very own Romeo at happy hour.

Comfy sweaters

Comfy sweaters

Full, comfortable sweaters in a range of prints and silhouettes from slim to oversize are all the rage this fall. These should be your choice for a crisp, cold fall day. Try one like 3.1 Phillip Lim's Ka-Pow Sweater . Pair them with skinny jeans like these Rag & Bone The Dre Jean and comfy wedge booties like the Rory Ankle Boot . Whether you are teaching math or science, you will surely be the center of your class's attention.

Seeing red

Seeing red

While your students might make you see red when they don’t listen to you, you can make them see red when you wear fall’s hottest power color. Try it in a flattering wrap dress, like this Red Mosaic Wrap Dress by DVF . Paired with tall boots with a pointy toe and low heels like this pair from David Tate you will command attention at class and at cocktails.

Watch: Jill Laine talk tribal prints

Whether it’s Moroccan, African or Southwestern-inspired, the tribal trend has taken over many of the prints that we see in fashion this spring and summer -- which is why it’s our pick as favorite trend of the week!

Madonna's new signature lip color? It's Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge

Madonna wearing Aqua Rouge

Lovin' the bold, red lip for her MDNA Tour

Madonna's new MDNA Tour is packed with numbers that will keep anyone guessing what's next. But our focus is on her makeup: Check out what she's wearing on stage and get tips from her makeup artist.

Sometimes a good lip color takes months or even years to formulate. Just in time for Madonna's new MDNA Tour comes a lip color that you can't take your eyes off: It's that mesmerizing.

Aqua Rougue

Gina Brooke, who has been a longtime makeup artist to Madonna, is the perfect person to identify and create an iconic new lip color that will make heads turn. She spilled the beans about the partnership with Make Up For Ever, where she created an iconic red lip for arguably the most iconic pop figure of our time. Aqua Rouge is now in stores and you'll be seeing Madonna on stage wearing the glossy, come hither #8 shade, which was created specifically by Brooke for the performer.

The best part about this lip color is not just the fact that it's glossy and red. "This shade looks gorgeous on everyone," says Brooke. "The pigments are so strong that all you see is color, with no undertones." With a lot of lipsticks, you can see some undertone of color, and this is because the pigments are not that strong. Aqua Rouge is breathtaking in its vigor. The #8 color is a leap-off-the-page red. It's so easy NOT to miss. All you see is the lip color, and in this aspect, it's not unlike a pair of Louboutin red soled heels.

It's interesting to note that Brooke has focused more on Madonna's eyes than her lips the past few tours. The reason for this is because Madonna absolutely loves makeup for her eyes, from the eyeliner to the mascara. But this time, Brooke wanted the spotlight to be on the star's great pout. "No matter what, Madonna has the final say," says Brooke when we asked her how the red shade came to be, but she knew the iconic red lip was a must for MDNA.

Aqua Rouge is a double-ended wand, which gives you a thick red lip on one side and clear gloss on the other. Brooke advises you to apply the red lipstick carefully and then top it off with one layer of gloss so that your lipstick is completely budge proof. How do you take it off? Simply use a waterproof makeup remover to take it off .

The new Aqua Rouge line comes in 12 shades that range from the prettiest purple to the beigest brown. In addition to the #8 lip shade, Brooke used the following products on Madonna for her MDNA Tour:

Most of Madonna's makeup changes during her performances need to be done in 1.5 minutes, sometimes two minutes, so Brooke has to be lightning quick. She often uses her fingers to blend. You can use the Aqua Rouge on your lips to make you look "more strong, more elegant" says Brooke. It simply won't budge. If you don't want a glossy, too patent-leather-shiny effect, apply the lip color only without the clear gloss.

Of course the "gloss looks better on the stage," says Brooke, but both "matte and gloss" look great. Madonna definitely prefers the glossy look. The finish of the lipstick is great and it is very moisturizing, too. Use a liner first and then the lip color, to get a "pouty lip," says Brooke.

Make Up For Ever worked on the formula for three years and focused on the iconic red lip shade for six to eight months until they got it just right.

Brooke doesn't like a "perfect face" because she says it's very easy to create. "I prefer a face that's imperfect." Love your features, especially the nose that stands out a little or a big forehead because these are the traits that make you who you are, she advises. Even with models who have acne or psoriasis, etc., Brooke uses the power of makeup to conceal and make them beautiful, while letting them embrace their imperfections. "I want women to focus on what they love about themselves."

Regarding the red lip shade that she created for the MDNA Tour, Brooke admits, "I didn't want it to be a white skin, orange skin kind of lipstick," says Brooke. "I wanted it to be universal."

Our verdict

The Aqua Rouge is a killer lipstick line that really is solid and budge proof. Most other lipsticks we've tried that promise such longevity are very drying on the lips, but not this one! The texture is creamy and even, and it goes on beautifully. Choose to go matte or layer it with the gloss sealant -- this is one versatile wand that's as iconic as MDNA.

The knife vs. the needle: Pros and cons of non-invasive procedures

Cosmetic surgery can help, but it’s not always practical or affordable. When you’re a busy mom or a working woman – or both – taking two months to recover from a facelift or tummy tuck can be inconceivable. Plastic surgery’s non-invasive procedures are growing in popularity, but can they really deliver on their promises?
Aging woman looking in mirror

Cosmetic surgery can help, but it’s not always practical or affordable. When you’re a busy mom or a working woman – or both – taking two months to recover from a facelift or tummy tuck can be inconceivable.

What is practical?
What is affordable?

Plastic surgery’s non-invasive procedures are growing in popularity, but can they really deliver on their promises?

We’ve all been there: A casual glance in the mirror suddenly devolves into a scrutinizing analysis of every new wrinkle and fold, age spot and under eye bag. While preventative care is key , the aging process will inevitably bring about unwanted changes to your body, skin and hair.

Recent advances in aesthetic medicine are taking a new approach and making cosmetic procedures less invasive and more affordable. The question is, do they work?

Get the truth behind some non-surgical treatments receiving media buzz and see what they can do for you.

CoolSculpting

Promises to: Remove stubborn pockets of fat, such as "love handles" and "muffin tops" for a more flattering overall body shape.

How it works: Performed awake, a suction pad is applied to the skin in the targeted area, which is then dramatically cooled. The result is a process known as "Cryolipolysis," in which the intense cold targets and destroys fat cells without affecting other kinds of tissue. The entire procedure is performed externally and each treatment only takes an hour. Results will typically take six weeks to four months to be fully realized.

The reality: CoolSculpting is to liposuction what a camp fire is to a forest fire. Expect subtle to modest changes, and for many, the results are too subtle to justify an average cost of $2,000.

Shot"Vampire" facelift

Promises to: "Revive" the face without surgery using a combination of dermal fillers and platelet-rich plasma from the patient’s own blood.

How it works: A combination of temporary hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the face, usually around the eyes and under the cheeks. A sample of blood is drawn from the patient and the plasma separated. The plasma, which is rich in skin growth factors, or stem cells, is then injected into the patient’s face to encourage the growth of new collagen to improve skin’s health and appearance over time.

The reality: While the use of injectable fillers for non-surgical facial rejuvenation has clearly been demonstrated, use of growth factors and stem cells for facial rejuvenation is largely over-stated in the media. While growth factors and stem cell injections seem to provide some benefit, this branch of skin and soft-tissue rejuvenation remains in its infancy. Bottom-line: It’s a short-term solution with a sensationalized name.

NeoGraft hair restoration

Promises to: Restore long-term hair growth to thinning or balding areas of a man or woman’s scalp.

How it works: The NeoGraft machine streamlines the "FUE" method. Translation? Instead of cutting out a large strip of donor skin from the back of the scalp, as is required in the traditional hair transplant method, the machine allows the surgeon to remove and then implant individual hair follicles.

The reality: This is an effective procedure for hair restoration and a welcome alternative to the older surgical method. The procedure can be cost-prohibitive if the transplant area is significantly large, but no pain, no patient downtime and no scar make the extra bucks more than worth it.

When considering nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, it’s important to select a board certified plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist and to learn as much as you can about the treatment. Also, be sure to go in with reasonable expectations. Beware of overreaching promises – after all, plastic surgeons operate with scalpels, not magic wands. As with all things, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Hello SK Style Watchers! Last week we had a tutorial on what to know when buying vintage, and this week we’ll continue that conversation with my list of three vintage pieces that every woman needs to consider owning and incorporating into her style. What I love about vintage is the unique, one of a kind nature of these items and how they really allow your style to sparkle and shine. So you know with all that going on, it’s got to be my pick yet again as favorite trend of the week!

Trendspotting with Jill Laine: How to buy vintage

Jill share three must have vintage items to add a little retro flare to your look.

My choice: Vintage Mosell Gemstone Collar

Statement necklace

Fabulous, outrageous necklaces from the '60s, '70s and '80s are so easy to find and usually for far less than you would pay for a similar, modern necklace. Find one that speaks to you, and wear it with everything from a simple T-shirt and jeans or with your favorite dress for an evening out. Make sure it’s still in good condition, with no missing pieces. Remember, if there are problems and it’s not easy to wear, chances are you won’t wear it.

My choice: Vintage Mosell Gemstone Collar

My choice: Vintage Structured Snakeskin Purse

Structured handbag

These bags from the '50s and '60s are a dime a dozen -- they are everywhere! That means you can snap them up for reasonable prices, from $10 on up. I love how these bags have a prim, ‘ladies who lunch’ quality. And since they’re not large, they’re the perfect bag when you just need enough room for some mad money, lip gloss and an iPhone. Nine times out of 10, these bags are in great condition too, since they just weren‘t used that much.

My choice: Vintage Structured Snakeskin Purse

My choice: '70s Serge Nancel Paris Blouse

Voluminous blouse

From the '70s and '80s, these blouses are in ample supply and are the perfect complement to modern day leggings or skinny jeans. Be it a flowy '70s peasant blouse or an outrageous '80s metallic number, these blouses have style in spades! And what comes around goes around in fashion, so many times you can find these with polka dots, metallics and lace and other patterns that are on trend today. Being fairly recent in history, these blouses are usually found in good condition, but double check all around just to be sure.

My choice: '70s Serge Nancel Paris Blouse

Up next

So there you have it, SK Style Watchers! I hope you enjoyed this SheKnows mini-series on one of my favorite subjects: vintage fashion. Next week, we’ll be talking pre-fall -- what is it, and why does it matter to you? Thanks for watching! For SheKnows Style, I’m Jill Laine.

Willow Shields wowed us all with her portrayal of Primrose Everdeen, Katniss' sister, in The Hunger Games, and you could say we're a tad bit excited to watch the movie all over again when it comes out on DVD and Blu-ray this weekend!

Lucky for us, we got to chat with the young actress about her experience on set, her fave designers and her most stylish cast mates. If that isn't enough to tide you over until Saturday's Blu-ray and DVD release, we don't know what is!

SheKnows: The Hunger Games has turned into such a huge phenomenon! Were you a fan of the series before you auditioned for the role or Primrose Everdeen?

Willow Shields: I was actually just starting the books when I got the role. I was in the middle of reading the first book when I got the audition, so I was becoming a big fan and I was really excited about getting an audition for a role that I'd read about in a book!

Willow ShieldsSheKnows: This was such an amazing breakout role for you. Looking back on the experience, what was your favorite part of working on The Hunger Games?

Shields: My favorite memory was probably just hanging out with Jennifer [Lawrence] and acting with her because one minute we were really serious and crying in one scene and then the next minute we'd be laughing and playing jokes on each other.

SheKnows: That sounds so fun! So would you say Jennifer was like a big sister for you on set?

Shields: Definitely. She's so nice and such an incredible actress and we really bonded on set, so we definitely basically became sisters on set.

SheKnows: The Hunger Games on DVD comes out this weekend, and we're super excited! Can you tell us what's next for your character in the next movie, Catching Fire? [SPOILER ALERT!]

Shields: Prim kind of starts to grow up in Catching Fire and she has a little bit of a bigger role. Prim is just devastated when she finds out that Katniss has to go back into the Games so I think it's a really interesting time for Prim... I think it's going to be interesting to have to play a role like that.

"I really like fun clothing, really colorful too. My favorite designer is definitely Marc Jacobs and I really love Jason Wu and Christopher Kane."

SheKnows: OK now let's chat beauty! You looked so cute at the Kids' Choice Awards in Marc Jacobs . How would you describe your personal style? Any favorite designers or styles you like to wear?

Shields: Well I'm still 12, so I don't really know my personal style yet, but I think I really just like to stay young and fresh. I'm not quite sure what my personal style is yet, but I really like fun clothing, really colorful too! My favorite designer is definitely Marc Jacobs and I really love Jason Wu and Christopher Kane.

SheKnows: I know you're still pretty young, but are you into any particular products yet? Any must-have beauty goodies?

Shields: I'm really loving this brand of lip balm, Smiths. They have rose bud salve and all these different kinds and I really love that! It's incredible.

SheKnows: Did you pick up any fun beauty tricks while on set getting ready in hair/makeup?

Shields: Sadly no, but I remember me and Josh [Hutcherson] sitting in the makeup trailer every morning looking through all the makeup artists' binders full of [tutorials] on how to do these crazy butterfly eye shadow things and crazy lips and eyebrows and it was incredible!

SheKnows: Who was your most fashionable cast mate for The Hunger Games?

Shields: I thought Amandla [Stenberg] had awesome style, especially for her age -- I think she was only 12 when she started shooting. I remember every day I'd see her she'd have a different hat on and these cute outfits.

Get it now!

Make sure to pick up The Hunger Games on Blu- ray and DVD this Saturday, Aug. 18 at a store near you!

A fresh, clean feeling

Drugstore shampoo and conditioners have come a long way, baby. Now, the options for nourishing, nurturing and remedial hair washes are increasing -- bottle by carefully blended bottle. And let's face it, since the entire dandruff issue isn't appealing, wouldn't you rather have a sexy pair that deals with this elegantly?

The saying "an apple a day" is not just for the doctor's office anymore. It certainly applies to the beauty department!

The new Green Apple shampoo and conditioner by Head & Shoulders promise a long-lasting clean and fresh new scent and a nice, clean scalp. Since psychologists have determined the importance of scents related to moods and feelings, the brand brings a bouquet of crisp fruits, florals and clean musks to your daily shower routine.

What it promises

With the reformulation comes a bouquet of promises. Here are the claims and how they measure up:

  • A "fresh, clean feeling:" There's no question that this shampoo/ conditioner combo will leave your scalp and hair feeling really clean... not a "squeaky" clean, mind you, but a nicely moisturized clean.
  • A "vibrant" scent: The scent is pleasant but not overwhelming, so don't expect to find Charlie the fragrance in a bottle. If you're marketing something as a "green apple" fragrance, I expect it to be natural and pleasant -- which thankfully, it is.
  • "Pro Clean" technology for scalp and hair to have a long-lasting clean: This technology uses a blend of three specialized cleaning active ingredients that work together to remove oils and dirt from the scalp. It also uses ZPT , specifically targeting the removal of the Malassezia yeast that causes dandruff.
  • Long-lasting scent: According to the brand, a clean scalp is the basis for having a long-lasting scent. And the new Green Apple shampoo and conditioner have gone out of their way to formulate a scent with top notes of green apple, Asian pear and juicy wild strawberries; middle notes of lilies and rose; and base notes of jasmine, warm woods and soft musk. While the scent during the shower was particularly pleasant, I felt that it didn't necessarily last as strongly throughout the day. In other words, the fragrance is not overwhelming throughout the day. In my view, that's a definite plus because you don't want something so powerful that it interferes with your signature scent.

The bottom line: Not only does it clean the hair and scalp effectively, the Green Apple shampoo/conditioner is a gem for removing frizz . You may be inclined to buy it for the scent and the formulation, period, rather than an anti-dandruff treatment. Yes, it's that sexy, and we're thankful we tried it. More than anything, we'll be sticking with it during our summer haircare routine because of the fragrance.

Availability and pricing

And at $5 per 14.2 ounce bottle, it doesn't get much sexier because the delicious buzzword these days is value. This reformulation debuted in stores in the beginning of 2012, so you'll likely find them everywhere at mass retailers. The Green Apple duo joins the other 13 Head & Shoulders offerings that include Itchy Scalp Care, Classic Clean and Active Sport for men.

How safe are lash extensions?

Long, lush lashes are something we all covet, but some of us have less to work with than others. If mascara just isn’t cutting it, many people turn to lash extensions. But are they really safe? Woman with eyelash extensions

Long, lush lashes are something we all covet, but some of us have less to work with than others. If mascara just isn’t cutting it, many people turn to lash extensions. But are they really safe?

All about extensions

If you’re curious about this lash-lengthening option, we have the inside scoop on what to expect and how to make sure it’s done right.

To learn more, we turned to Christine Reed, beauty expert and owner of Christine Reed Lash Salon and Spa, for her take on the ins and outs of lash extensions.

Are lash extensions dangerous?

You can have permanent lash damage if the lash extensions are done incorrectly, Reed explains. “Lash extensions glued together at the base can cause your real lashes to fall out, losing multiple lashes at a time,” she says. “To put things into perspective, if you rip out a lash 20 times, the lash never grows back.” Yikes!

So how do you know if what you’re getting is safe? Before you commit, ask lots of questions. “Go to a place that specializes in lash extensions, not a nail salon,” advises Reed. “Be sure that your lashtician uses pharmaceutical grade glue and look at the lashes before they apply them. If they are made of plastic or feel heavy, ask for the most lightweight lash they have.”

Avoid a lash extension disaster

First things first; make sure your lashtician is certified. Once you get your lashes done, the best way to check if you have good or bad eyelash extensions is take a toothpick and comb through your lashes. If the toothpick gets stuck, you have glued-together lashes. This, as Reed already mentioned, can cause permanent lash loss. But if each lash is separated, the lashes have likely been properly applied, she says.

If you do find yourself with bad lash extensions, don’t wait. Do something about it. “Bad extensions should be separated or removed by a professional immediately. Do not have them removed from the same place that you had them applied,” says Reed. Another safety tip: Ask for the lash to be about the same thickness as your natural lash. If they are too heavy, it can really damage your lashes as well, she explains.

Getting it right

It is possible to get flattering, safe lash extensions. “If done properly, your real lashes will grow healthier and longer since you are no longer using mascara,” explains Reed. “It gives your eyes a lift without the use of plastic surgery. You look great first thing when you wake up without applying makeup, and it saves time getting ready in the morning,” she adds.

Expert lash tips

We asked Reed to share some of her top lash tips and trends for summer.

  • Never use waterproof mascara. The base of your lashes needs to be able to breathe so lashes can grow. Waterproof mascara prevents this.
  • Be very careful when using an eyelash curler as this can rip your lashes out.
  • Corner lash extensions are a very popular trend for summer, giving the corner of the eyes a little bit of flair. Another bonus, they are less expensive than getting a full set of lashes.
  • Adding a feather on the corner of the lash line is another huge trend this summer.

We have a total hairstyle crush on Bella Thorne's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

If you have a tween in the house, or if you're obsessed with pop culture like we all are at SheKnows, then you know who Bella Thorne is. In case you don't, let me tell you! The cute young actress is the hit star of Disney's show Shake It Up and a budding superstar. Now that we have that covered, on to the matter at hand!

I spotted Bella last week sporting a totally adorable hairstyle on the streets of NYC and just had to gush a little about it, so indulge me a bit. The 'do is really quite simple, but it's so darn cute that I can't help myself. My favorite part of this pulled back look is the illusion effect. Notice how it almost looks like a half up, half down 'do?

With the bit of hair draped over her shoulder, it's hard to tell at first what's really going on here. But if you look closely, you'll be able to see it's a low ponytail -- right on trend for summer! -- and separated bangs. Genius, right? Like the saying goes, it's the simple things in life.

We're loving Bella's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments! And check out other celebrity hairstyles!

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Carrie Underwood and Kristen Bell

Carrie Underwood and Kristen Bell's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood

This isn't the first time Carrie Underwood has landed herself on our best dressed list! The sweet country crooner always seems to dazzle in her casual chic ensembles, and this week she sparkled -- literally! -- at a concert in Rockefeller Plaza.

Carrie seems to look her best when she's glam casual, and that's why I'm loving this look. She paired her fun, on trend floral 7 For All Mankind shorts with an incredibly cute sparkly pink alice + olivia top and blinged out Brian Atwood pumps. Now that's the Carrie we know and love!

The final verdict? The look is summery fun and practical and Carrie seems to know what works best for her petite frame. The short shorts and pumps help elongate her legs -- but don't err on the slutty side -- and the top shows off her sparkly side. Well done, girl!

Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell always looks adorable, and ever since I saw her sloth obsession played out on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this year, I haven't been able to stop laughing. This week, the actress showed up to the L.A. premiere of her new movie, Hit & Run, wearing a black Jenny Packham jumpsuit.

Jumpsuits are having a major fashion moment right now, and at first, I wasn't sure about them, but when done well, they can look super chic. Overall, I think Kristen looks adorable and super fancy! She's rocking the look with attitude, and the texture of the jumpsuit -- satin bodice and jeweled detail at the waist -- adds a nice dimension to the look.

The final verdict? I would have liked to see the tailoring a bit shorter and/or have Kristen wear a more pronounced shoe to add a bit more height, but all in all she looks so cute so I'll forgive it this time!

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Brooke Mueller and Kelly Osbourne's fashions fell short in our new weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Brooke Mueller

Brooke Mueller

The good news is Brooke Mueller is out of rehab . The bad news is she wore this outfit. What the fug was she thinking when she wore this icky ensemble to the premiere party of CW's The Next in LA?

We didn't even know they still made plaid vests! They really should be left back in the '80s. Then Brooke went for Native American-esque accessories, including a beaded belt and tons of bracelets.

We love colored jeans but we just can't get behind these brown ones. Charlie Sheen's former wife topped it all off with a fedora.

The final verdict? Sorry Brooke, but your sense of style could really use some rehabbing as well.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne

Hey Kelly, just because you host E!'s Fashion Police doesn't mean you're exempt from rocking a bad outfit yourself. Kelly wore this matchy matchy look to the Samsung Galaxy Note in NYC this week, and we're slapping her with a fine.

It's just too matchy matchy for us. From her blue hair to the blue shoes to her Vivienne Westwood dress, it's giving us the blues. Just because you dyed your hair a crazy color doesn't mean your entire outfit has to match. The busy pattern and peplum combo is a bit much, too.

The final verdict? At least she didn't buy this dress. Kelly tweeted a thank you to Vivienne Westwood for letting her borrow the dress. Send it back now, please!

You've got questions, and we've got answers! SheKnows' contributing beauty and style expert, Luke Reichle, is taking your submissions and dishing out no-fuss answers! Today, Luke is sharing his insights on how to dress yourself with class and style! Celebrate yourself and get a glimpse into how the stylists do it!

Dear Luke,

I’ve been trying hard to put together a style for myself and I can’t seem to make it work. My outfits are a mess and nothing really goes together. What do I do?

Desperate in Delaware

Dear Desperate,

I know this answer implies that I’m still clinging to the Olympic Games, but it’s an addiction. Like shoes. So I know you’ll understand. If you listen to post-race interviews with winning athletes, one theme comes across most distinctly:  “I crossed a big finish line today, but it was the little finish lines along the way that got me here.”

It’s the same with the elements of style and dressing. You don’t arrive at a personal style like you’re getting off the A train and “Poof, you’re the Duchess of Windsor!”  It takes time, trial and error. You might do well to go into training. In the training camp of style, here are some of the little finish lines to cross along the way:

Woman clothes shoppingFind out what you like

Try it on. If you’re having trouble assembling a style, break it down and take it piece by piece. Explore one classification at a time. Try on jackets until you find the shapes that suit you and the brands that suit your budget. Do the same with pants, skirts, button-front blouses and knit tops. It costs you nothing to do this and lays the foundation for a superstructure of style.

While you're doing this you can…

Find out your real size

This is the prerequisite to, “Buy clothes that fit you.” Sizing has gone all out of whack again and now the kicker is that some lines are changing their fit by the season. Invest some time at your local mall to ascertain what fits you, at what size, in what brand. Bear in mind that there seems to be a corollary between size and price tag: The higher the price, the bigger the size. You might be a two in mass-market styles but you may find yourself buying sixes on the designer floor.

As a bonus, you’ll be able to order online with impunity.

Get a pair of jeans that fit you

I know. The horror. But then, so are wind sprints. You just have to power down and do it. I buy several pairs to take and try on at home where I can have a quiet little nervous breakdown in the privacy of my own dressing room.

Buy a proper bra

Actually, three proper bras:  A smooth cup for knit tops, a lace cup for woven shirts and dresses and, if you are endowed with a C cup and above, a sports bra with structure. The sports bra will be worn for, well, sports. In addition, it’s recommended that you wear the sports bra for sleeping. This keeps the girls from ‘traveling’ in your sleep, which can lead to stretching and micro-tears in the tissue that eventually will change the shape of your bust.

Put together a wardrobe of bras. Bras are like shoes. The more you spread out the wear, the longer they will last.

Boost your body image

These days are often referred to as “fat days” for their ability to make normally secure, confident women feel horrible about their bodies. So what do you do when a fat day strikes? Don’t hide -- put down the extra-large caftan. We have some simple strategies to ensure you make it through the day unscathed.

Play up your favorite asset

On days when you’re feeling less-than-ideal, your best bet is to play up your best asset be it your eyes, your hair, your lips or whatever else you don’t normally find fault with. That way, you have something constructive to focus on, rather than putting on whatever you put on. Choose a basic outfit and then focus on any one thing that isn’t causing you stress.

5 Body flaws that are beautiful >>

Wear something comfy but chic

Fat days aren’t the best times to experiment with items you’ve never worn, or stress yourself out about pulling together the perfect outfit. Instead, go with what’s tried and true and that always works. Going to meet friends for drinks? Throw on a well-worn pair of jeans, add a great pair of heels and a beaded tank -- simple but elegant. Going to the office? Grab a neutral sheath dress but pair it with bold pumps and statement earrings. The key is to stay simple but stylish so you’re comfortable yet still look polished.

wedge heelsFocus on accessories

Accessories can be a great way to put together an outfit despite feeling negative about yourself and having no idea what to wear. As we said above, put on something simple but chic and then jazz it up with get-noticed accessories. Even if you were planning to wear something totally wow-worthy you can still create an eye-catching ensemble with the right shoes, a fabulous bag and one piece of strategic statement jewelry.

Remember it’s just one day

Ultimately, the key to making it through a fat day is to avoid getting too caught up in how you feel. Remember, it’s just one day and chances are you’ll feel much better tomorrow. Do what you can to make this one day more bearable and then move on and focus on feeling more positive.

Hello SK Style Watchers! I’m sure you’re familiar with the traditional fashion seasons spring/summer and fall/winter, but have you ever wondered why designers launch additional collections? There are resort collections, cruise collections and now the latest is pre-fall. What is pre-fall exactly, and how can it work for you? What is Pre-Fall and why does it matter to you?

Hello SK Style Watchers! I’m sure you’re familiar with the traditional fashion seasons spring/summer and fall/winter, but have you ever wondered why designers launch additional collections? There are resort collections, cruise collections and now the latest is pre-fall.

What is pre-fall exactly, and how can it work for you? I’m going to talk about this precursor to the official fall season and three reasons why it can be great for your style! And since pre-fall offerings are everywhere right now, I’ve got to pick it as my trend of the week.

Trendspotting with Jill Laine: Pre-fall collections

For a style that will take you from summer through fall, Jill share what to expect from Pre-fall fashions.

Here’s the easiest way to describe pre-fall: It’s a marriage between summer and fall fashion. The fabrics tend to be lighter and summery, but the colors and patterns are muted, darker and more suited for fall.

Jeffrey Campbell Rumble Boot, $155, Urban Outfitters

Multi-seasonal

Pre-fall will make your wardrobe transition from summer to fall stylish and easy. Designers are getting better at giving us multi-seasonal items that work in our closets almost all year long. Pre-fall can be worn late summer, through fall, and sometimes, even into winter. This gives your wardrobe more versatility and can save you money.

My pick: Jeffrey Campbell Rumble Boot, $155, Urban Outfitters

Halston Heritage Jersey Dress, $345, Nordstrom

Warm weather plus

If you live where it’s still really warm in September and October, then pre-fall is your alternative to wearing cotton shorts and T-shirts. You’ll stay cool when the temperatures are still hot, all while you look fabulous in the colors, cuts and trends from the main season.

My pick: Halston Heritage Jersey Dress, $345, Nordstrom

Toggle Coat, $50, H&M

Fall into fall, early!

If you’re like me, I live for fall fashions. It’s my absolute favorite season. But many times, there’s a large gap between purchasing and wearing fall items -- it can be agonizing! Rather than throw us head-first into parkas and cable sweaters in August, savvy designers know we’ll be more willing to buy if we can wear it right now. Pre-fall indulges our instant fashion gratification -- buy it now, wear it now.

My pick: Toggle Coat, $50, H&M

Next week

So there you have it, SK Style Watchers! Three things you need to know to make pre-fall work for you. Next week, we’ll be continuing the fall fashion conversation. I’ll talk about how to effortlessly transition your summer clothes into fall, and I can’t wait for that! Thanks for watching, and for SheKnows Style, I’m Jill Laine.
