Get a leg up for summer

Summer is finally in full swing, so if you’ve been hiding your gorgeous gams underneath long skirts and skinny jeans all season, it’s time to do something about it. Flaunt what your mama gave ya and prep your pins for the warmer weather with these expert tips.

LaLicious Sugar Soufflé Scrub, $34.00 at lalicious.comExfoliate first

Prior to waxing or shaving, it's of utmost importance to exfoliate your legs. While this is no new tip, it is tried and true, notes YouTube fashion and beauty guru Holly Ann-AeRee. "You’re not only showing off more skin during the summer, but you're also wanting that healthy glow. And nothing makes your skin look better than taking care of it!" So slough away those dead skin cells, and let your legs shine.

LaLicious Sugar Souffle Scrub, $34 at lalicious.com

Gillette Venus & Olay razor, $11.99 at drugstore.comInvest in a good razor or wax

When it comes to choosing a razor or wax, it's okay to splurge, notes Sarah Dakar, in-house beauty director of celeb-coveted beauty brand Sonya Dakar Skincare. "Make sure you aren't using a product that has been sitting in your cupboard for a year, and with wax, check for expiration dates," she warns. "Your razor should be used a max of three times before tossing it. Otherwise, prepare for razor burn."

Gillette Venus & Olay razor, $12 at drugstore.com

Aubrey Crème de la Shave, $5.99 at aubrey-organics.comShave the right way

Shave during a warm shower, when the hair is nice and soft, advises Melissa Cavanaugh, owner and co-founder of Pulse Laser & Skincare Center in New York City. “Make sure your razor is fresh, and that the area has been prepped with a shaving cream or shaving oil first. If your legs have extra-coarse hair or are prone to ingrown hairs, shaving with the growth of the hair can often be helpful." After you're done shaving, Melissa recommends using a gentle astringent to keep the area clean and free of bacteria.

Aubrey Creme de la Shave, $6 at aubrey-organics.com

Aloe gelAnd at the right time of day

A little-known secret is that the time of day you choose to remove hair is essential, says Sarah. When shaving your legs, it's best to opt for an evening or nighttime removal. "Our skin swells overnight, so an a.m. shave is not going to get nearly as close as it would at night. Pick a time when you won't have to rush as well. Because whether you're waxing or shaving, you'll want to take your time in order to prevent any cuts or irritation."

First Aid Beauty Aloe Plus Soothing Gel, $20 at sephora.com

Nair Brazilian Spa Clay Shower Power Hair Removal Cream, $10.19 at drugstore.comTry a hair removal cream

Hate shaving? Try a pain-free hair removal cream that actually smells yummy instead! Nair's Brazilian Spa Clay for legs and body removes hair while you shower using Nair Shower Power technology. Simply smooth on your legs before you hop in the shower and step out with silky smooth skin that stays hair-free for days longer than shaving. You can't beat that, now can you?

Nair Brazilian Spa Clay Shower Power Hair Removal Cream, $10 at drugstore.com

Pure Fitness 5lb Dumbbell, $6.99 at sportsauthority.comDo some squats

To make your legs toned and tight for those short summer skirts and shorts, beauty and lifestyle expert and licensed medical aesthetician Kelley West recommends doing 40 to 50 squats a day while holding a five-pound weight.

We have a total hairstyle crush on Lea Michele's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Can I start off by saying I want my bangs to look this good? This week at Comic-Con, Lea Michele was rocking a sultry, summery look, and I definitely took notice. Let's break down the look: Her bangs are bangin', her ombre hair is so on trend for the season, and I'm loving the subtle wave going on here.

All in all, a really fun summer look, no? Sort of reminds me of Khloe Kardashian's enviable locks. In any case, I'm totally obsessed, and that's why Lea landed herself a spot as our Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

We're loving Lea's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments! And check out other celebrity hairstyles!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Justin Bieber and Leighton Meester

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Justin Bieber and Leighton Meester's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Let's all give a warm welcome to Justin Bieber as our very first male Fashion Fail! The Biebs is all grown up and he really wants us to know it. When he hit a red carpet in Sydney, Justin went for an '80s-inspired, denim-on-leather look. Check out his jean jacket, baggy leather pants and hightop sneakers.

Although Justin left his usual accessory, girlfriend Selena Gomez, home for this particular appearance, he did add a gold chain and stunner shades to his ensemble.

We're not immune to Bieber fever and Justin is a total cutie, but this fashion doesn't work for him. Leather pants should not be baggy and they should never be tucked into sneakers.

The final verdict? We love Justin's new mature musical sound , but he could use some styling help. Leather pants should always be tailored, and they'd look more chic with boots or loafers.

Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester

Hey, how did a homeless woman manage to sneak into the NYC premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises? That was our first thought when we saw this shot, but it turns out this walking fashion fail is actually a Gossip Girl starlet! What would her fashionista character, Blair Waldorf, say about Leighton's hobo lady look?

We know even celebrities like to go casual and comfortable from time to time, but a major movie premiere is so not the place to slack in the fashion department. The giant tan sweater reminds us of a Snuggie, and just like Justin, Leighton's footwear is also all wrong: The floral print kicks don't work with a dress.

The final verdict? You don't always have to wear a couture gown, but there's a way to dress casually while still looking cute and camera-ready. She would have looked great in a pair of colored jeans or a sundress with wedges or flats. Leighton should save this look for when she's heading to the matinee solo, and not for an A-list premiere.

Anne Hathaway in Batman

Me-ow! Anne Hathaway takes the big screen by storm this weekend as Selina Kyle – otherwise known as Catwoman – in the final installment of Christopher Nolan's take on Batman, The Dark Knight Rises.

Get Catwoman's
sexy look!

Kyle is known for her sleek black catsuit – and she wears it plenty in the film. The look was controversial with old school Batman fans – they thought it was too simple for the character. However, Hathaway said it serves its purpose.

"I love the costume. I love the costume because everything has a purpose, nothing is in place for fantasy’s sake, and that’s the case with everything in Christopher Nolan’s Gotham City," she told ScreenRant.com earlier this year.

However, it wasn't exactly easy to fit into it.

"The Catwoman suit. It was a psychological terrorist... the suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit... it dominated my year," she said. "I went into the gym for 10 months and didn’t come out."

Anne Hathaway: A dark, sexy end to Batman...? >>

We love, love, love Hathaway's style in the film – the streamlined-and-monochrome look just looks dramatic. Better yet? It'll work as temperatures dip into fall and winter.

Get Selina Kyle's The Dark Knight Rises look

To get Hathaway's The Dark Knight Rises style, think leather – or at least clothing that looks like leather. We're loving this one-shouldered dress available at T.J. Maxx. The designer dress is a steal for $200 – it's originally priced at $400.

Steal the look

For a daytime look, try these black denim leggings from Mango paired with a sleek black T-shirt, black leather booties from ALDO and a leather jacket from Soul Revolver .

The Dark Knight Anne Hathaway

Oh, and that amazing black lace mask Kyle wears while dancing with Bruce Wayne? We don't recommend wearing a mask to work , but we found this black lace headband on Etsy that is just enough drama for even the most benign of office wear.

As for makeup? Kyle keeps it simple in The Dark Knight Rises with a pale face and dramatically red lips. Our favorite lipstick to do the deed is Lancome's Rouge in Love Lipcolor in Rouge Valentine. Purr.

How to look unforgettable at the pool this summer

Few things can strike fear in the hearts of women like swimsuit season. With some exception, most of us live in a place where we are more or less covered from head to toe much of the year. Then summer arrives and with it the expectation that we are going to stomp around in something more revealing than our underwear. Read this so you can stop feeling terrified and start feeling terrific.
Proud woman in bathing suit

It's all
in your head

Few things can strike fear in the hearts of women like swimsuit season. With some exception, most of us live in a place where we are more or less covered from head to toe much of the year. Then summer arrives and with it the expectation that we are going to stomp around in something more revealing than our underwear. Read this so you can stop feeling terrified and start feeling terrific.

To look unforgettable in your swimsuit, you need two things — confidence and attitude. Unlike a swimsuit, sun hat and sunscreen, you can’t run to the mall and pick these two things up off the shelves. These two things are difficult to obtain, but not impossible.

It's all in the 'tude

Looking unforgettable at the pool starts long before you actually go to the pool. You are going to have to get in your swimsuit, look in the mirror and practice being at one with your reflection. Here is where much of the attitude comes in.

The first step is seeing the good, not the bad. Maybe you have a pancake butt but a pretty face. Good for you! If it were the other way around, you might have trouble. After all, people see your face every day. They only see your scantily clad tookus a couple of times a year, right?

See how this works? Maybe you have bingo arms but great gams. If you wear high heels with your swimsuit, and resist the urge to wave at the pool attendant for a drink, your legs will steal all the attention from your arms. Maybe you have a bit more of a gut than you’d like, but your chest looks amazing in your swimsuit. Buy a suit that hoists the girls up and cinches in your waist, and you will stand out.

There is always someone who looks better and always someone who looks worse

There is one simple rule to remember when it comes to having poolside confidence. There will always be someone who looks a lot better. And there will always be someone who looks a lot worse. Memorize that. As long as you find yourself somewhere in the middle, be happy with that. If you have confidence, it shows in how you carry yourself around the pool and nothing is sexier. The message you are projecting is, “Yeah, I know my a** jiggles when I walk. It’s my a**. You think I haven’t noticed? But I’m so much more than my bouncy butt and I’m not going to let it or my swimsuit define me.”

Don't look now, but you might actually start to enjoy yourself!

When you start to shift how you think, you will relax and enjoy yourself. And when you’re having fun, you look confident and sexy. You have to work hard at those things, but once you have them, they are invaluable. That’s why you can’t buy them at any price.

Most humans with two X chromosomes dread swimsuit season. But for many women, this feeling of doom far exceeds hanging by the pool. These women hate summer and long for when the thermometer drops below 60 degrees so they can cover every inch of their not-size-6 figure. That’s silly! Everyone should enjoy the beautiful weather, and we can help you do that — even if you are a bit un-slim…

Summer is not just
for the skinny!

Buy bigger sizes

It’s alarming how our vanity dictates the number on the shorts, skirts and capris we purchase. Remember, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. If you are pouring yourself into a size 8, but you are really a healthy 10, try wearing a 12. Think we’re crazy? Think again. When capris and shorts hang off of you, you look slimmer than you really are. Stick to the old rule of thumb of wearing dark colors whenever possible. Try it once. Tear out the size tag as soon as you get home if it makes you feel better. That number on the label should not define you. Feeling comfortable and confident is more important than a number.

Get a tan

We’re not here to debate how you get a tan, because there are so many schools of thought on how a little sun is good for you and how the chemicals in spray tans may be unhealthy. Just get some color. Here’s why: Brown fat looks better than white fat. Memorize that. It just does. Like anything, don’t over-do it. We’re looking for a healthy, sexy summer glow, not over-done rotisserie chicken.

How to get even coverage from sunless tanner >>

Swimwear

If you are going into summer with the jiggly remains of last winter still apparent, fear not. It’s all about accessorizing your swimwear. Have long, lustrous, amazing hair. Rock jewelry that makes everyone wonder, “Why didn’t I think to wear a necklace like that?” Throw on a pair of heels. Spend money on a beautiful wrap or loose skirt. Most of all, just have fun. We get in our heads about what other people think of our appearance, but the truth is we give ourselves way too much credit if we think we occupy more than about 30 seconds of someone else’s mental musings. Everyone else is too preoccupied with their own insecurities to worry too much about yours!

Bless the dress

If you don’t have a stunning collection of summer dresses, fix that. Now. If we are to speak on practical terms, dresses are about the most comfortable thing you can wear in the heat . Summer dresses showcase your best assets and hide the rest. If you’re bloated or you haven’t been on a run since the last Ice Age, no one will be the wiser. Everyone looks amazing in dresses. Look to Kirstie Alley as an example. When the scale starts telling her stuff she doesn’t want to hear, she reaches for her dresses. And she looks amazing. Best of all, men love women in dresses. Few things are more feminine or alluring.

Glowing Gleek

Lea Michele was glowing at last night's Teen Choice Awards, so naturally we wanted to steal her beauty secrets. We went straight to the source and sought out her hairstylist and makeup artist to get you the breakdown of her gorgeous look. You can thank us later!

Hair

Hair stylist: Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend

Inspiration: "For the Teen Choice Awards, I wanted Lea to look like a classic, sun-kissed California girl. I loved her Atelier Versace dress and wanted to show how a cool, young woman wears couture, so I kept her hair pretty natural with loads of texture."

Get the look:

  1. Start by applying a large amount of Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse to damp hair.
  2. Next, rough dry hair with your hands and with a diffuser attachment .
  3. When hair is dry, add another dollop of the mousse and scrunch it in hair to create fabulous texture.
  4. Taking 4-inch sections of hair, spray Dove Style+Care Thermal Replenishment Spray on hair, and then loosely wrap it around a 1-1/2-inch curling iron for a few seconds to give strands a loose wave.
  5. Next, spray Oribe Après Beach Spray all over while scrunching hair with your hands to create even more texture.
  6. Finish off with Dove Style+Care Strength & Shine Flexible Hold Hairspray all over to help keep your fab 'do in place all night long without weighing it down.

Makeup

Makeup artist: Celebrity makeup artist Melanie Inglessis for tarte

Inspiration: "The inspiration was California cutie meets couture! We really wanted Lea to look effortlessly gorgeous, so we kept the makeup simple and concentrated on bronzed, healthy skin but took it to the next level.”

Get the look:

Skin:

  1. Start by applying tarte’s new maracuja miracle 12-hour foundation to help create an even and glowing complexion.
  2. Next, pat on a bit of tarte’s maracuja creaseless concealer under your eyes and blend a tiny bit into foundation to help skin look flawless.
  3. Give skin a natural glow and freshness by swirling tarte’s cheek stain in true love onto the apples of your cheeks.
  4. Last but not least, make sure you keep skin shine-free with a bit of powder on your t-zone. Melanie recommends tarte's Amazonian clay finishing powder. And, make sure to dust a bit under your eyes as well, to set your concealer.

Eyes:

  1. For a simple look, emphasize eyes with tarte’s Amazonian clay waterproof cream shadow in shimmering bronze. “This added definition to her eyes while still keeping them natural looking,” Melanie says.
  2. Curl eyelashes to wake up your eyes, and apply two coats of tarte’s lights, camera, lashes! 4-in-1 mascara to define lashes and make them look fuller without creating clumps.

Lips:

  1. To accentuate bronzed skin, use your finger to apply tarte’s new glamazon pure performance 12-hour lipstick in pure. “It’s a light pink, and the creamy texture worked perfectly with her golden skin!” Melanie says.

Chic shorts for moms

If you are like most moms this summer, you are spending time with your children of all ages outdoors. Shorts are probably the most comfortable option in the summer heat. Check out the latest options that moms can wear to look stylish, hip and comfy at the same time!

High-Rise Leopard Print Shorts from Forever 21

Vintage high-waisted

High-waisted shorts were a runway rage and the style is great for moms. The look enhances an hourglass shape, so you look like one of the '60s bombshell movie stars while camouflaging larger hips or thighs. Wear them in a solid color with your kids, and for a little extra pizzazz, flaunt them in a leopard print like these High-Rise Leopard Print Shorts from Forever 21 and watch your husband go wild.

Denim done right

Denim done right

Denim shorts are a summer staple; however, when running around with the kids, it's probably a good idea to forget the cut-off Daisy Dukes. Instead try a slightly longer cuffed pair like these Women's Denim Shorts from Old Navy in Bardot .

Retro Print Skort by Free People

Skort time

It's a short, it's a skirt, no... it's a skort! Chances are your daughter wears skorts all the time. They are the perfect combination of function and feminine, so why shouldn't you wear them as well? You might associate these with playing golf or tennis, but you can also find fashion-forward styles. These are great with ballet flats and a simple T-shirt to make you feel like super mom can always save the day. Try a pair like this Retro Print Skort by Free People .

Gold medalist Nastia Liukin shares her beauty and style tips on and off the gymnastics floor.
Nastia Liukin

Gold medalist

Gold medalist Nastia Liukin shares her beauty and style tips on and off the gymnastics floor.

As we begin our chat, Liukin is busily getting ready to jet off to London for this year’s games — still remembering the moment she won her gold medal in 2008. While she won’t be competing this year, Liukin will still be cheering on Team USA — looking as fabulous as ever with her classic, sporty chic style.

Keep reading to learn her beauty and style secrets:

SheKnows: What is your beauty routine on and off the gymnastics floor?

Liukin: When I’m training, I don’t really wear too much makeup because you primarily sweat it off! But, when I’m in a competition, I do a little more, but still keep it natural. I focus more on my eyes with eyeliner and mascara.

SheKnows: What is your go-to beauty item?

Liukin: NARS Bronzer is one of my favorites.

SheKnows: Who are your favorite fashion designers?

Liukin: I love Max Azria, and I did a campaign with him a few years ago. While I’m mainly in sweats and leotards, I love wearing Alice & Olivia, Parker and Citizens of Humanity jeans.

"I’ve actually seen the leotards, but they are a secret for now!"

SheKnows: What do you think of this year’s uniforms?

Liukin: I’ve actually seen the leotards, but they are a secret for now! I will say, though, they have a lot of sparkles and rhinestones and are very patriotic.

SheKnows: What did you think about the leotard you wore when you won your gold medal?

Liukin: I loved my pink leotard, and it really became my signature color afterwards.

SheKnows: What is your plan for this year’s games?

Liukin: I will be in London because I am the active representative of the International Gymnastics Federation. I will basically be the go-to person between the athletes and this committee. I was elected by gymnasts worldwide to get the position.

SheKnows: What’s next for you?

Liukin: I have a partnership with Fisher Price for the Fantastic Gymnastics Dora doll! It incorporates my two passions: gymnastics and inspiring children. I’m also planning on moving to New York City in January to go to NYU. I’m thinking about studying sports management or maybe something in fashion!

Don't forget to check out this year's Summer Games' Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 27.

Women beach volleyball players are always out in the sun, so they are constantly battling the elements . On the other hand, these same elements make them naturally bronzed, toned and glowing. To create a faux volleyball goddess look, your skin needs to be bronzed and hydrated. Achieve glowing skin with a moisturizing self-tanner. Look for one that develops gradually and includes an SPF, like SuperGoop's SPF 20 Gradual Self-Tanning Sunscreen Mousse .

Athletes competing in swimming and diving are constantly in chlorinated pools, which can damage and dry out their hair. Apres swim, take off the cap and rinse your hair again followed by a spray leave-in conditioner such as L'Oreal EverCreme Nourishing Leave-In Spray .

It’s time to get your nails ready for the biggest event of the summer: the 2012 Olympic Games.
olympics inspired nails

summer games-inspired nails

It’s time to get your nails ready for the biggest event of the summer: the 2012 Olympic Games.

From fencing and football to water polo and weightlifting, there’s something for everyone. And while most of us won’t be making our way to London, we can still get in on the fun from home.

You don’t need to be a nail art pro to pull off these Olympics-inspired nail designs. All you need is a little creativity and patience, and you’ll be rocking a killer mani all the way until the Closing Ceremony.

Show your support for Team USA with a modern take on the American flag or let everyone know which event you’ll be cheering for with a sport-themed manicure. Try a look with fiery ombré nail art to represent the historic Olympic flame or sport the Olympic rings, the most iconic symbol of the event. Finally, celebrate with eye-catching gold, silver and bronze metallic nails. Take your marks, go!

Nail art designs: Team USA manicure

Steps to create this nail art design:

  1. Show your love for Team USA by sporting the iconic colors of the flag on your digits. For my red, white and blue polishes, I chose RGB Too Red, China Glaze Frostbite and a white nail art pen/brush from Models Own. If you don’t have a nail art brush, you can use an angled eyeliner brush, a Q-tip or a paper clip to apply the stripes. You’ll also need a silver glitter like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics in Arsenic.
  2. Paint your nails with red polish, except for a “status nail” on each hand, which you’ll paint blue.
  3. Using your nail art brush or other tool, paint thin diagonal lines of white polish across each red nail. It’s OK if they aren’t perfect -- they’ll still look great even if your lines are a little shaky.
  4. To create “stars,” apply small dots of glitter onto the blue “status nail.”
  5. Clean up around the edges with remover, and then add a glossy top coat. Now you’re ready to cheer for your home team in style.

Nail art designs: Olympic rings manicure

Steps to create this nail art design:

  1. The Olympic rings are the most iconic image of the Olympic Games, and since there are five rings, they translate perfectly into nail art. Begin by choosing five polishes in the colors of the rings, as well as a white or neutral base. I’m using China Glaze Electric Beat, Mattese Elite Almost Famous, Mattese Elite Black, China Glaze Gaga for Green and RGB Too Red, plus the off-white OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls as my base.
  2. Paint each nail with a neutral shade like white, gray or nude. I love how the colors pop against a bright or slightly off-white polish.
  3. Unfold a paper clip and carefully dip the end into your first color. Make small dots with the tip of the polish-dipped paper clip, forming a circle on the nail. Wipe off the paper clip and continue with the remaining colors until each nail is adorned with a ring.
  4. Before adding a top coat, make sure to let the colored polish dry completely to avoid smearing the festive rings.

Nail art designs: Summer sports manicure

Steps to create this nail art design:

Thumb - Swimming:
From diving to synchronized swimming, the pool is a Summer Olympics hotspot. Begin with a dark blue polish like China Glaze First Mate. After applying a top coat and letting the polish dry completely, cut a piece of Scotch tape with decorative scrapbooking scissors in a scalloped pattern to create a wave-like edge on one side of the tape. If you don’t have decorative scissors, you can freehand a wavy pattern onto the tape with a small pair of scissors. Press the tape firmly onto the nail and fill in the bottom portion of the nail with a brighter blue like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pool Boy. Carefully remove the Scotch tape to reveal your finished design.

Pointer finger - Tennis:
To get this simple tennis ball look, paint your nail with a bright green polish like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Wasabi. Using a nail art pen/brush, draw two curved lines onto the sides of the nail with white polish. It’s as simple as that!

Middle finger - Basketball:
Begin with a gold, brown or bronze polish like Sephora Vivid Metallic. Once the base polish is dry, pick up some black polish on the tip of a paper clip or a small nail art brush and carefully paint a vertical line down the nail, followed by a horizontal line across the center. Finish with two slightly arched lines at the top and bottom of the nail to create the classic basketball stripes. Make sure to let the polish dry completely before adding a top coat so you don’t smear your handiwork!

Ring finger - Gymnastics:
Gymnastics is one of the most-watched sports of the Olympics, and the still rings are an iconic symbol of the sport. Begin by painting your nail with a dark base like Kure Bazaar Mon Bleu. Paint two thin vertical stripes in the color of your choice from the top of the nail, stopping about half-way down. At the base of the stripes, create two small circles using a paper clip or a pointy Q-tip dipped in shiny silver polish like Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Silver Sweep. Allow the design to dry completely and finish with a glossy top coat.

Pinky finger - Archery:
To create an archery bull's eye on your nail, begin with a coat of white polish. Once the white has dried, paint an oval of black polish, just slightly smaller than the shape of your nail. Continue with blue, red and yellow until you’ve reached the center of the nail. As the circles get smaller, you can switch to a Q-tip or a paper clip to get a more precise design.

Nail art designs: Olympic torch manicure

Steps to create this nail art design:

  1. A small makeup sponge is the ideal tool for creating a gradient nail design with ease. In addition to the sponge, gather a gold, yellow, orange and red polish to create this fiery look. I’m using Color Club Disco Nap, Mattese Elite Almost Famous, Essie Meet Me At Sunset and RGB Too Red.
  2. Paint each nail with yellow polish. Once the yellow is dry, apply a drop of orange polish onto the tip of the makeup sponge. Dab excess polish onto a paper towel, and then begin sponging orange onto each nail, concentrating most of the color at the base.
  3. Apply red polish to a clean edge of the sponge and sponge the polish onto the very base of the nail. Don’t worry about getting polish on your skin. Once you’re happy with the look, use a small brush or Q-tip dipped in remover to clean up all excess polish.
  4. To create the gold torch, paint your thumb nail with metallic polish. Add a top coat for protection and shine.

Nail art designs: Gold, silver and bronze medal manicure

Steps to create this nail art design:

  1. For this chic metallic manicure, choose three polishes to represent the Olympic medals -- gold, silver and bronze. I’m using Color Club Disco Nap, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Silver Sweep and Sephora Vivid Metallic.
  2. Begin by painting a stripe of gold down the center of each nail. I like to do this freehand, but you could create perfect lines by using Scotch tape as a barrier.
  3. Add a silver stripe on one side of the gold, followed by a stripe of bronze polish on the opposite side.
  4. Clean up any stray color with remover and add a glossy top coat to bring even more shine to this podium-worthy nail art.

Sporty for play

Let's be honest, we've all thrown on a basic comfy sweatshirt to run errands or attend a kids' soccer game on the weekends. Well, fortunately for you, that plain top can now be your style staple this season when paired with a few key pieces: a vibrant skirt, colorful sneakers and a statement bag.

You will instantly transform into a sports goddess if you try this outfit — we’re pretty sure your friends will a.) be jealous and b.) run to their closets to steal your look!

Sporty for play

Hanes EcoSmart Crew Sweatshirt $5, Miu Miu Cotton-Twill Pleated Skirt $360,
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Sneakers $50, Nano Aoshima Leather Fringe Cap $104,
Forever 21 Keyhole Lock Crossbody $20

Sporty for work

Who knew track pants could be acceptable for the office? When searching for the perfect pair of "fashionable athletic bottoms," opt for something straight leg and black, and pair with a white blouse for the ultimate streamlined look. It's best to incorporate only one sporty item into a work ensemble, so you don't look like a gym teacher — unless of course you are one!

Pair your athletic pants with a simple, high stiletto heel, a bold cuff and a classic chain bag, so you can easily transition from the office to happy hour with your girlfriends.

Look cute as you ride: Bike-friendly fashions

Now is the time to trade four wheels for two and take advantage of the perfect biking weather, especially since the Summer Games are starting later this week! But along with the wind in your hair and the freedom to go just about anywhere, we want you to look stylish as you ride. With that in mind, we sourced some functional but oh-so-fashionable pieces picked out with your bike in mind.

Cute flats from Toms

Cute flats

While riding in heels is possible , we do suggest going for flats for optimal safety and comfort. Our perennial favorite flats are Toms, and we’re partial to classic red . These simple but stylish canvas uppers make cycling in comfort and style a breeze. Plus, for every pair you purchase, Toms gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need. It’s win-win!

stylish tortoiseshell pair of sunglasses

Sunglasses

Say no to squinting by sporting some shades that not only help you see better as you ride , but that also accessorize your outfit. We recently fell for this stylish tortoiseshell pair with pretty lavender accents .

urban-chic clutch

Bag

Talk about convenience, this urban-chic clutch not only looks great on your arm, but it also easily attaches to your rear bicycle rack . The structured bag made from weather resistant fabric has attachments that allow you to clip it onto the back of your bike. There are also multiple pockets and a detachable shoulder strap.

comfy cotton shorts

Shorts

Since skirts can be tricky to ride in we suggest opting for a cute pair of shorts. Denim can be too stiff for a comfortable ride, but these comfy cotton shorts offer a stylish yet easy-riding option . We love the chic blue and white Indian block print and the flattering fit.

Note

If you do plan on riding in a skirt, it’s a good idea to wear a pair of spandex or stretchy shorts underneath to avoid showing more skin than you bargained for. You can slip them off once you get to your destination.

Romper

If you don’t feel like wearing shorts and you don’t want to risk the wind lifting up your skirt, you can always change things up with a romper. They’re ultra-comfortable, cute and make for a bike-friendly outfit. We like this cute striped romper with relaxed shorts for easy riding . When you’re not riding, dress this piece up with wedge sandals, a colorful clutch and chandelier earrings.

I mustache you a question

Ladies are taking menswear to a whole new level... with mustaches. That's right, mustaches! Before you start to shop for your perfect ‘stache, here are a few facts about the mustache trend and tips for which one suits your style the best.

The birth of the 'stache

It is rumored that PETA started the whole mustache craze with their campaign “Grow Your Own Fur” back in 2010. PETA posted a picture of a rabbit wearing a fake mustache with “You can help stop the killing of animals for their fur by growing your own fur” as the slogan for the campaign.

The craze started off slow, but gained momentum by late 2011 with Movember -- a campaign in which men grow mustaches throughout the month of November to help gain awareness to men's health. Women decided to get in on Movember by sporting a fake mustache throughout the month. Movember even teamed up with Toms shoes to create a shoe with a mustache printed on the side.

Taboo on tattoo

Some mustache fans have even gone as far as tattooing the famed mustache onto their bodies. What’s the most popular spot? The inner index finger. Might seem like an odd spot to get a tattoo, but every time the index finger is placed between the nose and mouth, the tattoo will sure get a few giggles. The second most popular spot is on the lower back which puts a fashion-forward twist on the tramp stamp.

As more companies jump onto the bandwagon, more fuel keeps being added to the flames. Will this trend continue for all years to come or will it go down in ‘staches?

One thing's for sure, we're having fun rocking the trend in style! Check out our top picks for doing so yourself below.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Jordin Sparks and Gwen Stefani

$
0

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Jordin Sparks and Gwen Stefani's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks

Let's start with the positive, shall we? American Idol alum Jordin Sparks shed 50 pounds and her body is rocking, but you can't really tell from this Chagoury Couture dress she chose for the Teen Choice Awards in LA. Sure, her legs look amazing, but the empire waist on this black frock combined with the poufy skirt and short hem don't show off her svelte figure.

The bodice of the dress, with the sequins and flower designs, looks tacky and reminds us of something we might have worn to a high school dance. She also paired the outfit with purple Prada shoes, which don't really match anything.

The final verdict? Jordin's dress feels very '90s to us , but we love her pretty diamond drop earrings by Simon G and the sleek ponytail. We'd love to see the Sparkle starlet flaunt her slimmed-down self in an Herve Leger bandage dress.

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani

Is that Fashion Fail regular Lady Gaga strutting the streets in head-to-toe leopard print? Nope, it's actually the original platinum blonde bombshell, Gwen Stefani!

The No Doubt singer chose this Blumarine pantsuit on a week when the temps in NYC are topping 90 degrees F, and we can't imagine how she's not sweating to death in long sleeves and pants. Comfort factor aside, this look is pretty fierce, but the leopard on leopard on leopard is a bit much.

Animal prints are very in, but this is overkill. We can handle the blazer and pants together, but it would have been great to break up the patterns with a black tank underneath.

The final verdict? This is an easy fix. By trading just one of the printed pieces for a solid, Gwen would get our style props. And we totally approve of her red lip and her chic sunglasses: Both of those are always a do.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Taylor Swift and Lea Michele

Taylor Swift and Lea Michele's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

In my book, Taylor Swift can really do no wrong. Girl can sing, act and dress like a superstar, and she seems as sweet as can be. At this week's Teen Choice Awards, Taylor showed up looking amazing and ethereal in a white Maria Lucia Hohan dress, flirty Prada heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

I love how Taylor's having a lot of fun with her fashion lately and evolving her style with her age. The look is super sexy -- check out the flirty back! -- but it's also sweet and girly, so there's a nice balance going on here.

And take note of her chic updo, ladies! Taylor's dress is enough of a statement maker on its own, so it's great that she opted to sweep her hair up. Same deal with her jewelry -- Taylor kept the jewels at a minimum so they wouldn't compete with this gorgeous Marilyn Monroe-esque dress.

The final verdict? Lesson learned here? Less is really more. Taylor looks California girl cute but still sophisticated. Can someone go get this for me? Like now?

Lea Michele

Lea Michele

The more I follow Lea Michele's fashion escapades, the more I like them! This week, the Glee star really impressed me with her super cute ensemble at the Fox All-Star party in LA. Lea paired her pale pink Emilio Pucci Fall 2012 dress with metallic Brian Atwood pumps and a super on-trend side braid.

The end result? A look we all need in our closets this fall. Look at the flattering draping on this flawlessly executed dress -- nice, right? And the cinched middle adds an extra boost of flattery here too.

The final verdict? I might have suggested Lea wait until at least August to wear this, but hey, we could all use a little fall fashion forecast sooner than later, right? She does look gorgeous.
