Dangerous makeup ingredients: 5 You should avoid

0
0
Whether you like to shop online or in the actual aisle of your favorite beauty store, it's hard not to notice all the anti-aging and beautifying results the industry promises. With all the positive results these products promise, it's hard to believe that in the long run, they could turn out to be quite harmful to our health. Unfortunately, many ingredients in our favorite products do more harm than good.

Woman applying lip gloss

The beauty background

chemicals

Many big time corporations and their board of directors always want to squeeze more profit from every beauty brand and in doing so, they often leave the product development team with no other option but to use cheap ingredients and/or questionable filler options. Although some studies may have resulted in inconclusive findings about this topic, and/or may require further research, more often than not, a lot of said studies are funded by the very same companies pushing these kind of cheap ingredients.

Unless you possess a chemistry background, deciphering or even attempting to pronounce some of the words listed as ingredients of a cosmetic product can sometimes represent a bit of a challenge. To help identify some of the culprits next time you find yourself scrolling down the back of a skin care jar, here are five of my least favorite ingredients to zoom in on. It's up to you to decide whether to avoid them or not, but it's always better to be safe than sorry!

Parabens

Parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetics to help prevent the growth of bacteria. They are controversial as they have been found in breast cancer tumors and also have shown slight abilities to mimic the estrogen hormone . Parabens also have been shown to contribute to increased skin aging and DNA damage.

Phthalates

Phthalates are used as a solvent in cosmetics to help other agents dissolve better in creating a solution. Phthalates are known to cause reproductive and developmental toxicity, which in turn can possibly lead to detrimental health issues such as cancer.

Triclosan

Used as an antibacterial agent, triclosan is suspected of interfering with hormone function and may increase incidence of allergies . It can potentially interfere with aquatic life as it does not easily degrade . Triclosan may also contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Propylene glycol

Used as a detergent, solvent, wetting agent, foaming agent and conditioning agent, repeat exposure to propylene glycol can cause buildup in the system and may lead to skin irritation, nausea, headaches and more.

Mineral oil

This is a moisturizing agent and is also part of the formulation for perfume in cosmetics. It is a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Mineral oil is the leftover liquid. It is so abundant that it is more expensive to dispose of than it is to purchase! It has been known to potentially clog pores and could also decrease lung function, leading to pneumonia. Being a petrochemical, we all know that this industry is as non-environmentally sound as they come; a non-renewable source of energy/effective root cause to global warming.

The bottom line?

If we all paid more attention to what we put on our face and looked at the ingredient list instead of falling for the latest sensational ad campaign, the cosmetics giants would have no other choice than to revise their overall offerings. Your money is the clearest way to get through. As quarterly sales results pulse in with mediocre performance, make no mistake, the cosmetic giants will quickly change their tunes and turn to safer ingredient options, period, end of story. Let’s make this cosmetic world a safer place for us all and carry on shopping with better discernment.

Q&A with Nanette Lepore

Ohio native Nanette Lepore moved to New York City with $5,000 in her pocket and a dream of designing. Years later, she's built an entire fashion empire, complete with women's apparel, swimwear, accessories and fragrance.

Her designs have been seen on everyone from Michelle Obama to Taylor Swift, and now anyone can wear Nanette Lepore thanks to her new more affordable juniors' line, available exclusively at JCPenney, with everything priced under $50. We caught up with her at the L'Amour Nanette Lepore launch party in NYC, where she was joined by her daughter Violet , Vanessa Hudgens and Shay Mitchell.

Nanette Lepore with daughter Violet, Vanessa Hudgens and Shay MitchellSheKnows: When did you know that you made it?

Nanette Lepore: Well, I don't think I've made it yet! I always feel like there's a goal I'm not reaching. But I did notice a difference when I finally had my first fashion show because that was a big pressure point for me... I was terrified. So when I put on my first show, I think I at least took a huge step that I was avoiding.

SK: What's one fashion rule that every woman should break?

NL: I think that you should always overdress.

SK: How would you describe your style?

NL: Schizophrenic! It changes with my moods. I really like a mix of high and low fashion for myself... a nice, colorful mix.

SK: If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would you bring from your wardrobe?

NL: A bias cut velvet gown... it could be one of mine. And then a beaded Chinese jacket and a pair of over-the-top Miu Miu shoes. And then I would bring my own new flat sandals from this season... they're gorgeous and I love them to death. And one of my bikinis!

I think that you should always overdress.

SK: Who's your celebrity style icon or muse?

NL: Sophia Loren. I love looking at her because I just want to have my cleavage out and one of those sexy dresses!

SK: What are your Fashion Week must-haves?

NL: We always have a box of See's candies around and then a bucket of Starbucks coffee. We're just trying to get through without too many emotions, because it gets very emotional during that time. Everyone's working really hard together and long hours, so it's more about lots of laughs and jokes. That's a must-have!

Nanette Lepore's line for JCPenneySK: What do you think we'll be seeing on the runway for New York Fashion Week?

NL: It's always a surprise, isn't it? You'll be seeing a play on textures and a play on hologramism and a blurring of surfaces. There's just a newness to the fabrications and to the leathers and the way people work with them.

SK: What's the best advice you've ever given to someone else?

NL: I dispense a lot of advice about men at my company because there are obviously a lot of single women. It's always about a broken heart. Probably love the guy who loves you back!

SK: And the best advice you've ever been given?

NL: When my grandmother told me to have a baby and when my husband told me to start a business... so those two.

SK: What's your favorite part of being a mom?

NL: You get this companion that you never dreamed could be so exciting and fun to be around, so it's a surprise. It's fabulous!

Hot Valentine's Day
hair looks

You have your outfit picked out, your date night makeup look decided on, but what about your hair? If you’re still not set on a Valentine’s Day hairstyle, we’ve got you covered with four fab but easy-to-create looks.

Salon owner and lead stylist Marc Harris of Marc Harris Salons in Boston shares
his picks for four Valentine's Day-perfect styles, along with steps for how to create each look.

Bold and beautiful: Bouffant ponytail

Bold and beautiful: Bouffant ponytail

  1. Start by separating your hair into two sections, top and bottom. Pin the bottom half off to the side so it’s out of the way.
  2. Using a strong hold hairspray, generously spray the underside of the top section and then use a fine tooth comb to gently tease the hair on the top section. This is to create some sexy volume so you can get that bold bouffant effect.
  3. Once your hair is teased to the height you want, flip the section back and release the bottom half of your hair that was pinned to the side.
  4. Using a small brush, comb the teased area into the shape of a ponytail while grabbing the bottom half of your hair and pulling it all up into one ponytail.
  5. Secure with an elastic band that’s in a similar hue to your hair color for easy blending.
  6. To finish the look, spray the entire ponytail with a strong hold hairspray. Harris’ pick: Kerastase’s Double Force for a long-lasting finish.

Fun and flirty: Textured waves

Fun and flirty: Textured waves

  1. The prep for this fun look starts in the shower by using a curl-boosting shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Once you towel-dry your hair, it’s time to apply a volumizing product and then blow dry while scrunching your hair with your hands to add texture. The volumizing spray will also help ensure maximum texture.
  3. Once your hair is dry, add waves with the help of a 2-inch barrel curling iron. Start by taking small sections of hair and curling them around the iron instead of rolling the hair up to your head. Harris explains that this will create a looser, wavier style of curl.
  4. Next use your fingers to further loosen the curls and create a more natural-looking, tousled look and finish the style with a strong hold hairspray.

Soft and sexy: Half up, half down

Soft and sexy: Half up, half down

  1. Start by applying a texturizing spray to dry hair. Harris suggests Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray because it builds body and absorbs extra oil at the hair’s root .
  2. Next take a fine tooth comb and create an even part down the center of your head. Since the look is meant to be symmetrical, try and keep the part as clean and straight as you can.
  3. Use a 1-inch barrel curling iron, lightly curl various pieces of hair to create a loose, beachy-style curl.
  4. Once you have the waves you want, use your fingers to take 3-inch sections of hair from either side of your face and pull them to the back of your head. Secure with an elastic that’s a similar color to your hair.
  5. If you want to add extra interest to this style, Harris suggests incorporating a jeweled barrette or clip to cover the elastic. Generously spray hair with a light hold hairspray, followed by a few spritzes of a shine spray to complete the style.

Easy elegance: Low chignon

Easy elegance: Low chignon

  1. The classic low chignon starts with the help of a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Harris recommends Bumble and Bumble’s Curl Conscious line.
  2. Blow dry your hair with a large paddle brush to smooth locks as you dry them. Once it’s dry, part your hair down the center of your head and then pull hair into two separate ponytails — holding one in each hand.
  3. Next tie the two ponytails into a loose knot at the nape of your neck. Wrap one side around to the right and secure it with several hair pins. Repeat with the other side of hair and secure it with pins.
  4. If you need to, secure the completed bun with several additional pins and spray with a strong hold hairspray to complete the Valentine’s Day-ready look.

Beyond the blush brush: 6 Other makeup tools you need

0
0
Stocking up on your favorite makeup is only one part of the get-gorgeous puzzle. The rest is up to the beauty tools you arm yourself with. If you’re not sure where to start or what to focus on, we’re sharing some of our go-to tools to add to your makeup bag and telling why you need them.
1

Eyelash curler

Mascara will only take you so far, and if you really want to add curl and volume to your lashes, we suggest investing in a good quality curler that will really make your eyes stand out. By taking the time to lightly curl your lashes before applying mascara, you’ll see much more length and wow factor than if you relied on mascara alone. One of the best curlers we’ve tried is the shu uemura eyelash curler which tops most best-of beauty lists year after year for good reason. It’s well-constructed, easy to use and perfectly suited to all eye shapes.

2

Good powder brush

Good powder brush

The trick to applying powder is to do it with a light hand since too much can end up looking cakey or too obvious. Steer clear of that unsightly issue by applying loose or pressed powder with a large, soft powder brush that will ensure even yet barely-there coverage. Try Bobbi Brown’s powder brush for a foolproof way to get the perfect amount of powder every time you apply.

3

Oil blotting papers

Oil blotting papers

While not technically a tool, these oil-eliminating papers make a helpful addition to any beauty bag. Unlike when you use powder to minimize shine, these discreet little papers don’t add more makeup to your look or mess with your foundation. They’re easy to tote in even the smallest clutch and they really are a must-have — especially when someone gets out their phone to snap a picture. We like Sephora Collection Blotting Papers, which come infused with a variety of targeted skin care ingredients .

4

Concealer brush

Concealer brush

Trying to cover up a zit or dark circles can be tough to do with your fingers, especially if you’re trying to create natural-looking coverage . Rather than have your zit look even more prominent after trying to conceal it, make the cover-up process even more precise with a concealer brush. We’re partial to this one from MAC Cosmetics which makes blending ultra-easy.

5

Q-tips

Q-tips

Whether you botched your mani, over-applied eye shadow or just need to even out some other makeup mishap, there are countless uses for Q-tips when it comes to beauty. Stash a few in your makeup bag, a bunch in your purse and leave a few in the car so you’ll be ready for anything, any time. Best of all: They’re ultra-cheap!

6

Angled brush

Angled brush

Kind of a jack of all trades where makeup tools are concerned, the multitasking angled brush is a must-have for a variety of reasons. The sharp angle and small shape can be used to shape your lips, define your brows and even to create a sexy winged eyeliner look. Pick up Benefit’s hard angle/definer brush to really take your makeup look to the next level .

Padma talks beauty

We caught up with the Bravo beauty to find out how to look your best all year-round using what you already have in your house.

Winter can be tough on your skin, but we got Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi to share her skin saving secrets with us when we chatted her up at the Veuve Clicquot in the Snow party in NYC.

The Bravo star and new mom was positively radiant as she sipped Champagne, went ice skating and spilled her best winter beauty secrets to SheKnows. Padma says she definitely exfoliates a lot during the drier months, but she's also got a secret weapon in her bedroom that gives her that amazing glow overnight. Get your minds out of the gutter, people!

I think steaming is extra important to get rid of impurities.

"I use a humidifier in my bedroom," she explained. But if you don't own one or want to shell out to buy one, no worries. You can DIY!

"If you don't have a humidifier, you can also take a washcloth and wring it out and put it near your heater," Padma says. "You can also take a huge pasta pot, fill it with water and actually some aromatics, like a few drops of essential oil, and just put that on your stove and let that boil."

She also thinks it's essential to get steamy... for your face. "I think steaming is extra important to get rid of impurities and then moisturize right after that," she explains. While Padma normally hits a steam room, she says you can achieve the same results right at home.

"You can either do a steam room, which I do, or a steam shower. Or you can also just do it the old fashioned way, with a big shallow bowl of water and a towel," she says. And she even adds a secret weapon to her steam sessions.

"I add a couple drops of tea tree oil in the water as I steam," Padma recommends. "It's an antibacterial and it really opens your pores and then right away, you want to moisturize."

And just because she's in amazing shape after having her daughter Krishna doesn't mean the svelte star doesn't indulge. Padma noshed on sliders and decadent cheese fondue during the party, but she also hit the ice skating rink for some calorie-burning laps that night, too! The key? It's all about balance.

Q&A with Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly reveals her beauty routine, best red carpet moments and spills on the celeb closet she'd love to steal as she prepares to walk the runway during the annual Red Dress Collection Fashion Show today in NYC.

In support of women's heart health programs, Diet Coke celebrity ambassador Minka Kelly will strut on the catwalk in an Oscar de la Renta gown at the annual Red Dress Collection Fashion Show tonight to kick off New York Fashion Week.

We caught up with the fashionista while she was getting ready for the big event to get the scoop on why this program is so important to her, as well as her beauty and fashion tips.

SheKnows: Why is this Heart Truth program so important to you?

Minka Kelly: I learned that heart disease is the number one killer of women, so I wanted to use whatever voice I have to raise awareness and encourage women to take care of their heart. I'm most excited about the fashion show tonight because Diet Coke launched a program on their social media, where if you tag a photo on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #showyourheart, Diet Coke will donate $1, up to $100,000, for women's heart research.

minka's product picksSK: Can you tell us a bit about the gown you'll be wearing at tonight's fashion show?

MK: It's straight from the Oscar de la Renta runway! It's beautiful — long and very flowy, which will move very well on the runway.

SK: Now on to beauty — what are your three essentials?

MK: I always have to have my Aquaphor in my purse! I also love to highlight my eyelashes by curling them, so a good eyelash curler is essential. Finally, a little Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer can go a long way on the face!

SK: Time for some more fashion — what are some of your all-time favorite red carpet moments?

MK: I don't know if I've ever loved a red carpet moment because they're so nerve-wracking! But, in terms of my dresses, I adored my Oscar de la Renta dress at the 2012 Art of Elysium Gala. It was so fun for me! The electric yellow color was great. I also loved my custom-made DVF red dress I wore at last year's Heart Truth fashion show!

SK: If you could steal a fellow celeb's closet, whose would it be?

MK: I actually love Rachel Roy's style! I love the way she carries herself. Also, Mandy Moore's! I want to raid her closet!

SK: After tonight's fashion show, what's next for you this year?

MK: I just finished filming this movie The Butler with Forest Whitaker, where I play Jackie Kennedy. It was an excellent cast, so I'm really excited about that!

It’s all glitter and glam

ShoeDazzle’s new Chief Stylist Rachel Zoe shows us all the hottest trends this season and gives us a sneak peek of what we can expect from her come Fashion Week.

Interview with ShoeDazzle's Chief Stylist, Rachel Zoe

Designer Rachel Zoe chats with us about her new gig as Chief Stylist at ShoeDazzle and her tips for rocking this season\'s hottest shoe trends.

As the new Chief Stylist at ShoeDazzle,Rachel Zoe has her hands, or should I say feet, full.

“I’m super excited,” said Zoe of the venture, where she’ll be customizing style plans for lucky shoppers. “I think this is about being very on trend, but always with hints of glamour. That’s why we partnered because we live by the same mantra, being glamorous every day.”

The glamour was certainly showing through when we visited Zoe at ShoeDazzle’s headquarters in Santa Monica, where rows and rows of glittered, studded and sequined pumps lined the walls.

So what are the must-have shoes right now? Check out Zoe’s picks!

Rachel Zoe's ShoeDazzle picks

1

The sneaker

“For certain people, [this moment’s must-have] is the sneaker, that trendy new, fashion-forward sneaker. Yes, I am in fact saying that."

2

The ankle boot

“It’s everything. I like to say that the ankle boot is the new answer to the pump. More and more, I’m putting an ankle boot with a cocktail dress or a leather skirt.”

3

The sky-high pump

“Platforms are just getting higher.”

4

The accessorized shoe

“Studs are here to stay. Metallics, strappy sandals, it’s a love of glamour and glitz.”

5

The biker boot

“The biker boot is here to stay. I’m seeing it with maxi skirts, with leggings, with oversized chunky sweaters and cardigans.”

Toe tip

When matching a shoe with your outfit, either match the color exactly or go with a staple color. "If you have a red dress and you wear a shoe that is exactly the same color, then that’s OK. But if not, then go with black, nude, silver or gold metallic. Don’t clash with it because if you just miss, it’s completely off."

Along with heading up ShoeDazzle’s spring/summer style, Zoe is gearing up for her show at New York Fashion Week, and she tells us it’s sure to surprise.

“It’s going to be different than my last collections,” said Zoe. “It’s going to be classic, but a bit edgier.”

We’re looking forward to it! Check out Rachel’s shoe selections on ShoeDazzle.com and stay tuned for the fifth season of The Rachel Zoe Project, starting March 6 on Bravo.

Q&A with Cynthia Rowley

Cynthia Rowley held her very first fashion show in her NYC apartment, inviting every important fashion editor and even Andy Warhol. None of them came, but Cynthia had the last laugh when she won a prestigious CFDA award in 1994. And did we mention that she now has more than 60 stores worldwide?

Be yourself and take chances.
Be as different as you can be.

Of course, we RSVPed yes to hang with Cynthia during her pre-New York Fashion Week party to celebrate her new partnership with Lysol. In the midst of preparing for her own NYFW show, the designing mother of two sat down with SheKnows to share her style and parenting secrets.

SheKnows: What are your Fashion Week must-haves?

Cynthia Rowley:Lysol Touch of Foam, because you're working with fabrics and you have to be clean and you don't want your skin to be dry. And you definitely don't want to get sick, because we all work in one space. If one person drops, the whole team goes. Also Juice Press... I'm such a fan of that. I just discovered it this Fashion Week and it seems to be working. And a sense of humor!

SK: What trends do you think we'll see during Fashion Week?

CR: It seems like people are embracing black again. We're doing an alternative presentation this year so it's not a traditional runway show, and I feel like maybe people are starting to think about that. Maybe that will be sort of a trend. They seem a little boring to me, runway shows.

SK: When did you know that you made it?

CR: Winning a CFDA award feels really great and that's still a huge honor, and getting nominated for other ones is always nice. I think when I stopped worrying about whether I was gonna be around. It takes a long time to build a really strong brand that can withstand a tough economy. When it gets to be really fun every day, I think that's success.

SK: Who is your celebrity style icon?

CR: After the Super Bowl, I have to say Beyonce! We all came into work and couldn't wait to talk about Beyonce and how awesome she looked.

SK: How would you describe your own style?

Cynthia Rowley with daughter in 2007
Cynthia with daughter Gigi Clementine in 2007

CR: There's a certain amount of speed involved! I'm usually dropping one or two kids off at school and making breakfast and everything else, so speed is important. I try to somehow bridge the tough, tomboy with the more feminine and girly, so it always has a sporty edge and mixing those two.

SK: What's your favorite part of being a mom?

CR: Everything. It's really the best thing in the whole world. It's so much fun and makes me so happy. I sort of reinvented my work life when I had my second daughter. I now live and work within a two-block radius so they come and hang out with me all the time. Like everything, it's a balance. I had to figure out a way to work as much as I do because it's important to me, but I also can't get enough of hanging out with them. My daughter wakes up in the morning and says 'Tickle me!' It's like living with two stand-up comedians.

SK: What's the best advice you've been given?

CR: Hard works pays off and be thankful for everything. Be inventive and be curious all the time.

SK: What's the best advice you've ever given someone else?

CR: I try to tell people to be yourself and take chances. Be as different as you can be.

SK: What's one fashion rule every woman should break?

CR: Haven't they all been broken already? I don't know if there are any rules left to break!

SK: You've partnered with Target, Band-Aid and Roxy before. Why did you get involved with Lysol's Touch of Foam label design contest?

CR: I think it's really cool because it's reaching out to everyone in America to show their creativity and be able to express themselves in a way that people are going to notice.

Going au naturel: Jason Vitamin E Pure Beauty Oil & Dandruff Shampoo (Review)

Sometimes Mother Nature knows best

If you're going au naturel, you want the products to work — not just look green and pretty. So many women love the concept of organic but feel that the products leave them feeling a little short. How do Jason's products and others stack up? Read our candid review below.

When it comes to your skin care routine, luxury brands and creams are often the way to go. But what if you're a natural junkie and really want to put Mother Nature's offerings on your face and hair? Do they really work?

Take, for example, Jason's Vitamin E Pure Beauty Oil , which has 45,000 I.U of vitamin E — which is a lot! Vitamin E, which is fat soluble, fights against free radicals and the recommended daily allowance for vitamin E is actually quite small — around 20-30 per day. This unique blend also contains seven other unique essential oils including sunflower oil, macadamia nut oil, pistachio nut oil, camellia oil, borage oil, black currant oil and primrose oil.

But because it is a topical treatment, 45,000 I.U. may be just the ticket to getting the amount you need because only a little of the topical treatment actually goes to your blood stream. But we're not here to recommend Jason's mighty little bottle as a vitamin replacement — we're here to tell you if it works or not.

Because of the essential oils, the moisturizing component is large, almost as much as if you were using a cream with hyaluronic acid alone. That's why so many people shy away from natural products — as good as they may sound, many feel they don't work.

Jason's Dandruff Relief Shampoo

The vitamin E oil was great for daily use, on a standalone basis. The oil was so thick and emollient that a little did go a very long way, and there was some extra that you could use on your hair too. In the case of Jason's Dandruff Relief Shampoo , another natural find, we love the smell thanks to the rosemary, olive oil and jojoba oil in the formula. Colloidal sulfur is the active ingredient that fights the itchy scalp and the flakiness. The shampoo was gentle enough for daily use and the product really did help in our quest to find a natural find that stuck to its claim, which is a lot more than can be said for other products.

At the end of the day, this brand impressed me because not only was the packaging great, but the effects were immediate and solid.

Alba Botanica's Aloe Vera Shower GelHow to find the right natural beauty goodie

There are so many products that claim that they're natural and effective, and you spend your hard-earned money trying to find the right one for you. But here's the key: Find a product with genuine active ingredients. In the case of Jason's two products , there were plenty of active ingredients to go around, which make the product truly effective.

If you find that you're craving something calm and comforting, get a shower gel like Alba Botanica's Aloe Vera Shower Gel, which has a calming active ingredient: aloe. Other calming ingredients include chamomile and oats, which are active ingredients in certain natural products.

NYFW Kicks off

New York Fashion Week is here again, and last night, the stars flocked to Prabal Gurung's Target collection launch party, which had a carnival theme and surprise performer.

If you don't live in NYC or have the budget to shop couture, we've got great news — yet another amazing designer has teamed up with Target for an exclusive collaboration just in time for Valentine's Day!

Designer Prabal Gurung, whose fashions have been worn by Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Middleton, created a beautiful, feminine line for Target that was inspired by love. Last night, fashionistas Elizabeth Olsen, Carey Mulligan, Rashida Jones and Olivia Thirlby couldn't wait to get their hands on his clothes at a carnival-themed party. The line hits Target Feb. 10 and not only is it adorable, it's also seriously affordable.

"I don't think there's anyone out there who has better reach in terms of the audience, the platform they have and the quality of product that they do at this price point, so it was pretty logical and made sense," Prabal told SheKnows about teaming up with Target. "I feel good!" he said.

Ne-Yo performing at Prabal Gurung's Target collection launch party

Indeed! During the bash, which featured a carousel, rides, games, food trucks and a pop up store to shop the collection, Prabal mingled with celebs and guests alike and was front and center during a surprise performance from Ne-Yo, who sang "Let's Go,""Let Me Love You,""Give Me Everything" and "Sexy Love."

NYFW shows officially kick off today and SheKnows will be backstage, front row and at all the parties, so check back every day for complete coverage.

New York Fashion Week on the runway: BCBG

0

The BCBGMAXAZRIA show kicked off Mercedes-Benz FW13 Fashion Week today, and we got all of the scoop — straight from the front row.

BCBG NYFW 2013

What we saw

Black is back! The runway exploded with dark colors as the first model walked the runway — everything from black coats and dresses to beanies and bags! Leather was also prominent in this collection — especially laser-cut burgundy leather.

Our favorite piece

The outerwear! The outerwear seemed to be big, oversize and totally warm for the colder months. We drooled over this burgundy leather bomber with a gorgeous burgundy fur collar. The coat paired with a chic black LBD, tights and booties? Totally chic and glamorous!

What to buy this season

Are you a fan of BCBG? Well, since the collection that debuted today won't hit stores until fall, we're going to share our favorite piece from the current collection. We love this frock because of the classic design, mixed with the pop of unexpected neon. A total must-have for spring and summer! Plus — it totally performs a double duty. Here's how we would style this sheath for work and for play.

For work

Throw on a black blazer, a classic pump and a tote, and you're office-ready in minutes!

BCBG look for work

BCBG Elouise Print-Block Sheath Dress $298, Mango Suit Jacket $35,
Michael Antonio Love Me Pumps $49, Topshop Bowling Bag $80

For play

Since this dress is such a standout piece on its own, all you need is a bold accessory to make it nighttime ready.

BCBG look for play

BCBG Elouise Print-Block Sheath Dress $298, Topshop Spike Chain Necklace $80,
Chinese Laundry Triple Major Heels $54

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Hailee Steinfeld

We have a total crush on Hailee Steinfeld's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!
Hailee Steinfeld at Paris Fashion Week

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Hailee Steinfeld's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

When you show up to Paris Fashion Week, you've most certainly got to look the part, and Hailee Steinfeld did just that with this chic pinned up 'do and beret last month. From head to toe, this look is school girl chic on a whole new level.

I'm betting you'll be obsessed with the look too, so I turned to Justine Piecuch, stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, to get a step-by-step how-to. You can thank me later!

Get the look

"This look is one of the easiest to achieve and can be done quickly. This is a great go-to if you need to look done up on the fly," says Piecuch.

  1. Starting in the front and moving around the head, take vertical sections and curl. To give the hair a little bit of grit to work with, gently spray the curls with a dry shampoo or a light hairspray.
  2. To pin hair that's above shoulder length, gather all hair to one side and loosely pin. If pieces fall, just pin back into place. The look should be loose and relaxed.
  3. For long hair, or someone who has lots of it, clip off all hair above the ears. With the remaining hair, gather into a ponytail off to the side. Back comb this section and pin into place to create a cushion. Drop the hair previously clipped off and pin pieces at random into the cushion.
  4. To give a shimmer, finish off with a shine spray!

Tell us

We love Hailee's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments and check out other celeb hairstyles!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Miley Cyrus and Julianne Hough

0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Miley Cyrus and Julianne Hough's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Miley Cyrus filming music video with Lil' Kim

Miley Cyrus

She's just being Miley! Ms. Cyrus wore this fashion fail while filming a music video with Lil' Kim, and no, that's not a joke. Miley is totally trying a new edgy look lately, and while we love her cute cropped hairdo, this outfit is a total don't.

The black and white pants remind us of a jail jumpsuit, and the cut of them is giving poor Miley a serious case of camel toe. The fashion police are hauling her in for that felony! Pairing these pants with an equally tight, midriff baring top is also a no no.

Finally, the huge hoop earrings and beanie combo aren't working for us either. We know she can't be tamed, but it just seems like she's trying too hard to be funky these days. We prefer her glammed up instead of grungy.

The final verdict? This isn't our favorite look for Miss Miley, but we do love her black oversized Versace bag and cute loafers.

Julianne Hough at the Hollywood premiere of her new movie Safe Haven

Julianne Hough

Here's Julianne Hough at the Hollywood premiere of her new movie Safe Haven, although she definitely didn't play it safe with her wardrobe that night. Ryan Seacrest's main squeeze chose a super sheer Alberta Ferretti dress for the occasion.

The shimmery fabric on the lower half of the gown is pretty, but the beaded, embroidered and embellished part reminds us of something you'd find while snorkeling on a coral reef. While it looks like something's growing on Julianne in this dress, it's really not growing on us, sartorially-speaking.

The fit also seems wide in the waist and it's also not particularly flattering to Julianne's rocking body. Plus, the sheer paneling on her cleavage is a nip slip waiting to happen. We hope Seacrest brought the double stick tape!

The final verdict? Sorry, Jules, but we're voting this look off of Dressing with the Stars. Make sure your dress is tailored properly next time!

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence

0

Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain

Can I just start by saying how amazing it is to watch Jessica Chastain's style progress? Seriously, the girl is quickly becoming a fashion icon. And this week, the multitalented actress looked slinky and sexy in black at The Hollywood Reporter Nominees' Night.

I love a good peplum. It's forgiving, structured, and very visually appealing. What I love even more than a peplum, though, is a twist on the peplum. Yeah, I know, I've said that word enough by now! This sexy LBD works so well because it hits Jessica in all the right spots. It's fitted near the top and the thigh area to highlight her cleavage and toned legs, and it juts out in multiple spots around the waist and lower bust line to create a perfect hourglass shape.

The final verdict? This look rocks from head to toe, and is capped off with leg-elongating nude pumps. I love her soft waves and fresh makeup. Jessica has never looked so good!

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

By now you all know about my slight obsession with Jennifer Lawrence! This week, I'm crushing hard on the LWD she wore to the 85th Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon.

I always love a LWD in the winter time — who makes these crazy no white after Labor Day rules anyway? — and it's so fun to watch Jennifer switch up her look these days. The strapless silhouette is one she's been rocking a lot lately — the Golden Globes, anyone? — and it's working for her. I love the ruffles at the bottom and the sweet neckline, too.

The final verdict? What really got me about this look is the whole picture, not just the dress. Jennifer's hair is beachy and beautiful, her accessories are minimal, and her makeup is flawless as usual. Can she do any wrong?
