Golden Globes fashion face-off: Battle of the TV stars

$

Our favorite television stars really brought their fashion A-game to the 2013 Golden Globes. They all looked fab, but we decided to pit them against each other in a fashion face-off.

Smash

Megan Hilty vs Katharine McPhee

Smash star Katharine McPhee made us do a double take when she walked the red carpet in her daring Theyskens' Theory gown, co-star Megan Hilty also struck a chord in her red Novis dress.

Winner: McPhee. Too many stars opted for red for the Golden Globes, while McPhee took a fashion risk with her look.

Best dressed at the 2013 Golden Globes >>

Modern Family

Julie Bowen and Ariel Winter

The four main ladies on Modern Family— Sofia Vergara, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter and Julie Bowen— all know how to work the red carpet, but only one can win this fashion face-off. So, who's it going to be? Vergara was her typical sexy self in a black Michael Cinco gown, while Hyland went full sex kitten in her Max Azria Atelier gown and bombshell hair.

Bowen and Winter, on the other hand, went the safer route in their Halston and Valentino gowns, respectively.

Sofia Vergara and Sarah Hyland

Winner: Hyland. She looked fab, even if she broke out in hives Sunday morning.

Worst dressed at the 2013 Golden Globes >>

Nashville

Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton

Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton battle it out each week as Juliette Barnes and Rayna James on Nashville, but at the Golden Globes, they battled it out with fashion, not music. Panettiere looked fab in her Roberto Cavalli, while Britton struck a shiny pose in her neutral strapless dress.

Winner: It's a tie. They both look fab.

New Girl

Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone

New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel and Hannah Simone went for drastically different looks at the Golden Globes. We love, love, love Deschanel's custom Prada dress, but Simone also looked amazing in her glam gray gown.

Winner: Deschanel. We're so happy she's embracing designer fashion, 'cause it looks so good on her.

Last night's carpet was everything from fabulous to bland and a lot in between. Accessories were kept minimal, colors were kept classic, and everyone let their inner glam shine on the red carpet. Here are the noteworthy trends — some to keep and some to leave!

Trends to keep

It’s all about the sleeves

Stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Kate Hudson, Adele, Naomi Watts and Eva Longoria all wore sleeved gowns at the Golden Globes. It was rare to see so many sleeves on such a skin-bearing carpet, but this long sleeve trend was done right when sleeves had sheer lace accents, embellishments and low necklines.

Kate Hudson
Eva Longoria

What this means for you: This is great news for everyone out there who loves to cover their arms. To wear the sleeve trend right, your dress has to be sleek and should have something going on such as a lace or embellished trim.

Winter white, nude and blush

Forget about black or candy colored gowns. White, nude and blush stole the show as tons of stars kept it neutral and donned this lighter look. Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Amanda Seyfried, Helen Hunt, Megan Fox, Amy Adams, Francesca Eastwood and Lea Michele were among the many starlets seen living on the lighter side.

What this means for you: Don’t be afraid to wear your winter white, nude or blush. To avoid looking washed out, be sure to put some color in your lips.

Red hot

Red is always a popular choice on the red carpet because it makes you pop and looks great in photographs. But last night's reds were on a whole other level. Jennifer Lawrence, Claire Danes, Marion Cotillard and Zooey Deschanel chose a bright red with a more orange undertone and minimal accessories. By choosing dresses with orange undertones and simple accessories, it really made their look all about the color.

What this means for you: No matter where you’re going, whether to a high school reunion, an important meeting or anywhere you want to make an impression, go for the red.

Mermaid maven

With every red carpet, there’s always a silhouette that stands above the rest. Last night's silhouette to beat was the mermaid, which stars like Hayden Panettiere, Taylor Swift and Jessica Alba stepped out in. This silhouette, with its fitted bodice and flared out bottom, shows off your curves while staying on trend.

Jessica Alba

What this means for you: The mermaid style is here to stay. If a mermaid gown is too much for you, try a mermaid style skirt paired with a blouse or top to stay on trend.

Trends to leave

Unfortunately not everything was pure perfection last night. There were a few style trends that could have stayed at home.

Too much volume

No one needs extra fabric getting in the way of their super sleek look. Lucy Liu, Julianne Hough, Debra Messing and Julia Louis-Dreyfus got a little carried away with the volume and could have opted for a sleeker, more streamlined walk down the carpet.

Debra Messing

What this means for you: Learn a lesson and always opt for the sleek over the volume every day of the week. Less volume is always more slimming.

Edwardian high neckline

Rumer Willis and Kristen Bell opted for high Edwardian-like collared gowns but didn’t really do themselves any favors by covering up so much. This vintage look is best kept in the archives and not on the carpet. Not only does a high neckline keep you from wearing fabulous jewelry, but it also detracts from your face and can make you appear older.

Kristen Bell

What this means for you: Showing off the chest, collarbone and neck can be the most flattering way to shine. By picking a low V or scoop neck, you will appear thinner. No one wants to look like they are stuck in Edwardian times.

Golden Globes fashion face-off: Tina Fey vs. Amy Poehler

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler rocked the 2013 Golden Globes — both on stage and in their fashion choices. Now comes the difficult choice: Who looked better?

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey did the unthinkable: They made the Golden Globes the most genuinely funny awards show ever.

And they looked hot doing it.

The former Saturday Night Live duo showed us exactly what sort of night we were in for when they appeared on the red carpet looking seriously sexy in polar opposite outfits. Fey went the girly glam route with her L'Wren Scott dress and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, while Poehler went with a Stella McCartney pantsuit and Charlotte Olympia shoes.

Anya says: What red carpet trends at the Golden Globes mean for you >>

And how did Poehler get ready for such a cleavage-baring shot?

A spray tan, of course. The Parks & Recreation star got a custom tan courtesy of St. Tropez's skin-finishing expert Fiona Locke.

"She's going to have three costume changes with one that shows off some leg and I didn't want her to have to worry about, 'What will my legs look like?'" Locke told The Cut on Monday.

"I wanted to give her a golden, glowy look."

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey fashion

Mission accomplished.

Fey and Poehler only had a couple of wardrobe changes during the show — a form-fitting navy dress and two cleavage-baring gowns .

Who knew she had such a great set of girls?

Of course, it wasn't really about the fashion — it was about their cutting one-liners that left us dying with laughter.

The best line of the night? When Poehler skewered notoriously difficult director James Cameron.

"When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron," Poehler quipped, referring to Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow.

Oh, Tina and Amy: Please host every awards show ever.

Fashion face-off winner: Poehler. Her looks were daring — and they paid off.

Golden Globes fashion face-off: Marion Cotillard vs. Jennifer Lawrence

Red gowns dominated the red carpet at the 2013 Golden Globes. Two of the best red looks came courtesy of our fave actresses, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence.

Marion Cotillard vs. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence wasn't feeling so hot on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, but you wouldn't know it. The Silver Linings Playbook actress looked stunning in her Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, Brian Atwood shoes and Ferragamo clutch.

But don't ask her to explain the meaning behind the designer name.

"This is Dior Haute Couture. I don't really know what 'haute' means, but I had to say it,"she told Ryan Seacrest before the show.

Golden Globes worst dressed >>

Lawrence wasn't the only A-lister wearing red, though: French actress Marion Cotillard opted for a similar red Dior Haute Couture dress, though she paired hers with Dior shoes and a Christian Louboutin bag.

And, like Lawrence, Cotillard doesn't get too into fashion — she just uses it as a reflection of her personality.

"If I don't feel like myself in an outfit — if it makes me feel like a different person — I won't wear it," Cotillard told Time magazine last fall. "I always find something that's kind of crazy but at the same time is wearable and really looks like me."

Golden Globes best dressed >>

Okay, so who wore it better? We're going with Lawrence here, even if the bodice of her dress did feature those strange crumb-catcher things. The young actress is a star — and this gown just proved it.

We wonder what she'll wear to the Oscars? We'll be floored if it tops this.

How To Use a Round Brush in a Blowout

Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, shows you how to use a round brush during a blowout.

Step 1: Divide and conquer

Before you begin, make sure you are working with very clean, 1-inch sections of hair. It is always helpful to use a clip to create sections as well. Don't overwhelm yourself — take it one piece at a time!

Step 2: Wrap it up

When beginning to use the round brush, wrap your hair completely around the brush and pull through the ends, applying heat as you go. It is important to include your ends in the brush so you can seal them with a soft and shiny look.

Step 3: Pump up the volume

To add some extra bounce to your hair, use the round brush to pull the hair up and away from the base of your head. Closely apply heat while you perform this step and continue to wrap your hair around the brush.

Step 4: Keep at it

Repeat the motion of going over the hair with the dryer until each section is fully dry. Continue this step around the whole head, and maintain working in clean sections. It may take a couple times in order for each section to become completely dry, but be patient — you'll have great hair in no time!

Breaking any task into smaller sections makes for better results and a happier you. To curl your hair with a Style Winder, dividing your hair into smaller chunks will help you get a cute, consistent curl without a messy hassle.

Get the perfect curls

How To Curl Your Hair with a Stylewinder

Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, shows you how to curl your hair with a stylewinder.

Use these simple steps to avoid tangles and hassles when curling your hair.

To begin, find a comb and three or four hair clips that you know you can trust to keep the rest of your hair under control as you work with smaller sections.

Step 1: Do your part

Part your hair the way you want it to be in the end. This way, you know which direction to curl each chunk of hair as you go along. Don't wait until your hair is curled to decide between having your part in the middle or to the side.

Step 2: One at a time

Using your comb, separate your hair into clean, 1-inch pieces. Make sure you do not have strands of hair coming from all different areas of your head. You want to make sure your curls are going the same direction and won't get tangled together.

Step 3: Up, up and away

Before you curl any of your divided sections, use your clips to keep away the pieces of hair that you aren't going to work with right away. Clip them on top of your head.

Step 4: Stay close to your roots

Take one of your sections of hair and clamp the Style Winder onto the top part of the section, nearest to your roots.

Step 5: Away from your face

Wrap your curls around the Style Winder in the opposite direction of your face. Use your hand to take the thin chunk of hair and twirl it around the hot Style Winder.

Step 6: Spin it around

When you have your hair clamped and wrapped around the Style Winder, twist your wrist and keep the iron moving while you are creating your curls. This way, you can avoid unwanted crimps.

Step 7: Take off the heat

After two or three seconds, release the Style Winder and let your bouncy curl fall to your head. To avoid loosening your curl, don't run your fingers through your hair or touch the curled pieces. Spray with hairspray to keep your curls together.

How To Master the Basics of a Blowout

Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, shows you how to master the basics of a blowout.

Step 1: Get a fresh start

The secret to achieving the perfect blowout is to start with freshly washed and clean hair. Any excess product or oil residue will make it harder for you to get that sleek and smooth look.

Step 2: Section your hair

Neatly divide your hair in 1-2-inch sections around your head. This will help create a better foundation when you are using a round brush to get that voluminous look.

Step 3: Seal the deal

To get a frizz-free blowout, point the nozzle of the blow dryer down the hair shaft to help seal the cuticle. Make sure each section is perfectly dry before you move on to the next.

Step 4: Break it up

Once your hair is completely dry, comb your fingers through your hair. This will help break up the lines of demarcation, creating the smooth hairstyle you were hoping for. One more look in the mirror and you'll be out the door looking fabulous!

pesky flyaways

How To Tame Flyaways During and After a Blowout

Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, shows you how to tame unwanted flyways during and after a blowout.

Step 1: Use a styling cream

Starting about halfway down your hair shaft, run a styling or hydrating cream through your hair down to the ends to prevent flyaways while blow drying. We love Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum to keep things under control.

Step 2: Blow dry downward

When blow drying your hair, point the nozzle of your blow dryer downward while brushing out your strands. Using a natural bristle brush as opposed to a synthetic one will also help keep flyaways at bay.

Step 3: Tame any flyaways

After completing your blowdry, tame any flyaways that may appear by lightly spritzing hairspray all over and running a pomade through your hair.

What the stars' Golden Globes fashions really reveal about their lives

We can learn a great deal about a celebrity’s true self as expressed through fashion on the red carpet. Why they select one haute couture gown over another speaks volumes about what they’re going through at this moment in their lives, how they want to be seen by the public, and most importantly, how they see themselves.

We can learn a great deal about a celebrity’s true self as expressed through fashion on the red carpet. Why they select one haute couture gown over another speaks volumes about what they’re going through at this moment in their lives, how they want to be seen by the public, and most importantly, how they see themselves.

Despite the fashion aftershocks or “afterfrocks” and their stylists' agonized attempts to pull the best gowns for their client before the big day, when it comes to the final decision, it’s often made far more intuitively than you might imagine.

This year's best actress winner, Jennifer Lawrence, tried on just two gowns the day before the award show before selecting the third dress, a deep coral silk satin trumpet creation by Dior Haute Couture, to wear into the history books. I’ve spent longer deciding what to wear on a first date!

So let's peel back the layers of silk chiffon and the facade of hand-sewn sequins to reveal what some of Sunday night's most polarizing Golden Globes gowns really said about the stars who wore them.

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham

What her gown says: “I’m loyal, I’m real, but I still need your approval.”

Having grown up in the New York artist scene, the Girls creator and winner of best television performance elected to wear a gown by childhood friend Zac Posen. Lena’s decision to wear a gown by her longtime buddy reveals her deep sense of loyalty and commitment to staying true to herself in the face of her whirlwind rise to fame.

A self-admitted fashion lover and usually far quirkier dresser, Lena moved away from her edgier looks for her first major awards show, revealing her respect for the establishment but also her desire to be accepted more than she would like to admit.

She may be a fresh voice discussing contemporary women’s issues, but the classic corset and ball gown silhouette reveals she has a love for tradition and is a great student of past greats.

Lena bravely reveals herself in her writing and on screen performances, but when it comes to the red carpet and being a star, she still hasn’t quite come into her own and embraced her fabulous differences.

Our prediction: As Lena continues to ascend, expect to see her embrace an edgier more “her” look as she realizes that she needn’t fit into Hollywood's convention, when she can simply rewrite it. More edge, less fabric.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

What her gown says: “I’m a star and I can finally be myself in a relationship.”

If there’s anyone in Hollywood who knows that the right dress that dances between scandalous and spectacular can make or break a career, it’s Jennifer Lopez. Her navel-grazing leafy green Versace gown at the 2000 Grammy Awards launched her into a whole new stratosphere and turned her into J. Lo the brand.

At Sunday night's Golden Globes, Jenny from the block delivered the night's most risque and high fashion moment in a body-baring, cream lace Zuhair Murad gown that left little to the imagination.

Despite its almost nude look, the choice of virginal cream lace and long sleeves offered the perfect amount of modesty and ladylike appeal. This dress is classic Lopez — as she comes to terms with the fact that she is all at once a sexy, free spirited girl from the Bronx, a powerful mogul, a romantic who wants nothing more than to be in love and treated like a lady, and a proud mother of two.

After years of being in relationships where she either had to be “little miss perfect” or “bad boy babe,” she now realizes that she is a mix of both. The nakedness of this gown reflects an inner peace that comes with finally being in a relationship that allows her to be her true self .

Even her hairstyle — half slick, half classic — mirrors this dichotomy between naughty and nice.

Our prediction: Expect color and drama during the award season as she takes risks and owns every moment.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

What her gown says: “I want my talent to outshine my celebrity.”

No one plays the role of humble, earnest thespian more convincingly than Anne Hathaway. The Les Miserables winner’s white sequin strapless Chanel gown expressed a desire to show her unbelievable talent naked and unembellished for the world to see.

The white fuss-free detailing and clean, simple lines reflect her inner idealistic leaning. Despite her material wealth, this girl values ideas and ideals above all else. She is a perfectionist and principled in everything she does.

Her uncompromising approach to what she views as right and wrong is both her strength and her weakness. She can easily become so attached to the cause that she becomes extreme in her actions and morally judgmental in her thinking. Despite her holier-than-thou approach to life, if she believes in something, she will fight for it with her life, which makes her a loyal friend and a success in everything she attempts.

Our prediction: Expect a gown hiding a baby bump soon, as marriage becomes the focus.

More peplums, please

Bored of peplums? The trend that seemed to pop up on everything from shirts to skirts last year is still in full swing so it’s understandable if you’re over it. But peplums can still feel fresh and we’re sourcing five pretty pieces that breathe new life into the trend.

1

Tie cardigan

Cardigans can get boring in terms of shape and fit, which is why we were instantly intrigued by this cute cardigan with a fitted peplum hem . The simple sweater — with a twist — also features a peaked shawl collar and optional tie at the waist. We’ll be wearing ours with fitted pencil skirts and bold-hued blouses.

2

Pullover

Pullover

Peplums don't need to be overly structured. In fact, we prefer when they're a little more subtle, which is the case with this loose knit Ella Moss pullover with a peplum silhouette . Choose from poppy or navy and pair with your favorite jeans and comfy flats.

3

Stretch wool dress

Stretch wool dress

The basic sheath dress gets an elegant update with the addition of a flattering peplum waistline . The sleek stretch wool dress with cap sleeves and a fitted skirt is perfect for the office. It's a subtle way to add the peplum trend to your look and comes in either red or black. Pair it with a statement necklace in gold and a pair of platform pumps.

4

Belted tank

Belted tank

Add some sophistication mixed with sex appeal to your look for either evening or daytime with a white fitted peplum hem tank top . The crew neck sleeveless top also features a leather waistband, adding some edge to the otherwise feminine piece. Pair with your favorite dark denim, a boyfriend blazer and knee-high boots for evening or a daytime date.

5

Leather skirt

Leather skirt

Mostly seen on more feminine pieces, we were happy to see peplums in a less girly light with this bold yellow leather-waist peplum skirt with a lace-embellished blouse . The bright hue of the skirt combined with the printed blouse make for an eye-catching look that goes beyond the basics. Add some black ankle booties and a statement cuff to complete the vibrant peplum-based look.

How do hormones affect beauty?

Whether we realize it or not, hormones affect our beauty treatments throughout our lives. See how these body regulating chemicals control our skin, hair and body — and how to deal with them effectively.

The insides control the outside

Whether we realize it or not, hormones affect our beauty treatments throughout our lives. See how these body regulating chemicals control our skin, hair and body — and how to deal with them effectively.

Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Clear Skin CreamAcne

Remember your teen years when your skin had breakouts? You can thank androgens, a group of male hormones for the flare-ups. These hormones cause a surplus of oil which in turn causes acne. As we get older, many women experience acne in their 30s and 40s — even if they did not have it as a teenager. The unwelcome bumps are caused by estrogen levels declining faster than oil-producing testosterone . If you find yourself with mid-life breakouts, try a skin-care product that will fight both acne and wrinkles, such as Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Clear Skin Cream .

Demalogica's Chroma White TRx Brightening Regimen Melasma

We all love the glow of pregnancy, but for many women, the over-abundance of the hormone estrogen stimulates the production of melanin, the chemical that gives our skin its pigment. The excess melanin can cause melasma, which are brown patches of skin around the face. Birth control pills can have a similar effect, so women can experience melasma at any time in their lives if they're on an estrogen-based pill. To guard against the excess pigmentation, remember to wear sunscreen every day and use a skin care regimen designed to control hyperpigmentation, such as Demalogica's Chroma White TRx Brightening Regimen .

Derma e Hyaluronic Acid Rehydrating SerumDry skin

Women approaching menopause will find that their skin feels and looks drier than ever. This crocodile-like skin can be attributed to falling estrogen levels. Estrogen helps with hyaluronic acid production, so less estrogen means less hyaluronic acid. To ward off extreme dryness, use a pure hyaluronic acid serum daily, such as Derma e Hyaluronic Acid Rehydrating Serum .

Murad's ResurgenceSaggy and baggy

As women approach and enter menopause, testosterone levels drop dramatically, resulting in dehydrated and sagging skin. To combat these skin ailments, try using a skin care regimen targeted at women approaching, and during, menopause, such as Murad's Resurgence . These products help increase skin's firmness, suppleness and help combat wrinkles.

Read this before you eat that: How certain foods affect skin

While many of us have been crafting plans for the year ahead to navigate our diet scene in relation to our waistlines, we may have overlooked another factor that should influence our food and drink choices: our skin.

You really are what you eat

While many of us have been crafting plans for the year ahead to navigate our diet scene in relation to our waistlines, we may have overlooked another factor that should influence our food and drink choices: our skin.

The old adage, "you are what you eat," rings especially true for our skin, which quickly responds to the sodium-rich, sugar-laden foods that play a starring role at social gatherings.

Which foods do what?

Chips

Salty foods like snack mixes,
dips and processed meats

Consume too much sodium and dehydration and fluid retention occur, resulting in a puffy face and under eye swelling.

Ice cream

Foods containing dairy

While the clinical link between dairy and acne continues to strengthen, those who experience frequent acne breakouts have long been convinced of the connection. The suspected culprits are the hormones that are present in milk.

Cake

Sugary, high-glycemic foods like
cookies, cakes and canapés

Eating these foods leads to a spike in blood glucose levels. When that happens, inflammation may occur, which can lead to a host of skin issues, including acne. What’s more, consistent consumption of these foods may lead to premature skin aging, as they cause the degradation of collagen and elastin.

Variety of cocktails

Alcohol

Even a small amount of alcohol can cause blood vessels to dilate, which makes skin look red or blotchy while worsening the appearance of conditions like rosacea. Alcohol also dehydrates the skin, causing fine lines and wrinkles to look more prevalent. Additionally, a recent study showed that alcohol consumption decreases the antioxidant concentration in the skin, which reduces the skin’s ability to defend itself against free radical damage.

3 Rules of thumb for your diet

To keep skin in optimal condition, limit your intake of complexion-sabotaging foods, and instead implement these positive practices:

  • Stay hydrated. While an occasional cocktail is fine, skin benefits when water is your drink of choice. Most individuals are dehydrated so the importance of this step cannot be overstated.
  • Choose antioxidant-rich foods. Fruits, vegetables and nuts are not only loaded with vitamins and minerals, most also contain a good amount of antioxidants, which help to protect the skin — and the entire body — from extrinsic and intrinsic damage.
  • Eat before you go to big social gatherings. It’s more difficult to control your eating if you arrive to a party on an empty stomach.

Perfume can be pricey, but when you make your own fragrance, not only can you customize it to suit your tastes, but you’ll spend much less money on a great scent. All you need are a few ingredients and a bit of time to make a DIY fragrance made with vodka.

DIY fragrance made with vodka

For this fragrance, we used eucalyptus, orange and lemon essential oils for a bright, citrusy scent — perfect for the winter or summer months! Before using the fragrance, test it on the pulse points on your wrists to help ensure you can tolerate its use. Properly stored in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, your fragrance will last for about a month.

If you are pregnant, you should not use essential oils. For facts and safety information related to essential oils and aromatherapy, visit the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

Feeling a bit down in the winter dumps? Of course you are. You are at least five pounds heavier than before the holidays and you haven’t had a proper dose of vitamin D from the sun in months. Here are a few styles that will chase your seasonal affective disorder away…

Feeling a bit down in the winter dumps? Of course you are. You are at least five pounds heavier than before the holidays and you haven’t had a proper dose of vitamin D from the sun in months.

Turn that frown
upside down

Here are a few styles that will chase your seasonal affective disorder away…

Knitted blue headband

Knitted headband

A blue knitted headband is a must for a couple of reasons. Blue is a neutral enough color that looks great whether you're a blonde, brunette or a ginger. Headbands are the only way to keep your ears warm and look stylish without messing up your hair. You can't really say that about that goofy Cousin Eddie hat you got for Christmas, can you?

Snow Day blue crew sock

Socks

If there is one thing that universally makes women cranky about winter, it is having cold feet! Our feet also look pretty pitiful in the winter — pale with the sad remains of polish left from our July pedicure. Turn that frown upside down with cute, fuzzy, and most importantly, warm socks .

J Jill blue cardigan sweater

Sweater

Few things feel more luxurious than a baby-blue sweater . There is just something about this look that works for a lazy day in front of a movie marathon or as a departure from the blacks and grays of your winter work wardrobe. Just because the sky is gray and dreary doesn’t mean your clothes have to be!

Lancome Color design blue eyeshadow

Eyeshadow

If it is drama you seek, hook yourself up with some creamy blue eye shadow. This particular product from Lancome smoothes on and stays on — for 24 hours. It doesn’t fade or crease, so you needn’t hassle with inconvenient re-application. You don't have that kind of time because you are too busy trying to fit into your...

Eddie Bauer blue jeans

Jeans

Yeah, we hear ya. The word jeans is kind of a four-letter word after the holidays. Since having your significant other or your kids hold your jeans while you jump from the roof to fit into them is impractical , you need a pair of jeans that fit until you melt off some weight. Give these roomy pants a try . Once you're back to your pre-holiday feeding frenzy weight, keep these on hand for PMS days.

Maybelline color show blue eyeshadow

Nail polish for toes

Remember that nasty grown-out pedicure we were talking about earlier? Nothing will shake the blues like a fresh coat of polish on your toes . Blue is a great winter color, and it’s easy to kick this look up a notch with diamond or snowflake accents. How can you be grumpy when your toes look that amazing?

Blue earrings

Turquoise earrings

Your jewelry choices have probably become as tired and worn-out as those pajama pants you’ve worn all winter. Time to get some danglies that make a statement, and turquoise is an easy way to do it. Draw attention to your face with these darling turquoise earrings .

Sabre sunglasses blue

Shades

If you’ve freshened up your hair color and tweaked your makeup a bit and you still feel your winter look needs a dose of “wow,” try a new pair of shades. These blue beauties will make you feel like a movie star sunning herself on Malibu Beach, even if you live in Alaska.

Merona blue hobo bag

Purse

You know that saying, “You’re never too fat for a new purse?” Well, it was never truer than in the dead of winter when you’re carrying around an extra layer. Cheer yourself up with this darling purse . What is it about this design that makes us want to scream “buttah” at the top of our lungs?

Jessica Simppson blue pumps

Pumps

Regardless of what you think of Jessica Simpson’s music, the girl can crank out a mean high heel. And a blue pump  is essential for any shoe wardrobe. They look great with jeans but are neutral enough to add a little ba-dow to any dress.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Emmy Rossum and Hayden Panettiere

Emmy Rossum and Hayden Panettiere's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Emmy Rossum at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards

Emmy Rossum

Aww. I just had to say it, folks! Emmy Rossum looked so sweet and classy at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards last week. The Shameless actress rocked a sleeveless sparkly navy gown and glam waves to the show.

Embellishments are a hot trend this season, and they're a great way to dress up your look. Sometimes adding a detail like stars can make an outfit look childish, but here, Emmy does it well in a subtle way. What really got me is the tailoring of this dress and the saturated hue. Navy can come across as a bit boring on the red carpet, but here, the sparkly overlay helps it pop!

The final verdict? Shiny and happy. This look really makes me smile! The lesson learned? Don't be afraid of sparkle. When done right, it can help you stand out in a great way.

Hayden Panettiere at the 2013 Golden Globes

Hayden Panettiere

She's quite sassy on Nashville, but Hayden Panettiere looked super sweet at this week's Golden Globes in her blush Roberto Cavalli gown.

As a petite gal, Hayden needs to be smart about her fashion choices to avoid looking like the clothes are wearing her, and the actress chose right with this mermaid-shaped gown. The fluffy bottom helps extend her torso and her figure fits this dress like a glove. If you zoom in, you'll also notice the nice texture to this dress. It really blends quite nicely with her clutch, too!

The final verdict? It was really refreshing to see natural-looking hair on Hayden and I love her bubble gum pink clutch. Fun look!

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Jessica Chastain

We have a total crush on Jessica Chastain's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Jessica Chastain at the 2013 Golden Globes

There were a lot of amazing 'dos at last weekend's Golden Globes, but we'll highlight some of those next week! This week, I just need to give a shout-out to the lovely Jessica Chastain and the chic French twist she recently sported to the National Board of Review Awards Gala.

I love looks with a twist — get it?! — and this flawless updo works so well with the embellished neckline Jessica's dress features. Naturally, I want to know how to get the look myself, so I turned to Shannon Walsh, stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, to find out how we can all recreate the look at home!

Get the look

"Jessica wears this style beautifully with her natural makeup and simple black Alexander McQueen dress," Walsh says.

Tools you'll need: 1-inch curling iron, styling comb, paddle brush, bobby pins, hairspray
  1. Start by using your curling iron to give the hair body and make it more pliable when you pin it up later.
  2. Next, use fingers to "comb" out curls and lightly mist with hairspray.
  3. Now take the styling comb, and tease the entire head of hair. This helps give the bobby pins something to grab onto.
  4. Section out the mohawk and clip out of the way.
  5. Using the paddle brush, smooth out the rest of the hair, brushing it back and sweeping it to the left side.
  6. While holding the hair, use your other hand to slide in bobby pins vertically from the very bottom, criss-crossing as you work up the head.
  7. Now, gather all the hair and twist tightly to the right, covering all of those bobby pins.
  8. Insert bobby pins horizontally into the twist, so they intersect with the vertical pins, making the style secure.
  9. After, take out the mohawk section and lightly comb hair back, leaving a loose wave. Pin ends of hair into the French twist.
  10. Finally, spray with hairspray!

Tell us

We love Jessica Chastain's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments and check out other celeb hairstyles!
