Looking to do something a little different with your nails? Get inspired by today's hottest celebrities with these trendy manicure inspirations.

Ring finger color

One of the hottest nail trends right now is to paint your ring finger with a completely different polish than the rest. Often called a statement manicure or accent finger manicure, we aren't sure how or why this trend started, but we've seen it on a number of celebrities including Vanessa Hudgens, Whitney Port, Rihanna and Beyonce. You can use the same polish on all your nails and just add a nail art or a glitter top coat to your ringer finger. Or if you want something more dramatic, paint all your nails in a neutral polish and your ring finger in a bright or neon shade.

Blue nail polishBold blues

If you want to buy one color of polish this summer, make it blue. From pale baby blue lacquer at the office to bright turquoise polish at the beach, you can wear blue nail polish almost anywhere. We've seen dozens of celebrities sporting blue nail polish in recent months including Beyonce — who probably wears blue nail color in honor of her baby Blue Ivy.

Metallic shades

Metallic shades of nail polish are hot, hot, hot. You can wear a metallic top coat over your regular color for some shimmer or wear metallic lacquer on its own. Celebrities have been spotted on the runways and city streets wearing shimmery gold nail polish all year. We loved Jennifer Lopez's gold manicure at the Oscars.

Pastel hues

Jessica Alba, Ginnifer Goodwin, Paris Hilton, Michelle Trachtenberg and a number of other celebs have been seen wearing pastel nail polish in recent months. From pretty lilac to mint green to pale pink, the soft, feminine pastels are trendy without looking overdone. If you want to add some glamour to your pastel nails, add a glitter or high-gloss top coat. You can also incorporate pastel polish into the ombre look which has been popular for the past year or so.

How to pull off neon nails

Make a modern color statement the right way with trendy neon nail lacquers as bright and carefree as the season!
Bold summer style
Neon nails

Make a modern color statement the right way with trendy neon nail lacquers as bright and carefree as the season! Neon colors create a fun, flirty summer look... bright, bold and casual.

Boldest summer nail trend: neon-bright!

Done right, neon manicures and pedicures make a modern color statement that complements breezy summer fashions and can be very flattering to glowing golden skin.

Neon is happy and optimistic and adds some flavor to your look, but it can be difficult to pull off in an entire outfit. That's part of the appeal of neon-colored nails! You can add a pop of the season's favorite hues without trying to carry off a head-to-toe look.

Looking for more ways to update your manicure? Check out these cool nail designs before heading to the salon.

Choosing colors

Neon nailcolors offer enough options that every woman can find one that suits her personality and lifestyle comfortably. Bright pinks, corals and melons are suitable for nearly everyone, and they transition from the office to the beach very well. For work, the color can be toned down by wearing black, white, navy, beige and other neutrals. Just the pop of color on your nails, balanced by quieter clothing tones makes these neon nail colors more appropriate for the workplace. Generally, the more adventurous neon nail colors — lime, yellow and citrus colors, bright blues and turquoise — are not safe choices for work. Stay with the family of pinks, lavenders and melon colors that have just enough edge to follow the neon trend and can serve as an accessory to your business wear without being too bold.

For women who work in non-corporate settings and creative fields, the neon nail color options expand. Bright robin's egg blue, tangy lime greens and glossy yellows are hot and happening colors that you might try. Neon finishes are often flattering to skin tones, accentuating your sun-kissed look. The resort colors we favor in warmer months look fresh and fun, and so do bright neon nails! Punchy neon pink on perfectly painted toenails looks terrific peeking out of cute summer sandals.

Keep it neat

Keep your nails at a medium length if you want to pull off a great neon nail look. As with any manicure and pedicure, it's important to keep your color looking fresh by touching up and taking care of chips. Choose several neon colors and experiment! Part of the fun of the neon nail trend is changing it up and trying new shades. If a citrusy yellow makes your skin appear sallow, opt for the punch of apple green. If your normal go-to color selection is a safe blush color, amp the look up a few notches with a neon coral. Once you expand your color comfort zone, you may find yourself willing to try even more adventurous choices! Bright nails in neon colors are an easy way to add some sizzle to summer looks!

Quick tip

Neon nail color looks incredible when partnered with neutral fashions. Team up your neon nails with your summer whites, your favorite LBD or anything in a gray color pallette.

Easy gel mani/pedis

Gorgeous color that lasts for weeks is easy to achieve at home with gel nail polish for perfect mani/pedis!

Having a beautiful manicure and pedicure is a little luxury that finishes your look, but often women simply don't have the time or feel comfortable with the expense of regular salon appointments for the upkeep necessary to maintain their nails perfectly. Enter gel nail polish.

These smart new formulas for home manicures are easy to use and deliver gorgeous, glossy color that lasts without chipping. Best of all, you can do the manicure yourself for a fraction of the salon cost and get flawless results!

Ready, set, sensational

Prep your nails as you would for any manicure — remove cuticles and clean hands and nails to get rid of any oils and build-up of lotions. Gently buff each nail until they are no longer shiny — this helps the gel polish stick to the nail to ensure a longer-lasting manicure. Don't over-buff as it will weaken your nails. Wash your hands to remove residue from the buffing. When applying the color, always avoid the cuticles so the polish doesn't lift away as the cuticle begins to grow out.

Looking for more ways to update your manicure? Check out these cool nail designs before heading to the salon.

What color will you choose?

Try the salon-favorite OPI brand for their iconic colors in the new gel formula. These deliver intense shine with a fast application and quick curing time. Much like a normal manicure, you will apply a base coat before the color, then sweep on the first coat of gel color — sealing the nail tip by extending the color past it. Allow a minute of drying time for each nail under an LED light. These drying lights are inexpensive to purchase at a beauty supply store or online, and are a good investment for women who will be doing home gel applications. By the time you've applied color to the second hand, the nails on the first hand will by dry and ready for the last coat of color. Give your nails two coats of color on top of the base, and let the color cure for a full minute with each application. Many women finish off with a clear top coat, again allowing nails to cure and dry.

No more chips!

You now have gorgeous color that dries hard as plastic and doesn't chip! There's no sitting around waiting for your color to dry only to smudge or smear a freshly-painted nail as you fumble for your keys or a credit card. The shine is brilliant and your gel color should last up to three weeks.

By choosing an OPI color, you'll also have the option to touch up nails as they grow out with a coordinating nail color in their regular line. These gels are really easy to apply and are self-leveling for smooth results. When you want to remove them, they soak off in as little as 15 minutes.

Quick tip

Take time when applying to start as close to your cuticle as possible -- carefully, with no gel on the skin so any regrowth will be less visible and your manicure looks fresh longer.

Pink perfection
Pink pedicure

You definitely don’t have to be a total girly-girl like Elle Woods from Legally Blonde to wear pink. If you want to rock the color on your toes though, you do need a pro friend like Paulette to tell you what’s up!

Pink is the new Black

Here are seven tips for achieving the perfect pink at-home pedi .

Remove your old polish

First things first, you'll want to remove your old polish. Grab a cotton ball , and soak it with nail polish remover. Gently rub away any remaining color from your nails, making sure not to miss a spot. If you notice yellow stains on your nails after doing so, dip an old toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide and use it to scrub your nails. This should do the trick.

Soak your feet in warm water

To soften your cuticles and moisturize your skin, founder of Beauty Booked Hillary Hutcheson recommends soaking your feet in a bowl of warm water for about five minutes. Add some essential oils to the mix to create a relaxing, spa-like experience and really pamper your feet. Hey, after a long day, they deserve it!

Looking for more ways to update your nails? Check out these cool nail designs before heading to the salon.

Create your own scrub

Create your own scrub by mixing 2 tablespoons of granular sugar with your normal body wash, says Hillary. "Then massage into your feet to get rid of dry skin and/or rough spots." You can also use a pumice stone to buff away dead skin.

Take care of your cuticles

Now that your cuticles are all nice and soft, dab a drop of cuticle oil on each nail and then use an orange stick to gently push them back.

Trim and shape nails

If your nails are too long, trim them down first and then file in one direction to create a perfectly rounded square shape, says Hillary. Wipe any excess oil from nails using nail polish remover before adding a base coat.

Apply two coats of polish

After applying a thin layer of base coat, add two coats of pretty pink polish , waiting a couple of minutes between each application. If you're having a hard time deciding on a certain color, right now we're loving punchy pink brights and soft pastels for summer.

Add a top coat

Last but not least, finish off your look with a high-shine top coat to prevent chipping, says Hillary. "Let your nails dry for at least 10 minutes, and then you're all set for any summer occasion!"

Quick tip

Want to ensure your pink pedi really stays perfect for weeks? Try OPI’s new Gelcolor in Pink Flamenco or Strawberry Margarita for long-lasting color that wows!

Hello SK Style Watchers! What’s been around for over a century but is fresh, flirty, feminine and oh, so right now? It’s the peplum! The official definition of a peplum is a short, flared, gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, skirt or blouse. This extra fabric really emphasizes the waist, hips and female shape. Peplums have re-emerged yet again on the runways and red carpets, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Why you should be wearing one

Hello SK Style Watchers! What’s been around for over a century but is fresh, flirty, feminine and oh, so right now? It’s the peplum! The official definition of a peplum is a short, flared, gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, skirt or blouse. This extra fabric really emphasizes the waist, hips and female shape. Peplums have re-emerged yet again on the runways and red carpets, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Trendspotting with Jill Laine - Peplum

Fill me in

Today I’m going to tell you three reasons why you should be wearing a peplum.

Our pick: Peplum Skirt,

Skirt

First and foremost, a peplum is designed to show off a tiny little waist and give extra oomph to the hips, exaggerating the female shape or figure but in a classy and demure way. Peplums are great for many body types; they help add a little extra shape if you‘re skinny or straight, yet still look fabulous on curvy gals too. However, if you’re carrying extra weight in your waist, peplums are not a good choice since they’ll just focus on what you want to disguise.

Our pick: Peplum Skirt,

Our pick: Peplum Blouse,

Blouse

Next, a peplum can be worn in many ways and for many occasions, expanding the options in your wardrobe. Peplums in a dress or skirt can be worn to the office, as well as peplum tops worn with trousers. Skirts and dresses with peplums are flirty and show off your female figure, so they‘re an obvious choice for date night. Peplums in a top or jacket offer even more options and can be worn to the office or dressed down on the weekends.

Our pick: Peplum Blouse,

Our pick: Nanette Lepore Peplum Dress,

Dress

Lastly, peplums are right on trend, yet classic too. You know how there are trends that come but then go with a big thud? At this point in fashion’s history, peplums have been around long enough to be a classic. Like I mentioned earlier, predecessors of the peplum started in the late 19th century, though the peplum as we know it came into style in the 1940s. It re-emerges every so often. So, if it speaks to you, there is no better time than now to add a flirty, fun and feminine peplum to your style!

Our pick: Nanette Lepore Peplum Dress,

Up next

There you have it, SK Style Watchers! Three surefire ways to make the peplum trend your very own! On my next Trendspotting video, I’ll show you three reasons why you should be wearing the gold trend right now! Until then, I’m Jill Laine for SheKnows Style.

Ask Luke Reichle: Banish the body bullies

Secrets of the red carpet

In the aftermath of the Karen Klein video storm, it’s almost impossible to ignore the bullying problem. Sadly, this exhibit is only a teaser-trailer for the kind of tormenting that goes on in our schools every day. Apologies aside, bullying has ramifications that go far beyond the playground. I’ll give you an example.

To taunt me, one of my class bullies took to telling me I was fat. She used it as a greeting for several weeks until she moved on to torturing someone else. It was not so easy for me to move on. This experience set up an idea of myself as fat, to the point where this was the result: At the age of 17, I stopped eating for two months. I suppose today we would call it a “cleansing fast,” although I don’t think surviving on Carnation Instant Breakfast and diet soda qualifies.

Eventually I lost weight and wrapped up that installment of The Hunger Games. But the idea persisted. I internalize the voice of the Body Bully and for many years it was the authority on my image.

Body Bullies come in many forms. Here are two of the biggies, with some suggestions on how to deal with them.

Woman upset with figure

1

The Historical Body Bully

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror or caught your reflection in passing and made a disparaging remark, chances are this is the voice of a Body Bully you’ve been carrying around. We may be years, miles and many income brackets away from the actual taunt, but whatever the source, we’ve let it take up residence and continue to have its say.

Solution

Cancel them out! The best way to banish a Historical Body Bully is to take command of their voice. Should you see your reflection and start to hear, “You’re so fat,” say, “Cancel!” This action interrupts the habit of self-slander. Applied consistently, it will pre-empt the remark. The voice of the Body Bully will fade like a receding echo.

2

The Prevailing Body Bully

From the co-worker who makes fat jokes, to the well-meaning relative who persists in saying, "You’d be so much prettier if you’d just lose ___ pounds," to the friend/mate/squash partner who wants to know, “When you’re going to do something about your hair,” there are Body Bullies who populate our lives. While they might be unavoidable, it doesn’t mean we just have to take it.

Solution

Take direct action! It’s almost a universal truth that when you confront a bully, they back down. Let them know what effect their actions are having and that it’s unacceptable for it to continue. This can be daunting at first, but with a little practice, you’ll become quite good at it.

Here are some start-ups to put in your repertoire:

  • “When you say _____, it hurts my feelings so I’d like you to stop.”
  • “When you tell me ______, it makes me feel _____ so I’d like you to stop.”

Keep the focus on yourself and keep it current. Respond to something that is happening now. Dredging up past offenses will only murk things up. Be patient and be prepared to have to repeat yourself.

As for the guy making fat jokes in the workplace, let him know it’s not acceptable. If it continues, go to your boss. If he’s your boss, there’s always HR.

Chic chevron stripes

Chevron stripes are hot for the summer of 2012. We have seen them all over the fashion runways and the city streets, in everything from dresses to swimwear. These diagonal stripes are eye-catching, fresh and fun. Read on to learn more about chevron stripes and how to wear them.

Chevron stripes are diagonal stripes that come together to form a point. In history, chevron stripes can be found on everything from ancient rock carvings to coats of arms to military insignia. In the past few years, chevron stripes have become very trendy in fashion. They are bold and slimming, and can be the focal point of any outfit. You can wear chevron stripes in a variety of ways.

Start with a fun statement piece in a bold chevron stripe pattern. We love the Tommy Hilfiger sleeveless shift dress from Macy's in ivory and papaya chevron stripes. This dress is on sale now for under $80. The shape of this dress is very simple and figure-flattering, with the notched high neckline, angled pockets at the hip and basic shift silhouette. You can wear this chevron striped dress in a variety of ways.

Tommy Hilfiger Faye espadrille wedgesTeam up chevron stripes with neutrals

For a fresh summertime look that puts the emphasis on the pattern, team up this dress with neutral accessories. This Tommy Hilfiger dress would look fabulous with a simple pair of nude or brown sandals, like the Tommy Hilfiger Faye espadrille wedges. These adorable shoes are priced at $69 at Macy's. Add a low-key handbag and a pair of aviator sunglasses to complete your outfit. It's the perfect look for lunch with your girlfriends or a daytime date with your sweetie. Keep your hairstyle carefree and your makeup very natural.

Partner chevron stripes with florals

Don't be afraid to mix patterns this year when it comes to fashions. Chevron stripes look terrific when partnered with feminine floral prints. This look is very flirty and fun, but don't overdo it. Pick one statement piece in a floral pattern and wear it with this chevron striped dress. A flowery headband, a floral print handbag or even a cardigan sweater in a tiny floral pattern would work well.

Dress up chevron stripes for a night out

Though this chevron striped dress is perfect for daytime wear, it can also be dressed up for a night out this summer. Whether you are having drinks with the BFFs or heading to the club with your boyfriend, you can wear this dress in style. Add a stack of bangle bracelets in mixed metals to take this dress from day to night. Ditch your flats or wedges and put on a pair of strappy sky-high heels. Instead of a tiny clutch, wear this dress with a cute cross-body bag. We love the Tommy Hilfiger Bailey pebble leather cross-body in cafe au lait. This bag is on sale now at Macy's for just under $81. Finish off your look by pulling your hair into an easy chignon and glamming up your makeup with citrus eye shadow and a glossy lip color.

Tommy Hilifiger V-neck, short-sleeve tee

White tee

Short-sleeve cotton tees are summertime staples. You can wear them with just about everything in your closet. Start with a classic white tee like the Tommy Hilifiger V-neck, short-sleeve tee, available at Macy's for $25. For a night out, wear this tee with slim white capris or a flowing skirt in a vibrant print. Add bold accessories — a chunky statement necklace, an eye-catching bag and a fabulous pair of high heels. Tommy Hilfiger paisley print cami tank

Ruffled tank

The ruffled tank is all the rage for summertime. You can find ruffled tanks in bright colors, flirty floral patterns and other fun prints. The classic cami style is ultra-girly — making this top the perfect piece to wear on a special date. Partner this tank with a slim white skirt that hits a few inches above the knee. Skip the espadrilles and flats, and team up this skirt with a pair of strappy white sandals like the Tommy Hilfiger Nancy platform sandals, discounted to just under $47. With a printed top like this, keep your jewelry sophisticated and understated. A delicate necklace or a trio of thin silver bangles are all you need.

Striped top

Stripes are classic for summertime. From blue and white nautical stripes to trendy chevron stripes, you'll find striped tops just about anywhere. Though usually worn in the daytime, if you can pick the right top, you can certainly wear stripes out at night as well. Start with a unique color combination like the Tommy Hilfiger sleeveless striped tank in papaya and gold. Though this top looks spectacular with shorts in the day, it can look even better at night. For a summer party, wear this top with slim or skinny white jeans. With this outfit, carry an envelope clutch or a chic summer tote. Finish off the look with bold sandals in a vibrant shade of orange and add a unique cuff bracelet to complete the outfit.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato's fashions fell short in our new weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

We get that Disney darling Selena is all grown up and applaud her for stepping up her style: She's definitely rocking some more mature fashions as of late. But we're not wild about this feathered Emilio Pucci minidress she chose for the premiere of Part Of Me, Katy Perry's new movie.

First of all, it's a little too short. Even Selena herself appears to be trying to hold down the hem of the dress as she posed for pics on the purple carpet in Hollywood. It's a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen!

Then there are those unfortunate feathers. Combine those with the frock's hot pink hue and this look reminds us of a flamingo. Sorry, Selena, but we know you can do better.

The final verdict? We love how Justin Bieber's better half keeps it classy, so she should be careful not to show too much skin and make sure her hemlines are appropriate for a 19-year-old. Sometimes less is more! Cute shoes, though.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato

Oh dear, Demi. The X-Factor judge wore this floral dress from Topshop to the show's auditions in Providence this week. And we totally give the girl props for wearing a dress that's affordable, but this looks a little cheap.

The bold floral print on it is plenty busy enough, but then Demi went and threw a vest over the top plus a spiky statement necklace. Plus, she's pulling a Katy Perry with the pink hue in her hair.

We get it, girl! You're edgy and funky, but this look isn't working for you. But your fellow judge Britney Spears has been looking super fabulous lately in her Herve Leger bandage dresses, which she's worn to tapings in several different cities. Maybe she'll loan you one for the next time?

The final verdict? Between the hair, the floral print, the vest and accessories, there's too much going on here. Pick one statement piece or major trend and stick to it.

Blake Lively and Emma Stone's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively

Wow. I think that about sums up Blake Lively's look here! The sexy actress showed off her gorgeous figure in this curve-hugging Zuhair Murad beaded gown at the California premiere of Savages this week, and we're betting Ryan Reynolds was pretty pleased with the look.

Let's break down the look, shall we? The nude and black gown mirrors Blake's shape perfectly. It's elegant with a lot of sexy as well and it has a fab floaty train -- basically, it's a dream dress.

Blake complemented the look with perfect retro waves, a bold red lip and the absolute best shimmer cream .

The final verdict? Haven't I already said enough?

Emma Stone

Emma Stone

I'm kind of obsessed with Emma Stone's amazing red carpet looks this week, aren't you? The young actress really caught my attention when she wore this fun white number to the German premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man. The white hot Andrew Gn dress has a lot going on, but it somehow just works!

I'm loving the crisscross chest, the bold middle bow and the prominent shoulders and think Emma looks mature yet flirty at the same time.

The final verdict? Forget The Amazing Spider-Man, Emma's styles have been simply amazing this whole press tour, and I can't wait to see what other fashion tricks she has up her sleeves.

We have a total hairstyle crush on Blake Lively's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

How gorgeous does Blake Lively look in these glam curls? The Gossip Girl actress and Ryan Reynolds' main squeeze flaunted her sunny locks at the California premiere of Savages this week, and I'm drooling over the look.

Seriously, her hair looks like perfection -- shiny, voluminous and parted at the right point. A+ girl! The look is also a nice change from her signature casual beach girl strands, if you ask me. Blake complemented her look with a bold red lip and a sexy curve-hugging Zuhair Murad beaded gown.

We're loving Blake's cute hairstyle! How about you? Sound off in the comments! And check out other celebrity hairstyles!

Let’s face it -- sporting red, white and blue from head to toe doesn’t exactly scream style. But there a few fun ways to show your patriotism that don’t mean wearing an outfit that looks more like a flag than something fashionable.

nautical-inspired canvas tote

Tote bag

One of summer’s must-buys is a large, durable tote bag you can take anywhere -- from a pool party to a road trip. No matter what you’re doing this 4th of July, you’ll look fab with this nautical-inspired canvas tote on your arm . The navy and cream canvas bag is anchored by red and white rope handles for a fresh, fun summer look.

geometric crystal bracelet

Bracelet

Add some bling to your 4th of July ensemble for a subtle but stylish way to look patriotic. We love this multicolor geometric crystal bracelet with sparkly pops of red, blue and white . This eye-catching piece has a sense of playfulness perfect for summer but is elegant enough to wear when the sun goes down.

red, white and blue striped tie strap dress

Dress

There’s no better way to look chic while still staying cool than with a breezy summer dress. For the 4th of July, we found one that’s perfectly patriotic while still maintaining a ton of on-trend seasonal style. Show off your faux glow in this red, white and blue striped tie strap dress with a handkerchief hem and adjustable spaghetti straps .

box-cut tank

Cropped top

While this piece might be more heavy-handed in its patriotic inspiration than the others on our list, we still thought this box-cut tank featuring a faded American flag print was pretty cute . We love scoop necks and comfy deep-cut armholes. Pair with high waist denim shorts, oversize sunnies and wedge sandals for a get-noticed 4th of July look.

DSquared2 scarf

Scarf

Add some elegance to your 4th of July evening look with this chic raw silk lightweight DSquared2 scarf covered in a contrasting red and blue circular pattern . The simple yet stylish accessory is perfect for adding some interest and a splash of color to an otherwise neutral outfit. Wear with anything from your favorite LBD to a faded T-shirt and denim shorts.

red and white striped V-neck tee

Oversized tee

You can never have too many T-shirts, especially oversize, ultra-comfy ones that you can toss on and know you’ll feel great in. We’re particularly smitten with this red and white striped V-neck tee in an oversize, boxy cut . The loose fit and rounded hem that hangs lower at the back create a look that goes great with skinny denim. Add your favorite flats and a chic tote and you’re ready to celebrate the 4th of July in style.

Swimsuit

If you’re heading to any 4th of July beach parties this year, we have the perfect swimsuit for you. We’ve just added this one-piece star swimsuit to our must-buy list . It’s cute, flattering and offers a fun way to incorporate a patriotic vibe into your look all summer long.

Repêchage Hydra 4 Cleanser, $35.00 at repechage.comDon't forget to cleanse

Most women think moisturizing is the most important skin care step in the summer, but according to Shiri Sarfati, skin care expert and EVP of Repêchage, cleansing is. "If you don’t have a clean palate to work from, your skin won't reap the benefits of your serums and moisturizers. Your skin is exposed to daily debris, pollution, pigmented makeup, chemicals such as sunscreens and other impurities that seek refuge in your pores. It's important to properly cleanse daily to keep skin functioning at its best."

Good Morning Anti-Aging Beauty Nutrients, $30.00 at healthydirections.comProtect your skin with antioxidants

Certain powerful antioxidant plant compounds found in many fruits and vegetables have the ability to protect the skin from the adverse effects of UV radiation, says Dr. Aaron Tabor of HealthyDirections.com. "Such nutrients with known sun-protection benefits include lycopene, lutein, olive fruit extract and green tea extract. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables and drinking a cup or two of green tea daily will help you take in these vital nutrients that naturally protect your skin from the sun."

Money saving tip

"Unless you have the fortune of living in a place that's sunny year round, you probably go through several shades of foundation to wear throughout the year at different levels of tan. Invest in a good, clean powder in a neutral shade between your lightest and darkest foundations to ease the transition between, and avoid having to replace foundation every season." — Nicole Lapin, Financial Expert, Former CNBC/CNN Anchor, Recessionista.com Editor-in-Chief

You don't have to start all over to get glamorous evening skin, especially if you take good care of your skin throughout the rest of the day.

Day-to-night
summer skin tips

In the morning…

Oatmeal Exfoliating Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons oatmeal
  • 4 tablespoons sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Add water to make a paste.
  3. Apply the paste to your skin and gently rub it in for a few minutes.
  4. Rinse your skin and pat it dry.

Lay the groundwork for great skin that lasts all day.

Shower: Facing the day with fresh skin is your best start. Use a deodorant soap that will get you through the heat of the summer day.

Exfoliate: Your skin worked hard overnight to make new cells. Reward its efforts by sloughing off the old, dead skin cells to let the new ones shine through. Use a drugstore exfoliator or — even better — make one at home!

Vaseline® Total Moisture® body lotioMoisturize: When we're in a hurry, there's the temptation to skip this luxurious step. Change your paradigm so that you view moisturizing as a necessity, not a luxury. Whether you slather yourself with organic olive oil or use a store-bought moisturizer , your skin will thank you all day.

Philip B Blue Mist Skin-Cooling SprayDuring the day…

Whether you have a girls’ trip planned to somewhere tropical or live right next to the ocean at home, follow these need-to-know tips for looking sexy under the sun.

Woman with beach hair

Bio Supplements Ultra Straight Hair Masque, $26.00 at braziliansupplements.comProtect your tresses

Since salt strips the hair of products used in straightening and highlighting treatments, they won't last as long if you're constantly in the pool or the ocean, notes Fernanda Lacerda, owner of Maria Bonita Salon & Spa in New York City. "I like to coat my hair with Bio Supplements' Ultra Straight Hair Masque to prevent it from direct sun exposure and keep it smooth," she says. It seals in the moisture for frizz-free, silky, manageable strands every time.

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen, $45.50 at shop.janeiredale.comShield your skin

Any true beach babe knows that the number one rule to kicking it outdoors is to shield your skin. New York City-based double-board certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Tracy M. Pfeifer recommends wearing a physical sunblock of at least SPF 30 with titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. "Lotion forms need to be reapplied every two hours to get the stated SPF," she warns. "Powder forms, however, are a convenient way to touch up throughout the day and don't need to be reapplied as often."

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen, $46 at shop.janeiredale.com

Cricket Detangler Brush, $8.00 at amazon.com; Infusium 23 Repair & Renew Leave-In Treatment, $5.89 at ulta.comDetangle beach hair

Don’t let your messy beach hair drag you down. Instead, pack a chic detangler brush and leave-in conditioning spray to instantly unsnarl your tresses after going for a swim. The spray will help provide protection against the daily elements as well, whether the problem is salt water or overexposure to sun.

Cricket Detangler Brush, $8 at amazon.com; Infusium 23 Repair & Renew Leave-In Treatment, $6 at ulta.com

Style tip

Want to achieve boho beach waves at home? When your hair is wet, part it down the middle and distribute Jonathan Product Silky Dirt throughout for added texture, advises celebrity hair stylist Keith Campbell. "Put it in two braids , and let it dry. Take the braids out, but don't use a brush or comb, just gently rake your fingers through it." You'll have natural-looking beach waves without ever hitting the sand!

Lather Cucumber & Ginseng Facial Mist, $14.00 at lather.comKeep cool

In addition to hydrating , you'll also want to keep cool and beat the heat with a great post-makeup mist, preferably one infused with a drop of your favorite essential oil scent, recommends makeup artist and co-founder/CCO of Veil Cosmetics, Sebastien Tardif.

We love Lather's Cucumber & Ginseng Facial Mist, as it hydrates, tones and refreshes the skin, even underneath the blazing hot sun. Keep it on ice in the cooler for added refreshment.

Lather Cucumber & Ginseng Facial Mist, $14 at lather.com

Australian Gold Spray Gel With Instant Bronzer SPF 30, $6.39 at drugstore.comFake it ‘til you make it

Intensify your tan without worrying about sunburn. Erika Katz, beauty expert and author of Bonding Over Beauty, suggests getting a spray tan before you head to the beach. Then cozy up under a tent or umbrella with SPF to protect your skin, she says.

If you simply can't make it to the salon, however, try an SPF 30 sunscreen with instant bronzer. This will give you a healthy faux glow sans the sun.

Australian Gold Spray Gel with Instant Bronzer SPF 30, $6 at drugstore.com

Note

According to Dr. Aaron Tabor of HealthyDirections.com, women are most susceptible to sun damage the week prior to their period, so be sure to wear extra sunscreen and avoid harsh facial treatments during that time.
