House rules

Ah, Dec. 31! It’s the one night of the year you can go all out with your hair and makeup and rock something completely and totally over the top just because heck, you like it. But remember, even still, there are a few rules. We spoke with leading experts to break down the beauty dos and don’ts for New Year’s Eve every gal should know.

Do get a sexy blowout

Um seriously, you deserve it girl! Renowned stylist Greg Ruggeri of Salon Ruggeri in NYC recommends getting a blowout around 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. "Have your stylist pin your hair in large victory rolls around your head, and make sure you leave them in until you’re ready to go,” he says. "Then, simply take them out and shake your head to give hair that ‘sex-kitten’ feel. Finally, dust Evo’s Haze Styling Powder on to ensure that blowout lasts into the wee hours of the morning.”

Don’t use glitter hair spray…

Or attempt to bling out your hair and face with matching rhinestones! According to celebrity hairstylist Darico Jackson, it’s way too much . "You’ll look like a child trying to play dress up.”

waterDo stick to clear drinks, and munch on veggies

Essentially, anything that will stain your clothing will stain your teeth, explains Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. Arthur Glosman. "Snack on veggies, like celery and carrots, which will naturally cleanse and lighten your teeth, and opt for white wine, Champagne, water and other clear drinks,” he advises. "You can also rub a lemon peel across your front teeth to produce a brightening effect.”

Don’t be a lazy, last-minute girl

Waiting until the last minute to plan your look is never a good idea, says celebrity stylist Allen Edwards. "As a hairdresser, I know to expect the unexpected: a horrible hair day, that strand that won't straighten or running out of bobby pins! Prepare the night before so you're not scrambling 20 minutes prior to the time you’re supposed to leave.”

Do take care of your nails

Take this opportunity to make your New Year’s resolution about your nails, suggests Jenna Hipp, celebrity manicurist and founder of Nailing Hollywood. “A small effort can reward drastic improvements, and believe it or not, beauty products aren’t necessarily the solution. The answer lies with you, your determination and willpower. No more biting, no more picking, no more irregular manicures. It's time for you to take care of you.” We couldn’t agree more!

Don’t enjoy a cocktail whose ingredient list sounds a lot like a candy bar

Or at least not too many anyway... “Drinks mixed with sugar, carbonation or worse, caffeine, wreak havoc on your skin and your health in general,” says Melissa Picoli, esthetician and founder of BijaBody health + beauty. “They can also get you feeling tipsy earlier, which leads to you looking like a mess, and not a hot one . Be smart about it.”

compact mirrorDo pack a mirror and supplies for touchups

Keep in mind that New Year’s is a marathon, not a sprint, says seasoned hairstylist and makeup artist Julia Papworth. “You’ll want to reapply your lipstick and touch up your hair throughout the night. However, it’s not necessary to pack your entire bathroom. A light powder and a lip color should be enough to get you by until the ball drops.”

Don’t let oily shine ruin your fab photos

You’ll have these images for years to come , so be sure to use a self-setting powder foundation on the hotspots of your face, such as the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin, especially if you have an oily complexion already, warns Aussie makeup maestro Napoleon Perdis. “My Camera Finish Powder Foundation boasts phenomenal coverage and anti-aging ingredients. It can be worn as a light base, layered for a medium coverage or just as a setting powder over a liquid foundation.”

Survive closet clean-out craziness

An organized closet means always being able to find what you need. Easier said than done. Attempting to clean out anyone’s closet can be so overwhelming that you put it off for years.

Cleaning out your closet doesn't have to be stressful — you just have to know where to start. Here are some simple ways to get organized and tips for knowing what to keep and what to toss.

Change your hangers, change your life

1

slim velvet hangers that you can buy at Bed, Bath, and Beyond

When your hangers are all the exact same, your closet will look like a boutique. I am a fan of the slim hangers that you can buy at Bed Bath and Beyond. If you want to get super crazy, you can color coordinate the hangers for each section in your closet . Try to avoid double hanging items — each garment should have its own hanger.

2

You can even hang your belts and scarves. Get extra-large safety pins and attach them to the bottom of a velvet pants hanger. This will look very organized and you’ll be able to see everything you have!

3

If you’re attempting to organize your man’s closet, I like a dark wood slim hanger for the guys. Be sure to get separate shirt and pants hangers because no shirt should ever be clipped on a pants hanger.

Garbage bags are your best friend

1

Start this daunting task of closet clean-out craziness by arming yourself with the biggest, sturdiest size garbage bag you can find. I like the outdoor garden leaf bags because they are bigger than normal. Grab a Post-it, Sharpie and a safety pin, and label each bag “keep,” “donate,” “sell,” “alter” and “toss.” Every single item in your closet falls into one of these categories and the rule is, if you haven’t worn an item in a year, you’re not going to. It’s just plain fact!

2

I like to use something called “the reach test,” which is to ask yourself if you reach for this first. If the answer is no, you’re probably not going to reach for it tomorrow, or the next day, or in three months.

3

Don’t keep something in your closet just because it has sentimental value to you. You’ll wind up with a closet full of stuff you’ll never wear. If it’s that important to you, store it in a keepsake box under your bed or take a picture of it for your photo book and then toss it!

If you don't have drawer organizers, you need some

1

Linen Drawer Organizers from the Container Store

A drawer without an organizer is just a big pile of socks, underwear or accessories. I like the Linen Drawer Organizers from the Container Store. But for anything that can be hung, hang it rather than folding it.

2

Your sweaters should all be hung — they just need to be hung properly. Fold them in half and drape them over the bottom of your velvet pants hanger. This is better for the sweater.

Shoes, shoes, shoes

1

Shoes are always the wild card that usually end up in a pile on the floor. If you have the room for a hanging shoe organizer or a back-of-the-door shoe organizer, get one! But if you have overflow, a simple solution is to rubber band your shoes or put them in extra-large Ziploc bags so they stay in pairs, and neatly store them in a wicker basket or laundry bin.

2

The most important thing is that all your shoes are in the same spot and that you really evaluate which shoes you’re going to wear and which shoes you’re holding on to because you think one day you’ll wear them. Likewise, if they are shoes that are so worn out that the soles are gone or you can see your feet, it’s time to let go.

3

If you want to simplify your shoe life, keep only these basics: a flip flop, a flat, a wedge, a going out heel, a work heel and a special occasion heel, a boot and a sneaker. Anything above that is just extra. So if you’ve got the room, keep them. If not, go back to the basics!

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Demi Lovato and Kelly Osbourne

Demi Lovato and Kelly Osbourne's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Demi Lovato VH1 Divas

Demi Lovato

We're big fans of Demi Lovato here at SheKnows and love watching her on The X Factor every week! The singing star took part in VH1's Divas Concert last week and showed up rocking an ensemble so fab, I just had to give it a shout out.

Demi always seems to take cool eclectic pieces and give them a girly twist, and that's exactly what she did with this dazzling LBD! Everything from the flowy skirt and delicate material to the embellished sleeves and sheer detail take this LBD up a notch to a level that makes me totally jealous. In true Demi fashion, she paired her darling LBD with gorgeous shiny locks and glowing makeup.

The final verdict? Diva done well! Demi looks sweet and sexy and shines like the star she is.

Kelly Osbourne VH1 Divas

Kelly Osbourne

As a star of Fashion PoliceKelly Osbourne calls out fashion faux pas on a weekly basis, but we're calling her out on her fab little white dress today! Like Demi, Kelly rocked this gorgeous number at the VH1 Divas concert last week.

Can I just say that Kelly is looking fab? After she lost all that weight she's been rocking some seriously cute fashions and it's so fun to watch. The silhouette of this fit and flare dress is perfect for Kelly's shape and I love a gal who defies the "don't wear white after Labor Day" rule!

The final verdict? The look could do without the fluffy pom poms on her zebra pumps, but overall Kelly looks stunning and so happy!

Miranda Lambert's updo hairstyle

WE'RE OBSESSED!

We have a total crush on Miranda Lambert's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

She might've made our Fashion Fails for the outfit she wore in this picture, but Miranda Lambert is most definitely redeeming herself with her chic updo! The country crooner rocked the darling look at this month's American Country Awards, and we think it deserves an award of its own.

Mrs. Blake Shelton paired her cute topknot with face-framing fringe and lots of shine for a look that complemented her statement-making LBD. Adorable, no?

Miranda's adorbs topknot works for the red carpet but it'd also go well with a casual ensemble, so don't be afraid to rock it on your own!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Demi Lovato and Uma Thurman

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Demi Lovato and Uma Thurman's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato

Somehow she managed to make it on our best dressed and our worst dressed list this week.

It's the X-Factor season finale and poor judge Demi Lovato must have run out of clothes to wear. Why else would the girl who usually picks bright prints and colors wear an all-black ensemble for the LA finale party of her hit show?

Don't get us wrong; this outfit isn't a total disaster. It's just that the black on black on black is boring for someone like Demi, who has such a whimsical, fun style. The black jeans are fine, but open-toed sandals in then middle of winter seem off-season.

Then there's the super baggy blouse she's wearing. She's swimming in material and we think adding a belt would have showed off her waistline and given her more shape. Demi topped off her outfit with a tuxedo blazer, which was also blah black.

The final verdict? There's nothing awful about this look, but we know she can do so much better! We love to see Demi in color, not dressed like an Olsen twin headed on a coffee run in NYC.

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman

Here we have Uma Thurman, yet another victim of the head-to-toe dull color doldrums. She wore an all grey suit to the 10th Annual Tibet House Charity Auction, and while menswear is a huge trend for ladies right now, this ensemble misses the mark for a few reasons.

First of all, it's all the same drab color. The one shade of grey isn't doing it for us. Take a style tip from Blake Lively, who wore a bright red suit this summer and looked absolutely stunning. Color is your friend! If you don't want to wear an eye-popping shade for your suit, at least choose a vivid camisole to change it up.

The cut of this suit is also odd. If it was properly tailored at the waist, we could see hot mom Uma's amazing post baby body, but it looks shapeless. The pants look uncomfortably tight in the crotch and it seems like the actress is on the risk of coming down with a case of camel toe. And the bell bottom cut of the legs seem off, too. We'd prefer a skinny leg instead.

The final verdict? When trying a menswear inspired suit, remember the two C's: cut and color. And we love to see suits with heels, not flats, like Uma chose.

This winter season, wear vintage in a hot, new way. Bring classic and vintage style to your wardrobe with these helpful tips. Whether you love wearing a hint of vintage or a huge splash, these tips will help you out!

teal peplum dress

Add a peplum

For a smart look, peplum dresses are the most adaptable and body gratifying garment a woman can wear. Straight from the glamour of the '50s, this type of dress will flatter your waist for a sophisticated and beautiful look.

N.Peal Black cashmere gloves

Long gloves

Among the vintage accessories of this season, a great revival is going on with long-length gloves, scarves and retro jewelry. The so-called Opera gloves, about 22 inches long, are the ultimate sexy item for your '20s or '50s look. Resemble the glamorous time of Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo with long satin chic gloves — add a pastel scarf to a simple outfit and your vintage look will be perfect.

Pink Chiffon Flower Corsage

All that glitters

Brooches and pin jewelry work really well over pretty much anything, providing a comfortable and elegant look that adds some glamour over your outfit. From Victorian to pop-culture and from art nouveau to art deco and Egyptian or African and cubism style: gold, silver, plastic, stones, wood and pearls are the great accessories that complement your winter satin and pastel colors. A delicate dash of color can totally add sparkle to any plain winter piece of clothing and the easiest way to pull this off is with simple, fresh and shiny accessories. Experiment and have fun in creating contrast! If you don’t feel comfortable with sparkling items, just add a splash of soft red lipstick for an eternal eye-catching look.

70s style floppy hat

Hat hair

Hats are also a prevailing item this year, as seen on all the fashion weeks! Stay warm and stylish with a cloche hat, suitable for every occasion, or a '70s floppy hat which fits very well with long or short gloves and a retro winter coat. It is a fantastic look for exciting occasions.

Note: If a bargain is what you are looking for, stroll around thrift and vintage shops and markets where you can find unforgettable pieces from the most unforgettable and fashionable eras of the 20th century.

You found the perfect New Year’s dress, your hair is recently colored, your nails recently done. You are all set to usher in the New Year looking and feeling fabulous. But what about your smacker? Woman with puckered lips

You found the perfect New Year’s dress, your hair is recently colored, your nails recently done. You are all set to usher in the New Year looking and feeling fabulous. But what about your smacker?

Make it a
New Year's to remember

It’s winter! Are those lips ready for a New Year’s kiss you won’t soon forget?
Probably not. Let’s fix that…

Lip therapy

Lip repair

All that cold air combined with heated air blowing on you in your home or car dries your lips out until they resemble lizard skin. That’s not really the look we’re going for. The first step to get your smacker in shape is to fix it! Try a lip repair like First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Lip Therapy . This first aid kit for your lips will restore moisture and protect your lips from the elements.

Burt bees Lip balm

Lip maintenance

Now that your pout is in better shape, let’s keep it that way. You’re probably going to eat light and exercise to look your best in that cocktail dress — you have to apply that same attitude to your lips. Before New Year’s, maintain your repaired mouth with Burt’s Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm . As the name suggests, this contains pomegranate oil, an antioxidant. Not only will it hydrate your lips, it is also alcohol free and 100 percent natural.

Mary Kay lip mask

Lip mask

As you’re getting ready on New Year’s Eve, make sure your kisser is in its softest shape by using a lip mask. If you’ve not tried one of these, you are missing out. As much fun as it is to bite those little pieces of skin off your lips , a lip mask exfoliates them for you! Smooth on Mary Kay Satin Lips Lip Mask , and scrub off with a washcloth. Bye-bye lip funk.

L'Oreal Collagen filler

Lip plumper

The Big Guy Upstairs wasn’t overly generous to some of us when it came to the perfectly plump pucker. But thanks to a makeup industry that has something to counteract all our genetic flaws, we now have lip plumper . Test this a few days prior to New Year's to make sure you’re not allergic to it or that it doesn’t work too well. The idea is to plump up your lips a bit, but without making you look like you walked into a wall several times.

Urban Decay lip primer

Lip concealer

If you are one of those lucky gals who struggle with lipstick turning orange once it’s applied, you are not alone. You bring home a beautiful shade from the drug store, put it on and end up looking like Aunt Maude. While it’s unclear why this happens , there is an answer. Applying lip concealer like this one from Urban Decay helps the color of your lipstick stay true. It also will make your color last longer which, on New Year’s Eve, is a must!

Cover girl lip liner

Lip liner

Now that your lips are to “dye” for, let’s get to the fun part of all this lip business. Lip liners like this one from Cover Girl are a great way to get the perfect pucker. Some apply lip liner before lipstick, some apply it after to rope lipstick in. It doesn’t matter much — just make sure you press your lips together when you’re done applying everything to blend the line. Lip liner that is not blended puts you on the same playing field as Courtney Stodden, which may leave you making out with the couch pillow at midnight. Try blending your lipstick and lip liner with…

Elf lip brush

Lip brush

If you like to play makeup artist at home, a lip brush is a must have. Not only does it help to blend lip liner and lipstick, but you can swipe it across your lipstick and apply lip color that way. This alleviates all those funky angles on your lipstick, but more importantly, it can help you blend colors! Take a few swipes from a deep shade of lipstick, a swipe or two from a lighter shade and presto! You’ve just created a lip color that is perfect for you.

Bobbi brown lip gloss

Lip gloss

Nothing says, “Plant ‘er there baby,” like a glossy pout. You can add clear gloss to your favorite lip color, buy color glosses or wear a clear, shiny gloss all by itself. There really is no wrong way to wear lip gloss, other than too much. You want to look as if you have just wet your lips, which is sexy, not like you’ve been attacked by a tub of Vaseline, which is not sexy.

Clinique Almost lipstick

Lipstick

Clinique’s Almost Lipstick, $15, is the perfect choice for gals who aren’t comfortable with the look or feel of regular lipstick. This product is pigmented but transparent, so it sort of blends with your natural lip color without being heavy.

Viva Glam Nicki Lipstick

More lipstick

There are almost as many choices in lipstick as there are lips! Experimenting can be fun, but it can also be frustrating. If you have a knack for picking out drugstore lipsticks that work for you, go with that. If you keep buying shades that you can’t try on first only to get them home and find that you don’t like them, it’s time to call in the professionals. Any cosmetic guru at a department store can help you find a formula you’ll love. Now you're ready for a New Year’s kiss that will start your New Year right!

DIY exfoliating cornmeal and buttermilk facial scrub

Tried and true for a reason, cornmeal and buttermilk are two ingredients that combine for an exfoliating, DIY facial scrub.

DIY Cornmeal and Buttermilk Facial Scrub

Gentle exfoliation can definitely be a good thing for your skin. It removes dead, dry skin cells to help even out your skin tone . Once the dry skin is gone, you’ll have an easier time moisturizing the new skin cells that you uncover, and allow your skin to glow. It only takes a few ingredients to whip up the perfect at-home facial scrub.

Instead of sugar, like you might use for a body scrub, this recipe incorporates cornmeal to help with exfoliation. Use the finely ground type of cornmeal to help keep from scratching or aggravating your skin.

The buttermilk contains lactic acid - which also helps with gentle exfoliation and to tighten pores - and the fat in the buttermilk helps hydrate your skin.

DIY cornmeal and buttermilk facial scrub

Before applying the scrub to your face, first test it on your inner arm, where you skin is more sensitive, to help ensure you can tolerate the ingredients. Don’t forget to first wash your face to remove any dirt or makeup. You might have a little of this scrub left over — use on your elbows or knees in the shower!

DIY Cornmeal and Buttermilk Facial Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons finely ground cornmeal
  • 3 tablespoons buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Use a spoon to mix the ingredients in a small bowl to form a paste, and then let it stand for a few minutes.
  2. Pull your hair away from your face and place a warm, damp washcloth on your face for a moment.
  3. Gently massage the scrub onto your skin in a circular motion for a few minutes, and then rinse it with warm water and pat dry.

Two simple ingredients are all it takes to make an old-fashioned, DIY facial scrub.

Should I shampoo every day?

We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Master stylist Nick Arrojo is telling us whether we should let our hair get dirty or not.

Your question

Is it true that letting your hair get oily is good for it? And how do you suggest styling hair to not look dirty?

Nick's answer!

So many people obsess about shampooing their hair every day. They get freaked out because they think anything less will result in dirty, smelly hair that doesn’t look nice and clean. It’s a nice thought, and we encourage everyone to have hygienically clean hair, but shampooing three or four times weekly is plenty — only shampoo every day if you have to have that fresh scent of just cleansed hair.

One to three days of unwashed hair will result in the build-up of natural sebum oils from your scalp. Too much of those oils can leave your hair feeling greasy, but the right amount can leave your hair with a nice easy-to-manage texture for you to play with. If you’re comfortable with natural oils, try this and see how it works for you. Just remember to brush or quickly blow out your unwashed hair in the morning to distribute the oils and shape and define your style. And don’t use too much product because it will only increase the dirt. Instead, see how you can create individual style with your own lived-in natural texture.

If you are going to use product on non-wet, shampooed hair, make it ARROJO refinish dry shampoo. A miracle style rescue, it cleans hair without water, soaks up excess oils and creates instant texture and volume with a nice soft sheen. It keeps hair textured and lived-in — without ever looking dirty.

If we want to rise through the ranks and be seen as “the boss,” it’s time we stop dressing like the person who gets her coffee! As we begin the new year at work, many of us need to focus not only on what we can achieve professionally, but how we want to be perceived professionally.
What does your outfit say about you?
How to dress for success

secrets to dress for success

If we want to rise through the ranks and be seen as “the boss,” it’s time we stop dressing like the person who gets her coffee! As we begin a new year at work, many of us need to focus not only on what we can achieve professionally, but how we want to be perceived professionally.

With goals, deadlines and targets to reach, it’s easy to become so engrossed in the doing of the job that we forget the importance of correctly dressing for the job. It's important not to overlook that, ultimately, you are the most important part of every presentation you make.

Whether we like it or not, how we dress every single day, from first interview to key client meetings, sends a very clear message about who we are, how we view ourselves and how seriously we take the job we’re doing.

Power dressing and what it used to be

“Seldom do people discern eloquence under a threadbare cloak.” - Juvenal

A lot of people have negative associations with power dressing, thinking of those silly 80s oversized shoulder pads that made us look more like quarterbacks than qualified professionals. Like any woman who is proud to be so, I too find the concept of dressing like a man in order to feel like a powerful woman detrimental to the cause.

But before you burn your briefcase along with your bra, think about how some of the most powerful and inspiring women of our time use fashion as an extension of their personal brand.

“Fashion is a powerful weapon that can be used by you, or against you. The choice is yours.”-  Kathryn Eisman

They understand that these days power dressing is a metaphor for a woman’s ability to use her clothing to create an image that helps advance her career and cause. Fashion is one of her many tools.

Take Hillary Clinton’s sturdy red, white and blue suits for example. Or Michelle Obama’s optimistic all-American frocks. Look at Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer’s game-changing couture or even Mother Teresa’s humble servant-of-God threads. Check out Beyoncé’s superstar, spotlight-stealing get-ups or Queen Elizabeth’s comforting, conservative and regal twinsets. Each of these women successfully uses clothing to carve out the unique image of who they are and what they stand for.

So if the image you want to portray in 2013 is that you have what it takes to be “the boss,” these are the clothes you need in your wardrobe… as well as some you need to avoid!

Dressing like an alpha woman must-haves

The Modern Blazer

What it says: “I’m the captain of this ship.”

modern yellow blazer

Why: It’s no accident that every military uniform in the world features blazers with square shoulders. Square shoulders are a subconscious symbol of power and authority. But to avoid falling into that quarterback trap of decades past, the new power jacket features a far more narrow, longer and leaner silhouette. Instead of a boxy shape, opt for a blazer that falls in a more relaxed way along the body. And skip the buttons in favor of a minimalistic look. Wear it over a dress or with pants and a shirt.

Avoid: Cardigans may be comfy, but the sweet and demure rounded shoulders and delicate buttons are still seen as the stuff of secretaries, not the women in charge.

The White Blouse

What it says: “I’m a clear thinker.”

white blouse for the alpha woman

Why: Psychologically, white is calming and is associated with simplicity, organization and efficiency. It is the color associated with equality, and fairness. It's a great color to begin the new year with, as it symbolizes a fresh start. Buy this blouse here.

Fun fact: Historically white shirts where worn exclusively by bosses, while blue was worn by the employees, hence the “white collar” and “blue collar” terms.

Avoid: Anything too sheer that allows your colleagues to see a glimpse of your bra, or any button-down shirt that’s too tight across the bust and risks exposing you mid-meeting!

The Sheath Dress

What it says: “I’m professional and dependable.”

sheath dress for the professional woman

A favorite of many well-known women, including the Duchess of Cambridge to Carla Bruni, the knee-length, semi-form-fitting sheath dress is a must-have in any powerful woman’s wardrobe.

Why: The clean lines speak to your strategic thinking. The modest hemline means you’ll never be the stuff of water-cooler fodder, and the tailored silhouette says you’re a woman and not trying to hide it. Opt for a single color that has a flattering, elongating effect and add a statement necklace or cuff for an extra pop.

Avoid: Any hemline more than 2 inches above your knees. No matter how great your set of pins, you want people focused on your work, not on your leg workouts. Never give your colleagues material that they can use to undermine your competence. You’re a career woman, not a sex symbol.

Anything Red

What it says: “I’m powerful and confident.”

red suit for the alpha woman

Fashion designer Bill Blass once said, “When in doubt, wear red.” How right he was! Red has always been the color most closely associated with power and confidence. In France during Louis VIV’s reign, red-soled heels where allowed to be worn only by those in favor of the king. Today, wearing exclusive red-soled heels is no less a status symbol, a fact that has made Christian Louboutin a very rich man!

Why: Research has shown that colors can greatly affect our moods and the way other people respond to us. Energetically, red is the color of passion and action. At once warm, strong, energizing and motivating, red signifies a pioneering sense, ambition and determination. It can also give confidence to those who are shy or lacking in will power.

Avoid: Too much yellow. While it is the happiest of all colors, it is also perceived as unstable and can make the wearer appear weak or indecisive. Similarly, grey is associated with low energy and passivity. If you do wear grey, be sure to offset the negative effect by pairing it with brighter colors.

The Accessories

The Power Bag

What it says: “I’m organized.”

DVF bag for the alpha woman

A structured bag in a dark color is a great substitute for the briefcase and shows that you are organized, armed and prepared for anything. You needn’t spend a fortune on a designer bag , and should avoid any garish label or gold details, which can alienate people or over-shadow your personal brand.

Avoid: Any slouchy bag or massively oversized tote conveys a lack of discipline and organization. If it takes you ten minutes to find your car keys, do you really have what it takes to be a leader?

The Mid-Height, Closed-Toe Shoe

What it says: “I take care of things.”

Professional pumps

From army generals to would-be suitors, having a pair of polished, well-maintained shoes is associated with someone who takes pride in themselves and knows how to look after things. For example, the company they work for.

Avoid: Open-toe shoes, stripper-inspired platforms or anything scruffy. Remember, wearing an old pair of shoes will ultimately cost you more than the price of a new pair.

Bonus tip

When it comes to jewelry, avoid anything that makes more noise in the meeting than you do! While wearing dangly earrings may be a fun on a Saturday night, did you know that in the early 20th century, dangly earrings were associated with a woman being of “dubious character”? Today, the safest bet is a simple, clean stud.

In today’s competitive work world, smarts will only get you so far. It’s that rare combination of brains and beauty, though, that can truly send your career soaring. You have to look and act the part. Thus, for the Alpha Woman who wants it all, appearance couldn't be more vital.

We reached out to renowned hairstylists and beauty experts to learn how your mane can either help your career or hurt it!

Keep it simple

"As women, we’re not just recognized for our work and how well we can write a report or complete a balance sheet, but we’re viewed, and often even judged, by our looks. Don’t stand out for them, other than to appear professional, clean, neat and well put together. Your hair shouldn’t be too short, funky, spiky or excessively long and filled with extensions, especially as you get older. Clearly, rock stars and celebrities can have some leeway on the latter rules, but in general, simple is best.” — Lucy Segal, health, beauty and lifestyle expert

Rock a classic bob

"Powerful women in the workplace are also typically very busy women, multi-tasking many duties at once. This, however, is no excuse for not taking the time to look your finest. Having a neat and well-coiffed appearance will exude confidence and importance on the job. Classic bob shapes are excellent for all ages and frame the face while simultaneously coming off as polished and professional.” —Sherri Jessee, seasoned hair and makeup artist

Try a French twist

"Shiny, controlled hair denotes success. If you want to pull it back, do a traditional French twist or a chignon, but be cognizant that there are no flyaways or frizz. It’s imperative to keep texture to a minimum. Hair should be smooth and soft. To create this look, you can use a flatiron to get rid of unwanted volume, and apply Wella SP Satin Polish Cream or Halo Mist by Sebastian — both will leave your hair with a reflective sheen." — Claudio Lazo, celebrity hairstylist and owner of C The Salon in Studio City

Tailor it

Hair inspiration: Check out our photo gallery of work appropriate hairstyles!

"In my opinion, successful women always exude confidence. And with that being said, most females with very well-defined, tailored, structured and serious hairstyles excel at what they do." — DaRico Jackson, celebrity hairstylist

Get noticed with a new ‘do

"Most people attempt to fit into the basic culture that has already been established when they take a job, and to some extent, your hairstyle can either work for or against you in that regard. I do think it's important to feel authentic, and not phony though. How you wear your hair can be a liberating way to express yourself. Usually, it's the execution of your cut that counts. Keep your hair clean and healthy, get regular trims and stay current! If you haven't expressed your personality through your hair in a new style for years on end, consider shaking things up a bit. After all, a new hairstyle gets you noticed, especially at work!"— Andre Walker, Creative Director of Andre Walker Hair, LLC, and seven-time Emmy-Award winning stylist to Oprah Winfrey

What does your hairstyle say about your personality?

We asked Scott Fontana, expert stylist and owner of Cristophe Salon Newport Beach, to share his thoughts:

short hair

Short hair says you are a very strong personality. You’re a go-getter, you don’t fool around and you get the job done.

Long hair worn wavy/curly

Long hair worn wavy/curly says you are a very fun person who likes to go out for a drink after work.

Long, straight hair

Long, straight hair says you’re serious, but you still like to have a good time.

Flawless hair,

Flawless hair, meaning every single strand is in place, says you’re a perfectionist — everything has to be just right.

What does your hair color say about your personality?

Nicole Hartman, hairstylist and colorist at Prive Salon in Los Angeles, says that while your hair isn’t a correct indicator of your personality, society has stereotyped certain shades. Here’s her take on blondes, brunettes and redheads:

Blonde

Blondes clearly have more fun! I actually believe that blondes are getting a more serious rep. Hillary Clinton is a blonde in a position of power and being taken very seriously. The super model Agyness Deyn couldn't book a single job when she went dark for a short period of time. Blondes are on the way to becoming the new brunettes.

Brunette

Brunettes are usually viewed as more conservative and introverted, but they are getting the job done.

Redhead

Redheads are seen as strong, passionate and goal oriented. Most women actually say that if they could change their hair color for one day, it would be red. I believe that most women look great in red hair. The trick is just to choose the right shade that complements your skin color.

Hairstyles you should never rock to work

Do ditch these ‘dos for the office, says Hartman!

  • Super styled hair
  • The “Bump It”
  • Bad extensions to hide short hair, or extensions that show. If your hair is too short to put in extensions, listen to your hairdresser and don't do it. Rock short hair — it shows confidence!
  • Crimped hair
  • Unwashed, don't-care kind of hair
  • Grown out hair color

Makeup for an alpha woman
Makeup tips for the career woman

Turns out, whether you’re vying for that big promotion at work or just want your colleagues to start taking you more seriously, the way you do your makeup actually matters.

Power player

We asked top beauty experts to break down what certain looks communicate to the world.

Trendy makeup

"Remember: Unless you work in a very creative field or in fashion/beauty, anything overly trendy or young — glitter, sparkle, of-the-moment shades, false eyelashes, super shiny lip gloss, etc. — can be distracting and perceived as too junior."– Melissa Silver, Maybelline New York makeup artist

"If you wear trendy, wild makeup colors you won’t be taken seriously. As we age — especially — sparkles, shine and shimmer settle into our wrinkles more. You are smart and beautiful — let that show inside and out."– Lucy Segal, health, beauty and lifestyle expert

Bad brows

"Your eyebrows are one of the most expressive features on your face and can speak volumes about you. For example, well-groomed, full eyebrows give off a more polished, confident look, while a slightly angular brow shape makes you appear more commanding and in charge. A rounder brow signifies a soft, approachable nature." – Pamela Jeschonek, licensed esthetician, makeup artist and founder of EyebrowMBA

brow tip

To draw attention to your eyes, fill in your brows with a pencil or a powder. This will help hold the attention of those you’re engaged with in meetings and face-to-face presentations, says Jeschonek.

Facial scars

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that people with facial lesions, including scars and birthmarks, fared worse in job interviews. “Candidates’ facial disfigurements were distracting to interviewers, who subsequently could not recall as much information on the candidate and gave them poorer ratings. Thus, wearing makeup to cover imperfections could significantly impact evaluation of your performance in the workplace,” states Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.

What your color choices say about you

Seasoned hair and makeup artist Sherri Jessee shares her thoughts on three popular hues.

What wearing red lipstick says about you

Red means energy…

In color psychology, red means energy, passion, action, strength and excitement. Choose red lips when you want to show power and passion for your position. A great trick is to blot several times on a tissue to remove excess color. This will diffuse the brightness of the shade and prevent the dreaded lipstick on the teeth situation.

What blue eye makeup says about you

Blue relates to trust...

Blue is the most universally favored color. It relates to trust, honesty and dependability, therefore helping to build customer loyalty. Blue can be a terrific accent shade for all colors of eyes. Use a flat brush, and smudge in close to your lash line on the top and bottom for a flash of color. Don’t do a frosty, blue shadow all over, though.

What pink blush conveys about your personality

Pink conveys youth...

Pink is feminine and youthful in its softer shades, with more passion and energy in its deeper shades. This is one color to avoid, as the impression of youth and innocence may take away from your power. It is important to not look ghostly, so opt for more neutral shades when choosing your blush color so as to not over-do the pink.

30-something Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City was a fashion icon for millions of women in the last decade. She sported on-trend styles of the late '90s and early '00s that were, by and large, attractive and alluring. The teenage Carrie Bradshaw of the upcoming '80s-era CW show, The Carrie Diaries, will likewise showcase the latest fashion trends, thanks to the recent resurrection of '80s styles.

For good or bad, it's time to welcome back the hottest trends of the 1980s. Hold on to your shoulder pads.

1

Miniskirts

Mini skirt with express

Frankly, the miniskirt should remain in fashion for as long as women have legs, because it remains surprisingly versatile and sexy. But you don't have to wear an acid-washed version to bring the fashion back to life. You can dress up a miniskirt with a sequined top and high heels, or dress it down with a sweater, leggings and boots. The key is to find a length that makes onlookers think, "Wow, she's hot," rather than, "Wow, she's a total train wreck." A micro miniskirt — one that barely covers your assets — is seldom a good idea. Try to find a skirt that falls just above your fingertips when your arms are at your sides. We like Express miniskirts for their versatility.

2

Oversized tops

Oversized top from Victoria Secret

An oversized top doesn't have to make you look like you've given up on life. The main trick to update this '80s staple is to avoid Day-Glo prints and scrunchie tie-backs. But... bonus! A well-designed oversized top can be both sexy and extremely comfortable. Pair an oversized top in a sheer or thin fabric with dark-wash jeans for a stylish update to this retro look. Victoria's Secret has a great selection of oversized tops, including the one featured here.

3

Lingerie outerwear

White House|Black Market corset top

Lingerie as outerwear may sound like a very poor idea, circa Madonna's "Like a Virgin" music video. And really, it is — unless you know how to tastefully incorporate a splash of sensual underwear into your evening outerwear. This does not mean you should yank your thong out for the world to see. Instead, find a lingerie-inspired corset that can double as a shirt. You can layer it underneath a blazer, or wear it by itself with a fitted pencil skirt. White House|Black Market has this featured tasteful corset top that we like.

4

Shoulder pads

Dress with shoulder pads from ModCloth

Bigger is not better when it comes to shoulder pads. But shoulder pads are actually kind of great when they are used in moderation. They can provide structure to a dress or jacket, which truly refines an outfit for work or play. Moreover, a demure shoulder pad can also balance out your shape if you are concerned about the size of your lower body. Just ask Kim Kardashian. Modcloth has a variety of dresses and blazers that feature shoulder pads.

5

Metallics

A metallic addition to your wardrobe will provide a touch of glamour and fun to your outfits. The trick is to not wear more than one metallic at a time, and to pair the metallic piece with a neutral. If you're a little nervous about wearing a gold or silver shirt, you can start small with a fun metallic nail polish or eye shadow. Bobbi Brown has a great selection of metallic eyeshadows and polishes available online at Sephora.

Good girl gone bad nail polish

Good Girl Gone Bad

For those days you just feel like being a little naughty instead of nice, we suggest this aptly named polish that has a vampy side . The deep, shimmery purple is perfect for attracting attention and embracing your bad girl side.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s no denying the fact that these four controversial reality stars have made quite a name for themselves in Hollywood. The one thing that ties them all together is, unfortunately, their not so flattering makeup. That’s why we decided it’s about time we called in the help of a few experts. Because truth be told, they’re pretty girls, but a change or two is definitely necessary.
1

Amber Portwood of Teen Mom

Amber Portwood of Teen Mom

Brows: According to celebrity makeup artist LeAura Luciano, Amber’s biggest issue is her brows. "They’re way over-plucked, the shape is wrong for her face and they’re too thin,” she notes. "I would advise she use some eyebrow rejuvenation and growth serums and put away her tweezers for at least six weeks!” In the meantime though, makeup artist to the stars and founder of Skinn Cosmetics Dimitri James suggests filling them in.

Eyes:"Amber has pretty blue eyes, but they’re small, so the last thing she’d want to do is line them with thick, black eyeliner, which only makes them appear smaller,” says Luciano. "I’d recommend a bronzed brown liner just on top and finishing off with mascara.”

Face:"Her concealer is too light and needs a coat of blush or bronzer swept over it so that it blends in better with the rest of her face,” points out James. "I would warm her up with a dusting of bronzer all over, which would really bring out her blue eyes.”

2

Snooki of Jersey Shore

Snooki of Jersey Shore

Eyes:“Snooki has certainly come a long way and her look really is her own, so I wouldn’t want to lose her personality,” reveals Physicians Formula’s celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip. “However, she is one of those girls who looks amazing with less makeup, so if she was in my chair, I’d tone down the eye and lighten her brow, but I’d keep the lashes.”

Lips:“I know Snooki likes strong lip colors, such as hot pink and red, but if she’s going to rock a bold pout, I’d advise easing up on the rest of her face and keeping things soft,” says seasoned makeup artist Felicia Alva. In other words, less bronzer and definitely less eye makeup!

Cheeks:“Believe it or not, because Snooki has obviously gone for a very dramatic and theatrical look, she’s done over the top well, without crossing over into the campy drag look,” explains James. One thing he would ditch though is that shimmery blush.

3

Courtney Stodden of Couples Therapy

Courtney Stodden of Couples Therapy

Eyes:"Courtney tends to gravitate toward dark, smoky eyeshadow, heavy liner and lots of lashes,” says celebrity makeup artist Julia Papworth. "While this look can work on her, more natural eyes would really brighten up her young face.” Agreed!

Lips:"She often wears a bright pink or a frosty lip color,” divulges Papworth, "While pretty, I think a neutral-toned pout would give Courtney a much more polished look. My favorite neutral lipstick is Smashbox Be Legendary in Nylon Nude. After applying, finish off with Nars Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Spring Break.”

Skin:"It looks like Courtney spray tans, which is definitely a healthy way to get a glow,” notes Schlip. "However, there is a strong contrast between her skin and hair color, so I would recommend toning down one or the other for a softer effect. I’d also reduce the amount of shimmer on her skin.”

4

Coco Austin of Ice Loves Coco

Coco Austin of Ice Loves Coco

Overall:“Coco is a gorgeous girl, but that streak of frosty blue pink blush, painted on eyebrows, hard eyeliner, overdrawn lip liner and goopy gloss ages her about five to 10 years,” says celebrity makeup artist Erin Skipley. “She's in her 30s now, and less is more!”

Eyes & blush:“A soft, smoky eye or iconic cat liner a la Brigitte Bardot or Marilyn Monroe would look great on her,” reveals Skipley. “The extreme blush makes her look hard. Thus, a sweep of luminizer above her cheek bones and a little bronzer would be just right.”

Lips: As for her lips, Skipley says they’re often overdrawn with thick looking gloss or color, which probably bleeds in a bad way. “She could do either a soft neutral or a caramel lip with a touch of shimmery gloss or a bright/bold lip color with a velvet-matte texture.”

“Bubble gum pink is not the right shade,” adds James.

6 Regrettable skin habits we're ditching this year

As much as we try to maintain a healthy skin care routine, it can be easy to slip up on occasion. But this year, we’re really taking stock of some of our worst habits and making an effort to curb any negative tendencies where our complexion is concerned.

Better skin habits to embrace

As much as we try to maintain a healthy skin care routine, it can be easy to slip up on occasion. But this year, we’re really taking stock of some of our worst habits and making an effort to curb any negative tendencies where our complexion is concerned.

Over-cleansing

You might think that nothing can be “too clean,” but when it comes to skin, over-cleansing can do more harm than good. That’s why this year we’re vowing to put the face wash down and scrub a little less. Twice a day is all you need — once in the morning and once in the evening. If you have to wash your face a third time , use an ultra-gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil. Washing too much can dry out skin and strip it of its natural oils, which can then cause flaking and irritation, especially in the colder winter months.

lotionUnder hydrating

Winter's cold, dry air calls for maximum moisture, and this year we’ve promised ourselves to give our skin whatever it needs to stay smooth and supple. Depending on your skin type, this might mean adding serum under your night cream to further hydrate skin, or it could mean switching from a lighter lotion to a heavier moisturizer in the winter months. Whatever you do though, just don’t let skin dry out. You can also add a hydrating mask to your skin care routine for a weekly beauty boost.

Every time we neglect to slather on some SPF, we feel a little bit guilty, so that’s why we’re making an extra effort to make SPF a regular part of our day. Even cloudy, gray winter days call for some protection from the rays, so we suggest opting for a lightweight formula to wear under your day cream and makeup in the a.m. — or opting for a day cream that contains an SPF of at least 15.

Touching our face

While you might not think you touch your face a whole lot throughout the day, you likely do so more than you realize . The problem here is not only the high chances for messing up your makeup, but also the risk of transferring oils from your hands onto your face . Try to be aware of whenever your hands go to your face and work towards curbing the habit.

Sleeping with makeup on

Getting home after a long night may mean not really having the energy to do anything but fall into bed, but this is the year we wash off our makeup no matter how many cocktails we consumed. It can be tough to resist the temptation of a cozy bed, but your skin will look and feel so much better if you take the five minutes to cleanse before hitting the sack. Makeup left on your skin not only clogs pores and causes breakouts, but you’re also risking skin irritation.

If you can’t remember the last time you washed your makeup brushes, it’s time to either buy new ones or start soaping them up. We admit that there are times when we suddenly realize it’s been too long between washings, but we’d rather ensure skin stays free of dirt and bacteria so we’re vowing to keep those makeup tools clean. Aim to wash your makeup brushes twice a month using warm, soapy water — mild, unscented soap works or invest in a brush cleaning product and allow to air dry. Your complexion will thank you.
