And if the Mayans are right? How to dress for the end of civilization

As we are painfully aware, the Mayan calendar ends Dec. 21, and with it, possibly civilization as we know it. end of the world
What to wear,
what to wear

As we are painfully aware, the Mayan calendar ends Dec. 21, and with it, possibly civilization as we know it. While we’re fairly confident that our bills will still be rolling in after the 21st, what if the Mayans were right? What does a gal wear for her last day of civilization? Here are a few ideas…

sweatpantsSweats

If the world ends Dec. 21, don’t you want to be comfortable? Why bother doing your hair, makeup or showering for that matter? If there is one positive thing about civilization coming to an end, it’s that we should live the final moments the way we want — in our sweats, with greasy hair, eating frosted pretzels and sea salt and vinegar chips.

heelsYour most expensive shoes

Remember how you tried to justify buying those $700 high heels by saying, “I’m going to be buried in those things!” Well, Dec. 21 gives you an opportunity to wear your favorite shoes that you paid way too much money for. If the winter solstice does mark the end of the world as we know it, at least we can go out in style. All of a sudden it really doesn’t matter how much you paid for those shoes, does it? In fact, if you don’t have a pair of “The World is Coming to an End” shoes, you now have the perfect excuse to go get a pair. Put them on your credit card, the payment for which won’t be due until after the 21st! See, the world coming to an end isn’t all bad.

braceletAll your jewelry

It’s important to remember that civilizations down the road may unearth our remains at some point. So how do you want to be viewed by that culture? If you wear every piece of bling you possess and you have a couple of tattoos, you will likely be thought of as a high priestess. It may not hurt to deck yourself out in a cocktail dress if “royalty” is the image you want to project. You should be warned that if you take our aforementioned “sweats” advice, future civilizations may view you as a peasant, or commoner. If you wear jeans and a T-shirt, you will likely go down in history as a laborer. If you wear something nice, but not heavily accessorized, you will be seen as a caregiver, which civilizations everywhere revere. So it’s really up to you. How do you want to be viewed by folks who may or may not stumble upon you five hundred years from now?

sequin topParty wear

Let’s get serious. The world is not coming to an end Dec. 21, which is reason to party! Strap on your favorite party dress and party shoes, invite everyone over and celebrate this most festive occasion. And if by some fluke the Mayans were able to predict, thousands of years ago, that life as we know it would end precisely on Dec. 21 of 2012, then at least you’ll be surrounded by your favorite people!

Anya says: 10 Secret style tips I use on the red carpet

The red carpet is just like any event that you would be going to in your daily life: You want to feel comfortable, confident and get compliments! I always say that if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you look good. So here are some secret style tips from the red carpet to make you feel like a star!

The not-so-secret things no one tells you

The red carpet is just like any event that you would be going to in your daily life: You want to feel comfortable, confident and get compliments! I always say that if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you look good. So here are some secret red carpet style tips to make you feel like a star!

Anya’s tip #1: White chalk

If you’ve ever spilled coffee or smudged lipstick on a white blouse, you need white chalk — such a simple thing that's an absolute necessity. Rub it on any stain or any white garment. This last-minute lifesaver is especially great for guys and their white collars.

Bonus stylist tip: You can use Topstick in a pinch to temporarily hem your pants when you don’t have time for a proper alteration.

Anya’s tip #2: Topstick tape

Topstick is my go-to doublestick tape. It's perfect for preventing wardrobe malfunctions or holding your clothing in place. Topstick is a necessity for any low cut blouse or showing bra strap.

zipper lubricant Anya’s tip #3: Zipper ease

This is always in my styling kit on the day of a big awards show. It's a zipper lubricant that can get your zipper up if it’s pulling, snagging or just won't budge. Nothing is worse than being ready to walk out the door and having your dress not zip. This has happened to me minutes before a celebrity was about to walk out on the red carpet.

Anya’s tip #4: Shoe pads

Everyone wants fabulous shoes, but no one is truly comfortable in heels. Add a shoe pad to give the ball of your foot cushioning so you can last in heels as long as you need to. You can also use shoe pads if your shoes are a little too big and you want them to fit more snugly.

Anya’s tip #5: Shoe stretcher

Have you ever bought shoes because you had to have them but secretly you knew they were just a little too tight? The shoe stretcher is the ultimate way to make your shoes fit. I will stretch a star's shoes the night before a big event just to ensure comfort on the red carpet.

Bonus tip: Rubbing dryer sheets on your hair can also get rid of static frizz and flyaways.

Anya’s tip #6: Dryer sheets

What is this laundry item doing on the red carpet? Dryer sheets are the quickest way to prevent static cling. You never know when you’re going to have unwanted static on your clothes, so be prepared with a dryer sheet.

VaselineAnya’s tip #7: Vaseline

What’s the last thing the stars do before they hit the red carpet? Dab Vaseline on their gums to hold a wide smile all day. This can work for you if you’re going to be somewhere where you are talking a lot, smiling a lot or giving a presentation and you know you might have a dry mouth. It doesn’t have to be fancy — any drug store Vaseline will do the trick.

Anya’s tip #8: Shapewear

Gone are the girdles — the new age of shapewear is comfortable, practical and can instantly change the way you look in an outfit. Every star, no matter what size, is wearing shapewear under their dress on the red carpet. Shapewear doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions — you can find comfortable shapewear to wear on a daily basis under your clothes and no one will know.

Anya’s tip #9: Erasers

Have you ever been worried about losing a pair of earrings? It may seem silly, but you need to stock up on #2 pencils. For red carpet events, I often borrow expensive jewelry and diamonds for the celebrities to wear. For extra security, I take the top of an eraser and place it behind the earring back to firmly hold the earring in place.

bronzerAnya’s tip #10: Go for the glow

Stars know the secret of the bronze: Having a tan will make you look slimmer. Whether you get a tan professionally done or do it yourself, plan ahead and do it a day before your big event. Not only does a tan make you appear slimmer, but it gives the illusion of a well-rested, healthy you .

Lastly, just remember that you’re a star and every day is your red carpet moment!

Winter solstice: Does your sign influence your makeup choices?

What's your sign?
Woman in winter snow wearing makeup

You bet your stars it does!

And retailers know it! Whether you believe in astrology or not, there are certain undeniable personality traits that are consistent with signs of the zodiac. Find your sign below and see how it may be influencing your makeup purchases…

Capricorn, Dec. 22- Jan. 19

Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

It’s your time to shine right now, and by that we don’t mean your greasy forehead! Capris are goal setters and planners, and social status is important to them. Because of this, Capricorns will always be up on all the latest and greatest fashion trends, and this includes makeup. While some of us may get caught in a makeup rut, a Capricorn wouldn’t be caught dead wearing last year’s eyeshadow trend. You Capris are the reason the first 100 pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair are makeup ads!

Aquarius, Jan. 20- Feb. 18

Aquarius
Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

You’re a fishy bunch! You like to share ideas and you love things that are unique, but interestingly you can also be classified as snobby! The makeup industry loves Aquari because they will share all of their makeup faves with their girlfriends, and you can bet their "must-haves" will be brand name. Women are competitive by nature, so if an Aquarius brags about a $30 lipstick, there’s a good chance her friends will give it a try.

Pisces, Feb. 19- Mar. 20

Pisces
Feb. 19 - Mar. 20

The flower-children of the zodiac are the reason we started to see glitter in eyeshadow, lotions and lip glosses. They are spiritual, emotional, intuitive, creative and mystical. Because they feel emotions on a different plane than non-Pisces, they are the largest purchasers of waterproof mascara.

Aries, Mar. 21- April 19

Aries
Mar. 21 - April 19

If you need something to get done, better search for an Aries. They are headstrong, courageous and tend to be leaders. Aries also love excitement so they love new innovations in skin care and makeup. When the Clinique counter is launching something new, the Aries line up.

Taurus, April 20- May 20

Taurus
April 20 - May 20

Taurus gets a bad rap for being stubborn, but they are also peace-loving. A female Taurus is inclined to purchase a minimal amount of makeup in earthy, subtle tones. Her makeup wardrobe consists of things you’d find in a field — lots of greens, browns and peaches. It can be difficult to tell if a Taurus is even wearing makeup, because they often don’t — and don't even try to convince them that they should.

Gemini, May 21- Jun 20

Gemini
May 21 - Jun 20

These children of spring are curious, talkative and versatile. It is that versatility that translates into moodiness. For this reason, girls of this sign tend to buy makeup that spans all spectrums. They will purchase heavy, dark makeup for when they are in a dark mood, bright red lipstick for when they are in a sexy mood and subtle shades for when they are in a girl-next-door mood.

Cancer, June21- July 22

Cancer
June 21 - July 22

Girl Cancers love to live rich, safe, comfortable lives and as you may expect, their choices in makeup are also safe and comfortable. A Cancer would no sooner sit at a makeup counter at Macy's to try something new than shave her head and tattoo her skull. If you have a Cancer friend from high school, she is still wearing her makeup the way she did in high school. These girls invented hair and makeup ruts, making the rest of us crazy, but they are totally comfortable with it.

Leo, July 23- Aug. 22

Leo
July 23 - Aug. 22

The show-offs of the zodiac want to be in the spotlight, so they will do whatever it takes to be the center of attention. For Leos, this typically means figuring out what makeup styles accentuate their features, and sticking with it, but having three to four choices within this spectrum. For example, if a Leo has green eyes, she’s going to want them to steal the show. So she’ll have purple eyeshadows, brown eyeshadows and gray eyeshadows and change them out depending on her mood.

Virgo, Aug. 23- Sept. 23

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sept. 23

Can you say type-A? Virgos are focused, organized and high performers. They are going to put more care into how their makeup is organized and stored than into the actual makeup. Virgos are responsible for all the handy compacts and under-cabinet storage bins for makeup that are now available. A Virgo’s makeup ritual will be strict and timed to the nanosecond so she can’t be wasting time looking for something.

Libra, Oct. 23- Nov. 21

Libra Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Social creatures that they are, Libras are going to employ a more approachable look. They won’t be too trendy or flashy, for fear of alienating others. Their look is a welcoming one, so it will be warm and subtle. Libras are less about eyeshadow and foundation and more about a touch of blush and a hint of mascara. Their tastes are simple, and their friendly manner makes up for their lack of makeup finesse.

Scorpio, Oct. 23-Nov. 21

Scorpio
Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Oooo, now for the naughty side of the zodiac. Scorpios are, much like the creatures they are named for, dangerous. They are the most mysterious and sexual of the zodiac. Female Scorpios are going to take more risks with their makeup, sporting bolder looks than other signs. They pioneered smoky eyes and shiny red lips. They are the girls whose makeup you admire, but you’d never dare try.

Sagittarius, Nov. 22- Dec. 21

Sagittarius
Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

This sign is all about fun. Sags like to travel, experience new things and are rabid optimists. Their makeup choices will include things that bring a glow to their skin and a twinkle to their eye. They never take any of their wardrobe or fashion selections too seriously, but they love combo makeup kits that are easy for them to toss in a duffle bag and hit the open road.

Keeping up with Clinton Kelly

Hoping to outshine all those other impeccably dressed girls on the holiday party circuit this season? While looking your best isn’t always a cinch, we chatted up the fabulously outspoken co-host of What Not To Wear and The Chew, Clinton Kelly, to steal his style secrets. Read on for his festive dos, don’ts and more!

SheKnows: Do you have any definite holiday style dos?

Clinton Kelly: Yes, do amp up the sparkle in your outfit! This is really important because you’re not incorporating those bright, vibrant, happy colors that you normally would during the spring/summer, so you have to create happiness by adding lots of shine.

SK: So true! Now, what about holiday style don’ts?

CK: Don’t be so literal. Sometimes people think they need to rock that Santa Clause red or Christmas tree green for the holidays, but oxblood, forest green or any sort of jewel tone color works just as well. Also, for New Year’s, don’t wear a shoe you can’t dance in! That’s a big no-no.

SK: Speaking of color, are there any specific ones women should steer clear of based on their skin tone?

CK: If you have a lot of red in your skin , you have to be careful about wearing red because it’ll only draw attention to these things. On the other hand, if you have an olive or yellow undertone, mustard is the absolute worst color you can don. Another tricky color to pull off is black. It brings out the black in skin , which can make you appear older. Cream is also hard for women with cream-colored skin to sport. Your complexion has to be perfect or else it’ll exacerbate those little flaws.

SK: OK, so tell us, what’s one festive fashion trend you really love this year?

CK: I’m really into printed and colored denim right now. It’s such a nice way to do a casual, polished holiday look, especially if you’re just celebrating Christmas with your family around the house.

Christmas sweater

"Christmas sweaters should just absolutely be illegal unless worn with some sense of irony!

SK: What’s one festive fashion trend you think should be banned?

CK: Christmas sweaters should just absolutely be illegal unless worn with some sense of irony! If you’re going to an ugly Christmas sweater party, then it’s OK.

SK: If you could give women one piece of holiday style advice, what would it be?

CK: Don’t forget about yourself. American women tend to be caretakers and often put themselves last on the priority list over the course of the year. So this holiday season, I would say wear something that makes you feel really good and really excited. Because a happier, prettier you only makes your family happy.

SK: Do you have any definite no-nos when it comes to dressing for an office party or a family function?

CK: At an office party, make sure the taste level is high. You have to remember that this is a work function. Don’t wear anything that’s sexually provocative, whether it’s your place of work or your partner’s. Photographs don’t go away anymore. Now they get posted on Facebook and live forever, so keep it classy. I’ve actually teamed up with Sargento Cheese to give one lucky person a “Taste Intervention.” You can upload your quirky holiday photos for a chance to win a $10,000 makeover and a free online consultation with me.

SK: As far as gift giving goes, what are a few fashion items that would make a great gift for anyone?

CK: When it comes to gift giving, never give a gift that has a size label in it. It’s a no win situation, unless it’s for your daughter and she’s a teen and you know her size really well. For example, if your friend is a size eight and you buy her a size eight and it doesn’t fit her, then you’ve made her feel bad about herself. Or if it’s too big and baggy, she’ll be like, “OMG, I can’t believe she gave me that size!” Think a beautiful cashmere scarf or a hat — cashmere is one of those things people love but won’t buy for themselves. You also can’t go wrong with gorgeous jewelry.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Stacy Keibler and Jessica Alba

0

Stacy Keibler and Jessica Alba's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Stacy Keibler

Stacy Keibler

Wow. I don't usually pay much attention to Stacy Keibler, but I couldn't keep my eyes off her this week when she showed to up VH1's Divas concert rocking this oh-so-sexy ensemble. This, my friends, is how you do a revealing pantsuit. Stacy's cleavage-grazing navy blazer could have taken a disastrous turn had she chosen to pair it with a revealing bottom, but instead, she cinched it with a nip slip-saving belt and total coverage pants.

Speaking of those pants... aren't they fab? At first glance I thought they were just leather; however upon closer inspection, I realized that they are partial leather, partial navy and that they totally make a perfect set when combined with the blazer.

The final verdict? If you've got it, flaunt it — in a respectable way, of course! Stacy created a magical rocker moment on the red carpet here and it was only amplified with her simply glowing makeup and sexy beachy waves. Am I the only jealous gal here?

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba

Pretty in pink, Miss Jessica! The actress dazzled in this pink Dior dress at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations last week. There are many reasons this look works, the first being the vibrant color. This shows all you naysayers that a gal can  wear hot pink in the cold months! Forget the drab black and navy looks, girls, there's no reason you can't light up a room in a bold hue this winter — just avoid any blatantly summery neon shades.

Another reason I'm loving the ensemble? The subtle peplum detail! This is a nice example of how to work a different shape of a peplum because as you'll see if you zoom on in, it's not a typical one. One last thought: Since she was rocking such a statement hue, Jess was wise to keep her shoes neutral and her hair beachy and breezy.

The final verdict? If I had Jess' disposable income, I would most definitely be heading to my nearest luxe department store to stock up on this adorable number!

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Jana Kramer's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Aww. That was my first reaction when I saw Jana Kramer's recent look at last week's American Country Awards! She just looks so pretty and elegant! Jana always looks amazing, but this 'do is a step above the rest, if you ask me. The curls are so delicately placed and frame her face perfectly. Her makeup is quite darling too!

I headed straight to the source to get the scoop on how to steal Jana's 'do and asked her stylist, Kelsey Deenihan, for a how-to. Here we go!

Get the hair look!

  1. I started out by blow drying Jana's hair with a large round brush to smooth out any flyaways.
  2. Next, in small sections, I used a 1-inch curling iron and wrapped sections around the barrel going away from the face, spraying each section with a light hairspray to hold the curl.
  3. I let the hair set while I did makeup, and about 45 minutes later, I took a flat boar bristle brush and brushed all the curls out giving it a ton of volume and an Old Hollywood look.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Krysten Ritter & Liv Tyler

0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Krysten Ritter and Liv Tyler's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Krysten Ritter

Krysten Ritter

Happy 31st birthday, Krysten Ritter! The actress attended a dominatrix convention birthday party at The Bank nightclub in Vegas, and it looks like the birthday girl was inspired by Anne Hathaway's S&M style last week in this Hervé Léger by Max Azria dress. Hervé Léger made the bandage dress famous, but this is more like the bondage dress.

Don't get us wrong — leather dresses are very in style this season — but there's a right and wrong way to wear this edgy material. When in doubt, keep it chic and simple. Instead, this dress has patterns, piping, a belt, a harness and long sleeves to boot. Speaking of boots, Krysten finished her look with a pair of Rachel Zoe ankle booties.

We actually think this look could be salvaged if she lost the sleeves and choker harness neckline that simply screams, "Take me to the torture chamber!" But all of this together is just too much.

The final verdict? We're cracking our virtual whip at Krysten for this painful ensemble. When rocking a leather look, try this strapless and sexy version from Zara.

Liv Tyler

Liv Tyler

Let's start with the positives when it comes to Liv Tyler's look she chose for An Intimate Night of Jazz in NYC. We think the black silk dress she's wearing has potential. But why did the designer have to add an oversized vest to the gown?

Liv, who's currently the face of Givenchy, is a tall, statuesque girl, but you can't tell under all of the fabric she's drowning in. As we mentioned, the baggy vest isn't adding anything to her ensemble. And with the long train and hemline of this gown, we simply can't even see what shoes she's wearing.

The final verdict? If you're going to accessorize a dress with a vest, we'd suggest a fitted one with a pop of color. We also think a bright, tailored blazer would have looked great with this getup instead. This isn't our favorite look of Liv's, but her hair and makeup are pretty.

A luscious holiday season: LUSH Cosmetics' top holiday gifts (Review)

0

Imagine cups of hot chocolate, chewy nougat, creamy vanilla — all in tubs or tubes on your bathtub. That's what you'll get once you indulge in LUSH Cosmetics' holiday offerings. Each one is a perfect surprise for yourself or a lucky recipient. Find out which ones we loved so much.

LUSH Cosmetics was started in the United Kingdom with the goal of bringing natural and hand crafted products to the public. Small batches and the hand crafted and packaged aspect of this immensely eco-friendly company means that you're getting something truly fresh and one of a kind. Indeed, almost all of LUSH's products have an expiration date or stamp on them to show they've been packaged by hand, and when.

This holiday season, we're obsessing over how much detail has gone into producing their festive beauty goodies which truly put the fun back into shopping. You don't have to worry about wrapping, and pretty much everything smells beyond delicious and kitchen made.

See which top five holiday products made our list:

1

Twilight Lavender Gel

Twilight Lavender Gel

Very likely the best soothing shower gel I have ever tried, this one is extremely calming yet unique with scents of purple lavender and tonka beans. The result is a warm, soothing mix that goes perfectly well with soothing holiday music and a hot mug of chocolate waiting for you in the kitchen. It is truly exceptional and worth buying in all three sizes: one for the bathtub, one for your gym bag and one for travel.

2

North Pole

North Pole

Peppermint and cocoa combine into one lovely pink/white soap that has a chewy texture . It has a sticky cocoa texture and peppermint in the pink part of the soap and is also filled with cedarwood and cypress oils in the white portion. This soap has a gentle, nice frothy lather and is just perfect for the season.

3

Ruby Red Slippers

Ruby red slippers

This is one absolutely gorgeous bubble bath bar: think shimmery red foam and a swirl of rose and carnation bath bubbles and fragrance. This is the stuff fairy tales are made of and a good memory of summer.

4

Glogg

Glogg

This is a shower gel fit for the holidays and is loaded with a generous helping of real organic red wine . Add to this mixture brandy, cinnamon and clove bud and you have yourself something truly special — a la mulled wine. It's aptly named Glogg , and has just a splash of orange juice to keep your skin glowing. A true winner for those who like their festive comfort food shower gels.

5

Christmas Candy Box

If you want to gift one prepackaged beautiful box that contains everything the spirit is all about, from fairies to peppermint candy canes, pick this box. It features Rock Star soap that smells of bubble gum, the famous Snow Fairy Shower Gel which blends cotton candy fragrance and iridescent glitter, Candy Mountain Bubble Bars, Bubble Gum Lip Scrub and a Busterball Bath Bomb .

Woman drinking water

Decking the halls and making merry means putting in more hours and if we’re not careful, looking like a holiday hag.

How to look undead

So how do you look bright and cheery when you were up all night cleaning for your mother-in-law’s visit? Try these quick fixes...

Holiday H2O

Drinking water gives you a healthy appearance because dehydrated skin looks sallow, dry and wrinkled. Water flushes toxins out of your system, also contributing to your skin’s glow. Puffy eyes are a red flag to the world that we are not properly rested, and water can keep your eyes from swelling.

cucumberEye-yi-yi

If you aren’t drinking enough water and getting enough sleep, your eyes will rebel. You’ll get puffy bags under your eyes and dark circles, neither of which is terribly attractive. What’s a puffy-eyed dragon to do? Many beauty advisors will tell you to avoid alcohol and salt, both known contributors. We’re not going to do that because it is the holidays, you’re stressed and asking you to avoid alcohol and salt is like asking you to not get annoyed when you have to wait in long lines. You can, however, try to minimize the look of puffy eyes with cold compresses or cold cucumber. Despite the urban legend surrounding Preparation H, it doesn’t work on puffy eyes. For dark circles, incorporate concealer and an under eye highlighter.

Cat naps

It would be patronizing if we told you to sleep more in an effort to look better rested. But, when you are burning the holiday candles at both ends, remember the value of a 20-minute nap in the afternoon. Don’t roll your puffy eyes! It works, and it can be done if you are properly motivated. During your lunch break at work, hop in your car, drive somewhere where no one will bug/see you and huddle up for 20 minutes. If you have full-time Mommy duty, plop your little Who-people in front of a Christmas movie and nod off on the couch. Drastic times call for drastic measures, and while 20 minutes may not sound like a lot, it is the recommended rest time so as not to disturb nighttime sleep patterns.

Quick walks

Exercise is the last thing we want to do during busy times! But after that noon-snooze, take another 15 minutes to go for a quick but brisk walk. It will help wake you up, restore color to your cheeks and give you more energy. You still have 25 minutes of your lunch hour left to eat! Stay-at-home mommies can bundle up their tots and take them for a brief stroll. Don’t be afraid of the cold air. As long as you and the chicks are dressed properly and don’t stay out too long, it is actually good for everyone!

bronzerHair and makeup shortcuts

You may have to deviate from your normal makeup routine during this ridiculously busy time. Use dry shampoo or baby powder in your hair instead of washing it every day. Use a little bronzer to counteract the pale tone your skin may take on when you are tired. Use peach colored blushes and wear lip color, but take it easy on heavy eye makeup that can contribute to a sleep-deprived look. Above all, remember that all your hard work will be worth it when your family is grinning from ear-to-ear on Christmas.

Fashion fight: East Coast vs. West Coast style

East coast vs. west coast

The eternal debate over which coast boasts better style — East or West — is one that may never get settled, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be explained. As impartial judges, we delve into this age-old fashion fight to find out what it means and where it stems from.

An East and West Coast insider

To get some insider info, we caught up with Marcy Roth, owner and buyer of AccessoryArtists.com. She’s a fashion industry veteran who recently moved from NYC to LA. Given her recent move from one coast to the other, she was able to speak to style on both coasts and she shares her insight with SheKnows.

West Coast style defined

While still an LA newbie, Roth can still attest that the “California cool” reputation the West Coast is known for is very true. “On the West Coast it’s all about looking creative and casual but also super chic,” she tells us. “Style varies depending on your neighborhood. Santa Monica has a different look than West Hollywood and Silver Lake, for example, but because of the weather, we must get even more creative with accessorizing because layering is only an option three months out of the year.” When it comes to jewelry, it’s all about mixing and matching. “You see lots of layering of small, delicate pendant necklaces or long bolder pendant necklaces that break up long flowing layers.”

East Coast style defined

East Coast style is definitely more polished, notes Roth, and centers around fashion-forward, structural sophistication. “The East Coast look is smart, buttoned-up and much more serious than its counterpart,” she says. “Handbags, shoes and jewelry are all statement-making style. With jewelry, you see bigger single statement pieces often and possibly a bit more sparkle.”

Some of the style differences come down to weather. “Most West Coast people do not have the range of clothing one is required to have living back East. In New York, we have our raincoats, winter coats, spring jackets, and for the uber-fashionista, maybe even a cape or two,” says Roth.

East vs. West: The rivalry explained

So where did this never-ending feud begin? Much of the rivalry comes down to the fact that each coast has such a distinct style and neither is willing to step down for the other. “I think any time you've got two major juggernauts competing, there will always be rivalry, but in this case, it’s mainly celebrity driven fashion on the West Coast, versus the fashion industry on the East Coast,” explains Roth. “In a nutshell, I’d say the rivalry is between reigning queen fashionista Anna Wintour and her stern yet classic way of dressing, versus the queen of West Coast and celeb fashion Rachel Zoe's less serious '70s glam looks.”

So whose take on style reigns supreme? It’s really all about personal preference. “I think they both respectfully represent their city’s vibe and attitude in fashion — they’re just very different and people love to debate what’s more relevant today,” notes Roth.

Tips for getting the look

If you’re heading to the West Coast, Roth stresses the importance of never confusing casual with lack of style. “Casual style takes as much effort and thought,” she says. “Keep it fun and a little flirty, and rock those accessories. Try a well cut T-shirt with a draped jacket and a cute pair of booties, and layer on the jewelry to complete that casual chic look and bring an amazing pair of sunglasses.”

If you’re traveling in the other direction, pack neutral colors, smaller prints and lots of texture, advises Roth. “A few dressy tops, the classic LBD and a sassy pair of black stilettos should be staples in your wardrobe,” she adds. “Play up one piece of statement jewelry complemented by more subtle pieces to pull your look together. It can also take you from day to night.”

The best beauty oils: More than argan oil

0
0
If you are a beauty product lover, by now you are familiar with argan oil and its benefits. The precious ingredient derived from the green nut of the argan tree is sold in hair care, skin care, body care and even cosmetic products. While its uses and benefits are well-documented, there are other oils that have similar or complementary beauty benefits. Read on to learn about oils you might not have heard of and even some that, although common, have amazing benefits.

Mango oil

Mango oil

You might think of the mango as a great fragrance but not truly a beauty ingredient. Mango oil contains high levels of antioxidants and beneficial vitamins A, C and E. Just one cup of mango contains 80 percent of your vitamin C for the day and 25 percent of vitamin A. Studies have shown that vitamins A and C have a direct influence on hair growth, making these vitamins a vital contributor to healthy hair. Mango oil also is excellent to add and retain hair's moisture. Try a product like Klorane's Mango Oil .

Tahitian Monoi oil

Tahitian Monoi oil

Monoi oil takes coconut oil to the next level. The Tahitians place a fragrant flower  into coconut oil for a process called enfleurage. The result is an oil you can use to strengthen your hair, moisturize your body, use as a bath oil or even as a perfume. To deep condition, fortify and add shine to your hair, try using it as a pre-shampoo treatment. Simply apply it to your dry hair, massage into your scalp and let sit for 10 minutes before shampooing hair. One to try is Moana Monoi Oil .

Marula oil

Marula oil

Marula oil from East Africa contains high levels of omega-3 and 9 fatty acids for amazing skin hydration. It also helps to trap moisture on the skin so your skin stays supple longer. This fast absorbing oil contains higher levels of antioxidants than argan or grape seed oil, making it a great choice for anti-aging skin care. Try Pure Marula Oil by The Leakey Collection .

Emu oil

Emu oil

Emu oil from Australia comes from an indigenous ostrich-like bird. This oil is rich in omega-3 and 6 essential fatty acids and omega-9 essential fatty acids . It is great for dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is widely used for sore muscles and massage. One to try is Thunder Ridge 100 percent Emu Oil .

Hazelnut oil

Hazelnut oil

Hazelnut oil is lightweight and great for sensitive skin. It has astringent properties that help to tighten the pores and limit oil output, which makes it a good choice for people with oily skin. Look for it in Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil .

Maracuja oil

Maracuja oil

Maracuja Oil comes from the Amazon and has been used for its beauty benefits for hundreds of years. It is extremely rich in vitamin C and essential fatty acids, making it a great choice to nourish the skin and revitalize damaged hair. This oil is sold pure or integrated into skin care and makeup. Try Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil .

Mane Event Mondays: How to protect your hair from heat

0
0
We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Master stylist Nick Arrojo is showing us how to protect our vulnerable strands against heat damage.

Woman with flat iron

Your question

Can you create a guide for protecting your hair from heat? Is it OK to use heat tools every day? How can you lessen the damage? How bad is blow drying?

Nick's answer!

Blow dryers, curling and straightening tools are a great addition to your styling arsenal because they allow you to shape and style your hair quickly and easily — an effective modern solution for our time-short lives. The price you pay, however, is the heat-induced damage to your hair. Sure, you’ll look great today and tomorrow, but constant use, especially of hot-tools, does damage the hair shaft, unless you take the proper precautions. And if hair is damaged, it gets increasingly harder to style effectively from day to day, which is when dealing with your locks gets frustrating.

If that happens, it’s really tough to get your hair looking good, no matter what cut you have, or product or tool you are using. So let’s look at some tips and tricks to using heat, without beating down on tresses.

A thermal protector

This is a must-have if you use heat tools regularly. They come in various guises and are designed to absorb and deflect heat, creating a protective barrier for locks. Most come in spray form and you should generously mist it into damp hair anytime you are using heat tools. Look for a thermal protector with added styling benefits. ARROJO protective thickening lotion, for example, features UV protection for hair, light hold and it helps to thicken and plump the hair shaft, which makes it a great all around prep product.

Handle your hair

For both curling and straightening irons, take thicker sections of hair into the iron all at once. Doing this means heat is being applied directly to fewer individual hair strands, reducing the amount of heat stress in the process. Take finer sections and you’ll encounter more heat and more stress.

Keep on moving

Another great way to diffuse that stress-inducing heat: Keep your heat tools moving as much as possible, no more than 15 or 20 seconds before moving on to the next section. It's better to repeat than to hold on too long.

Watch the settings

Buy irons that have a thermometer gauge and keep your heat tool on the lowest setting possible. Yes, a super-hot iron will make your hair straight and smooth right away, but do it a lot and you will soon encounter dried out, frazzled hair that will never go smooth and straight again until you’ve cut off the damage.

Color cues

Remember, if you use heat tools often, the damage can make it more difficult to achieve a successful color service. That’s because the cuticle can become dry and damaged and won’t open up as much when you or your colorist applies the color. This means the color fails to lock in to the hair shaft as well, reducing the short and long-term effect of color. If you do use a lot of heat tools and you’re going in for a color service, be sure to let your stylist know so they can account for it in the color process.

Choose your battles

As a general rule, avoid subjecting your hair to excessive heat whenever possible. Remember, a well-executed straight blowout will last you three days. And it's likely to look even better on the second or third day because your hair will be less susceptible to frizz and flyaways. So there’s no need to blow dry every day. If you’re curling your hair, remember rollers are a superb way to introduce brilliant, bouncy curls without the heat of a curling iron.

Repair and rebuild

If hair does get heat-stressed, it can be cured with the right care. A deep conditioning treatment restores life and luster, bounce and brilliance. To do it at home, use ARROJO hair repair masque. Packed with keratin, it offers intensive replenishment, perfect to restore radiance and make styling easy. The trick for the deep treatment is to leave it in hair for at least 10 minutes — run yourself a deep bath, put the masque on, lie back and enjoy!

How to curl pin straight hair

If you have curly hair, you want straight hair. On the contrary, if you have straight hair, you will do anything you can to make your hair curly. Isn’t that the way it always works? The right products and tools will help even the straightest haired gals achieve long-lasting, beautiful curls.
Woman with curled hair

Do you think you can?

If you have curly hair, you want straight hair. On the contrary, if you have straight hair, you will do anything you can to make your hair curly. Isn’t that the way it always works? The right products and tools will help even the straightest haired gals achieve long-lasting, beautiful curls.

Brocato Swell VolumeRealize that your curls start with the right shampoo

It all starts with a great body-building shampoo to get your hair prepped for great curls. I recommend Brocato Swell Volume. A volumizing shampoo gives your hair a boost where you need it most: at the root. Volumized tresses will set the stage for big, bouncy curls that last through the day.

Kenra’s Volume Mousse 17Discover the magic of mousse

Next, you’ll need a serious product to give your hair a firm hold while leaving it touchable and soft. Is there such a product? Yes! Mousse is perfect to prep your tresses for curling action. Kenra’s Volume Mousse 17 is a great pre-blow dry product that will give you all-day hold and style support while keeping your volume, body and shine. I always let my hair air dry for a bit so my hair can really absorb the product. Blow dry upside down to add volume!

Convert to clipless

When it's time to get down to curling business, try a clipless curling wand. It gives you a salon heat level of 410 degrees, allowing hair to heat up for curling and to cool off, really solidifying its shape. My pin straight hair held a curl all day when I used this type of curling wand.

Kenra Platinum Finishing Spray 26.Put on the finishing touches

Finish your fresh curls off with Kenra Platinum Finishing Spray 26. I really like what this does for my curls. It doesn’t weigh my hair down the way other finishing sprays do and best of all, it keeps my curls looking good all day.

BUT... don't forget to appreciate your straight side

Curling your pin straight hair can be challenging, but it ultimately really does look great. Straight hair is beautiful, too. Don’t forget to embrace yours! Many women pay big bucks to have their hair professionally straightened. We were lucky enough to get it in our genes!

What your nail polish color says about your mood

In the mood for a mani

Nail polish isn’t just a fun way to switch up your look or enhance an outfit. The shade you reach for can also say a lot about your mood and your personality. So take a look at your latest mani. The color could be revealing a lot more than you think.

For more insight, we got in touch with celebrity manicurist Gina Edwards for Kiss Products, Inc. and CND education manager Roxanne Valinoti for their thoughts on nail polish and mood.

Nail polish: The ultimate accessory

First things first — nail polish has become more than a basic beauty item, regardless of mood or personality. “Nail color influences a person's mood, but today nail color has become such an accessory in fashion, people are selecting colors regardless of mood and more towards the direction of their outfit,” says Edwards. Valinoti agrees. “Nails are the ultimate accessory. Color, shape and length can express your personality and maybe your alter ego!”

Your mani and your mood

So just what does your current nail color say about you? “A person with nail art over their manicure displays a fun personality and is a risk taker,” says Edwards. Taking it one step further, Valinoti notes that nail art tell the story of a free spirit who isn't afraid to experiment and may even embrace change. On the flipside, classic and neutral colors tell a more subdued story. “Classic colors, such as a traditional French manicure or neutral, soft pigments display a conservative side,” explains Edwards. Valinoti believes the same to be true. “A French manicure or sheer nude colors can communicate a more traditional, classic, professional personality.”

Red nails never go out of style, but what do they mean? “Red communicates glamour and sex appeal,” says Valinoti. Similarly, pink is another confident hue. It might not scream sex appeal, but it does show a take-charge attitude, notes Edwards. “Kiss Everlasting Gel Polish in ‘Punch’ is a beautiful bright pink and I find women who wear similar colors are more adventurous, outgoing and approachable,” she explains.

If you’ve opted for a polish in a darker hue, there are a few personalityattributes you could be showing off. “Dark nails are chic, trendy and communicate an edgy personality that appreciates a good challenge,” says Valinoti.

What’s your color?

Edwards shares a few mood-based colors and we’ve picked out some polishes to match.

Why you should add highlighters to your beauty bag

Shades & formulas for you

If you shy away from using highlighters because you're afraid of looking like a disco ball, you might just need a little guidance on using these makeup essentials. Used correctly, highlighters create flawless skin and can conceal and/or emphasize any area of your face. Learn which formulas and shades are perfect for creating your best face, just in time for New Year's Eve!

Choose the right formula and tool

If you have oily skin, powders are your best bet but should be used sparingly, or they can create more shine on your face. If you have normal skin, you can use it as a light finish after you have applied your makeup. Powders are best applied with a large powder brush or a fan brush for a softer touch.

Cream formulas are ideal for dry skin and are best applied with your fingers. Liquid formulas are ideal for normal to dry skin and can be applied with a foundation brush. For smaller areas such as under the eyes, the inner corners of the eyes or the cupid’s bow part of your lips, a pen is an ideal choice. These formulas are usually a lightweight, creamy liquid and are perfect if you are on-the-go.

Benefits Watts UpChoose the best shade and finish

Choosing the correct shade is vital to using a highlighter. Fair skin beauties should choose silver or champagne tones, such as Benefit’s Watt's Up . Olive skin looks great in gold shades such as Josie Maran’s Argan Illuminizer in Light Bronze . Dark skin can wear deep gold or bronze colors, such as Illamasqua's Illuminator in Glimmer Golden Tan .

You also want to pick the correct highlighter finish. Many people mistake glittery, disco ball finishes as “highlighter or illuminator.” These formulas have larger light-reflecting particles and are more costume than makeup. The two finishes to look for are shimmer or pearlescent. True shimmer formulas are best worn at nighttime and on small areas like the brow bones. Your best bets are formulas with a soft, pearly finish. Today, most highlighters and illuminators contain superfine light reflecting particles to create a lustrous, radiant glow.

Create bones and muscles

Powder or liquid formulas can create the illusion of brow bones if you lightly apply them just under the eyebrow and blend well. Boost your cheekbones by layering a cream highlighter over a cream blush. You can do the same with a powder formula by lightly applying the highlighter with a fan brush. To create the illusion of long, lean legs, start by self-tanning your legs. Next, apply a shimmer stick or powder from your thigh down to your shin and foot. The long, straight line will draw the eye up and down for the perfect optical illusion.

Look well-rested

Fake a good night's sleep by applying liquid or powder highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes. You can also use a concealer with light-reflecting properties to brighten the area under your eyes. One to try is BareMinerals Well-Rested Face & Eye Brightener . A dab of highlighter on the center of your upper lid will instantly brighten your eyes and face. Finally, create an all-over youthful glow and even skin tone by applying an illuminating lotion all over your face before applying your foundation. One to try is Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector SPF 25 .

Woman after sleepover

You wake up in a cute guy’s bed, eyeliner smudged, hair a mess and with a hangover that hurts so bad you think your head might explode.

Sleepover chic

You want to freshen up fast before last night’s hottie arises, but yikes, the only beauty products you’ve got to work with are the ones in his bathroom. So what do you do? We consulted a few experts to find out!

Messy bed head

Most men have some sort of wax, clay or pomade, which can be great for ladies as well, says stylist Erica Birdoes of Prive Salon Los Angeles. Sneak into his bathroom and apply any one of these products to the ends of your own mane to create a sexy, beachy look that’s absolutely ideal for bed head. “Flip your hair over and shake it out, while pulling the ends and adding in product at the same time. Then use the remainder of the product in your hand to smooth any fly-aways,” she advises.

Morning breath

Any respectable, hygienic dude surely owns a tube of toothpaste . Anyway, we digress… According to celebrity makeup artist Tara Loren, simply squirt some toothpaste onto your finger, dab it in your mouth to freshen up breath and rinse and spit. Now you’re ready to play tonsil hockey all over again!

Raccoon eyes

Does last night’s mascara look like a total hot mess? Don’t fret — there are plenty of ways to refresh your face stat. First, you can squeeze a pea size amount of his shampoo or lotion onto a Q-tip to completely remove crusty eye makeup, suggests Tara. Or if he owns ChapStick, celebrity makeup artist Julie Tussey of Angelo David Salon says this will also do the trick. Put a little ChapStick onto a Q-tip, wet the Q-tip, and then dab it underneath the eyes to clean up.

Greasy hair

This is when your guy’s baby powder really comes in handy! Use it to soak up excess oil in your hair and to add lift to your roots, recommends Tara. Also sweep lightly over your face to decrease shine .
