Do a celebrity style facial at home

0
0
We all look at celebrities walking down the red carpet at movie premieres and wonder how their skin looks so amazing. Most of the time, it is because they have had a facial 24-48 hours prior, designed to get their glow on for the big day. With the holidays and festivities coming up, here is how you can do your own celebrity-style facial right at home .

Woman applying face mask

1

Clean your canvas

Clarisonic Aria Sonic Skin Cleansing System

The first step is to thoroughly cleanse your face. You might think that just using a regular cleanser is doing the trick, but most of the time there is still dirt remaining on your skin. To get a true fresh face, you need a little extra help with the aid of a cleansing brush.

2

Exfoliate and peel

Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub

Now that you have created a clean palette, it is time to remove the top layer of skin to reveal the fresh skin underneath. Give your skin a two-fold punch by using a gentle polish followed by a peel that has a glycolic and lactic acid combination.

3

Go high tech

NuFace White Classic System

Now is the time to use the same high tech gadgets that are used by celebrity facialists to plump and tighten the skin. Start with a micro current device to tighten the skin all over your face, followed by a device specifically meant for the under-eye area.

4

Hydrate and soothe

Skin Nutrition's Phytomins Hydrating Face Mask

Follow your peel and firming treatment with a recovery mask to seal in your celebrity-like glow.

5

Finish with a serum

Darphin Vital Skin Anti-fatigue Dynamizing Serum Essential Vitality

Your final step in your movie-star facial is a vitality and radiance-inducing serum. These ultra-light formulas are better suited to penetrate the skin to deliver powerful ingredients and results.

Art is very much alive

NARS Cosmetics has always been a brand I've viewed as pure luxury. Now, it has a sparkling wit and an avant-garde twist to it, all in time for the holidays and there are several options to choose from. See how they measure up.

Andy Warhol is NARS Cosmetics' largest collection to date. From the Silver Factory Gift Sets to the Color Collection, the options for gift getting are rich, edgy and numerous.

Andy Warhol Color Collection

The collection includes the following:

Andy Warhol Color Collection

  • Nail Lacquer in shades Back Room , New York Dolls , Superstar , 15 minutes and TV Party
  • 47th Street Larger than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner which is black with a silver shimmer
  • Soft Touch Shadow Pencil
  • Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Holly Woodlawn , Candy Says , International Velvet , Penny Arcade , Viva
  • Satellite of Love Highlighting Blush in Sparkling Gold Sand

The nail lacquers are truly Warhol bright shades that offer a glossy texture and are easy to use. They're ideal gifts for the color-obsessed friend or relative. The Highlighting Blush, too, is remarkably light and subtly glowing and ideal for the holiday season. One of my favorites from this collection is the lip gloss, which is subtly bright for the holidays and is quite hydrating to boot.

The absolute genius of the names will make this collection an ideal holiday gift. And did we mention that the packaging is too cute NOT to collect? The Color Collection is available at Sephora and online at NARSCosmetics.com

Silver Factory

Chances are, you've already stocked up on the Silver Factory collection from the brand, and seriously, who wouldn't? These limited collection offerings pay homage to the genius of Warhol and are beautifully packaged to illustrate the image-rich creations and coolness of the artist.

The Silver Factory collection is definitely a luxury gift but includes a silver deluxe cosmetics bag that contains:

Silver Factory

  • Blush Brush N°8
  • Domed Eyeshadow Brush N°13
  • Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner
  • Desire Blush
  • Shadows Trio Eyeshadow
  • Silver Factory Multiple
  • Chelsea Girls Pure Matte Lipstick

If you can't splurge on this, there are other gift sets which have the elegant imagery Warhol is loved for, including the Edie Gift Set which includes an authentic 16 millimeter film canister containing Film Star Pure Matte Lipstick, Carpates Eyeliner Stylo and Deep Throat/Amour mini Blush Duo/Edie Eyeshadow.

My favorite from the Silver Factory offerings is the cheeky "Self Portrait" Eye Shadow Palette , which features variations of the 1967 painting. It also features Warhol quotes on the mirrors and is sheer genius.

Evolue day & night creamEvolue day & night cream

The bad news is it took me years to discover this miracle cream. The good news is it works on all skin types, is 100 percent natural and literally will get you compliments on your skin within days. Sweep this on in the morning and at night for a flawless finish and skin people will be talking about!

Bonus

I’ve learned that when it comes to skin care, less is more. Rather than clog your skin with every serum, cream and concoction out there, all you really need is one great moisturizer.

Ecostore Coconut & Vanilla BodywashEcostore Coconut & Vanilla Bodywash

I’ll admit it, I’ve spent way too much on luxury body washes trying to get taken away to a tropical oasis while in the shower. My search stopped when I found this ultra-luxurious bodywash. I love it because it has no nasty chemicals and it is gentle for sensitive skin yet smells amazing. The best part is that this fabulous body wash is under $5! FYI: I always keep this in my guest bathroom and have noticed after guests stay that it has gone missing!

Bella B Silky Mama Foaming Hair StrengthenerBella B Silky Mama Foaming Hair Strengthener

I discovered this hair strengthener while I was pregnant but continued using it long after as it works for anyone who just wants thicker, fuller hair. This natural foaming hair strengthener can give all hair types the thickness everybody wants with added silk and shine.

Taken PerfumeTaken Perfume

This sultry smelling perfume sticks on you like a second skin. With amazing notes of deep vanilla, this perfume keeps you smelling sweet and sexy. Light enough for daytime but sassy enough for night, I get so many compliments on my signature scent. My favorite part is that it’s a roll on perfume, which is perfect for the busy girl on the go who just needs a dab.

Sheila Stotts Removal BrushSheila Stotts Removal Brush

Extensions or no extensions, this brush is hands down the best for an easy and quick detangle and instant hair “pick me up.” Great for all hair types, this is the only brush you need to have because it does it all! Clear out the clutter from your hair drawer because you just found the treasure.

Scott Barnes Body BlingScott Barnes Body Bling

Have you ever gone to put on a dress and realized that your legs were too pale to pull it off? Having a tan takes time, money and energy that most of us don’t have. I discovered this miracle product years ago and now I buy it in bulk. Scott Barnes, a celebrity makeup artist who’s worked on everyone from J.Lo to Jessica Simpson, originally created this product for photo shoots and music videos. Now you can get the J.Lo glow, too. I like to mix this product with lotion and rub it on my legs and arms for a beachy bronze.

Buddha Nose Moisturizing Body OilBuddha Nose Moisturizing Body Oil

This body oil is one of my favorite moisturizers — it soothes your skin all day long. It is the perfect year-round solution to dry skin and not only leaves your body refreshed, but your mind as well.

That's it — the cabinets are unlocked. Here’s to a beautiful you inside and out!

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Kristin Chenoweth

We have a total crush on Kristin Chenoweth's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!
Kristin Chenoweth's ponytail

We're Obsessed!

We have a total crush on Kristin Chenoweth's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Kristin Chenoweth is already just about as cute as a button, and this week, she made me love her even more with this adorable ponytail she sported in LA. I love the low pony detail combined with the slight bump at the top. The look is sleek yet not so put together that it screams "I just left the salon." Super cute, right?

I sought out the help of Kristin's stylist, Jonathan Hanousek, to find out how we can steal her darling style at home. Here we go!

Get the look!

  1. To create Kristin Chenoweth's flirty retro ponytail, I applied Kerastase Mousse Volumactive to her roots for volume and Kerastase Elixir Ultime Rose Millenaire through the midshaft and ends to add shine and softness. Both are great on fine hair without weighing it down.
  2. Next, I blew dry the hair with a medium round brush, directing heat over the crown to add lift and volume.
  3. Next, separate out a triangle section of the bangs. Backcomb the rest of the hair through the crown and back of the head.
  4. Use a Mason Pearson brush to smooth the surface, but be careful not to remove too much of the backcombing.
  5. Collect the hair into a ponytail. It can be in the center or off to the side.
  6. I like to use a Bungee Band for these ponies because they don't destroy the shape as you lock it in. Just make sure to hook it over the band when you fasten it.
  7. Take a small piece of the ponytail and wrap it around the band and secure with a couple of bobby pins.
  8. Use a tail comb to lift the crown and refine the shape.
  9. Part the bangs down the center and polish them with your brush. They should be drawn down and back towards the pony. Hold them in place with a few shots of hairspray. I like Fekkai Sheer Hold because it's dry and not sticky.
  10. For added bounce, use a large curling iron and curl the ends of the ponytail.
  11. Finish everything with a few more shots of hairspray.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Kristin Cavallari and Reese Witherspoon

Kristin Cavallari and Reese Witherspoon's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Kristin Cavallari

Kristin Cavallari

Kristin Cavallari is becoming a frequent fixture on Friday's Fashion Obsessions! The new mom showed up to the Chinese Laundry Shoe launch party in NYC this week looking red hot as usual!

Aww, doesn't Kristin look all Christmas-y? Red is the color of the month, after all! Aside from my Christmas obsession, let's get down to business: Kristin looks stunning here. The dress tucks in at her waist and shows off that svelte post-baby bod, but it also has an adorable high fashion bejeweled flare detail.

The final verdict? Radiant in red! Pretty, vibrant hue and totally flirty silhouette. Great outfit inspiration for holiday parties!

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon

So Kristin and Reese totally have flip flop outfits here! Reese is in a LBD and red pumps and Kristin has black pumps and a LRD . How cute! Where did Reese rock this totally cute look? At a March of Dimes luncheon in Beverly Hills this week.

Like I said a few weeks ago, I'm a sucker for a detailed LBD. Black can get boring after a while, so it's always nice to spice up the classic look with some nice detail. Here, Reese rocked some super stylish sleeves and took an otherwise normal dress to rock star status.

The final verdict? It's like a peplum for your neck! Totally cute look, Reese.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Anne Hathaway and Miranda Lambert

0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Anne Hathaway and Miranda Lambert's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

Is Anne Hathaway a Method actress? She played a prostitute in Les Miserables, and by the looks of her streetwalker-ready bondage-inspired shoes, she's still in character in this Tom Ford ensemble she chose for the NY premiere of Les Mis.

We're so confused by Anne's look, since she normally has such classic and sophisticated style. The actress is wearing head to toe Tom Ford, including this black gothic caped dress from his spring 2013 collection with a thigh high slit. Not everyone is Gwyneth Paltrow and can pull of a Tom Ford cape, Anne. Gwyn's look worked because it was sleek and chic, while your billowing black cape is reminding us of a trash bag.

And then there are those S&M shoes, which were also custom designed by Tom Ford for her in vegan leather for animal lover Anne. Save those for your Fifty Shades of Grey audition, please.

The final verdict? You know how they say remove one item before leaving the house? Anne must have chosen her undies that night, because she suffered a wardrobe malfunction while exiting her car in this tight dress. You don't have to put on the red light, but you do have to put on panties when paps are present!

Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert

Was Miranda Lambert dressing up for Halloween or the American Country Awards? The sequined piping on her minidress reminds us of spider webs. We also think the country crooner was torn between going classy and tacky in this getup.

The turtleneck and long sleeves on her black and silver dress say business, while the super short hemline says Viva Las Vegas, where the awards went down. But the whole look screams "I need a stylist who knows how to dress my body type" to us.

The horizontal sequin stripes make her petite frame look shorter and wider, and the half-bun hairdo seems dated. Instead of showing off her great cleavage, Miranda kept that all covered up and bared too much leg instead with this super short outfit.

The final verdict? When in doubt, stick to a fashion formula that works for your figure. And remember, turtleneck dresses have no place in Las Vegas!

8 Holiday style tips from Taylor Jacobson

We caught up with celeb stylist Taylor Jacobson to get the lowdown on what to rock this holiday season and how to avoid an epic New Year’s Eve fashion fail! Because hey, we’ve all been there before, right?
Taylor Jacobson
Taylor Jacobson recently showed off her style chops in a pair of black scalloped shorts with a funky button-up collared tank at the launch party event for the new Foundry boutique in LA. We're loving the look! What about you?

'Tis the season to shine!

We caught up with celeb stylist Taylor Jacobson to get the lowdown on what to rock this holiday season and how to avoid an epic New Year’s Eve fashion fail! Because hey, we’ve all been there before, right?

Keep things conservative for an office party

“I’m a big fan of high-waisted pencil skirts with a tucked in blouse,” declares Jacobson. “They show off your figure without revealing too much. Now if you’re the boss,” she notes, “you can wear whatever you want!”

sparkle heelsSteer clear of head-to-toe sparkle

While Taylor is certainly a firm believer that you can never have too much bling, she is quick to add that decking yourself out in head-to-toe glitz is taking the trend a little too far. For instance, “If you’re wearing a sequin dress, don’t style it with crazy shoes and a sparkly headband,” she warns.

Ask yourself, what would Blair Waldorf wear?

“I know this sounds cheesy, but I was watching Gossip Girl the other night and Blair Waldorf always dresses chic but conservative, so just look to her as far as what to wear around your family for the holidays.”

Pair frumpy Christmas sweaters with skinny jeans

Headed to a tacky sweater party? Taylor suggests pairing your frumpy sweater with something fitted on the bottom, such as skinny jeans or leather pants. If it’s thinner, you can also belt your sweater, she says. “And if all else fails, just drink a lot of Champagne so you completely forget what you’re wearing and think you look really good!” Uh, we can definitely get on board with that last piece of advice.

if all else fails, just drink a lot of Champagne so you completely forget what you’re wearing.

Do take advantage of being able to dress up

“I love the holiday season because you can actually get dressed up and go out, whether it’s for dinner or whatever, and no one thinks twice,” says Jacobson. In other words, make the most of this time, ladies.

Save some cash by purchasing inexpensive accessories

On a tight budget? “Forever 21, H&M, Aldo and Ann Taylor are all great places to find affordable accessories, especially for the holiday season.”

Know your venue and dress accordingly

To avoid an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, Jacobson recommends knowing your New Year’s Eve venue and dressing accordingly. “I wore this long, white satin gown with a train and a low back to a club last year,” she recounts. “It had really thin straps and while I was dancing on a banquet [table], one of the straps broke and it just fell down! Luckily, the boyfriend I was with at the time was helping me with wardrobe changes so I had a sequin dress to change into in the car.”

Have fun and remember: Confidence is key!

We asked Taylor to name one festive fashion trend she thinks should die, like immediately. After jokingly telling us that she hates them all , she gave us this little nugget of holiday style advice: “Just have fun and wear whatever you want confidently. If it makes you happy, then that’s all that matters.” We couldn’t agree more, Taylor!

Beauty inspired by Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year

Kate Middleton loves it — and now you will, too! Pantone just named emerald green as its official color of 2013, the company announced earlier this week.
Emerald green is everywhere!

Pantone's color of the year

Kate Middleton loves it— and now you will, too! Pantone just named emerald green as its official color of 2013, the company announced earlier this week.

"Green is the most abundant hue in nature — the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“It’s also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity — no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity."

The rich hue is the pregnant Duchess' color of choice— she's worn an emerald green Mulberry dress to several events over the past year. And why not? It's flattering on everyone, no matter if your skin tone is pale or dark.

Need some inspiration to work emerald into your wardrobe and beauty routine? We've rounded up some of our favorite looks and beauty products for your face, nails and body.

Face

Emerald green makeup

Emerald works best on the eyes as either shadow or liner. For eyeshadow, we're loving Elizabeth Arden's Beautiful Color Eye Shadows in Shimmering Emerald. The colors are even infused with vitamins A and E and Retinyl Linoleate to moisturize and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The emerald eyeshadow retails for $19 at Macy's.

Want to go brighter? Make Up For Ever offers up a cream eyeshadow in emerald green. The cream is formulated for easy blending and is guaranteed to last without creasing. Find it at Sephora for $23.

Make Up For Ever also sells their popular Aqua Liner in emerald green. It's water-, smudge- and tear-proof with a foam tip for easy application. Available at Sephora for $23.

Nails

Emerald green nail polish

Emerald green works especially well for our nails — it's bright but still professional enough for the office. Nail pro Skyy Hadley of As "U" Wish Nail Spa told SheKnows her customers are already asking for the color because "jewel-toned emerald is a classically elegant color that makes my clients feel sophisticated, rejuvenated, balanced and radiant," she said.

Hadley gave us a rundown on her favorite emerald green nail polishes. Her favorite? Sally Hansen's Magnetic Nail Color in Electric Emerald.

"I really love this fun and easy magnetic trend!" she said.

Another favorite Hadley uses on her customers is China Glaze's Emerald Sparkle and ZOYA Nail Polish in Suvi .

"Love the strong and durable formulas!" she added.

We also love, love, love butter LONDON's emerald shade, British Racing Green 3-Free Nail Lacquer .

Jewelry

Emerald green jewelry

Emerald green is a perfect accent color for accessories. We literally spent the majority of an afternoon going through the various emerald-tinged accessories we found. Our faves? We're loving this Malchite Resin and Scarab Cuff by Kara Ross . The green — set off by the black and gold — gives off a serious elegant vibe that can be dressed up or down.

We're also in love with these Diva Green Quartz & Labradorite earrings , mostly because it's something we can picture the Duchess of Cambridge wearing. These Green Avain earrings are also totally cute — and different.

Beauty Beat: A tour of Real Housewives’ Kyle Richards' new store

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards takes us on a tour of her new store, Kyle by Alene Too, and even models some of her favorite outfits.

Kyle Richards

Socialite Kyle Richards always looks impeccable while hitting up the hottest soirees in Hollywood on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. So when she opened up a new clothing store near Rodeo Drive, we knew it would be an immediate fashion “do.”

We popped in the boutique, Kyle by Alene Too, recently to check it out and get the scoop on the hottest looks this season from the fashionista herself.

You get to a point
where you have to learn
what’s age appropriate

Kyle Richards

When we arrived, the always cool Kyle was looking absolutely chic in a blue biker jacket, while at the same time chasing her adorable 4-year-old daughter Portia around the store. Once she’d appeased her little one with some sweet treats from the store’s candy jar, we were ready to play dress up. Kyle not only gave us a tour of the store but also tried on some of her favorite outfits.

Our date with Richards ended with an exciting surprise when fellow RHOBH star Lisa Vanderpump, whose restaurant Villa Blanca is just a couple of doors down the street, stopped by to say hello.

Take our tour of Lisa's other restaurant, Sur, with Lisa and Jiggy!>>

Off-camera, Lisa and Kyle briefly filled me in on some of the drama we can expect this season: specifically more catfights with saucy new HousewifeBrandi Glanville.

Kyle Richard's Beverly Hills style

Join SheKnows as we get an exclusive look at Kyle Richards new store... Kyle by Alene Too

Kyle’s style

Richards, the younger sister of Kathy Hilton and aunt to famous sisters Paris and Nicky, has become quite the style icon herself. The mother of four always manages to capture the hip Beverly Hills look without dressing too trendy or revealing.

“You get to a point where you have to learn what’s age appropriate,” Kyle told us. “I don’t like to show too much leg, and I don’t like to show off my chest too much. And a lot of women are wearing neon. I really think that’s a younger look.”

Kyle’s picks for fall/winter

How to look hot despite being bundled up

Winter wardrobes are a mixed blessing. Sure they may camouflage the extra 10 pounds we gained during the holiday feeding frenzy, but all those layers can start to make us look like a Sumo wrestler if we’re not careful. So how does a fashion forward gal stay warm on the inside but still look smokin’ hot on the outside? Behold, the age old secrets of looking hot in winter…

Red shirt

Red hot

Color is so important in the winter — because we lose all of ours! Think vibrant, warm colors like rich brown, deep orange and of course, fiery red!

Red is synonymous with hot, so it'd be hard to look average when wearing a sweater in a hot hue like this one . It will bring out the color in your face, resurrecting your pre-middle-of-winter complexion.

hat

Hats are hot

Winter fashion is about creating a focal point that pulls the eye away from the multiple layers that make you resemble a Yeti. Hats are a fun way to do this… but think sexy, not goofy or cutesy. Choose a color that makes your eyes really stand out, like this hat does . One final hat rule: Do not, no matter how many times you see girls doing this, buy a furry hat with furry flaps that go over your ears. You will resemble Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The hat is supposed to help you look hot, not like a hot mess.

Scarf

Scarf up

Scarves are a dicey accessory because if you aren’t careful, they can make you look like your grandmother at a church potluck. There's a cool way to wear scarves that will make you look hot. You just have to be mindful of fabric, design and texture. For example, leave the silk scarves with anchors all over them to your daughter’s third grade teacher. What you want is a light fabric or a delicately knitted or crocheted accessory.

Look for unique patterns in fabric scarves, but not overly busy designs. Fringe or unfinished edges should be delicate and interesting. Avoid bulk. And your neck can be a very sexy part of your body, so in the winter months, don’t be afraid to let a little of it peek out.

Boot

BOOTay-licious

Boots are probably winter’s sexiest accessory. Even boot makers like Sorel have departed drastically from their classic Caribou boot to offer warm, practical boots that are sexy in a more outdoorsy kind of way.

Practical boots aside, boots come in countless designs. It’s hard to mess up this look, so go for something that complements your winter wardrobe while sassing it up. Just remember not to slap guys who say, “Nice boots.” They are talking about your footwear!

Woman with thinning hair

We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Larry Sims, celebrity stylist, is showing us how to preserve already thinning hair.

Your questions answered!

Your question

How can I preserve my thinning hair?

Larry's answer!

Thinning hair is something no woman wants! After all, sexy bombshell hair is popular for a reason. Sometimes we can't prevent nature when it comes to our hair, so a little thinning is inevitable depending on your hair type. That said, we wanted to know a few ways to slow down or prevent extra thinning, so we turned to our pal Larry Sims, celebrity hair stylist.

Larry's first piece of advice? Watch how you style those locks, ladies! "The best way to preserve thinning hair is to not snag or break the hair during your styling process. Hook rubber bands and natural boar bristle brushes are great." Nice tip, Larry — a trip to the drugstore is in our immediate future for these essentials.

Larry's second and final piece of advice deals with the tools you use for styling, and more importantly, the settings you use. "Using low heat while styling with thermal tools is essential as well. Heat protectants are golden when it comes to preserving the hair. Smooth ‘N Shine Silk ‘N Sleek Straighten Polisher protects your hair up to 425 degrees."

Nice advice, Larry! We feel a little bit better now.

Socks with heels? We say why not! You might think your pumps and peep toes won’t work with your collection of knee high and ankle socks, but the right combinations can be ultra-cute. We’ve sourced seven pairs of must-have heels and paired them with socks for a simple way to try the trend this winter.

Lace and leather look

Snow Angel Color Palette

Can a single holiday palette give you the options of many? Stila Cosmetics has proved that it absolutely can. The Snow Angel Color Palette is a seasonal collectible and gives you endless dazzling options.

When it's the holiday season, it's the time to be merry — especially when you do your makeup. Stila Cosmetics' Snow Angel holiday palette looks like a giant snowflake and is filled with 12 cheek colors and 18 eyeshadows to be worn wet or dry.

It also contains a Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara to complete the eye look, and as with any Stila product these days, also has a detailed step-by-step artistry look book with instructions.

The idea behind this giant palette was to create as many holiday looks as you want, and I love the idea of mixing and matching the shades, which include the following:

18 Eyeshadows

peace, love, gold, sleigh, cookie, dashing, eggnog, icicle, dance, merry, kitten, jingle, gingerbread, truffle, chestnut, cool, clove, fairy

12 Cheek colors

shimmery snow angel, shimmery coral, shimmery apricot, shimmery peach, shimmery pink, shimmery plum, matte pink, matte plum, matte berry, matte melon, matte clay, matte bronze

What I love about the eyeshadows is their staying power: You can easily blend them over the lids without using primer, and they go on beautifully dry. If you want to use them with a wet brush, these will help your holiday look get depth and sparkle without you looking like Dame Edna. The cheek colors give you shimmery options as well and are ideal if you want to achieve a soft, ethereal look while providing everyday matte options.

In other words, this palette can help you get a day to glam look in no time, and it's beautifully priced as well. If you're thinking of giving one makeup splurge to a junkie who will appreciate it, this is a good bet! This is what I would call a "young" palette though — I'd be more inclined to gift it to the teenager or 20-something who loves to wear shimmery and frosty shades.

Since this palette does not come with lip shades, you can complement your look with the delicious lip glazes that this brand is known for.

The best tips

I’m still stuffed from Thanksgiving and am now on the hunt for some great gift sets for those who I adore! Lucky for you, I’ve scouted out all the great deals at the mall! Here are a few of my package deals this year!

Nars

This holiday season, NARS has released a fantastic set of gifts inspired by the art legend, Andy Warhol. Now we can really paint our canvas like an artist!

MAC

Then there’s MAC! They have a whole selection to choose from this season. My favorite? The brush sets! These make a great gift for your friends or yourself. While you’re at it, don’t forget your MAC makeup wipes — there’s nothing on the market like them.

Kiehl's

Whether you’re shopping for your assistant, your sister or someone else, these great gift sets from Kiehl's give lots of variety and range in price.

Kerastase

The hair brand has one of the best value gift sets out there this year and free shipping if you spend over $100.

Bargain blowouts

One of the best bargains for the holidays is the $35 blow dry at the Phyto blow dry lounge at The Fred Segal Salon in Santa Monica. Phyto has some great gift ideas as well.

Beautiful tools

If you are looking to get your first blow dryer, curling or flat iron for yourself or as a gift, get the best and forget the rest. Here’s where you can find a great selection from Solano.

Sparkling hairstyles!

Now what about your holiday hair looks for those holiday parties? Whether you have to go or you want to go, there's one rule: You should always look amazing. Who knows — you might meet Mr. Right there!

  1. Take the front bangs area and create a braid (if you have bangs, take a side section and give a little spray with phyto laque soi.
  2. For the rest of the hair, take a brush and backcomb the roots loosely. Brush the surface tight at the sides, but leave volume on the top.
  3. Include the braid and take it all back in either a nice ponytail, or do a ponytail and wrap the ends around and spray again. Pin either to the side or dead center at the nape of your neck.
  4. For longer hair, take two braids in the back and wrap around the top and pin. Braided headbands can be great too but weird when the color doesn’t match, so choose wisely.

Add some sparkle and get yourself out to your local flea market and look for something fun and unique, with a bit of a story to it. Who knows — it may become a great talking piece at a party. A simple clip to pull the hair off your face can be as effective.

A headband pressed on top of a backcombed knotted hairdo is a great modern look. Leave it on the messier side.

Have a great holiday, be safe, and don’t drink and drive.

Soft, supple lips are a must-have all year, but the winter weather can sometimes wreak havoc on them. This easy DIY peppermint lip balm will solve that problem!

DIY Peppermint Lip Balm

This is an easy DIY project that can be a lot of fun — not to mention the fact that it produces a great lip balm. These make great gifts for friends, too, and they’re perfect for stashing in a purse or bag.

DIY Peppermint Lip Balm

Use cosmetic-grade products for this project. You can find the supplies at stores like Hi-Health and Whole Foods. You can find the containers at craft supply stores. We decorated the lids of our containers with stickers and beads for a finishing touch.

DIY peppermint lip balm

Supplies:

  • 1 tablespoon pure shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax pearls
  • 8 to 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 4 containers

Instructions:

1

Melt the shea butter, almond oil and beeswax in the top of a double boiler or a heat-proof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Whisk until the ingredients are melted and turn to liquid. If your mixture doesn’t melt quickly, add it to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 10 seconds, and then whisk until everything melts.

2

Remove the mixture from the heat and add eight to 10 drops of peppermint essential oil.

3

Quickly add the mixture to a glass measuring cup with a spout, and pour it into the containers.

4

Allow the containers to sit for about 30 minutes until the balm is solid, and then add the lids.
