Sarah Hyland

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Sarah Hyland's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Is it just me or is Sarah Hyland absolutely adorable? She seriously does not look like she's 22 years old! The Modern Family actress showed up to a Trevor Project event this week rocking a totally adorable updo that I can't really get out of my mind. It has the perfect amount of height and ever-so-carefully placed wispy strands, don't you think?

And that makeup. I was crushing on it so hard I just had to find out how she got the look! I asked Sarah's makeup artist/hairstylist, Kelsey Deenihan, for a breakdown of the entire look so you can steal it at home! You can thank me later.

Get the hair look

"Sarah's hair was inspired by the '60s look we were going for!" Kelsey says.

  1. I started with the hair in a tight high ponytail.
  2. Next I took sections of the ponytail and rolled them forward with my fingers and pinned underneath.
  3. I then took the next sections on the sides and rolled them outward, toward me. And the back sections I rolled under.
  4. Pinning the sections around the pony created a full, "effortless" bun.
  5. I finished with a little hairspray and she was out the door. This is a great look if you have limited time but want a very specific look. It's easy!

Get the makeup look

"Sarah said her pink Erin by Erin Fetherston dress reminded her of Jackie O and all things '60s. The bows on the back of the dress inspired us to keep her look youthful with a messy top bun and rock out '60s style with the heavy winged liner."

  1. I started by applying Koh Gen Do Moisture foundation in 023 all over Sarah's face, starting with the product in the center of her face and blending outward.
  2. I wanted to keep the skin fresh and youthful, so I didn't want to powder over the foundation and matte her down too much. In keeping with powder-free skin, I opted for a creme blush on Sarah. I used La Prairie Cellular Radiance Cream Blush in Rose Glow for a pinch of color.
  3. Next I applied Chanel cream eyeshadow in Vision all over Sarah's lids. The small gold flecks catch the light, making the eyes sparkle.
  4. Under the lower lash line I applied Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Bourbon and blended it with a small brush allowing the product to blend out and not create such a harsh line.
  5. I applied Bobbi Brown black gel eyeliner with a small angled brush to Sarah's top lash line — extending the liner out and slightly upward allowed us to stay true to our '60s inspiration.
  6. I topped the eyes off with two very generous coats of L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black on both the top and bottom lashes.
  7. I lined the lips with NARS Tonga and added a coat of Chanel Lipgloss # 297 in Sweet Beige. The milky pink beige was the perfect complement to her dramatic liner without competing for attention.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Katie Holmes & Ke$ha

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Katie Holmes and Ke$ha's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes is starring in a Broadway play called Dead Accounts, but it was her style that seemed to have flatlined when she stepped out for the opening night premiere in NYC. Suri's freshly single mom chose a printed Bottega Veneta dress from their spring 2013 collection for her big night.

This blah dress just simply isn't right for leading lady Katie. Did anyone tell her that she's the star of the whole show? She really isn't dressing the part in this frumpy getup, with the high neckline and super long hem that'd be better suited for a Scientology fundraiser. We'd love to see Katie, who's also a designer herself, wear something bright, colorful and fit for the starlet that she is.

The final verdict? Props to Katie who's doing a great job juggling being a single mom and having her own career, but it's time to step it up in the style department. We suggest letting your stylish daughter Suri pick your next outfit. She always dresses to impress!

Ke$ha

Ke$ha

Poor Ke$ha overdosed on prints when she got dressed for KIIS FM's Jingle Ball in LA. The Die Young singer wore a black velvet and gold 7 For All Mankind suit, which she paired with a floral printed blouse. More is not always more!

The suit itself isn't awful and we feel the same way about the blouse, but together, they totally clash! If Ke$ha had worn the tapestry-esque suit with a simple black top underneath or just worn the blouse with skinny jeans, this look wouldn't be so bad. But throwing all of these together just hurts our eyes.

The final verdict? Print on print isn't the easiest trend to pull off, but your clothes should always complement each other, not compete for attention. But hey, at least she toned down the crazy makeup this time.

Letter from the editor: Why you shouldn't be afraid of clinical skin care

My skin care routine has mostly consisted of cleansing before bed and then moving through a few simple steps of facial sprays and moisturizers. Easy peasy. Simple has always been my motto when deciding what to put on my face. More recently, I've become obsessed with preventative tricks to help avoid the regrets that sink in when more wrinkles start to surface.
Clinical vs. over-the-counter
The pros and cons of clinical skin care

What's to fear?

My skin care routine has mostly consisted of cleansing before bed and then moving through a few simple steps of facial sprays and moisturizers. Easy peasy.

Simple has always been my motto when deciding what to put on my face. More recently, I've become obsessed with preventative tricks to help avoid the regrets that sink in when more wrinkles start to surface.

I had the chance to sit down with Danae Markland from PCA Skin, a clinical brand gaining recognition not only for its skin care products and treatments, but also as educators. I was convinced that since I wore sunscreen every day and remained very regimented with my skin care, even if it was a simple routine, that my skin surely wouldn't show any signs of aging. Wrong.

They took a photo of the deepest, darkest layers of skin and showed me the invisible signs of aging just waiting to surface. It really drove home what every skin care professional has ever told me. "Take care of your skin now!"

PCA sent me on my way, and after taking their products for a test drive, a few have become staples in my routine.

you have to trick [your skin] into doing what you want it to do.

Here's what I've learned from Danae and this experience:

Retinols are like magic

As Danae put it, "Retinol is a fantastic ingredient no matter how old you are." Why? Because it does so many things! "Retinol is responsible for stimulating collagen production. It's also great with acne because it breaks down the impaction inside the follicle." But, let's also talk about the other common skin care problem in the room. Hyperpigmentation. Retinol will break down discoloration and exfoliate the dark spots out of your skin at a speedy rate.

"But I had a bad experience!" you say...

Intensive Clarity Treamtent and the Intenstive Age Refining Treatment

"A lot of the time, people shy away from these types of products because of one bad experience," said Danae. But, you shouldn't let one bad experience make you steer clear of such a magical ingredient.

PCA's two popular retinol products, the Intensive Clarity Treatment and the Intensive Age Refining Treatment, will give you similar results to prescription strength Retin-A products without all of the irritation, flakiness and dryness that people tend to experience.

"So, can't I just buy an over-the-counter retinol product?" you might ask. Not exactly. According to Danae, the biggest difference between over-the-counter brands and the more clinical kinds is that clinical brands use higher percentages of active ingredients. "We can get away with it in a clinical setting because the health professional is prescribing it and making sure that it's appropriate."

Chemical peels don't have to make you peel

Cue drying and flakiness, right? Not always. I can't speak from experience on this one, but PCA offers peels and treatments that all have one thing in common: "They allow you to go on with your daily life," said Danae. "You definitely still have to protect your skin after you exfoliate in any way, but you can definitely go on with your daily life."

Supporting ingredients count

Ingredients that fight aging: Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, peptides and antioxidants

There's no 'I' in 'team,' folks. While chatting about the magic of retinols to combat conditions like discoloration, rosacea, acne and aging, it's important to note that the supporting ingredients in retinol products are what will help you see even more dramatic results. This could also mean using additional products to really fill out your anti-aging army.

For instance, dark spots. "Our Intensive Clarity treatment is excellent for those [but] we also have spot treatment products for the actual spot itself," said Danae. By using both products, you get faster results. Simple enough!

Your skin can be fooled

As we were talking, I began to notice a common thread. The goal is to fool your skin into doing what you need it to do. "Essentially any skin condition just means that your skin isn't functioning properly. If we can bring it back to baseline, you're going to see healthy results."

An epidermal growth product is one that can help you do this. "[It's] basically going to trick your skin into producing healthy cells. Sometimes you have to trick it into doing what you want it to do."

How to stand out at the holiday party without looking like a strobe light

$
0
0
We’ve all attended holiday parties with gray-haired ladies who are wearing dresses and jackets that look like a bedazzler threw up all over them. Bless their hearts — they just want to look fancy. But there has to be an easier way to garner attention in a room full of sparkly stuff. Well there is. Here’s how it’s done…

sequin dress

Use sequins sparingly

Shiny things cast a spell over most women. We see something that sparkles and reason goes out the window. If you choose to wear an embellished frock, make certain that your dress' decor has been applied judiciously.

A sequined collar, cuffs, hem or skirt is acceptable. If you choose to wear a tank top covered in sequins, pair it with a plain skirt and vice versa. A crucial rule of thumb is that the sequins must match. Whatever you do, do not buy an article of clothing where every color of the sequin rainbow is represented.

cuff

Budget your bling

One of the most successful ways to gather appreciative glances at a holiday party is to wear something simple, coupled with several fun pieces of bling. Think of yourself as a Christmas tree. The tree itself is kind of basic, right? It’s the ornaments that make a tree pretty. But a Christmas tree can quickly resemble a Christmas nightmare if you throw every available ornament, light, tinsel, garland and candy-cane on it. When it comes to party-wear, consider a simple dress with a long and heavy necklace and a shorter more detailed necklace. If you do this, skip earrings or wear something small and simple. Switch this concept around by wearing chandelier earrings that would make Beyonce jealous, but skip the necklace. Lastly, don’t forget the importance of a good cuff. Cuffs are bold and sexy and are the perfect ornament for your wrist.

wrap dress

A good fit

Your best accessory is an outfit that flatters your shape. It doesn’t matter how much your husband spent on those diamond earrings — if you are 10 pounds overweight and stuff yourself into a size six, you’ll be getting attention for different reasons. Accept your physical shortcomings and dress around them. You want people to notice the great pair of shoes you wore, not the fact that your a** looks like two pigs fighting under a blanket. Don’t forget that the most important piece of your holiday wardrobe is what no one else sees — Spanx. Squeeze into whatever body armor is necessary to ease out any lumps and bumps.

eggplant dress

Color

If you want to stand out at a holiday party, black isn’t going to do it. Everyone wears black during the holidays, but when you think about it, how festive is that? Yes, it helps to disguise weight, but it’s also worn to funerals and in board rooms — or is it bored rooms? Consider a dash-o-fab by dressing in the colors of the season — red, green or winter white. A splash of the right shade of pink or eggplant is something to consider too. If the color you choose is well accessorized and fits you well, you will be the belle of the Christmas ball, and everyone will be whispering about how you look — for all the right reasons.

Don't pretend you don't remember this line from the classic '90s flick Clueless, when Christian says this to Cher during homeroom class; the light bulb that is Nair went off in all teenage girls' heads. But these days, we don't need to depend on the smell of burning hair for smooth legs to wear with short shorts — we have Venus, specifically, Venus Embrace. This new five-blade razor is built for smooth, soft legs and it does its job. This little guy makes a perfect stocking stuffer for your tween sister or your sorority sister. Find it at your nearest Ulta for $13.

5 Fashions to ask Santa for

$
0
0
'Tis the season to run around like crazy people and shop, purchase and wrap tokens of our esteem for those on our Christmas list. But what about what we want? Who cares, you ask? Why Santa of course! Jolly St. Nick is happy to oblige your fashion desires. Here are a few ideas meant to inspire...

Sassy lingerie

Sassy pants

In some parts of the country, winter can drone on for months. Gray skies, dirty snow, holiday weight and cold temps can give any gal a case of the fashion screw-its. As anyone with ovaries will tell you, when we wear something sassy underneath all those unflattering winter layers, it makes us feel like a goddess. OK, maybe goddess is a stretch, but it at least makes us feel less frumpy. Ask Santa to put something very skimpy, very beautiful and very expensive under your tree.

Vintage holiday dress

Vintage holiday dress

Ah, for the good ol’ days when dresses were designed with nearly every female figure in mind. These styles gather at every girl's slimmest point, the waist, and have a conservatively low neckline. Best of all, they balloon out at the butt and thighs. Quite brilliant when you think about it — showcase the skinniest part of our body, put the girls on display in a classy way and give us room to eat whatever the heck we want. This is why if you’ve been a good girl, you should add a darling vintage holiday dress to your letter to Santa. You can wear it Christmas day and/or New Year’s Eve, and depending on the style and color, you may be able to rock it again on Valentine’s Day.

Faux fur vest

Faux fur

Faux fur is one of those rare hybrids that is warm and cozy but makes us feel sexy. How many things can you say that about? And no, your flannel pajamas don't count. There's also something about faux fur that makes us feel like a warrior princess — taking us back to our cave-gal days when we could conquer any challenge.

Dare we suggest that faux fur brings with it an element of power? Ask Santa for something with faux fur — a cozy jacket, a sweater or if you’re particularly daring, a hat. Our pick? This sassy vest.

boots

Wickedly impractical boots

Those of us who live in regions with long winters have to spend our winter boot budget on practical boots. They need to be warm, comfortable and waterproof. These boots don’t really fall into the “hot” column, per se.

Since the sky is the limit with Santa, ask him for a pair of boots that are way out of your budget and that will make you feel like a superhero. Having these kicks sitting around will cure the winter blues every time you put them on, and Santa wants you to be happy.

Ice

What would winter be without ice? Something that sparkles, like this gorgeous necklace, always makes us feel pretty. You know what we're talking about — like those days you wear your thrashed sweats, get up from the couch only to pee and eat but you have your cubic zirconia earrings in, so you somehow think that makes it OK? Santa would love to get you something you would ordinarily never get yourself. So put a little ice-ice-baby on your Santa wish list and dig out those ratty sweats.

Woman with smooth hair

We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Celeb stylists Larry Sims and Gerard Caruso are telling us what hair oils are worth our attention!

Do hair oils work?

Your question

Oils seem to be all the rage. Which ones are the best and what will the results be?

Larry and Gerard's answer!

Since oils are such a hot topic these days, we tapped the advice of two of the industry's hottest hair stars — Larry Sims and Gerard Caruso — to get the scoop on what oils will help our hair look fab every day!

According to Caruso, oils are major multitaskers and help treat the hair in many ways. "Argan oils such as Rusk Deepshine Oil, Rusk Being Sexy Argan Oil Serum, Moroccanoil or even Kerastase Oleo Relax allow hair to be rehydrated, seal cuticles, restore moisture, add shine and calm frizz."

Now that we know how much oils can do, let's find out which ones can help us cure two hair ailments we all hate — dry strands and split ends.

I think we can all admit that we hate dry hair, right? Sims has just the oil to treat and prevent this pesky symptom. "To restore hair's natural moisture, I suggest using Smooth ‘N Shine Olive & Tea Tree RevivOil Treatment Oil on dry or wet hair. Remember that a little bit will go a long way! For extra moisture, use the product on wet hair and sit under a thermal dryer for 10 minutes.”

Now what about the dreaded split ends? You can use the same treatment oil! "To get rid of unwanted split ends from thermal styling and external weather conditions, while protecting and moisturizing hair, I suggest using Smooth ‘N Shine Olive & Tea Tree RevivOil Treatment Oil. Apply to damp hair before blow drying, and be sure to saturate from root to tip for added moisture and protection."

Sometimes stocking stuffers can be trickier to buy than actual gifts, but this season, we’ve got you covered. For any beauty buffs on your list, why not get a little cheeky and give out some funny nail polish hues that are a little ironic?

Any British BFFs on your list will love this nail polish nod to their homeland. Not to mention the color is fab, too. The subtle frosted pinky-beige is just a notch above neutral and ideal for everyday wear. Sport this eye-catching hue at the office or any time .

In the Limelight

In the Limelight

We all know someone who craves the spotlight and always seems to be the center of attention. For those friends, we recommend this luscious lime green . The wild and wacky hue is perfect for those days a regular red or pink just won’t do.

Wined-up

For any friends on your gift list who fancy themselves wine snobs , then this rich burgundy-red with a fitting name is the ideal choice for their stocking

Big Spender

Do you have any friends or family members who like to shop ? We suggest gifting them with this hot pink polish with a fitting name for any mall addict . The creamy, violet tinged pink is sure to get noticed and makes a fun, flirty addition to any look.

Pokerface

For that friend who keeps their cards close to their chest , there’s this aptly named nail polish in a pretty shade of creamy lavender . The subtle sheen makes it a great choice for the holiday season, but the pastel-pretty shade is also ideal for warmer months.

I’m Not Really a Waitress

I’m Not Really a Waitress

We love the idea of giving this bold magenta hue to anyone who is an actress-slash-waitress or anything-slash-waitress for that matter . They’d need to have a good sense of humor, but if there’s no fear of insult, then this makes a funny, cute stocking stuffer, not to mention a fabulous nail color.

Is your makeup aging you?

Following up where we left off last month, I’ve unearthed a few more youth-sabotaging faux pas just in time for all the picture-snapping that will be taking place during the holidays! Think back to years past spent at family and friends’ gatherings where a "special effort parade" takes place with unfortunate makeup. Let’s seize this opportunity to review and update questionable beauty habits that are best left in the attic along with those grim ornaments you see at your uncle’s place once a year. Shall we?

Woman looking into compact mirror

Don't walk this thin line

eyeliner

Never wear dark eyeliner only on the lower lash line. This one is a classic no-no and has been around for quite some time, as it was probably introduced sometime in the ‘60s. Rock-n-roll imagery was in its infancy and black-eye-pencil-rimmed eyes became all the rage with teenage girls. Even 25 years later, many of them were still seen perpetuating the fad to sad results.

Teenagers can get away with a lot of experimentation, but adult women who pencil in only the lower lash line as a quick, old habit fix visually drag their eyes down, and make themselves look a bit tired.

Solution: Turn that definition around, literally! While lining the top lash line, make sure to soften the inner corner edges to avoid looking unnatural, and thicken slightly as you draw the line outwardly to lift the gaze. This is the easiest trick in the book when it comes to perking up any droopy, fatigued-looking eyes.

Smooth your crease

Say no to hard, unblended eyeshadow in the crease. Also a ‘60s staple, this look has had quite the revival within editorial makeup, seen in magazines all over the world. On a young model with the most amazing bone structure, the effect is dynamic and avant-garde. However, when attempting this technique to salvage a seemingly saggy eyelid, I can pretty much guarantee that onlookers will be gawking with total fascination, wondering ‘really?’

Solution: Try a soft, neutral, gray eyeshadow and blend from the crease, up. Steer clear of the eyelid to successfully open up the eyes. One can identify the inner crease by touching the eye socket with a finger; the starting point is exactly where the bone and the eyeball meet. Use a round, fluffy-tip eye blending brush for optimized results — the operative word being BLEND. Do so until no hard edges can be seen anymore, while steering clear of darkening the so-called highlighting area just beneath the eyebrows.

Doll face

Run from heavily pigmented cheek color! A disaster in waiting unless applied by veteran and skilled makeup artist, the fight that lies ahead from using rich colored blush has already been lost. The poor little cheeks will be left with cockatoo-like rouge that echoes ‘80s Pat Benatar in a battlefield with more than a peaches-and-cream glow.

Solution: Use sheer-pigmented, texturally soft blush colors, as they are much easier to blend. Just take notice of the beautiful depiction of health staring right back in the mirror! In terms of color, bright pastel tones are a favorite of mine because of the uplifting result they offer. I also like a gentle cream-to-powder finish that mimics the appearance of a vigorous, oxygen-filled complexion. When applying blush, avoid the hollow part of the cheek normally reserved for contouring and try to remain on the upper-frontal part of the cheekbone. Smooth out all edges as a final touch.

Say no to this lipstick color

Time to retire those brown lipsticks. Not only are they making you look worn out, they suck the life out of any plump lips, with injectables or not! The brown-based makeup wave had a good run in the ‘90s - Jennifer Aniston in Friends, anyone? - but she quit wearing anything maroon on her pout long ago. In fact, she has never looked better.

lip gloss

Solution: Just like Jennifer, try on sheer or clear, pastel-based lip colors that illuminate the face and attract light. Brighter and more vivid lip stains can also have a caffeinating effect on your features and exponentially enhance any genuine smile. Just remember that the brighter the lipstick, the more defined the outer edge of the mouth has to be, since feathering or an uneven lip line tend to appear magnified. Additionally, staying away from too much lip balm or gloss can prevent lipstick bleeding.

Note

In our mind, aren’t we all five to 10 years younger than we actually are? Makeup should always be an anti-aging friend that enables us to project on the outside what we truly feel like on the inside. This holiday season, stay on top of it by not clinging to ancient makeup headaches, and hopefully that spiked fruit punch won’t leave as strong of a hangover. May these makeup solutions help keep the odds ever in your favor!

Need a new fragrance for the new year? Check out Lacoste's elegant new scent set to debut in early 2013.

The Lacoste fashion house has named Amy Adams as the face of their new women’s fragrance called Eau De Lacoste. The iconic sportswear brand chose Adams for her “elegance, spontaneity and effortless style.” The new fragrance is intended to capture “the sensual feeling of pure white cotton on skin.”

The French fashion house has been around since 1933 and has been a popular brand since the 1960s for their iconic polos with the green crocodile logo. The brand has recently reached major popularity over the past decade and now has stores across the globe and online.

In the past, Lacoste has featured a variety of men’s sports fragrances ranging from Essential, Essential Sport and the line of Eau De Lacoste L.12.12. The pink collection, which features Touch of Pink, is the brand's most recent women’s fragrance line meant to “exude an aura of feel good, youthful optimism."

Eau De Lacoste features top notes of juicy white pineapple, Calabrain mandarin and Calabrian Bergamot as well as heart notes of pineapple flower, rose, orange flower, jasmine sambad and base notes of sandalwood, vetyver, vanilla and Peru balsam. Although Adams’ style may not scream the classic preppy style for which the brand is known for, she is still excited to represent the brand. She says, “I’m so excited to be the face of Lacoste’s newest fragrance for women. Lacoste has long been established as an iconic brand and I’m honored to be a part of their latest campaign.” The 38-year-old actress has recently been evolving into quite the style icon, so it’s obvious why the French brand would choose her to represent their chic new perfume.

The brand is hoping to tap into their 10.7 million Facebook fans by promoting the fragrance early with a large scale online promotional campaign, where you can sign up for an early VIP sample. You can also catch Adams and the sparkling new scent prior to its nationwide Jan. 9 release in TV and print ads. These multiple campaigns for the brand's fragrance will begin in the UK and make their way across the globe throughout next year.

The holiday season is here! For many of us, that means six weeks or more of parties and thus a lot more food and drink than we typically consume! Start planning your holiday attire by choosing those outfits that fit you best, and then modify and accessorize to allow for the holiday indulgences. Follow my top five figure-flattering tips to look your slimmest from Thanksgiving 'til the New Year!

The underpinnings… Suck it in: Get yourself a shaper

Smooth Couture High Waist

OK ladies — let's face it. Our mothers, grandmothers and women throughout history have been wearing shapewear in one form or another. Why? Because women know that we can all use a little help fitting into that sheath and looking 10 pounds slimmer. With the technology today, shapers have reached new levels of sucking and shrinking while adding comfort.

I recommend choosing a high-waisted shaper that comes up right underneath the bust line. This helps keep everything nice and smooth. The Haute Contour line from Spanx is one of my secret weapons for tummy control. The powermesh and sleek spandex is GENIUS and holds everything in place. The best part? It’s actually comfortable!

Va Bien has a fabulous new shaper style called Smooth Couture High Waist . This short not only holds you in with their powermesh but has additional boning to prevent the waistband from rolling.

Another fabulous product and alternative to shaping slips are the Spanx stockings and patterned tights. Not only do they hold the tummy in and the bottom up, but they also come in a bevy of festive colors and prints — perfect for the holidays.

Create a waist: Cinch your middle

Belts are a great way to define a waist and create yet another slimming illusion. I suggest belting the waist at the smallest point . Choose a belt that suits your body type and frame. Not everyone looks good in a thin belt. In fact, generally a wider style will have a greater slimming effect. Don’t have a belt but want to accent your waist? Try a piece of grosgrain ribbon! Tie it in a bow at your side or in the back and you will have a perfectly festive waistline.

Choose a color

Look five pounds lighter by dressing in a single color. The trick here is creating a vertical line and drawing the eye up. Try matching your skirt, top, stockings and shoes . The effect will be modern, monochromatic, streamlined and slim. Kick things up a notch and look 10 pounds slimmer by dressing in black. Remember black doesn’t have to be boring — add a sequin cardigan, foxy shoe, statement necklace and bag!

Pro control! Choose silhouettes that are balanced

Bootleg jeans are surprisingly flattering on most body types. Choose a dark wash and mid-rise style that sits on your waist. Pair jeans with a heel or boot, longish blouse and a cropped fitted jacket that nips at the waist. This will give the illusion of long legs and a tiny middle.

Party peplum

Peplums can have a slimming effect and are GREAT for masking a tummy and accentuating a small waist. Whatever you pair with the peplum should be streamlined to accent your shape. Check out my October article for more tips on how to rock the peplum look.

You can find me at the gym on Jan. 1, but until then, be confident, be beautiful and happy holidays!

Anne Hathaway wears bondage-inspired vegan boots

Anne Hathaway opted for some custom-made Tom Ford boots for the New York City premiere of Les Miserables on Monday night. What makes them so special? They're 100 percent vegan!

Anne Hathaway wearing Tom Ford vegan bondage boots

Anne Hathaway went dark in head to toe Tom Ford Monday night at the New York City premiere of Les Miserables — all the way down to her knee-high boots.

The 30-year-old actress turned heads in the bondage-inspired boots, reportedly made of custom vegan "leather" by Tom Ford himself. They're totally interesting to look at, though they give off a distinct knee brace vibe.

It seems like her role as Fantine in the big-screen adaption of the Broadway classic has really changed her. Maybe it has something to do with the super-short hairstyle she adopted for the role. Not that she was really convinced about cutting it at the time.

"I was faux Zen about it. I’d resolved to cut my hair for Les Mis and to do it on-screen to make it feel real,"she told Glamour for her January 2013 cover story. "And then the morning came, and I was shaking like a leaf. I almost couldn’t do my job. When it was over, I went to the darkest corner of my trailer and I looked in the mirror, and I saw my little brother! But eventually I felt like the coolest girl in the world."

Then again, the darkness might be because she's just hungry. Hathaway tried to play off rumors that she starved herself for the role — even claiming that she ate oatmeal paste while on set — but now she's finally copped to starving herself.

"I just had to stop eating, all for a total of 13 days' shooting," she told The Hollywood Reporter last week of her quest to drop 25 pounds.

Yikes. Let's hope she's eating again.

Holly jolly hair: 3 Hair ideas for holiday parties

Heading to a holiday party ? Then amazing hair is a must, girl! Curious about what looks will make an impact this season, I headed to my trusted friend Jeffrey Lyle of Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon. With a few of his favorite local bloggers as models, Jeffrey transformed their hair into 'dos that are bound to impress.

Unbelieveable updo

Unbelievable updo

Blogger Mon Petit Chou Chou knows the value of a polished updo and wanted exactly that for her standout holiday look. "She wanted a modern version of an Audrey Hepburn-inspired French twist," Jeffrey says. Steal the look with these tips!

  1. Start with day old hair .
  2. You want to build a base, so spray a dry shampoo at the root all over the crown.
  3. Next, take a "U" shaped section from temple to temple and secure up out of the way.
  4. Working on the bottom section, brush one side toward the center back, next brush the opposite in the same direction, wrapping around your finger to create the twist and secure with pins.
  5. Take the top section down and working forward, take 1-inch sections and lightly tease the base. As you move toward the front, smooth the front of the sections.
  6. Create the desired height you wish in the back and start brushing teased sections backwards and wrapping around the bump in a "C" shape.
  7. Secure each pulled back section with pins.
  8. Leave your bangs out and loosely pull sides out.

Bombshell tresses

Bombshell tresses

'Tis the season to "tress" to impress! The blogger behind Spreedia was jonesing for a look that screamed "bombshell.""This is inspired by the Victoria's Secret hair every woman wants," Jeffrey says. Steal her style with these tips!

  1. Start by taking vertical sections and work your way up and around the head with a curling iron.
  2. Secure each section with pins to allow them to cool and set.
  3. Trick: The longer you allow the hair to cool, the stronger the curl will be.
  4. Once you reach the top and crown area, your sections should be horizontal. These sections should be larger for a looser curl.
  5. After allowing the set to cool for at least 10 minutes, take all pins but the front ones out.
  6. Work your fingers through hair to break it up.
  7. If you find your hair is too curly, use a brush and lightly run through your hair.
  8. Remove the front piece and let fall in place.
  9. Finish with a light hold hairspray.

Beautiful bob

Beautiful bob

Seeing as though short hair is pretty in vogue right now, it's no surprise that the Boston Fashionista wanted a classic 'do. "She wanted a '40s-inspired bob," Jeffrey says. Get your own beautiful bob with these tricks!

  1. This look works best on a layered haircut.
  2. Start with a basic roller set. I recommend taking zigzag sections to avoid leaving a line.
  3. After completion, spray with hairspray and allow to cool.
  4. Depending on your length, pin the underneath sections up to create the length of the desired bob.
  5. Allow the top layers to fall over to create the new outline of the bob length.
  6. Brush the bang section back at the part and the length to fall over the eye .

Bonus tip

We all know getting ready for holiday parties can cause unwanted stress. But did you know that stress can actually cause sweat that smells worse than your average perspiration? Yuck. This party season, we're planning to beat stress with Secret Clinical Strength antiperspirant/deodorant! The product is proven to be four times more effective at preventing stress-induced underarm wetness than a regular antiperspirant/deodorant .

Cinch it: 5 Easy ways to define your waist

$
0
0
Want to look like you’ve lost an inch or two without hitting the gym or even breaking a sweat? Do something to define your waist. Yup, it really is that easy and we have some simple ways to create a more streamlined silhouette.

metallic leather belt

Belt it up

Belts are a style must and give you the illusion of a waist even when you don’t have a defined midsection. Adding a belt to anything from a shift dress to an oversize sweater can have a big impact on your look. This season, go for metallic or skinny vibrant belts.

Our pick: Add some bling to any cooler weather look with this sleek snake-embossed metallic leather belt .

Peplums, please

While peplums aren’t new , don’t discount them just yet. Peplums as extensions on tops and dresses are a great way to define your waist. By flaring out from the waistline, you create an illusion of a more cinched midsection. Yes, please!

Our pick: We love this lace peplum top , which would look great paired with slim black trousers and heels in a vibrant hue.

Flared skirt

Flared skirts

One of the best ways to cinch your waist is by donning a fun, flirty flared skirt. Since they flare out from the waist, they create a narrowing effect that’s flattering just where you need it most.

Our pick: Add this simple flared skirt in indigo, charcoal or orange to your cooler weather wardrobe . Pair with knit tights, a semi-sheer button-up and platform pumps.

wrap dress

Don a wrap dress

Diane von Furstenberg was on to something when she created the wrap dress, a design that was made for flattering a woman’s body. Since it wraps around and essentially hugs your middle, it creates a feminine silhouette, and more importantly, helps define your waist.

Our pick: While this silk Rachel Roy wrap dress might be a splurge , it has the style chops to become a go-to wardrobe item. Add ankle boots and a faded denim jacket or boyfriend blazer for an on trend fall look.

Tuck it in

Creating a slim midsection and pulled together look comes down to wearing a shirt that tucks seamlessly into your bottoms. Opt for slim-cut button-ups and fitted tees and turtlenecks to avoid excess fabric that just creates more bulk around your middle.

Our pick: Every wardrobe needs a good quality crisp white shirt you can tuck into trousers or even denim for a streamlined look.

Skin care secrets from Beauty Bootcamp

Susan Van Dyke, M.D., led a Beauty Bootcamp to give expert advice on skin care options. Questions like, "What's with that Clarisonic tool anyways?" and others popped into our head. So we turned to Susan for the answers on antioxidants, natural skin care and more.

Woman applying face cream

Susan Van Dyke, M.D., recently led a Beauty Bootcamp to give expert advice on skin care options. Questions like, "What's with that Clarisonic tool anyways?" popped into our head.

Yes, doc?

So we turned to Susan for the answers on antioxidants, natural skin care and more.

clarisonic

SheKnows: So, some women might be intimidated by the Clarisonic tool. Let’s talk about the benefits and why we shouldn’t be afraid to try it.

Susan Van Dyke: Clarisonic is not an electronic scrub brush. The beauty of the technology is that it works without the harsh scrubbing and shearing forces that can break down collagen . It uses the vibration of oscillating soft fibers to work water into pores, which provides a true deep cleansing. This is similar to the ultrasonic toothbrush which can cleanse the small spaces between the teeth and gums.

SK: Can you give us a brief rundown on the popular lines SkinMedica and ColoreScience?

SVD: SkinMedica is a physician skin care line renowned for using TNS. TNS is a highly concentrated skin growth factor serum that stimulates new collagen. When TNS works together with peptides and powerful antioxidants, the serum reverses the signs of aging such as fine lines, brown spots and roughness.

ColoreScience has developed a pure mineral line of powder sunscreens. It’s a sunscreen of adequate strength that is easy and beautiful. Along with the skin powder, ColoreScience makes various mineral sunscreens for eyes and lips as well.

"Simply being natural does not always mean the substance is effective."

SK: Besides products like these, what should every woman be doing in her skin care routine to prevent the effects of aging?

SVD: The use of sunscreen cannot be overemphasized. UV radiation is the most significant, preventable cause of skin aging. Antioxidants should be a part of every woman’s routine. Antioxidants help protect the skin from what is called “oxidative stress,” which is known to cause aging. Oxidative stress is the result of UV radiation, toxins such as air pollution, and of course, smoking. Antioxidants work by absorbing free radicals produced by these toxins, which attack our bodies.

SK: Some women like the all-natural route when it comes to their skin. Can that be just as effective in anti-aging?

SVD: Natural methods can be effective, but research and scientific studies have given us some ways to boost what nature has given us, especially when it comes to antioxidants. I advise [women] to look at the studies that back up whatever claims are made by the company. Simply being natural does not always mean the substance is effective. Vitamin C, a fairly weak antioxidant, can lose all of its value if not prepared properly, yet it would still be considered a “natural antioxidant.”

SK: What ingredients should we avoid in our skin care products?

Tip: Look for “non-comedogenic” on the label if you tend to break out.

SVD: There is not a specific “black list” of products that dermatologists warn against, mainly because problem ingredients have been weeded out over time. Some active ingredients may be a problem for acne prone women but may be beneficial for a woman with extremely dry skin, so it is wise not to generalize.

SK: Are there any quirky beauty tips you like to recommend?

SVD: Apply products with active ingredients on slightly damp skin in order to enhance absorption and get better results. If you have more than one “active product” to apply, go from thinner to thicker formulas, waiting five minutes between layers. That means: serums first, followed by gels, lotions, creams and ointments. NEVER mix two products together unless they are meant to be used together. This may alter the effects of both active ingredients.

SK: What is the number one piece of advice you give your clients when it comes to anti-aging?

SVD: Sunscreen, sunscreen, more sunscreen and always smile. Aging is inevitable — we might as well look great while we do.
