Usually when I find myself in a hat, it's time I should be making that call for a hair appointment. I’ve seen a lot of hats walking into the salon lately. It's usually clients needing their color done, but it's also the season. It's breezy, and scarves and hats just add that finishing touch to a great cozy look! Find out how to get skin and hair healthy for November.
Fall woman

skin care and haircare needs

Usually when I find myself in a hat, it's time to call for a hair appointment. I’ve seen a lot of hats walking into the salon lately. It's usually clients needing their color done, but it's also the season. It's breezy, and scarves and hats just add that finishing touch to a great cozy look!

Find out how to get skin and hair healthy for November.

Root touch ups

I'm concerned with how long people are waiting to get their roots touched up. Your color will look much better if you're touching it up after a fourth of an inch of re-growth. Wait any longer and you'll get color bands . When it comes to highlights, you can go six to eight weeks until you need a touch up. It depends on whether you're still rocking the ombre or not.

Flawless Face BookBlemish-free face

So how about that face? Now that the suntans have faded and blemished skin with dry spots is creeping in, I've found the answer! It's the Flawless Face Book by Laura Mercier. It comes in three shades — Nude, Sand and Tan.

I use this on the host of the Talking Dead Chris Hardwick and his guests on the show. Trust me, once you get this on your face, it will become your favorite product! It performs and gives a flawless complexion.

Phyto Smoothing MaskSmooth your tresses

Now, for your hair! You have your color done, and you have flawless skin, but your hair is feeling dry and unruly from summer damage. There are so many remedies to choose from, right? Well, here are the best tools and masks to get the job done.

For an express smoothing mask, try this Phyto Smoothing Mask. It will revitalize your hair and add shine. Just leave it in for 30 minutes, wrap in cling film, and then rinse. The Phyto mask is fantastic with its sulphate-free formulas and safe for all skin and scalp conditions.

WELLA contura clippersYour man needs help, too

Is your boyfriend's neck hair driving you insane? Get him these WELLA Contura clippers. They are mini clippers that are cordless and great for traveling. Not enough? You can also get him the WELLA Xpert, which is great for beards and moustache trims, as well.

By now, you've picked up on some fun tips for this next month! Keep your eye out for Jamie Lee Curtis playing Zooey Deschanel's mom on New Girl on FOX. It's the Thanksgiving episode, and I cut Jamie's cute 'do for that episode.

Survival beauty: Don't fear hair loss

Women think hair is the mecca of femininity — we’ve hid behind it when nervous on a first date, drastically colored it after a breakup and put it up in a bun for our wedding. But without it, we’re even stronger.

Women think hair is the mecca of femininity — we’ve hid behind it when nervous on a first date, drastically colored it after a breakup and put it up in a bun for our wedding. But without it, we’re even stronger.

Experts answer
your fears

When a woman finds out her hair has to go, her mind is flooded with questions and concerns on her hair future. SheKnows and their circle of experts want to make it easier for you to handle this side effect of cancer treatment. Hair Club Medical Group transplant physician Jeff Donovan and stylist Donald Arditi answer common questions you may have:

Do all cancer treatments cause hair loss? Why?

As most people know, many traditional cancer treatments, namely chemotherapy and radiation therapy, have the potential to cause hair loss. That’s because chemotherapy targets actively growing cells in the body — cancer cells and other cells, including hair follicles.

How many patients experience hair loss as a result?

Overall, about 65 percent of patients receiving chemotherapy experience some level of hair loss. While not all chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss, the likelihood is greater among patients receiving two or more drugs versus those receiving only a single drug. It all depends on the type of treatment and amount of chemotherapy or radiation used.

Is hair loss due to cancer treatment always temporary or is it sometimes permanent?

Hair loss after chemotherapy typically begins within one to three weeks and is complete within one to two months. The hair grows back usually within four months. In rare situations, patients may not fully regain the same hair density as they had before cancer treatment. This phenomenon is known as permanent chemotherapy induced alopecia . Certain drugs and treatments are more likely to cause PCIA than others. For instance, radiation to the brain has been known to sometimes cause permanent loss.

Does the hair grow back differently?

The new, re-growing hair may be a different texture and may even be a different color . It’s not uncommon for the hair to be curlier than it was before chemotherapy. Most of the time, however, the hair returns to its normal texture and color.

Is there anything one can do to prevent or counter the hair loss?

Cryotherapy or scalp cooling can sometimes be used to reduce the chance of developing hair loss. Scalp cooling is not used for all patients undergoing chemotherapy, but rather for patients receiving specific medications or fighting specific cancers. Topical minoxidil can also reduce the total number of weeks that a patient will experience hair loss after chemotherapy and will speed up the rate of hair growth following cancer therapies.

Aside from medical treatments, what are some easy ways to disguise and care for thinning hair?

Be gentle. Dry your hair with your hands and fingers, minimize using high heat settings on the blow dryer, and avoid using a brush when blow drying. Use a diffuser instead to create fullness when drying. The less tension you put on your hair, the less risk of premature breakage or damage.

What products are best for thinning hair?

Minimize the use of waxes, gels, creams and pastes. A lot of these products will weigh your hair down, making it oily and revealing thin areas. A light styling product that creates volume in the hair, like a volumizing mousse, is best. Volumizing shampoos and conditioners are also highly recommended. To keep hair strong and clear of buildup, one may opt for a clarifying shampoo and protein treatment, but only once a week at most.

What should stylists know?

First, inform any stylists ahead of time about your health situation and treatment, so they can be proactive and start handling your hair with precautionary measures as early as possible. Avoid chemical services, such as permanent color treatments, perms and straighteners, which can lead to premature breakage and hair loss. Request gentle, alcohol-free cleansers and conditioners, and opt for air drying instead of high-heat dryers. In terms of your cut, a shorter style tends to make hair look thicker and fuller.

Beauty detox: Post-party skin-saving tips

Holiday season skin tips

Party season is almost upon us. As much as we love a good time, all those late nights and seasonal cocktails can wreak havoc on our skin. Rather than risk not looking your best at a must-attend event, do what you can to detox your skin and revive your complexion between parties.

Drink lots of water

Make it your goal to drink a glass of water between every alcoholic beverage to stay hydrated and avoid getting too tipsy. It’s also a good idea to start your post-party day with a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon rather than coffee. The H2O-citrus combo will help flush the toxins out of your body, which you need if you’ve over-indulged. Plus, maintaining adequate hydration levels will help keep skin supple and looking fresh despite your extra two cocktails the night before.

Pamper skin with a mask

Tired skin is lackluster skin. Invest in a hydrating mask to get your complexion ready for yet another party. Best bet: Apply your mask as you lie back in a hot bath enhanced with a sea salt bath soak, which works to pull toxins from your body and sooth tired muscles. When you emerge, you’ll feel better overall and your skin will thank you. Finish with your favorite moisturizer in a holiday-ready scent.

Add a serum

Whether you want younger-looking skin, brighter skin, healthier skin or just extra hydration, there’s a serum that can help intensify your skin care routine. They're packed with potent ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamins and plant extracts all formulated with smaller molecules so they better penetrate to deeper layers of the skin. If your post-party skin needs a pick-me-up, think about adding a serum to your arsenal of complexion perfecting products.

Load up on healthy foods

While we love holiday goodies and do our fair share of seasonal indulging, it’s a good idea to try and eat as healthy as possible between parties. What you eat actually affects the look of your skin and the more fruits and veggies you consume, the better your complexion will be. Stock up on leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits and other red, green and yellow items for a maximum antioxidant and nutrient boost.

Getting gorgeous doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, there are tons of great products out there that won’t leave a hole in your wallet. If you want to save on beauty this fall and find products that work, we have you covered.

Boots Botanics Skin Brightening Deep Clean Gel

Brightening cleanser

We’ve tried a lot of skin cleansing products , and while many are ultra-pricey, we’re partial to one that’s a little gentler on our wallet: Boots Botanics Skin Brightening Deep Clean Gel . The gentle but effective gel makes quick work of makeup, deep cleans pores and leaves skin refreshed — all for well under $10.

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm

Soothing lip balm

It’s important not to neglect your lips when it comes to skin care, and we don’t go anywhere without EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm tucked into our bag. The sphere shape makes it easy to apply, plus it’s a 95 percent organic and 100 percent natural way to keep our lips luscious.

The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oi

Blemish treatment

If you’re looking for a gentler, more natural way to bust blemishes, we suggest giving The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil a try . The tiny bottle packs quite a punch when it comes to keeping skin clear. Simply apply at the first sign of a blemish to minimize the size and duration of any pesky pimples.

Simple Smoothing Facial Scrub

Facial scrub

Keeping skin smooth and glowing doesn’t have to be daunting, but it should involve exfoliating on a regular basis. If you don’t want to spend a fortune, a great complexion-perfecting choice is Simple Smoothing Facial Scrub . The gentle, unscented scrub brightens and smoothes dull skin.

Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer

Moisturizer

With the huge selection of moisturizers out there to choose from, deciding what to buy can be tough. Rather than overspend on something that doesn’t work, opt for something simple but effective, like Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer . The non-greasy formula contains antioxidants and SPF 15.

Pure Ambition Avocado/Oatmeal Facial Clay Masque

Skin mask

Pamper skin and give yourself a mini at-home facial with a mask suited to your skin type. We like Pure Ambition Avocado/Oatmeal Facial Clay Masque , which is a budget-friendly multitasking mask. It purges pores, cleanses skin and soothes and nourishes thanks to the avocado.

Get out of your style comfort zone: 5 Ways to switch things up

0

It can be surprisingly easy to get into a style rut. We like what we like and end up buying and wearing variations of the same things year after year. While it is good to know what looks good on you, it can get boring never trying anything new. We’re here to help you expand your fashion comfort zone — and look good doing it.

woman shipping for heels

Try a new trend

Are your at-work and weekend outfits starting to look like uniforms? If you answered yes to those questions, it’s time to work some fresh trends into your look. While we’re not advocates of putting too much stock into fleeting fashion trends that come and go ultra-fast, it is important to keep your wardrobe current, especially if you’ve been gravitating toward the same type of outfits for years. This fall and winter, think about adding a pair of printed jeans, a leather piece and something in this season’s must-have hue: oxblood.

Get inspired

Pushing past your style comfort zone can sometimes be as easy as looking for inspiration and then following up on whatever it is that caught your eye. Flip through your favorite fashion magazines, head to Pinterest to check out style-savvy pinners, take a peek through the closets of fashionable friends and pay attention to what people are wearing as you go about your day. See something you like? Jot it down and then go seek it out.

Add statement accessories

Don’t feel like getting too bold too soon? You don’t have to stray too far from your usual fashion mainstays to make a noticeable difference. Rather than cultivating a whole new look, you can push the style envelope with accessories. A pair of printed heels, a vibrant statement necklace or even a colorful scarf can make a huge impact on your outfit without you having to wear something you just don’t feel right in.

Embrace bold color

Color is a gal’s best friend when it comes to breaking down style barriers and doing something a little out of the ordinary. Love pencil skirts? Switch things up by buying one in forest green or plum. Live in denim on weekends? Trade your standard blue variety for something in red. The key is to take items you already love wearing but pick up a few in fun colors to breathe new life into your wardrobe.

Get a wardrobe consultation

Whether from a trusted friend, co-worker, your fashion plate sister or a professional, having someone help pick out clothes for you can be an eye-opening experience. We only see the items we’re used to wearing, but someone else will have a totally different perspective on what would look good on us. Try a few things on you might not normally wear. You might be surprised by how much you like them.

Woman putting on powder

Feeling rushed in the mornings? So are we, which is why we wanted to come up with some simple ways to save time — and our sanity. Start your day off right by using our best beauty shortcuts.

Timesaving beauty tips

Shower the night before

If you can swing it, skip your a.m. shower in favor of an evening scrub down. Dry and style your hair , put into a low, loose ponytail when you head to bed, and in the morning, simply shake it out, mist with water and run the blow dryer over it to revitalize your locks.

Perk up yesterday’s blowout

Your hair style from the day before isn’t necessarily a lost cause the next day. Dry shampoo can be a simple way to save time on rushed mornings. Sprinkle or spray on your scalp, brush through gently and shake hair out to revive your style before you head out for the day.

Skip foundation

Putting on a full face of makeup takes time, sometimes a lot of time. So when you’re strapped for any extra minutes you can find, don’t even look at the foundation bottle. Instead, opt for time-saving BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Both products are easy to apply and offer natural-looking coverage. Add a dusting of translucent powder to combat shine if you need to.

Focus on one feature

Rather than waste time using various makeup techniques on your eyes, lips and cheeks, focus your attention on one feature. That way you’re playing up an asset, without tacking time onto your morning routine.

6 Beauty tips to simplify your morning>>

Use multitasking products

Products that serve more than one function are a busy woman’s dream. We suggest loading up on shower gel that can also be used on face and hair, the aforementioned BB cream or face wash that also exfoliates.

Choose outfits in advance

The amount of time most of us waste standing in front of the closet in frustration could probably equal an extra 45 minutes in bed. Rather than rush, choose an outfit the night before — shoes, accessories and all. That way there’s no need to stare blankly at your wardrobe when you could be drinking a much-needed coffee.

The world doesn't have to know about the extra piece of pumpkin pie you ate for Thanksgiving. Cover up any lumps and bumps flawlessly with these flattering fashion picks.

Leggings and a comfy tunic

When the weather is chilly and I just want to be comfy, I love to throw on a pair of flattering leggings and a big 'ole tunic or sweater. Since leggings don't offer as much support as zip-up jeans, I turn to ones with more support and shaping. Finish off the look with some comfy flats and you're ready to chill out.

Leggings and a comfy tunic

Flexees Fat Free Dressing Leggings $25, Gap Colorblock Tunic $44, Ballasox Stretch Flat $60

Flowing dress and shaping undies

Tight dresses and the day after Thanksgiving don't exactly go hand in hand! But don't take a few weeks off your dress wardrobe without a little backup, ladies. During those first few days after Thanksgiving indulgences, opt for flowing dresses to flatter your shape, and get a little extra backup with shaping undies. Finish your look off with a pair of tights and a chic pair of heels and you're good to go.

Flowing dress and shaping undies

Old Navy Belted 3/4 Sleeve Dress $25, Bali Hi-Waist Thigh Slimmer $40,
XhilarationTights $5, Jessica Simpson Waleo Pumps $89

Sheer blouse and jeans

Sheer blouses are one of my favorite fall fashion trends, and they're also pretty figure flattering. If you want a bit more post-Thanksgiving coverage this month, don a shaping tank top under your sheer blouse. Finish the look off with dark wash jeans and a pair of fall's hottest booties, and everyone will be focusing on your fab outfit, not your flab.

Black Friday is days away and we have a feeling there are going to be a lot of tired ladies out there early Friday morning. Don't hit the sales before checking out our Black Friday beauty preparation tips!

Black friday beauty preparation tips

Avoid a hairy situation

Will you shop on Black Friday

Black Friday

The last thing you want to think about at the crack of dawn this Black Friday is what to do with your hair! To avoid a hair disaster the morning of, prepare the night before.

Instead of waking up in the morning and washing your locks, wash the night before and throw in a little texturizing cream — we like Bb. Texture Hair Dressing Crème from Bumble and Bumble — to create gorgeous texture for the next day.

Or, if your hair is dry Thanksgiving night and you can hardly summon the energy to drag yourself into bed , braid your hair to create loose waves. Secure with snag-free elastics like Goody Ouchless Elastics and you'll be good to go on Black Friday!

If your hair is looking a little worse for the wear in the morning, a great go-to beauty product is Fresh Start Smoothing Dry Shampoo from Tresemme . Spray it in your hair and look fresh and clean in under 5 minutes.

Nail the deals with ease

We know that long, fake nails are fun to wear, but they're also a pain in the butt when you're grabbing deal after deal on Black Friday! Avoid any broken nail trauma this Black Friday and go natural with your nails. You don't have to forgo polish, ladies. In fact, we recommend painting your nails for Black Friday in this pretty Heart of Gold shade from Topshop .

Make shopping bags the only bags you're holding

Black Friday leaves us beauties very little time to apply a full face of makeup and some of us are lucky if we can even manage to swipe on some concealer after missing our early morning wake-up call. Spare yourself a few minutes of concealer application by prepping your peepers. Avoiding salt can help reduce dark circles and so can some good old-fashioned shuteye! Do yourself a favor for Black Friday and hit the sheets a tad early, avoid late night leftover noshing and consider popping on some soothing eye pads like Recover-E Cucumber Eye Pads before you go to bed.

3 Trends we loved before they were popular... again

Fashion revival

The style spotters at SheKnows are always watching for the next big thing, and sometimes what we spot has already been around the style block. In this trend report, we’re sharing three trends that happen to be coming back from the past — with a vengeance.

Oversize sweaters

Big is back and just in time for the inevitable drop in temperature. What better way to stay cozy than in an extra-large cardi or slouchy sweater? Whether with leggings, long skirts or skinny jeans, bigger is better this season. Look for chunky knit, bold buttons and graphic patterns, or do as we do and just borrow from your boyfriend’s stock of sweaters.

Our pick: Stay toasty and on trend with this oversize plaid cardigan .

90s-inspired denim

'90s-inspired denim

Rebecca Taylor and See by Chloe both showed off some blast-from-the-past denim during fashion week, but we’ve had our style-eye on the loose fitting, faded jeans from our teen years for a while. But don’t fret — this season’s incarnation of '90s denim is much more fashion-forward. Think of these jeans as an update to the baggy boyfriend styles we’ve already been sporting for the past few seasons.

Our pick: Test out the trend by wearing a pair of these light wash boyfriend jeans .

Ruffles

Ruffles

Believe it or not, that '80s party dress staple is back for fall, but it’s not as scary as you think. This season’s ruffles are more ravishing than retro-overkill and they’re much more toned down and stylish this time around. Whether you opt for a shirt with ruffle detailing or a skirt with a slight touch of fashionable flounce, get ready for a ruffle revival.

Our pick: Pair this simple ivory bow ruffle top with dark skinnies and riding boots for an easy-wearing way to sport the trend .

Friday's Fashion Fails: Jessica Biel and Naomi Watts

0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Jessica Biel and Naomi Watts' fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel, aka Mrs. Justin Timberlake, is so not bringing sexy back in this Oscar de la Renta ensemble during the Hitchcock premiere in NYC. The embellished tunic and pants combo seems more appropriate for a grandma's big night on the town than a Hollywood starlet's Manhattan movie screening.

Sequins don't always equal stylish, Jess. The patchwork pattern of this top reminds us of a quilt and the whole outfit together looks like fancy pajamas. The head to toe gray getup is putting us to sleep, too. Zzzzz...

Finally, what's up with the open toed sandals? It's November, so we're not sure why she has her toes exposed to the chilly NYC temps. Maybe she just got a pedicure and didn't want to smudge her nails? Beats us.

The final verdict? Jess is a total babe with an amazing bod, so we can't understand why she insists on dressing so frumpy. Vamp it up, please and thanks!

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts

Watt the hell is this? Naomi Watts wore Tom Ford head to toe for The Impossible premiere in London. Speaking of impossible, how can anyone pull off this completely ridiculous looking little black dress with the crazy oversized sleeves?

Has Naomi been shopping in Vanessa Hudgens' closet lately, who recently rocked super long sleeves as well? Pairing the massive, flowing sleeves on this creation with the black pointy shoes  looks downright witchy. The only accessory Naomi needs is a broomstick to complete this ensemble!

The final verdict? The LBD is a fashionista's classic wardrobe staple for a reason: because it's timeless and effortlessly chic. Don't mess with a good thing by adding tons of fabric to the arms of what would have been perfectly fine on its own.

As if stress, genetics and hormones don’t work against our skin enough, winter is fast approaching. So while you’re out stocking up on those new boots and comfy cute sweaters, don’t forget to give your skin some lovin’ as well! As if stress, genetics and hormones don’t work against our skin enough, winter is fast approaching. So while you’re out stocking up on those new boots and comfy cute sweaters, don’t forget to give your skin some lovin’ as well!

Skin care for the changing seasons

Dannielli Marcelino, Suddenly Slimmer’s licensed medical esthetician and certified laser technician, has a few helpful tips for making this transition as smooth as possible.

Why zits happen between seasons

According to beauty experts, when your skin is transitioning from summer to fall, it has to work harder to regulate moisture for the much drier season, in turn causing more breakouts. While on the surface your skin is being dried out because of the cooler air, it is still trying to produce the same amount of moisture as in the summer beneath the surface. This causes your skin's natural oils to be trapped beneath the surface, causing the increase in acne.

The last thing most think to do in the midst of a breakout is switch to gentler products. “People have a tendency to be aggressive the minute they see a zit forming,” says Marcelino. But Marcelino says that in the transition from the scorching hot summer to the crisp, dry fall, it is important to use nourishing products. Marcelino says to stay away from the drying products as well as any containing SD alcohol 40 or sodium laureth sulfate. These ingredients aren’t ideal for already-dry factors.

People have a tendency to be aggressive the minute they see a zit forming

The nitty gritty

Little factors can make a huge difference and this holds true for our skin as well. Changing your pillow cases more often will wash away the bacteria and oils that accumulate and in turn cause breakouts. Also, washing your linens with a gentle detergent can help keep your skin free from irritation. Oh, and actually sleeping on those freshly washed pillow cases will help your complexion as well! Do your best to get the recommended eight hours of sleep a night.

Don’t over treat

It is hard to resist slathering a nasty red bump in your go-to zit creams, but Marcelino warns to use discretion with any over-the-counter acne medications. These can most definitely dry out your skin which will cause even more damage in the end.

exfoliantExfoliate

Since dead skin cells are a factor in these seasonal breakouts, unclogging pores is that much more important this time of year. Marcelino recommends chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid and fruit enzymes as well as physical exfoliants. Also, getting a regular professional facial will prove useful, according to Marcelino.

All in all, Marcelino stands by her advice of just keeping your routine simple. “If you use gentle products and maintain a good, simple routine using sunscreen regularly and incorporating chemical peels/exfoliants, your skin will transition smoothly,” she said.

A Bright Idea: Amorepacific Luminous Effect Brightening Serum & Masque (Review)

Beauty trends from Asia have always been the rage in some way, shape or form. From lengthening mascaras to brightening creams, Asia has given the Western world much gorgeous bounty. We put Amorepacific's latest Luminous Effect Brightening Serum to the test. Read our review below to see how it measured up to its price tag.
Luminous Effect Brightening Serum

Get brighter, clearer skin

Beauty trends from Asia have always been the rage in some way, shape or form. From lengthening mascaras to brightening creams, Asia has given the Western world much gorgeous bounty. We put Amorepacific's latest Luminous Effect Brightening Serum to the test. Read our review below to see how it measured up to its price tag.

From BB creams to water-based moisturizers, Asia has long been an area that women looked up to for their beauty inspirations. Skin-lightening creams are extremely popular with Asian women, and many makeup items, including powders, toners and masks, have some form of lightening agent.

The whitening obsession was driven mainly by a desire from women to reduce heavy pigmentation, and to ensure their skin stayed as soft, flawless and white as a baby's. Amorepacific's new Luminous Effect Brightening Serum and Masque pays homage to these trends.

Amorepacific's new Meladefying Complex, a blend of Asian botanicals, was used to create this serum. The blend includes Milk Thistle, Ginko Leaf, Orange Peel, Magnolia and Lonicera Japonica, which work to inhibit the excessive melanin in the skin. The idea behind this blend is to target the existing melasma to create a brighter, more radiant complexion. The botanicals create a fine net that promises to envelop the skin with a protective veil that boosts moisture levels and helps increase the rate of absorption.

The blend is supposed to work so well that even in the face of environmental stressors, the melanocytes are desensitized, so that melanin is produced only in smaller quantities. And the serum itself is highly concentrated, so it delivers the Meladefying Complex deep into the skin.

After applying the light, non-tacky serum, I was pleased to see how well my skin responded in terms of radiance: It brightened the complexion up immediately, just as the bottle promised. The moisture levels were visibly improved as well. The bottle indicates one to two pumps of the Luminous Effect morning and evening onto cleansed and toned skin. It's also a smart idea to reapply on heavily pigmented areas and to pat the skin for optimal absorption.

The serum retails at $220 for one ounce and it's definitely on the pricey side. However, I have not encountered too many serums that are this light, concentrated, moisturizing and brightening in one convenient bottle. The Luminous Effect Brightening Masque retails for $120 for a set of six, and they are a true luxury. Each sheet is a highly concentrated whitening treatment, and is equivalent to one bottle of serum, which in itself is nothing short of incredible. It's also light as gossamer, made from a soft fiber material and hugs every area of the skin beautifully. The best way to apply this mask is to use right after cleansing and toning, and let it sit for 10 minutes before you remove it. You can follow with a moisturizer and serum if you need the extra whitening and moisture. It's best to use the masque one to two times weekly.

The Future Response Age Defense Cream, another new launch and perfect for environmental skin aging, is a good follow up to the serum, and retails for $195.

The brand has been busy with other launches too. The new Advanced Time Response Intensive Skin Renewal Ampoule Set is the latest breakthrough skin care launch with a new formula which taps into the power of concentrated green tea. Green tea has always been beneficial to skin, whether it's ingested or applied topically. The chief benefits of green tea in a topical treatment include increased collagen density and reduction of cell decomposition. Each ampoule is active and consists of two individual vials mixed together right before application, so it's really potent. You may balk at the $550 price tag, but quality always comes with a price tag.

Get steals, not scammed

Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year! With great sales some of the amazing deals seem too good to be true. Follow these tips to protect yourself from scams while shopping.

Don't be a shopping fool

Great designer goods come at a cost, but even higher one is when you find out you bought a counterfeit. Shopping online can be tricky but don't let yourself be deceived. Check out these tips and you'll log out of Cyber Monday with great deals and steals!

  • Only buy from authentic websites. You may be tempted to consider low prices only. But if the vendor's site has spelling and grammar mistakes, an amateurish design or a contact form without a legitimate address, email and/or phone number, then proceed with caution.
  • Do your homework. Browse before you buy. Find the products in stores before shopping online so you know exactly what an authentic item looks like. With apparel and accessories, become familiar with logo placement, stitching, country of origin and hardware on the pieces you know are legitimate. You will be better prepared to spot a fake.
  • If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. A few dollars difference is just good bargain hunting, considerable difference in price means you're probably not getting the real deal.
  • Be wary of online auction sites. If the seller is only showing a stock image of the product and no actual photos they have taken, it is most likely a scam. Also look out for the words "factory seconds." For many designers, factory seconds don't exist because they destroy those products that don't match up to the brand's standards.
  • Search engines are your friend: See what people are saying about the website by searching the name of the website along with the words "scam" or "review." If other people are skeptical, you should be too. Also check on the site for a padlock image. This usually indicates the site is verified and secure for safe credit card transactions.

Woman with dandruff

Flakes be gone!

We're partnering up with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your most pressing hair questions. Up today? Justine Piecuch, a stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, is showing us how to get rid of the dreaded dandruff.

Your question

"I can’t get rid of my dandruff! Help!"

Justine's answer!

Unfortunately as hair stylists, we aren't able to diagnose the actual problem due to the fact that we are not doctors. Most of the time we know what it is, but don't have the ability to give you what you need. If you've been battling this for quite some time, I would highly recommend visiting your doctor and getting a recommendation on a dermatologist before you try anything yourself.

There are many pills and creams to treat the issue. If you go, and they say there's nothing wrong and you actually don't have clinical dandruff, try these following things to help a dry scalp. But please visit the doctor first!

  1. Shampoo less often to prevent a dry scalp in the first place. Also, try to avoid hot water in the shower, as this can dry out your scalp even more.
  2. Over the counter dandruff products will not help you; they will actually make things worse. Ask your doctor for the right product to help you.
  3. You exfoliate your skin, and your scalp needs the same TLC! Brushing your scalp with a boar's hair brush can help a dry scalp.
  4. Your dry scalp could actually be a result of an allergic reaction to a product. To find out, lay off all products you're using and slowly try to bring them back to your regimen to see if you notice a difference.
  5. A dry scalp can result from product buildup, so make sure you're scrubbing your scalp well when shampooing to remove any product buildup. This usually occurs in the crown and the front of the head where people sometimes over distribute products.

Shoe shopping: Pumps by heel height

0

Picking out a pair of pumps can be tricky. They come in several different heights and which pair you choose depends on what you plan to wear them with. To help you create a versatile collection of heels for every occasion, we’ve picked out some of the prettiest pumps out there by heel height.

Low heel

Low heel pumps are easier to wear than their sky high counterparts but they’re no less stylish. They look just as chic paired with a pencil skirt as they do with jeans and a cozy sweater. If you really want to get noticed, opt for something printed or with a patent sheen.

cute kitten heel pumps

fuchsia patent leather pair

Our picks: Go graphic with a pair of cute kitten heel pumps featuring an all over black and white print , or opt for something more colorful with this fun fuchsia patent leather pair .

Mid-heel

Mid-heel pumps are the classic height — not too low, not too high — and perfect for work. They pair well with just about anything, from trousers to shift dresses. Along with basic black , for this season think about suede, rich tones like plum and oxblood and interesting textures like snakeskin or mock croc.

ochre mid-heel suede pumps

soft caramel brown

Our picks: Make a serious statement when you step out in these vibrant ochre mid-heel suede pumps , or keep things more neutral with this leather pair in soft caramel brown .

High heel

Going out and want to get noticed? You’re going to need a high heel pump to add mega height and create a long, lean silhouette. Whether you wear them with dark denim and a semi-sheer blouse or an A-line mini, the higher the heel, the more heads you’ll turn. Look for hidden platforms for added stability, stiletto heel or subtle extras like a cap toe or exposed back zip.

sleek black patent pumps

get-noticed suede pumps

Our picks: Add a sexy spin to any outfit by stepping out in these sleek black patent pumps with a covered stiletto heel . Or, for something similar but a bit edgier, opt for these get-noticed suede pumps with gold studs at the toe .

Simple conditioning guidelines

Not all conditioners are created equal, so matching your conditioner to your hair type is the key to great hair. We’ve outlined some simple guidelines and brought our favorite suggestions for everyone along the hair spectrum!

All-Around Amazing: Redken All Soft Conditioner

All-around amazing: Redken All Soft Conditioner

This little golden beauty tops our list for the overall best conditioner. Many agree, as it has been listed three times as the Reader’s Choice Conditioner in Allure magazine. Avocado oil and silk amino acid leave hair feeling ultra soft, especially at the ends where conditioning matters most.

Damage Un-Doer: Bumble and Bumble Mending Conditioner

Damage un-doer: Bumble and Bumble Mending Conditioner

This Bumble and Bumble miracle worker is just as the label says: “for the damaged.” The rich conditioner was designed specifically for those who regularly color, straighten or perm their hair. Using this regularly will quickly make even the driest, coarsest hair smooth and manageable.

Cool for Colored: Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Conditioner

Cool for colored: Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Conditioner

This one-of-a-kind conditioner offers the ultimate in color care. Joico has designed this to protect the B-layer, which is hair's first line of defense against damage and color loss. Damaged hair will do a 180 and you’ll have soft, smooth hair with vibrant color to boot.

Top Dandruff Fighter: Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Conditioner

Top dandruff fighter: Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Conditioner

Heat can cause other head issues besides over-drying and flattening hair. Like the rest of our skin, scalps can become too dry from winter heat making our heads itchy and dry which means flakes and discomfort. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Conditioner is made with a unique Australian Tea Tree oil that provides serious hydration for the scalp, keeping hair healthy from the roots to the tips.

Eco-Friendly: Neuma Moisture Conditioner

Eco-friendly: Neuma Moisture Conditioner

Neuma is leading the way in eco-friendly hair care. Each Neuma product contains only renewable, beneficial plant-based ingredients. This conditioner contains a combination of plant extracts and essential oils to maximize color hue, vibrancy and longevity while protecting strands from sun and environmental damages.

Va-Va-Volumizing: Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume Conditioner

Va-va-volumizing: Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume Conditioner

Not all conditioners will weigh fine hair down. The key is finding a light formula that will give your hair a boost, rather than making it appear limp. Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume Conditioner is sheer, providing serious conditioning power without the weight.

Mega Moisturizing: Oribe Ultra Rich Conditioner

Mega moisturizing: Oribe Ultra Rich Conditioner

Oribe brings the ultimate in hair luxury straight to your shower. This rich conditioner is formulated without parabens or sodium chloride and moisturizes to the max without weighing hair down. You’ll feel chic just holding the bottle.

Crazy Curl Friendly: Curly Sexy Hair Moisturizing Conditioner

Crazy curl-friendly: Curly Sexy Hair Moisturizing Conditioner

Keeping hair moisturized is especially important for curly girls, so using the right conditioner is key. All the moisture will help soften the curls, allowing hair to be more flexible. Curly Sexy Hair Moisturizing Conditioner is sulfate-free and contains soy and wheat proteins to give curls the extra juice they need.

Are you conditioning correctly?

Curious about conditioner best practices? After shampooing, squeeze excess water out of your hair to allow your conditioner to penetrate into the hair shaft. Think of your hair like a sponge. If there is excess water taking up space in the hair shaft, the conditioner can’t get in there to do its job. Finally, try rinsing your conditioner with a blast of cool water to give your tresses some extra shine power.
