Stylish and recyclable Halloween costumes

$

Ditch the days of spending hundreds on a one-time Halloween costume and invest in fashionable pieces you can incorporate into your wardrobe all year long. The unalluring pre-packaged costumes that every girl sports at parties are overrated, and honestly, not impressive. Challenge your creativity and think ahead to future outfits. Here are five current and iconic Halloween costumes that make great staple pieces in anyone's wardrobe.

Blair Waldorf — Gossip Girl

With Blair it’s all about texture and bright colors — the only darkness in the Upper East Side’s favorite girl is Chuck Bass. Here are five essentials you’ll need to bring your preppy style to a sexy Manhattan level for Halloween.

Blair Waldorf – Gossip Girl

  • Tights — Red, white, black, blue — Blair has pulled them all off. Stop by H&M and pick up the pair that goes best with your dress or textured skirt.
  • Textured skirt — Texture, texture, color and texture. Blair’s skirts are officially iconic. Pick a versatile, bright piece you can wear with a white or colored blouse, like these gorgeous wool pencil skirts from J. Crew.
  • Heels — Make a statement. Go colorful if you can, but stay true to your skirt or dress with neutral if needed. We think Blair and your wardrobe would love J. Crew’s mint-green suede pumps, that also come in other NYC-appropriate colors.
  • Headband — Blair brought headbands back in vogue, and you can’t achieve her legendary rich look without one. Forever 21 has a beautiful pearlescent bow headband for under $10.
  • Collared shirt — Pick out a collared shirt or blouse you know you’ll wear again. Blair would love this polka dot sleeveless top from Topshop. Tuck it into your skirt, curl your hair and congratulations, you’re Blair Waldorf.

Holly Golightly — Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Holly Golightly’s little black dress is timeless and iconic — a must for all our wardrobes. Throw on any piece from this famous outfit when you want to ramp up your glamour and practice classic style beyond Halloween night.

Holly Gollightly – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

  • Little black dress — Thankfully the most important part is easiest to find, but finding the one that speaks to you can take some time. We recommend this versatile sleeveless “Look the Part” dress from ModCloth.
  • Statement necklace — Diamonds and pearls worth millions of dollars would be fabulous, but luckily for the more budget-aware, there is Forever 21. The store is perfect for costume jewelry that sparkles. This emerald cut collar necklace is dazzling. Feeling extra Audrey? Pair with some pearlescent pearls.
  • Costume earrings — Ears have to sparkle too. All eyes will be on you with these sparkling drop earrings.
  • Tiara — No Holly Golightly is complete without a tiara.
  • Black heels — Five-inch platform pumps aren’t allowed, as Audrey practiced grace and poise. This basic heel court shoe from Zara is tasteful and chic.

Zooey Deschanel — New Girl

Everyone will recognize your costume if you dress up as the adorable, stylish and quirky Jess from Fox’s New Girl. The look is easy to achieve as well, and who knows? Maybe you’ll decide to incorporate a little Zooey into your style afterwards.

New Girl – Zooey Deschanel

  • Solid fitted and flared dress — We’re banking Jess would pick a bold and bright style when it comes to her flirty dresses. Rumor has it she would buy this lovely cherry twist rib skater dress from Topshop in a quirky heartbeat.
  • Black rim glasses — Go conspicuous and extra-geeky when it comes to eyewear. Hot Topic has a great pair for only a few dollars. They make an edgy accessory post-Halloween.
  • Dark brunette wig with bangs — Those bangs and messy hair are everything when it comes to becoming Zooey Deschanel. This one is the epitome of Jess.
  • Heels — We say Blair and Jess would share shoes if they knew each other. These J. Crew mint-green suede pumps work for the New Girl star too.

Anna Wintour — Vogue editor and the real “devil” who wears Prada

Your fashionable friends will recognize you and your oblivious friends will want to be you. The inspiration behind Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada and September Issue star is a lesser known celebrity but makes an equally fabulous costume. The most fashionable woman in the world has a surprisingly achievable look.

Anna Wintour – Vogue editor and the real “devil” who wears Prada

  • Short wig with blunt bangs — She has had her signature short haircut with blunt bangs since being a teenager. It’s iconic and never changes, but few can pull it off. Here is a wig that will do the trick with a little trim.
  • Dark sunglasses — So Anna, so cheap.
  • Structured patterned dress — She loves patterns and structure and always sticks to a posh dress. We can see Anna in this chic floral number from H&M.
  • Statement necklace — We would pick another piece from Forever 21, but Anna doesn’t do cheap. It’s easy to see this gorgeous statement necklace from J. Crew around Anna’s neck — the woman isn’t afraid of risky color combinations.
  • Cell phone — Just use your own and have it in your hand at all times .

Elle Young's backstage beauty tips

Her beauty go-tos

Stage performer Elle Young has danced alongside the greatness of Mary J. Blige and Rihanna and let us in on the fact that as a performer, you're often left to your own devices in the makeup department.

So what has she learned? She is an active girl and a spa junkie and luckily offered us some backstage beauty tips that can help your skin keep up with an active lifestyle.

SheKnows: What are a few beauty tricks you’ve learned backstage?

Elle Young: A good setting powder lessens or eliminates the need for constant touchups. Blotting papers are the best because they're small, barely remove your makeup and get rid of sweat/shine with a quick dab. A creamy red or pink lipstick can make an awesome blush substitute. Baby oil is an awesome makeup remover. I also keep extra makeup sponges for touchups so that I'm not getting a lot of oil and sweat buildup on my regular brushes. That way I increase the lifespan of my expensive brushes by not having to clean them so much.Elle Young's favorite beauty products

SheKnows: What are your favorite dramatic makeup looks?

Young: I love, love, love the '60s look. So, double eyelashes, heavy dark eyeshadow with white eyeliner, mascara on the lower lashes and a nude lip. I love to use black and royal navy for my smoky eye look and a good blender brush is the key to getting the colors to mix so seamlessly. I use Q-Tips to create clean edges and remove excess shadow. Then I use concealer under the eye for contouring.

SheKnows: As a dancer, you know what it’s like to sweat. How do you still keep your skin looking great while being so active?

Young: Cleansing! Almost as soon as I'm offstage, I'm grabbing a baby wipe or makeup remover cloth to get everything off my face. On tour I always carry a travel size Clean & Clear Morning Burst in my bag to wash my face at the venue. Also, when there's time, I try to make sure to get a facial every six weeks. Most importantly, I drink a lot of water and use moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated.

"The most useful tip from my esthetician is to sleep face up whenever possible."

SheKnows: As a spa junkie, what’s your favorite treatment and place to splurge? Have you learned any valuable tips from spa technicians?

Young: If I had to choose, it would be a complete body scrub followed by a Vichy shower. I enjoy going to Glen Ivy in Corona or Two Bunch Palms in Hot Springs since they have outdoor mud treatments and great products.

The most useful tip that I've gotten from my esthetician is to sleep face up whenever possible to decrease puffiness around the eyes and breakouts. Exfoliate two to three times per week and find a good nighttime serum to replenish lost nutrients while sleeping.

SheKnows: What products are part of your everyday skin care routine?

Young: Foaming cleanser, toner, eye cream, vitamin C serum and moisturizer with UV protection.

SheKnows: What beauty touch-up products do you never leave home without?

Young: Lip balm, a travel size hand/body lotion and sun block.

One exciting part of fashion in the fall and winter is that all of the fabulous boot styles make their way into the department stores and online. Everyone knows, however, that a well-made designer boot can cost more than rent this month! Check out the styles below to rock this season’s best boot trends without going bankrupt.

Find deals on boots

You might think they don't exist, but from online stores like Zappos.com to discount retailers like Designer Shoe Warehouse, you can find trendy or classic boots on a budget. If you are ordering online, it is also a good idea to measure all parts of your leg . If you can only afford one pair this season, make sure it is one that is versatile, like a classic riding boot that can be worn with pants or skirts.

Also, to make your boots last for years to come, be sure to pick styles that are not a passing fad but rather more timeless . You can also make your boots last by storing them correctly in the off-season with boot shapers and a boot box.

Riding boot

Riding high

A classic riding boot looks sophisticated and comfortable at the same time. Try a pair like these Chocolate Run Boots . The lace up detail and rich color might make you feel like you are riding horses in the countryside of England, not walking to work in Manhattan.

Cowboy boots

Cowboy cool

Cowboy boots never seem to go out of style and are great with jeans or even the right skirt. Pair short ones with skinny jeans or tall ones like these Unlisted Shoes, Country Club Tall with a longer skirt or under boot cut jeans.

Q&A With Stacey Bendet

Known for her quirky sense of style and love of vintage, Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet has made quite a name for herself in the fashion world. I mean, c’mon, when you’ve got A-list stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Taylor Swift wearing your stuff on the reg, you’re definitely doing big things.

That’s why we just couldn’t resist the opportunity to pick the playful trendsetter’s mind. So we decided, what the heck? We might as well ask her 10 random style questions. Here goes!

SheKnows: What's the most outrageous piece of fashion advice you've ever received?

Bendet: Hmm, I don’t know… I think I’m always such a crazy dresser on my own. One of the funniest things though was when I wore this green and black striped suit to a movie premiere a couple of months ago and someone made a comment. I thought it was like one of my more conservative outfits because it was a suit. It always stuck in my mind because I was like, really? I thought I was dressed so preppy.

Alice + Olivia / Magnum collaboration
OK, so we’re officially obsessed! Inspired by the MAGNUM Mini Almond and Classic Ice Cream Bars, Stacey debuted these two skirts at the Alice + Olivia Spring 2013 presentation during New York Fashion Week and guess what? They’re the only items from the show that you can snag NOW! Get your fix online at aliceandolivia.com or in any Alice + Olivia store.

SheKnows: We adored your recent collaboration with Magnum Ice Cream. If you had to pick one comfort food and design an entire collection around it, what would it be and why? What would the clothes look like?

Bendet: I think it would be an ice cream sundae! I think even just collaborating with ice cream in general is so fun because there’s always, you know… there’s sort of a flirtatiousness to it and a sexiness to it. It’s exciting. My dream collaboration would be to design dresses based around an ultimate ice cream sundae. You know, with like super cool sequins as sprinkles.

SheKnows: You're stranded on a desert island and can only bring five things from your closet — what do you grab?

Bendet: High heels, a beaded kimono, some sort of long, flowy, goddess-y, shipwrecked dress [with a beaded waist], another pair of high heels and I guess a bathing suit.

SheKnows: Name one style rule you think all women should break.

Bendet: Whenever people say that you can’t wear white after Labor Day. I think women look like angels in white all year-round. That’s one rule I’m always kind of like, “No way!”

SheKnows: We know you love vintage shopping, so can you tell us a little about your all-time favorite find?

Bendet: My all-time favorite find? Oh my God, I have so many. It’s extremely hard for me to answer that question, but my all-time favorite store — which closed — for vintage was Karen Elson’s in Nashville. She had the most insane, amazing vintage store, Venus & Mars. I went there with my friends one weekend and got the craziest, coolest stuff. She has impeccable taste. Everything in there was like a treasure. Over the weekend though, I bought an amazing vintage, avant-garde, burnout, kind of velvety dress.

Alice + Olivia NYFW Spring/Summer 2013

SheKnows: Do you have any fashion pet peeves?

Bendet: Yes, flat shoes and sweatpants. I think they should both be banned!

SheKnows: You mentioned in a recent interview with Lucky mag that you’re such a pants girl. Pants are also how you got your start with Alice + Olivia. So tell us, how many pairs of pants do you think you actually own?

Bendet: Oh God, I don’t even know…100?

Lucille Ball as Mame
Lucille Ball in Mame

SheKnows: If you could have any TV or movie character’s wardrobe, whose would you chose and why?

Bendet: Probably Auntie Mame. Oh my gosh, she had amazing faded kimonos and robes and gowns. They’re killer.

SheKnows: Any idea what you’re going to be for Halloween this year? Or what your daughters will dress up as?

Bendet: Eloise is going to be a fairy, Scarlet is going to be Mickey Mouse and I usually let them tell me what I’m going to be.

SheKnows: Speaking of your girls, what have they taught you about fashion?

Bendet: There’s kind of like, this freedom of spirit that you don’t really have past age 5, but when you watch a child dress themselves… it’s just like they put things together that you would never think to do, and I think you learn from that. So that’s one thing. The other thing is that sometimes watching a child — especially a little girl — pick out her favorite of something, in this odd way, it’s always a best seller. Their eyes go to what’s pretty, not what’s cool or in style. It’s just what’s pretty. So I always want to see what they like.

Fall is coming, and it's time to update your makeup look. Keep on top of all the latest trends with these expert tips and products.

Fall makeup

Burgundy lips

“Fall is my favorite time of year for a number of reasons, one of them being that dark lips cycle back onto everyone’s beauty radar,” says Jeannie Vincent, makeup artist and beauty buyer for MissKL.com. If you’re attracted to a darkly-stained pout, but afraid of looking like you’re practicing for Halloween, Vincent suggests grabbing a sheer gloss, like NARS Lip Gloss in Rose Gitane . “For a little more punch, try a creamy liquid lipstick, and for the most drama, go for a matte pout.”

Our pick: glo Lipstick in Bordeaux

Barely-there foundation

According to Aussie makeup maestro Napoleon Perdis, the trick to achieving the gorgeous, glowing complexions you see on models and celebrities is using as little foundation as possible. “A sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer will even out your skin tone without creating a heavy mask, which is very aging," he says. "To get your skin in top-notch form, remember to nourish it morning and night with a serum.” And don’t forget -- primer is the key to a flawless finish!

Our pick: Natura Bisse The Cure Sheer Cream

Naturally flushed cheeks

A healthy dose of blush is one of the quickest ways to brighten up and give your entire face a boost, notes Vincent. “Many times, when you find the right cheek color, you realize you need less makeup on other areas of your face. Try putting on blush earlier in your makeup routine and you’ll see what I mean,” she says. “My rule is to go bright: pick a color with little-to-no brown in it for the most natural-looking flush and apply sparingly.”

Our pick: Napoleon Perdis Barely Blushing

Winged eyeliner

Cat eyes were all over the catwalk at the fall 2012 shows. To nail the look at home, grab a liquid or gel liner and line above your top lashes, extending up and out past the outer corner of your eye, suggests celebrity makeup artist and creator of Susan Posnick Cosmetics, Susan Posnick. “Keep the rest of your eyelid clean, and use a matte ivory shadow to even out your skin tone and make your eyeliner look even more precise.”

Our pick: Cover Girl LineBlast 24 Hour Felt Tip Liner in Enduring Black

Expert tip

Use the runways to look for changes -- not just in color, but also in texture -- to update your technique. "Don't ever be afraid to experiment with a new look, and never abandon what makes you feel most comfortable. True beauty comes when a woman finds the delicate balance of creativity, whimsy and self-confidence that her makeup should bring to her daily life!" says Mathew Nigara, celebrity makeup artist.

Evan Rachel Wood and Pippa Middleton's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood

Is it just me or does Evan Rachel Wood look like a golden goddess? Geesh, there's so much gold going on here, I don't even know where to start! So where did the actress dazzle in gold? The LACMA 2012 Art + Film Gala!

Let's start off with the dress, shall we? The sparkly gold sequins remind me of fall leaves! Super cute. And the sheer top is totally on trend for fall. There is such a thing as going overboard with one color, but Evan is demonstrating how to color block without really color blocking here. What the heck does that mean? Well, she took one main color and worked it into her look in multiple varying shades.

The final verdict? This look is golden! Sorry, I just had to. The accessories are simple, the dress bold and the hair and makeup quite elegant. Well done, girl!

Pippa Middleton

Pippa Middleton

Am I the only one that kind of stalks Pippa's style? Well fellow Pippa fans, this week we had a lot to watch as Pippa promoted her new book, Celebrate, in London! Here, she sported a super cute tweed dress.

I love the subtle color blocking going on here with the black and tweed! And the ruffle bottom? Super cute and flirty. Pippa kept things simple with her accessories, opting for classic black pumps to let her adorable dress do the talking.

The final verdict? From head to toe, everything is perfect here! Adorable and flirty. A+ Pippa!

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Pippa Middleton's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

In case you weren't aware, Pippa Middleton is famous for more than her ample behind. Kate Middleton's sister is quite the budding fashionista and party planner, and has now added author to her resume with the release of her new book, Celebrate. This week, the beautiful young Brit promoted the book in London, and did so in some serious style.

Kate has her typical standby voluminous blowout that she's famous for, but Pippa seems to have a bit more fun with her hairstyles. I'm totally crushing on this cute curly ponytail, aren't you? The high shine and sideswept detail make it stand out for me. Recreate the look with the tips below!

Get the look

1

Dry

Blow dry hair using a round brush .

2

Curl

Next, take any curling iron you have on hand and curl inch-sized sections.

3

Spray

Spritz sections of hair with a high shine spray.

4

Secure

Gather hair into a ponytail and secure.

5

Finish

Finish off with a bit more spray and secure any flyaways, and you're good to go!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Cameron Diaz & Ke$ha

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Cameron Diaz and Ke$ha's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

CAmeron Diaz

Cameron Diaz

Oh my Gucci! Cameron Diaz hit the LACMA Art + Film gala wearing this mustard colored mess from Gucci's spring 2013 collection. We think this retro-esque ensemble would have been better off staying in the '70s for a few reasons.

The baggy, bell-shaped sleeves are all wrong and throw off the dress instead of adding to it. Combined with the embellished neckline and belted waist, there's just too much happening here. Her messy hairdo is also too casual for the dressy, A-list affair.

The final verdict? We think this dress would be salvageable if it was sleeveless or had normal sleeves. We do approve of Cam's cute strappy shoes and her killer legs, though.

Ke$ha

Ke$ha

What the fug, Ke$ha?! The singer stepped out for the LA launch of her Baby-G watch that she personally designed wearing a velvet blazer, black booties and not much else. Did she forget her pants at home?

And even though this event wasn't held on Halloween, Ke$ha still busted out the crazy makeup, rocking black and gold eye makeup, loads of her beloved glitter and a half shaved and dyed head. She accessorized the whole look with a gold chain bracelet that turned into multiple rings and some seriously long nails.

The final verdict? Ke$ha should save this ensemble for a costume party. She's scaring small children in this!

We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Justine Piecuch, a stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, is showing us how to care for a flaky scalp.

Your questions answered!

Your question

"What are some easy ways to cure my flaky scalp besides shampoo and conditioner?"

Justine's answer!

To get this correctly fixed, it's important to understand that a "flaky scalp" can be caused by a trillion different things. There are a couple of things that you can change in your daily life to see if these are causing the problem. If you go through this list and are still having an issue, I would recommend seeing a dermatologist. It could more likely be a skin condition than a product induced problem.

  1. If you're someone who shampoos every day, try switching to every other day to avoid drying out the scalp.
  2. Make sure if you're using lots of products, you're scrubbing your scalp well when shampooing to remove any product build up. This usually occurs in the crown and the front of the head where people sometimes over distribute products.
  3. Make sure you're not having an allergic reaction to the product. Surprisingly, people don't realize that something so seemingly small as this could have such a big impact. Lay off all products you're using and slowly try to bring them back into your regimen to see if you notice a difference.
  4. Very hot showers can cause the scalp to be very itchy and sometimes flaky, so as tough as this may be in the cold months, try to use lukewarm water.
  5. Try brushing your scalp with a boar's hair brush . This will help to loosen up anything hanging on to the scalp.
  6. Understand that adding conditioner all over your root will only make you look oily. Dry ends do not cause a dry scalp.
  7. Proper eating habits and water intake are huge. Make sure you always take good care of your health.
  8. Over the counter products for dry scalp or dandruff will only make matters worse. They'll cause more issues and the scalp will start to over produce. If you should need this type of product, it's best to just go see a doctor. There's a special regime they'll have you follow to clear this all away.

Make a note

All these will help with light flaking. If you see lots of flakes on your clothes, or every time you run your fingers through you hair some come out, see a doctor. If it's worse than this and you have larger "wet flake" also, go see a doctor. There are many skin conditions that come out in your scalp that need special medication. Many people have these issues and it's absolutely nothing to be ashamed about.

Check out our beauty tips to take your daily look from day to night — you'll be ready for any happy hour or night out on the town.

When you know you'll be on the go from early morning until late in the evening, start the day more naturally than usual to maintain a fresher look.

powder

Morning

Before you head out, apply light powder or foundation, swipe cheeks with a peachy or pale pink blush and then dab soft shimmer on the eyelids.

Bypass heavy eyeliner to avoid raccoon eyes once five o'clock rolls around. Instead, to achieve a wide-eyed look, curl eyelashes and follow with a quick swipe of mascara. Keep in mind, applying less during the day will help you keep a fresher face hours later.

eyeshadow, and brush

Afternoon

Reach into your travel makeup kit and go for bold eyes by outlining lids with a dark shade and accenting inner or outer corners with a flirty color such as plum or emerald green for extra drama.

To camouflage tired eyes, touch up inner corners with a shimmer shade and lightly sweep it underneath the eyes as well. Don't forget to add a few extra swipes of mascara to the top and bottom lashes.

Finish your look by applying a beige bronzer to the cheekbones and a subtle gloss to the lips to balance out dramatic eyes. Slip into something comfortable and chic, and the night is yours.

lotion

Evening

Once the work day ends, use a Biore daily cleansing cloth for fruity, refreshing exfoliation. These individual, portable cloths pack easily and require no water or towel, leaving your face as clean as if you just woke up from a good night's sleep. Next, smooth on Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture, which will moisten skin in preparation for your makeup transformation as well as provide great SPF 15 benefits.

Transition your style

Taking your outfit from day to night can be easy with these simple tips.

The pantsuit

Do you have to rock a pantsuit for a major executive meeting? Opt for a sleek, black option and pair a metallic tank underneath. You can simply remove the blazer, follow the beauty tips above and you're ready for happy hour with the girls.

The pantsuit, a clutch, and black heels with a silver tip

Style Tip: Sky-high black pumps will only make the look that much stronger.

Tahari Arthur S. Levine Two-Piece Pantsuit $140, 3.1 Phillip Lim Tank $119, Poppie Jones Chain Tote $50, Kimbra Black Pointed Court Heels $20

Bold bottoms

Bold bottoms

Prints are back on trend this fall and those bold colored pants we all loved last spring are back with them. I know it can be an intimidating trend to try if you're a bit fashion shy, so if you want to whet your palate this fall, try easing in with a bold legging. I'm currently crushing on these ones from Yummie Tummie . A bonus? They help hide any extra lumps and bumps you might develop this fall while hibernating inside.

Sheer blouse

Sheer blouse

Sheer is sexy again, and it's time to work this trend into your fashion repertoire this fall. Pair a sheer top with a sexy bra underneath if you're feeling really daring, or cover up a bit in a similar color tank top. Whatever way you work the look, it'll be major. Try a bold colored blouse like this blue one from H&M .

Fresh tights

Fresh tights

Every fall, I get excited to restock my tights collection, don't you? This season, make sure you stock up on a mix of opaque and sheer options, making sure to mix colors with patterns. One pair I'm currently lusting over? These black pearl ones from Topshop !

Dirty talk: Why dirty hair is better

Do you wash your hair every day? We’re here to tell you why you shouldn’t. That’s right — it’s time to get dirty! Daily shampoo sessions aren’t always necessary and we have the scoop on why.
Woman with nice hair

Do you wash your hair every day? We’re here to tell you why you shouldn’t. That’s right — it’s time to get dirty! Daily shampoo sessions aren’t always necessary and we have the scoop on why.

Let's talk dirty — hair

Don’t wash your hair every day — here’s why:

It’ll be easier to style

If you’ve ever washed your hair prior to going to the salon to get an updo or another more formal look, you likely got a talking-to from the stylist. Freshly washed and dried hair isn’t nearly as easy to work with as hair that was washed a day or two ago. Squeaky clean hair can slip out of pins and is notorious for not cooperating. Even creating a braided or more intricate look at home will be a lot easier to manage if you do it on a day you haven’t washed your hair.

Your color will last longer

If you color your hair, whether it’s your whole head or just regular highlights, washing daily can dull your color and lead to more frequent trips to the salon. Keep your locks looking bright and freshly dyed by only washing every other day . When you do wash your hair, do so with a shampoo formulated for color-treated hair so you ensure color doesn’t fade.

It’ll be healthier

The more you wash your hair, the more you’re stripping your strands of their natural oils. That’s right — too much time with the shampoo bottle can actually mean less-than-lustrous locks. Over-washing can actually dry hair out, which isn’t ideal. Keep your tresses healthy and looking their best by avoiding daily shampoo sessions.

You’ll save time

Washing and drying hair takes time — for those of us with long hair, a wash and blow dry session take a lot of time. By cutting back on styling time, you end up with more time to get ready, sleep in or even fit in a quick jog or trip to the gym .

Quick tip

If the thought of skipping a few shampoos a week freaks you out, there are a few things you can do to make life between washes a bit easier. Invest in some dry shampoo to revive yesterday’s style and stock up on hair accessories to give your locks a new look on days you don’t wash your hair.

How to Frenchify your fashion

I am a true Francophile. When visiting, I trawl the flea markets in the wee hours of the morning and indulge in dreamy gastronomic dinners at night. I am a true Francophile. When visiting, I trawl the flea markets in the wee hours of the morning and indulge in dreamy gastronomic dinners at night. Whatever the activity, one thing is clear: French women are never slobs.

how to channel your inner parisian

French women exude a style and confidence that stems from a commitment to always looking one’s best. It’s not about designer clothes. It’s not about glitziness. And, it is definitely not about showcasing the flash-in-the-pan trends. To French women, style is a matter of keeping things simple but never disheveled.

A French woman would never, even to walk her dog at 11 p.m., leave the house in sweatpants. Quelle horreur! Taking pride in one’s appearance is the eleventh commandment in the City of Light. So, what’s the secret? Having a small but mighty collection of streamlined classics that can be mixed and matched with one au courant accessory.

French women like to flatter their figures , so fit and proportion are critical. To wit, a black A line dress is paired with patent leather ballet flats and a gold cuff. For casual moments, combine a pair of dark denim jeans with a black and white striped boat neck top, espadrilles and oversized hoop earrings.

French fashion ideas
INC denim leggings , Tommy Hilfiger boatneck top ,
ASOS espadrilles , Bebe hoop earrings

And accessories?

Good shoes and bags are de rigueur. You will see many structured totes, a classic shape that will work for almost every outfit. French women love their scarves. Why? Quite simply, this silky, lightweight accessory is the ultimate layering piece, an accent piece which adds polish to every ensemble imaginable.

First impressions are everything. When meeting someone in France for the first time, you will get the once over, eyes lingering below your ankles. You have heard the mantra "shoes make the man?" Well, in France, shoes make the woman also. Unless she is headed to la gym, you will never see a woman in sneakers. Shoes are stylish and fastidiously maintained with frequent shines. It’s a Gallic thing.

10 Tips to Frenchify your fashion sense

Need some visuals? Do a Google search of some of the Franco-fab muses for inspiration: Jane Birkin, Clemence Poesy, Carla Bruni, Lou Doillon, Marion Cotillard, Audrey Tatou, Vanessa Paradis, Ines de la Fressange and, of course, Coco Chanel.

  1. Quality control: Invest in quality basics — a cashmere sweater, a good coat, great skirt and trousers — that will last forever. It’s better to have a few quality basics than many poorly made garments.
  2. Look to the future: Classic trumps trendy. Ask yourself, “Will I still wear this in five years?” Don’t waste money on looks that won't stick around.
  3. Dress to impress: Dress for your body type. Just because skinny jeans are “in” does not mean that they will look good on you. Understand what shapes flatter your figure and stick with them. Always.
  4. Avoid the dumps: Never wear sweatpants or other “loungewear” in public.
  5. Tie one on: A scarf is the ultimate layering piece — that chic piece de resistance that adds polish to one’s overall look.
  6. Bag lady: Invest in one multitasking, classic black or brown handbag. It will last forever.
  7. Foot notes: Always wear fab footwear. Sneakers? Reserved for gym visits.
  8. The simple life: Keep it simple with one eye popping accessory like a gold cuff, a gold pendant or a red purse.
  9. Go au naturel: French women never apply makeup with a heavy hand. It’s all about evening out the complexion, some blush, some mascara and a soft lip.
  10. Celebrate your age: Don’t dress as a teenager if you are a mom. And, forget the plumpers and Botox. If you take care of your skin, you will age gracefully.
