Matte tends to be the go-to lip trend for autumn and winter when the more dewy, glossy shades retire at the end of the summer. At Carolina Herrera's AW15 show at New York Fashion Week, makeup artist Diane Kendal applied a strong, velvet matte lipstick to the models' lips. At Burberry's AW15 London Fashion Week show, makeup artist Wendy Rowe also stuck to matte lips.
The good news is that you don't have to splash out on a high-end, long-lasting matte lipstick to achieve the designer look. You can make your own at home — and it's incredibly simple:
1. First apply your lipstick as normal, then line your lips (with a liner than matches the colour of your lippy).
2. Carefully blot your lips with a tissue to soak up the gloss or shine.
3. Roll a makeup sponge in translucent powder or baby powder and lightly press it onto your lips. Roll your lips together to ensure even distribution of colour. The powder sets the lipstick, giving it a lovely matte finish. It will last longer and is less likely to come off when you have a drink… or a kiss!
These translucent powders are affordable and come highly recommended by those in the know:
Micro-fine translucent powder, Me Me Me Cosmetics, £7
No7 Perfect Light Loose Powder, Boots, £11
Invisible Finish Loose Powder, M&S, £12
For an alternative method, place a tissue over your lips and keep it there while applying your powder. Dip a fluffy brush (any kind will do, from a big powder brush to an eyeshadow blending brush) into the powder and tap it a few times onto the tissue. The perfect amount of powder passes through the tissue, says The Beauty Department.
Do you love a matte lip? What's your top tip for the perfect coverage? Let us know in the comments below.
First, establish a routine.
De-flake: Get rid of dry, flaky patches by gently exfoliating lips every few days or so. A soft toothbrush or warm washcloth will do the trick, but we find it way more fun to use a lip scrub. You can also make your own with large granule sugar and a little coconut oil.
Moisturize: Throughout the day — but particularly in the morning, at night and after exfoliating — apply a hydrating balm, oil or cream to lips to keep them moisturized. Steer clear of waxy formulas for this step, since they act as a barrier but don’t hydrate.
Protect: This is where wax-based formulas come in. After your lips are hydrated, layer on a thicker balm to seal in moisture and shield them from the elements. For added protection outdoors, choose a formula with SPF.
Re-hydrate: One of the best ways to combat dry lips is to make sure you’re drinking enough water. Even slight dehydration can lead to a flake-fest, so be sure to consume more during the winter.
Lip-savers we love
1. Sara Happ Midnight Blueberry
The brand’s beloved lip scrub comes in an array of covetable flavors, and this blueberry one is a must-try. This set pairs it with Lip Slip, a luxe, super-moisturizing balm. (Sara Happ, $40)
2. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip Therapy
A triple-threat treatment: colloidal oatmeal soothes, shea butter and glycerin moisturize and dimethicone creates a smooth, primed surface for other lip products. (Sephora, $12)
3. Skinceuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair
Antioxidants are a key anti-aging addition to your skin care routine, so it follows that they’d be a good thing for lips, too. This treatment helps stave off environmental damage while moisturizing and healing dry, inflamed skin. (Skinceuticals, $38)
4. eos Pomegranate Raspberry Lip Balm
Natural ingredients, cool, colorful packaging and an affordable price make this balm a perennial favorite. And did we mention the unique range of flavors? Pop one into your clutch and go. (eos, $4)
5. Shiseido Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment
This luxurious balm not only hydrates — it boasts anti-aging properties and plumps lips for a fuller, more youthful look. (Shiseido, $36)

8. Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Duo
From the same people who brought us BB creams comes this advanced lip-saving duo. The shape-shifting Oil Balm transforms from a balm to an oil texture for extra hydration, while the Lipair Mint protects and soothes chapped lips. (Sephora, $18)
9. Fresh Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy
You use serum for your face — why not for lips? Layer this anti-aging serum under your other lip treatments for a smoother, more defined pout. (Fresh, $35)
10. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
This is the same concept of a “sleeping mask,” but for your pout. Before going to bed, use the enclosed applicator to smooth on the pink, fruit-scented formula (it smells a bit like those scented erasers you had as a kid). You’ll wake up with soft, supple lips. (Amazon, $20)

A non-invasive spa treatment
Lasers and radio frequency technologies are all the rage at medical spas. An alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgeries, treatments like Thermi can firm, tighten and lift areas of the skin, using heat instead of needles or scalpels. While the services can be expensive, the lack of downtime and pain will have the recipient thanking you for years to come. (Thermi, $3200)
Find the perfect scent
UNIQUE Fragrance guides users though a virtual experience of selecting scents, ingredients and a bottle design to customize the perfect perfume. (UNIQUE Fragrance, $100)
There's nothing a beauty addict appreciates more than having a professional apply her makeup. National chains like Sephora offer clients customized makeup applications with only a $50 purchase: a minimum almost all women can meet without even thinking twice.
Who doesn't appreciate a nice mani/pedi combo? A gift card will allow your BFF to take a trip to her favorite spa on you. Available online and redeemable nationwide, you can choose the amount to gift. (Spafinder, amount varies)
A spa vacation
For the most special of special friends on your Christmas list, a spa trip to the Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona will cement your friendship for life. All-inclusive packages start at $3,540/person for a three-night retreat and includes meals, dozens of fitness activities, complimentary use of facilities, a luxurious room and $450 to use on their decadent spa treatments.
Giving your friend a total beauty experience this year will produce lots of smiles while saving you the hassle of wrapping.
In order to achieve this wide-eyed, sensual look the majority of us will arm ourselves with a great volume and length-boosting mascara, but also might consider taking our makeup game to the next level. This means experimenting with false eyelashes for special occasions or simply because we feel having gorgeous lashes will make our Sunday grocery shopping routine a little more special.
But where to begin?
False eyelashes are a dime a dozen and can be purchased at every price point. Some are made from human hair, others are synthetic, and quite a few are now crafting theirs from mink fur. To the untrained eye, it can be difficult to choose one set of lashes over another — they all start to look the same, don't they? But bridal hair and makeup artist Molly Leahy from Blushing Brides has used a variety of false lashes on clients, knows what makes a great set stand apart from the rest, and has narrowed down her favorites to six false eyelash brands that are both affordable and long-lasting.
1. House of Lashes
They may be a bit pricier than drugstore lashes, but Leahy says they're worth the extra cost because they can be reused multiple times over and still look brand new. "A slightly thicker band makes application a breeze and they have everything from very natural to extremely glam," Leahy says. "The Kardashians can be seen sporting these on Instagram a lot. These are only sold online at their website." (House of Lashes, between $10-$12).
2. Ardell Double Up
These drugstore-brand lashes are extremely affordable and perfect for people who love to experiment with lots of different types of lashes and looks. "I like the double ups because they look like they have a really beautiful mascara on them, both with the individuals and the strips," Leahy says (CVS, $6).
3. Sephora Brand Lashes
If you're looking to simplify your makeup routine, Leahy suggests Sephora Brand Lashes, which cut down on the time it takes you to apply mascara on top of false lashes so that they look more natural. "[These are] jet black so they give your eyes an added pop without having to add an extra coat of mascara," Leahy says (Sephora, $10).
4. Laura Mercier False Lashes
Minimalists or ladies who prefer not to look all glammed up will flip for Laura Mercier lashes, which Leahy says are neither too long, nor too thick. "These are the perfect lashes for blondes or anyone who wants a more natural looking lash," she says (Nordstrom, $18).
5. Kardashian Beauty Lashes
If Kim Kardashian is your beauty inspiration for all things eyelashes, you're in luck: These glam lashes get her stamp of approval. "These lashes are the same brand that Kim K. wore on her wedding day so you know they look good," Leahy says. "Plus they have a small band so you don't need to worry about lining it up a little off." (Ulta, $7).
6. MAC Lashes
It's hard to beat MAC Cosmetics when it comes to giving women a truly versatile collection of false lashes that suit the needs of both natural beauties and glamour girl divas. "They come in all shapes and sizes and have a very thin band which can make application slightly difficult but they look incredibly natural," Leahy says. "I would recommend the demi lashes for just the outer corners or to buy a pair, cut them in half and then apply one half at a time for easier application." (MAC Cosmetics, $17).
Why? These real-life Rapunzels have never cut their hair... ever.
It also started with 43-year-old Tere Lynn Svetlecich Russell. The Illinois has never cut her hair, which now measures in at 74 inches, and her decision to keep it long was influenced by her husband, Chip. He loves her long strands — and so does she — and so they've carried the tradition onto their three chidren. Daughter Callan's hair measures in at 37 inches, while Cendalyn's is 36 inches and Chesney's is 27 inches.
Each woman has a full, healthy-looking head of hair. We don't know what kind of magic potion they're drinking to keep it so healthy, but they do admit that it requires a ton of upkeep with each girl using at least a quarter bottle of conditioner each time they get in the shower. And while the three girls do wash their hair, Tera doesn't because there's just too much there to deal with.
"I tried that once several years ago and my hair got so heavy with all of the water I landed on the shower floor," she told Barcroft TV.
The foursome even competes at long-hair competitions each year at the Illinois State Fair. Naturally, they always bring home the blue ribbons.
It's not surprising that none of them have visited a beauty salon. However, the brains behind Barcroft took them to their first salon visit in a not-so-subtle attempt to get them to chop some hair off for the camera. They weren't having it, but Tera said she's not going to stop her daughters from making their own decisions about their strands... when the time is right.
"It's not going to be my decision, it's going to be theirs," she said. "But I want them to be mature enough to make that decision for themselves."
In the mean time we have a request, ladies: Please write a book on hair care, because it seems like our hair never grows. We need the secrets!

And even though it looks impossible to create, nail guru Miss Pop breaks it down in easy steps that make it more reasonable. Even better, it's an easy way to impress the kids at all those holiday parties you're invited to.
Don't share mascara because it might cause infection. Watch out for allergic reactions.
These are important things to be aware of, but one woman has a warning for every makeup lover out there — and it's likely something you've never thought of before.
"If any of you do your makeup in a little mirror in front of the window like I do, stash it away when you're done," Kasey Ault wrote on Facebook Dec. 1. "I just came home to a house full of smoke and found clear evidence of a fire on my desk."
makeup mirror fire
The reason: She believes her makeup mirror reflected the sunlight off the magnified side. "I'm extremely lucky the fire didn't reach the battery of my iPad, my wooden desk, my laundry basket next to my desk," she continued. It miraculously was somehow contained. I had my sweet chihuahua asleep in that room, along with my other three dogs and five cats in the house. I could have lost them all."
Though it's not common, fires resulting from makeup mirrors have happened before. Earlier this year, a British couple's mansion was gutted after a makeup mirror reflected the light. "Cases of reflected light triggering fires in homes are rare, however we would urge the public to be aware of the potential danger of reflective surfaces intensifying the sun's rays," a rep for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service told the Daily Mail in February.
It's most likely to happen in the winter months because the "low-lying sun can shine on fixed surfaces for a prolonged period." So while it probably won't happen to you, it's better safe than sorry. Just stick your mirror in the drawer when you're done applying your makeup.
It's absolutely something you should do if you want, but more plastic surgeons are developing alternatives that don't require anesthesia.
One of these treatments is the non-surgical nose job innovated by Hollywood's favorite plastic surgeon, Dr. Simon Ourian. He's the one who gave Kylie Jenner those famous lips, so he knows his stuff. But non-celebrities with non-celebrity incomes can still get his treatments. One Londoner, Joanna Della-Ragione, recently went through the nose procedure and the results are quite dramatic.
non-surgical nose job
"I wasn't unhappy with my nose as it was but I didn't like the deep curve in the bridge and seeing the pictures on Dr. Ourian's Instagram page made me realize it could be refined and improved without too much pain and downtime," Della-Ragione wrote in an essay for the Daily Mail. "However, if you can get results that are as good as, or better than surgery without the danger of anesthetic and the resulting pain, bruising and downtime, then this procedure is well worth it."
Basically, it's all about evening out the nose's proportions with fillers like Voluma and Restylane.
"Much like a trip to the dentist, the procedure isn't painful but it's hardly pleasant either," she continued. "There are a lot of injections but Dr. Ourian works fast and the whole thing is over in about five or six minutes."
non-surgical nose job 2
"I prefer this strategy because it's far more direct," Dr. Ourian told her. "Surgery is very permanent. With this if the result is not as desired I can easily dissolve the filler, reversing the treatment." And though the before-and-after pictures show a big change, the real-life view is subtle enough that her friends didn't know the difference until she told them.
"And I have to say, I'm very happy. This is the true magic of Dr. Ourian: The effects are subtle enough that you wouldn't notice a difference unless you were told, but at the same time the procedure has given my face an overall more refined finish," she said.
"There is no downtime and I go for dinner with friends that evening. They remark that I look well but no one even remotely notices the difference until I show them the video taken on my phone. They gasp in surprise and collectively ask for Dr. Ourian's contact details."
In fact, this video makes it look too easy and the same simple steps will actually help you create two different nail looks in one. Watch and create Santa hat nails and Christmas tree nails using nail expert Miss Pop's awesome guidance.
You will need:
First, sketch a thick line of black pencil along your top lash line.
Then, with your glittery/colored pencil, swipe across your lid above your black line, just under the crease.
With your finger, blend the 2 colors upwards.
With the colored pencil, line the lower lash line and smudge out with your finger.
With your black pencil, line the waterline.
Now, apply mascara on top and bottom lashes.
Moving onto the face, use the contour end of your NYX Wonder Stick to sweep under cheekbones, the temples, under the jawline, around the forehead and on the sides of the nose if you wish.
Use your fingers to blend. Remember to blend your cheekbone contour upwards, not down!
Flip the stick over and use the highlight end on the tops of the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, on the cupid’s bow of the lip, center of the chin and on the brow bone. Blend with fingers.
Using your lip liner, draw a hashtag on the high part of your cheek and blend with fingers.
With that same lip liner, outline and fill in lips, blending with fingers for a stained effect.
Swipe on a shimmery, holographic lipgloss and you’re done!

curve models 1a
A curve model is a model who, regardless of clothing size, has curves: Bountiful boobs, a big butt, thick thighs, soft shoulders and/or a myriad of other body parts that don't fit into the stereotypical "model" look. And make no mistake, this isn't just another word for "plus size," as curvy has often been used in the past. Rather, it shows that women from a size zero to a size 36 can all be proportioned differently. Just because a lady is slim doesn't mean she has no hips, and just because a woman is bigger doesn't mean she can't have muscular arms.
Jordyn Woods 1a
Barbie Ferreira 1a
It's that last part that makes her proud, as she loves showing that women who don't fit neatly into a certain category can be beautiful — not in spite of their differences but because of them.
As a woman who has a ridiculously hard time finding a pair of pants that fit my smaller waist but still flatter the killer quads and butt I work so hard for in the gym, this is a movement I can appreciate. I spend most of my life in leggings and skirts, both of which I love, but I wish that I had more options. And I would definitely love to see more women that look like me on websites and in ads, at the very least to help me see what the clothing might look like on a figure like mine.
Here are my top picks for cruelty-free beauty lovers in your life... including yourself, of course!
1. Amal argan oil
It's (almost) not an exaggeration to say I wanted to write this article specifically so I could gush about this Amal argan oil! I'm no newbie to using oils for skin care, but Amal argan oil is truly special. It smells heavenly, absorbs beautifully and nourishes and heals your skin. It's suitable for all types of skin, including combination and blemish-prone — trust me, I would know. Plus, it's organic, produced ethically using traditional and sustainable methods. If you purchase it on Love Goodly, a part of the proceeds even benefits Farm Sanctuary, something all cruelty-free beauties will appreciate. (Love Goodly, $48)
2. Lily Lolo eye shadow palette in Laid Bare
All-natural, mineral-based eye shadows in perfect neutral colors in one sleek packaging? Be still, my beating heart! The Lily Lolo eye shadow palette in Laid Bare is vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, preservative-free and fragrance-free — just all stylish. (Lily Lolo, $34)
3. Lily Lolo Eye Spy with My Gorgeous Eye kit
While I love the convenience of pressed eye shadow palettes, you have to admit that there are always one or two (or more) shades that you just never use, amirite? Fix that problem by customizing your own Eye Spy with My Gorgeous Eye kit with any three of Lily Lolo's numerous loose mineral eye shadows. It also comes in a pretty gift box. Hooray! (Lily Lolo, $28)
4. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit limited edition
Six of Hourglass' legendary skin-enhancing blushes, bronzers and highlighters in one beautiful compact — need I say more? These are no ordinary highlighters — they're so universally and incredulously flattering, it's like holding the key to instant glamour. The beauty lover on your list — or you, frankly — will be very happy to receive the Ambient Lighting Edit limited edition set. (Hourglass, $80)
5. Lurk AS01 perfume oil
I've had my eyes on this luxurious, all-natural perfume oil for some time. With notes of cedar, tuberose and rose, AS01 perfume oil is a gorgeous, sophisticated white floral. It also comes in a pretty muslin bag, making it a perfect gift. (Lurk, $55)
6. Pacifica Island Vanilla Take Me There kit
Pacifica's scrumptious scents turn me back into a middle schooler who obsessed over Bath & Body Works at the mall — but a lot more grown up. This Island Vanilla Take Me There kit contains body butter, a perfume roll-on and lip tint in an amazing scent that will transport you to an island. Sounds good to me! (Pacifica Beauty, $18)
7. Julep Warm Wishes Trio
I love Julep's vegan-friendly and toxin-free nail polishes, and the holiday-inspired shades in the Warm Wishes Trio just puts you in a festive mood, don't they? Imagine how happy your giftee will be every time she looks at her hands. (Julep, $30)
8. Aromi lipstick in Flirty
For the glamorous beauty lovers on your list, there is no such thing as "just another shade of red lipstick." Give her Flirty lipstick, flattering red, for her cruelty-free, vegan lip wardrobe, made with nourishing plant oils. (Aromi, $17)
9. Anthropologie mirrored display boxes
As all beauty junkies know, you love trying out new products, but very quickly run out of ways to store all of them. Give the thoughtful gift of these lovely mirrored display boxes, so she can store away all her perfumes, serums and lipsticks neatly on her vanity. (Anthropologie, $58 for 3)
10. Amal Moroccan black soap
This Moroccan black soap isn't your average soap — it's made from traditional methods in Morocco using eucalyptus and olive oils. It feels buttery, adds vitamin E and helps release the deepest toxins and impurities for clear, glowing skin. (Love Goodly, $40)
A blarf, more commonly known as a blanket scarf, is an oversized scarf designed to combine style and function. The wrap is larger than a normal scarf and can be even worn as a cape if desired. Its comfy design is meant to keep you extra bundled up — hence the blanket reference.
In case you're still unsure about this blanket-scarf hybrid, allow us to show you five styles that are so chic you'll forget all about the cold — OK, maybe not. But you'll at least look good!

The fuller look is so pervasive that it's easy to forget that it takes needles, a talented doctor and hundreds of dollars to get the look.
Not sure you want to go through the pain? Brielle Biermann, the daughter of reality star Kim Zolciak, recently shared a video of her lip enhancement in an Instagram video — and yes, it looks painful.
Brielle Biermann lip filler
"My lips are my biggest insecurity and I'm so happy w my results now!" she captioned the clip. "You truly are the best! even though I hate needles you made this very easy!
The "you" she is referring to is cosmetic dermatologist Simon Ourian, MD, the same guy responsible for Jenner's look. "I do micro-droplets, which distribute minute amounts of product," he told ELLE of how he creates a uniform look without lumps and bumps.
While the technique has improved since the over-inflated fish lips of yore, there are still dangers of trying to rush things. Ourian recommends spacing out injections and "not [doing] everything in one session so it's done once a week, twice a week, once a month."
"Respect the anatomy of the lip. You cannot make someone's lips look completely different," he told ELLE, adding that his favorite fillers are Juvederm, followed by Restylane and Voluma. "If you want to have something that lasts a bit longer, choose Voluma. If you want something that lasts a few months, choose Juvederm."
If you are looking for some new, fresh fashion ideas for this winter, turn to the beautiful minds of fashion bloggers. They take risks, pair the unexpected — but mostly — have fun with style. Take after them and be bold this winter. Here are nine comfy, cozy and super chic winter outfit inspirations.
1. Bright and cheery
Although soft grays and creamy ivories may make you want to curl up with a cup of tea, don't be afraid to get loud with color. Choose your brightest scarf and cheeriest jacket and hit the streets.
2. Vintage florals
This vintage, feminine look is flawless — and timeless. And what's more? All of these pieces can easily be mixed and matched into the rest of your wardrobe.
3. Rosy red
If winter were a color, I think it'd be the most delicious shiny shade of candy apple red. Pull that color into your apparel, onto your lips or even onto your happy pup.
4. Soft as snow
This look is so classy — and so easy! You most likely have all of these pieces in your wardrobe already. The outfit can work for the office or for a date.
5. Sleek slates
If you have trouble pairing items to create an outfit (like I do), start with variations of one color. Here, the outfit is made of varying tones of gray and black. Easy peasy.
6. Shimmer in champagne
Sometimes, it can be hard to get dressed up in the winter because all your cute mini skirts and dresses are way too cold! Try a long maxi skirt and make it edgy with a leather jacket.
7. Pretty plaid
Give your outfit one stunning piece, like these black and white plaid pants. By keeping everything else simple, your focal piece will really stand out.
8. Sporty and spiffy
Running out to do a quick errand? Don't you dare touch those jeans and that sweatshirt! Instead, put on a pair of leggings, sneakers and your best leather jacket.
9. Cozy and warm
One of the best things about winter? Comfort. Save all your tight tees and short skirts for summer. With this outfit, wear a cozy sweater and add some spunk with some amazing thigh highs.
