Matte tends to be the go-to lip trend for autumn and winter when the more dewy, glossy shades retire at the end of the summer. At Carolina Herrera's AW15 show at New York Fashion Week, makeup artist Diane Kendal applied a strong, velvet matte lipstick to the models' lips. At Burberry's AW15 London Fashion Week show, makeup artist Wendy Rowe also stuck to matte lips.

The good news is that you don't have to splash out on a high-end, long-lasting matte lipstick to achieve the designer look. You can make your own at home — and it's incredibly simple:

1. First apply your lipstick as normal, then line your lips (with a liner than matches the colour of your lippy).

2. Carefully blot your lips with a tissue to soak up the gloss or shine.

3. Roll a makeup sponge in translucent powder or baby powder and lightly press it onto your lips. Roll your lips together to ensure even distribution of colour. The powder sets the lipstick, giving it a lovely matte finish. It will last longer and is less likely to come off when you have a drink… or a kiss!

These translucent powders are affordable and come highly recommended by those in the know:

For an alternative method, place a tissue over your lips and keep it there while applying your powder. Dip a fluffy brush (any kind will do, from a big powder brush to an eyeshadow blending brush) into the powder and tap it a few times onto the tissue. The perfect amount of powder passes through the tissue, says The Beauty Department.

Everything you need to weather-proof your dry lips

First, establish a routine.

De-flake: Get rid of dry, flaky patches by gently exfoliating lips every few days or so. A soft toothbrush or warm washcloth will do the trick, but we find it way more fun to use a lip scrub. You can also make your own with large granule sugar and a little coconut oil.

Moisturize: Throughout the day — but particularly in the morning, at night and after exfoliating — apply a hydrating balm, oil or cream to lips to keep them moisturized. Steer clear of waxy formulas for this step, since they act as a barrier but don’t hydrate.

Protect: This is where wax-based formulas come in. After your lips are hydrated, layer on a thicker balm to seal in moisture and shield them from the elements. For added protection outdoors, choose a formula with SPF.

Re-hydrate: One of the best ways to combat dry lips is to make sure you’re drinking enough water. Even slight dehydration can lead to a flake-fest, so be sure to consume more during the winter.

6 Best false eyelash sets according to a pro makeup artist

$

In order to achieve this wide-eyed, sensual look the majority of us will arm ourselves with a great volume and length-boosting mascara, but also might consider taking our makeup game to the next level. This means experimenting with false eyelashes for special occasions or simply because we feel having gorgeous lashes will make our Sunday grocery shopping routine a little more special.

But where to begin?

False eyelashes are a dime a dozen and can be purchased at every price point. Some are made from human hair, others are synthetic, and quite a few are now crafting theirs from mink fur. To the untrained eye, it can be difficult to choose one set of lashes over another — they all start to look the same, don't they? But bridal hair and makeup artist Molly Leahy from Blushing Brides has used a variety of false lashes on clients, knows what makes a great set stand apart from the rest, and has narrowed down her favorites to six false eyelash brands that are both affordable and long-lasting.

1. House of Lashes

House of Lashes
Image: House of Lashes

They may be a bit pricier than drugstore lashes, but Leahy says they're worth the extra cost because they can be reused multiple times over and still look brand new. "A slightly thicker band makes application a breeze and they have everything from very natural to extremely glam," Leahy says. "The Kardashians can be seen sporting these on Instagram a lot. These are only sold online at their website." (House of Lashes, between $10-$12).

2. Ardell Double Up

These drugstore-brand lashes are extremely affordable and perfect for people who love to experiment with lots of different types of lashes and looks. "I like the double ups because they look like they have a really beautiful mascara on them, both with the individuals and the strips," Leahy says (CVS, $6).

3. Sephora Brand Lashes

Sephora Brand Lashes

If you're looking to simplify your makeup routine, Leahy suggests Sephora Brand Lashes, which cut down on the time it takes you to apply mascara on top of false lashes so that they look more natural. "[These are] jet black so they give your eyes an added pop without having to add an extra coat of mascara," Leahy says (Sephora, $10).

4. Laura Mercier False Lashes

Minimalists or ladies who prefer not to look all glammed up will flip for Laura Mercier lashes, which Leahy says are neither too long, nor too thick. "These are the perfect lashes for blondes or anyone who wants a more natural looking lash," she says (Nordstrom, $18).

5. Kardashian Beauty Lashes

Kardashian Beauty Lashes

If Kim Kardashian is your beauty inspiration for all things eyelashes, you're in luck: These glam lashes get her stamp of approval. "These lashes are the same brand that Kim K. wore on her wedding day so you know they look good," Leahy says. "Plus they have a small band so you don't need to worry about lining it up a little off." (Ulta, $7).

6. MAC Lashes

MAC Lashes

It's hard to beat MAC Cosmetics when it comes to giving women a truly versatile collection of false lashes that suit the needs of both natural beauties and glamour girl divas. "They come in all shapes and sizes and have a very thin band which can make application slightly difficult but they look incredibly natural," Leahy says. "I would recommend the demi lashes for just the outer corners or to buy a pair, cut them in half and then apply one half at a time for easier application." (MAC Cosmetics, $17).

'Real-life Rapunzels' have never had haircuts... and they don't plan to

$

Why? These real-life Rapunzels have never cut their hair... ever.

It also started with 43-year-old Tere Lynn Svetlecich Russell. The Illinois has never cut her hair, which now measures in at 74 inches, and her decision to keep it long was influenced by her husband, Chip. He loves her long strands — and so does she — and so they've carried the tradition onto their three chidren. Daughter Callan's hair measures in at 37 inches, while Cendalyn's is 36 inches and Chesney's is 27 inches.

More: Spanish hairdresser cuts hair using swords, lighters

Each woman has a full, healthy-looking head of hair. We don't know what kind of magic potion they're drinking to keep it so healthy, but they do admit that it requires a ton of upkeep with each girl using at least a quarter bottle of conditioner each time they get in the shower. And while the three girls do wash their hair, Tera doesn't because there's just too much there to deal with.

Rapunzels

"I tried that once several years ago and my hair got so heavy with all of the water I landed on the shower floor," she told Barcroft TV.

The foursome even competes at long-hair competitions each year at the Illinois State Fair. Naturally, they always bring home the blue ribbons.

It's not surprising that none of them have visited a beauty salon. However, the brains behind Barcroft took them to their first salon visit in a not-so-subtle attempt to get them to chop some hair off for the camera. They weren't having it, but Tera said she's not going to stop her daughters from making their own decisions about their strands... when the time is right.

"It's not going to be my decision, it's going to be theirs," she said. "But I want them to be mature enough to make that decision for themselves."

In the mean time we have a request, ladies: Please write a book on hair care, because it seems like our hair never grows. We need the secrets!

One woman's makeup mirror almost burned down her house

Don't share mascara because it might cause infection. Watch out for allergic reactions.

These are important things to be aware of, but one woman has a warning for every makeup lover out there — and it's likely something you've never thought of before.

More: 10 Beauty experiences to give your makeup-addicted friends

"If any of you do your makeup in a little mirror in front of the window like I do, stash it away when you're done," Kasey Ault wrote on Facebook Dec. 1. "I just came home to a house full of smoke and found clear evidence of a fire on my desk."

makeup mirror fire

makeup mirror fire

The reason: She believes her makeup mirror reflected the sunlight off the magnified side. "I'm extremely lucky the fire didn't reach the battery of my iPad, my wooden desk, my laundry basket next to my desk," she continued. It miraculously was somehow contained. I had my sweet chihuahua asleep in that room, along with my other three dogs and five cats in the house. I could have lost them all."

More: This foolproof method will make any lipstick matte

Though it's not common, fires resulting from makeup mirrors have happened before. Earlier this year, a British couple's mansion was gutted after a makeup mirror reflected the light. "Cases of reflected light triggering fires in homes are rare, however we would urge the public to be aware of the potential danger of reflective surfaces intensifying the sun's rays," a rep for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service told the Daily Mail in February.

It's most likely to happen in the winter months because the "low-lying sun can shine on fixed surfaces for a prolonged period." So while it probably won't happen to you, it's better safe than sorry. Just stick your mirror in the drawer when you're done applying your makeup.

Plastic surgeon says he can now give nose jobs without surgery

$
0
0

It's absolutely something you should do if you want, but more plastic surgeons are developing alternatives that don't require anesthesia.

More: This foolproof method will make any lipstick matte

One of these treatments is the non-surgical nose job innovated by Hollywood's favorite plastic surgeon, Dr. Simon Ourian. He's the one who gave Kylie Jenner those famous lips, so he knows his stuff. But non-celebrities with non-celebrity incomes can still get his treatments. One Londoner, Joanna Della-Ragione, recently went through the nose procedure and the results are quite dramatic.

non-surgical nose job

non-surgical nose job

"I wasn't unhappy with my nose as it was but I didn't like the deep curve in the bridge and seeing the pictures on Dr. Ourian's Instagram page made me realize it could be refined and improved without too much pain and downtime," Della-Ragione wrote in an essay for the Daily Mail. "However, if you can get results that are as good as, or better than surgery without the danger of anesthetic and the resulting pain, bruising and downtime, then this procedure is well worth it."

More: What skin care experts do when they get a breakout

Basically, it's all about evening out the nose's proportions with fillers like Voluma and Restylane.

"Much like a trip to the dentist, the procedure isn't painful but it's hardly pleasant either," she continued. "There are a lot of injections but Dr. Ourian works fast and the whole thing is over in about five or six minutes."

non-surgical nose job 2

non-surgical nose job 2

"I prefer this strategy because it's far more direct," Dr. Ourian told her. "Surgery is very permanent. With this if the result is not as desired I can easily dissolve the filler, reversing the treatment." And though the before-and-after pictures show a big change, the real-life view is subtle enough that her friends didn't know the difference until she told them.

More: Russian makeup artist sparks intense backlash over her dead fish creations

"And I have to say, I'm very happy. This is the true magic of Dr. Ourian: The effects are subtle enough that you wouldn't notice a difference unless you were told, but at the same time the procedure has given my face an overall more refined finish," she said.

"There is no downtime and I go for dinner with friends that evening. They remark that I look well but no one even remotely notices the difference until I show them the video taken on my phone. They gasp in surprise and collectively ask for Dr. Ourian's contact details."

'Skinny' and 'plus size' are not the only body types

Yay for looking good and feeling great this summer! We have a huge range of swimwear styles for all body shapes. http://bit.ly/1StrNmb Posted by Target Australia on Wednesday, December 2, 2015
Notice anything unusual about this new bikini ad from Target? In an ideal world we'd all say, "Nope. Beautiful babes and cute suits!" and move on. But this ad is eye-catchingly different: It features an older woman, a plus-size woman, and a woman with boobs. Lots of non-modelesque ladies enjoy a swim and it's nice to finally see them represented in a swimwear ad. It shouldn't be revolutionary, but it is, and it's all part of a new movement in the fashion industry to feature body diversity in general and "curve" models in particular.
curve models 1a

curve models 1a

A curve model is a model who, regardless of clothing size, has curves: Bountiful boobs, a big butt, thick thighs, soft shoulders and/or a myriad of other body parts that don't fit into the stereotypical "model" look. And make no mistake, this isn't just another word for "plus size," as curvy has often been used in the past. Rather, it shows that women from a size zero to a size 36 can all be proportioned differently. Just because a lady is slim doesn't mean she has no hips, and just because a woman is bigger doesn't mean she can't have muscular arms.

Jordyn Woods 1a

Jordyn Woods 1a

"Curve modeling allows a variety of body types to work in an industry that you [would otherwise] need strict measurements for," said 18-year-old curve model Barbie Ferreira, who is often called the "queen of in-between" for her not-model-thin-but-also-not-plus-size measurements. But no matter what label you put on her, there's no doubt she's killing it in the fashion game with dozens of campaigns and hundreds of thousands of followers on social media.
Barbie Ferreira 1a

Barbie Ferreira 1a

It's that last part that makes her proud, as she loves showing that women who don't fit neatly into a certain category can be beautiful — not in spite of their differences but because of them.

As a woman who has a ridiculously hard time finding a pair of pants that fit my smaller waist but still flatter the killer quads and butt I work so hard for in the gym, this is a movement I can appreciate. I spend most of my life in leggings and skirts, both of which I love, but I wish that I had more options. And I would definitely love to see more women that look like me on websites and in ads, at the very least to help me see what the clothing might look like on a figure like mine.

More: Woman told she was 'undateable' shows off large birth mark she hid for years

Curve modeling isn't a trend I expect to see on the catwalk any time soon but it is one I hope to see on the streets — especially my street! — all the time. And while we're at it, let's see more women of color, older women, women with disabilities and other ladies that show the wonderful and beautiful diversity of womanhood.

This is what it takes to get those full celebrity lips (WATCH)

The fuller look is so pervasive that it's easy to forget that it takes needles, a talented doctor and hundreds of dollars to get the look.

Not sure you want to go through the pain? Brielle Biermann, the daughter of reality star Kim Zolciak, recently shared a video of her lip enhancement in an Instagram video — and yes, it looks painful.

Brielle Biermann lip filler

Brielle Biermann lip filler

"My lips are my biggest insecurity and I'm so happy w my results now!" she captioned the clip. "You truly are the best! even though I hate needles you made this very easy!

The "you" she is referring to is cosmetic dermatologist Simon Ourian, MD, the same guy responsible for Jenner's look. "I do micro-droplets, which distribute minute amounts of product," he told ELLE of how he creates a uniform look without lumps and bumps.

More: Create glam party makeup using 4 products in 5 minutes

While the technique has improved since the over-inflated fish lips of yore, there are still dangers of trying to rush things. Ourian recommends spacing out injections and "not [doing] everything in one session so it's done once a week, twice a week, once a month."

"Respect the anatomy of the lip. You cannot make someone's lips look completely different," he told ELLE, adding that his favorite fillers are Juvederm, followed by Restylane and Voluma. "If you want to have something that lasts a bit longer, choose Voluma. If you want something that lasts a few months, choose Juvederm."

More: Plastic surgeon says he can now give nose jobs without surgery

And if you can't — or don't want — fillers, you're not out of luck. Either wait for Jenner's new lip kit to come back in stock, or fake a fuller look with a few easy tips.
