This mascara has received amazing reviews, from “This mascara is literally my holy grail” to “WOW! I only ever use one coat of mascara and people thought I had put on fake lashes”. I have used this mascara for years and it certainly lives up to the hype. This mascara adds volume and length to be coveted. (Priceline, $14)

This palette full of nude hues becomes a go-to, as it has lighter shades for a subtle look and darker shades that can take you into special occasions. As one review said, "The colours are so easy to work with and have great colour payoff!" (Priceline, $13)

3. Revlon ColorStay Skinny Liquid Liner

eyeliner

With an ultra-thin brush tip, this product gives you the freedom to make subtle lines or thicker lines for a more dramatic look. Plus, it comes in multiple colours, including brown for a more natural look. To top it all off, it’s liquid, so it’s less likely to smudge throughout your busy workdays. (Priceline, $25)

5. Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

Foundation just might be the most important piece of your makeup routine and something you’ve always feared skimping on for fear of getting the wrong shade or it coming right off or being caked on. A million things can go wrong when it comes to foundation, but this one is solid. One review said it “goes on thin and smooth while providing great coverage” and "it smoothes out imperfections rather than highlighting them”. (Priceline, $23)

8 Hot summer fashion trends men just don't understand

$

I chatted with four different guys to get their take on the styles women are rocking this summer — and they seemed very confused — so I set them straight on exactly why these particular trends are totally amazing.

1. Pastel or neon hair color

pastel-hair

Image: Martha Sarah/Flickr

Pastel and neon hair colors are en vogue right now, and men have taken notice. "I don't think I'd love the neon hair on my girlfriend or wife, but it's a very hot look," said Tom, a badass foreign business mogul (or so he tells me). "It says a woman is a little wild and she knows how to command attention."

Spot on, Tom. That's exactly why this trend is fantastic. It's sexy, wild and perfect for a hot summer night at the beach or a music festival. And even if you wouldn't love the look on your girlfriend or wife, maybe it's because the kind of woman who wears this look doesn't want to be your girlfriend or wife.

2. Burnout skirts

burnout-skirt

Image: Burnout skirt (Anthropologie, $100)

I loved what my friend Daniel, an emergency room physician/amateur comedy writer, had to say about burnout skirts. "These don't bother me," he said. "They're almost like tear-away basketball pants. Am I gonna wear a long skirt? Nah, I'm gonna tear this bad boy off and go short skirt!"

I can see where Daniel is coming from, but he's missing the point. Women don't wear these because they're reminiscent of multi-functional menswear. We wear them because they have the allure of a miniskirt without the requirement to shave our legs.

3. Jumpsuits or rompers

jumpsuit

Image: Jumpsuit (Nordstrom, $68)

None of the guys seemed to love the jumpsuit or romper look. Zeke said, "They're not my thing. If women are going to rock this, they should just go full country with the cutoff overalls." Zeke is a realtor or accountant or something. I haven't completely figured it out.

But OK, I have to admit that I'll probably never wear a jumpsuit or a romper, but that's only because I'm over six feet tall and that would be asking for some serious cameltoe (just speaking the truth, ladies). But to Zeke I say this: You mention overalls like they're a bad thing. They're not. They require far less planning and agonizing over what to wear — which is exactly why women opt in to adorable weekend rompers.

More: Dear men, here's what we really think of your facial hair

4. Plunging one-pieces

one-piece

Image: Braided one-piece (Victoria's Secret, $49)

A plunging one-piece is one of the hottest looks of the summer, in the opinion of both men and women. "It's a dangerous look," opined Daniel. "If you can pull it off, it certainly attracts attention, but I think a wardrobe malfunction is inevitable."

Oh Daniel, we wear plunging one-pieces for the exact opposite reason. Compared to a tiny string bikini or a halter top that's held up by a perilous bow, the plunging one-piece is far less likely to bare more skin than we'd like at the local pool.

5. Goddess headbands

goddess-headband

Image: Rhinestone headband (Forever 21, $6)

Goddess headbands have a cool hippie-chic vibe, which is why I adore them with a casual sundress. The guys I talked with didn't really seem to understand them, though. "They're not terrible," said Tom. "But women look better without these things across their foreheads."

I bet Tom would change his tune if he knew the real reason why we wear headbands: To mask greasy hair and/or to dress up a ponytail that hides the fact that we haven't brushed our hair in three days.

6. Ponchos

summer-night-poncho

Image: Summer Nights Poncho (Bloomingdale's, $53)

Ponchos? "Yeah, I could take that girl camping," said my friend Gavin, the first — but not only — Libertarian Air Force pilot I ever dated. Surprisingly, all the men I spoke with said that they'd love to take a poncho-clad woman on a camping trip, or sit beside her next to a campfire on a beach.

And this, my friends, is exactly why ponchos exist. We women wouldn't tend to wear a poncho out on the town, but they are a great way to look dressed up on a casual weekend while feeling as cozy as we feel while wearing a sweatshirt.

7. Lace-up gladiator sandals

gladiator-sandals

Image: Golden knee high strappy gladiator sandals (Choies, $36)

The strappy sandal is a perennial hit with men and women alike, but guys seem to have a hard time understanding the lace-up gladiator sandal. "They're acceptable for a toga party," said Gavin.

I mean, yes, they are acceptable for a toga party. But they're also acceptable for any time we ladies would like to draw gaze to our lovely and shapely legs.

8. Colorful nail art

nail-art

Image: Kara Endres/SheKnows

Zeke scratched his head with confusion when I showed him a picture of nail art. "Generally, nails fall on the bottom of my list," he said. "As long as you have nails I am probably good."

Zeke, we don't paint our nails for men. We paint our nails with fabulous designs in order to fill our hearts with colorful joy when we look down to see them while typing on a computer keyboard or chopping veggies. It's the little things in life that hold the key to happiness, obviously.

Disabled mum's 'thank you' to plus-size bloggers becomes huge art project

I didn't even realise all the subjects were plus-size until I checked out Kathryn's blog, Murder of Goths. They were all just sassy, sexy women with great personal style.

But plus-size women they are — and for good reason.

As well as being an artist, a blogger and a mum of two, Kat is disabled. In her mid-20s, she began to suffer from pain in her back, which gradually spread to her arms, wrists and hands. It took six years to get a diagnosis of hypermobility, which can cause severe pain in some people, and make even the most mundane tasks very difficult.

“I’ve always been in love with art, viewing or creating it,” said Kat, who had to stop drawing due to the debilitating pain caused by her hypermobility, but it didn’t mean an end to her passion: “The diagnosis meant that I had some understanding of what would aggravate my joints and it made it a little easier to manage. For example, holding a pen puts a lot of strain on my wrists in a way that using a mouse doesn't. So I found a way to draw again.”

For Kat, one of the downsides of her condition was weight gain, which she “hated herself” for — until she discovered plus-size bloggers, and realised that her size didn’t mean her life had to be put on hold. “I started drawing plus-size bloggers as a way of saying thanks to these women, to show appreciation for what they do, and how supportive the plus-size community is,” Kat revealed. “I wanted to give back. It's turned into a massive project, and it doesn't look like it'll be stopping any time soon.”

One of Kat’s priorities is bringing her two young children up to be confident and happy, whatever life may throw at them: “I want to do my best to show them both that they have worth no matter how they look, or how well their bodies work. I hate the idea that either of them might harm themselves (like I did) because of thinking their bodies were wrong.”

For me, the sweetest part of this story is that Kat likes to surprise the bloggers she draws with the illustrations. "I always worry when I first upload them that one day someone is going to be annoyed at me for it," she admits. "But so far everyone has been wonderful. I've had some amazing reactions — in fact, some have made me a bit teary."

3 Classic ways to revive your makeup for a night out

$

To give you the best insight on how to revamp a day-to-night look, we have consulted the experts — including the celebrity makeup artist (and ex-wife of Johnny Depp) Lori Depp. We dug deep to come up with feasible ways to revive your makeup at the end of a long day, without looking like you piled on another layer, and tried them all ourselves.

Day to night makeup Pinterest

First, Kristie Glenn, owner of Blue Labels Boutique, recommends keeping your makeup bag stocked with the basics at all times: chandelier earrings, a bold statement necklace, a mini toothbrush, toothpaste and a rubber band for a quick updo. Here's what else you're going to need:

1. Lip change

Day to Night look: Lips

Lori Depp, celebrity makeup artist to the likes of Christina Applegate, Jessica Alba, Ryan Reynolds, Sting and more, believes that starting with the lips is key for an after-work reboot. Depp tells SheKnows, "The easiest, best way to go from day to night is to pump up your lip color. How dramatic you want to go depends on how much you apply. If you like reds or browns, do a nicely-defined line, then fill in your lips with your favorite color."

More: 11 beauty products you need to spring clean

Industry makeup artist Tymia Yvette, adds, "Whether it's red, purple or coral, a bold lip is your accessory — it's a way to dress up your look."

2. Dramatize your eyes

Day to Night look: Eyes

Depp suggested a subtle smoky eye pairs perfectly with a lighter lip color. Midwest skin care guru Leah Chavie of the Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique in Chicago agrees, "You can never go wrong with a smoky eye! It is simple, easy to pack in your purse and can change the day to night look in a flash. I love a metallic shade of gray this season and applying it around the edge of the eye as if it were eyeliner."

Amanda Gabbard, beauty expert and makeup specialist at the Guerlain Spa in the Towers of the Waldorf Astoria New York, describes her interpretation of the nighttime eye, "First, apply a darker, more dramatic line on the top lash line with an additional wing tip at the end for fun flair. You can also line the lower inner water rim for added nighttime drama. Second, use a small duo eyeshadow (one with dark and light shades) to create a smoky eye, using the darker shade in the lid's crease and the lighter color for highlight under the brow and along the inner corner of the eye."

3. Contour your face

Day to Night look: Face

The next step? Dust a shimmery highlighter over your cheekbones and brow bones to instantly lift your face, according to Fort Worth makeup artist and beauty expert Jennifer Trotter. Trotter recommends a powder illuminator to highlight the positive, adding that a shimmer highlighter "picks up candlelight beautifully" on a romantic date.

More: How to nail the strobing contour trend

Kathleen Jennings, CEO and founder of BeautyNow app, explains, "A quick swipe of powder highlighter on top of your cheekbones and down your nose adds some life back into your skin and makes you look dewy and fresh."

Finishing touches

Nails

Your total beautification includes more than just your pretty face. Jan Moran, creator of Sephora touchscreen FragranceIQ fragrance finders and author of fragrance-inspired books like Scent of Triumph, says, "Perfume is a quick way to put yourself in a night-out frame of mind. Match your perfume to your after-work style. For va-va-voom looks, choose a glamorous, sensual perfume to match. If your date night is casual, keep it fresh and outdoorsy, such as a citrus or woody scent."

Tiffany Barry, founder and Creative Director for Lillian Eve, insists that a glitzy nail polish is the only way to dress up an office look from day to night. To achieve her gorgeous five-minute mani above (exclusive to SheKnows), Barry used pastel peach Sweet Dreams, gold confetti Toast the New Year accent and a diamond topcoat. She shares, "You can easily get the look by dabbing a dot of glitter polish on the base of the nail and then gently moving the glitter pieces into place with a bobby pin. Applying a topcoat seals everything in for a night out. It's quick, nighttime glam and trendy."

Emma Watson talks to designers about equality in fashion (WATCH)

"Last September I launched a campaign at the UN in New York called HeForShe, which is about men coming in support of women and women supporting men to achieve gender equality,” Emma said in the video's introduction. "I want to get this conversation, this dialogue happening specifically within the fashion industry to ask the leading voices about gender equality.”

She then began to discuss gender equality in the fashion industry with top designers such as Stella McCartney, Jonathan Saunders and Erdem Moralioglu.

More: Emma Watson went on a "silent retreat" to get over heartbreak

Emma kicks things off by asking Saunders, "Are you a feminist?" to which he replies: "100 percent feminist." A good start, then.

"I think the fashion industry has a very big role to play. It has a huge voice and the voice can be adapted. We need to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable in who they are," Stella McCartney says when asked, "What are the biggest challenges facing women in fashion today?"

"I have seen some very positive steps toward equality in the industry," says Emma at the end of the video. "But I think there's a lot of racism, there's a lot of sexism. I'd really, really love to see a more diverse representation of women and men in any way that makes them feel empowered."

For a four-minute video, it's pretty impressive. It won't change lives, but it will get people talking — and dialogue is the first step towards doing.

Hewitt so generously shows in this video what it takes to get the coveted perfect selfie, but it's no easy feat.

Hot on Sam Cam’s heels is Taylor Swift, with ballerina Misty Copeland, Amal Clooney and Rihanna ranking nos. 3, 5 and 6 respectively. There’s another surprise entry at no. 4: Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Further proof that conservative — with a small or capital “c” — style is here to stay?

Kate Middleton was named Vanity Fair's Best Dressed in 2012, so we know the mag has a thing for elegant, reserved, upper-class British style. Sam Cam certainly has a covetable wardrobe (with Phillip Lim, Alexander McQueen, Erdem and Roksanda Ilincic nestling next to the Prime Minister’s suits — we imagine). Her look is classic but colourful, and she loves a print. Her style isn't everyone's cup of tea, but then nor is Rihanna’s.

“Of all the best-dressed lists, Vanity Fair’s is the most reliably deranged,” wrote Hadley Freeman in the Guardian this week. She may have a point. But aren't all Best Dressed lists completely arbitrary? Who decides that Taylor Swift dresses better than Emma Watson or Sienna Miller? It's all just a bit of fun, and we're sure Samantha Cameron is completely flattered — and just as surprised as everybody else.

More: Nicole Kidman receives ridiculous backlash for "frozen" Vogue cover (PHOTOS)

The Strangerland star graces the cover of the publication's September 2015 issue, and we might even go so far as to say it's one of her best shoots yet. Below are five reasons why we feel that way.

Nicole Kidman Vogue Australian shoot

Nicole Kidman Vogue Australian shoot

1. It's natural and not overly edited

In stark contrast to her Vogue U.S. cover, Kidman looks relaxed (and not overly Photoshopped) in the Australian edition as she poses with natural-looking makeup and wavy hair. These factors add to the overall charm of the cover.

2. It takes her back to her homeland

The cover is stunning and the inside spread is just as magical. Shot by Will Davidson at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, we love how Kidman got to come home for this shoot, making it more authentic.

While doing the shoot, Kidman was invited to participate in the sacred women's ceremony of the Aboriginal women in Uluru. According to Vogue Australia, she told the Anangu women how she felt "very connected [to the land]. That's why it's very beautiful for me and for us [her daughters] to be invited here and for her to dance with your children, we feel very connected, so thank you."

3. The fashion is not out of place

Vogue Australia's fashion director, Christine Centenera, has done a fantastic job with styling this shoot, picking neutral tones in natural fibres for Kidman to wear. The clothes are the perfect balance between high fashion and outback chic, ensuring that she doesn't look too out of place in the outback, and nothing about these looks feels forced.

4. It reminds us of the beginning of her career

The big, curly hair and the fresh-faced feel of these images take us back to the Days of Thunder days, when many of us were just beginning our love affair with Kidman.

More: Tom Cruise, Scientologists tapped Nicole Kidman's phone

5. It celebrates the Anangu people

The shoot focuses on so much more than just fashion. According to PopSugar, the shoot marks the 30th anniversary of the Australian Government handing back the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to its original owners, the Anangu people.

Redheads the world over invited to join Ireland's Redhead Convention

So if you have ginger, strawberry blonde, auburn — or any other wondrous shade of red — hair you should think about heading to Crosshaven, County Cork, this August for the sixth annual Irish Redhead Convention.

The convention began as a joke between red-haired siblings Joleen and Denis Cronin and has become a popular event on the redhead calendar, with thousands of fiery-haired men, women and children descending on the small village on the south coast of Ireland.

Among the activities on offer are carrot-tossing, ginger speed-dating, freckle counting, a redhead parade and cinema screenings. I'm not joking about any of those. Additionally certificates of genuine foxiness are handed out to those deemed worthy and the Redhead King and Queen will be crowned.

Don't have red hair? Don't worry, you can go too. The convention also welcomes "admirers" of red hair. So go and spread the ginger love.

Iggy Azalea's boob job shouldn't disqualify her as a body image role model

More: Iggy Azalea achieves a lifelong goal: A tasteful boob job (VIDEO)

This is a question Sydney-based woman Kristy Chong believes has a clear cut answer. She feels that the "Fancy" rapper should not be Bonds underwear ambassador after having a boob job.

Chong, who has her own line of underwear, Modibodi, for "real" woman, told Daily Mail Australia that Bonds and Azalea are sending a bad message.

"Iggy and Bonds just don't get it, they are promoting the exact image of this so called "standard beauty" that as a society we need to stop," she explained. "It is spreading a message to young girls that if you don't like your body, then get surgery, it's absurd."

More: Iggy Azalea debuts a new look that sparks plastic surgery rumors (PHOTOS)

Azalea's point-of-view is that body image is complicated, and you don't have to be "100 percent natural" to think positively about your body. She also told news.com.au that she thinks it's OK to "modify and upgrade and change (yourself)."

But Chong has a different view. She thinks that Bonds having Azalea as their ambassador is irresponsible because, "Bonds communicate with young girls, it's not women in their 20s like Iggy — who some have financial means behind them — these are girls that are entering into puberty seeing this type of messaging."

More: Iggy Azalea's diva attitude extends beyond her feud with Britney Spears

"I just don't think positive body imaging equals going under the knife — enough is enough and I think many other women and mothers would feel similarly," she continued.

Both sides of the argument make some very valid points, but as women we should have complete control over our bodies and decide what we do with them, and how we modify them, without fear of judgement. If Iggy Azalea got plastic surgery because it made her feel better about herself, then who are we to judge? It's important that as women we empower and encourage one another.

Does plastic surgery disqualify someone as a role model? I don't think so, but do you agree? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

7 Hair removal techniques ranked from worst to best

$
0
0

Since there's no point in removing unwanted hair if it's only going to expose skin that we're damaging in the process, it's high time we find out, once and for all, whether we should be shaving, waxing, getting electrolysis treatments — or none of the above.

Hair removal methods

We spoke with Dr. De Fiori, consultant and research dermatologist with the Rosacea Treatment Clinic, and esthetician Felicia Alva of Flutter Beauty, and got the scoop on the best and worst ways we can remove hair on our legs, bodies and faces.

7. Shaving

The easiest, and one of the cheapest, methods we rely on is also one that can leave our skin bumpy, stubbly and even bloody. "Because the razor cuts the hair at an angle, it has a tendency to regrow inward (causing ingrown hairs), particularly if hair is curly," De Fiori said. "The result is bumpy and inflamed, infected skin which will not resolve until the ingrown hair is removed."

More: What happened when I shaved with coconut oil

De Fiori adds that possible complications from shaving can include scarring, breaking fine capillaries when removing the hair and permanent dark marks (hyperpigmentation) after healing has completed. One possible benefit? "The razor itself does have a moderate exfoliating effect, removing dead surface skin cells as you shave, which leaves skin smoother."

6. Hair removal creams

Products like Veet and other hair removal creams are similar to permanent solutions, according to De Fiori, and can dissolve hair at the skin level. Since the hair remains in the follicle and is burned away evenly, there is less chance that ingrown hairs will develop. Sounds great, right? Hold that thought. "The main risk with these products is chemical burns because they are strongly alkaline," De Fiori said. "A burn is more likely if you leave the product on for longer than directed on the packaging. Some hair types are not removed effectively within the directed timeframe for use therefore patients will leave them on longer. By the time the hair is dissolved the skin is also burnt." Know your skin — if it's sensitive, it may be best to stay away from these creams. And, if you do use them, make sure you're removing them thoroughly or you risk developing a "slow burn." Ouch!

5. Electrolysis

De Fiori says electrolysis has pretty much been replaced by lasers, which are "faster and more efficacious." If you're still devoted to this method, be aware that risks include "scarring, infection and hyperpigmentation."

4. Threading

A lot of women are opting to have their eyebrows and/or the little annoying hairs on their faces removed using threading instead of waxing or shaving. De Fiori says this is the method least likely to damage skin, as it is gentler on skin than tweezing, but it has a major downside: It's only feasible for use on small areas of the skin. Unless, I guess, you're one of few women who love torture and can deal with the insane pain of getting your legs threaded (we won't judge you).

3. Waxing

Both De Fiori and Alva are in agreement about waxing, especially when it comes to the eyebrow area: It can cause major skin damage. "Waxing removes a top layer of skin every time you use it," Alva said, adding that the thin, delicate skin around the eyes has no oil glands and requires as gentle a method as possible. "It's OK on the body, but it's too rough on skin in the eye area." Alva recommends tweezing, which gives an esthetician more control over your brows and gives you a fuller, more natural brow.

More: Retinol products and the dangers of use when waxing

De Fiori cautions women with rosacea and other inflammatory skin disorders, such as psoriasis and eczema, to avoid waxing altogether because, although it weakens hair growth, it causes hair growth to actually accelerate during the first three to six months, which increases the need to wax more and can lead to hyperpigmentation.

2. Eflornithine hydrochloride cream

Women who feel they have been plagued by little chin hairs or thick facial hair can now benefit from this effective, but costly, prescription product. After approximately two months of twice daily use, the cream slows down hair growth, according to De Fiori. "Some possible more common side effects are temporary redness, stinging, rash or folliculitis (inflamed, bumpy hair follicles)," De Fiori said. "This is a rather expensive product, however it is FDA approved and reduces the need for other hair removal methods."

1. Laser treatments

Ding, ding, ding — I think we have a winner! De Fiori says that, although older lasers can damage darker skin tones and weren't effective on very light hair, modern lasers can be used to treat an individual's skin and hair type. After a treatment, hair remains in the skin, but will fall out after four to eight days. And how is this for an incredible added bonus: Depending on the laser used, you may even experience some skin rejuvenation due to the formation of new collagen. A method that removes hair and can fight fine lines? Yes, please.

So, let's review: Modern lasers are De Fiori's preferred method, shaving beats out depilatory creams, waxing should only be used on skin types that do not have a history of reacting to it, and a killer, long-lasting combo worth trying on facial hair: threading and eflornithine hydrochloride cream.

Adios, unwanted hair!

During a recent interview Delevingne confessed to not being a fan of makeup, revealing that it's actually the downside of her job.

And she's true to her word. A glance at Delevingne's Instagram account proves that she is very happy in her own skin, frequently posting photos sans makeup. Below are seven of her best.

6 Best self-tanners under $15

For easy application:

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist (Ulta, $11)

PROS: The benefit of a misting spray like this is that you keep your hands and fingers out of the mix. This superfine mist goes on so easily, and it’s really very low-fuss — no rubbing-in required. The color is great and streaking is minimal, if at all. Impatient girls, take note: It takes a good several hours, or even overnight, for the full effects to show.

CON: It’s almost impossible to not get any spray on your floor (or furniture), so it’s best to cover any surfaces you don’t want to “tan” with old towels or similar. No biggie!

THE SMELL: The scent is interesting ... it’s kind of woodsy, or cigar-like, which sounds odd but isn’t bad. And it fades quickly!

TIP: Don't spray your feet. Enough of the mist will land on your feet anyway.

For dark, pro results:

Cocoa Brown 1-Hour Tan Mousse

Cocoa Brown 1-Hour Tan Mousse (Rickysnyc.com, $14)

PROS: This is a cult favorite — you can check online for all the glowing beauty blogger reviews! A quality product for an affordable price, this light mousse formula is really easy to apply. The longer you leave it on, the darker the tan, so the first time you try it, you can kind of test it out. The color is great.

CON: Though it makes the formula flexible in terms of darkness, having to leave it on for at least an hour,  and then wash it off, makes for a bit of a time commitment.

THE SMELL: It advertises a “Floral Tahitian Gardenia” scent, which is fair enough, I guess. To me it smells like someone’s roommate’s nice conditioner, which works!

TIP: Use gloves when you apply so you don’t have to worry about washing your hands.

For an instant bronze:

Sephora Collection Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist

Sephora Collection Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist (Sephora, $6 for 1.5 oz)

PROS: You can see exactly where you’ve applied this mist because it delivers a soft bronze glow immediately! Then the self-tanner develops over time, creating a nice, light tan. Pretty cool.

CON: None!

THE SMELL: Smells great! It’s quite tropical, but not overpowering.

TIP: It’s very fast-drying, which is great, but be ready with a soapy washcloth if you make any mistakes. This stuff works well to layer; start with one application and then add another the next day to go darker.

For gradual build-up:

Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiance Gradual Tanner & Body Toner

Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiance Gradual Tanner & Body Toner (Rickysnyc.com, $15)

PRO: Great for self-tanning ‘fraidy cats (like me), this stuff works sloooooooowly and graaaaaaadually builds up coverage over time (like, over days), so you never have to worry about suddenly resembling an Oompa Loompa or someone’s crazy card shark granny in Florida. The formula is more lightweight than what you might expect from a Nivea product (it feels almost gel-like), which means it smoothes on really easily. Just wash your hands and let your color develop over time.

CON: Hmm. Not really any cons here, unless you’re looking for a fast-acting, dark tanning solution, but then you should try a different product altogether!

THE SMELL: At first it’s just a nice, light scent — almost a little tropical/coco-buttery. After several hours, I did notice a lingering scent that anyone who has used a similar type of gradual tanner will recognize, but it’s not overpowering, and I actually like it. It was gone by the next morning.

TIP: Rub this on at night, and wake up to a new glow!

For an instantly glowing face, plus SPF:

Australian Gold Faces Sheer Coverage Kona Infused, With Gradual Self Tanner, SPF 45

Australian Gold Faces Sheer Coverage Kona Infused, With Gradual Self Tanner, SPF 45 (Walgreens, $9)

PRO: This 3-in-one product (self-tanner, bronzer and SPF 45) is an Allure Best of Beauty Winner, and for good reason. You’ll get an immediate glow, while the self-tanner works its magic, and you’ll also be protected from the sun!

CON: None.

THE SMELL: Like all Australian Faces products, it’s got a strong tropical scent. Cha cha cha!

TIP: Don’t go crazy with this — if, say, you’re going out to the beach for the day, bring along some regular sunscreen to use when it’s time to reapply protection.

For face, with skin care

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Glow Pads

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Glow Pads (Sephora, $12 for 6 pads)

PRO: Self-tanner plus anti-aging! Build up a pretty, natural-looking tan while delivering some major skin care ingredients to your face. These pads are soaked in a formula that contains beta-hydroxy acids, which exfoliate, tighten pores, eliminate blackheads and help fade existing sunspots. Meanwhile, active vitamin D gives you a sun-kissed glow while enhancing the benefits of the other vitamins and antioxidants.

CON: These might be too strong for super sensitive skin; definitely do a patch-test first. And, if you use more than a couple a week, it could get expensive.

THE SMELL: There is a faint “self-tanner” smell, but it’s not bad at all

18-Year-old model with Down syndrome will change the NYFW game

Brewer was the first person with Down syndrome to participate in a major fashion show, and thanks to this news, we know she definitely won't be the last. Finally, thanks in part to designer Carrie Hammer's show message "role models over runway models," the fashion world is recognizing that beauty comes in many forms.

MoreJamie Brewer is about to make history at New York Fashion Week — here's why

Case in point: young Ms. Stuart, who gained notoriety when her Facebook and Instagram modeling pictures went viral last month. Where some might feel compelled to hide what makes them different, Stuart, from Brisbane, Australia, believes showing it boldly through modeling is the best way to get the world to accept it. To quote her Facebook page, "I hope through modelling I can change societies view of people with Disabilities."

Madeline Stuart

Madeline Stuart

And boy, was she right. She has amassed more than 100,000 followers, all of whom send her support and admiration, and now she has been invited to strut down one of the fashion world's more notable runways. She's walking specifically for MODA in association with the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Her mother couldn't be prouder, but she's not surprised by her daughter's success. She believes it needed to happen, because the world is finally ready to hear her message.

"The modeling is fun and everything, but it's just a vehicle to get the message out. I think that's why she's done so well... because this isn't about us. It's about fighting the fight for all the people out there that are a bit different that need to be loved," her mother Roseanne Stuart told Cosmo.

Her mother is most encouraged by the wave of positivity that's flooding her daughter's social media pages. It's showing her that the world's come a long way since Maddy was little. "This is the next generation! These are young girls who are never going to grow up being discriminatory! When Maddy was born, I can remember walking around the street with people abusing me, saying she should be in an institution."

MoreDesigner honored for featuring girl with Down syndrome on catalog cover

Based on reactions to Maddy on her social media pages and this incredible opportunity to be featured in Fashion Week, it seems the world is finally embracing people with disabilities. Maddy and her mom are thrilled to be able to ride the wave of acceptance, especially considering how long the road has been to reach this point.

And a large part of how they've made it this far is Maddy's unflinching positivity. "You know why Maddy is so loved? Because she loves herself. [Maddy] truly loves herself. She'll tell you she's gorgeous. She'll tell you she's wonderful. I mean, I tell her every day how great she is, but she truly believes it." That is an extraordinary way to be, especially considering that she's working in an industry that often creates body issues in people without disabilities.

With all this love and encouragement behind her, coupled by her own unwavering confidence, I know Maddy will dominate Fashion Week this year — and any other modeling job that's sure to come her way.

7 Makeup artist tricks everyone should know

$
0
0

Makeup is fun. Makeup is beautiful. And believe it or not, makeup can be easy. Most makeup artists achieve some level of success because they have figured out what works, and they stick to it. What this means for the rest of us humans who just want to put something pretty on our faces is: Makeup really isn't that hard, once you figure out what you're doing. With a few interesting tricks in your arsenal, you can look more like JLo and less like a preteen dolled up for the homecoming dance when you leave the house.

1. Apply orange concealer

If you're not going for that just-rolled-out-of-bed death look on Monday morning (and let's be honest, who is?), you may want to laminate celebrity makeup artist Dedra Whitt Dakota's tip and hang it on your mirror. Dakota, founder of the new skin care line dedra beauty, insists that the right shade of concealer is the most important part of your morning makeup routine — especially when you've been tossing and turning all night.

Try it: "Concealer is the most important makeup product for insomniacs because it adds 10 hours of sleep to your appearance. Placement is key, as well as choosing the right color concealer. Because the hue of dark circles is blue, choose a concealer that has a warm (almost has a bit of orange) undertone as it cancels out the blue," she says. "Choose a concealer that is the same color or a shade lighter than your skin tone or foundation. Looking into the mirror, tip your chin down. You will really see where the darkest part of the circle is by doing that. That's where you want to place the concealer. Then blend up from there, into the lash line. That will give you the most bang for your buck and look the most natural."

2. Brush your lips

Come again? It may surprise you to know that one of my favorite things to do when I have down time and am feeling a little dull is to get out my trusty toothbrush and go to town on my lips. First and foremost, brushing your lips feels good. It also exfoliates dead skin that can make your lipstick look cakey and obvious. Last but certainly not least, brushing your lips will allow lip moisturizers to penetrate more deeply — creating the perfect canvas for any color you apply to your pout.

Try it: Brush lips with a soft, moist toothbrush or warm washcloth in a circular motion for two minutes. Slather on your favorite lip balm or moisturizer and allow the product to penetrate. Then apply lip liner and lipstick, with optional gloss, for a flawless finish.

3. Make your own bronzer

With one quick Amazon search, you'll realize there are literally thousands of bronzers to choose from, so you might as well quit while you're ahead. Margina Dennis, celebrity makeup artist who has worked on the beautiful mugs of Lea Michele, Tom Brady (yes, Tom Brady) and more, says that mixing up your own bronzer at home is easy if you have a few key ingredients in your spice cabinet.

Try it: Dennis says, "Cocoa and cinnamon powders mixed together [can] create an emergency bronzer."

4. Mix unlikely products

As a wise instructor once told me in beauty school, "Blend, blend, blend is your friend, friend, friend." I have never forgotten this silly little rhyme, which served me surprisingly well in my makeup artist career. When in doubt, blend everything: products, colors, textures and trends. Not only does blending make your makeup application look natural and polished, but it gives you the opportunity to experiment with new colors on the down low.

Try it: Dab a few spots of your favorite trendy lipstick (hot pink or deep red) on the palm of your hand. Blend well with a quarter-sized amount of tinted moisturizer and apply as cream blush. Don't you look fabulous.

5. "Remove" makeup with foundation

This insider makeup artist tip sounds counterintuitive, but soon it will all make sense. Joanna Schlip, Physicians Formula celebrity makeup artist and recent judge on BLUSH: The Search for the Next Great Makeup Artist, tells SheKnows that using foundation as makeup remover (and we use that term loosely here) is one of the best tricks to have up your sleeve when you need to freshen up on the run. Don't remove what you've already applied; just refresh with tinted moisturizer to create a clean slate.

Try it: Schlip explains how to substitute foundation for makeup remover when refreshing your face after work, "If you use makeup remover, it will take away the concealer, foundation and setting powder. Unless you are good at blending, it's going to look like there is a blank spot on your face. Use a moisturizing foundation. Swirl it around and reapply."

6. Sniff rubbing alcohol

There's a strange phenomenon that occurs when you bring a mascara brush or sharp eye pencil anywhere near an unsuspecting eyeball — one eye may go rogue and start to water like a broken fountain. Sensitive, watery eyes make a beautiful eye makeup application damn near impossible, until you discover one of the top celebrity makeup artist's tricks of the trade.

Try it: As Jacqueline Ryan learned when repping celebrity makeup artist clients, "If your eyes tend to water, pour some rubbing alcohol onto a cotton swab and sniff it. It stops your eyes from watering so you can finish doing your eyes without smudges."

7. Use mascara for eyeliner

How many times have I forgotten my eyeliner on a trip or carelessly misplaced it in the abyss that is my purse? Too many to count. Makeup guru Dennis says that the answer to my problem lies right under my nose.

Try it: According to Dennis, "Mascara used with a liner brush can substitute for eyeliner in a fix."

Charging more for bigger bras is just plain wrong

$
0
0

An editor at Styleite recently discovered that Victoria's Secret is charging about $4 more for bra sizes DD and larger. For bras that are already expensive, the $4 difference might seem small, but it's just another way large-breasted women are made to feel gross and "other."

The reasoning the company will likely give is that bigger sizes require more fabric. And while that is almost certainly true, we all know the parts and labor add only so much to the cost of a bra and that companies are making a killing on the difference. Even for a 32A. And really, few other companies change their pricing based on size, so what is Vicky up to?

More: Dear men, here's what we really think of your facial hair

As a woman with a larger-than-normal chest, I feel this strongly. It is bad enough that we busty ladies have to suffer through the crappy drawer that is almost always full of lime green castoffs and the dubious remains of the sexier bras. But now we have to pay more for the honor? No thanks.

The truth is, ladies, if you are bigger than a C cup, the traditionally cute-bra stores may not be for you. Once you realize this, a whole world opens up. Specialty stores are more expensive, it's true. But who doesn't want a little pampering? Instead of feeling freakish in our curvy glory, we are made to feel pampered and special. We are fitted and treated like the women we are rather than the weirdos who didn't manage to stop our mammary growth in time to qualify as average.

More: Wearing crop tops doesn't empower me as a plus-size woman

I'd rather pay $100 for a high-quality bra from a place that embraces the bosom versus a place where I have to get my bras from the dusty back of the dingiest shelf. Pay more for higher quality? Maybe. Pay more when others pay less for the same product? No thanks.
