Alcohol ink nails are the perfect bohemian look for festival-goers

$

0

This time I chose blue, white and gold ink. The results left my nails looking like shiny lapis stones.

Nails

Alcohol ink manicure

What you will need:

  • Alcohol inks (brands: Adirondack or Piñata); I used Piñata.
  • Small pieces of sponge (to apply ink and alcohol)
  • Tweezers (to hold sponges while applying)
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Small glass or liquid containers (for mixing colors)
  • Alcohol blending liquid (for blending gold, silver and dense colors)
  • Tape or "That's a Wrap" liquid nail tape (to protect your skin from getting color on it)

Instructions:

  1. Select colors.
  2. Paint nails white and let dry. I chose Essie's Blanc. You can also use a white gel (cure and wipe off tacky residue).
  3. Using sponge piece, dip into desired ink color and dab on nail. You can apply as much as you want (not too dark; you can always apply more as you go).
  4. Using a fresh sponge piece, dip sponge in isopropyl alcohol (soak it well), dab onto the color you have just applied and watch it start to run.
  5. You can re-apply color ink and alcohol as much as you like until you are happy with the pattern you have created. Remember: There is no right or wrong. Art happens!
  6. Once you are satisfied with your new creation, apply top coat (gel or polish).

Now you're ready to rock it out, festival style.

5 Ways to combat the effects of stress on your face

$

You look in the mirror and all you see is dull, tired skin and more wrinkles. With a few makeup and styling tricks, you can easily combat the effects of even the busiest life.

1. Moisturize

The first step is to moisturize. Skin needs moisture to help heal itself. Plus, a moisturizing cream with SPF helps protect your skin all day while reducing some redness and puffiness.

2. Line your eyes

You might reach for your favorite black liner, but don't. Instead, opt for a beige liner. Use the beige under your lower lashes to help counter redness and brighten eyes. You can use white too, but it may stand out too much for some complexions. You can still use black or any other color on your top lashes.

3. Brighten and even out skin

While concealer does help, a lightweight luminizing foundation works even better. Look for foundation designed to even out skin tone and minimize pores. The luminizing aspect helps brighten skin so your face looks more awake. The lightweight formula prevents a cakey look. Garnier's BB Cream line works perfectly for this. Adding a thin layer of concealer under your eyes finishes the look.

4. Add some color

Blush can be your best friend when you look tired. Use a light rose shade with hints of gold or shimmer to give your cheeks natural-looking color. This brightens your entire face and makes you look more youthful. Avoid more orange or beige shades as these can have the opposite effect.

5. Correct and prevent

Of course, the best way to combat the harsh effects of a busy lifestyle on your face is to use a good anti-aging night cream. Garnier Ultra Lift Miracle Sleeping Cream Anti-Age + Anti-Fatigue Night Cream is designed to gradually erase the unwanted effects of too much stress and too little sleep. It absorbs quickly and works overnight to help reduce wrinkles and repair your skin's natural moisture barrier.

Adenosine, rare plant extracts and lavender essential oil moisturize, soothe and energize skin so you look more refreshed. You can notice some effects after one use. Continued use equals less wrinkles and more revitalized skin.

It's far easier to correct the signs of premature aging and fatigue than it is to simply cover them up every day. Add this to your routine and you'll be amazed at the difference one little cream can make.

Short on sleep? Use these beauty tricks and no one will know

$

I'm often lucky to get three straight hours of sleep. That means in the morning I don't look my best. Luckily I've found a few beauty tricks that can save me a day of being asked, "do you feel OK?"

11 Steps

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

I really think being awake in the middle of the night sucks moisture out of my skin. The end result is that I look older, my skin is lackluster and any makeup that I apply isn't even and sinks into fine lines. If you know that you'll be having a long night, plan ahead with a super-hydrating night cream. If you forget, you can still apply a light layer of that night cream in the morning under your makeup.

Product recommendation:

Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream Anti-Age + Anti-Fatigue Night Cream (Garnierusa, $17)

2. Caffeine is your friend

Under-eye bags are a dead giveaway that you didn't get a good night of sleep. A good eye cream, especially if it contains caffeine, can decrease the puffiness and temporarily tighten the entire area.

Product recommendation:

Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller (Garnierusa, $13)

3. Color correction

Dark circles under your eyes? Don't reach for your concealer first! Instead, grab a color corrector to neutralize the color of the bags. Colors that are opposites on the color wheel will cancel each other out. The bags are usually blue based, so using a peach or orange tone on them helps hide them! Use a peach if you have a light skin tone, or go for a more vivid orange tone if your skin tone is darker or your under-eye circles are more intense. Using a fingertip, lightly pat the corrector onto the discoloration only. Cover it up with foundation or concealer.

Product recommendations:

FACE Stockholm Corrector Kit (Facestockholm, $32)
NYX Color Correcting Palette (NYXcosmetics, $12)

4. Concealer with illumination

It is tempting to just reach for a heavy-duty concealer to cover up the effects of a long night, but you'll likely just make yourself look worse! Start with the color correction, and then reach for a lightweight concealer with a bit of light diffusion. Because you've neutralized your under-eye circles, you no longer need the heavy coverage. The light shimmer in these products helps reflect light, making any imperfections less obvious.

When applying, don't only apply to the half moon under your eye. Instead, create an upside-down triangle with the points at either corner of your eye and the tip as the side of your nose. Fill that entire area with concealer and blend it well up onto the side of your nose, the inner corner of your eye and up to your lash line.

Product recommendations:

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch Highlighter (YSLbeautyus, $42)
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer (Maybelline, $8)

5. Even more illumination

Illuminating doesn't stop at your under-eye area! Depending upon your usual routine, rotate in an illuminating primer, foundation or finishing powder.

Product recommendations:

COVER FX Illuminating Primer (CoverFX, $38)
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Foundation (YSLbeautyus, $57)
Too Faced Candlelight Pressed Powder (Toofaced, $30)
e.l.f. Studio High Definition Undereye Setting Powder (Eyeslipsface, $3)

6. Brow lift

Filling in your eyebrows is probably not the first thing that you think of when you need to look more awake, but this small step will make you look much more polished and really opens up your eye area! Use a brow pencil lightly in your brow, and then follow it up with a little concealer or a brow highlighter right underneath. Blend with a fingertip.

Product recommendations:

NYX Eyebrow Push Up Bra (NYXcosmetics, $10)
It Cosmetics Your Brows But Better Pencil (Itcosmetics, $24)

7. Change your eyeliner

Instead of lining your upper and lower lash lines with the same black eyeliner that you usually reach for, reach for a brown liner and a smudge brush. The brown isn't as harsh as the black, making it perfect for days that you aren't looking your best. Line only your upper lash line, as close to the base of the lashes as you can, and smudge with the brush to soften the look. Your eyes will be emphasized, but you'll avoid the midday eyeliner smudged under your eyes.

Product recommendations:

Sephora Pro Smudge Brush #11 (Sephora, $18)
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Damsel (Stillacosmetics, $20)

8. Lashes

Who doesn't love long and lush eyelashes? Lightly curl your lashes and then apply a lengthening mascara with a wand that grabs every last lash. Your eyes will look larger and more open, helping you look much more awake.

Product recommendations:

Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara (Toofaced, $23)
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes 5 Star Mascara (Charlottetilbury, $29)
CoverGirl LashBlast Volume (Covergirl, $8)

9. Open your eyes

Just when you think that you've finished your eyes, there's one last step! A little highlighter to the inner corner of your eye will brighten your eyes and make them pop!

Product recommendations;

Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener (Smashbox, $20)
RMS Beauty Living Luminizer (RMSbeauty, $38)

10. A healthy flush

When I've been up most of the night, I am pale and washed out the next day. I need to add a bit of color to my skin, but going overboard will backfire and make me look even worse. I've found that a light pinky-peach blush with a touch of shimmer is perfect for my cheeks. I also grab a larger powder blush and will hit my forehead and down the center of my face. The larger brush means the color is much more subtle, but it makes a big difference in how awake I look.

Product recommendations:

It Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette (Itcosmetics, $38)
MAC Mineralize Blush in New Romance (MACcosmetics, $27)

11. A lippie with color

The morning after a rough night isn't the time for that dark, vampy lipstick you've been wanting to try out, or for the nude lippie that is just barely darker than your own skin tone. Instead, reach for a lip color that is darker than your own lips, whether it is a pretty rosy tone or a bright statement pink. The punch of color will brighten up your face.

Product recommendations:

Burt's Bees Lip Crayon in Carolina Coast (Burtsbees, $9)
NARS Lipstick in Schiap (Narscosmetics, $27)
Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Emily (Sephora, $19)

I'm still convinced any perfect pony is thanks all in part to Photoshop. That's why we made messy buns trendy instead, because everyone was sick of trying and failing to get the perfect ponytail.

But SheKnows Beauty Expert Allison Pynn has a trick up her sleeve that is giving me a total "duh" moment. Essentially, you create two ponytails and the result is a sort of beauty optical illusion. But don't take my word for it. Watch the video above! (Did I mention she's also incredibly entertaining?)

The best cruelty-free vegan lip products

Vegan Lipstick

When I switched over my skin care products, I started noticing a really positive effect on my skin, including completely getting over my hormonal acne. This was a breakthrough moment and I cheerfully switched over almost all of my hair and skin products. But by far the most difficult one to let go of was lipstick. I love, love, love a great red. Words can't describe how amazing I feel in my signature red: Guerlain Kiss Kiss in Red Hot (above). I feel a little like I could conquer the world wearing that thing. But it's also not cruelty-free and definitely not toxin-free. So I set out to test the best natural, vegan lip products! These picks are organic, not tested on animals, are formulated with ingredients that you can pronounce and, frankly, are good enough to eat (because that's what you do with lippies).

1. Best red

Vegan Lipstick

Gressa Lip Boost in Aux Rouge (petitvour.com, $26)

I've been wearing Gressa Aux Rouge for a few weeks now. It's more of a lip stain, so it gives a sheer wash of pinkish red rather than a classic matte finish, which makes it a perfect transition to warmer weather. It's formulated with cocoa butter and coconut oil, but since this one is mostly about its gorgeous, highly pigmented color, you might want to layer a balm on top for a more hydrated finish.

2. Best coral

Vegan Lipstick

Pacifica Devocean Natural Lipstick in Rebel Sol (pacificabeauty.com, $14)

I love Pacifica products because their ingredients list reads like something I would eat: sunflower oil, shea butter, coconut oil, beetroot extract. And this lovely, vibrant coral color (not too orange, not too pink) is just perfect for spring: lighter than a classic matte red, but no less feminine or pretty.

3. Best nude

Vegan Lipstick

MarieNatie LoveMarie Lip Gloss in Flair (marienatie.com, $18)

I'm not really a pale-lip girl, but this vegan, organic and gluten-free lip gloss by MarieNatie might make me a convert. It's a soft pinkish beige with just the right amount of shine, and as a bonus, it smells heavenly like French vanilla. It's also composed of a delicious blend of botanical ingredients like coconut oil, grape seed oil, cocoa butter, carrot powder, grapefruit seed extract and more.

4. Best natural

Vegan Lipstick

French Girl Mineral Lip Tint in Rose Noir (petitvour.com, $11)

If you are looking for "natural lips, but better," try French Girl Mineral Lip Tint. This super-moisturizing lip balm tints your lips with just a hint of plummy red color. It has no synthetic ingredients or dyes, and is full of yummy ingredients like olive oil, rose oil and geranium essential oil. This one is always in my purse for hydrating my lips on the go.

5. Best wine

Vegan Lipstick

Vegan Lipstick

Studio 78 On Se Marie Liquid Lipstick in Velvet Wedding (naturalphilosophie.com, $31)

This très chic French brand is all natural and mostly organic (avocado and apricot oil based), but you wouldn't guess it from the highly pigmented liquid lipstick and its serious attitude. Seriously, I felt very couture and sophisticated wearing this deep wine, which strikes a perfect balance of brown and purple tones. It has a sponge-tip applicator which makes putting it on really easy.

Which one of these would you try? Any favorite cruelty free/natural/vegan lippies you can't live without? And let me know if you have any questions!

3 Practices that will help you love your post-baby body

$

I'm so glad I did it, though I was not completely spared from seeing the number on the scale, since I was weighed at my many OB-GYN visits. In fact, at one memorable appointment, I'd gained 10 pounds!

Whenever I found myself freaking out a bit, though, I'd remind myself to do what I knew worked for me: Eat as many whole foods as possible (which sometimes meant not that many, depending on where I was in my pregnancy), move as much as I could and remember that I was currently growing another human being inside my body.

After my daughter was born, my body was the last thing on my mind. I was exhausted, covered in spit up and barely had time to shower, so I had no time for worries about my weight. Instead, I just ate as well as I could and moved as often as felt good.

My daughter is 10 months old now, and I'm back in the clothes I wore before I got pregnant (except my bras... ahem, breastfeeding makes that impossible), but that most certainly does not mean my body looks the same.

My linea nigra is still present, and I don't know if it will ever go away. The stretch marks that made their appearance in the final few weeks of my pregnancy (just when I thought I'd make it through without them!) are still etched into my lower belly, though they are not the angry red they once were. And about that lower belly, it sags. I am not sure I can ever do enough planks or eat enough kale to tighten the skin back up. And I'm totally, completely fine with that.

If you are struggling to accept your new shape, or are pregnant and concerned about loving what you're left with once your child is in your arms, here are three ways to love your post-baby body right now:

1. Compose a body appreciation list

Write down all of the reasons for which you deeply appreciate your body. Number one is probably that it carried your child. Note as many things as you can think of, including the fact that you can smell the spring flowers or hear the band playing your favorite song (yes, your nose and ears are part of your wonderful and amazing body!). You'll be surprised by how many things you can appreciate about your body right this second, no matter what it looks like. For even more inspiration, print the list out and hang it somewhere you’ll see it regularly.

2. Challenge your negative thoughts

The reason you want your body to look a certain way? Because your thoughts tell you it "should." And where do most of these thoughts come from? Probably media, magazines and maybe even family or friends. Every time you have a negative thought about your body, question it. Why do I think this? Is it true? What thought would feel better? Trust me, walking around with "I am taking the best care of my body possible" will serve you much better than "I hate my body and must lose weight ASAP."

3. Think about how your child sees you

You are your baby's whole entire world. To her, you are perfect. She needs you more than anything else in the world. As she grows older, she looks to you as an example of how to treat herself. Would you rather teach her that she should love and respect her body, mind and soul, or teach her that bodies are meant to be stressed and starved and hated?

Artist uses hair from cancer patients to make jewelry (PHOTOS)

She calls the art project "Tangible Truths" and what she does is collect the hair her subjects lose as a result of chemotherapy and transforms it into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Each piece is unique and captures something very personal about the woman from whom it came. She explains the importance of turning the loss experienced during cancer into something tangible on her website:

"The artefacts that I create of the hair, mark this transformation and disclose a new access for the people involved to the commonly overwhelming situation. The change becomes visible, not only as the lost hair but further as its transformation into something valuable. Something abstract and difficult to comprehend becomes discernible, becomes tangible. The loss creates something new and the helplessness is juxtaposed against a tangible artefact. This object can be the introduction to an exchange of difficult feelings that are otherwise hard to communicate."

Each piece is different, and can thus take several days to a few weeks to complete. Paulsen works closely with each woman who commissions her in order to create a piece of jewelry that truly captures her essence. She's also happy to make pieces for family and friends in order to help strengthen the bond between loved ones during this difficult time.

It is important to Paulsen to connect with the women for whom she creates these pieces. Here is a brief account of her experience with Mary Beth, her first client.

They met on one of the first days of spring in Berlin, and Paulsen said they "clicked immediately." Mary Beth is a development helper who worked in Afghanistan. She also has breast cancer, and was intent on cutting off all her hair before she started losing it to chemo. However, rather than feeling sad at the impending loss, she said she looked at it as a sort of rite of passage into adulthood, which is perhaps one of the most moving responses to cancer-related hair loss I've ever heard.

More: Breast cancer buddies: Stars who supported each other

Needless to say, Paulsen was deeply inspired by Mary Beth and made it her mission to capture her essence in the piece. She treats the hair with great love and patience because, "a lot of love and patience went into growing this hair and a lot of identity is connected to it." Here's the beautiful end result.

Mary Beth hair

Mary Beth hair

Mary Beth was extremely moved by the finished product, and was surprised by how connected she could still feel to her hair now that it was off her head.

"The free flow design of the project meant that my hair had not been transformed simply into a piece of art that was separate from me, the flow of the necklace she created somehow seemed to still hold pieces of me within it. The waves of the hair ... still looked so alive and so full of life. ... Her work touched not only me, but also those close to me here in Berlin who have seen it or seen the pictures[...] I love the idea of helping create beauty out of what for many of us is a ugly process: chemotherapy."

That, in essence, is Paulsen's mission with these pieces — to show those touched by cancer that sickness does not (and should not) have to be seen as ugly. There is great beauty in all transformations; you just have to be open enough to find it.

Woman finds her twin stranger proving doppelgängers are so real

More: Scarlett Johansson & other celebs who are twins

Niamh, Harry and Terence decided to team up to find their true doppelgängers through a project they called "Twin Strangers." The idea behind the project was relatively simple — they heard that everyone has seven stranger twins in the world, and they decided to go on a global mission (using social media mainly) to find theirs. They gave themselves one month to do it, and they also made it interesting by making it a bit of a competition. Each friend documented their search online through video blogs, updating their followers on possible twin candidates, mismatches and non-responders.

After just two weeks, Niamh found a very promising candidate through social media named Karen Branigan, who strangely enough lived only an hour away in Ireland. The two decided to meet up to see just how similar they were to each other. Their resemblance is mind-boggling to say the least. Check out the video of their first encounter, and you'll see what I mean.

Niamh twin

Niamh twin

How crazy is that? Once they put on the same clothes and makeup, it looks like there's been a glitch in the matrix. YouTubers were obviously just as amazed as I was, because the video went viral, which in turn jumpstarted the three friends' project like nothing else could have. However, Niamh remains the only one to have found her true stranger twin. Sorry, boys — I suppose women are just better at this game.

More: The ex/doppelgänger effect

Niamh and Karen are 26 and 29 respectively, and say that they look more like each other than any of their own sisters. Niamh told the Daily Mail UK, "For the entire duration of our encounter I pretty much stared at her. I couldn't get over her face, and some of the expressions she would pull I would think to myself or say aloud, "Oh my God that’s my face." While I'm sure it would be cool, I have a feeling my initial reaction to my own doppelgänger would be more like this:

Image: Giphy

I'm not saying I'd be sure it was a pod person, but I'd definitely be wary of them. Niamh said Karen is definitely the shyer of the two of them, but that it's totally understandable since Niamh was the one who sought her out so publicly. "I knew what search I was embarking on. I’m the weirdo that contacted Karen out of the blue and asked her to meet me in person." Since the meeting, the girls have been chatting it up on Facebook. If nothing else, they've made good friends with someone who could help them play awesome pranks on their other friends.

More: Celebs who could totally have a secret sibling like Demi Lovato

So far, Niamh has come the closest to finding her stranger twin, but the contest isn't over until April 27, so the boys still have some time. They seem to think guys are a bit more hesitant to open up to a stranger in this way, but now that the contest is viral, perhaps they'll have more luck. They've also opened up their Facebook page to others around the world who wish to find their own doppelgänger. So if the idea of looking at yourself in another person doesn't freak you out too much, put your picture up there, and give your stranger twin luck a try.

Daphne Selfe models for Vans and & Other Stories at age 86

Alongside 22-year-old Flo Dron, Selfe shows off the collaboration between Vans and & Other Stories, wearing the revamped classic footwear with pieces from the online store's SS2015 collection.

If you don't already know Selfe's story she started modelling in 1949 but, after getting married and having three children, gave up work to focus on her family. When she tried to get back into the industry in the 1960s she found herself rejected by agencies because she didn't have the look of the time (think Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton). It wasn't until 1988, at the age of 70, that Selfe finally got her big break. Quirky fashion label Red or Dead was looking for older models for its London Fashion Week show and discovered Selfe through the agent she had stayed registered with since her early days in the business. This lead to a Vogue shoot for an issue celebrating age, where she met a scout for Models 1, and the start of a lucrative career.

Since then she's been featured on the fashion pages of The Guardian, in Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar and Dazed & Confused, appeared in Will Young's 2002 video for "Light My Fire," modelled for Nivea and TK Maxx and been photographed by Mario Testino, Rankin and Nick Knight. Last year she took part in the "Dare to Wear" campaign for Manchester's Trafford Centre.

There's no doubt that Selfe doesn't just look good for her age — she looks good, full stop. So what's her secret? It seems simple: embracing natural beauty.

"Age happens to us all, no one's immune, and I would never buy an expensive face cream, let alone consider surgery,” she has said. “I've always believed that my face tells the story of my life — why would I want to change it? I reached the same conclusion about my hair when I reached 60. So what if it was grey? It's nothing to be ashamed of. So I let the rinse fade and the silver shone through. It's the only thing I've ever done that's taken years off me."

5 Great reasons to exfoliate your face tonight

$
0
0

Turns out that exfoliating is actually a key piece of a good skin care routine and has all sorts of benefits you're probably not aware of. Here are five darn good reasons to exfoliate your face... tonight.

1. It makes your skin smoother

Exfoliating makes your face smooth and silky to the touch. It improves your skin's texture and makes it feel softer because it involves eliminating the old skin cells on top, says Dr. Elma Baron, a dermatologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. "It's smoother because you're removing the more dead layer on the surface and bringing out the new cells," she explains.

More: Skin boot camp: The 4-week solution

2. It helps counteract signs of aging

Exfoliating can help combat signs of aging and give you a more youthful look because the older skin cells you're getting rid of tend to exaggerate the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Though our skin naturally sheds those cells, its ability to do it slows down as we age. Exfoliating can help the process along and hide some of the evidence that we are getting older. Yay!

3. It can stop breakouts

Using a scrub to exfoliate your face cleans and unclogs your pores, which in turn can prevent you from getting pimples. That's because clogged pores trap oil under your skin's surface, which leads to acne breakouts. That said, exfoliating can have the reverse effect, according to Baron, so it's important to be careful. "On the flip side, the irritation and the subsequent inflammation that can come about through exfoliation can aggravate acne, so it may backfire," she warns. "I've seen it go bad."

More: What to do when your skin still thinks you're a teen

4. It's good for skin tone

Because exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells as well as extra dirt and makeup, it makes your skin tone brighter and evens it out. Your face will get a nice little glow. "The newer skin cells [that emerge when you exfoliate] are fresher looking," Baron says.

5. It helps your skin care products work better

Since exfoliating your face eliminates the dead skin on top, it lets your cleanser, moisturizer and other products penetrate more deeply and work better. If you always opt to skip out on exfoliating, they might not do the job as well because they can't get past that outer layer. "Your skin can receive moisture better when you remove dead skin cells, so it will look dewy," says beauty and style expert Elycia Rubin, who reviews beauty products on her blog What I'm Loving.

One caveat to all this, though: Don't overdo it.

"The only caution I would apply is in the frequency of exfoliation," says Baron. "We do not want people to over-exfoliate. I've seen patients do very well and I've also seen patients who have had damage from these exfoliating products."

More: The best exfoliator for your skin type

How often depends on your skin type. Those with oily skin can probably get away with exfoliating more, while those with dry or sensitive skin should do it more sparingly. Baron advises checking with a dermatologist to see what kind of regimen is best for you. Your face will thank you!

Kylie Jenner lip craze inspires dangerous beauty trend

By "this way" we of course mean the DIY method of placing a shot glass or bottle mouth around your lips, sucking the air out to create a vacuum and breaking the suction to reveal fat lips and a veiny, bruised pout:

kjc

kjc

The Kylie Jenner challenge, which has its own hashtag on Twitter and Instagram as well as an entire Twitter account dedicated to chronicling the results, has officially reached critical mass, with boys and girls across the country practically maiming their lips to achieve what could technically be described as "bee-stung" lips if one had a severe allergy to bees.

There are a number of reasons to not do this very stupid thing, all of which you probably don't need to be told, but let's go over them one by one anyway.

1. It hurts. A lot.

Kylie Jenner Challenge 1

Kylie Jenner Challenge 1

You're essentially creating a vacuum over the thinnest, most sensitive skin on your body, and that causes the blood vessels to burst. In no universe is this a good idea.

All you have to do is watch a video of any of the people doing this and gauge their immediate reaction to the feeling: pain, followed by the shock of what they've done to their poor lips. The pictures being spread around social media show bruised lips and skin, broken blood vessels and rings of red welts over an area you need to use daily. It isn't just the challenge portion that hurts; eating and speaking can be painful after you do this.

2. It has the potential to hurt a lot worse too.

Kylie Jenner Challenge 2

Kylie Jenner Challenge 2

A lot of people are using a shot glass to get the exaggerated results that we're seeing, and there's something important to remember about shot glasses: They're usually made of glass, and if they break, then enjoy your mouthful of glass, I guess. I'm betting you probably won't, though.

3. It looks really bad.

Kylie Jenner Challenge 3

Kylie Jenner Challenge 3

It's true that multiple products already exist on the market now to plump your lips with suction, and even those sometimes require concealer to cover up bruising. A shot glass, a Frappuccino bottle or a yogurt cup is not any of those products, and they don't plump your lips — they disfigure them. You're better off using a topical lip product that's much safer.

4. It looks bad for a lot longer than you'd think.

Kylie Jenner Challenge 4

Kylie Jenner Challenge 4

This little stunt might be good just for the laughs if it wasn't for the fact that it takes forever to start looking normal again. The person above still looked like she had been punched in the mouth a full week after she took part in the challenge.

5. The internet is forever.

Like most things, this is probably one of those passing fads that people are tempted to do because it's a quick way to be a part of something that's getting a lot of attention. Surely we don't live in a world where people actually think this is a legitimate beauty tip. But funny fads notwithstanding, people look really stupid doing this. And after they do this. Forever, because nothing dies on the internet.

So remember: Lip plumping optical illusions using lip liner is good. Punishing your face by maiming your lips with a shot glass is bad. It's as simple as that.

Andreja Pejic becomes first-ever trans model profiled in Vogue (PHOTO)

You see, fashion may be about what's hot this season, but it's also about representing people. People who buy the clothes and people who wear the clothes, and those people don't all fit into one skinny, white, born-a-certain-way category.

As fashion designer Lazaro Hernandez tells Vogue, "The distinction between man and woman is disappearing, aesthetically at least.... As a designer, you reflect the culture, and this is a big facet of our culture right now."

More: ModCloth's new model is making big headlines for being beautifully different

Whether it's something as basic as talking about menswear for women or a huge career milestone like Pejic's, it's clear that fashion does not have to have a gender. People have genders, and we dress to suit them, whether we are gay, straight, a cross-dresser, androgynous or transexual.

Andeja Pejic in Vogue

Image: VOGUE/Patrick Demarchelier

Perhaps the most important quote in the interview is when a NYC artist who is also transexual tells Vogue, "Transgender people don’t have role models within our families, so we look outward. Even if you see just the slightest hint of something that says you exist, you're real — well, it becomes disproportionately important."

More: Why you should share this Vogue photo shoot like wildfire

So, my friends, fashion is not just trends and seasons. It's personal, it's validating, it's a reflection of ourselves and our culture, which needs to continue evolving with us. And that responsibility is something many brands still need to learn to take more seriously.

A Starbucks Frappuccino-themed fashion show just happened in Japan

The event was called "The Starbucks Summer Party 2015" and consisted of a lot of fashionable people walking around drinking the new frapp while watching models parade around the stage dressed as ingredients in the drink. The ingredient-inspired outfits were designed by Taro Horiuchi, a Tokyo-based designer.

I remember doing a similar fashion show when I was in third grade dressed as an apple (it was a play about nutrition), but we didn't get any fun free drinks. The whole thing looks a little like a nightmare I once had about coffee; I was drinking a lot of frapps last summer and dreamt that I was at a school dance with a bunch of giant frapps who wouldn't talk to me.

More: Starbucks cold-brew coffee is going to blow your mind this spring

This party looks like a lot more fun and not nearly as scary, but it's still the most random thing you'll read today. While it's a bit weird, I do have to admit the music is catchy and even makes me feel light-hearted and in the mood for something sweet. Clever trick, Starbucks! I guess I underestimated you... slightly.

Frap fashion show

Frap fashion show

The drink itself sounds pretty tasty. It's yogurt blended with nuts and topped with jam and whipped cream. Sounds a bit more like a breakfast treat than a drink, but I for one enjoy having my breakfast in an easy-to-consume manner, so I would totally give this a try. However, I simply will never get on board with a model carrying an almond clutch with a tassel. It's too prosaic and takes me out of the fantasy.

More: Starbucks' new delivery service will make mornings so much easier

At the end of the day, this Frappuccino fashion show is a creative way to get the world to take notice of this fun new summer drink. But Starbucks, you could step up your fashion game next time, but I suppose that's why you sell coffee instead of chiffon?

5 Outfits that prove plus-size women can wear oversized trends

$

I've not only discovered new brands for you to try yourself, but also come up with some great ways to interpret this trend in a way that works for those of us with a little more "bass." For reference: I am 5'7" and generally wear an 18/20. Below you'll find me in the looks I experimented with, my tips and my thoughts on delving into the world of the unknown.

Look #1: Mimu Maxi Cascade Dress

Mimu Maxi Cascade Dress

Tip: Keep an open mind!

Mimu Maxi is a brand out of Brooklyn that caters to the more modest. It isn't a plus size brand so I was hesitant to check their site out, but their roomy garments offer a chic option if you're looking to be comfortable and look contemporary. Created by two sisters-in-law whose Instagram will make you envy their bond, Mimu Maxi is all about clothing for all. Whether you’re plus size, pregnant, average or in between, you must check them out. I could have gone down a size for sure. Love this look.

Look #2: Cozy Sweater from Ideel

 Cozy Sweater from Ideel

Tip: Get comfy on top (or bottom).

I love a great cozy sweater and this one from Ideel is everything. My tip here, when opting for an oversized look, is to go for a sleek and tight bottom. These leggings from Hold Your Haunches are exactly that. NASA-approved shapewear inside leggings that offers a supportive bottom perfect for accomplishing that loungey-chic look.

Shop Ideel's latest plus-size sales!

Look #3: Babooshka Boutique

Babooshka Boutique

Tip: Dare to drape!

I never need to wear another brand again. Babooshka knows how to envelope your curves in a way that is chic, comfortable and exactly right. Often plus-size women choose to drown themselves in fabric; this can result in looking like you are trying to hide what's underneath. This is the complete opposite. Babooshka's proportions are perfect and she knows where to drape and where to let you show some skin. Size note: I am wearing XXL but could have gone down a size. Bonus: Take 20 percent off all orders over $175 or more with the code SHEKNOWSBABS.

Look #4: Organza Tank by Liesl Binx

Organza Tank by Liesl Binx

Tip: Show some skin.

So, this tank wasn't exactly oversized on me... I ordered the 2X, so as you can see, to really get that boxy oversized look like the model you would need to size up drastically. However, this is well built and the organza is to die for. I do love the idea of wearing a tube underneath and letting a little skin peek through.

Look #5: Svoboda Popover V-neck Top

Svoboda Popover V-neck Top

Tip: Exaggerated cuts are your friend!

Conquering the chic simplicity of the oversized trend is all about realizing that you just have to find pieces that work. This top is sophisticated and chic and can be paired with lots of different bottoms. It is a simple silhouette with a little exaggeration. This brand knows how to cut for a woman's figure and makes clothes well. I would highly recommend them!

Feminists don bikinis to show Protein World they already have 'Beach Bodies'

$

Granted she's a beautiful woman in a bikini. But she's only one version of beauty and sadly it's the one that we see time and time again: in movies, on the pages of magazines and on enormous posters like this one plastered across the walls of our train stations, our bus shelters and our billboards. The one that doesn't represent the vast majority of women. You know: the women who don't have a tiny waist, a belly as flat as an ironing board and breasts that stay firm and pert in a bikini without any underwiring. You know: us.

It's great to see companies like Dove, ModCloth and Lane Byrant use real bodies in their campaigns — and by real I mean all types of bodies, including the Protein World bikini girl but also shorter, skinnier, curvier, larger women than her — but we need more of it. And the only way to get more of it is to make our voices heard, perhaps in a very public way. Which is exactly what two bloggers, Fiona Longmuir a.k.a. The Escapologist's Daughter and Tara of Zusterschap, did this week.

Tara tweeted a picture of herself showing exactly what she and her middle finger thought of the poster and this struck a chord with Fiona. The two began chatting, a plan was formed and 24 hours later they were both stripping to their bikinis in the middle of a crowded Charing Cross train station.

More: Men's perception of beauty isn't what you might think

"We agreed that we would pose in our bikinis next to the poster, just to let everyone know that we considered ourselves very much beach ready, and gorgeous to boot," said Fiona. "I've had a lot of people compliment me on my confidence since posting this photo on Twitter, but to be honest, in those few seconds before I took off my dress, I felt like bursting into tears and having a heart attack simultaneously."

Both women agreed that it helped to have someone else there for support (despite having only met each other the day before). "It was a very liberating experience for me as I'm not usually that comfortable on beaches in a bikini, let alone somewhere out of the ordinary in one," said Tara.

"I don't look like that model when I'm dolled up to the nines, never mind when I'm on the beach," said Fiona. "But right there, in that moment, I felt sexy as hell."

Tara agreed that it was "definitely a successful experience" saying, "I was really worried we would attract abuse or men making us feel uncomfortable but we didn't. My faith in humanity has been restored a little."

"The best part about all this is the fact that Protein World completely misunderstood, retweeted the photo and sent me a winky face emoji," she added.

This particular campaign has annoyed a lot of people, prompting the #eachbodysready social media campaign and widespread vandalism of the posters around London Underground. A protest was held last weekend, a change.org petition calling for the removal of the ad has received 25,861 signatures to date and the advert is currently under Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) investigation due to the number of complaints received about it.

#everybodysready

#everybodysready

"Seeing images of the same (often unattainable) body type touted as the ideal all the time has an affect, whether we like it or not," Fiona told SheKnows. "This idea that women need to meet a minimum standard to be acceptable for public misses the point that women aren't supposed to be for public display. I think that's what riled me so much about the Protein World ad. The model wasn't presented as an unattainable goal, or an amazing achievement, she was presented as 'ready.' As the bare minimum that a woman should be."

"Am I beach body ready? You can bet your ass I am," she said. "And I don't need meal replacements to get there. And neither do you. We're already perfect."

13 Things I learned from getting my first tattoo

$
0
0

1. Instagram is a great place to find an artist

You can check out their work in advance and see if their style is similar to what you want. I found mine by searching #aztattooers, and then was able to check out the shop to read reviews and look into their cleanliness standards (important).

2. It hurts

Tattoo bleeding

Image: Colleen Stinchcombe -- Bleeding during a break

This seems dumb, but even though I knew it hurt, I also knew a bunch of people who had gotten tattoos, so why not me? I tolerated the pain pretty well for the first hour or two, but by hour three I was having to pull out all of my coping techniques — focusing on breathing, music, podcast, silence, texting friends curse words — to get through it. Yeah, this sucker took four to five hours.

3. It's exhausting

Eat a big meal beforehand and bring water, snacks and juice boxes. If you're in the chair for more than 30 minutes, you'll want them. Your body is using a lot of energy to pump you up with adrenaline and endorphins and skin-healing magic. Give it the fuel to do so.

4. It's expensive

Some tattoos are arguably cheap. If you're getting something small off the wall, you might get something for $60 or under. A lot of people would argue you get what you pay for. I'm not here to judge. I am here to say: I really like my tattoo, but it also cost me a lot of money — like, cross-country plane ticket money. But if there's something I think is worth spending money on, it's art that's going to be on my body forever.

More: 15 Emotional stages of getting a tattoo

5. Healing is tedious

The pain dulls fast once a tattoo needle is no longer actively going into your skin. That's the good news. The bad news is, depending on where you got your tattoo, you're going to have to do some finagling to protect your tattoo for the next one to three weeks. It's good to have a buddy around to help you wrap your tattoo for the first few days after your session, and Google some tricks about how to shower without getting your new art wet. I showered with a towel over my arm for two weeks.

6. Your skin will peel

Peeling skin

Image: Colleen Stinchcombe -- This was only the beginning of the peeling

Everyone will want to know if the flakes are colored. They are. Don't pick them.

7. You might go through a period of mourning

I haven't experienced this (fingers crossed), but in my obsessive internet searching, I found out it's not rare at all for people who get tattoos to feel an almost instant kind of regret, especially when it's a large or very visible tattoo. It makes sense. You've spent the last 18 (at least) years of your life looking a certain way and now it's changed, and people might even react to you differently as a person. Many early tattoo regretters end up finding peace and learning to love their new ink.

8. People really like tattoos

It's only been a month since I got my tattoo, but I've yet to hear a negative comment — most people want to tell you how awesome your tattoo is and about their own tattoos or tattoo dreams.

9. A surprising number of people have them

Coworkers you had no idea had ink will suddenly be telling you about their 15 different pieces, and you'll also start noticing tattoos on people everywhere you go.

10. Your selfies get a million times cuter

Tattoo selfie

Image: Colleen Stinchcombe — I understand you have nothing to compare this to, but I am telling you right now this is exactly one million times cuter than normal.

Tattoos are basically like having permanently perfect eyeliner or the cutest accessory ever in your photos all the time.

11. You'll have a whole new appreciation for sunscreen

The sun is now the enemy of your art and you will do everything you can to protect it. And since you're already putting it on one area of your body… your skin will thank you.

12. You will start to tailor your fashion around your tattoos

I've taken notice of the "type" of person I look like in different clothes with my tattoos — with a sleeve, my tattoo disappears; in dark colors, I look a little “tough;” in light colors, I look more like a hippie, and in dresses, it seems like I'm going after a pin-up look. I never had a particularly strong "style," but if you do, you might want to consider color, placement and size of your tattoo or you might find yourself wanting a whole new wardrobe, too.

13. You'll want more

I'm already making a five-year tattoo plan.

It's Fashion Revolution Day: Here's how you can make a difference

$
0
0

Fashion Revolution is an international movement, with support from people in 71 countries and a ton of celebrity participants, including chef Melissa Hemsley, Eco-Age founder Livia Firth and model Lily Cole.

The campaign is fighting for greater transparency in the fashion supply chain, hoping to make shoppers think more carefully about where their clothes have come from. Do you know who made the sweater you're wearing right now? Or the jeans in your favourite online store? Most of us don't, and it's a question we should be asking.

Because the alternative is that the garments we buy, wear and love — often until something else catches our eye, and then much of our purchases end up in the charity shop bin without further thought — do not follow an ethical, sustainable path to our wardrobes. If we don't know how, where and by whom something was made, we can't decide whether we want to contribute to the process.

By asking questions of our retailers and designers, we take responsibility, create a conversation and can demand change.

Help raise awareness by taking a photo of yourself wearing an item of clothing inside out (showing the label), sharing it on your social channels, tagging the brand and asking them the important question #whomademyclothes?

So the next time you're having a clothing crisis, look to these lessons from the icons of the silver screen.

1. Never underestimate the power of simplicity

Image: Darlene Hammond/Getty Images

Less is more. Audrey Hepburn turned that statement into an unforgettable image that will be eternally stylish. A little black dress, a crisp-collared shirt and a pair of black ankle pants are all you need to conquer the world with confidence.

2. Embrace your curves

Sohpia Loren

Image: Hulton Archive/Getty Images

Dressing for your body type is crucial to pulling off any look with effortless ease. Sophia Loren was one woman who knew how to accentuate her best assets. If you stick with what works for your figure, you'll always look great. And when you look great, you feel great.

3. Style starts with sophistication

Grace Kelly

Image: Supplied by WENN.com

The key to great style is impeccable taste; you can't have a fabulous wardrobe without it. Grace Kelly was the epitome of elegance, favoring a feminine flair, all about the details. Look poised to perfection by slipping into some lace and a flowing circle skirt with a cinched waist.

4. Ensembles are essential

Doris Day

Image: Universal Studios

To be perfectly pulled together, you need to have a completed look. Doris Day donned matching hats, gloves and coats making her outfits masterpieces of style. Shop for some versatile complementary garments that will take any look to the next level.

5. Sometimes you need a little sparklee

Elizabeth Taylor

Image: Supplied by WENN.com

The right jewelry can make all the difference. After all, Elizabeth Taylor's most memorable love affair was with her diamonds. Sparkle from the outside in with a statement earring or necklace that will give you perfect amount of glitz to dazzle everyone.

6. Sexy doesn't depend on skin

Lauren Bacall

Image: Supplied by WENN.com

A little skin goes a long way. Look at Lauren Bacall, the queen of seductive sophistication. She oozed sex appeal when she was covered up, rocking structured suits and slacks. Skip the skimpy and go for a tailored look that leaves more to the imagination than the eye.

7. It's all about the eyes

Natalie Wood

Image: Supplied by WENN.com

They say the eyes are the windows of the soul. Through the ever-changing Hollywood trends, Natalie Wood's eye makeup always made a consistent smoldering statement. Captivate the crowds with a feathered lash look highlighted by a precise liquid line and bold brows.

8. Casual can always be fashionable

Marilyn Monroe

Image: mptvimages.com/IMDb

An understated look can be just as sexy as a dress. Although she immortalized the skin-bearing silhouette, Marilyn Monroe opted for a more casual look off set. Pair some high-waist capris with a tight knit or loose button-down for a simple but memorable look.

There are countless fashion tips we can take away from the A-list lovelies of golden cinema, but they all have one thing in common: Classic will always be contemporary. Because some things never go out of style.
