Pamella Roland's spring collection is inspired by Japanese gardens

$

When planning her spring 2015 collection, the acclaimed designer drew on a time she spent living outside the United States: "The inspiration for each collection is always very personal and spring 2015 was inspired by a time when I lived in Japan and visited the beautiful gardens of Kyoto. It was an amazing experience that had a strong influence on my appreciation for art and design."

The natural beauty Roland drew inspiration from definitely translates into the sheer fabrics and soft, feminine colors that dominate the much-anticipated collection. You could say she's keeping things simple and chic, just the way she likes it: "The best [fashion] advice I’ve ever received is to keep it simple… Less is more."

Except when it comes to her approach to fall fashion, of course. "For fall I always recommend dressing in layers and making sure that each layer is part of the total look," she says. Slightly oversized statement coats also rank at the top of Roland's must-have list for the cooler months.

The trend is definitely one that works for a huge range of body types, something that's important to Roland as a designer. "As a mother with two daughters I think it’s very important to promote a healthy and positive body image. I believe designing for a wide range of sizes and ages is what has helped grow our business both here in the U.S. and internationally as well," she says.

"Fit is something that is very important to me and we always make sure to design styles that fit a range of body types," she continues. "We are frequently asked for a dress or gown with a sleeve and it’s something we include in each collection."

Fashion that fits well and looks great on a range of beautiful body types? We can get behind that idea.

Female veterans walk the runway for a moving Fashion Week show

At the Salute The Runway fashion show this week, 14 beautiful veterans from all branches of the armed services walked the runway in serious style. The event was sponsored by Little Black Dress Wines and Fatigues to Fabulous (F2F), a campaign that emotionally and financially assists America's military women.

In a week that's filled with consumerism and larger-than-life beauty and fashion looks, it's certainly refreshing to see some everyday heroes getting a glamorous moment in the spotlight. From current to former armed services members, these ladies showed the audience what real beauty is all about in their array of ensembles.

There were elegant LBD moments.

Modcloth wants their models to look like real women

$
0
0

The news comes on the heels of a very open letter the brand's co-founder Susan Gregg Koger wrote to the fashion industry, urging them to reevaluate the way they portray women.

A lack of diversity, unhealthy representations of the female shape and excessive retouching were just three critiques Koger had for her industry. But you know what they say, "talk is cheap," so Koger took things one step further and announced the open casting call after she released the letter.

So far, over 2,000 women have posted their #fashiontruth, and the number is growing by the day. In an age where many retailers just seem totally out of touch with the greater society's version of the truth, Modcloth's efforts to make all women feel beautiful are inspiring. And the brand is definitely no stranger to such initiatives, either. Modcloth recently announced its pledge to be 100 percent honest about their photoshopping practices and also released its findings in the "Truth in Fashion" report.

The report revealed that a mere 13 percent of women believe that real women are accurately portrayed in the fashion industry. And 68 percent of us are more likely to buy from a company that uses models of different sizes. Enlightening, right?

As a beauty and fashion editor and writer, I'm always looking for ways to present seasonal trends and collections in a way that invites women of all colors, shapes and styles in, but sadly the fashion industry at large often falls short in its portrayal of "real women."

Real women have curves, real women have flaws and maybe a bit of cellulite. Real women come in all colors and sizes. And they certainly don't want to feel isolated when they read a magazine or see an ad campaign with a one-size-or-color-fits-all kind of attitude.

So yeah, I'm absolutely thrilled to see how much Modcloth cares about the way women feel about themselves. If we had more brands like this step out and exhibit the type of bravery Koger and her team do, we just might be able to take this positive body image movement a bit further.

Kendall Jenner's newest ambition

Kendall Jenner's newest ambition

Kendall Jenner has definitely made a name for herself as something other than just another member of the Kardashian clan. The gorgeous 18-year-old has begun to form a really impressive modeling portfolio. In her early days (hilarious, I am talking about a literal teenager and using the phrase "early days" in a sincere way) Kendall made more headway doing gigs that skewed commercial in nature. But all that changed at fashion week in New York this week when Kendall strutted her stuff for Diane Von Furstenberg opposite famous veterans like Naomi Campbell.

Kendall told an E! news reporter than transitioning from commercial work to jobs that are more high-fashion in nature isn't always easy. While it's good to see that she's being realistic and keeping both feet on the ground, I have no doubt that before long Kendall will be dominating the upper echelons of the fashion world. I mean, she doesn't exactly come from a family of low achievers.

How to debunk your garment tag

$
0
0

There's actually an art to finding the perfect piece and we sought out Sara Kozlowski, Assistant Professor of Fashion Design at Parsons The New School for Design, to find out how to decipher a garment tag, what fabrics to look for and what to spend our money on this fall. She's partnering with Marshalls and T.J. Maxx to help shoppers debunk their garment tags.

The ever-important garment tag

"There are certain cues to always look for when shopping, so it's important for everyone to be their own personal quality detective and closely examine each item," Kozlowski says. "When it comes to garment tags, my general rule of thumb is if it says 'Made in Italy,' then buy it! European designers have a long legacy of excellent craftsmanship, so just because you don't recognize a brand name doesn't mean it's not high quality, and vice versa."

That being said, quality fabrics can also dictate the price tag of any garment, so it's important to pay attention to those tags and make sure you're selecting the best fabrics. Kozlowski cites wool, leather and cashmere as three fabrics worth shelling out a bit more cash on.

Of course, there are sometimes faux fabrics lurking out there, so it's important to monitor those garment tags closely, she says: "My advice is to stick with genuine leather — it's often proudly labeled as such so be sure to check the hangtags, interiors and bottom of shoes for this stamp of quality approval." When shopping for wool, seek out at least 50 percent wool blend and beware of imposters like acrylic. Aim for at least a "60 percent ratio of cotton to synthetics" with cotton pieces if you can't get 100 percent.

The same goes for leather and cashmere, folks. Make sure your leather feels "supple and buttery versus stiff," features a rich, masculine smell, and feels warm. Kozlowski added, "True cashmere, which will feel soft, breathable and fluffy, should also feel electric — if you rub your hand or a plastic item across the surface, its fibers will charge and may even create static."

The devil is in the details

When you're out in the trenches (aka the mall), there are other aspects of a garment you can examine to make sure you're getting quality fashion. "I always look for well-crafted functional signature details, including generously cut pockets or extra buttons and yarn sewn into the inside of the garment, because these extra materials are for wear and repair in order to extend the life of the garment," Kozlowski says.

Finding pieces that fit well and following the care instructions (i.e., always dry cleaning an item if it says "Dry clean only") can also help you make sure you're scoring great finds (and making them last long so your purchase is worth it).

The bottom line? Quality matters, and a close eye is a shopper's best friend in the fashion hunt.

Of course, these aren't the only products in the line, just our favorites. The full line includes glitter (because why not?), grease paint and much, much more. All of it is in the line and just begs for a night out with your friends, doing the Time Warp all over town.

These awesome colors won't transport you back to Transsexual Transylvania. You may, however, find yourself in the arms of Brad Major or perhaps Frank. Just grease yourself up and have fun with the creature of the night.

But why lingerie, specifically? It's something she's been envisioning for quite some time, it turns out. She told Glamour"I went to Europe [10 years ago] and I went to a store and it was really, really cool. It was a vintage lingerie sleepwear store. Everything in there was very different and very electric and beautiful. Ever since then, it was like 'I want to do that. I want a lingerie line.' It’s something that’s been on my mind for a really long time now, so to be able to put it together and have my dream come true is really amazing."

Now the question remains: Will you check it out?

Betsey Johnson tackles gay marriage in her Fashion Week show

The runway models weren't your typical high fashion models, either. A transgender bride, drag queens, same-sex couples and a few Real Housewives stars strutted their stuff in Betsey's colorful and revealing designs.

Johnson told ABC News the show was an ode to marriage freedom, calling it "trendy and transgendy." "Pre nup is a part of the whole world of straight brides, gay brides, transgender marriages, everybody getting married. Finally, freedom," she continued.

As for the clothes themselves? "The clothes are my first shot at all kinds of brides... It's been the most fun to work on this show. A lot of kind of new, more abstract ideas: see-through plastic dresses and dresses made out of scuba fabric and horse hair."

Fun is definitely one word to describe these creative designs. Check them out for yourself!

1. There was this elaborate silver gown.

2. And we were quite intrigued by the "prenup" necklace she sent out with this look.

3. This wedding dress featured a sweetheart neckline and an even sweeter skirt.

4. This was quite the take on "something blue."

5. The show was definitely a celebration of love and marriage equality for everyone.

6. Betsey also proved she can design stunning styles for all genders and sexual orientations.

7. That's one sexy flower girl. Love the violet color here. The totally sheer material? It may be more appropriate for the honeymoon!

8. Over-the-top nods to past decades also filled the show.

9. Was Betsey inspired by Beyoncé? We can totally see her wearing this sheer dress.

2. Glam from head to toe! The tough bag and casual belt really helped tone down this bedazzled look.

3. Casual meets totally not casual. We love the fashion juxtaposition going on in this look.

4. Of course, tans, khakis and other neutral hues didn't totally reign the runway. We promptly added these hot-pink pants to our shopping list after seeing this look.

5. Cargo pants got all dressed up thanks to a stunning purple top and brown strappy sandals.

6. Black ensembles also had a moment on Ralph's runway. And thank God they did, because this look (aside from the coat, maybe) is so wearable.

8 Fashion Week hair and makeup ideas that are actually doable

1. Natural makeup

1. Natural makeup

Some of the most gorgeous makeup looks are the most simple. Michael Kors sent his models down the runway with matte skin, minimal eye makeup and neutral lips. The result? Stunning.

2. Colored extensions

Colored extensions

Photo credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty image

Dip your toe into the rainbow-colored hair trend with some colorful extensions. Peter Gray, stylist for Moroccanoil, told us his inspiration for the look was the next generation of Park Avenue — sexy, tough hair with a "dirty" texture and loose waves.

3. Wet hair

Wet hair

Photo credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty image

Ever wish you could just run out the door with wet hair? Well, you can. Just slick it back strategically and you'll look stylish, not sloppy.

4. Loose waves

 Loose waves

Photo credit: Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty image

The brains at Tresemme created these no-fuss loose waves for Narciso Rodriguez and we're digging them for the simplicity. Just scrunch wet locks with a salt spray, let dry and you'll be good to go.

5. Colored French manicure

Sick of the classic mani? Switch things up a bit with a cute colored tip instead.

6. Headscarves

Esther Langham for Beauty.com relied on PHYTO & T3 Tools to create this summer-ready sleek style. We love the headscarves, don't you? Great for covering up difficult hair days.

7. Dewy skin

Dewy, glowing skin is on trend all year-round if you ask us. The key? Lots of hydration and a really great highlighter.

8. Curly ponytails

Aveda guest artist Jon Reyman created this approachable wavy ponytail, and we can definitely see ourselves whipping our unruly locks into the style on a windy day.
