8 Times Gaga stunned fans by dressing basic

$

After all, part of the reason we love Mother Monster so much is her killer sense of style and her fearless approach toward all things fashion. But every now and then, Gaga takes a break from the 10-inch stilettos and haute couture costumes and gets real.

1.

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga are releasing an album. Yep, you read that right folks. The fast friends recently announced their collaboration and at a promo event for the release, Gaga took our breath away with her toned down fashion choice. She looked brilliant in a billowy black dress featuring a plunging neckline and gray embellishment.

2.

Gaga looking more fresh faced

Have you ever seen Gaga look more fresh faced? We certainly haven't. The singer looked gorgeous with long lashes, clean skin and a pulled back 'do at an album release party for her most recent hit Artpop.

3.

Lady Gaga on horseback

So maybe you can't really call arriving on horseback "dressing down" entirely, but Gaga's one-of-a-kind American Music Awards entrance definitely didn't detract from her toned down look. The stunning purple hue complemented the singer's hair color and complexion beautifully.

4.

Gaga in a gorgeous metallic gown

Photo credit: Joshua Blanchard /Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Simply stunning, right? For a recent event, Gaga went the subtly flashy route in a gorgeous metallic gown. The classic sweetheart neckline and pretty one-shoulder detail drew attention up to Gaga's lovely, voluminous half updo and simplified makeup.

5.

Gagas sexy post-Oscars look

All eyes were on Gaga's sexy post-Oscars look this year, including ours. The singer turned heads in a curve-hugging bedazzled white strapless gown featuring an incredibly edgy midsection that showed off her beautiful shape. Retro waves and sparkly makeup solidified our love for this look.

6.

Gagas Oscars red carpet look

Before she hit the after parties, Gaga made quite the impression on the Oscars red carpet in a slinky purple and silver strapless gown. The scarf-cape combo paired with an unfussy updo made Gaga look simply regal.

7.

Gaga in a gauzy trench-inspired blush dress

Photo credit: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Gaga is a gal who knows how to work a camera line, and we love how she's equally as comfortable posing in a toned down number as an over-the-top ensemble. Case in point: Gaga shows off her confidence in a gauzy trench-inspired blush dress paired with fishnet stockings and nude pumps.

8.

Gaga in a gold one sleeve metallic gown

Photo credit: Mike Windle/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Just because Gaga's outfit is toned down doesn't mean it lacks a touch of sass. At the 2014 Golden Globes after party, the 28-year-old looked positively glowing in a gold one-sleeve metallic gown. Gaga's bejeweled neckline, the unique silhouette and classy waves certainly made her stand out from the crowd in a good way.

Barbie launches new fashion line... for adult women

$

0

Starting in September, Lord & Taylor will carry Barbie's best fashions from the '50s and '60s. The pink paisley mini dress? Be still my heart. Wildfox will offer '80s Barbie gear like her sassy off-the-shoulder cropped sweatshirt. And for the price of one doll, Forever 21 will sell you a '90s-era tank top emblazoned with Barbie's iconic logo or "I (heart) Ken." The line even includes some sleepwear and accessories because it wouldn't be Barbie without options, right?

I just have one question: Why has no one thought of this sooner? As a girl who was obsessed with Barbies from about 3 years old up to way too old to be socially appropriate, I think this is a fantastic idea. Her magnificent wardrobe was half the fun of playing with Barbie. (Although I'll admit that my Barbies spent way more time stark naked sprawled indecently around my bedroom or lounging in the hot tub (aka my parents' big bathtub). It's hard for little fingers to wrestle those plastic feet into hot pants. Even as a tot, I wished some of Barbie's clothing came in my size.

I mean what's not to love about high-heeled shoes, pink blazers, go-go boots, thick knit sweaters, floofy skirts and sparkly blouses? Bonus, they were all adjustable with velcro! But of course dresses were where Barbie has always reigned supreme. I'd love to see one of her "limited edition" holiday ballgowns recreated or her '50s house dress with the full skirt or one of her playful '60s mod styles.

Still, there was one dress that was The Ultimate for me. Peaches and Cream Barbie was a gorgeous confection made up of a huge pink, poofy skirt topped by a sparkly bodice with a sweetheart neckline. She was perfectly accessorized with a ruffled matching shawl you could wrap six different ways and a pink sash with a giant flower. She probably had some cute shoes too although I'm guessing I chewed them up into little chunks of colored plastic. (Please tell me I wasn't the only weirdo who did that.)

So I say if we're going to do Barbie, let's go all in! I would wear the heck out of all of those clothes, peach ballgown included. (Although maybe tailored to real human being proportions. Her bust-hip-waist ratio is still insane. Sorry, Barbie.) Who cares if I'm too old for a prom? I clearly haven't outgrown my inner Barbie!

How to tie a headscarf for summer

Supplies:

  • A scarf made of lightweight material. Both square and rectangular scarves will work.

Time needed: 5 minutes or less

Instructions:

Step 1: Fold

How to turn a scarf into a headband

Fold your square scarf diagonally to make a triangle. Then continue folding the scarf over until you've created a long, thin band. If you're using a rectangular scarf, you'll also want to make a thin band, but by folding the scarf lengthwise until you have a long strip.

Step 2: Wrap

How to turn a scarf into a headband

Wrap the folded scarf around the back of your head, holding the ends out in front. Make sure you have it centered by checking that the ends come out to be the same length.

Step 3: Twist

How to turn a scarf into a headband

Bring the ends together so they cross at the top of your head. Give it a twist so the 2 ends latch together and then wrap around toward the back of your head.

Step 4: Tie and tuck

How to turn a scarf into a headband

Tie a single knot to secure and tuck the ends in. Voila! A perfectly tied headscarf and a fun, stylish look you can wear all summer long.

Bloggers boycott over Target's latest plus-size slight

$

Chastity Garner, a prominent fashion blogger, penned a lengthy post excoriating Target for once again leaving plus sizes out of the mix.

"Year after year, season after season, you put out these gorgeous designer collections and you almost never include a plus range," she wrote. Garner vowed to end her "abusive relationship" with the irresistible retailer, and pretty soon her words, and those of other slighted plus-sized fashionistas, paved the way for a #BoycottTarget/#BoycottingTarget movement on Twitter.

You see, Target doesn't have a great track record with its plus-sized consumers. There was the time they labelled a plus-size version of a dress "manatee grey" instead of "heather grey," and more recently, plus-size consumers have seen their in-store options dwindle. Target has stated the cutback was to make room for improved plus-size offerings, but walk into any Target store and you won't see much of that happening yet.

A rep for Target responded to the latest Altuzarra brouhaha, telling Refinery29 the company will "take this feedback into consideration as we move forward." The rep also said consumers can look forward to a new plus-size line in the near future.

Not in the mode to #BoycottTarget? Take a peek at some of the Altuzarra collection's best offerings.

1. "Oh my god, I forgot to shave my legs."

Rihanna GIF

Original source

It's only upon sitting down that I realize it's been exactly 4.5 weeks since I last picked up a razor. Also: toe hair. We're off to a relaxing start.

2. "I'm sure you're lovely, but please don't talk to me."

GIF from The office

Original source

As much as I enjoy small talk, I'd really like to be left alone to read my People magazine, circa 2007. Britney Spears is really having a hard time these days, eh?

3. "I couldn't touch feet all day like her, I just couldn't."

Jimmy Fallon GIF

Original source

It's a noble profession, really it is — making women feel beautiful. It's also disgusting. Feet all day, yuck. I wonder if she has a power ranking of the nastiest feet she has ever touched. I wonder where I am on that list.

4. "Skip the tickle spot. Skip the tickle spot."

GIF from The Voice

Original source

If she touches the middle of my foot one more time, I cannot be held responsible if I involuntarily kick her in the face. No offense.

5. "They're talking about me. I know they are."

The Office GIF

Original source

My foot looks like a boat in her tiny and delicate little hands. Perfect hands, really. And now her perfect little hands are touching the corn on my big toe. What is she saying? Is it about my corn?

6. "Are they talking about my weird toes??"

Weird toes GIF

Original source

Ugh, I know that she is talking about my corn and my bunion and my weird little toe that doesn't grow a toenail. This is mortifying. I'm never doing this again. You've betrayed me again, weird toes.

7. "She's done with the massage? Dang, that was too short."

Lauren Conrad GIF

Original source

Rip-off.

8. "It's burning. It's burning! OK, whew, it's cooling down."

Anchorman GIF

Original source

The massage was way too short, but good thing we're moving on to the paraffin wax dip. This should feel nice. Holy balls, this paraffin wax is molten hot lava! Breathe through it, breathe through it. Don't scream in pain, it's unbecoming. OK, it's cooling off. I might have a blister but it's cooling off.

9. "I love pedicures."

You know, it was touch and go there for a minute. But just look at my toenails! Better set my next appointment.

Kelly Osbourne wants you to fit in her new clothing line

Kelly, a host on E!'s Fashion Police, is known her for sassy attitude and daring fashion sense, so it was really just a matter of time before she put her name on her very own clothing collection. Stories…By Kelly Osbourne, which ranges in price from $55-170, will debut 13 looks on HSN Sept. 25, according to WWD.

Kelly Osbourne | Sheknows.com

Photo credit: Brian Ach/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

A longtime champion of positive body image, Kelly's experience with natural weight fluctuations and her industry styling expertise will translate into the inclusive and flattering collection. She told WWD: "Because I have been everything from a size 0 to pretty much almost a 16, depending on the brand, it made me realize all the tricks I had learned to cover up certain areas or to detract from certain areas, and what I like in clothing."

And she knows that one size doesn't fit all, so Kelly's collection will range in size from 0 to 24. She even posted some design sketches on her Instagram this week, teasing the all-inclusive collection. Her caption? "I believe fashion should be fair, so @storiesbyko will be in all sizes from 0-24! #storiesbyKO"

Design sketches

Design sketches

Can we get an amen to that, ladies? We're kind of over celebrity and designer clothing lines that are based off sample size models and don't fit our beautiful curves, so we couldn't be more excited to check out Kelly's diverse collection. As a petite, curvy gal herself, we're pretty sure Kelly will have our back and show us some designs that flatter our fabulous figures.

This is Kelly's first collection for HSN, but it's definitely not her first foray into the fashion and beauty realm. The fashionista was previously a spokesmodel for Madonna's Material Girl collection and has her own MAC makeup line as well. And she's joining good company, partnering up with HSN; Kelly's fellow Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic has also designed for the site.

Meet The Newest Human-Barbie

Mamma mia! Lolita Richi's mom is one laid-back cookie. This teenager, who spends a ridiculous amount of time, effort, energy and, no doubt, dollars in her quest to look like the best version of a human Barbie doll, is getting loads of support from the place you'd least expect: her mother. Richi's own "Mommy Dearest" says she's proud of her daughter's mission, and she herself is actually really involved in it, taking all the photos that have made Richi something of an internet phenomenon.

16-year-old human Barbie Lolita Richi

Richi claims she has had no plastic surgery. That could be true, but I find it highly suspect. If she hasn't had some sort of cosmetic work done, then I'd like to find out where she buys her bras and corsets she uses to make her waist so teeny-tiny. She does admit that she's had a little help from wigs and contacts, but that's it. Whatever she's doing, it's working — it's also deeply strange.

Rihanna reaches new heights with a super high ponytail

RiRi recently turned heads in an incredibly perky ponytail that we've been dying to recreate ever since, so we turned to Aussie celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa for the step-by-step tips for transforming our locks into this trendy look.

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Rihanna

Photo credit: JP Yim/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Get the look

  1. To get this ultra-shiny finish on your hair, deep condition hair with Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Shine. This will help to add a reflective surface to the cuticle to keep it looking shiny all day.
  2. If you have naturally textured hair or curls, smooth out any knots and touch up hair with the SARAHPOTEMPA Mini Touch Up Iron.
  3. Apply a workable hairspray like Aussie SPRUNCH directly onto your hair brush before each stroke as you brush the hair into a high ponytail. This will evenly distribute the hairspray while getting rid of frizz and flyaways. Secure the hair in a high ponytail with a strong elastic. TIP: To get the area underneath the ponytail smooth, tilt your head back and look up at the ceiling while brushing hair into a ponytail.
  4. Next, take a small section of hair, wrap it around the ponytail holder and secure with a hair pin to hide the ponytail holder.
  5. Then curl the hair in small sections with The Beachwaver by SARAHPOTEMPA for loose waves.
  6. The final step is to a take pea-size amount of Aussie Instant Freeze Gel and apply to the hair line. TIP: If you have pesky flyaways, apply the gel directly to a toothbrush to lay them flat.

Taylor Schilling and Alexa Chung in hip boy-meets-girl menswear

Taylor Schilling

Taylor Schilling

On the West Coast, Taylor Schilling traveled in style, arriving in Los Angeles in a super trendy menswear-inspired ensemble we can't wait to recreate this fall.

The Orange is the New Black star basically created a perfect menswear outfit , and we don't say that lightly. In loose-fitting slacks, a dark floral print pullover sweater (worn over a pale blue button-up blouse) and black oxfords, Taylor embodied the cool girl way to rock the borrowed-from-the-boys style. Taylor kept things from getting too masculine by reaching for a feminine print and only slightly baggy pants.

The final verdict? As if her outfit needed any more coolness, Taylor's laid-back chignon, sassy sunnies and low-key makeup look solidified her outfit's place on our best dressed list.

Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung

Out in London, Alexa Chung celebrated her collaboration with Nails Inc. in the most stylish way possible. The style star turned heads in a pale pink ladylike short-sleeve midi dress and we're definitely envying her look.

Pale pink's a difficult color to pull off. You don't want to look too prim and proper and girly. But Alexa made her A-line jacquard version work for her by accessorizing strategically. The high neckline and covered up silhouette call for a cool accessory juxtaposition, and Alexa achieved that by pairing her dress with sexy strappy black heels, a few rings and sultry beach waves.

The final verdict? The ladylike trend will continue to be a big trend through fall (yay!) and Alexa is getting us seriously thinking about how to transition the big summer look into the cooler months. We can totally see this look paired with a cool biker jacket, can't you?

Watch this amazing makeup artist transform herself into male celebrities

Sometimes, though, on my bad days, it can still feel like I have no clue what I'm doing with all the brushes, liquids and powders. That's why I applaud people who can contour. And I am totally, completely, 100-percent stunned by this French makeup artist who turns herself into celebrities using just cosmetics. Oh, and not just any celebrities... but male celebrities. It's kind of like art, right? Pretty cool.

The makeup artist's name is Magali Beauvue. She's based in Paris, and has developed somewhat of a mini-following online with her Facebook fan page. Her work is so good, even Chris Brown discovered her look (based off a photo of him) and posted it to his Instagram. When you're good, word gets around!

She's also a wizard when it comes to turning herself into female stars like Beyoncé. You can check out all of her looks via her Facebook page, including some regular makeup work that would be great for a night out and appears much more "everygirl." (I mean, her work still puts what you and I do every morning in the bathroom mirror to shame, but you know what I mean.)

Acid attack victims show off their true beauty in gorgeous new photo shoot (VIDEO)

Gorgeous new photo shoot uses acid attack Rupa

"I could not see anything. I could not open my eyes, I was screaming," she said to CNN. "But no one came to help me. My stepmother watched me suffering."

Unfortunately Rupa's experience is not uncommon, especially in her native India where there have been over 200 reported assaults this year already. Worldwide, there are about 2,500 reported cases each year but experts say acid attacks are vastly under-reported thanks to the shame and social stigma of being a victim.

Acid attack victim Rupa from Stop Acid Attacks

Acid attack victim Rupa from Stop Acid Attacks

It took Rupa three years before she could bring herself to look in the mirror again and several more years to feel comfortable going out in public. But now the vivacious 22-year-old has done one better: She's started her own clothing line and has used herself and other victims of acid attacks to model them. Since she was a child she'd dreamed of working in fashion and she was determined that nothing would hold her back.

She currently lives in Chhanv, a home and rehab center for victims of acid attacks which is funded by the group Stop Acid Attacks. The founder of the charity Alok Dixit supports Rupa completely and hopes this will have a much broader reach. "We want the acid attack survivors to come out of hiding and tell their stories. It is OK to show your face," he said.

Rahul Saharan, a professional photographer, jumped at the opportunity to do the photo shoot. He wanted to help the fight against acid attacks and show the women how beautiful they are. "In our society, there are lots of things said to the girls — you are not beautiful, you won't get married because your skin is not white and fair," Rahul said. "I want to change the perception of beauty — tell people that the real beauty is not about having a fair skin."

Acid Attack Fighter Rupa's boutique project has been ac

Acid Attack Fighter Rupa's boutique project has been ac

Rupa hopes to use the attention generated by the one-of-a-kind modeling campaign to earn money to open up her own fashion boutique so she can continue making clothes and inspiring women, no matter what obstacles they've had to overcome. And yet, I must admit, that reading the stories of the women featured in the shoot made me realize that every hard thing that's ever happened to me in my life is nothing compared to what these women have endured and then conquered to get where they are. They are definitely more than your average success story.

I feel like this is what I want the Dove beauty campaign to be like — it's nice to tell women who are already conventionally pretty that they should feel beautiful but it feels more meaningful to help us find the beauty in the ugliest of situations.

"When you see pictures used in commercials, you just see and forget them after some time, but when you see these pictures, you feel in love with them," Rahul says. "You want to look at them again and again." He's right, the light that is in these women will stay with me, and I daresay everyone who sees them, for a long, long time.

To read the stories of the women featured in the photo shoot or for more information about what you can do to stop acid attacks and support Rupa, check out their websiteFacebook or Twitter.

Amber Rose gets (almost) naked at the 2014 MTV VMAs

Wiz Khalifa's main squeeze showed up on the red carpet in a barely-there (like really, really barely) dress. Well, we're not even sure this can be called a dress... it's more like a blinged-out chainmail mini with tiny bikini bottoms by designer Laura Dewitt.

Amber Rose VMAs

The 30-year-old's look is a throwback to another iconic VMAs look by actress Rose McGowan. The Craft star — then dating rocker Marilyn Manson — walked the carpet at the 1998 VMAs in a scandalous look that covered, well, nothing.

Rose McGowan 1998 VMAs

Our only concern? How the new mom is going to keep it together inside the theater. You know they're going to have the A.C. blasting and that dress won't keep her from the cold temps. Maybe Wiz brought her a jacket.

She'll probably suffer through it, since she's not afraid to go there with her fashion and wear up-and-coming designers in an effort to be different.

Amber Rose VMAs

"I really like up-and-coming designers also, because I feel like a lot of people don't give them credit 'cause they're not fully established and they kind of just throw them on the back burner," she told Complex in 2012. "But I'm the underdog, so I like to look out for the underdog all the time."

We have to know... who went nearly nude the best, Amber Rose or Rose McGowan?

Some of the biggest stars at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards had something in common... their sleek, slicked-back hairstyles! Rita Ora, Jessie J, Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande all put their own spins on the sexy look.

Break out the flat irons, 'cause you're going to want to copy these looks pronto.

"Black Widow" singer Rita Ora paired her sexy red satin dress with slicked-back platinum blond strands. Copying the look is simple: Just add gel or mousse to dirty strands and brush back. Instant glamour.

Ora's "Black Widow" partner, Iggy Azalea, opted to go with a similar look — right down to the platinum.

We like how the Australian rapper added some extra volume to hers at the crown. Simply add some strategically-placed bobby pins to add the extra oomph on your strands.

Ariana Grande went with a high ponytail with slicked-backed sides. The petite dynamo is turning the high pony into her trademark look.

Grande's "Boom Boom" co-star Jessie J went with her own sleek look, complete with a straight center part.

Love how simple the look is, though it gives off a seriously sexy vibe.

Guess she decided to shake off her normal red carpet looks in favor of something a little more revealing. The blond stunner opted to go for a teeny tiny long-sleeved jumpsuit by Mary Katrantzou. She paired the behind-revealing style with maroon Elie Saab shoes, Lorraine Schwartz earrings.... and her incredible, mile-long legs.

Her look is a definite departure from her country cutie style. These days, she's all about that pop star life and she doesn't care what anyone thinks about it.

"The message in the song is a problem we all deal with, an issue we deal with on a daily basis — we don’t live just in a celebrity takedown culture, we live in a takedown culture," she told Good Morning America of her new song, "Shake It Off."

"People will find anything about you and twist it to where it’s weird or wrong or annoying or strange or bad. You have to not only live your life in spite of people who don’t understand you, you have to have more fun than they do," she continued.

And by the looks of that romper, she's definitely having a blast!

"You're up next. #noexcuses. You have 24 hours to do your best impression," Spears tweeted to the "Dark Horse" singer on Saturday.

"I'll show u my best impression on the red carpet at the VMA's tomorrow... Wait for it bb," Perry replied.

Oh, and she delivered.

The dark-haired singer showed up on the red carpet on Vine star Riff Raff's arm — and they were both clad in custom Versace patchwork denim, a la the look Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore to the 2001 American Music Awards.

And it was on. point.

"This is how we do the remix," Perry said on the red carpet, though we're disappointed Riff Raff didn't add the infamous denim cowboy hat that Timberlake rocked back in the day.

We're pretty sure Spears appreciates the dress, especially since rumor has it she still has the famous dress stuffed somewhere in her archives.

"Well, I don't think it's something you can repeat, what you've done in the past," Spears told MTV News in 2013 of the iconic look. "You always have to bring the new, something new and fresh and that's what I did. Everything is really different and elaborated, and it's very intricate and different."

Goodbye, bodycon dresses. These days, Kim Kardashian — excuse us, Kim Kardashian West — is all about high fashion. Proof? Take a look at the dress she wore to the 2014 VMAs.

Kardashian's patterned Balmain Resort dress featured a cape-like top with a seriously plunging neckline that showed off her bronzed chest. The minidress also showed off her toned legs.

Love the heels, too! They give off a crocheted vibe.

She topped off the look with some seriously sexy tousled waves — and her huge $1.6-million, 15-carat diamond.

It looks like Kanye West's influence on her style is here to stay... and we can't wait to see what sort of red carpet looks she breaks out next.

"You want your guy to think you're really hot. I'll put something on and he'll [Kanye] say, 'No, that doesn't look good,' and I'll trust him," she said in 2013.

But even little Norrie has an influence on what mom wears, too. "I want to dress a little lighter colorwise. I think North looks cute in light colors, and then I want to wear light colors," she added to the Sunday Times. "North doesn't typically wear pink, though. She wears mauve or blush, not, like, typical baby pink."

2014 VMAs red carpet was full of '90s throwback fashion

Quite a few celebs at the VMAs were serving up some '90s realness — and we're getting serious Clueless flashbacks.

And we're definitely not mad about it.

"Boom Clap" singer Charli XCX was definitely leading the pack with her various '90s-esque looks. If ever there was a more quintessential '90s outfit, it's this one. Blue miniskirt? Check. Jacket with faux feather trim? Check. Eye glitter gel? Check. Pretty sure we had this exact same outfit in 1997.

These glasses were pretty much required for every teenage girl in the '90s. Don't lie... you begged your mom to let you spend your allowance on them at Claire's. And the bright faux fur jacket? Perfect.

Pretty sure Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown rocked this same jumpsuit in the Spice Girls' heyday.

And then, we have the guys from 5 Seconds of Summer throwing it back to Seattle grunge with the flannels tied around the waist.

Lorde also has the goth vibe going on with her look. Wonder if those are Dr. Martens on her feet?

Does Jennifer Lopez ever age? Nope — and the glittery, body-baring gown she wore to the VMAs looks like a longer version of the dress she wore for her first music video for 1999's "If You Had My Love."

How to style the look

A lot of us are afraid of mixing colors, but doing so is a lot easier than you actually think. In fact, a flirty dress in a bold hue only looks more chic when worn with complementary heels, so have fun with your accessories. It is summer, after all.
