Why I will not get on board with the new overalls trend

$

0

They're featured in Glamour and Marie Claire for their August denim issues this month and I've even seen them filling out tabloid spreads. I about spilled my trail mix when I noticed an overalls feature in the issue of Us Weekly.

The list of devotees who've hopped on board the overall bandwagon reads like attendees at a Hollywood style summit: Emma Stone, Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne, Kate Bosworth, Olivia Palermo, Miley Cyrus and Zoe Saldana, to name a few.

That's all well and good but here's why I'm not so excited about the deceiving headlines screaming, "Buy overalls now!"

I am all about trends to mix in with the classics to fill out your wardrobe but I hate when a trend is touted that just will not work for most female body types. Overalls are one of those.

Celebrities wearing overalls

I'd venture a guess that roughly 95 percent of the female population should not invest in overalls this season, no matter what the magazines and blogs say. While we've seen this item on thin celebs like Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth, I can't say I've seen any stars with even modest curves sport this trend. I don't think their stylists would allow it. Because the baggy silhouette of overalls widen women where they don't want to be wider.

I once tried these on at an H&M, just to say I had because overalls were also in style a few years ago.

I'm a woman of modest curves, like the majority of American women. I certainly don't have Beyoncé's figure, but I definitely don't have Kate or Zoe's either. I've got a butt and boobs, and let me tell you: Overalls eliminated all sense of curves. They gave me extra weight in the hips, thighs and midsection. They did not lengthen my legs. Did not define a waist. I could not get those suckers off fast enough.

Unless you have a very specific body type, you probably won't ever love a new pair of overalls. In fact, if you often get tempted into trendy buys like I do (guilty!), you'll probably buy overalls, put them on a half dozen mornings and try to make them work with various shoes and tops in front of your mirror, and then finally abandon ship when it's clear they're a lost cause. This trend is best reserved for our 6-year-old selves.

If you like overalls and the way they look on your body? Wear them; go for it. Who am I to tell you what to wear? I just know how easy it is to get lured into buying "the hot new item of the season." Been there, done that, made my style mistakes and have plenty of regrettable buys on my shelves. If you ask me, it's OK to abstain from overalls. You can sit on the sidelines with me and not feel bad. Let's invest in a great new bag or pair of heels instead. 'Kay?

Dana Suchow: Fashion blogger posts 5 unedited photos she wishes she didn't Photoshop

Her headline reads, "Photos I wish I didn't Photoshop," and it exposes a handful of times she used the editing program to change the way her body looks. It was a simple slimming of the tummy here and there that started to weigh on her conscience.

"It's weird, because I stopped manipulating my weight in photos with Photoshop about a year ago. But I just felt like I had lied to my readers and needed to come clean," she tells SheKnows. "I Photoshopped the images in the beginning of starting my blog because I wanted the money type of success," she said. Since those days, she's learned to measure success differently.

Dana Suchow: Fashion blogger posts 5 unedited photos she wishes she didn't Photoshop

"I don't make any money from my blog, so from a fashion blogger business perspective, I am a failure. But to me success is being honest and true about myself no matter how large or small my audience. It's receiving a letter from a young girl in Sweden telling me I made her feel better about her body for a moment. It's looking at my blog and being proud of the content." You better cheer for that like teenage girls screaming for Ryan Gosling.

Too often, it's assumed that if you don't look a certain way you can't be a certain type of person or work in a certain industry... and too often, we believe it. Thankfully, more and more women are proving us wrong.

Dana Suchow: Fashion blogger posts 5 unedited photos she wishes she didn't Photoshop

Still, fashion bloggers treat Photoshop like another shoulder to lean on. It's like an addiction the industry can't break. "Fashion is synonymous with beauty and perfection, and fashion blogging is big business. Fashion makes millions selling perfection to the imperfect, and an imperfect fashion blogger is a tough sell," says Dana.

But here comes the silver lining. When I asked Dana if she ever felt pressure from brands to look a certain way, it was a big fat no. "By now brands know who I am and what I'm about. I think my realism and honesty appeals to them. They know there might be a feminist rant along with their pretty necklace shots. It's a chance they've got to be willing to take." So, stand your ground. You be you and don't hold back.

Dana Suchow: Fashion blogger posts 5 unedited photos she wishes she didn't Photoshop

Hilariously, she says that wedgies are the only thing she edits out these days. (I can respect that). She also stresses that Photoshop isn't the enemy. "It's an amazing program that can make a cloudy day look sunny, it can bring out the greens and blues of a dress so they pop and it can make a blurry photo look like it was taken with a steady hand." Rather, we need to stop abusing the privilege that is Photoshop.

Her message to women and girls everywhere? "Don’t believe anything you see. If you can't touch it, it's not real. The only real thing that will support you through life is your body. And that's something you can hold… right now."

Lastly, she says, "Imagine if women put just half the energy we put into trying to change our bodies into trying to change the world. Imagine what an amazing place it could be."

We'll leave you with that.

Cotton as a skin care ingredient: Hip or hype?

$

0

"Natural oils have become very popular, either as the natural oil or as an ingredient in a product," says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research, Department of Dermatology, Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Cottonseed oil in particular is a versatile oil to use: It's reasonably manufactured and can easily be mixed into other oils and topical combinations (which is pretty much a dream come true for beauty companies).

According to the National Cottonseed Products Association website, as advances in science and technology continue, they expect the trend of using cotton in products like soaps and cosmetics to grow. Among its many talents: "Cotton and its derivatives are high in vitamin E, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which are all anti-inflammatory, helping to soothe skin and calm redness," says Dr. David Bank, dermatologist and author of Beautiful Skin: Every Woman's Guide to Looking her Best at Any Age. "They also fight free radicals, which have been known to inflame skin."

So does this mean we should start stocking up on cotton-spiked skin care products? Not necessarily: While cotton has good hydration and anti-inflammatory properties, there are other ingredients that can also produce these effects. There's really no way to tell if cotton-infused skin care products are "better" than the rest, since products have to be judged based on their ingredients as a whole and how they co-mingle. "Cotton-based skin care isn't necessarily 'better' — just different," says Dr. Purvisha Patel, owner and dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Associates.

Regardless, if the presence of cotton in my beauty products means it might help prevent a fine line or two, I think it's well worth taking the plunge. Here are a few cotton-infused product recommendations, courtesy of Dr. Bank and Dr. Debra Jaliman, M.D., dermatologist and author of Skin Rules:

Beauty products made with cotton

1. Napoleon Cotton Butter Lip Balm

The neutral shades of Napoleon Cotton Butter Lip Balm are uber-versatile, while cottonseed oil and vitamin E keep lips soft and hydrated. Best of all, there's no sharpening required. It's like doing your makeup with a jumbo twist-pen. (NapoleonPerdis.com, $45)

2. Supreme Cleansing Oil by Sephora

Supreme Cleansing Oil by Sephora is a gentle makeup remover suitable for all skin types. It contains cottonseed oil, as well as vitamins A and E. It's also easy to use: Just pump into your hands and rub onto dry skin, or add water to change the oil into a lotion. (Sephora, $15)

3. Murad Age Balancing Night Cream

Murad Age Balancing Night Cream contains a blend of essential fatty acids and shea butter, which offer intense hydration to dry, dull skin. (Sephora, $75)

4. Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser

Formulated with coconut and fatty acids to protect your skin's balance, Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser eliminates impurities and excess oil without causing irritation. (Sephora, $23)

Woohoo! ModCloth makes history with no-Photoshop pledge

$

The Heroes Pledge for Advertisers was started by advocates of the Truth in Advertising bill. By signing it, ModCloth has agreed to "do our best to not change the shape, size, proportion, colors and/or remove/enhance the physical features, of the people in our ads in post-production."

They have also pledged to make note of any major alterations with a "Truth in Advertising" label that describes the changes. Because, after all, fixing a few hair wispies and a wrinkle or two is one thing, but we can all pretty much agree getting crazy with the 'shop tools is going out of style.

A post on the ModCloth blog calls the pledge "a courageous movement."

"We have agreed to label images of models who have been Photoshopped because that’s what we all deserve," the post reads. "To know the truth!"

Those who are fans of the brand (and really, who isn't?) already know ModCloth features lots of so-called "real looking" models of many shapes and colors, and they boast a pretty extensive plus-sized line as well. So their latest pledge just keeps the body-positive train rolling, and we hope other brands agree to jump on.

What other brands would you love to see take the no-Photoshop pledge?

But there's also something that I can't ever really attach to... the idea of "fashion." I've never related to that in the strictest sense of the word. It's a cold term. It's a lifeless term.

On the other hand, "style" is something I can embrace and that was clearer than ever when I came across The What's Underneath Project. The mission? To honor how "style is not the clothes you wear, but comfort in your own skin. It's not a facade. It is your spirit."

Participants are asked to remove an article of clothing with each question they answer. The questions range from, "When do you feel most beautiful?" to "How do you describe your style?" and the answers end up revealing more about each person's inner beauty than anything they wear.

There's Aglae, who has worked through bullying and eating disorders to make it as a model and recalls that while modeling may have caused her eating disorder, it also saved her from it.

These are brave souls, not just because they were willing to strip down to their undergarments in front of a camera, but because of the stories they simultaneously share — and all of them have an amazing, intuitive sense of personal style. It doesn't exude from their clothes, per se, but from the way they wear them.

So as you ready yourself for fall, and see all sorts of "fashion" around you, I hope you'll curate a style that really says something about who you are underneath. You get to project who you are, and I hope you'll use that power — because, in the words of Rachel Zoe, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak."

What Lauren Bacall taught me about real beauty

$

The girl was real. She didn't sugarcoat the truth; she'd give it to you straight. And it's that same cool, laid-back candor that made her a star with actual staying power, both on-screen and off.

But what people don't always realize about the actress — although she was known for her sultry voice and cutting "Look" — was that she didn't have oodles of confidence. Just because someone's beautiful and blunt doesn't mean she's not filled with the same insecurities that plague everyone else. Take a look at some of the things she said over the years.

"I'm really a very shy and insecure person. I don't know why everyone has this formidable image of me." [NJ.com]

 Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart

"I used to tremble from nerves so badly that the only way I could hold my head steady was to lower my chin practically to my chest and look up at Bogie [future husband Humphrey Bogart]. That was the beginning of 'The Look.'" [Parade]

"I'm not tough, and I never have been. I suppose over the years I've built up kind of a veneer to protect myself, because I have functioned on my own for a long, long time... " [Parade]

Lauren was shy, nervous and vulnerable. She had doubts and insecurities about her talent, her looks. She never thought she was particularly special or beautiful, calling her stardom a mere "accident" and once telling a Vogue photographer how best to shoot her "peculiar face."

I like to remember that whenever I'm having one of those ugly days where I feel sure life would be easier if I was simply prettier, thinner, smarter... better.

Regardless of how she felt, you'd never have know Lauren was insecure, because she never let her insecurities own her; she owned them.

Even as she grew older, Lauren displayed a great sense of perspective. She was the image of aging gracefully and living vibrantly. "I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that," she once said. That is true beauty, and something I hope you'll remember.

We'll certainly remember you, Lauren. RIP.

5 Innovative bra technologies you have to try

$

Between uncomfortable underwires and slipping straps, bras can be a major pain in the you know what. Sure, they support our best assets and help make clothes look more polished, but you can't deny the fact that many bras are plain ole uncomfortable.

That's why we're abundantly happy that the top bra brands out there are working overtime to produce designs that fit well and don't, you know, suffocate you and your girls. These are five innovative bra technologies we're definitely excited to check out.

1. Victoria's Secret's Memory Fit Bras

We've heard of memory foam pillows and even shoes, but bras? Yeah, that's something new. It makes sense when you think about it, though. Over time, your bras stretch out and lose their shape, so if you can mold them to your body right from the get go, why not? Victoria's Secret Memory Fit technology bras feel soft to the touch and conform to your curves, so you'll get the best possible fit.

2. Bali Passion for Comfort bras

We're always looking for soft, comfy bras, but a lot of bras fitting that description don't offer much actual support. Lucky for us, Bali's Passion for Comfort bras combine both comfort and function. Their Cool Comfort design keeps you cool and Comfort-U Design keeps those pesky straps and back in place. What a double threat, huh?

3. Playtex TruSupport design

Looking for serious support? Playtex has you covered. The brand's TruSupport bras feature a 4-way support system that gives you an incredible fit thanks to higher sides (for support and coverage), comfortable straps (to reduce digging), fuller cups (to give a natural shape) and smooth backs (to get you stability without ride-up).

4. Lane Bryant's Cooling Bra

In the dog days of summer, we'll take any built-in fanning system we can get, so we were psyched to hear about Lane Bryant's Cooling Bra. It features microfiber technology to keep you cool, a mesh center panel and back band, and breathable, molded underwire cups. Bra technology that keeps the air flowing and boob sweat at bay? We could get used to that.

Julianne Hough has a genius way to wear a grown-out pixie

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Julianne Hough

Braids, updos and the like are all a bit challenging to create, after all, when your hair is short. But Julianne Hough has shown us an easy yet adorable way to style your growing-out pixie to resemble a complex updo.

We got Moroccanoil’s Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero to share his tips for recreating Julianne's braided 'do in a few simple steps. You're welcome!

Get the look

  1. For the perfect foundation, apply the Moroccanoil Treatment on damp hair. It is the perfect foundation for smooth, frizz-free style. It also makes hair easier to manage for creating the edgy pieces in the front.
  2. To add texture, apply the Moroccanoil Root Boost directly on the root. This will create lift and body at the top, essential for achieving Julianne’s style.
  3. Create a deep part on the right side. Blow dry hair with a small 25 mm Boar Bristle Round Brush, brushing hair toward the back of the head.
  4. Create a very loose crown braid, starting on the right side (going toward left). Secure with a bobby pin.
  5. Using the new Moroccanoil Molding Cream gently add extra texture and pull out pieces with fingertips. The Molding Cream will help create the piecey texture and added messiness with long-lasting hold and a shiny, frizz-free, edgy style.
  6. Tame flyaways and secure the style with a fine mist of the Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray.

Taylor Swift

After a brief break from acting, Taylor Swift is back on the big screen this week in The Giver, and naturally, she's celebrating in style. To attend the film's New York premiere, the singer selected a ladylike two-toned gown we can't get enough of.

Taylor's sense of style has evolved immensely over the past few years and these days she seems to split her time between retro, girly looks and sexy styles. Lucky for us, this pretty premiere look combined the best of both worlds. A full, flowy skirt in a delicate hue lent Taylor a retro, classic vibe while the hot red top of the dress and its modern neckline were so 2014. Taylor swept her soft, wavy bob to the side and went for a pop of red lips to complement the look.

The final verdict? Some of our fave TSwift fashion moments are ones like this. Why? Because they perfectly showcase the best style she has to offer without going overboard.

With Labor Day hounding at our heels, a lot of ladies are making the most of their white summer dresses, and Emmy Rossum seems to be in the same fashion boat. The actress stepped out in a flirty LWD this week and made our best dressed list yet again.

Emmy's scoop neck, A-line style looks breezy and effortless on its own but takes on an air of sophistication when styled with prim white pumps, a bold red bag and cool shades. Such is the power of accessorizing, ladies! Emmy kept her beauty look simple, opting for straight locks and a subtle pout to let her white dress really pop. The result? Beautiful.

The final verdict? Emmy is basically a street style icon in our book, and it's approachable looks like this one that separate her from the rest of the style pack.

Practical yet fashionable skinnies

Skinny jeans are fantastic because of their elasticity. They show off a woman's curves without fear of suffocation — in fact, many women say that their skinnies are their most comfortable pair of jeans. When you wear skinnies, you project that you're fashion-forward and energetic.

Best for: Any activity that requires a lot of motion — since they won't slide down — and a polished appearance. Wear while traveling, going for a walk or jumping around at an outdoor concert.

Party hardy with a flare

Look around the next party you attend. Who is wearing flare jeans? Most likely, it's the women who are confident and commanding in a group setting.

Best for: A night on the town. Or, if you're like January Jones, a nice lunch with toddler in tow.

Daring and sexy super-skinnies

Not sure what super-skinny jeans look like? Think of jeggings. These jeans are so tight and so elastic that they could pass for leggings in the right light. Super-skinnies communicate sexiness, sultriness and confidence.

Best for: Clubbing. Rock concerts. Radio interviews. But please, ladies, don't wear these to work or your daughter's preschool.

Trendy and unique vintage wear

Vintage jeans, like high-waisted bell-bottoms, totally have their place in fashion. They're incredibly versatile and they allow women to create a unique look that others can't copy. If you wear vintage jeans of any kind, you communicate that you're bold and unafraid.

Best for: Anything. Vintage wear allows you to create a unique look that can fit anything you want to do. And since it's trendy without trying too hard, you really don't need to worry about a misstep.

Maxin' and relaxin' boyfriend jeans

Selma Blair out running errands

Could boyfriend jeans look any more comfortable? A nicely fitted pair of boyfriend jeans suggests that you're casual, laid-back and approachable.

Best for: Running errands, completing household chores or walking the dog. They're perfect for active women or a casual chic weekend.

Every woman needs a pair of boot-cut jeans in her closet. These jeans say that you're powerful and feminine.

Best for: Casual Fridays at work, presentations and first dates.

No-nonsense straight leg

Straight-leg jeans get no love, and that's really a shame. They're flattering, but they also suggests that you don't take yourself too seriously. Wear them with a ponytail and you'll look completely adorable.

Best for: Multitasking moms. Are you going to work, then happy hour, then grocery shopping? The straight-leg is for you.

Flare jeans

When it comes to a flare cut, the actual flare of the jeans matters less than the start of the flare. A flare cut jean will fit snugly around the waist, booty and thighs, and then begin to flare out just below the knee.

Fit tip: The flare of the jean can make this a very forgiving cut for women who carry a little extra weight through the thighs and knees.

Skinny jeans

Your skinny jeans are designed to fit very snugly from your waist all the way down to your ankles. Thankfully, modern styles include elastic in the jean material, so the snugness won't translate into discomfort.

Fit tip: Don't play around with a low waistline on a skinny jean. The elastic in the fabric will cause the jean to slide down over your booty if it's not fitted firmly around your actual waist.

Boot cut jeans

Boot-cut jeans are fitted around the waist and taper into the knee until they flare at the top or middle of the calf muscle.

Fit tip: Boot-cut jeans were originally created to fit around a boot, but can also be folded to fit inside a knee-high shoe for winter. The cut can also make them look like skinny jeans when they're smushed into a boot.

Straight-leg jeans

Jennifer Aniston takes a stroll

Just like the name suggests, straight-leg jeans are straight from the waist all the way down to the ankle. The leg should be fairly narrow (although a little wiggle room is nice), and there should be no flare or tapering throughout its length.

Fit tip: We love straight-leg jeans as an update to the reviled mommy jean cut. They're forgiving, comfortable and they look great with a pair of pumps.

Boyfriend jeans

The boyfriend jeans are tricky for a lot of body types. They are fitted around the waist or hips, but lie loosely around the booty and the thighs before tapering in for and hitting just above the ankle. Boyfriend jeans should have a low waistline and look slouchy and comfortable.

Fit tip: These jeans are comfortable, but they should be paired with a fitted top to keep it casual chic.

Lena Dunham has a new bowl cut, but there’s more

The Girls star ditched her signature brown bob for a new very blond 'do. But one hair change wasn't quite enough for the actress, Lena took things one step further and cut her hair into a bowl cut, too. Naturally, she took her new look to Instagram to show it off, captioning the post "change is good."

Lena Dunham: Platium blond hairdo

Lena Dunham: Platium blond hairdo

Change can indeed be good, but we were pretty shocked (and a bit excited) to see Lena's bold hair move nonetheless. Of course, Lena is no stranger to daring sartorial moves, and is known as much for her unique style as she is for her badass personality, so we're not that surprised.

Giuliana Rancic and Anna Paquin

Lena is just one of many celeb ladies rocking a bold new 'do this summer. E! News personality Giuliana Rancic also made the switch from brown to platinum last month and Anna Paquin went dark with her new purple 'do, to name a few, so she's in good company.

Whether you love Lena's new 'do or not, you've got to admit the gal has the confidence to rock just about any look!

We want to know: Are you obsessed with Lena's new platinum hair or should she go back to brown?

How to style the look

White pants in a breezy material are always a great option for summer work style. Pair them with a breathable sleeveless top and layer on a 3/4-sleeve blazer for the time you spend in that chilly cubicle. Strappy wedge booties and some statement earrings will give you just enough of an extra style edge to let you easily take this look from the office to drinks with the girls.
