How to organize your makeup stash

$

0

Another great idea is to put your makeup brushes in a straw holder and and then put all of your most used beauty items on a lazy susan for easy access.

Put them on your bathroom counter or wherever you do your makeup and ta-da, you have all of your essentials organized and not taking up a bunch of space.

9 Fixes to make embarrassing nails immaculate

1. Dry/rough cuticles

Butter Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator

If you're not the biggest fan of cutting and trimming your cuticles, then take Butter Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator for a spin. It's a gentle cuticle exfoliator that helps break down dead skin cells and softens your cuticles. Over time, they even become less overgrown. (Ulta, $19)

2. Hangnails

Hangnails

Hangnails. Barf. When your hands are dried out from regular hand washing or polish changes, these little critters can become as relentless as the stage five clinger you were set up with last weekend. Curel Hand & Cuticle Therapy Cream is a heavy duty moisturizer that'll soothe that sandpaper skin of yours. It's also a cuticle-strengthener (in other words, fewer broken nails), and continues to do its job no matter how many times you wash your hands. (Amazon.com, $15)

3. Ridges

Ridges

Few things are more annoying than doing your nails, only to find you can see every crack and crevice — if anything, the polish enhances them. Enter Deborah Lippmann Ridge Filler Base: It's a base coat that helps smooth out the bumpy, uneven portions of your nails. It looks great on its own too. Either way, you get to say sayonara to line-riddled manicures. (Nordstrom, $20)

4. Discoloration

Discoloration

Whether they're looking funky from all those dark polish applications or have yellowed from (gasp!) a fungal infection (hey, it happens), consider Develop 10 Nail Whitening Scrub to be your knight in shining armor. It's a water-based solution with lemon juice that gradually removes the stains on your nails and gives them a healthy-looking appearance. (Ulta, $7)

5. Weak nails

Weak nails

My mom has Terminator-strength nails… and I didn't even come close to inheriting them. If your digits are prone to breakage and peeling, Julep Oxygen Treatment is your ticket to stronger nails. This perfecting nail tint allows your nails to breathe while strengthening and conditioning them. (Sephora, $18)

6. Slow growth

Slow growth

If you're starting to feel as if your nails are never going to grow (like, ever), Butter London Horse Power Nail Fertilizer will help speed up the process. It contains horsetail extract, which is a powerful herb rich in nutrients. The formula helps strengthen and soothe nails, and can be used as a base coat, top coat or on its own. (Ulta, $19)

7. Brittle nails

Brittle nails

If you use nail polish religiously, you're bound to run into a brittle, cracked nail or two (or 10). Give your digits a vacay — including the spa treatment. Orly BB Crème is an all-in-one topical treatment that helps smooth, moisturize and brighten your nails with a sheer peach tint, while protecting against future breakage. (Orly.com, $15)

8. Fungus

Fungus

Oy to the vey: Fungus is the worst. Nailtiques Fungus Treatment is an oil that will kibosh the spread of nail fungus infections both on and under your nails. Take that! (Ulta, $22)

9. White spots

White spots

Contrary to popular belief, white spots on your nails don't indicate a vitamin deficiency — they just mean your nail bed was injured at some point (either from picking, biting or banging your nail against something). The only solution to this problem is patience: Allowing them to grow out, and not being such a klutz in the future. In the meantime, why not cover them up with a snazzy polish color, like Essie's Urban Jungle — grrr, baby! (Beauty.com, $9).

Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick

11. Rodial Skincare Bee Venom

Rodial Skincare Bee Venom

Last but not least, this bee venom skin care essence is by far the priciest gold option, but it basically promises to keep you looking young forever. With gold, bee venom and high-tech peptides, it might just work. (Beauty.com, $470)

So what do you think — can gold really make all the difference in your own beauty routine? Or does the trend remind you of Tobias Funke, wearing his wife's skin cream made from crushed diamonds?

Lou Teasdale shared this snap on Instagram earlier this week and we fell in love immediately.

Hair tapestry

Hair tapestry

Stylist Alex Brownsell from Bleach London created the look for Dazed Magazine by weaving black and white thread along a random section of hair, along with a colorful heart. The rest of the model's brown hair was left textured with a small patch pulled into a perfectly messy updo to show off Brownsell's handiwork.

We're dying to try this out, but weren't exactly sure how to start. A quick search on Instagram gave us this step-by-step pictorial. All you need is an embroidery circle, some thicker, yarn-like thread and a knitting needle to get started. Then, let your creativity take over.

For us, the hair tapestry is all about creating an original look, so don't be afraid to try something different. We guarantee that your friends — and all of Instagram and Pinterest — will be dying to copy your look.

5 Beauty products you need for scorching summer days

$
0
0

Now that the high heat and humidity of the summer have hit, I'm all about feeling fresh all day long. My goal is to avoid a midsummer version of me with a super shiny T-zone, hair that's deflated and raccoon eyes from my melted makeup. I don't want to spend hours getting ready each morning, but I've found that with a few added products I can achieve my goal. Even better, I stay fresh all day long without needing to refresh throughout the day.

1. Dry shampoo

On hot summer days I spray a little all over my hair every day, even if I've just washed my hair. It add volume while soaking up oil and sweat to help my hair looking great all day long. No more flat midday hair.

2. Shadow base

The secret behind keeping your eye makeup in place all day long is primer. There are a lot of great ones available at every price point. Just swipe one on before you apply your shadow and it will look freshly applied all day long. I wear primer year round, but it seems especially important in the summer.

3. Waterproof your liner and mascara

I like to waterproof my mascara and eyeliner. I've found that in high heat and humidity, my normal smudge-proof liners and mascara just won't stay put. Swapping out to waterproof products means that my makeup still looks great after a long day out in the sun.

4. Mattifying primer

I have combination skin, and in the summer it can be hard to keep the shine to a minimum. Rather than applying powder all day long, I've found that applying a mattifying primer under my foundation or BB cream is a much better option. Primer is very lightweight and dries clear, so I can't even tell that I'm wearing it. Just a small amount is enough to keep my T-zone shine-free without needing to reapply powder all day long.

5. Super strength antiperspirant

I just started using a "clinical strength" antiperspirant a few weeks ago, and I'm impressed! The increase in active ingredients has been keeping me bone dry every day. I went back to my previous antiperspirant for a few days to compare and I felt a bit damp, though I know I wasn't really sweating. The great news is that these products are available over the counter, so you don't need a prescription.

Body painting like you've never seen it before

$

Robin Slonina owns her own body painting studio called Skin City in Las Vegas and is also a judge on Skin Wars, a body painting competition on Game Show Network (yes, there is a reality show about this and it.is.intense).

Rest assured, this isn't about doodling designs on your body with Crayola paint. Robin received a fine arts degree, and prior to body painting she was a mural painter in Chicago. She moved to Las Vegas after falling for a Cirque du Soleil performer and found a way to make her art thrive in Sin City... by painting murals on bodies.

Body painting like you've never seen it before

It's not just about stage shows, pole dancers or contortionists. She has private clients, too, and that is where the magic happens. "A lot of people from all over the country and all over the world find our website. They actually plan trips to Las Vegas specifically to come to Skin City and get body painted," Robin explained. "We've had a school teacher from Iowa come just to live out a fantasy of getting painted like Wonder Woman with full pampering." Think of it as a spa weekend getaway without the massage.

The transformation is something Robin describes as rewarding. "Most of these women have never had a makeover like this so when they look in the mirror it's just amazing to watch their expression as they really start to fully embody this transformation," she says. "The way they walk is different after they've been painted."

Body painting like you've never seen it before

One of the most emotional jobs she's had is with military wives who came in and got painted in their husband's army fatigues. Most jobs involve a photo shoot and these are no different. "[We] send the pictures off as a reminder and a token of love to their partners who are quite isolated," said Robin.

As you can guess, it takes a long time to get body painted. Robin can really get to know her clients. They share stories and even have to take laughing breaks. "When you're body painting someone it's almost like [being] a hairdresser. They really open up and they talk. It can be quite an emotional and almost spiritual experience."

And did we mention funny? Several grooms have actually come to the studio to get the famous Mike Tyson tattoo painted on their face a la The Hangover film and surprise their brides at the altar. Robin has also done zombie-themed weddings and weddings where the bride and groom were painted into their gown and tuxedo. Clothes are overrated anyways, right?

I'm starting to imagine all the possibilities — just think of Coachella. Your own temporary tattoos for summer beach days? Decorating your arm before girls' night out? You may not be a trained fine artist, but Robin doesn't think that should stop you from having some fun with body paint. "You can always find good, fun reference pictures online," she points out and recommends starting with patterns like cheetah spots and zebra stripes. "It's a really fun way to heighten your outfit for the night."

And getting the supplies is as easy as buying makeup. Robin recommends Chromacake by MAC, sold at select MAC stores, or Makeup Forever products which are carried at select Sephora stores. "You can [also] experiment with pressing cosmetic grade glitter into the wet paint."

In the meantime, for more inspiration, you can catch Robin and the outrageous body painting competition on Skin Wars, premiering tonight 9/8c on Game Show Network.

10 Makeup hacks that will make you a beauty genius

There are tons of great ways to max out your products' value and versatility. Here are some of my favorite sneaky little beauty "hacks."

1. Spike your concealer

Mix liquid highlighter with your under eye concealer to create your own brightening concealer. Two parts concealer to 1 part highlight. Adjust as preferred.

10 Beauty hacks that will make you a makeup genuis

2. Re purpose your mascara brush

Save the mascara wand from your pricier mascaras to maximize your cheaper formulas — i.e., a Benefit They're Real brush is plastic and easy to clean and reuse in your drugstore faves. It will really maximize that formula.

Use a bronzer as a transition color in your crease. I do it all the time and it's an awesome way to multitask and get your money's worth.

6. Prevent smudged eyeliner

Draw eyeliner directly onto your brush to apply a soft, smudged line. This is quicker, softer and easier than lining and then smudging.

7. Use face oil to revive makeup at the end of the day

Dip your wet beauty blender into moisturizer or facial oil to revive makeup and add glow. Concentrate on the highest points of your face, mainly cheekbones. You'll be highlighted sans the sparkle.

8. Use concealer as eye primer instead of buying it

Use concealer on lids as an eye primer. Until eye primer really became a thing, I always did this. It cancels out any veins and discoloration and gives your shadow something to adhere to.

Shenae Grimes and Josh Beech's new fashion venture

$
0
0

It's sold exclusively on TwoHalvesStore.com and we immediately fell for its edgy vibe. The collection features T-shirts, necklaces, earrings, rings and more.

So what can you expect from the line? Two Halves blends Shenae's signature boho rocker style and Josh's punk rock roots to create a cool boy-meets-girl, '60s-meets-'80s, East-meets-West vibe. Eager to find out more about the collection, we picked Shenae and Josh's brains for their inspiration behind a few of our favorite pieces.

Two Halves, two minds

Charmer Ring ($55)

Charmer Ring ($55)

She says: I've always wanted a big snake ring and I've hunted far and wide but never found a great one that fit my finger (I have baby hands!) so I really wanted to make one for the first collection. The adjustable ring fits sizes 4-8 and just looks rad, plain and simple.

He says: A snake ring in antique finish or gold... What's not to like? This is one of the strongest pieces in the first collection in my opinion and I can't wait to see people rocking it around the globe.

Warrior Necklace ($75)

Warrior Necklace ($75)

She says: Though it's hard to choose, I'd have to say this (in both finishes) is my favorite piece of the whole collection because it's the first one we made. We're always taking trips out to the desert and on one particular trip, I found an amazing old arrowhead. Without any particular use for it at the time, I brought it home knowing it would inspire me in some way or another down the line. Before we knew it, we were sourcing a manufacturer to get it made and the birth of Two Halves as a clothing and accessories brand was well on its way.

He says: I love the warrior necklace. It's the first product we did and it kinda sparked the whole idea for the Two Halves store, so this piece will always be special to me.

Tree Chopper Antique Finish Necklace (currently sold out)

Tree Chopper Antique Finish Necklace (currently sold out)

She says: This was Josh's baby out of the whole collection. While he loved the other necklace designs, he wanted to do one that was more male influenced and what's more manly than a primitive axe?! He was very specific about the idea and walked me through sketching it. We work very closely with our manufacturer and when we went in to see the sample, they literally brought my sketch and Josh's brainchild to life. It was incredible!

He says: The first piece that I designed so obviously I love it!!! It has already sold out on our store once so I am super stoked.

Skull Logo Tee ($30)

Skull Logo Tee ($30)

She says: I love this tee and we will soon be releasing other styles with this logo too! The skull with the headdress was inspired by a recent tattoo of Josh's along with our infinite love of skulls, biker culture, Halloween and Native American artifacts. I initially sketched this image in pencil and our incredible graphic designer Jon Barmby and his illustrator pal Lloyd Stratton recreated it digitally. It's timeless and is a beautiful summation of the two aesthetics from which we pull our inspiration... boho biker at its best.

He says: It's our logo on a tee, inspired by one of my recent tattoos. I can't wait to have more products with this [design] as I love the design and everything that it represents for me and the wifey.

Hollywood Misfit Crop ($25)

Hollywood Misfit Crop ($25)

She says: I was adamant [about] doing a comfy one-size-fits-all crop top because they're all I wear in the summer. He told me to come up with a list of slogans and the one that really stood out to him was "Hollywood Misfit." We've both worked in the entertainment industry for years in different capacities and struggled to find a personal connection to the glitz and glam that go hand in hand with the careers we love. In a way, the "Hollywood" in the slogan is really just a metaphor for mainstream society and pop culture. We believe a lot of people exist within it, around it or beside it who feel like misfits in one way or another as well.

He says: If I was a chick I would rock one. In fact, if I was Rocky in Rocky 2 running up the beach with Apollo Creed I would 100 percent rock one too. These are badass.

The new face of NARS has wrinkles and we love it

$

My thoughts are trained to gravitate toward youth. I imagine up-and-coming models like Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne, or 20-something actresses like Blake Lively and Jennifer Lawrence. To me, sadly, beauty is usually defined through stereotypically "fresh" faces — but NARS and Marc Jacobs Beauty are redefining "fresh" this fall, opting for mature faces to front their new campaigns.

NARS has decided to use 68-year-old British actress Charlotte Rampling in press for their Audacious Lipstick fall cosmetics line, while Marc Jacobs just released images of 64-year-old Hollywood darling Jessica Lange.

Charlotte Rampling

Charlotte Rampling

You can still see the lines on actresses' faces when the brands could have left those "flaws" on the cutting room floor. The ads speak to what cosmetics should be: a simple enhancement of your experiences in life. Makeup should give you more confidence, but it's not what makes you more beautiful. It's just another reason for those laugh lines.

Jessica Lange

Jessica Lange

Now that I've seen these images, I'm surprised we haven't seen more mature, natural beauties among the younger crop we always see in magazines — because at the end of the day, youth fades quickly but true beauty never dies out. Both Jessica and Charlotte are stunning examples of aging gracefully, and capture the purest idea of what makes someone beautiful; it's exuding depth and character instead of perfectly toned figures or wrinkle-free faces.

Lines give these images life. And, having really lived (in your makeup or out of it) is all that matters.

In case you missed it, these temporary tattoos are the coolest new summer accessory >>

Some of these faux tattoos can cost up to $25, so why not rock one that you can make with products you probably already have?

DIY Temporary metallic tattoo tutorial

Supplies:

  • Metallic silver waterproof liquid liner or cream shadow
  • Metallic gold waterproof liquid liner or cream shadow
  • Synthetic liner brushes
  • Stencils or create your own with washi tape, X-Acto knife, marker and business cards
  • Setting spray
  • Eye makeup remover to clean up

DIY Temporary metallic tattoo tutorial

Instructions:

In choosing a design, I found that stencils from the craft store had a lot of butterflies and stars. I just wanted more hipster-like shapes, so I made my own stencils. To do so, either trace a design onto a business card and cut out with an X-Acto knife or cut small designs into washi tape. Consider using decorative hole punches too.

DIY Temporary metallic tattoo tutorial

I created my own metallic liquid liner by mixing cream shadow, Maybelline Color Tattoo, with liquid shimmer, LORAC's 3D Liquid Lustre. Urban Decay and Make Up For Ever make great waterproof metallic liquid liners. I also replicated a gold bracelet design with L'Oreal's Silkissime Liner in Gold.

DIY Temporary metallic tattoo tutorial

Body and face paint will work too, but I find the most long-wearing and most metallic formulas are found in cosmetic products. Many are made to be waterproof so they'll stick around longer.

Press the stencil you've created firmly against your skin and stipple on cream shadow or paint on liquid liner. If you use washi tape, be very careful lifting it away. Create a solid line by placing two pieces of washi tape side by side and filling in the space in between. You can create chevron designs this way too.

DIY Temporary metallic tattoo tutorial

Clean up any stray edges with waterproof eye makeup remover and a precision cotton swab.

To ensure your new tattoo doesn't go anywhere, set it with a spray of setting spray, or even hairspray will do.

Don't be afraid to freehand designs too. If you need inspiration for on-trend designs, try looking at Aztec designs, triangles, chevrons, chain links or sketch a word or name you love in freehand cursive.

Nail polish now comes in Louboutin's legendary red shade

$
0

At 8 years old, it was also a whopping fortune — a whole 88 cents a bottle — but buy it I did, because they always had some color the budding beauty geek in me was lusting after. And at the end of the day, it only set me back a Snickers bar for the week.

When I graduated to adult beauty buys, which I had to budget for, I made sure I saved dough for a few bottles of my all-time favorite nail lacquers: OPI. At $8 a pop, it was a splurge... but *swoon.* The hues were vivid and varied, and so virtually chip-proof that it was more like a nail shield. To this day, these are the nail colors I compare all other nail colors to — even when I decide to break the bank on a NARS or Deborah Lippmann shade.

And by "break the bank," I mean somewhere in the neighborhood of $20, which when you think about it is still kind of crazy for a bottle of nail color. But sometimes there's that one ultra-specific shade only that one company makes, and I just flat-out gotta have it.

That said, I absolutely draw the line at the $50 price tag you'll find on a bottle of Christian Louboutin's new "Rouge Louboutin" nail colour. I draw the line well before that, actually. Because for $50, I could buy concert tickets. Or a new handbag. Or six shades of OPI and a candy bar. It is just that outrageous.

I get that Louboutin red is a legendary color in the world of style. I do. But $50? If Louboutin nails will cost me that much cash, I'm going to slap on a coat of OPI's "Cajun Shrimp" instead. Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Charlize Theron

Now that she's growing out the 'do, Charlize is experimenting a lot with her hair, and she recently wore her locks in a cropped curly 'do for a red carpet event. Eager to copy the look, we turned to Marc Mena, Senior Stylist at the Warren-Tricomi Salon in NYC, to get the step-by-step tips. Have fun styling!

Get the look

  1. In order to get Charlize’s look, the key is to blow dry hair smooth first. Once hair is blown out, curl 1-inch sections of hair with a 3/4-inch curling iron. Make sure you are curling everything in the same direction. Editor's note: For added body and shine, wash hair first with Suave Natural Infusion Seaweed All Day Body Shampoo & Conditioner.
  2. Once you finish curling, spray with non-aerosol hairspray and then brush out using a flat paddle brush.
  3. To get added shine, use a pomade like Keratin Complex Iconic Polish. Put a pea-size amount in your hand and rub until the product has almost dissolved in your hand. Then run fingers through your hair, starting with the back and working your way forward.
  4. At the end, use fingers to style hair into the shape you want.

Mel B

Every week on America's Got Talent, millions of viewers tune in to check out the latest talented act advancing in the competition, but we're always ogling judge Mel B's outfits on the sly. This week, the beautiful Brit stepped out for The X Factor auditions in England wearing the prettiest pink dress we've seen in quite some time.

Naturally, we're crushing on this hot little number. Between the vibrant hot pink hue, the flared white bell sleeve wrists and the surprise colorblocked, zippered back detail, this LPD (little pink dress) is anything but generic. It's a little bit retro, a little bit flirty and a lot sassy — just like Mel. Black ankle strap sandals and matching polish were really all Mel needed to complete the colorful look and keep things clean.

The final verdict? All eyes were on this gorgeous dress, but we also love Mel's no-fuss updo and summery glow. They keep her looking professional and polished and don't take away from this show-stopper of a dress.

Chloe Grace Moretz

Have you started counting down the days until Chloe Grace Moretz's new film If I Stay hits theaters? We're pretty certain the book-turned-movie is going to be another blockbuster, and are already planning our movie excursion. This week, the young actress looked pretty and flirty while signing copies of the book at a Barnes & Noble.

Chloe is one of those lucky ladies who can make just about any style work effortlessly, and the actress has tried quite a few looks on for size in her several years in the business. Here, she flirted with both revealing and buttoned-up styles for a fun style juxtaposition. We adore her pretty blue embellished skirt and daring sheer lace top. The "is she or isn't she wearing a bra" effect isn't usually considered classy, but Chloe is indeed all covered up and toeing the line between sexy and sophisticated quite perfectly.

The final verdict? Chloe added to her style home run with retro white heels and a toned down beauty look perfect for the office. Is it so wrong to envy a 17-year-old's wardrobe? Cuz we certainly do.

The star of The Vampire Diaries and Let's Be Cops showed off her braiding know-how in what her stylist Riawna Capri calls "The Red Carpet Rope Braid." Paired with a sultry smoky eye and a technicolor crop top and shorts combo, Nina's unique braid looked summery, polished and sassy.

Now it's time for you to try your hand at Nina's cool style. We got the scoop from Riawna (Nine Zero One Salon) on how to achieve this hair masterpiece.

Get the look

  1. Start by blow drying locks using KMS California FREESHAPE Quick Blow Dry to cut down on drying time and leave more time to style your pretty braid.
  2. After hair is all dry, spritz strands with KMS California FREESHAPE 2-in-1 Styling and Finishing Spray before curling with a 1-inch curling iron in big vertical sections. This technique will give you a nice, messy beach wave.
  3. Flip your head over now and spray locks with a generous dose of KMS HAIRPLAY Playable Texture. You want to saturate the hair and create a cool disheveled texture.
  4. Now it's time to braid! To create the rope braid, start by separating hair into 3 sections. Next, twist them clockwise and braid these twisted sections counterclockwise "to showcase distinct texture," Capri says.
  5. Spread out the braid and pull out some loose pieces to frame your face and achieve an effortless look now.
  6. Finish with a blast of KMS California HAIRSTAY Medium Hold Hairspray to make sure your 'do stays put all night long.

Nicky Hilton pens a fashion book, gives away her wardrobe

Nicky Hilton: 365 Style

Nicky recalls how her mom Kathy used to dress her and sister Paris as twins, even when they were teenagers walking red carpets. She didn't find her own fashion footing until "towards the end of high school," she admits. "I've been lucky to grow up around some of the biggest fashion designers in the world, modeling, designing and seeing it from every angle. I've learned a lot," she told us of what inspired her to pen her own book.

Paris and Nicky Hilton

Photo credit: Evan Agostini/Hulton Archive/Getty Images

Her book includes an entire chapter on how to find your own personal style, as well as a quiz to help you figure out your own unique fashion fingerprint. But don't be afraid to try a new look that's outside your comfort zone. "At the New York Ballet, I totally stepped out of my element and wore this Valentino Couture blue gown and had my hair up with big emeralds," Nicky recalls. "It was a real departure from how I usually dress and sort of that Cinderella moment."

Once you've decided on your own style MO, it's time to clean out your closet. Nicky's four questions to ask yourself when debating whether to ditch or keep an item are as follows:

  1. 1. Is it your size?
  2. Is it flattering?
  3. Is it me
  4. Is it ruined?

Once you've decluttered your closet and tossed old clothes, then it's time for the fun part: shopping. Using her 365 approach, you can maximize your wardrobe without blowing your budget each season. "The 3-6-5 was invented to help simplify a woman's wardrobe," Nicky explains. "The 3 stands for the most common occasions you dress for; 6 represents the six clothing staples and 5 stands for the number of accessories you need."

Photo credit: Stefanie Deutsch/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

In fact, Nicky is cleaning out her own personal closet to celebrate before her book goes on sale Sept. 2. When you pre-order it from Amazon, Target or Barnes and Noble and send in your receipt, you can win pieces straight from her wardrobe. She shows off the goods for grabs on her Instagram and is announcing two lucky winners each Friday. Two recent giveaways included a Celine bag and Christian Louboutin shoes. Sign us up!
