Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Eva Longoria and Kristen Stewart

Eva Longoria and Kristen Stewart's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria always manages to look like a total bombshell, and this week at the Glamour's Women of the Year Awards in London, the actress certainly didn't disappoint. We're obsessing over Eva's tangerine Victoria Beckham dress, aren't you? The color of the year doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon with summer approaching, and we're glad about that.

The dress' silhouette shows off Eva's toned physique and offers a pleasant little surprise detail -- front pockets! -- that we love. We love that she kept her accessories a bit neutral and let that gorgeous color speak for itself.

The final verdict? Work it girl! Eva, you know what works for your shape and your curves, and you work it well. Keep it up!

Kristin Stewart

Kristen Stewart

Let's preface this by saying that K. Stew isn't usually at the top of our best dressed list. In fact, she made our worst dressed list two weeks ago! But this week, we did a double take when we saw this photo of her at the Cannes premiere of Cosmopolis. We literally weren't even sure if it was her, at first, to be honest.

Sure, there's a little too much boobage going on in this pose, but overall, we're in love with Kristen's red Reem Acra gown! The color looks great on her skin tone, the lace cutouts are so on trend, and the dress hugs Kristen's shape perfectly.

The final verdict? For Kristen, this is a personal best. The silhouette is striking, her confidence is at an all-time high, and she's rocking the look. It's a hit in our book.

6 Summer hairstyles that will make your life easier

$

Summer beauty is easy. With all of that sunlight, you can choose to show a little of your newly-bronzed skin while lightening up on makeup. But as those temperatures rise, long, heavy hairstyles become a burden. You just want to get your hair off your neck! Get a few summer hairstyle ideas from the stars with these six styles.

Perrie Edwards’
ethereal updo

Perrie Edwards

Nothing says summer like gorgeous bohemian braids and here, Perrie Edwards of British girl group, Little Mix, does it right. This hairstyle is great for naturally wavy hair. Edwards starts by twisting a small section of her hair on the upper left portion of her head into a small braid. Then, being very careful, she starts to tease out each section with her fingers, making the braid appear larger. Once she’s done, she pins the braid back with bobby pins the same color as her golden hair. She looks chic, cute and ready for brunch or the beach.

Keisha Buchanan’s super-high bun

Keisha Buchanan

The bun will never go out of style. But because it can go grandma or high fashion, it’s all about how you rock it. Here, Keisha Buchanan does it right. Paired with her blunt, straight across bangs, she sweeps her long black hair into this tight bun at the top of her head. It’s a comfortable, yet perky, look that can be worn from day to night.

Katie Holmes'
messy bun

Katie Holmes

Sure, a messy bun could look like you’re ready to take a trip to the gym, but paired with the right outfit, this sporty look can be taken from the beach to the club. Start with uncombed hair, push it back and secure with bobby pins. Make sure to tease some pieces out for that unkempt bed-head look.

Josephine De La Baume’s sleek pony

Josephine De La Baume

Ponytails can go more than one way. They can make you look like you’re a little girl, ready for the gym or preparing for a night out on the town. Josephine De La Baume does it right with this ultra-chic ponytail, complete with dangling bangs in front for a sexy, sassy look to an otherwise "been there, done that" hairstyle.

Leslie Mann’s
effortless pony

There’s nothing sexier than showing a little shoulder and here, Leslie Mann does it without looking too sultry or vulgar. The comedic actress shows off her face and shoulders with this simple, slightly messy ponytail that can be created in less than three minutes. Simply gather your hair, prop it to the top of your head and secure with your favorite holder. Then, once it’s secure, push out a few hairs on top for an imperfect look.

You'll love these Bandolino Moderngirl wedge sandals. Cheap and chic, these modern shoes are big on style, but without the big price tag.

Betsey Johnson Maxiee

Let's go retro

Tropical-inspired nail designs

Sometimes you just want to get away. If you’re lucky enough to go on a tropical vacation this summer, these tropical-inspired nail designs will look great amongst all that white sand and crystal clear water. Even if you can’t take the time away from home, these nail designs can help you get away -- if only in your mind.

Watermelon nails

Watermelon nails.

Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer day than biting into a cold slice of watermelon. Now, get that image out of your head and onto your nails. These fun, fruity nails are achieved by starting with a base of bright pink polish like OPI’s Too Hot Pink . After the pink coat dries, brush some clear top coat over it. Once both layers are dry, take a black nail pen -- like Sally Hansen’s Color Quick -- and make small dots to look like seeds. Once the dots dry, brush a straight line of green at the tips, like L.A. Colors Art Deco Nail Art in Bright Green .

Tropical stripes

Tropical stripes

These brightly-colored stripes look like the shirts, swimsuits and umbrellas you’ll see on the beach. First, start with a pink bottom coat, like China Glaze in Pink Voltage , and let dry. On your index and ring fingers, brush a bright yellow polish at the base of the nail, using a color like Kleancolor’s Funky Yellow . Then, using Sally Hansen’s Chrome Nail Makeup in White Pearl , brush on the final stripe. Cover with a top coat and let dry.

Tribal nails

Tribal nails

This swimsuit-inspired look takes its attitude from tribal tropical attire. First, coat your nail with a bright red polish like OPI’s Apple Red and let dry. Brush on some white polish on the sides of each nail, covering the red color as pictured. A nice, brilliant white like Suncoat’s Pearl White will look stunning. Then, using the black Sally Hansen nail pen mentioned above, draw on the striking stripes. Let dry and finish with a clear coat.

Tiger stripes

Tiger stripes

Go wild this season! Start with a base coat of gold nail polish. Essie polish in Shifting Power should do the trick. Then, with the Sally Hansen Color Quick nail pen mentioned above, draw on stripes. Set with a nice, healthy coat of top coat.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Diane Kruger and Katherine Jenkins

$
0
0
Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Diane Kruger and Katherine Jenkins' fashions fell short in our new weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger

Cannes you handle it? We certainly can't! Diane Kruger stepped out in this Dior disaster for the final night of the Cannes film festival and she definitely didn't save the best for last. What the fug?!

Diane looked perfectly stylish all week in the south of France. We loved the coral dress she wore to the Calvin Klein Euphoria party and the maroon cutout mini dress she selected, too. But then she went and chose this Christian Dior Haute Couture gown from their spring 2012 collection for her final walk down the red carpet. Color us confused!

The checkered print reminds us of a tablecloth and it looks like she could be hiding a table under that dress, too . We know peplum is a major trend, but this takes it to a whole other level. If you can't sit down in your gown, you shouldn't be wearing it.

The final verdict?

Diane was a juror at Cannes, and the SheKnows jury has reached a unanimous verdict in the case of Diane's Dior dress: guilty of a red carpet fashion crime!

Katherine Jenkins

Katherine Jenkins

Singer Katherine Jenkins showed she had some serious skills on the dance floor when she competed on Dancing with the Stars, but we're dubbing this look a fashion misstep. Katherine stepped out for Glamour's Women of the Year Awards in London wearing a Mary Katrantzou cocktail dress and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Her body looks fabulous from all the booty-shaking she did last season on DWTS and the frock fits her nicely, but the print is just so busy! There are a ton of bright colors and patterns going on. It almost reminds us of those Magic Eye optical illusions. If we stare long enough, is it supposed to look better?

Then again, considering it's by the same designer that Elizabeth Banks wore to the Met Gala, we guess this could be called simple for her style. Clearly, over the top is this designer's MO!

The final verdict?

It's a figure-flattering dress and definitely not the worst fashion we've seen, but we know Katherine can do better. Props to her for keeping her shoes simple since the dress was so loud on its own. Kim Kardashian, take note!

I’m preparing with doubled up gym visits, hitting the hot yoga mat, and I have my new bikini and Tory Burch sandals ready to go... but what about sun protection? Get sun savvy

The end of the school year is in sight, and summer is just around the corner. My girlfriends and I can't wait to hit the beach! I’m preparing with doubled up gym visits, hitting the hot yoga mat, and I have my new bikini and Tory Burch sandals ready to go... but what about sun protection? Are you ready to prevent skin damage and future skin disease or cancer, while having fun in the sun? Well, I've done all the research for you, and put together the DOs and DON'Ts of smart sun protection.

DO know that SPF is not an accurate predictor of protection!

The SPF number on your sunscreen only rates protection from UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn , not UVA rays, the ones that cause wrinkling, sagging, leathering, pigmentation, aging skin and long-term damage . Crazy right? Many believe high SPFs can be even more dangerous, because it allows you to believe you can stay in direct sun longer simply because you are not getting a sunburn, while overexposing yourself to UVA rays. You need to protect against BOTH rays.

BeakerDON'T use products with chemical "active ingredient" oxybenzone and avobenzene

These chemicals do not provide UVA ptotection; they penetrate the skin and rapidly oxidize to become potent free radicals linked with cell damage, and they are also known to be endocrine disruptors.

10 Toxins found in common cosmetics >>

DO use a zinc oxide "mineral sunscreen" instead

The "active ingredient" zinc oxide provides broad spectrum protection without those nasty endocrine disruptors or other harmful chemicals. The use of sunscreen is known to prevent the direct DNA damage that causes sunburn and the two most common forms of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. However, if sunscreen penetrates into the skin, like oxybenzone, it promotes indirect DNA damage, which causes the most lethal form of skin cancer: malignant melanoma. You read that correctly, your sunscreen could be causing cancer! So, use a mineral sunscreen to keep the sun protection on the surface of the skin. Think zinc!

DO be sure to avoid nanoparticle zinc oxide

Be sure that your zinc oxide is not formulated with nanosize particles. Be careful, though, because most are. Research shows that nanoparticles cross the cell barrier and enter organs, including the brain in humans. I, for one, am not willing to be a guinea pig. The problem is that safe sunscreens containing larger, non-nanoparticle minerals that reflect light also have a tendency to appear white on the skin, so they are not as popular with consumers who don’t yet understand the benefit of zinc and harm of other types of sun protection. Well, now that you do understand this, I hope you will "get over it" and be willing take a few extra seconds to apply zinc sunscreen.

DON’T use sunscreen with ingredient retinyl palmitate

The FDA released a report last spring that retinyl palmitate enhances skin cancer lesions in the presence of sunlight in animal research. Again with the guinea pig thing -- I'm definitely avoiding it!

Many sunscreens unsafe for kids >>

DON’T use sunscreen with endocrine disrupting parabens

Just last month, the physician research team at Mt. Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center released a list of the 10 chemicals that could potentially cause autism, ADHD and neurological disorders -- and guess what -- endocrine disruptors came in at number six on the list! Future moms -- avoid it at all costs.

perfumeDON’T use the ingredient "fragrance"

Manufacturers can legally hide phthalates and hundreds of other ingredients in this one "trade secret" ingredient. Guess what -- yup -- phthalates are endocrine disruptors, too. Stay away!

Interview with eco-beauty expert Ava Anderson >>

DO read labels and look up your sunscreen on the Skin Deep cosmetic database

The database ranks products on a 0-10 toxicity scale. Check it out. The sunscreen I used to use is an 8. What’s yours? I like to remind everyone that it is all about the ingredients -- the rest is just marketing! Most big-box brand name sunscreens have multiple "hits" of endocrine disruptors in every application. Now think of how many times you reapply to yourself and your children daily. There are actually some sunscreens with all four of these endocrine disrupting offenders -- parabens, retinyl palmitate, fragrance and octinoxate. Yikes!

DO reapply often and cover up

You should apply sunscreen to dry skin 30 minutes before going outdoors. Apply sunscreen liberally. Be careful to cover exposed areas. Sunscreen should be applied in the morning and reapplied every two hours, or sooner after swimming, showering or sweating. Reapply often for maximum protection, especially if you have towel-dried. Avoid exposure from the strongest sun when possible. Get covered, go wild and get a great hat!

DO give my AVA Sunscreen a try

We are really proud of this product -- it is a great moisturizer that also happens to be a sunscreen, all organic and no harmful chemicals. Yes, you need to rub it in a bit, but based on all of this information, isn’t it worth it?

AVA Sunscreen ingredients: active ingredients: zinc oxide . inactive: beeswax , theobroma cacao seed butter , butyrospermum parkii , olea europaea , simmondsia chinensis .

Steal the style: Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White And The Huntsman -- Charlize Theron

Dark and dramatic for the summer? Oh, yes

After what seems like a million years of waiting, the Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron blockbuster, Snow White and the Huntsman, gallops into theaters with plenty of drama and man meat .

Of course, we're more interested in capturing the looks from the film.

You won't find any pink and ribbons here.

"A lot of the old fairy tales are actually pretty dark," Snow White and the Huntsman costume designer Colleen Atwood told SheKnows. "This kind of harkens back to the old, mysterious, spooky fairy tale,” she says, "So, I really liked that aspect of it."

Of course, you'd look really out of place wearing armor and chain mail outfits in today's world .

Snow White-inspired fashion

Snow White-inspired fashion

"Kristen's Snow White is a totally different kind of character. She's much less princess-y and more of a bad-ass girl," Atwood added to Seventeen.com. "Her costume is leather with clamps and different stitching on it, so it’s quite different."

As for Stewart's actual costumes in the movie? “She has a couple of girly dresses, plus her wedding dress that’s made with leather," Atwood told the magazine. "There's a really beautiful skirt that goes with it and a skeletal collar that's detachable.”

To simulate Stewart's battle look, go for form-fitting black leggings with a dark top and leather jacket with silver buckles to simulate her armor — oh, and don't forget the boots, like these from UGG for $220 at Lord & Taylor.

Stewart's Snow White dresses are softer, so look for dresses constructed of flowy fabrics, like this empire waist dress from Liz Fields . Or, if you're willing to splurge, we also love this Marchesa Notte Empire Gown pictured above.

Evil Queen-inspired fashion

Evil Queen-inspired fashion

Copying Theron's Evil Queen fashion is a lot more fun The vanity-obsessed Queen wears plenty of attention-getting dresses, robes and jewelry in shades of black, gold and silver. Basically, if she were alive today, she'd live in Alexander McQueen.

To copy her look, go for pieces with plenty of gothic embellishment and Victorian inspiration, like this black and white long-sleeved top with a high collar , this Ramaje dress from San Patrick and this Alexander McQueen Printed Sheath Intarsia Dress pictured above. Jewelry should be severe with lots of sharp edges and angles, like this Brushed Gold Tone Dagger Necklace from Givenchy for $112.

You can also check out Atwood's official collection inspired by her work on Snow White and the Huntsman at HSN.

Makeup and nails

Makeup and nails

The makeup in Snow White and the Huntsman is focused on very pale skin with golden eyelids, rosy cheeks and dramatically red lips and pale skin with dramatic eyes .

Confused which products to use? Don't be — both Benefit and ybf have released makeup collections inspired by the film. The ybf collection has your basic lipstains, liners and mascara, but they come in gothic-inspired packaging that we love. Some of our favorites from the collection include:

Benefit's Snow White and the Huntsman — Rare Beauty Kit features a limited edition bag and products for $45. Inside is a full size version of BADgal Lash Mascara, a full size bottle of The POREfessional, a sample size of their signature Benetint and a sample size of High Beam.

Deborah Lippmann also got in on the action with two custom nail lacquers inspired by the movie — Prelude to a Kiss and Dark Side of the Moon for $30.

As for recreating the looks, we've found two incredible tutorials that show how to create the Evil Queen's look :

6 Best dressed celebs at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards is in the books and the show was filled with plenty of predictable winners and lame jokes . The stars still turned out in their best looks, though! Check out our six faves -- do you agree?
Charlize Theron

As far as we're concerned, Charlize Theron can do no wrong in the fashion department. The Snow White and the Huntsman evil queen looked dazzling in her red Lanvin mini and Jimmy Choo heels.

Kristen Stewart

Her co-star, Kristen Stewart, also wowed us in her colorful Guishem mini dress. Word has it she also broke out the Chuck Taylors on the red carpet .

Mila Kunis

Actress Mila Kunis smoldered in her sequined Fendi mini -- it fits her fiery personality perfectly.

Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks has really stepped her sartorial game up lately -- maybe playing Effie in The Hunger Games had an effect on her in more ways than one? The Elie Saab pantsuit is edgy -- without being too revealing -- and hugs her curves in all the right places.

Jenna Dewan

We love to hate Jenna Dewan -- she's married to super hottie Channing Tatum, after all. She seems so sweet though -- and this Lublow colorblock dress with a super plunging neckline is gorgeous. Look at that decolletage!

Nikki Reed

Twilight actress Nikki Reed looked incredible in her Randi Rahm gold dress with a keyhole neckline. Our one question: Why did she look so miserable? Is married life with Paul McDonald not going so well?

For every best dressed star at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, there were at least one or two who got dressed in the dark. Check out our picks for worst dressed -- do you agree?
Brooke Hogan

Former reality star -- and likely future wrestling star -- Brooke Hogan always looks like she stepped out of a South Florida strip club when she hits the red carpet. All she needs are some Lucite heels to complete this disastrous look.

Leighton Meester

We usually love Leighton Meester's red carpet choices, but this set looks more appropriate for a casual weekend than an awards show. Also, Meester is not fat, but the design on the shirt made us think she's pregnant -- probably not the look she was going for.

Christina Ricci

Christina Ricci's black Christian Siriano dress is good in theory, but the actress' odd body proportions make it look like it's about to fall off. Also, what's with showing off her boob tat? Not cute.

Fivel Stewart

Actress Fivel Stewart obviously didn't have stylists put together her look -- they never would have let her leave the dressing room in this uninspired white dress with black pumps, 3,000 bracelets and a random bag. Let's try a little harder next time, OK?

jessica biel

Jessica Biel has a sick body, but we're not feeling it in this mod Chanel number with colorblocked heels. We can't put our finger on it -- it just seems a bit... off. Doubt she cares what we think, though: She's marrying Justin Timberlake!

Shailene Woodley

The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley is way too young for this serious pantsuit by Stella McCartney. We would have rather she wore something a little lighter for summer. Ah well, she'll learn.

June is National Candy Month, but I prefer to wear my candy rather than eat it. So, I decided to put together some candy-colored looks from head to toe for you. Here are three casual outfits that are perfect for a relaxing vacation by the beach!

Out at breakfast

Out at breakfast

When I'm on vacation, I love to find great breakfast spots within walking distance from my hotel. Slip on this jelly bean-colored T-by Alexander Wang skirt with this easy Wildfox tee . I'm obsessed with the monochromatic look right now, if you can't tell. Make sure to pack some mints in this J. Crew clutch and finish the look off with these ALDO summer staple wedges .

Shopping on the boardwalk

Shopping on the boardwalk

I love summer scarves because there are so many fun and interesting ways to wear them! This multi-stripe scarf by Xhilaration is one of my faves. Keep it casual with a flowy tee from ASOS  and some gray suede UGG flip flops . Then add a pop of color to your denim with these Hudson jean shorts . This look reminds me of a swirly lollipop!

At the beach

At the beach

It's officially swimsuit season! Bandeau bikinis flatter any body type, making them my number one choice when showing off your sweet bod. I adore this Candy Stripe Bandeau from River Island . It looks like colorful rock candy! Add these edgy Linda Farrow aviator sunglasses and Steve Madden flats , and then have a delicious day at the beach!

Review: Nourish Organic Bodycare debuts at Whole Foods

There are many natural and organic brands that promise that elixir of youth, but several fall short. And an organic deodorant -- how can that possibly work? Find out if Nourish Organic Food for Healthy Skin lives up to the hype.

Review: Nourish Organic Bodycare debuts at Whole Foods

Nourish just launched as the world’s first United States Department of Agriculture 100 percent certified organic bath and body collection, and will be available at Whole Foods and online.

Let's face it -- an organic bodycare line receiving the United States Department of Agriculture National Organic Certification is a big deal. With that certification, the consumer has some peace of mind that the ingredients are quality -- but this doesn't automatically mean the line works. After all, there are no guarantees in life, love and beauty.

The collection's spokesperson, Christine Taylor , is a vegetarian and recent vegan convert, and she fell in love with the product line and its performance. "I didn't start the hunt to become a brand ambassador," says Taylor. "It came to me, and my honest thought when I saw everything under $10 in the line was that 'it has to stink... nothing is that cheap and great.'"

But Taylor was blown away by the texture, mild and appealing fragrances and nourishing properties of all the products in the line, which is why she did not hesitate to associate her name with the brand.

The Nourish lineup

The products include:

  • Nourish Organic Hand Wash : These come in Fresh Fig, Almond Vanilla, Lavender Mint and Wild Berries fragrance varieties, and give you a soft, creamy wash and lather. Bottom line? They smell delicious and don't over dry your hand. I'd definitely buy this.
  • Nourish Organic Deodorant : An organic deodorant? How can it possibly work? Well, I was a skeptic too -- like everyone else -- but I do find Nourish's beautifully packaged deodorant impressive when it comes to the B.O. fighting department. The formula contains naturally deodorizing cornstarch and vegetable protein, shea and cocoa butters, beeswax and coconut oil. Once I applied it in the morning, I did not have to worry for the entire day. It has your back!
  • Nourish Organic Body Wash : This is an uber gentle body wash, and good enough for sensitive skin. The formulation includes aloe, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, sesame seed oil, shea butter, coconut milk, vitamin E, jasmine and marshmallow root extract to provide a truly soft and effective lather. The result? A clean wash without the need for too much post-shower lotion.
  • Nourish Organic Body Lotion : This is a gentle body lotion and quite hydrating . Apart from the essential oils and acai, rice bran and sweet almond oils that have beautiful hydrating properties, there are a few vitamins in the formula which offer antioxidant protection.
  • Nourish Organic Body Butter : Packed tightly in cute jars, this body butter is quite firm . I honestly prefer the lotion in this line over the butters, but the formulation of pure essential oils ensures a little goes a long way. It's best for very dry skin, since it does feel a tad rich on the skin after use.

The verdict

The world's first USDA organic bath and bodycare collection is packaged beautifully and is true eye candy. I would say that most of the products live up to the hype . For $8-10, this is a terrific value and a line I wouldn't want to pass up while shopping at Whole Foods.

Head-to-toe tips to get your skin summer-ready

Are you ready to show some skin? Summer is all about wearing less and baring more than you usually do, which means making sure you’re smooth from top to toe. If you haven’t started your poolside prep just yet, don’t fret. We’re here to help you get summer-ready in no time!
Woman with summer skin in pool

Are you ready to show some skin? Summer is all about wearing less and baring more than you usually do, which means making sure you’re smooth from top to toe.

Summer skin countdown

If you haven’t started your poolside prep just yet, don’t fret. We’re here to help you get summer-ready in no time!

nail polishSchedule a pedicure

What better way to show off your new wedge sandals than by getting a pedicure first? After a long winter shoved into boots and stuck in socks, now is the perfect time to pamper your feet. A pedicure will ensure your tootsies are well taken care of – rough patches will be removed leaving feet smooth and ready for sandals, and of course toes get painted a summer-ready hue.

Exfoliate all over

There’s no better way to get your body ready for summer than to start scrubbing. Dry skin can accumulate leaving skin looking flaky and lackluster. Grab an exfoliating brush and your favorite cleanser or a body scrub and give your skin a fresh, smooth start. We suggest making it a weekly habit to exfoliate in the shower. You’ll feel better plus your skin will look smooth and radiant.

Banish body breakouts

If the skin on your back or chest is prone to breakouts, there are a few things you can do to help keep things clear. First things first – invest in a body wash made for busting blemishes. Look for a product that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which will unclog pores and kill acne-causing bacteria. You can also reach for a topical treatment to further minimize breakouts.

Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash Body wash: Try Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash , which helps keep back, shoulders and chest blemish-free.

Murad Clarifying Body Spray

Treatment: Try Murad Clarifying Body Spray , which works to heal existing blemishes and kill surface bacteria.

Moisturize

Once skin is smooth, it’s important to keep it that way. Well-hydrated skin is luminous and healthy-looking – and ready to be shown off in short shorts and summer skirts. It’s also important to remember that exposure to sun, chlorine and salt water can all dry skin out, so add daily moisturizing to both your pre and during summer routine.

Get a facial

Help skin transition to a new season by getting a facial. It might seem like an unnecessary indulgence, but letting a skin care professional assess your face means knowing exactly what it needs to look its best. You’ll get advice targeted to your skin’s issues , not to mention leave with a glowing complexion.

Practice sun smarts

Wearing sunscreen all day, every day is a must but it’s important to be even more careful about sun exposure in the summer. Too much sun can mean a nasty burn, but can also lead to premature aging, fine lines, discoloration in the skin and ultimately, skin cancer. Find a product you like in a texture that doesn’t feel greasy and apply often. You need about one ounce to cover your whole body.

Pretty Little Things: Summer beauty essentials

Summer means moving away from heavy makeup and instead opting for products that offer a more fresh-faced look. This week on Pretty Little things , we’re sharing some complexion perfecting products for gorgeous summer skin.

BB cream

BB cream

Steadily gaining popularity for a couple of years, BB cream is a great option for summer because it combines several products you’re probably already using. BB creams are basically a primer, moisturizer, SPF and tint all in one . We just like it because when it’s hot out, less is more when it comes to what we want on our face.

Try it: Boscia B.B. Cream boasts SPF 27, hydrates and tones skin while also providing light, skin-evening coverage.

Bronzing powder

Bronzing powder

Obviously we’ll be slathering on the SPF rather than baking on the beach, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want a healthy sun-kissed glow. For that we’ll be relying on bronzing powder, which is the easiest way to get a faux glow. Apply a light dusting only where the sun would naturally hit your face.

Try it: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Cheek Glow is a unique skin-illuminating powder and gel hybrid that gives skin a natural beach-side glow.

Shimmer eye shadow

Shimmer eye shadow

Light reflecting shadows are perfect for summer because they offer lighter coverage with a hint of shimmer that works for warmer months and brightens up your eyes. Choose pink, peach and champagne-hued shadows for optimum summer-ready eyes.

Try it: We like Nars Shimmer Shadow in Baby Girl, a soft, summery pink .

Lip & cheek stain

Lip & cheek stain

We love cheek and lip stains because you don’t need to use much to add subtle color, and the product is easy to layer depending on how much coverage you want. Stains just seem to feel lighter than their powder or cream-based counterparts, which is something we look for in the summer months.

Try it: Get reintroduced to one of the classic multitasking stains, Benefit’s Benetint, a rose-tinted sheer color for lips and cheeks .

Oil blotting papers

Summer shine is something that can’t be avoided, but rather than continually pat on powder , we suggest keeping oil blotting papers in your purse. These won’t mess with your makeup or leave any further product behind.

Try it: Sephora Oil Blotting Papers quickly absorb excess oil and reduce pesky shine .

Degree-defying makeup

No matter what season, you want to look your best. This becomes challenging as temperatures rise and humidity closes in. Don’t sweat it, though, because I’ve got some degree-defying makeup tips to keep you looking cool no matter how heated the situation becomes.

Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum, $42Coverage that protects

Let’s start with skin. When the weather gets warm, we spend a lot more time outdoors and putting sunscreen on exposed areas, especially the face. This is a MUST. But, let’s say your skin is not as perfect as you’d like or you have a daytime outdoor special event. There’s no need to buy a special foundation with high SPF. Simply mix a few drops of your favorite liquid foundation into a facial-quality sunscreen. You'll have UVA/UVB protection and enough coverage to make people think your "real" skin is amazing!

My picks for perfect facial suncare to mix with your foundation are:

Benefit - Benetint, Posie Tint and ChaCha Tint, $29 eachAdd some color

Next, we add a flush of color, but let’s make sure it stays. When color has to stand up to a steamy climate, I immediately reach for lip/cheek stains. They’re easy to apply, add a very natural looking flush to the skin and are heat and moisture-proof. I like to apply stain to the apple of the cheeks and blend back towards the ears. I rub some of the same stain into moisturized lips at this time. The best part of stains is their ability to be layered to either intensify or customize colors.

Some of the best budge-proof lip/cheek stains are:

Nars - Illuminator Liquid, $30Highlight your features

Now we’re going to sculpt your face with highlighter/illuminator. I love highlighting because it takes the guesswork out of contouring your face. This is also a very important technique for HD Video production because dark contouring looks very un-natural to the Hi-Def camera. If you accentuate the high points of your face by highlighting, the rest will fall into natural contours.

For warm weather, I prefer to use an illuminator to a highlighter. They add a subtle sheen or glow -- not sparkle. I apply the illuminator to the top of the cheekbones, down the center of the nose, at the cleft of the chin and in the center of the forehead.

Perfect illuminators for warm weather are:

Too Faced - Aqua Bunny Waterproof Cream to Powder Bronzer,Never forget the bronzer

Next, we grab the bronzer to bring this all together. The foolproof way to achieve perfect bronzer placement is to stand directly in front of your mirror. Tilt your face up slightly. Now imagine the sun is in front of you at noon. The sun would be concentrated at the highest points on your face - the tops of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your chin and along your hairline. That’s where you apply either a powder or cream bronzer and make sure to blend in well.

Perfect bronzers for warm weather are:

Armour Beauty - In Marilyn or Stardust, $21 eachFinish with gloss

Lips are already stained so all that’s left is a dab of juicy-looking gloss to complete this glowing summer goddess.

I prefer to keep it simple and use clear gloss with a golden or a silver shimmer.

My favorite shimmering summer sheer glosses are:

The summer staple is back!

Hello SK Style Watchers! What is one thing you can count on to reappear in fashion every spring and summer? Well it’s white, of course! And this year white is back in a big way, from the red carpet fashions to your favorite retail store. White is elegant, timeless, and yet, so now -- which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Trendspotting with Jill Laine - White

Fill me in

Let’s first talk about three white items that every woman needs to have in her closet this summer.

Quick tips

White looks amazing with neutrals, and it makes bright colors really pop! It’s chic and gorgeous when paired with gold and other metals. One other quick tip: Make sure your whites are white! When they start to yellow, it’s time for them to go.

A crisp, button-up shirt

This is a staple that you can wear to the office or dress down on the weekend. You could literally wear it every day! I love this boyfriend shirt from Nordstrom !
Little white dress

Little white dress

Forget the LBD, for summer it’s all about the LWD! White shows off your tan; it’s crisp and clean. Try this Oasis Lantern dress from ASOS .
White pants

White pants

These are a basic for any summer wardrobe. My only caveat here is that you may have to kiss a lot of frogs, or in this case, try on a lot of pants, before you find the right pair for your body type. If the fabric is thin and the pockets show through, I recommend having the pockets removed and sewn shut. A good place to start is with these H&M pants .

There you have it, Style Watchers! Tips on why white is so perfect for you, right now!

up next week

In my vlog next week, I’ll show you which three items you can borrow from Dad’s closet and incorporate into your unique style.
